THE RAKE ANGLE The rake angle influences the cut quality, feed and cutting forces. It always correlates to the desired entry and exit angles to the workpiece.

Negative rake angle: ■ More difficult cutting process - higher cutting power required from machine ■ Cutting force in the direction of the workpiece support (crosscut saws) ■ Workpiece edge on the upper side better than on the underside THE CLEARANCE ANGLE If the clearance angle is too low, chip removal by the next tooth is not possible. A large clearance angle facilitates large chip removal. This is necessary for greater feeds. Small clearance angles allow only minimal chip removal with smaller feeds. This is selected when stable teeth are required.
ENTRY AND EXIT ANGLES ON THE WORKPIECE In most cases (and in particular for circular saws), the exit angle is unfavourable as opposed to the entry angle. For this reason the "good side" should be positioned upside down.

SAW BLADE PROJECTION With increasing saw blade projection, the quality on the exit side decreases. It does not however improve on the entry side, due to the lack of guidance effect. The ideal saw blade projection is between 8 and 10 mm.

Abrasive grain types are – Corundum (aluminium oxide) as a hard, slightly brittle grain for the processing of metal, wood and lacquers of rough as well as fine ground finishes. – Silicon carbide as a hard, sharp-edged abrasive grain for processing of lacquer, wood, ceramic, glass and rubber… for rough as well as fine ground finish. – Aluminium zircon as a tough and fine crystalline combination of aluminium oxide and aluminium zircon for the processing of metal and non-rusting materials. The bonding agent anchors the abrasive grain in the sanding compound carrier and supports it against the forces generated by the removal of the surface.
