Last month, we asked you to share your favourite meals to cook while you’re travelling. Our lucky winner is Sarah Conway who says, “I love to cook up a batch of bacon and egg muffins. Just chop up some bacon, onions, and a bit of tomato.

Give them a quick fry in the pan.

Then beat up about 6-8 eggs, mix everything together, and cook for about 20 minutes in muffin trays.

They’re perfect for taking with you on walks, or for a nice little afternoon snack. Sometimes I’ll throw together a nice salad to go with them and call it lunch. Easy!”

Ricky Brijs We have lots of stir-fries when we travel in our caravan. All you need is some frozen mixed veges and your favourite meat. Quick and easy, and you can add a nice sauce or some herbs for extra flavour.

It’s all about the barbecue! Lots of steak and salads, bacon and eggs for breakfast, and maybe some prawns if we’re feeling like something really special.

Bryanna and Jerry McDonald If we’re going away for a few days, I’ll often cook up some casseroles at home before we leave. Then it’s just a matter of reheating and maybe cooking up some rice to go with it.

Pat Smith For a tasty breakfast, saute some onions in a hot pan with your favourite herbs. Next add in some tinned tomatoes and your favourite type of

tinned beans (we just use baked beans).

Once it’s nice and hot, crack in some eggs and then cover until the eggs are cooked. One pot, easy and yummy!

Manja Brinkman Cook up a big pot of mince with onion and garlic. Chop up some lettuce and tomatoes, grate some cheese. Then put it all together in a tortilla. The kids love it and it’s cheap and easy.

Our travel treat is a nice piece of salmon cooked on the barbecue. Just add some herbs and lemon and a bit of oil, wrap in tin foil and then put on the hot grill for about 10 minutes. We have ours with a few steamed veges or salad – oh and a glass of wine of course!

Easy chicken curry! Chop up some boneless chicken thighs, throw into the pan with some onion and garlic. Then just add an instant curry sauce or a dash of curry paste and some coconut cream. I usually cook enough for lunch for the next day too.

Whakatane is the ideal place to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy nature at its best

EXPLORE AN ANCIENT WONDERLAND

Many New Zealanders don’t realise that the Whakatāne District stretches 90km south of the coast to Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park and Te Urewera. It’s a fascinating part of the country, steeped in history and where locals will immerse you in their deep connection as tangata whenua.

There are many places to stop on the journey to this natural wonderland.

Heading south from Whakatāne takes you past Lake Matahina, created in 1967 when the Matahina hydro-electric dam was built.

Travel a bit further and stop for a picnic on the shore of Lake Aniwhenua – great for a 18 Motorhomes Caravans & Destinations

quick swim during the warmer months, or any time for the brave. Throw in a line too, as these inland waters offer some of the best fly-fishing conditions in the country. If you prefer a slow pace, break the trip with an overnight stop at Kohutapu Lodge. You’ll be welcomed with open arms and plenty of heartwarming kai.

Set off the next day with a guided Whirinaki Forest Footsteps walking tour – the best way to experience this immense ancient forest, with stories of the past coming to life as you walk among giants.

Or, if you prefer to go it alone, you’ll find plenty of options for a day of exploring. The Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne mountain bike trail is perfect for beginner and intermediate riders, with a 16km (2-4 hour) loop. Or walk the Waterfall Loop Track or Arohaki Lagoon Trail. Whether on bike or foot, take in 1000-year-old towering kahikatea, tōtara, matai, rimu, miro and tawa, and spot some of the 51 endangered species, including whio (blue duck), one of the many rare birds who

call Whirinaki home. Whirinaki Te-Pua-a Tāne Conservation Park is valued as a taonga (treasure) containing the living children of Tāne Mahuta, the Māori god of the forest.

Local iwi Ngāti Whare is the active kaitiaki (guardian) of the park, working with the Department of Conservation to protect the natural, cultural and historic resources for the benefit and well-being of future generations of Aotearoa and visitors. This Jurassic-like place is an experience you’ll remember forever.

THE HEART OF TE UREWERA

Remote, rugged and immense, Te Urewera is a historic hinterland of vast forests and pristine lakes that will quench the nature-lust of any outdoor enthusiast. Here your journey enters the heartland of New Zealand’s largest wilderness area, where you feel a spiritual connection with the land and its indigenous people. Te Urewera is especially unique, as it was given its own legislative act as part of the Crown settlement with Ngāi Tūhoe, in acknowledgement of the very real and

Ruatāhuna is the heart of Te Urewera – homeland of the Tūhoe tribe and the perfect place to stop for a night. If you’re not travelling in a motorhome, the chalet accommodation at the Te Tii complex is a great choice, and the mouthwatering breakfast menu at Mou Mou Kai cafe is unmissable. Sit in the morning sunshine and natter to the locals as you plan the next adventure.

For a small, remote place, Ruatāhuna has a surprising number of excellent visitor experiences. Te Urewera Treks will have you immersed in a new appreciation for the world around you as you become one with nature. And international awardwinning Manawa Honey will take you on their journey to producing the besttasting honey in the world. Te Urewera is a wonderland for honey bees, with forests filled with diverse flora, from the lower reaches of river valleys to the summits of the mountain ranges.

Once you immerse yourself into the heart of Te Urewera, you’ll likely want to extend your stay.

MUST-DO SIDE TRIP: MOUTOHORĀ ISLAND

While stocking up on supplies before your journey, take time to book a trip to Moutohorā Island – 9km offshore from Whakatāne.

Moutohorā (Whale) Island is accessible by guided tour only. The 143-hectare remnant volcano is one of Aotearoa’s best-kept secrets. This predator-free island is home to a number of rare and endangered plants, birds and reptiles. You can spot dolphins, little blue penguins, curious seals and native birds.

Tīeke/saddleback, kākāriki/red-crowned parakeet, bellbirds, tūī and grey warbler flourish – many are endangered or seldom seen on the New Zealand mainland. A visit to the island includes a stop at Sulphur Bay, where geothermal springs come up through the sand, creating your own hot pool – just like Hot Water Beach but without the crowds. 

WAIKATO GEMS A road trip takes a surprising turn as Eleanor Hughes finds three unique treasures

A

n internet search on what to see in the Waikato brought up the obvious – Hobbiton, Waitomo, Hamilton Gardens and the Blue Springs. But it also unearthed three attractions I’d never heard of. We found the first in Hamilton.

CLASSICS MUSEUM

Just off SH1, with overnight parking for self-contained campervans and caravans, the Classics Museum is fun. Even if, like me, the only thing that interests you about a car is its colour, you’re sure to enjoy it!

Entrance is through the Jukebox Diner, a 1950s American-style cafe with black and white floor tiles, red-upholstered seating, a jukebox, and Elvis gracing the walls. A waitress walked past with a gigantic burger, and as we waited at the till to pay for entrance to the museum I glanced at the cabinet food. Slices, cheesecakes, flans, monster sausage rolls … It all looked good.

Entering the museum, the first thing that made me smile was the collection of vintage tricycles, games, picnic sets and other household items, dating from perhaps the 1930s through to the 22 Motorhomes Caravans & Destinations

1960s. The radios brought back memories of my childhood home.

The 1915 Excelsior motorbike and sidecar, with its insubstantial-looking fabric roof, must have given lots of unforgettable times. The surrounding scarlet Texaco petrol pumps, all shapes and sizes, slightly prepared me for the dazzling display of colourful and gleaming cars around the corner. One hundred vehicles are displayed over two levels, backdropped by motoring signage – Shell, BP, Caltex, Firestone, Dunlop … and more classic pumps.

From the 1922 Stutz and 1927 Ford T, to a gangster-looking Packard, square-shaped Fiats, convertibles, and Porsches and Maseratis next to Triumphs and Ford Prefects, there’s bound to be a car that awakens memories. I passed an elderly woman reminiscing about her younger days, when she waved from the back of a vintage open-top, feeling like royalty. A man in his 80s laughed with his mate over motorcycle recollections. A Morris Minor reminded me of my Mum; I’d forgotten about choke knobs and infant car-seats – a metal frame with a seat. One is hooked over a front passenger seat.

My favourite was the 1959 Messerschmitt, a bluish-green, narrow, three-wheeled car with a clear, bubble roof. A model wearing a fur hat ‘drives’, her cardboard suitcase strapped on the back carry rack.

An hour and a half whizzed as we browsed the collection, which included motorcycles – the early ones just bikes with motors. There were Vespas, pedal cars, model cars, a collection of bonnet emblems, and a replica service station typical of those found in New Zealand between 1910 and 1950.

SCULPTURE PARK, WAITAKARURU ARBORETUM

About 25km from the museum, in the green Waikato countryside, the Sculpture Park at Waitakaruru Arboretum is worth at least a two-hour visit. Once a quarry, it’s been transformed over 20 years from gorse-covered land into a 17.5-hectare park, and is home to 20,000 trees from around the world. We came across the owner, John Wakeling, who informed us that this year they will have planted 1000 plants by the end of August.

White tiles at the base of trees indicate numbered descriptions in the tree guide available. Blue tiles correspond to sculptures listed on a separate sheet. Following the arrows on a 2km trail, we attempted to spot the over 100 artworks. It was like a treasure hunt. Some blended into the surroundings, others were vibrant. The giant knitting needles with a ‘knitted’ square hanging above the rock garden where succulents grow, and a black metal cross entwined with bronze-ish metal flowers on a hill were favourites.

As it was winter, camellia and bromeliads – with a few random, confused daffodils – added a colourful splash to this Garden of Significance, recognised by the New Zealand Garden Trust. We walked along tracks through native forest – the beating wings of wood pigeons breaking the silence – and beside shrublined roadways, and found idyllic ponds. The quarry pond was particularly picturesque; nestled below bush-shrouded rock cliffs, a sculptured woman sits waist-deep in a pond. Where pine forest once stood, we looked out over the surrounding area, a patchwork of green, serene paddocks; two distant ranges jutted up.

An onsite café is open at weekends and public holidays, but closed in June, July and August.

GLOW-WORM KAYAKING

From Cambridge, we headed to the Lake District Adventures base for night kayaking on Lake Karapiro. It was July and 5°C, but kitted out with woollen socks, dive boots, jackets and over-trousers, we were warm. With a quick lesson on paddling techniques we were off by 4pm in a double kayak, our guide Caleb alongside.

On still Waikato waters, we paddled upriver, passing over where a Māori village once stood. Most of its buildings were dismantled before the area was flooded – just a wooden beam poking above the surface marks where it once stood. Railway lines and stairs descend into the murky river at the site of the three-storey Horahora Power Station, submerged in 1947 when Lake Karapiro was formed. Its roof removed, divers apparently explore it, and it’s said that one of the turbines still spins. Green bird-nest boxes on poles in the water, branches adorning them, are meant to attract warblers.

Swinging left, we kayaked up Pokaiwhenua Stream, which narrowed through a dim gorge about a kayak-length wide. Water dripped down high rock sides coated in moss and ferns. The coo of wood pigeons echoed. We took a short break at a grassy flat area and snacked while darkness descended, learning that a glowworm is in fact glowing maggot poo.

Back on water, the current carried us along behind Caleb, the reflecting tape on his paddle the only indication of where he was.

With only the occasional dip of the paddles required to keep to the middle of the narrow sliver of night above us, we mostly 26 Motorhomes Caravans & Destinations

avoided gentle collisions with the gorge banks. Clusters of glowworms shone on either side, galaxy-brilliant; others were random pin-pricks, like the lights of remote rural homes. A morepork broke the silence.

Emerging from the stream, we found the crescent moon reflected in the motionless river, along with sporadic lights from homes; the Milky Way illuminated the dark sky. We disturbed swans as we paddled past, and 2¾ hours after starting out, the magical 5.2km journey was over.

These not-so-well-known sights were Waikato ‘wows’… and with still more to explore, I’ll be back. 

hen I opened the door to Katherine Mansfield’s birthplace, I felt as if I’d entered a portal to another century.

Classical music playing in the background further evoked this mood. I blinked and took in these historical surroundings from the vantage point of the entrance hall.

So, this was where the young Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp, as she was christened, started her life in 1888.

From my visit, I hoped to gain insight into her creative mind, and learn more about her life.

A WEALTHY FAMILY

Her father, Harold Beauchamp, was an ambitious man. As one of the first directors of the Bank of New Zealand and a member of the Wellington Harbour Board, he wanted a house that reflected his aspirations. The Italianate residence, in Tinakori Road, was decorated in the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic Movement style, in vogue in the late Victorian era: bold colour (an influence from Africa, India and Asia) and ornately patterned wallpaper.

Between 1888 and 1893, the extended Beauchamp family lived there – Harold and his wife Annie, Katherine and her older sisters Vera and Charlotte, her baby sisters Gwendoline and Jeanne, her maternal grandmother Margaret, aunts Kitty and Belle, and a maid. When Katherine was five, they moved to a much bigger house in Karori. This decision was partly dictated by the need to get away from disease caused by the lack of sanitation. Katherine’s brother, Leslie, was born after they moved to Karori.

A PEEK BACK IN TIME

The scullery has bare timber floorboards and simple match lining, a colonial-style clothes airer, a scrubbing board, kitchen utensils and Mrs Maclurcan’s cookbook, popular in that era.

In Katherine’s story ‘A Birthday’, we read of the backbreaking task of housework when the visiting doctor scolds the man of the house for suggesting his wife has no nerve. “Nerve. Man alive! She’s got twice the nerve of you and me rolled into one. Nerve. She’s nothing but nerve. A

woman who works as she does about the house and has three children in four years, thrown in with the dusting, so to speak.”

Spot on, Katherine. Being wealthy enough to afford a servant significantly reduced the burden of domestic labour on the women of the family.

Next to the scullery is a simply decorated kitchen, with a coal range.

Rows of preserved fruit in jars line some shelves. I can imagine the children of the household darting mischievously in and out, asking for scraps of dough or morsels of freshly baked biscuits and cake.

DINING AND ENTERTAINING

In contrast, the formal dining room and drawing room are luxuriously decorated, with the best china and exotic knickknacks on display.

These were rooms for entertaining and impressing visitors, and for practising music. The Beauchamp sisters all had music lessons, and Annie was keen to show off her daughters’ talents when visitors came calling, often on a Friday – known as Mrs Beauchamp’s ‘at home’ day.

Here again, family life provided material for the acutely observant Katherine. Her character Mrs Sheridan, in ‘The Garden Party’, says, “What nonsense calling is.

What a waste of time. I’ve never met a single woman yet who even pretended to like it. Why keep it up then?”

In colonial New Zealand, the husband was the master of the house, and the dining room was his domain. ‘Prelude’ describes Stanley Burnell at the dinner table. “He ran his eye along the edge of the carving knife. He prided himself very much on his carving, on making a first-class job of it. He hated seeing a woman carve, they were always too slow, and they never seemed to care what the meat looked like afterwards. Now, he did. He took real pride in cutting delicate shaves of cold meat; little wads of mutton just the right thickness and dividing a chicken or a duck with nice precision.”

Katherine’s enjoyment of food, particularly puddings, is apparent in ‘A Young Girl’. “He took a chocolate crème, a chocolate éclair, a meringue stuffed with chestnut, and a tiny horn filled with fresh strawberries … ‘I say – what about ice, Hennie? What about tangerine and ginger?

No, something cooler. No, what about fresh pineapple cream?’”

STAIRS AND STORIES

As I climbed the stairway with its handcarved balustrade, I read that Katherine was fascinated by areas of transition such as stairs, windows and train stations. In a letter written in 1921 to her friend Dorothy Brett, she said, “Don’t you think the stairs are a good place for reading letters? I do. One is somehow suspended.

One is on neutral ground – not in one’s own world nor in a strange one. They are an almost perfect meeting place.

Oh heavens! How stairs do fascinate me when I think of it. Waiting for people – sitting on strange stairs – hearing steps far above, watching the light playing by itself – hearing far below a door looking down into a kind of dim brightness, watching someone come up. But I could go on forever. Must put them in a story, though!

A PRECOCIOUS TALENT

The upstairs master bedroom pays a grand tribute. Painted red (apparently a favourite colour of hers), it has an easy-to-follow timeline of her life and achievements.

I learned that she began writing from a very young age – winning first prize, aged 9, for her story ‘Enna Blake’; at 12 she started a school magazine, while at Wellington Girls’ College. One of her teachers described her as “a surly sort of

girl” who was “imaginative to the point of untruth”.

In 1903 the Beauchamps sailed to England, and Katherine, Vera and Charlotte attended Queen’s College in London. Many new influences and experiences entered her world during this period: writers, musicians and friends alike. In 1906 the family returned to New Zealand, which seemed dull in comparison, and the young Katherine railed against it furiously.

Bowing to her parents’ wishes, she enrolled at Wellington Technical Institute to study typing and bookkeeping.

However, this wasn’t the future the headstrong and passionate young woman had in mind. Her first choice of career was to be a professional cellist. From a young age she’d had lessons and showed considerable talent, but her parents opposed it.

ESCAPE TO ENGLAND

At 18, Katherine declared in a letter to her cousin Sylvia Payne, “In future I shall give all my time to writing”. After badgering her father to let her return to England, at age 19, in 1908, she sailed for London, never to return.

Once there, her life took on many new dimensions: exciting friends and literary mentors, lovers, a miscarriage, marriage, travels in Europe and sadly, a downward spiral into ill-health. The loss of her brother, Leslie, in 1915 during World War 1, seemed to trigger nostalgia for scenes from their childhood, and inspired her to write even more. Katherine died in 1923, aged 34, from tuberculosis while living in France.

A LASTING LEGACY

Fortunately her husband, John Middleton Murry, with whom she had an onoff relationship, preserved her stories (editing and publishing them) for future generations of readers to enjoy.

The impression I gained from my visit was that she was a free spirit: highly imaginative, emotional, impressionable, creative, stubborn, observant and volatile.

All these qualities are fertile soil in which creativity can flourish, and in this artist, it certainly did.

If Katherine had been living today, I wonder whether she would have been seen as unconventional or eccentric? I think she would have fully embraced the extensive opportunities available to her. Writing, at least, liberated her from the narrow range 32 Motorhomes Caravans & Destinations

In a 1906 letter to Sylvia Payne, she wrote, “Would you not like to try all sorts of lives? – one is so very small – but that is the satisfaction of writing – one can impersonate so many people.”

RESTORATION

25 Tinakori Road was purchased in 1987 by the Katherine Mansfield Birthplace Society, and the arduous task of restoration began. Further work was completed in 2019.

The house was initially intended to be a writers’ residence, but the refurbishment took a different turn when some of the original decor was discovered intact. As a result, the society decided to create a museum to show how the Beauchamps lived during their time there.

The upgrade revealed scraps of the original wallpaper behind the skirting boards, and uncovered the original

hand-carved bamboo balusters on the stairs.

Because the original plans weren’t available, the society was guided by descriptions of the house from Katherine’s writings, and photographs and archaeological analyses, to recreate the home and garden.

The garden is planted with flowers often mentioned in her stories – chrysanthemums, geraniums, hydrangeas, heritage roses, wisteria; and trees and shrubs such as lemon, hebes and magnolias. Katherine Mansfield House & Garden: 25 Tinakori Road, Thorndon, Wellington. ON THE TRAIL OF TASTY TREATS

From breakfast to dinner, Denise Stephens samples local fare in Hamilton

H

amilton’s streets were quiet as I headed to the Waikato Farmers’ Market, eagerly anticipating breakfast treats. This was the start of a relaxing Sunday spent feasting on fresh local food, tasting new flavours, and buying some gourmet goodies to take home.

The market was already buzzing when I arrived at 8am. Some people were leaving with bags laden with fresh vegetables, milk and other produce, while others chatted over coffee at tables outside. Through the wide open doors of The Barn, I glimpsed shoppers browsing stalls filled with a wide array of food.

COFFEE AND PASTRIES

Finding breakfast was first on the agenda.

Locals were queuing for Volare’s awardwinning bread and pastries, so I had time to examine the extensive range before ordering. Sourdough, ciabatta, grain loaves and baguettes filled the shelves.

The selection on the counter included their renowned croissants, scones, pain au chocolat and Danish pastries. I decided on a peach and pistachio pastry, and a morning bun with a deliciously sticky filling of cinnamon, sugar and citrus peel rolled up inside.

While I was looking for a latte to go with the pastries, the aroma of freshly roasted coffee drew me to Manuka Brothers. They roast small batches of arabica beans in a wood-fired roaster, which gives the coffee a distinctive flavour. The stall displayed a range of coffee including single origin beans

and their own Manuka Brothers Blend, served at the nearby espresso machine.

The pleasant outdoor seating area was surrounded by trees. A musician played the guitar and sang while people enjoyed the coffee and food they’d just bought. After breakfast, it was time to go inside for some more serious shopping.

LOCAL PRODUCE

The market has been going since 2006, offering local producers a place to sell their wares. Many stalls sold organic produce, and some specialised in a single seasonal item, such as persimmons. These orange fruit were magnificent, and the man behind the counter commented that they were larger this year. A sample slice proved they tasted as good as they looked, so I bought two kilos.

from Putāruru, displayed a tempting array of cheeses made from sheep, cow and goat milk. Even after sampling several it was difficult to choose, but I settled for wedges of Burgundy Moon and Creamy Blue. Burgundy Moon is rind-washed with merlot grape skins, giving the rind a distinctive texture and a slightly fruity flavour. The Creamy Blue was recommended as an accompaniment to my persimmons. I tried this at lunch, and it was a delicious combination of textures and flavours.

I wandered along the aisles, past stalls selling vegetables, preserves, fresh pasta, salami and raw milk, stopping to taste morsels here and there.

At Sweetree Honey, as I sampled their location-specific honeys, I learned more about the vegetation that gives them their flavour.

Kirikiriroa honey comes from hives in the city, including some at Hamilton Gardens, so the bees collect pollen from suburban garden plants. Horsham Downs is a pasture honey, recommended for sweetening tea. After tasting several, I added a jar of the smooth Kirikiriroa to my shopping bag.

By the time I left the market, I had supplies for lunch and dinner, plus some special local products to take back home.

TEA TOUR

In the afternoon I drove to Zealong Tea Estate, 20 minutes away from Hamilton.

The Discover Tea Tour introduces visitors to the history of tea while they stroll through the beautiful grounds.

Our guide, Abby, started by serving us a sample of Fire and Ice, a warming blend of black tea, mānuka and ginger, with a refreshing touch of mint. We followed her down the Tea Path, past neat rows of bushes, while she explained how tea is grown and processed at Zealong.

The estate only grows a single variety of oolong tea bush, with 2 million bushes all propagated from the 130 original plants.

The journey from the bush to the cup starts with tea pickers removing only the top three leaves on each stem. The leaves are then sun-dried and tossed. Oolong and black teas go through an oxidation process, which deepens the colour and changes the flavour, while green tea is left as it is. The leaves are tightly rolled into heavy cloth bundles and then dried. This process may be repeated several times as the tea master works towards the desired taste.

Although we could see the fields and factory building from the Tea Path, to avoid contamination we couldn’t go into either place. Zealong is fully organic, with several international certifications, and maintaining hygiene and food safety standards is an important part of their business.

The tour ended with a tasting on the verandah of the tea house. We sat at a table made from a highly polished cinnamon slab, with small cups and bowls in front of us. Abby demonstrated how to pour tea from our cup to the bowl by holding them together and turning them upside down.

Then she started the ritual of pouring hot water from a height, warming the pots, jugs and cups first, before making pots of tea.

We tried five varieties – green, jasmine oolong, aromatic oolong, dark oolong and black tea.

Starting with the green tea, we inhaled the aroma and sipped each tea in turn to compare all five. Abby recommended dark oolong for coffee drinkers. Although its toasted flavour was appealing, the coffee lovers at the table decided the slightly smoky aromatic oolong was more to our taste. I enjoyed it so much that I bought a packet at the end of the tour.

Driving back to Hamilton, I looked forward to finishing the day with a delicious meal with local vegetables, pasta and cheese, followed by a good cup of tea. 

he gravel road to get there had always put me off, but finally I bit the bullet and got brave.

And it wasn’t so bad. Taking it slowly, it took just under two hours to reach Lake Waikaremoana Holiday Park from Murupara, a distance of around 75km.

I might have done it slightly faster if the signage had been better – at times I wondered if I was going the right way. It was worth it though.

Te Urewera Visitor Centre looks out over the eastern side of the lake, just before the entrance to the holiday park.

There was local information, including a leaflet on 18 short walks ranging from 30 minutes to 6 hours, and walkable from the park or slightly further afield. You can also hire rods, and row boats from here that are moored on Lake Waikareiti, an hour’s walk from Aniwaniwa Stream road bridge

– about 3 or 4 kilometres from the park by road. The centre is also an iwi meeting place.

LAKE WAIKAREMOANA GREAT WALK

We stopped in to confirm our next day’s water taxi booking to the start of the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk. We planned to hike over four days, staying in basic DOC huts. These have compostable toilets, bunk beds with mattresses, kitchen benches with sinks and cold running water, and seating.

Hikers need to take in food, gas burners and all cooking and sleeping equipment.

DAY ONE

We accessed the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk, a 46km hike skirting the western side of the lake, from Onepoto Bay shelter.

The 9.2km drive from the campground,

on gravel, took 25 minutes. A sign on the side of the road points out the Great Walk. Follow this for Onepoto Bay Shelter and the water taxi. Parking in the carpark, we had to hunt for the sign to the boat ramp, which ended up being perhaps a 100-metre walk from the shelter, to catch the water taxi.

The 20-minute boat ride took us across the middle of the lake, with a spectacular view of the Panekire Bluff (which we would be climbing on day three), into the northern arm. We were dropped at a small beach just south of Whanganui Hut. This is around 4km from Hopuruahine Landing, where the Great Walk officially starts/finishes. There is parking at the landing, so walkers could drive here and begin their hike, about a 30–40-minute drive from the holiday park. They could then get a water taxi back to south of

Whanganui Hut, once finished, and walk back out to the Hopuruahine Landing.

Advised by others, we walked from south to north, the opposite way to what most people do. This meant we didn’t have to climb the steeper Panekire Bluff side, and instead came down it. We also wouldn’t have to rush for a water taxi deadline, being able to walk out to Onepoto Bay Shelter at our leisure.

The tree-lined trail followed the shoreline for around an hour, passing through Tapuaenui campsite. There is a shelter here, and it would be a good spot for lunch, if you wanted a day walk from Hopuruahine Landing – a return trip of around 14km on flat trail.

Ascending Pukehou Ridge, a rise of about 100 metres, and then descending, we arrived at the newish, 40-bunk Waiharuru Hut. From our drop-off, the roughly 5.5km took about 2¾ hours.

It was a great lunch stop. We continued along a trail looking as if it was sprinkled with tan, gold and brown confetti, the fallen leaves of beech trees. Valley floors were punga draped; moss covered rocks and sawn trunks; black, buttressed trunks towered above us. Streams and rivers were crossed and the shoreline skirted again.

We reached Marauiti Hut at 2.30pm, taking 5½ hours to hike about 11.5km.

The 25-bed hut was painted pastel green inside, reminding me of a 1960s bach. It has seen better days but does the job. Sited on the lakefront, it’s a perfect place to spend the afternoon. The water was rather chilly, even in mid-February, but I took a quick dip to wash off the grime and sweat of a long hike. Huts don’t have electricity, so it’s an early-ish night once darkness descends.

DAY TWO: MARAUITI HUT TO WAIOPAOA HUT

Our second day started through a forest of drooping rimu, and led to the crystal-clear lakeside where a narrow, yellow-sand beach made a good morning tea stop. The water reflected the surrounding bush. Again thick with fallen beech leaves, which also carpeted punga valleys, the trail brought

us above the lake. Between branches and leaves, the view of teal water was stunning.

By early afternoon we reached a sidetrack to Korokoro Falls. The one-hour return walk (we dumped our packs in the bush so we didn’t have to carry them) was picturesque: green-carpeted rocks, a variety of ferns spreading below high trees whose roots wandered snake-like.

It followed a tumbling river, crossed by walking across large boulders with a wire at hand-height to keep our balance. We viewed the 22-metre Korokoro Falls from opposite its crest. The water fell in sheets, throwing up mist which settled on my arms and face.

Twelve kilometres to Waiopaoa Hut, plus the walk to Korokoro Falls, took us 6½ hours. Set perhaps 50 metres back from the lakeside, the hut has 30 beds in two rooms, and looked nearnew. The sandy beach was inviting, the water warmer than the day before and refreshing, but going deeper I found the bottom was covered in thick weed, which was a little off-putting. Pesky sandflies necessitated covering up as much as possible in the late afternoon/evening.

DAY THREE: TO PANEKIRE HUT

Next morning saw us tackling Panekire Bluff. It was straight uphill, a little undulation then more up, up, up.

Reaching a brow we entered dim, verdant forest, branches like old, withered arms stretching and twisting. Magical. I felt as if I was one of the first to ever walk through the area. Views glimpsed through foliage showed a glass-like lake, reflecting deep-green, creased hills. The temperature cooled the higher we got; the distant brown hills bathed in sun looked inviting.

The 8km to Panekire Hut, which stands at 1180 metres, took 3¼ hours.

It was a long afternoon spent enjoying the spectacular lake view. To the left the water shone silvery grey, to the right it was blue. Panekire Hut is well-worn, sleeping 36 in two bunkrooms. You don’t want to arrive too late or you might end up having to sleep in the third level of bunks, almost coffin-like below the corrugated iron roof.

Walkers could continue on the trail and complete the Great Walk instead of staying at the hut, but it would make for a 17km day, taking around 7½ hours.

It took us 4¼ hours, the next day, to walk from Panekire to Onepoto Landing, a distance of 9km. The mostly downhill walk offered striking views high above the lake and wandered through trees looking like giant bonsai, wrapped in skeins of moss. A five-minute trail to a lookout off the main track, not signposted but obvious, is worth doing. It leads to a rocky cliff where you can sit, take in the views and get some great photos. Stretched out far below, sparkling blue water spreads between fingers of bush-covered land twisting and turning to form inlets. Various other lookouts, just a step off the track, gave more dramatic views before we descended, leaving ancient forest behind to walk through areas where tree roots were like daddy long-legs, raised above the ground. It looked as if the trees would be capable of walking off.

At the end of the trail, 10 minutes before reaching Onepoto Landing, there is a short, 10-minute track to Lake Kiriopukae.

This easy bush walk leads to what is more a waterhole than a lake. Large boulders, strewn across the flat, grassy area near the water’s edge, reminded me of ruins.

Walking here from Onepoto Landing would take around 40 minutes return.

Onepoto Landing has a shelter with information on the Māori legend of Lake Waikaremoana’s formation, as well as the geological version. A timeline details occupation of the lake dating back to the 1500s, the formation of Te Urewera National Park, the track’s construction in 1963, and power schemes. A map of the Great Walk gives distances and times.

Loath to leave this beautiful, remote area, we found a way down to the lake’s edge for one last dip in its waters before the long, gravel drive back to civilisation. 

’ve just ambled a kilometre along what is arguably Auckland’s loveliest beach.

For those who haven’t been there, it’s where a wide spread of sandy beach adjoins a marine reserve, 25km north of downtown Auckland. Stretching the length of the shore is an expansive undulating, grassy reserve covering about 16 hectares and liberally planted with bushes, Norfolk pines, and pōhutukawa trees that offer shady spots for picnicking and barbecues. By day, particularly during summer weekends, the park is a favourite haunt of leisure-seeking Aucklanders.

Long Bay offers a great opportunity for RVers to stay close to New Zealand’s largest city without actually being in it. At night the park empties except for certified self-contained motorhomes and caravans which, for a small charge, can park on specified sites overnight. Then, the crowds have gone and the reserve is hushed and blissfully peaceful. The only sounds are the rumbling of waves against the shore and the peevish mewing of seagulls scanning for tidbits. And it was wonderful to wake up early the next morning and have the whole beach to myself.

HISTORY

For nearly a hundred years, 600 hectares of this coast and its hinterland were farmed by generations of the Vaughn family.

The restored homestead, built by George Vaughn in 1861, perches on a small hill at the far end of the beach, and is easily visited. Although it has been added to over the years, it is still a good example of a timber farmhouse of that early era.

The Vaughns eventually ran the current picnic area as a campground, before selling the farm to Auckland Regional Council in 1965.

Since then walkways have been developed, leading up over the cliffs and down to Grannys Bay and Pohutukawa Bay. If you have good walking legs, you can go on another 4km to the Okura River.

Recently upgraded, the tracks are another compelling reason to visit the park.

George Vaughn would not recognise his farm today. On the hills behind the park, a large area of high-density housing has been developed. This was not without a battle, as locals were vociferous in their concern about the environmental impact.

As a result, plans made space for buffers of greenery, including a large swampland that is planted with mānuka, reeds and cabbage trees, between the village and the park.

WHERE TO EAT

The development has meant that staying overnight at Long Bay (or visiting by day) has another attraction. The new road that skirts the swamp leads to the village, where I found the best fish and chips I’ve tasted in a long time.

I can also vouch for the delicious Turkish, Greek and Moroccan dishes at Obello Restaurant (great for lunch).

There are several smaller cafes, and on Bounty Street there is a popular gastropub in the Long Bay Surf Club.

For those resistant RVers who still insist on home cooking, there’s an extensive New World supermarket.

In warmer weather, Long Bay becomes a multicultural potpourri. One perfect beachside day last summer, I set off on a quest to find as many cultures as I could. Three beautiful daughters of Islam wandered along in headscarves and flowing skirts. They came from Lebanon. A large group of Samoans wearing identical purple shirts, and descended from the same greatgrandfather, had bagged one of the barbecues for a family reunion. A Chinese family was searing spare ribs on a gas fire; a Korean man was heating dumplings in a pan. Two Englishmen, recently arrived in New Zealand, sprawled pinkly in the sun. Where once only sheep enjoyed this stunning place, I spoke to people from Turkey, Tonga, South Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Italy, Malaysia, Egypt, Croatia, Germany and America, all of whom said they were now resident in Auckland.

he Central Otago and Queenstown-Lakes districts are known for their breathtaking mountain and lake scenery, endless tourist attractions and stunning autumn colours – and for not always being the most motorhome-friendly part of New Zealand. However, the town of Wānaka might be the exception.

Although you won’t find any freedom camping spots in Wānaka either, compared to its bigger sibling, Queenstown, and other parts of the region, the feeling is much more welcoming. From several highly rated camping grounds, including affordable options, to easy parking in town and a very well set-up dump station, the town does a lot to ensure RVers have an enjoyable time.

WHERE TO STAY

RVers are spoiled for choice when it comes to finding a place to stay. The Lake View Holiday Park is the most convenient option for those who like to be close to town. The park gets excellent reviews and is an easy stroll from the town centre and the lake. Just slightly further out of town are the Mt Aspiring Holiday Park and the Wanaka Top 10 Holiday Park – both also popular among travellers.

Those who don’t need holiday park facilities can find a more affordable option five minutes out of town, at the Albert 54 Motorhomes Caravans & Destinations

Town Campground. And those who love stunning lake views and old-school Kiwi charm will enjoy Glendhu Bay Motor Camp, 15 minutes northwest of the town.

VISIT ‘THAT WĀNAKA TREE’

No visit is complete without taking a photo of the famous tree – a crack willow bending into the lake. It’s believed to be one of the most photographed trees in New Zealand, if not the world, and for good reason. With the lake around it and the Southern Alps in the background, it makes for a stunning sight, especially on clear days and when the sun is low in the sky. Find the tree by walking west from town, along the lakefront, for about 25 to 30 minutes.

BE AMAZED AT PUZZLING WORLD

This might sound like an attraction mainly for kids, but Puzzling World is not just for the little ones – especially the illusion rooms, which seem to defy logic and will engage your senses and challenge your brain. Across the five rooms, you can try to escape the eyes of Einstein, watch water flow uphill, see yourself shrink, and marvel

at impossible art, plus a whole lot more.

It’s also a great place to enjoy lunch or coffee while trying to solve some of the free puzzles and mind-benders you’ll find around the Think Tank Cafe.

GO TO THE MOVIES

In most towns, the movie theatre wouldn’t necessarily make it onto the list of activities. But Paradiso Cinema deserves to be called an attraction. Instead of your standard cinema seats, here you can enjoy movies from the comfort of sofas and luxurious leather seating. The cafe and bar serve delicious meals, and old Morris Minor cars give the cinema that quirky yet comfortable touch it’s famous for.

And if that doesn’t convince you it’s time to go to the movies, this probably will: homemade ice cream and worldfamous fresh cookies are served during intermission.

Lake Wānaka. It’s said to be a few degrees warmer than the main lake, so if you're visiting in summer, you might want to bring your swimming gear.

4-hour uphill battle, but the views from the top are worth it. Consider hiking up for sunrise, for an unforgettable experience. If this track is too long or too crowded for you, Mt Aspiring National Park offers countless others for all fitness levels.

Suitable for most cyclists, the 12km Hawea River Track links Lake Hāwea township to Wānaka, via Albert Town. The 15km Glendhu Bay Track offers stunning lake and mountain views, and just up the road from Glendhu Bay, you can find Bike Glendhu, Wānaka’s newest mountain bike park.

For winter sports enthusiasts, Wānaka is one of THE destinations in New Zealand.

FIND THE LAKE WITHIN THE LAKE

A lesser-known attraction is Arethusa Pool, on Mau Waho Island in Lake Wānaka.

To get there, book a water taxi – the trip takes about 45 minutes and is a great way to see the township and its surrounding mountains from the water. Once on the 2km long, predator-free island, tackle the 20-minute uphill hike to see the pool. This lake sits 150 metres above the surface of

Cardrona makes for a great little side-trip.

Although the road is steep and winding when coming from Queenstown, and therefore not suitable for some RVers, it’s an easy drive from Wānaka. Along the way, you get to enjoy views of the Crown Ranges, and once in Cardrona, the famous hotel is a great spot for lunch. The few little shops are worth a stroll through as well, and the cafe at the northern end of the settlement offers excellent coffee and homemade baking. If you have extra time, you could stop at the Cardrona Distillery with its impressive buildings, just north of the settlement. 

AKAROA FRENCH FESTIVAL: 15–17 OCTOBER

A holiday in France might be off the cards for now, but you can still enjoy a little joie de vivre south-east of Christchurch, at this biennial festival. The three-day event is officially opened on Friday 15 October, followed by live music and lights, set amongst stalls selling food and wine.

SEA CHANGE Like many before them, Arthi and Gary Fogelberg transferred their passion for boating to a love of motorhoming.

Five months ago they bought an RV, and adapted easily to exploring on dry land. They talk to Jill Malcolm What was your boating experience?

We had owned and enjoyed a yacht for the past 10 years. But when our two boys left home, we realised we couldn’t justify the costs that boat ownership demands. And as we didn’t use it at all during the long winter months, it seemed to be a lot of work and money for the number of times we were going out on the water.

Why did you decide to buy a motorhome?

We’d thought about the possibility of buying a motorhome for quite a while before we sold the yacht. Actually, it was a bit more than a thought, because we had started looking around on the internet, and were already beginning to work out what might suit us.

What did you identify as important to you?

GARY: It was more about the actual vehicle to start with. For the convenience of parking, backing and other manoeuvres we wanted it to be narrow, not too high and definitely without a Luton.

It was important to have something that Arthi would have confidence driving.

So quite early on in our research, it became apparent that a converted van would be most suitable. We wanted a walk-through from the home to the cab and, of course, it had to be fully selfcontained. The only other aspect we were definite about was that it be a two-berth.

The rest was flexible.

What did you buy?

At the RV Super Centre in Albany we were shown a 2015 KEA, ex-rental, Nomad M700 on a Mercedes Sprinter. It ticked all the boxes (bar one) and offered

a lot more besides. Strictly speaking, the Nomad is a 2.5 berth, not a two-berth, as the dinette behind the driver’s seat converts to a small single bed. We thought we would never use it, but on one occasion it has already proved useful.

We liked the fact that the motorhome came at a fixed price. There was no negotiating, which made the buying process simple. We got what we paid for and could be confident there would

be no unwanted or costly surprises. The van also came with a one-year warranty.

Inside and out it was very well presented, almost like new, because the company does a thorough clean and spruce-up when vehicles are returned from the rental fleet, and fixes any maintenance issues.

Have you made any changes?

GARY: Yes, and we are learning as we go.

The couple replaced the curtains between the home and cab with reflective windscreen mats

were fixed over the wheel under a rear seat, and took up too much space. I took them out and fixed the rubbish bin to one side of the kitchen bench near the sliding door. Now we can fit the bedding into the space under the seat. I fitted a tea towel rail to the side of the bench nearest the side door and in the bathroom, hooks for hanging our wet jackets. I also took out the half-size wardrobe and filled the space with shelves. This means we don’t have a wardrobe, but we don’t find that a hardship. We just don’t take clothes that need hanging. We took out the curtains between the passenger seat and the home area, and replaced them with reflective windscreen mats so that we can use the rotating seats at night.

Another thing we might address at some stage is the water pump, which is quite noisy, although it’s noisier inside the van than outside. We were concerned it might upset our neighbours! The vehicle doesn’t come with an awning and at this stage, we feel we don’t need one and that some sort of tarpaulin might do the job. But we’re still thinking that through and could change our minds.

How do you find the interior space?

GARY: The home is a bit tight on space, but well thought out. As long as we have the systems sorted and work out the flow for various chores, it’s comfortable and 66 Motorhomes Caravans & Destinations

In a small kitchen the trick is to be well organised and keep meals simple

easily managed. To make a smaller space work, the challenge, as in yachting, is to be organised and systematic. In this way, you get around the compromises in the layout design and facilities.

Our morning routine, for instance, is that Arthi gets up and puts the kettle on for tea while I put the bedding away (in plastic to keep it dust-free) which only takes a few minutes. Then we have the space to get showered and dressed, and prepare breakfast.

ARTHI: The bathroom is very small and has no cupboards, shelves, towel rails or mirrors. We’ve put a stick-on basket on one wall for shampoo and soap, and use heavy-duty stick-on hooks for heavier containers. The handbasin is tiny and sits in one corner, so to rinse our teeth we use mugs. There’s a mirror on the wall outside the bathroom and we use that for anything we have to look at while abluting, as when Gary shaves. None of this presented a major inconvenience once we worked it out.

Another example is dishwashing. There’s not enough room for two people to stand at the bench, so one of us washes at the sink and hands the wet dishes to the other who is seated at the dinette table, with the tea towel in hand.

In any compact area, another way to prevent chaos is to have a designated place for everything and a routine for putting

each thing away after it’s used. This is not a problem for us because we are yachties, but it could be a learning curve for some.

How does the culinary department work?

There’s not a lot of bench space?

Both of us like to cook and luckily, we’re not messy cooks. Planning and keeping things simple are the keys. We don’t try to be too ambitious. The van has a three-burner gas cooktop and there’s an exterior slide-out barbecue at the rear of the van which is very handy in fine weather. The 110L fridge seems to have enough space at the moment, but we haven’t yet been away for long periods. We may have to add some sort of chiller bin. The storage space is adequate.

We could probably go for a week without having to top up on groceries.

Are you pleased you’ve made the switch from yachting?

We’re thrilled. We absolutely love this way of exploring the small towns, regional parks and DOC camps around New Zealand, and we go away as much as work and weather will allow. We’ve already met some great people and stayed at some wonderful locations even in the middle of winter.

The best so far has been the DOC camp at Tapotupotu Bay near Cape Rēinga in Northland. But as we journey around the country we’re sure we’ll come upon plenty more that are just as good. 

TOW THE LINE

As caravanning gains in popularity, it’s timely to look at the basic tasks of towing and hitching – and how to avoid costly mistakes.

N

ew Zealanders’ appetite for adventure knows no bounds, so it’s little wonder people are attracted to the freedom that owning a caravan brings. But getting to grips with the nitty gritty of towing and hitching can be challenging – and getting it wrong can be expensive.

To help make your caravan journey safe and enjoyable, we’ve put together some practical tips from industry experts and the team at Covi NZMCA Insurance.

SELECTING A TOW VEHICLE

Many factors will determine whether your tow vehicle and caravan will combine well to provide smooth handling and more importantly, safe towing.

Brent Thurlow, manager of Taupō-based caravan dealership Central RV, says most buyers look at things like size, price, internal features and decor, but never take the caravan they are looking to purchase for a test tow, which he says is a mistake.

“You can do as much research as you like online, but really the most important thing you can and should do is take it for a test tow at the dealership,” he explains.

A lot of people use Toyota Landcruisers or Ford Rangers, but the caravan itself is a big factor in how it tows – it’s not just about the tow vehicle.

“Some companies don’t allow that, so it’s hard for customers to know what handles nicely (when being towed by a particular vehicle) and is safe, and what isn’t,” says Thurlow. A buyer needs to look beyond the towing capacity as that’s just one aspect.

TOW BAR TYPES AND HITCHES

Jayco Canterbury manager Tony McWhirter says simple things make a huge difference, such as ensuring the tow bar and caravan hitch are at the same height. You can achieve a more even level with an interchangeable tongue (within limits). Although not common in New Zealand, tow stabilisers (or stability bars) are also available, if you are getting a lot of swing.

The loaded weight of the caravan is a key consideration, as is the weight of the vehicle you’re towing it with – including all luggage and passengers. A Ford Ranger has a 3.5-tonne tow-rating and 10 percent of that rating is what’s able to be put on the downforce tow ball, whereas in some European SUVs that’s only 5 percent, and that has caught a few people out!

It pays to remember that 10 percent of the weight of the caravan goes onto the drawbar. It’s transferred through the suspension of the tow vehicle, so the strength of its suspension is also a factor.

Some vehicles just don’t tow well, so do your research and ask the caravan dealer for a tow test. You want to ensure you’re not driving something that simply isn’t a good match.

SAFETY CHAINS/CABLES

A breakaway and relative brakecontroller is essential, mandated by law for caravans with electric brakes. While not legally required, most caravans also come with safety chains. This can be draw-bar mounted if it’s a 1.5-2.5-tonne unit, but must be an in-cab control system if it’s over 2.5 tonne.

SAFE WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION

McWhirter and Thurlow agree that proper weight distribution in any caravan is essential. Although technology can slightly mitigate the effect of an uneven load, the age-old practice of ‘spreading the load evenly’ applies before making any trip. “We recommend loading the vehicle and caravan, and actually going to a weigh station at the dump and checking your total weight. If you’re over 6 tonnes then you should be getting a Class-2 driver’s licence,” says McWhirter.

towing drivers to overtake them, quite possibly without 100 metres of clear road ahead of them on straight sections, and even when approaching corners. Your vehicle will handle, steer, brake and react very differently when towing a caravan!

SWAY CONTROL (ESC SYSTEMS)

These are getting pretty advanced. The latest Jayco caravans have a Lippert version with Gyro-Plus in the calorimeter.

This applies minute adjustments to the brakes when the sensors are getting ‘out of square’, and instantly straightens you up. But again, there is no substitute for careful driving technique and expecting the unexpected on the road.

ACCIDENTS DO HAPPEN

Covi NZMCA Insurance Manager Ryan Lewis says they see a lot of claims from new caravan owners – especially damage done while reversing or moving at low speeds. He says drivers should take any additional precautions they can.

“We see so many accidents that involve caravans hitting static objects.

Often these situations are avoidable by

simply taking more time or care. If you are able to, then take the opportunity for somebody to get out of the vehicle and guide the driver,” Lewis says.

“These accidents often happen at home, at the end of a trip when people are tired, and often in a newer, unfamiliar vehicle.

“If an accident happens, the Covi team are just a phone call away. But of course, you want to do everything you can to minimise the possibility. Any claim will involve waiting for parts to arrive and waiting for the workshop to do the repairs, so it’s well worth your while taking that extra care.”

he ‘camping car’ concept has long been popular in Europe, and every big event there attracts large numbers of ordinary-looking vehicles that can also perform as mobile hotels. The Tour de France is a case in point. You’ll witness thousands of European cycling fans camping in these vans by the side of the road, waiting sometimes for days for the race to come along.

Usually, camping cars are products of their owners’ ingenuity. The starting point is often a compact car-based van, preferably with one or two sliding side doors and a tailgate, to which homemade beds and kitchen facilities 74 Motorhomes Caravans & Destinations

are added. The results are rudimentary, but provide cheap, short-term accommodation or a handy picnic station at the weekends.

Why don’t these folks simply buy a campervan or motorhome instead? A prime reason is cost. If you can’t afford a motorhome in Europe, you probably also can’t afford a permanent place to park it. The camping car can be left out on the street, parked adjacent to an apartment, which is where owners typically live.

The camping car is also the main vehicle for most owners, who need it for daily activities such as commuting, shopping trips and school runs. It must

therefore be easy to park, use fuel sparingly, and have family-capable seating and multi-role versatility. In short, these are the most practical motorhomes for those who only want to own one vehicle. They’ll perform like an ordinary station wagon for 300 days a year, and offer an acceptable compromise as touring accommodation on the other 56.

The vast majority of camping cars are conversions, the work done either by the owner or a small number of low-volume specialists. There hasn’t been much opportunity to buy one from the factory that made the rest of the vehicle until now. Enter the new Volkswagen Caddy California.

CADDY JOINS THE CALIFORNIA FAMILY

The California version of the Caddy compact van range is a natural progression for Volkswagen. For decades, it has produced the popular California, a medium-sized campervan based on the Transporter van that’s long been lauded for its attention to detail. That original California is something of a cult vehicle for the way it balances everyday usefulness with a decent serving of camping comfort, especially in Europe.

In 2020, Volkswagen took the larger Crafter van and created the Grand California. This eschewed some of the original Cali’s usability in return for a more luxurious camping experience, including, finally, a proper wetroom and toilet. Now, two years later Volkswagen has completed a trifecta. The Caddy California tips the balance even more in favour of daily use over touring comfort than the original California.

For those who think less is always more, your ultimate Volkswagen campervan is here. You certainly will pay quite a bit less.

The Caddy costs $65,500, compared to $147,000 for a California and $159,000 for the most affordable of two Grand California models.

VERSATILE PLATFORM

A Golf is essentially what you get when you buy a Caddy, whether it’s the California, the wheelchair-friendly Mobility version, or the hard-working, bare-bones Cargo. The popular Golf is now in its eighth generation and provides most of the hardware and software for this newly released, fifth generation of the Caddy.

The starting point is Volkswagen’s MQB platform, which is also the foundation for the Audi A3, Audi Q2 and Q3, Skoda Octavia, and many others in the VW Group family. It has high structural integrity, giving the steering and

suspension a solid mounting point. Doors close with vault-like precision in MQBequipped cars, the steering feels precise and responsive, and there’s a welcome reduction in wind and road noise when travelling at highway speeds.

SAFETY FEATURES

Following on from the Golf VIII means the Caddy V gets improved electric power steering with Active Lane Assist – one of no less than 18 safety systems in the latest generation. Other notables include Adaptive Cruise Control, which detects other vehicles ahead in the same lane and adjusts your speed accordingly. Front Assist detects pedestrians, other vehicles, and cyclists at speeds below 52kmh, and can automatically bring the Caddy to a complete stop. Missing from the test vehicle was any Blind Spot Monitoring system, an unusual omission from what is otherwise a comprehensive suite of safety aids.

An all-new 2L diesel engine drives the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG gearbox in the New Zealand version of the Caddy.

The DSG is a smooth and responsive shifter of ratios when used as an automatic, and the twin-clutch design ensures it is less wasteful of energy than a conventional automatic. Expect the smallest California to sip at a rate of around 6.5L per 100km when cruising, a considerable saving over its larger siblings.

The new Caddy isn’t just more caring of the environment when it comes to fuel use. There’s a new ‘twin dosing’ system for the Adblue emission control. Volkswagen says that this results in more precise urea injections that are optimised for a wide range of speeds, reducing toxic nitrous oxide emissions by 80 per cent.

Perhaps the Caddy’s greatest limitation in the campervan market is that you can’t turn the front seats around. So there’s no opportunity for front and rear seat occupants to face each other when parked up and the weather has taken a turn for the worse. Perhaps it’s best to think of the cost-saving at such times, and use some of those funds to book accommodation to wait out the storm.

GOOD FOR FINE DAYS

The Caddy is really only a fair-weather camper in its present form. Volkswagen NZ’s website mentions that included in the price is a large, free-standing tent that mounts on the raised tailgate, but Covid-19 supply constraints have paused production of the tent for now. It should be available in late 2022 however. The extra canvas room at the back could make

However, when the sun is shining the Caddy California can make the most of it. The raised tailgate can give shelter and shade, and the sliding doors on either side give adequate interior ventilation, along with the plastic slide vents that you can lock into the front windows.

COOKING OPTIONS

Also AWOL is the optional sliding kitchenette found at the rear on Euromarket Caddy California models. This consists of a pull-out metal drawer containing a single gas-hob and a chopping bench, while a lower drawer provides cutlery and pan storage.

Evidently New Zealand gas regulations wouldn’t allow the kitchenette to be offered here. However, a locally sourced kitchenette will be available as an optional extra.

Not that it matters, for there’s more storage room beneath the bed of the New Zealand edition. Kiwi owners can choose to bring their own camp cooker and electric chilly bin and still have plenty of room for luggage, especially if the rear seats have been removed and left back at home.

BED SET-UP

Erecting the folding double bed of the Caddy California is quick and easy, helped by the lightweight aluminum frame. Then you fold down the rear seats and slide the front seats as far forward as possible. The frame is then folded half out so that two struts can be pulled out, ready for slotting into the B-pillar of the Volkswagen. You then pull the front section of the bed forward so that those two struts reach their resting places.

The result is a sturdy, comfy place for two to sleep for the night, the foam mattress suspended on sprung plastic cups, as with the beds in other Californias. At 1970mm long and 1070mm wide, the bed can accommodate most couples.

SUMMARY

The Caddy California might be more of a car than a camper, but you can still get a

comfortable night’s sleep when parked up somewhere scenic and remote. For a tester who spent one teenage summer sleeping in the back of a former funeral hearse while touring New Zealand’s surfing breaks, and his wife, who once tucked herself up in a tiny Citroen 2CV van while roaming Europe, we felt that the Caddy was quite an upgrade on ‘camping car’ options.  Find out more at volkswagen.co.nz

The Lusso isn’t built for camping; it’s made for ‘glamping’

he new Coachman Lusso is the UK’s most expensive caravan, and the $NZ119,995 price here certainly raises expectations.

Fortunately, the Lusso delivers levels of luxury that more than match the price.

First impressions of the imposing front end, with its generous width and triple windows, are favourable. Then you spot the marble-effect graphics and chrome badges, and know you’re about to step into something special.

Yet even this doesn’t prepare you for the emotional lift when you see the interior.

This is a caravan that has its wow-phasers set to stun. It’s hard to remain indifferent to the obvious build quality, the spacious layout, all the bells and whistles, and decor that some high-ticket New York designer would be proud to call their own.

Coachman caravans have established quite a reputation thanks to consistently winning annual COTY awards, and are well known for their fastidious detailing – for example, the corners of the drawers are dove-tailed, and the runners are made of metal. The Lusso is arguably the best model from the best caravan-maker in the UK – with a price to match.

New Zealand’s exclusive Coachman dealers, Melissa and Craig Growden, were already aware of the brand and its reputation when the manufacturer asked whether they’d like to become their sole New Zealand dealer. The couple had built up their business, Gateway Caravans in Whakatāne, by refurbishing and selling second-hand caravans, using Craig’s skills as a builder. They began back in 2010 – “doing all the old Kiwi stuff”, according to Craig. Then they moved into importing second-hand caravans from the UK. “When we are sourcing second-hand caravans, we’d always tell our buyer in the UK to find us more Coachmans.”

Gateway Caravans moved to selling new caravans by becoming a Swift dealership.

That’s a franchise they still hold after adding Coachman in January 2020, giving them a wide range of new models to sell, alongside the second-hand range, from their high-profile site on the northern outskirts of Whakatāne.

The Lusso’s 2.44-metre width is near the maximum allowed for caravans on New Zealand roads, and is the key to all the interior space. The island double bed is oriented east–west, freeing up more of the

6265mm length for other purposes. If the bed were mounted longitudinally, the wraparound lounge at the front, the midships kitchen and rear washroom would not have been so wonderfully spacious.

TOWING AND PARKING UP

The overall length is 7.895 metres including the 1630mm drawbar – long enough to make even a Lexus LX450 tow vehicle appear a little puny for the task.

But have no fear, the unladen weight of the Lusso is 1800kg – well beneath the maximum towing capacities of most double-cab utilities, and no heavier than an average sized boat and trailer.

is a neat two tonnes when the 200kg payload is added.

Normally, a two-tonne trailer would put 200kg of downward pressure on the towbar of the vehicle, but the Lusso is designed to reduce this to 100kg, taking half the burden off the rear suspension of the tow vehicle and improving its performance. The Lusso is mounted on an AL-KO galvanised chassis equipped with automatic trailer control to prevent swaying. Stopping force is supplied

by AL-KO’s highly regarded AAA brake system. When parked up, two AL-KO wheel locks attached to four 14" alloy wheels guarantee security.

It all adds up to a caravan that’s easy to tow for its size, but the Lusso reserves what is perhaps its most impressive dynamic for when you reach your destination. It can self-level at the push of a button, thanks to the E&P stabiliser legs and hydraulic rams.

“You just press the remote, and by the time you get the deck chairs out and get the top off something refreshing, the caravan has levelled itself out,” says Craig.

The wrap-around seating looks big enough for an entire basketball team, and receives plenty of light through the windows on three sides and the large sunroof. The corner seats have higher back cushioning, making them as comfy as an armchair.

There’s plenty of lighting (my apologies for not turning it on for the interior photos), including gallery-like spotlights above the lounge and island bed. Also throughout are speakers for the Pioneer head unit above the front seating. This lounge is equipped to be Party Central should the need arise.

Just mind you don’t spill anyone’s drink when moving past the fixed table in the middle of the lounge. It has plenty of adjustability and you can quickly shift the top to allow more space to walk past it. It can also combine with the seating to make a spacious double bed.

You enter the Lusso through a single-piece side door with a window and internal rubbish bin, and walk past a shelf with aerial and power plugs for a TV. Above the door are the two control panels, a large one for lights and battery and tank monitoring, and a smaller one for the ALDE system that heats the water and the

If there’s a better caravan kitchen than this, I’ve yet to encounter it. The cooking facilities are the equal of many apartments and take full advantage of the generous width. There’s a handy, L-shaped bench area where the cook can chop away without getting in anyone’s way. Below the bench is an innovative

cupboard with dual-entry doors and a sliding rack that’s tailor-made to become an easy-access pantry.

A large Thetford cooker provides a gaspowered oven and separate grille. There are three hobs on top, the fourth position reserved for an electric hot-plate. Above the stove, extractor fan, and wide kitchen window is a Russell Hobbs microwave, which might be placed a little high for shorter cooks.

On the other side of the kitchen is a 177L Dometic fridge/freezer that can run on three energy sources. Nice touches include the way you can open the Dometic’s doors from either side, the salad compartment with separate temperature control, and the marble-effect splashboard behind the bench, sink and stove.

BEDROOM

A divider separates the main bedroom from the kitchen and lounge, and the spacious bathroom to the rear of the bedroom gives privacy for dressing. The island bed (1.88m x 1.37m) has a split mattress that you can move backwards when unused, to provide more walk space to the bathroom.

There’s a row of overhead lockers above the head of the bed, and although each appears the same size, they have different internals – some include shelves, others don’t – to suit diverse needs. Facing the bed is another TV shelf with ready to 83

plug in wiring. To the right of that is a huge double-entry wardrobe and a couple more drawers. There’s even more storage beneath the bed, which you can also access from the outside.

If you’re 1.88 metres tall or less you’re in luck, for that is not only the length of the island bed, but also the height of the large shower cubicle. This completes the full-width bathroom, which has a ceramic bowl swivel toilet, a heated towel rail, and separate sink unit with a C-shaped tap so you don’t have to bend over to wash your hands. The back of the shower is clad with the same marbled material as in the kitchen – another example of Coachman’s attention to detail.

THE FREEDOM PACKAGE

For another $7000, the Lusso can be tailored more towards freedom camping with a package: a bigger solar panel (190W plus factory 100W panel), full selfcontainment certification, and 120L tanks mounted permanently onboard, replacing the portable 36L fresh and greywater tanks. Also included are a 24” TV and an NZ-format automatic satellite dish.

SUMMARY

Many will opt for the freedom package to overcome the Lusso’s one limitation in this country – its reliance on campgrounds when left standard. Spending the extra completes what is arguably the most luxurious caravan on the market. Little wonder this Coachman flagship is sold out until 2022. urrently Jayco have three different campervans in their JRV range. All have similar layouts, the smallest being the RM 19-1 – based on a Renault Master, and the biggest an MS 22-2, based on a Mercedes Benz. In the middle is the vehicle being reviewed, the FD 19-1, which is based on a Fiat Ducato. It has a permanent bed across the back and a fourseat dinette at the front.

The RM 19-1 and the MS22-2 have club lounges that convert to a double bed at the back, and no forward dinette.

All models have a central kitchen, with the washroom opposite. Both layouts are popular and illustrate the point that no matter how big or small, humble or opulent a motorhome may be, they all require compromises on the part of the buyer.

DINING

Both cab seats rotate to face the dinette table so that four can dine together. The forward-facing seats are a good fit for youngsters, but a bit of a squeeze for two adults at the same time. Three adults dining at once would be easier, but either way there’s room for four pairs of knees under the table. Note that the cab seats and the dinette seats have seatbelts, even though there are only two beds available.

Alongside the table is an opening double-glazed window which includes a blind/insect screen.

The table detaches for stowing when the vehicle is underway. There is a step down from the cab to the rest of the interior, although I hardly noticed it in the halfday I spent conducting the review.

Above the table, where it’s easily seen and easy to get at, is the ‘instrument control centre’ cabinet, home for the J-Hub Tablet, Furrion 3300 entertainment centre (CD/ USB/Bluetooth) and the switchboard for the house battery, water pump and hot water system.

Planning, ingenuity and patience are necessary ingredients in any cookbook for this kitchen. Many of what are regarded as essential everyday appliances are present, but some are not. I can live without a dishwasher, and compensate for the lack of a coffee machine, but not having an oven requires adjustment.

However, what is available is presented very nicely. The 1500mm-long bench is a handy size, with 600mm of clear worktop beside the Dometic twin hobs and circular sink bowl. Bench top extensions

are available at both ends. A worthwhile refinement is the filtered freshwater tap alongside the regular tap. The filter is in the cupboard below, where it’s easy to replace.

Below the bench is a Vitrifrigo 2-way (12V/230V) 85L compressor style fridge/ freezer. It sits alongside three drawers and two cupboards, one of them very narrow but suitable for a tea towel rail. A cabinet above the hobs houses a microwave and extractor fan. There is no window behind the bench, but the sliding door with its own opening window is just next door, and there is a clear acrylic hatch above.

Add in the other three opening windows, one each end of the bed and one beside the dinette, and you have a variety of ventilation options. All the windows are double glazed, and those that open have blinds and insect screens.

INTERNAL STORAGE

BEDROOM

BATHROOM

A permanent fixture, the rear bed is a good width (1500mm), but at 1800mm long it won’t suit those who are over six feet tall. The mattress construction – foam top over a substantial spring system – is exceptionally comfortable.

Main access to the storage space below the bed is outside through the rear doors.

At the foot of the bed, beside the single overhead locker, is the primary prewired TV mounting point.

There are three overhead lockers, all above the double bed and all suitable for storing clothes and personal items.

The kitchen has storage in the fridge, the cupboards and drawers below the bench top, plus a small shelf above the microwave. It’s not a lot of space for storing the supermarket shopping so would require careful management.

In the cabinet above the dinette is a small cubby for odds and ends, and above the cab a large shelf will prove handy for storing items used when underway, like cameras, tablets and jackets.

There is more storage space under and behind the forward-facing dinette seats. Overall the storage is adequate considering the size of the base unit.

Not a lot to be said really. Moulded from acrylic sheet, the washroom unit contains a Thetford swivel bowl electric flush toilet on a small plinth, which keeps it clear of the separate shower tray. A corner handbasin has its own tap separate from the shower.

In the ceiling is a downlight and a ventilation hatch. That’s it. No medicine cabinet or vanity unit. And in the scheme of things, it does the job.

HEATING

Eberspacher diesel heaters are a standard feature of the FD 19-1’s NZ specification.

A house air-conditioning unit is an optional extra. Hot water is courtesy of a Truma 14L LPG/230V cylinder.

EXTERIOR

Towards the rear of the driver’s side is the Truma hot water system exhaust and a lockable freshwater inlet, the 230V inwards and outwards plugs, and a toilet cassette hatch. All are positioned around the rear wheel arch.

Up front is the house radio aerial.

Above the rear doors is a prominent stop light fixture that unobtrusively houses a rear-view camera. These rear doors open in the usual way, but because the rear bed is permanently fixed, they do not provide access to the interior.

Rear wheel mudflaps are part of the standard kit. Kerbside, the sliding door provides excellent access to the interior.

Considering its size and weight it is surprisingly easy to operate, and it latches securely in both the open and shut positions.

A separate interior handle releases the door from its open position. Up above, the 4-metre Fiamma awning provides kerbside protection from sun and rain, 89

just in front of the sliding door to the rear corner. An annexe light is mounted above the window, aft of the sliding door’s open position. Below is the hatch to a sealed compartment for a 4kg LPG bottle.

Fitting the optional black alloy wheels gives the FD-19 an edgy look, and painting the front bumper white to match the cab greatly improves the van’s appearance. It’s a good-looking unit.

CHASSIS

By fitting the ZF 9-speed automatic gearbox, Fiat have given the Ducato a new lease of life. The 110Kw/160HP 2.3L turbo-diesel motor moves off the mark in a most willing fashion, and it’s a joy to drive on both the motorway and on urban streets. Note, it does use AdBlue to achieve the current Euro 6d rating.

Standard cab features include a reversing camera with the monitor built into the dashboard, and window curtains.

DUTCH PEA & PORK HOCK CHOWDER WITH SMOKED CHEDDAR TOASTS

SERVES 6 “I’m bringing out my Dutch roots here! My mum used to make this soup for us when I was a little boy, and it was just the best thing. Her Dutch pea and ham soup was so thick that you could stand your soup spoon up in it! Amazing. This has to be one of the most affordable winter dinners you could put on the table, and it’s packed with flavour.” – Michael CHOWDER 1 smoked pork hock (300g approx.)

2 carrots, peeled and quartered 2 onions, peeled and quartered 2 bay leaves 2 litres vegetable stock 3 cups split green lentils SMOKED CHEDDAR TOAST 4 tbsp Dijon mustard 8 slices ciabatta or other crusty bread 1 cup grated smoked Cheddar

Place all the chowder ingredients in a large pot with a lid, or a slow cooker.

Bring the pot to the boil, reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 1½ hours. If using a slow cooker, set it on high until it starts to bubble, then turn to low to keep it simmering.

Remove the hock and set aside. In batches, place the rest of the soup in a blender or food processor and blitz until smooth.

Pick the meat from the ham hock, shred it roughly and add it to the soup.

For the smoked cheese toast, preheat the oven grill. Spread Dijon mustard over ciabatta slices, then top with grated smoked cheese. Place under the hot grill until cheese is golden and bubbling. Serve straight away with bowls of chowder.

LIME & COCONUT GRILLED CHICKEN WITH SUPER CHOP SUEY SERVES 4 “I’ve kept everything that’s quintessential about this Pacific staple – but I’ve replaced the usually high sodium levels with a variety of sauces that keep the flavour up and the salt down. This one is great for a picnic; a cold dish on a hot day.” – Ganesh 8 skinless, boneless chicken thighs vegetable oil 1 cup coconut milk 2 tbsp garlic powder 1 cup soy sauce

4 tbsp white vinegar 300g vermicelli noodles 1 onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 cups frozen mixed veg 2 cups chopped Asian greens salt ½ tsp white pepper 4 tbsp oyster sauce 1 tsp sesame oil 2 tbsp Chinese cooking wine 2 tsp cornflour 1 cup water ½ cup chopped spring onion 1–2 limes, sliced

Place chicken in a bowl and add a little oil along with coconut milk, garlic powder, ½ cup soy sauce and white vinegar. Leave to marinate for at least for 30 minutes, while you prepare the vegetables.

Get a grill hot! Grill the chicken, turning often, and get it to the point where it has just slightly burnt edges and is cooked through. Remove and set aside, covered, to rest.

Rehydrate the vermicelli noodles in boiling water for 5 minutes. Drain into

a colander and set it in a bowl of roomtemperature water to rest.

Heat a little oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add onion and garlic and fry, stirring regularly, till they go golden brown. Add mixed veg and Asian greens, season with a pinch of salt and the white pepper, and fry for 2 minutes over a high heat. Remove from the heat and set aside.

In a medium-sized pot, heat 1 teaspoon oil over a medium heat. Add the rest of the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil and Chinese cooking wine.

Simmer for 3 minutes.

Add vermicelli noodles to the sauce and mix well. Now add cooked vegetables to the sauce and mix well again. Add water if the sauce is too thick; you want a little gravy.

Dissolve the cornflour in 2 tablespooons of the water and add it to the mix. It will thicken the sauce. Check the seasoning again. If it needs a little more salt, add it.

Garnish the noodles with spring onion and serve with the chicken alongside and garnished with slices of lime.

MAKES 8 REGULAR-SIZED CUPCAKES “Pumpkin in cupcakes . . . what?! But trust me, if you like carrot cake then you will love these. They are moist and full of flavour. If you don’t tell the kids, they won’t even know about the vegetables they have just eaten. It’s win–win!” – Michael 1 tsp baking powder ¾ cup standard flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp baking soda ½ cup raw sugar 2 eggs ½ cup vegetable oil 2 cups grated pumpkin ½ cup chopped walnuts or hazelnuts 2 tbsp raisins 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds for decoration ICING juice of 1 lemon

1 tbsp butter, softened 100g cream cheese, softened 2 tbsp icing sugar

Preheat oven to 190°C. Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add eggs and oil and mix until just combined. Add grated pumpkin, nuts and raisins and fold in.

Divide mixture evenly between lightly greased cupcake moulds or muffin tins.

Bake for 20–25 minutes. Allow to cool in tin for 5 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely before icing.

For the icing, beat together lemon juice, butter and cream cheese. Add icing sugar and continue to beat until smooth. Ice tops of cooled cupcakes and decorate with pumpkin seeds.
