THE HISTORIC SACRAMENTO RAILYARDS IS A SPECTACULAR SITE WITH A STRONG NARRATIVE THAT ALLOWS US A GLIMPSE INTO THE PAST.
THIS DESIGN SEEKS TO ECHO ELMENTS THAT ARE REMENISCENT OF THE SITE’S PREVIOUS USES. ADJACENTLY, A MIYAWAKI FOREST JUMPSTARTS SOME MUCH NEEDED BIOREMEDIATION. THE TWO CIRCLES REPRESENT THE TWO AUDIENCES FOR WHICH THE DESIGN PERFORMS : PEOPLE + ECOSYSTEM
A HISTORIC TURNTABLE REMAINS LEAVING A 7’ DEEP CIRCULAR FOOTPRINT. THIS IS TO BE CONVERTED TO A WATER FEATURE THAT CASCADES ALL ALONG THE CIRCUMFERENCE.

SPACE STUDIES WERE CONDUCTD IN ORDER TO DEPICT A NATURAL MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE THROUGH THE SITE
A SET OF PLAZAS PROVIDES SITE USERS A SPACE TO EXPLORE AT BREAK TIME, OR PERHAPS AFTER GRABBING A BITE AT THE FOOD HALL.
BY INCORPORATING A MIYAWAKI FOREST ON SITE, A THRIVING AND BIODIVERSE PLANT COMMUNITY CAN THRIVE ON WHAT IS CURRENTLY CONSIDERED A BROWNFIELD SITE.
THE PLANTINGS FOLLOW TWO CONTRASTING
STYLES :
UNIFORMITY + ORGANICS. THESE AESTHETICS PAY HOMAGE TO THE PEOPLE WHO INHABIT THE SPACE AND THE NATURAL ECOSYSTEM IN WHICH THE SITE SITS.
TWO INTERSECTING PATHS CUT THROUGH THE DENSE MIYAWAKI FOREST. A ‘SECRET’ ENTRANCE LEADS TO THE HISTORIC PRIVY THAT HAS BEEN REPURPOSED AS A QUIRKY SPEAKEASY THEMED BAR.
ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAMMING IS PREDICTED TO HELP IMAGINE AND SHAPE THE LANDSCAPE TO BEST FIT PROPOSED FUTURE SITE USES.
YELLOW JIB STRUCTURES ARE REMINISCENT OF THE HISTORIC RAILYARDS AND ACT AS PLACEMAKERS TO GUIDE THROUGH THE SITE. CUSTOM YELLOW BENCHES ALLOW AESTHETIC CONTINUITY AND PROVIDE COMFORT FOR THOSE VISITING THE SITE.
TEXTURE AND COLOR CHANGES ACCENTUATE AESTHETIC PAVED RINGS THAT ORBIT ABOUT THE TURNTABLE FOUNTAIN AND THE MIYAWAKI FOREST. THESE RINGS SERVE AS GUIDES THAT LEAD VISITORS TO THE TWO MIRRORED ATTRACTIONS FROM THROUGHT THE ENTIRE SITE.
THE PLANTS CHOSEN FOR THE MIYAWAKI FOREST ARE NATIVE AND FAST-GROWING. BY GROWING SO DENSELY, THE FOREST MATURES 10X FASTER AND CREATES 20X MORE BIODIVERSITY. THIS METHOD PROVES EFFECTIVE EVEN ON BROWNFIELD SITES.
A PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLIST WALKWAY IS PROPOSED TO IMPROVE WAYFINDING TO NEARBY POINTS OF INTEREST. AN EXISTING BIKE-WAY MERGES WITH THE CORRIDOR, ALLOWING FOR A SEAMLESS TRANSITION.
BIOSWALES LINE EACH SIDE OF THE PEDESTRIAN-WAY, ABSORBING RAINWATER AND REMOVING CONTAMINANTS.
VACANT PARKING LOTS MAY BE REPURPOSED INTO RECREATIONAL GREEN SPACE. INTRODUCED GREENSCAPE HAS PHYTOREMEDIAL PROPERTIES WHILE ITS AESTHETICS IMPROVE NAVIGATION TO POINTS OF INTEREST THROUGH PLACEMAKING
DROP-OFF AREAS FOR AVS HAVE BEEN DETERMINED IN REFERENCE TO EXISTING MOVEMENT INFLUENCED BY THE METRO RAIL LINE AND STADIUM ENTRANCES.
A TEN-MINUTE WAITING TIME IS MONITORED TO ENCOURAGE CIRCULATION. AVES THAT ARE STILL WAITING ON A PASSENGER CAN SIMPLY LOOP BACK TO WAIT ONCE AGAIN.
PLANTINGS ALONG THE EASTERN CORRIDOR EDGE PRESENT A VIKING’S FOOTBALL-INFLUENCED COLOR SCHEME, GIVEN THE CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE U.S. BANK STADIUM.
THESE PLANTS FORM AN ELONGATED RAIN GARDEN TO ASSIST WITH STORMWATER MANAGEMENT.
A SMALL RESTING SPACE SITS ADJACENT TO THE NORTHWEST EDGE OF THE SOUTH PEDESTRIAN CORRIDOR. PLANTINGS WITH PHYTOREMEDIAL PROPERTIES ARE SELECTED TO ABSORB CONTAMINANTS.
A HIERARCHY OF PLANT HEIGHTS CREATE AREAS THAT FEEL PRIVATE, WITHOUT BEING TOO ISOLATED.
THE CLOSEST PARK TO THE HIGHLIGHTED SITE IS FATHER HENNEPIN BLUFF
PARK, ONLY .25 MILES AWAY. WITHIN 5 MILES FROM THE SITE, ONE CAN

USING ARCGIS I CREATED A CONTEXT MAP SHOWING HOLMES PARK, IN MINNEAPOLIS, MN, AND IT’S PROXIMITY TO THE GRAND ROUNDS PARKWAY. THE CLOSEST PARK TO THE HIGHLIGHTED SITE IS FATHER HENNEPIN BLUFF PARK, ONLY .25 MILES AWAY. WITHIN 5 MILES FROM THE SITE, ONE CAN TRAVEL TO MOST OF THE PARKWAY. 2 AND 5 MILES ARE RELATIVELY WALKABLE, MAKING HOLMES PARK A MAGNET LOCATION FOR BIKERS AND PEDESTRIANS TRAVELING ALONG THE PARKWAY.

TESSELATIONS CREATE COMPARTMENTS OR ‘ROOMS’ WITHIN LANDSCAPE.
FOUR ‘ZIG-ZAG’ CORRIDORS, COMPILED OF A SERIES OF THESE ROOMS STRETCH ACROSS THE SITE, LEADING FROM THE MUSEUM TO AN EXISTING TRAIL SOUTH OF THE SITE
A TREE GARDEN IS A PLACE TO CONNECT + DISCONNECT. TRAVEL ALONG THE ELEVATED PATH TO CONNECT TO YOUR NEXT DESTINATION OR CHOOSE TO DISCONNECT AND GET LOST IN UNIQUE GEOMETRIC LANDFORMS AND THE INTERACTIVE COMPARTMENTS THEY CREATE.
A LINEAR PATH DIRECTS VISITORS UP AND OVER THE BUSY TERRAIN TO PROVIDE DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE CROSS WALK AND UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AGRICULTURAL FIELDS
CONDITIONS AND PROGRAMMING ALTERNATE WITH SEASONAL CHANGE. PROPOSED LANDSCAPES SUCCESSFULLY FILTER RAIN WATER IN SPRING WHILE UNIQUE SLOPES ENCOURAGE SLEDDING DURING THE COLDER SEASONS

SEASONAL FLOOD LEVELS FLUCTUATE RESULTING IN EVER-CHANGING CONDITIONS. TOLERANT SWAMP WHITE OAK, BLACK LOCUST, AND MOSS HELP ABSORB AND DETOXIFY STORMWATER AND RUNOFF
THE PROPOSED ROCK CONDITIONS HELP TO PRESERVE AREAS WITH STEEP GRADE AND CREATE MORE RUSTIC EXPERIENCE
USING PLASTER, PLASTIC STRAWS AND HOT GLUE, A MODEL WAS CREATE TO SYMBOLIZE DIFFERING SCALES OF VERTICALITY.

AS PART OF AN UNEXPECTED SCIENCE EXPERIMENT, PARTS OF THE PLASTER BEGAN TO GROW MOLD.
MOLD PHOTOS WERE UTLIZED TO ADD A BIT OF COLOR AND CREATE AN AMBIENT SKYLINE.

A BENCH UNIT FOUND IN THE COURTYARD AT 4TH & 4TH APARTMENTS, IN THE NORTH LOOP. CUSTOM CONCRETE UNITS, ACCOMPANIED BY AN ACCENT OF TIMBER LOGS CREATE AN URBAN MODERN DESIGN WITH A HINT OF WILDERNESS.

USING WILLOW TREES AND POLLARDING, LIVING STRUCTURES ARE GROWN TO FORM DISTINCT ‘FORK’ SHAPES. THESE PORES CREATE OPTIMAL NICHES FOR NESTING WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, A FEDERALLY ENDANGERED BIRD SPECIES.
RANCHES CUT AT AN ANGLE TO PROMOTE HEALING
INOSCLUATION ENCOURAGED BY TYING TREE LIMBS TOGETHER. PERFORATED WOODEN CUBES CREATE RIGID FORMS FOR BRANCHES TO GENTLY GROW AROUND WITHOUT CAUSING ANY DAMAGE.
LEFTOVER TRIMMINGS FROM THE POLLARDING PROCESS ARE UTILIZED TO CONSTRUCT A LIVING FENCE. THIS FENCE WILL GROW SIMULTANEOUSLY, 20 FEET AWAY FROM THE NESTING STRUCTURE AND WILL ACT AS A SCREEN BY VISUALLY SEPARATING PEOPLE FROM NESTING BIRDS. THIS DELINEATION ENSURES TYPICAL NESTING CONDITIONS IN SPITE OF BIRD-WATCHERS AND OTHER DISTURBANCES.
IN ACCORDANCE TO PARAMETERS, THIS ONE-STORY LIBRARY INCLUDES A RECEPTIONIST DESK, A DIRECTOR’S OFFICE, ADA-APPROVED RESTROOMS, A RENTABLE STUDY/EVENT SPACE, AND AN OUTDOOR PATIO. ADDITIONALLY, A CAFE WITH SEATING IS PROVIDED.
