Our primary responsibility, as the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce, is to encourage and assist in the recruitment, development, and retention of business and industry throughout all municipalities in Chilton County. The Chamber also strives to promote the benefit of a properly trained and educated workforce to the individual, our members, and the greater community.

Throughout 2022, great strides have been taken to fulfill this mission. The inception of the Merchants Association of Chilton County has been a great success for our community. The Chamber, alongside the MACC, will continue to explore opportunities for networking, developing, and marketing for our local businesses. Also, with the assistance of our municipalities, we intend to provide career development opportunities to improve and aid our existing workforce.

As we look ahead, in an ever-changing environment, we intend to stick to our goals in developing a local business and economic atmosphere of which the businesses and people of Chilton County can be proud. Chilton County was established in 1868 from portions of Autauga, Bibb, Perry and Shelby counties. Originally named Baker County after founder Alfred Baker Sr., the county was renamed Chilton in honor of former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice William Parrish Chilton. Clanton was established as the county seat in 1871. Agriculture is a major industry, with peaches being the most widely known of its fruits. ABOUT CLANTON

Originally named Goose Pond, Clanton was re-named for James Holt Clanton, who served with distinction in the First Alabama Calvary during the Civil War. Clanton is the site of the iconic peach tower that can be seen from Interstate 65. It is home to a state-of-the-art hospital as a part of Ascension St. Vincent’s Health System and a satellite campus of Jefferson State Community College. Competitions and conferences from across the state come to Clanton to meet in the Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center. Grayson Russell of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Talladega Nights and Mac Powell of Third Day are from here. As of the 2021 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, the city’s population is 8,762.

ABOUT JEMISON

Jemison is the second largest municipality in Chilton County, with a 2020 U.S. Census Bureau population of 2,642. Jemison had several names before it was finally named for Robert Jemison, who owned a stage line in the area and was influential in the establishment of Birmingham. Predominately settled because of the railroad, Jemison’s downtown is now along Highway 31. In 1976, the city was the first in Chilton County to elect a minority to public office when Eddie Reed was elected Mayor.

Thorsby was founded in 1895 by Theodore Thorson and J.F. Peterson and E.M. Faegre who encouraged their Scandinavian and Norwegian friends living in more northern states to move to Alabama.

ABOUT MAPLESVILLE

Maplesville is the oldest town in Chilton County. It was named for businessman Stephen Maples in 1829. The railroad and the timber industry were major contributors in the development of the town. Timber and paper continue to be major industries there to this day. Historic memorabilia of the town is showcased in the old Maplesville Railroad Depot on the edge of town. Friday nights are special for Maplesville as the town gathers in the stands of the football stadium. The Maplesville Red Devils won three state championships in a row in 2014, 2015 and 2016. According to the 2020 census, the population is 637.

In 1947, the town was the site of the first Chilton County Peach Festival, which although it has moved to Clanton, is an enduring tradition to this day. A historic building for the town is Helen Jenkins Chapel, which was originally built by Norwegian Lutherans in 1903 and has been used as a church by multiple congregations and as a school in bygone days. The town’s heritage is commemorated each year during the Swedish Festival. According to the 2020 census, the population is 2,064. This increase in population moved Thorsby from a town to a city designation.

Chilton County leaders are looking to build on past success and strengthen partnerships in the coming years as they lead the community forward.

Here are some of the main goals they are focusing on:

Chilton County Commission

A new courthouse is an immediate focus for the Chilton County Commission.

“To me, that is the top priority here,” Hardee said.

Improvements to broadband internet in certain places in the county, continuing to work on repaving roads around Chilton County, paying debt to work on more projects for the county, and hiring a Chilton County manager are some of the other plans for the future of Chilton County in 2023.

“I was happy the county and city were able to build a relationship to get a new hotel in town this year, and also working on other projects with them,” Hardee said. “We have come a long way with the P25 (county emergency system), we have our contract signed, and we are moving forward with that as well. That is something I was very glad we got accomplished.”

Hardee said the commission will continue ongoing projects such as helping the town of Maplesville with their water and sewer system and finding a new Chilton County engineer this year.

“We are working along with Mayor (Jeff Mims) on some projects for eco-

nomic development here along with our Industrial Development Authority,” Hardee said. “We want to focus this new year on getting a plan for a county manager.”

Merchants Association of Chilton County

Business owners in Chilton County have come together to support each other for future growth through the Merchants Association of Chilton County.

“Our goal is always to grow businesses in our local area to help each other grow locally, but also to expand out on social media and in other ways of bringing customers into our area,” Maymay Helms of MACC said.

More field trips to local businesses are planned this year to help owners learn about what else is offered in the county.

A service expo where service-based businesses can tell business owners about

what they have to offer is being planned as the second annual event.

“We are also looking at doing a lot of training this year for employees, like customer service training,” Helms said. This training will be held in the first few months of 2023.

Helms also plans on continuing to help more business owners in Chilton county to “understand the purpose of the MACC.”

“The purpose is really to. help every business … be the best that they can be and get the most networking they can get,” Helms said. “It is a completely free association of business owners. I just have a dream of every business owner in town being a part of it.”

A farmers market in downtown Clanton is also in the works to help promote local farmers and their wares.

media business promotion are presented and ideas for group events are discussed. Committees then form to work on getting an event from idea to reality.

City of Clanton

Economic and community development continue to be a focus for Clanton. Mayor Jeff Mims said Clanton is gaining interest with business developers.

In 2022, the city hired Chris Dunlap as its economic developer to work with its Industrial Development Board. Dunlap and Mims are working to connect with national chain retail and restaurants to provide things currently not offered in the city. Dunlap said the goal is to be proactive in recruiting through marketing.

Focus will be put on bringing businesses to Interstate 65, Exit 205 near where the Hampton Inn will be located. A $2 fee per night for hotels was passed in the city last year to pay the economic developer’s salary and to fund future projects.

Mims said securing such developments would ensure more tax revenue for the city giving it the funds it needs for improvements, such as repaving roads. Funding from increases in the business license fee will be used to match grants for community improvements.

Improvements are already being planned for water and sewer services in the city. A grant is expected to be awarded to help fund this. Improvements to the parks, adding a dog park and a new building for the city court and police department continue to be a focus.

Retaining current businesses and assisting when possible with expansion is also a focus for the city. Mims said he would like to see more locally-owned businesses add evening hours and be open during special events that bring people to the city.

The Clanton Fire Department will have its first full-time fire station in 2022, and funding is being applied for to make the two remaining stations staffed full time.

The city has applied for a $150,000 Rural Violent Crime Reduction Initiative state grant

BUSINESS AND Growth

to establish a police officer training facility with a classroom area and firing range, and county leaders plan to apply for a grant for some equipment that can be used in the classrooms. Zero dollars in funding would be required as a match to secure the grant.

Mims said the facility would be open to law enforcement throughout the region to come and use the facility. State representation for Chilton County have also expressed support for the project.

Mims said even if the grant funding does not come through, “we are going to build one, it might not be as fancy … We’ve already got the property. We’ve already got the firing range done, we just have to build a building over it.”

The facility could also be used to hold events to teach students about firearms safety. The goal is to have construction complete by fall 2023.

City of Jemison

Improvements and pursuing opportunities for growth are on the agenda for Jemison.

City Administrator Shannon Welch said some repaving road projects will be scheduled and work will begin on the long-anticipated improvement to the look and sidewalks on Main Street. Welch said the sidewalk project has reached the bid phase, and it is expected to begin in early 2023.

Plans are also in the works for a small park with a walking trail that would be near the center of the city. Discussion about the park started about six months ago, Welch said. Fixing septic issues in the South Ridge subdivision will be a priority in 2023. Welch said funding is being applied for to provide a solution.

A long-term goal for the city is to establish a sports complex.

City of Thorsby

Thorsby Mayor Robert Hight reflected upon 2022 as he looked forward to what the Scandinavian Settlement of the South has in store for 2023.

“We have gotten a few new businesses come in this past year … we have some others in the works, and they are starting to take shape,” Hight said.

Hight said the citizens in smaller communities are the most responsible for growing those communities, and Thorsby’s residents have done just that.

“I think the citizens and the close-knit community here comes together and supports those businesses, and that is the biggest thing I see,” Hight said.

Thorsby hopes to do more with its parks in 2023 by securing some grants available to them.

Hight said the city of Thorsby will also continue to make improvements to their water and sewer systems, as well as adding more businesses.

“Hopefully, we will get a grocery store in the next year, that is one of the future plans we have for Thorsby,” Hight said.

Town of Maplesville

Improving infrastructure is the focus for Maplesville in the coming year.

“One of our main things for 2023 will be getting the sewer down to West Fraser,” Mayor W.C. Hayes said.

The lumber mill is on a septic system that is working overtime. The mill has recently announced plans for expansion. Having a sewer system would help not only West Fraser, but other industries that are on the same side of Highway 22. Work on securing easements for the project is expected to start in early 2023.

A grant has been secured to fund the project, but Hayes said the town needs $500,000 to provide the required matching funds. Some funds had been set aside for the project even before the grant was awarded, and Hayes will be talking to state officials about options.

Another goal is to pave the remainder of the dirt roads in town. Some funding from the county has also been designated toward the project.

Upgrades to the community park playground are also in the works.

While Chilton County is a tourist destination for many stopping for its famous peaches, it is also home to individuals striving to see the county flourish and grow.

The county is strategically located in the center of the state, and is considered roughly “halfway” between Birmingham and Montgomery on Interstate 65.

The area is bountiful in agriculture with peaches and strawberries being especially celebrated, but it is also home to many businesses and industries that continue to grow and attract others from around the world.

Chilton County’s existing industry, as well as the quality of life, will continue to create a strong foundation for sustained growth. The city of Clanton has seen developments that had long been in the works become a reality in 2022 with the opening of Starbucks and Ellianos. The developer for the Starbucks site also made it possible for Milo’s Hamburgers to come to town.

Even as outside companies are coming to the county, local businesses are looking to strengthen and expand. In 2022, local business owners came together to form the Merchants Association of Chilton County where business owners can meet and share ideas for promotion and expansion. The group meets on a regular basis for networking and training, and it has coordinated events and special shopping days.

Female business owners also have a local resource in the REACH Catalyst Women’s Business Center in Clanton.

The county’s central location makes it an ideal place for industries. Improvements at the Chilton County Airport will help those from far away scout out potential places to locate their industries. In the next couple of years, the airport plans to expand its runway by 1,000 feet to accommodate

more commercial traffic. This will give the airport 5,000 feet of runway.

“If we are not accessible and they cannot land here, we are going to be taken off the list for future development in a heartbeat,” Airport Authority board member Billy Singleton said.

“If we get to 5,000 feet, we can draw a 500-mile circle around us, which is an average business flight by jet in one hour. That opens up an entirely different potential customer base. If (a business) comes and looks at us, that’s the first step. Once they can get here, they will check into what else we have to offer.”

The airport has 30 aircraft based at the airport, and it has become an important stop for those patrolling for forest fires and for emergency medical flights.

In terms of industry, the county’s largest employer currently is Adient, which continues to make strides in the automotive industry with one out of every three seats in the world of automobiles coming from an Adient facility.

Additional industries throughout the county that continue to create a strong

foundation of employment and growth for the county include O-Flex Metal Finishing, South Coast Paper, Stella Jones and West Fraser Lumber. The West Fraser Lumber Mill in Maplesville announced upgrades and expansion plans totaling $76.9 million in 2022. O-flex Metal Finishing held its first job fair in 2020 as the company switched to hiring employees directly, rather than through a recruiting agency.

In 2020, the Alabama Career Center System secured a location in Chilton County to help employees and employers. Services include on-the-job training and resume preparation for jobseekers and recruitment assistance and pre-employment screening for employers.

Many of the county’s assets include St. Vincent’s Clanton location, Jefferson State Community College, a strong public education system, a cohesive government structure and a strong infrastructure system.

Establishing a dedicated workforce development center is also in the works.

The Ellianos in Clanton is part of a regional franchise.

Agriculture is a foundational industry for Chilton County.

Most widely known for its peaches, the county is also home to cotton producers, vegetable farmers, strawberry patches, cornfields and animal farms.

Each local high school has agriculture classes and FFA chapters that compete in animal judging on a yearly basis with Thorsby FFA advancing to the national level of competition on a regular basis.

The annual Peach Festival in Clanton celebrates the fruit that the county is most known for. In recent years, a Strawberry Festival has also been established in Thorsby.

The timber industry was crucial to the formation of Maplesville and remains important in the area and

throughout the county. Today, treerelated products account for major employers in the Maplesville area, including Parnell Inc., West Fraser, Taylor Made and South Coast Paper. Parnell Inc. supplies wood for International Paper, Georgia Pacific, Boise Cascade in Thorsby and lumber company Kykenkee in Vance. West Frasier turns the cut trees into boards used in house framing and will be expanding operations in 2023.

Many of the lumber-related companies in the county have been in business for decades with employees that have been with them for several years.

The Chilton Regional Research and Extension Center has been the site of important research for peaches, strawberries and kiwi. The Center is

home to the Chilton County Master Gardeners Demonstration garden, which is open to the public during regular business hours.

Chilton County Master Gardeners attend a weekly class for several months to learn best practices for a variety of plants. Once they have completed training, Master Gardeners complete service hours sharing their knowledge with the community and keeping the Extension Office garden looking great.

The Chilton County Extension Office also hosts several agriculturerelated programs for both adults and children throughout the year. These include 4-H programs with Chick Chain, a project where students raise chick and document their growth being a highlight each year.

LEARNING ANDKnowledge

Chilton County Schools works to provide opportunities for students to excel in a number of areas. Clanton and Jemison schools provide engineering classes for kindergarten to 12th through Project Lead the Way classes.

Jemison Intermediate has focused on developing unique learning opportunities for students in recent years through its outdoor classroom project. A pavilion, nature trail, sensory area and a weather station have been established. There are plans for standing work tables, convertible bench table, large chess pieces for the outdoor chess board and an amphitheater experiment station.

With 7,813 students, Chilton County Schools offer preschool

through 12th grade throughout the county. K-12 schools serve Maplesville, Thorsby, Isabella and Verbena.

Classroom expansions are underway at Chilton County High School and Isabella High School to accommodate the growing number of students at these schools. The CCHS addition will include seven classrooms and a science lab. The IHS addition will be six classrooms.

Jemison High School also has construction in its future for a new band room.

Sports is a highlight for Thorsby and Maplesville high schools with both having very successful teams during recent football seasons.

High School students have the

option to attend classes on different campuses to take courses in specialty areas, such as culinary or STEM (science, technology, engineering and math.)

Chilton County High School also offers Advanced Placement courses.

Preschool classes have been added at every school through the state First Class Preschool program.

High school students have the opportunity to take a number of dual enrollment opportunities through the Chilton-Clanton campus of Jefferson State Community College. Classes range from English to EMT Basic training. Many juniors and seniors in high school choose to pursue handson training and certifications in

The Chilton County School System has 7,813 students in preschool to 12th grade.

LEARNING ANDKnowledge

their field through programs at LeCroy Career Technical Center.

The center offers everything from welding and automotive work to cosmetology and nursing.

Through the nursing program, students complete the requirements to test for certified nursing assistant and patient care technician certifications. Students learn about the fundamentals of health science, including the systems of the body, infection control, medical terminology and an overview of jobs in the field. As a part of the patient care technician training, students learn how to use the equipment used for EKGs and drawing blood.

Completing the patient care technician certification allows students to work in a nursing home or assist a nurse. Usually the program includes clinicals at a hospital.

In the Electrical and Industrial Maintenance program at LCTC, students learn to use the basic tools needed to construct, troubleshoot and maintain standard electrical circuits and systems in homes and industry settings. Field trips are usually a part of the course, so students can see what they are learning put into practice on a job site.

New programs were added at LeCroy Career Technical Center in 2022, including a lineman training program and a course designed for students who want to become teachers.

As a part of the simulated workforce model, students apply to the program as sophomores.

The Child Nutrition Program for Chilton County Schools has expanded to provide not only breakfast and lunch, but after-school meals and a summer meal program. The school system receives reimbursement for each meal from the USDA.

WORKFORCE Development

JEFFERSON STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE CHILTON-CLANTON CAMPUS

The Chilton-Clanton Campus of Jefferson State Community College was established in 2008 through a partnership between the college and the City of Clanton.

The city wanted a conference center, and the college wanted to establish a campus in Clanton.

This partnership has strengthened as the college and regional business leaders work together to establish career training opportunities.

The one-building campus is 30,000 square feet and offers courses in required core subjects as well as fine arts and nursing. Several dual-enrollment classes are also offered to local high school students.

Each year English and his-

tory students work in groups to create a museum-style display of their work available for viewing by students, faculty and the public.

The Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center is part of the JSCC campus and features a performance hall, which seats 608 people, a 13,000-square-feet exhibit hall with a catering kitchen and three classroom-style rooms ideal for trainings and conference breakout sessions.

A wide range of events have come to the venue, including business conferences, local graduations, dance competitions, dance recitals, proms and wedding receptions. Its proximity to Interstate 65 also makes it a convenient location to hold an event.

Offerings to prepare and strengthen Chilton County’s workforce are increasingly focused on meeting industry needs.

The Clanton campus of Jefferson State Community College has expanded workforce development program to include Commercial Driver’s License class in recent years.

The CDL class and practice area were unveiled in 2022 with more than 200 interest forms being filled out for the course.

“We have been very grateful for our business and industry support statewide for these efforts,” Leah Bigbee, Jeff State’s Center for Workforce Education director, said. Scholarships made possible through an Appalachian Regional Commission grant allowed the inaugural class of students to have free tuition for the course.

Jeff State is also applying to become a third-party testing site for the CDL.

In 2023, Chilton County residents have an additional option for completing CDL training through The Good Shepherd Truck Driving Facility. The first class was held in January. The class includes classroom work and “behind-the-wheel” training provided by someone who already has a CDL. The facility is certified through the Federal Mo-

tor Carrier Safety Administration.

Jeff State also offers a heavy equipment operator program to decrease the amount of on-the-job training needed for new heavy equipment operator hires. Bigbee said industry leaders had said there was a need for this type of training.

“It will give students simulated seat time before they do the real thing,” Bigbee said.

She said the simulator will also be useful to show students the opportunities that are available.

New workforce development opportunities are also available through Jefferson State Community College’s Ready To Work program and the JumpStartAL initiative.

The JumpStartAL initiative is a partnership between public and private entities that is incorporating virtual reality equipment into workforce development training.

Students taking Ready To Work classes at other campuses, including the ChiltonClanton campus, have the option to come to the Jefferson campus just for the JumpStart AL supported class. The college hopes to expand JumpStartAL opportunities to more campuses in the future.

The city of Clanton is also discussing workforce development opportunities

through its Industrial Development committee. The city hosts an employment fair each year for students and adults from all areas of the county to meet with businesses and industries. Some hold on the spot interviews during the event. Clanton Mayor Jeff Mims said he knows some students were hired at the last event.

LeCroy Career Technical Center, a part of Chilton County Schools, offers a number of vocational programs to prepare students for their career of choice after high school. Partnerships with local law enforcement and fire departments offer academies in fire and law enforcement. Students in each program receive hands-on training in real world settings, whether doing body repair work on a car in the garage or doing hair and nails in the onsite salon.

LCTC follows the simulated workforce model. Students apply to the program and go through an interview process. Selected students are then notified before the start of their junior year in high school. A student leader is also selected for each class to serve in a manager role.

Safety guidelines are also taught and followed just as they would be on the job.

The programs are designed to prepare students for certification in their field.

The Chilton-Clanton Campus of Jefferson State Community College was established in 2008 through a partnership between the college and the City of Clanton.

HEALTH &Wellness

Chilton County’s medical offices and state-of-the-art hospital mean residents can have many of their medical needs taken care of without leaving the county.

Some medical offices have expanded in Clanton recently to be able to serve more patients.

Heart South has recently located to a larger office, moving out of space at the hospital to its own building on Medical Center Drive.

The office provides cardiology stress tests, bloodwork, echocardiograms, vascular ultrasound and treatment of coronary disease, hypertension and congestive heart failure.

Fresenius Kidney Care in Clanton is a local resource that allows kidney patients to receive the care they need without traveling long distances. An ex-

pansion in 2020 provided for additional space to serve up to 20 dialysis patients.

A medical office building attached to St. Vincent’s Chilton is expected to break ground in 2023. Chilton County Health Care Authority member Sibley Reynolds said the building would take 18 months to complete. The building will provide additional space for medical specialists to have an office in Chilton County, eliminating the need to drive to other places for medical care.

Several specialists already rent office space at St. Vincent’s Chilton’s outpatient area, including those in gastroenterology, general surgery, nephrology, obstetrics/gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, podiatry, pulmonology and medical oncology/hematology.

The hospital also features a 24/7

Emergency Department, advanced imaging and diagnostic services, stress testing, sleep lab, wound care center, pulmonary function testing, inpatient and intensive care services and laboratory services.

Technological advances through telemedicine have helped St. Vincent’s Chilton provide a higher level of care for local stroke victims.

Clanton, Jemison and Maplesville each have primary care physicians. Opticians, chiropractors and other specialists can be found in Clanton and Jemison.

Urgent care facilities are also available in Clanton.

A number of elder care services, including nursing home, assisted living and home health services, are also located in the county.

Cahaba Medical Care in Maplesville provides medical care closer to home.

Chilton County has a number of talented musicians and artists.

This talent is showcased in events throughout the year. Local and regional musicians play at events such as Peach Jam. Some local musicians may also be heard at the third Thursday jam sessions at Pokana Talahassi in downtown Clanton or at Corner Park during an event in the City of Clanton Peach Entertainment District. The entertainment district was established in 2022 to promote events in downtown Clanton and allow for the enjoyment of open container alcoholic beverages at outdoor events within the dis-

trict. A specific cup is issued by establishments selling the alcohol and other restrictions must be followed. The Bearded Peach is the closest establishment to Corner Park that serves alcohol, but Maddogs Grill, Much A Brew, El Agave and Neighborhood Grill are also within the district presenting them with opportunities for outdoor events with food and alcohol in the future.

Visual artists have several opportunities to promote their work through annual art festivals and shows held by Chilton County Arts Council. The City of Clanton Arts Council held Artober Fest for the first time

in 2022, promoting local artists and giving them a chance to sell their work. Several classes on a variety of artforms are offered by these organizations. The City of Clanton Arts Council is looking to add performing arts classes to its scheduled in 2023.

The Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center has been the site for Dixie Flyer’s Flyball dog shows, ballets and dance competitions, AG Gun and Knife show, gymnastic competitions and Maymay Made It’s “Made It Con.”

The Arts Council also encourages creativity beyond the canvas through March Gourd Madness and Another Man’s Treasure art shows.

Live musical performances were a part of Artober Fest.

PARKS AND Recreation

Whether it is a sporting event, a relaxing weekend at the lake or an evening stroll, Chilton County has a variety of options for both indoor and outdoor recreation.

Minooka Park near Jemison offers opportunities for comfortable camping amidst scenic views. A large pavilion provides the perfect place to pause enjoy lunch and take in the beauty of the trees and far off hills. Activities available include ATV and dirt bike riding, walking, hiking and horseback riding. In addition, the park also has trails that offer some views of some of Central Alabama’s most breathtaking scenery. The park is located between Jemison and Calera in North Chilton County on U.S. Highway 31.

In Clanton, there is Goose Pond Park located on Highway 31 North with picnic tables, a pavilion and walking track. The city is researching funding to create a dog park towards the back of the park. There is also City Park located on Highway 145 with a walking trail, pavilion, playground, baseball fields, tennis courts, picnic tables and disk golf. This park is also one of the locations of the city’s three Free Little Libraries. These stand-alone shelf units allow anyone visiting the park to take a book or

leave one for the next person to enjoy.

Higgins Ferry Park offers fishing, camping, swimming and a full-service electrical hook-up for RVs along with places for primitive tent-camping. There is also a large playground. The climbing areas, slide and swings encourage children to have fun with little touches like a plastic spyglass to encourage imaginative play.

The park routinely hosts fishing tournaments.

The Higgins Ferry boat launch is open to the public, and can be accessed by taking the Lake Mitchell exit off I-65, and taking County Road 28 until it dead-ends at Higgins Ferry Park.

Jemison City Park offers tennis courts, a walking trail, pavilion, and baseball and softball fields. The city park is located at 396 Brenda Lane.

In Thorsby, Richard Wood Park is near the intersection of Alabama Avenue and

park hosts both local guests and tourists and has the only museum in Alabama that is strictly devoted to the Civil War.

One of the more picturesque places in the county is Lake Mitchell, a component of the Coosa River that lies 10 miles east of Clanton. The 5,850-acre lake averages 29 feet in depth and includes 147 miles of shoreline.

Franklin Street.

Individuals can enjoy a walking track, playground, exercise equipment, pavilion, picnic area, grills, and Movies in the Park each Friday at dusk during the month of June each year.

Maplesville has both Double Fields Park at 6741 Shanks Drive and Single Ball Field at 301 Shanks Drive. Double Fields Park offers a walking trail as part of the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail, baseball fields and a pavilion and Single Ball Field offers a playground, baseball field and pavilion.

Confederate Memorial Park near Verbena offers a family-friendly option that covers both a historical aspect and visually pleasing site. The site includes a museum, research facility, showcase of authentic historical structures, and a display of ruins and two cemeteries with more than 300 Confederate soldiers. The 102-acre

Alabama Power constructed Lay Dam in 1923 to provide flood control and hydroelectricity to central Alabama. Since then, Lake Mitchell has become a source of recreation with attractions such as boating, swimming, and fishing.

The lake also supports high densities of sport fish, such as largemouth bass, spotted bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, walleye, striped bass, hybrid, and white bass. There is also a Marina restaurant, which will open for the season April through September. The restaurant offers burger, sandwiches, catfish and other American favorites.

Those looking for indoor recreational now have a few new options including martial arts, laser tag and ax throwing. Local gyms, which off a variety of fitness classes, sporting activities and community programs are also available.

SHOPPING & Dining

The downtown districts in Chilton County remain an ideal place to find products and services offered by locallyowned establishments. A number of boutiques, restaurants and hair salons make downtown Clanton a great place to be. Both Jemison and Clanton boast family businesses that have been in operation for generations. Joining these pillars of the downtown districts are new restaurants and boutiques that have opened in recent years giving residents more options than ever before.

Jemison’s Main Street has been getting a second look in recent years as businesses have established and are expanding. A renovation

and beatification project is planned for the business portion of the street, and improvements should begin in the first few months of this year.

Clanton cuisine boasts everything from Chinese to Italian to barbecue, while Jemison offers an ice cream parlor and Mexican-inspired fare. Maplesville’s restaurants feature barbeque and Mexican food. Thorsby gives opportunities for classic Southern food, American cuisine and Mexican food.

Maplesville also offers locallyowned boutiques, hairs salons and a grocery store. Thorsby has opportunities to support small business owners through its gifts shop/ pharmacy, boutique and tanning

salon as well.

Each town also has local florists available to fill all the residents’ floral needs.

Each stop along Interstate 65 also offers delicious options, some highlighting local fare such as peaches and pecans. Restaurant offerings range from country cooking to Mediterranean street food. Jewelry and antique stores in downtown Clanton give unique options for finding the right gift for someone special in one’s life. One of which, Rustic Relics, is on the Alabama Antique Trail. Major activity can be found along Highway 31 as it runs through the heart of Chilton County’s largest cities.

As we move into year two of Chilton County and United Way of Central Alabama joining forces, funding supports nine partner agencies with local programs on the ground. One of those partner agencies is Raleigh’s Place, which provides and supports foster homes, hosts a free summer camp, provides clothing and other resources for foster families, trains foster parents and equips teenage foster youth for life after care. Since Raleigh’s Place was founded, it has housed more than 300 foster children; more than 1,000 children have attended Camp 1:27; and 630 foster children and families have received clothing through Katie’s Kloset.
