For millions of individuals who are missing teeth, smiling is no easy task. The decision to get dental implants can prove to be life-changing. Dr. Natalie Wong, president of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), describes treating a shy 18-year-old man whose front teeth were knocked out in a bullying incident.

5 reasons dental implants will make you smile BPT

When the young man first came to her office, he wouldn't even look up or speak to her. Working slowly over many months, she earned his trust and replaced his missing teeth with dental implants. "The expression on his face when he smiled, looking at his final teeth, it was amazing," says Wong, who practices in Toronto and is the founder and director of the Toronto Implant Institute. "We change people's physical state all the time. But when you can change someone's mental state, that's something impactful." CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

5 reasons dental implants will make you smile If you've been hesitant or unwilling to smile as often as you would like because you're missing teeth - either from birth, as a result of injury, infection or decay - dental implants could be just what you need to start working those smile muscles a lot more. Here are five reasons dental implants will bring a smile to your face: 1. You'll look and feel great. Dental implants feel, look, fit and function like healthy, natural teeth. Whenever you smile, you'll know you look your best. They're comfortable so you don't have to think about them or care for them any differently than you do your natural teeth. You brush and floss them - no need to remove them for cleaning. 2. They're built to last. When properly cared for, dental implants can last decades. Many other tooth replacement options, including certain types of bridges and dentures, may need to be replaced as often as every five to 10 years, requiring a more significant investment of time and money. 3. You can live life with confidence. Dental implants don't slip or click when you talk, eat, laugh or kiss. You can enjoy everyday activities without worrying about your teeth. You'll also find your speech is more natural. You just won't have any excuses not to smile. 4. They protect facial bone and healthy teeth. Leaving empty spaces in your mouth after losing one or more teeth can lead to jawbone deterioration and other health issues. When dental implants are placed in your jawbone, they bond with your natural bone. They're the only tooth replacement option that stimulates bone growth and prevents bone loss, as well as keeps your facial structure intact. Another advantage is that they don't require grinding down adjacent teeth as is required to anchor bridges or attach partial dentures.

5. They're more affordable than you think. At first glance, dentures or removable bridges might seem like a better deal than dental implants, given their lower upfront costs. But the full financial and emotional cost of dentures or bridges can run much higher than dental implants when you factor in ongoing maintenance costs, the inconvenience and timeconsuming hassle of removing dentures for cleaning, and the need for frequent replacement. Add in health costs if your jawbone starts to deteriorate, and the social costs of simply not being confident about chewing, laughing, talking or living your life, and compare the costs again. Dental implant surgery is one of the safest, most predictable procedures in the dental field. But dental implants are complex, sophisticated devices that require deep knowledge and specialized expertise to fit and place properly, so it's important to choose a dental implant dentist with experience and knowledge you can trust. Be sure to ask about your dentist's training, specializations and credentials. You can also find plenty of additional helpful information on the consumer website at www.aaid-implant.org, including a Find an Implant Dentist tool to locate an AAID-credentialed dentist near you. Don't let missing teeth prevent you from getting all the physical and emotional benefits that come with exercising those smile muscles frequently and confidently.

It's here again - that time of year when everyone seems to unwittingly pass colds and other illnesses around. As every parent knows, kids can bring germs home from school and share them with the entire family, spreading illness at warp speed. In fact, 60 million school days are missed every year by children nationwide due to preventable illnesses like cold and flu. What can you do to fight the spread of illness and help keep your kids - and you healthier during cold and flu season this year? It's all about practicing healthy habits and making sure you have the right tools. Lysol's Here for Healthy Schools campaign is working with schools, educators and parents to help reinforce healthy practices and curb the spread of illnesses in the classroom. As part of the program, Here for Healthy Schools spokesperson, actress and parent Sarah Michelle Gellar shared five tips for keeping your kids healthy during cold and flu season, and beyond: 1. Model healthy habits

"Your children pay closer attention to smaller things than you'd expect," says Gellar. She advises modeling the habits you want your children to follow. Demonstrate how you use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze. And be sure that they see you washing your hands often, especially before eating a meal. Actions do speak louder than words, so practicing what you preach can go a long way to instilling these healthy habits in your kids. 2. Reinforce healthy habits with caregivers Gellar explains how important it is that caregivers and others who spend time with her children follow the same healthy habits she wants to teach her children.

"I truly rely on my village to help me," says Gellar. "This means my children interact with many different people within their day-to-day activities, and inevitably come in contact with even more germs." She makes sure everyone who spends time with her children understands the vital role these healthy habits play in helping to avoid preventable illnesses. 3. Involve kids in preparing healthy meals "Food is so important in our family," says Gellar. "Most of our fondest memories take place in the kitchen." By making her children part of the process of planning, preparing and serving meals, she stresses, they are constantly learning not only how to eat healthy, balanced meals, but also how to create one for themselves. 4. Get a flu shot Gellar insists that everyone in her household get a flu shot each year, at the beginning of flu season, to help her family stay flu-free throughout the year. This also helps prevent spreading the flu to anyone else who might be vulnerable. 5. Keep kids home when they're sick "While we want to limit the number of days out of school for children to ensure they're thriving and growing," Gellar explains, "it's important as parents to understand when to keep them home." Because colds, flu and other illnesses are easily spread, sending children to school when they're clearly under the weather will likely lead to more children in the classroom getting sick and missing school. Following these healthy habits will help keep everyone's sick days to a minimum this year, so children can learn, grow and thrive at school.

'COMMON CAUSES AND TREATMENTS FOR SENSITIVE TEETH PRESENTED BY BPT If you've ever noticed sharp pain in your teeth when enjoying ice cream or a cold or hot beverage, you probably experience some degree of tooth sensitivity. When the temperature gets colder outside, even just breathing in frosty air can trigger that pain. According to research, 1 in every 2 adult Americans suffers from some kind of tooth sensitivity. What are the most common causes of tooth sensitivity, and how can you help protect your teeth from discomfort? Gum recession There are several factors that can lead to gum recession - with one of the contributors being gingivitis. This can lead to gingival recession which, along with the loss of cementum, leads to exposure of dentin which leads to dental sensitivity. Products like Crest Gum and Sensitivity Toothpaste can also help treat gingivitis, which can ultimately lead to gum recession. Often when people experience tooth sensitivity they reduce or stop brushing their teeth regularly, which can just make the problem worse. Continue to practice good oral care and consult your dentist if pain around the gum line persists, since that could mean additional treatment for your gums is warranted.

Crest and Oral-B Smile Council member Kareen Wilson, RDH, says, "Even as a dental professional I have teeth sensitivity, so Crest Gum and Sensitivity is the product I use and recommend for fast and effective relief. Enamel wear The outer covering or shield of the tooth, known as enamel, can wear down over time as well as from acidic food and drinks. Weakened enamel and dentin can also mean exposing the microscopic tubules that lead to dental nerves, so that anything touching that area causes pain. Many people who experience tooth sensitivity find themselves avoiding foods and drinks that trigger their pain, like acidic citrus fruits and juices or ice cold soda and hot coffee. People shouldn't have to avoid their favorite foods and drinks in fear of the tooth sensitivity that can come with them. You can help to safeguard your teeth from sensitivity by using a product like new Crest Gum and Sensitivity Toothpaste, which wraps teeth in a shield of protection, blocking tubules to provide all day protection. Most people notice a difference within three days, with twice daily brushing, and are able to get back to enjoying their favorite treats - with reduced sensitivity pain. Tooth decay If you are experiencing tooth decay, or cavities, those areas can be overly sensitive. Sometimes the areas around old fillings can accumulate bacteria, which leads to further tooth problems and sensitivity. If tooth pain persists for more than a couple of days, especially when you are not eating or drinking hot or cold items, you should visit your dentist to be sure that you don't have a cavity that needs attention, or an old filling that might need to be replaced. Or you may even have a cracked tooth that needs to be seen by a dentist.

Dental procedures For anyone who has undergone a recent dental procedure, whether a simple filling, crown placement or something more involved like a root canal, your teeth may experience sensitivity for some time afterward. Ask your dentist what an expected time frame might be to expect sensitivity after a procedure, and what to watch for if that sensitivity doesn't go away. Persistent pain after a dental procedure could be a sign of infection. Tooth grinding Your dentist can examine your teeth for signs that you may be grinding them, as it can happen while you are asleep or otherwise unaware of what you're doing. A mouth guard or other strategy may help resolve this issue. Brushing too hard Sometimes using a hard-bristled brush, or simply using too much force while brushing, can contribute to worn enamel, making tooth sensitivity worse. It's best to continue to brush your teeth regularly, but consider using a softbristled toothbrush or electric toothbrush, and/or simply brush a little more gently. Your dentist may be able to recommend a better toothbrush for you to use. While there can be many causes for your tooth sensitivity, there's no reason you can't enjoy cold or hot foods and beverages without those twinges of pain. With proper oral care practices, you should be able to reduce or resolve tooth sensitivity for good. How to spot hearing loss and improve quality of life BPT

In today's hectic healthcare environment, new diagnoses, wellness trends and studies on conditions like cancer and heart attacks are popping up every day. This can be overwhelming and cause many to push standard health care, like hearing health, to the bottom of their to-do lists. As you gather with family over the holidays this year, it is the perfect time to learn more about hearing health and hearing loss, a condition faced by nearly 48 million Americans. It affects more people as they age, with 1 in 3 between the ages of 65 and 74 diagnosed with the condition. However, hearing loss can greatly impact younger people as well. Hearing loss is often gradual, which makes it harder for people to acknowledge that they are experiencing it. Despite symptoms, many wait an average of 7-10 years before seeking treatment, which can put them at risk for developing additional serious health conditions. "It's extremely important that people experiencing hearing loss are assessed and receive any treatment they may need. Hearing loss is linked to a range of issues, from depression and social isolation to cognitive decline and decreased balance," says Leslie Soiles, chief audiologist at Campaign for Better Hearing and HearingLife. "Additionally, people with severe, untreated hearing loss are five times more likely to develop dementia, so it's important to be assessed as soon as hearing loss symptoms appear."

Treating hearing loss can have a positive impact on a person's life - physically, mentally and socially. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you or a loved one might be experiencing hearing loss symptoms. Notice those around you As you begin to gather with friends and family you may not have seen for a while, you should watch for changes in their hearing - especially in loved ones over 60. If their hearing is getting worse, they may ask others to repeat themselves, seem frustrated or appear to misunderstand what others are saying. If your loved ones have had these symptoms for a long time or have advanced hearing loss, they may seem disengaged or removed from conversations, as it's too hard to distinguish voices from one another or follow conversation threads. Say something If you notice these changes in a friend or family member, find a way to gently broach the topic and suggest they have their hearing assessed. You can also offer to accompany them to their appointment if they'd like - hearing health centers like HearingLife encourage family and friends be a part of the assessment, as assessing a person's hearing with a familiar voice can provide more accurate results. Be honest about your own hearing If someone tells you they're concerned about your hearing, or if you yourself notice you're having trouble making out conversation in restaurants or social groups, acknowledge that you could be experiencing hearing loss. If you're hesitant to have your hearing assessed, think of the positive changes improved hearing could bring, like hearing your grandchildren speak at family dinners or going to the movies and understanding the dialogue. Know that early treatment makes a difference Treating hearing loss early can help people maintain relationships and be fully engaged in daily activities. It is recommended that anyone over the age of 60 have an annual hearing assessment to detect problems before they affect quality of life. HearingLife offers complimentary hearing assessments at over 500 hearing health centers around the country. There, hearing health providers can assess your hearing and discuss treatment options, like hearing aids, with those who need them. Visit hearinglife.com to learn more or schedule an assessment.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE FOR A HEALTHIER HEART

19

BPT

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women,i and the total numbers of deaths from heart disease are rising.ii Cardiovascular risk tends to accumulate over time - the roots of which can often be traced to lifestyle choices made in early adulthood.iii You can help change this trend by prioritizing and role modeling healthy behaviors for yourself and the people around you, including your family and friends. It is important for adults to have an active lifestyle. The American Heart Association recommends being physically active every day.iv However, even if you're inactive now, you should start out slow - even a few minutes at a time may offer some health benefits. Exercise not only helps control weight, but also strengthens the bones and heart.v Consider including your family or friends in your physical activities. Please check with your doctor before starting or changing any exercise regimen.

Another critical lifestyle habit is healthy eating. As adults, a healthy diet is one of the best weapons you have to fight heart disease. The food you eat, as well as the amount, can affect other risk factors like cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes and overweight.iv Consider choosing nutrient-rich foods and limiting intake of sweets and sugar-sweetened beverages.iv The people you see regularly as well as those you share a meal with will notice your decisions for healthy eating and they may choose to join you with their food selections. While physical activity and nutrition can dramatically impact heart health in the long term,v sometimes diet and exercise are just not enough. You may need to take medication, especially if you have a family history of heart disease or if accumulated risk factors become pronounced. It's critical that your family members see you doing the right thing, like, for example, adhering to a treatment regimen recommended by your doctor.vi And, if your cholesterol and/or triglyceride levels are elevated above normal levels, get the facts and be proactive in addressing these concerns with your doctor.vii When you live a healthy life, you may enjoy the benefits of a healthier heart. What's more, when your friends and family see you prioritizing things like eating well and exercising, or taking medication if you need to, they are more likely to do so as well. Being heart smart is important for everyone. You can take the lead and be a living example of a heart-healthy lifestyle. Start today and look forward to a healthier tomorrow for the people you care about.

STAY HEALTHY DURING THE HOLIDAYS BPT Holiday travel, endless parties and hours waiting in long shopping lines can take a toll on your health. As the season ramps up, it's a great time to take some steps to support your immune system for extra protection. These common-sense health tips can go a long way toward keeping yourself healthy this holiday season. Wash (and watch) your hands Something as simple as hand-washing is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of germs. Hands - especially when they are used to muffle a sneeze or a cough - can spread germs to people and things. A good wash requires at least twenty seconds of vigorous rubbing, using soap and warm water. If you can't get to a sink, a backup is hand sanitizer with alcohol in it. It's also best to keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth. Emphasize healthy habits Drink plenty of water and get your sleep and exercise. Studies show that all of these activities help prevent our bodies from getting run down. And when you're run down, you are more susceptible to illness. Make time to: * Stay hydrated by drinking six to eight glasses of fluid - preferably water daily. * Getting enough sleep is crucial to a healthy body and immune system. For most adults, eight hours of sleep is considered the norm. You'll need all the rest you can get in between ugly sweater parties. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

* Exercise regularly. Pop into that new spin studio, stream a yoga workout from your living room or take a brisk walk. Research shows a link between moderate, regular exercise and a strong immune system. Add supplements to your routine For an extra level of protection year-round, supplement your diet with a personalized vitamin regimen. "Most people don't eat right 100 percent of the time, which makes it hard to get the nutrition they need. Supplementation can help you fill those nutrient gaps," said Kerry Grann, principal research scientist, Amway Research & Development. Nutrilite developed individual MyPack supplement packets to provide the optimal blend of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. They offer a personalized, simple and convenient experience to help you fill nutrient gaps with men's and women's packs or address specific needs, such as immunity, focus and energy. The Immunity Pack is especially helpful this time of year. Use these tips to help you stay healthy this season so you can enjoy the holidays - and try making it a New Year's resolution to keep these healthy habits all year.

VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS LOSE SLEEP TO BINGE-WATCH TV CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

A new survey from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) found that 88% of U.S. adults admitted to losing sleep due to staying up late to watch multiple episodes of a TV show or streaming series - and this number jumps to 95% when looking at 18- to 44-year-olds. The same survey shows that Americans rank sleep as their second most important priority, following family. But actions speak louder than words, and it's not just TV shows that are taking precedence over sleep. Two-thirds of adults have lost sleep due to reading, 75% of men have lost sleep watching sporting events, and 72% of those aged 18-34 have put video games ahead of bedtime. "Choosing to binge on entertainment at night instead of sleeping has serious ramifications," said AASM President Dr. Kelly A. Carden. "Sleep is essential to health, well-being and safety, and chronic insufficient sleep can lead to an increased risk of health problems, mood disorders and motor vehicle accidents." Here are a few tips to help binge-watch responsibly: Set an episode limit. Commit to a specific number of episodes at the beginning of your watching session. To decide how many episodes you can fit in, determine your bedtime. The AASM recommends adults get seven or more hours of sleep for optimal health. Use this bedtime calculator to find out when you need to go to bed based on your wake time. Get out of the "auto-play" loop. Many streaming services will automatically launch episodes one after another to ensure you keep watching. This makes it easy to think "OK, one more episode," leading to late nights and sleepy mornings. Check settings to turn off the "auto-play" and ensure you are consciously choosing when to continue watching, and when to power off for bed.

Make time on the weekend. If you enjoy streaming for longer periods, set aside part of your weekend to catch up on your favorite shows. Reserving Saturday or Sunday afternoon will provide more time for getting immersed in your shows, while still providing adequate time for sleep. Filter out blue light at night. If you stream content on a cell phone or tablet, make sure you have altered the device's blue light setting to minimize the alerting effects of screens at night. Bright light, such as that from a mobile device, sends signals to your brain that indicate you should be awake. This can make it difficult to fall asleep. Adjust your screen's brightness in the evening and avoid any electronics at least 30 minutes before bedtime. Avoid using devices in bed. Streaming from the comfort of bed can also impede your ability to fall asleep. It's best to keep electronics out of the bed so that you associate your bed with sleep when you lay down at night. If you are experiencing ongoing sleep problems, talk to your medical provider, who may direct you to the sleep team at an accredited sleep center for help. For more information and to find a local accredited sleep center, visit www.sleepeducation.org.

Your voice can make a difference for Rett syndrome BPT

Imagine having a healthy pregnancy, a normal birth and a beautiful baby girl who is growing wonderfully. However, at some point between 6 to 24 months, you notice that she begins to miss developmental milestones. You visit with your pediatrician, who may counsel patience, as children often develop differently and not always at the same pace. But, eventually, you realize your daughter is indeed losing key abilities she previously had. After consulting with your doctor, you're sent to see a neurologist, who gives your daughter a special genetic test and eventually makes the devastating diagnosis that your child has Rett syndrome and that she will never walk or talk again. And because so very few health care professionals even see or treat this incredibly rare disease, you'll likely become more of an expert on your daughter's care than most of the doctors you'll ever deal with. "When we heard the neurologist speak the words 'Rett syndrome,' it was like a death sentence," said Tim Frank, a former music industry executive in Nashville whose daughter Ella was diagnosed in 2012 after noticeably regressing in her development. "Our hopes and dreams for our daughter, and our family, shattered to the ground at that moment," said Tim. "And we were overwhelmed by the idea that we'd eventually know more than the medical professionals around us about a disease we'd never even heard of before." CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

What is Rett syndrome? As Tim learned, Rett syndrome is a rare genetic neurological disorder that is not hereditary and overwhelmingly impacts very young girls. Rett syndrome occurs worldwide in one of every 10,000 female births, according to Rettsyndrome.org, and is even more rare in boys. There is no cure. Disabilities initially can be mild to severe but will eventually impact every aspect of a child's life, including walking, speaking, eating, going to the bathroom and even breathing. The need for 24-hour care puts incredible responsibility and strain on caregivers, and takes a mental, physical and financial toll. Tim has altered his entire life to care for Ella. Now living in Florida and working full time for Rettsyndrome.org as director of marketing and communications, Tim has had Ella on a waiting list for a Medicaid waiver for over five years. "If she had a more common and prevalent condition such as autism or mental retardation, she would automatically be placed on the list for a Medicaid waiver and get more support and services," he said, emphasizing that policy changes and resources are needed at the local, state and national level to help families with rare diseases such as Rett syndrome. A groundbreaking international research survey to help Rett syndrome families Under the banner of The VOICES of Rett, one pioneering effort to help those with Rett syndrome and call attention to the critical need for research and resources for this debilitating disorder is the International Rett syndrome Burden of Illness Survey. This is the largest survey of its type and is being conducted to gather data physical, emotional and financial challenges of Rett syndrome on patients, families, caregivers and the entire Rett patient community. The results will and guide therapies, and help improve intervention programs and services to help Rett syndrome families.

"The Rett Burden of Illness Survey is incredibly important to speak to the research community, to speak to government, to tell the story of how this disability impacts the child's life and then ripples over into the family's life and ripples into affecting the entire community that the individual is in," said Paige Nues, mother of Katie, who has Rett syndrome. "The symptoms of Rett syndrome are often overwhelming for patients, families and caregivers," said Melissa Kennedy, executive director of Rettsyndrome.org. "Individuals with Rett syndrome have very different physical challenges and needs from other illnesses. Today, there are few resources available for Rett patients and their families. Each family is left to carve their own way to find the resources they need to care for their loved one."

"That is why this survey is vitally needed," said Kennedy. "It will help provide a sound understanding of the impact of Rett syndrome on patients and their caregivers. It's a valuable opportunity for the global Rett community to make their voices heard by those influencing the development, use and funding of treatment." Take action today Families of those with Rett syndrome often feel isolated, facing the daunting task of learning about a rare disease while also watching their loved one struggle with regression and severe medical hurdles. It's time to be heard. Walking in Your Season

A Journey Toward Excellence, by Sondra Wilkerson As the year 2020 approaches, you may find yourself reflecting on your past, planning for your future, or perhaps starting something new. Perhaps you are thinking of starting your own business or something just as challenging.

As a person who has been self employed for over 25 years, I find it both rewarding and liberating. I will say however, it does cost to be the boss and even though the cost of this kind of freedom is often steep, freedom at any cost is worth it.

Typically, when asked for advice regarding successful entrepreneurship, I simply state, “opportunity and success favor the prepared”.

If planning for success in business, it is of upmost importance that you be organized and prepared.

Numerous times I have witnessed a person with great skill and ambition fail to succeed at the level they desire, due to their own lack of organization and preparedness.

I have also seen people with little skill, accomplish tasks they were not professionally trained to handle because they took time to get prepared and organized.

Often we are our own worst enemy. Some hardships and challenges we encounter are hand crafted by us. We have become a nation, if not a global society of “slackers”, searching for the easy way out, the shortcut.

I say, do all it takes to ensure the best outcome for you. Be your own motivation; after all, you are worth it and you are the direct beneficiary.

Compiled here are some practical things that can be done to assist you with organization and preparedness.

1. Read. Reading is a great way to gather useful information. We often miss things due to our unwillingness to read.

2. Set an agenda, plan your schedule, and make to-do lists. These tools are good for accountability, they help you stay on task. You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish when you plan your time wisely.

3. Be sure to schedule breaks for rest. Sleep, food, and exercise are great ways to restore and rest is essential for optimal functioning.

You will find, as a result of being prepared and organized, you can face life’s many obstacles and challenges head on and walk into your newness with all confidence. So, go ahead and succeed, you’ve got this!

Bill Huston is an Urban Development Consultant that is working to build inner-city economies that work for everyone and provide opportunities for every resident to participate, thrive, and build wealth. To do this, he: • Designs and implement community capital offerings • Help clients raise capital from their own communities in alignment with their values and goals. • Work in collaboration with wealthy investors, government entities, corporate and philanthropic foundations to create impact investment funds Bill founded Our Crowd Rocks Consulting to upend the traditional models for raising capital that has left out vast, untapped numbers of low-moderate income Black inner-city residents who want to invest in the businesses and organizations that provide real value to their communities. Our Crowd Rocks is leading a movement that is bringing new capital — by directly engaging the average person in the Black community as investors, real estate developers, and entrepreneurs — to the new crowd economy — an economy that is open, democratized, resilient, just, and sustainable. This movement of “crowd capitalists” is questioning the old paradigms and bringing new models to the table that expand the capital aggregation options for nonprofits and social enterprises that are more democratic and values-driven. These models allow all stakeholders to benefit as ventures thrive. Bill was named one of the Top 19 Global Crowdfunding Experts by Inc. Magazine in 2014, featured on the Marketing and PR panel at the 2017 Crowd Invest Summit.

Introduction Crowdfunding is the collective effort of many individuals who network and pool small amounts of capital to finance a new or existing business venture. Each campaign is set for a goal amount of money and a fixed timeframe, each day is counted down and the money raised will be tallied up for visitors to follow its success. The number of crowdfunding platforms worldwide is on the increase and the largest markets are North America and Asia. The change of financial climate following the 2008 financial crisis has given rise to the culture of crowdfunding. The stringent post-recession lending policies perused by banks and the resulting difficulties experienced by small businesses to get credit have compelled people to seek means of alternative lending as a way of sidestepping bank loans. The amount of money raised per crowdfunding campaign worldwide grows from year to year. The Rise of Crowdfunding The rise of crowdfunding has led several countries to seek to regulate the industry for consumer protection reasons. For instance, the United States introduced new rules to govern equity crowdfunding, which came into effect on May 16, 2016. These rules regulate how so-called “regulation crowdfunding campaigns” may operate, but haven't prevented large funds being raised by campaigns. The following crowdfunding statistics will help illustrate the terrain that comes with what many refer to as the “democratization” of fundraising. Indeed, crowdfunding is one of the most accessible, successful ways of raising money for a project. Campaign owners don’t have to undergo a credit check or pitch to a panel of venture capitalists—and some can earn upwards or millions of debt-free funding. A successful crowdfunding campaign doesn’t just materialize out of thin air. Reaching a crowdfunding goal will require careful strategizing. And successful crowdfunding campaigns will often, ironically enough, require financial investment, as well. But, if you do it right, the efforts that a crowdfunding campaign requires will more than be worth it. Crowdfunding is a massive industry—and its scope is constantly expanding. As a result, there are lots of crowdfunding statistics to consider, each of which tell us a valuable story about running a successful campaign. Here are a few crowdfunding statistics to consider while we as the Black business community, decide how we are going to come together and do business with each other or become extinct. I know that this is a very harsh view of our current situation, but it is a sober prospective.

The impact of Crowdfunding According to Statista, crowdfunding raises $17.2 billion on a yearly basis in North America alone. And this number is growing steadily—projections for the crowdfunding market suggest that it will reach astronomical heights within the next few years. In fact, Statista projects a compound annual growth rate of 14.7% for the next four years. Crowdfunding has been growing at a steady pace. Statista found that the total amount of funds raised through crowdfunding campaigns grew by 33.7% last year. The total revenues acquired through the crowdfunding process is projected to reach $300 billion by 2030. And according to Business Wire, this growth is supposed to bring in an incremental $89.72 billion by 2022. Statista projects that the number of crowdfunding campaigns will reach 12,063,870 by 2023. That’s almost double the number of crowdfunding campaigns that ran last year. Crowd Investing Regulation Crowdfunding, the law that ushered in mainstream crowdinvesting is in full effect and not being used by the Black owned business community. Regulation Crowdfunding, the centerpiece of the 2012 JOBS Act also known as Title III, allows small businesses and startups to raise up to $1.07 million from everyday investors. Before the JOBS Act, such investment was generally limited to wealthy “angel” investors, with a few exceptions. Since the law went into effect on May 16, 2016, 1,688 separate investment crowdfunding campaigns have been launched—with 778 of those taking place in the last 12 months. More than 243,000 individual investors have been moved to invest close to $230 million into these ventures, according to Crowdfund Capital Advisors (CCA). By comparison, there are roughly 300,000 active angel investors in the U.S. The actual amount invested is less, as only campaigns that successfully reach their minimum funding target receive the funds. Roughly 60% of investment crowdfunding campaigns are successful. The average amount raised by a business via Regulation Crowdfunding to date is $221,000, slightly down from last year’s average of $246,000. California leads in activity, both in number of deals and amount raised, followed by New York, Texas, Florida and Colorado. All but three states—North Dakota, Kansas and Nebraska—had Reg CF offerings. CCA estimates the Reg CF has supported more than 9,000 jobs to date. The OLA App

the OLA App provides a seamless access point for Black Businesses to advertise and engage the Black consumer. Blacks are one of the largest consumer groups ($1.3 Trillion Annually) in the United States, but there are not enough Black businesses to service their needs. The OLA App will be the first step in filling this void and by providing a seamless platform for Black-owned businesses to engage the Black business-to-business market and also the Black consumer market that will help the OLA App dominate the urban market.

According to the National Black Chamber of Commerce, there are 2.6 million Black-owned businesses in the United States. Black businesses account for over $138 billion in revenue each year according to the US Bureau of the Census. The National Black Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to economically empowering and sustaining African American communities through entrepreneurship and capitalistic activity within the United States. The Black community spends only 2 percent of its purchasing power with Black businesses and according to the National Black Chamber of Commerce, we as a community, would increase that figure 5 percent to 7 percent, then the 2 million businesses that have no employees could each hire 1 additional employee resulting in 2 million new jobs in the community.

Black Social Media

Black consumers are speaking directly to brands in unprecedented ways and achieving headline-making results. Throughout 2017, popular brands witnessed the power of Black Twitter and the brand impact of socially conscious Black consumers. Through social media, Black consumers have brokered a seat at the table and are demanding that brands and marketers speak to them in ways that resonate culturally and experientially—if these brands want their business. And with African Americans spending $1.3 trillion annually, brands have a lot to lose. There are over 8 thousand Black owned business groups listed and active on Facebook with a total reach of over 7 million people. If each of theses groups could use crowdfunding, investment clubs and crowdinvesting there would be millions of investable dollars to grow Black owned businesses and provide a path to wealth building to the Black community.

Invest Black, Buy Black, Build Black Wealth I have been listening to the buy Black message for decades and there has not been much movement in that area of the economy. There are a lot of reasons for this behavior that is outside the scope of this article, but crowdfunding has added a new variable to this age-old economic equation. If community residents are provided the information and opportunity to invest in local businesses, then it makes sense for them to invest in these businesses and with a financial interest in the business’ success they will shop in these businesses and promote these businesses. Takeaway The introduction of crowdfunding and crowd investing in its many forms provides a pathway for Black owned businesses to access capital for business startup and growth by engaging their customers as investors that will have a financial interest in the success of these community businesses. These businesses that are properly capitalized will be able to provide better service, hire more people, and provide wealth building opportunities for community members/investors. Being able to leverage the fact the as Black business owners and Black Professionals we are already segmented into our crowds we need only become more familiar with crowdfunding in its many forms and use it to build Black owned businesses and wealth for community residents. This is my hope for 2020 in my community!!

Another year has come and gone but a new year can evoke new and exciting adventures to add to your journey. Make your story as creative, bold, colorful, and successful as you choose for it to be. Sometimes life can require more of you than what you may be willing to give. Circumstances pushes you to be your best and if you allow the push, you will get so much more than you ever imagined. Often times life reminds me of one big movie. There are so many moving parts that it can be hard to keep up with sometimes. Pay attention to your own story and become a box office hit. There are 5 elements of a story that can easily apply to everyday life.

1. CHARACTER The characters are the individuals that play a part in your story. Hopefully, you are the main character of your own story. You are in control of how many characters and what type of characters you allow to be a part of your story. The other characters are important because it allows you as the author to supply additional details, explanations, or actions as you approach the next elements. 2. SETTING The setting is the location of the action. Not only do you get to describe your environment or surroundings, but you create it. This is where a visual comes in play. What you see and do or who you surround yourself with can easily become a part of your everyday setting. There are unusual settings may appear that you as the author can’t always foresee; just hang in there, adjust your settings, and make it fit your needs or recreate it. 3. PLOT The plot is the entire story for which your life is based. Sometimes this plot thickens and most of the times it changes. Our plots are full of expositions such as, suspense, horror, mystery, or comedy, but most of all the plot can become very clear to you as an author but you can change it as often as you need to. Keep in mind that everyone doesn’t have to understand or make sense of your life’s plot.

4. CONFLICT Everyone has a conflict in their lives to solve. Sometimes the conflict is not solvable. A lot of the times we just have to plow through and hope for the best. There are instances where the conflict is necessary. Conflict will test your patience, ability, and endurance. Our story’s most exciting, scary, or beautiful moments happen at the climax right before the resolution. If there is something that you don’t like then fix it, solve it, or strive to make it better. 5. RESOLUTION This involves the way in which the action is resolved. We are often faced with many situations or conflicts that require action. Life is our stage and we are in charge of our script. Don’t feel the need to stay in your story or someone else’s story if it is going to cause more harm than good. The newness and promises that the year 2020 has to offer is all up to you. Rewrite your story as often as you need to or until it makes sense for you. Even though we are characters in this story called LIFE, every character that has been placed in your story, doesn’t have to stay there and may only be three for a season. Your settings are important and the plot may not always stay the same. Conflict will arise and it is up to you to resolve it. Lastly, be sure to have a resolution for yourself. Feel free to write off characters, settings, or plots that add no value to your life. Always remember that it’s your story! Korea L. 5 WAYS YOU CAN BE READY WHEN DISASTER STRIKES BPT

When North Carolina native and licensed practical nurse Shannon Lanier found herself caught in Hurricane Florence, more than two feet of rain arrived in her hometown of Wilmington. Lanier had listened to all the warnings and knew this had the potential to be a big one. But she'd never evacuated before. Her plan was to wait out the hurricane in her 30-year-old house at the end of a cul-de-sac near the Cape Fear River. A few hours after Florence made landfall, rising water levels forced Lanier, her roommate and their 140-pound Great Dane to seek shelter on their home's second floor. Through Facebook, Lanier discovered that the United Cajun Navy was rescuing people in her neighborhood. She used the flashlight on her phone to signal for help and waded through four feet of water on her home's first floor to reach the boat. Volunteers assisted the trio into a boat and began paddling against the current up the street. As they did, the boat capsized, forcing everyone to swim to safety with only one lifejacket available. They were fortunate to make it out of the water and were then transported to an evacuation shelter.

"All we had were the clothes on our backs," Lanier said. "The shelter was packed and supplies were dwindling. We were so grateful to even be given a few paper towels to use to dry off." Lanier has worked for DaVita Sedc Wilmington Dialysis Center for 18 years. Her patients with chronic kidney disease require life-sustaining dialysis treatment three times per week for four hours a day. Lanier considers them family. "After Florence, my heart hurt because I knew I couldn't be there for my patients," Lanier said. "I was always the one who would jump in to help find patients and make sure they could receive dialysis somewhere after a storm. But I wasn't able to do that this time." Instead, hundreds of her teammates stepped in to help. They waded through thigh-high waters to guide patients to safety and treatment. They trucked in fuel, stationed generators where power had been lost and set up a dedicated support line to connect Lanier and others to resources. One-time donations were also given to teammates in need who were impacted by Florence. Six months after the hurricane, Lanier finally returned to her home. "I wouldn't have made it through this without DaVita," Lanier said. "Churches, shelters, everyone was there for me. When things like this happen, people come together. The power in this story is how everyone came through for me. I knew I wasn't alone." When a disaster strikes, it's important to have a plan in place. Here are some items to consider when creating a disaster plan: 1. Make sure all insurance policies are up to date. 2. Know the evacuation routes out of your city. Be sure to note all types of emergency alerts and warnings in advance. 3. Identify an emergency point of contact. Consolidate emergency phone numbers for doctors and medical centers. 4. Develop a list of medicines and dosage amounts. If an emergency occurs, you'll want to have at least three days' worth of any medications on hand. 5. Put together a basic home emergency kit with enough water and food for each person for at least three days, paper and plastic ware, a manual can and bottle opener, first aid supplies, a flashlight and a battery-powered radio. Store the kit in a place that's easily accessible and waterproof. As hurricane season continues, look for more preparedness tips at ready.gov. Feeling disconnected from members of your own family lately? You're not alone - a 2018 study by 72 Point for Visit Anaheim found that 60% of parents with kids between 4 and 18 described their daily lives as "hectic." Sadly, the survey also found that today's families only spend about 37 minutes of quality time together per weekday. Between digital distractions and our often over-scheduled lives, even sitting down for dinner together can feel like a miracle to pull off, especially as children head toward the tween and teen years. What's a solution? Gather around the table. Set aside the gadgets and gather around the table together for a good old-fashioned family game night. Even if you start out with a monthly game night with the kids, chances are it will soon be popular enough to enjoy more often. Putting your family's game night on the calendar will ensure everyone keeps their schedules clear for a night of fun - and connection - all together. Today's games provide a huge range of choices to suit any age range, interests or gaming styles, so there's truly something for every family to explore and enjoy together. The added benefits will astound you: Kids can learn important lessons about sportsmanship and fair play, develop communication and collaboration skills, increase their fine motor, logic and strategic thinking abilities - and have a blast doing it. When was the last time you all just let loose and enjoyed laughing and being silly together? There's no better way for kids and parents to relax and have fun together than a game that brings out the best in everyone. Here are some examples of how games can boost specific skills, while also providing plenty of giggles and excitement. Test your knowledge, quick thinking and creativity

The winter months, which are often considered some of the busiest for animal shelters, are approaching. According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters every year. Adding a shelter pet to your family can be fulfilling, but what if you're not ready or able to adopt? Hartz Loving Paws is committed to supporting companion animals in shelters through product donations and volunteer events. Hartz is partnering with the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area in Texas to share opportunities for you to give back to pets in need if you're not ready or able to adopt. 1. Donate money or product. Many animal shelters and rescue organizations have direct donation links posted on their websites. Monetary donations go toward pet food, medical attention and vaccines for the animals. Animal shelters and rescue organizations also often create Amazon wish lists with desired products. Shelters typically ask for pet treats, toys and grooming supplies. Sarah Hammond, executive director of the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area in Texas, said she is grateful for donations from Hartz Loving Paws, which has given more than $2 million worth of product to shelters and organizations, including her own, since its inception in 2016. 2. Provide a temporary home. An increased number of animals placed in shelters need foster care before they are ready to find their forever homes. Foster needs range from post-op surgical care to puppy growth care and medical support. Food, medication and other supplies are typically provided when fostering, and the length of time a foster pet may stay in your home varies depending on the animal's needs. Contact your local shelter to fill out an application. Once approved, your local shelter will work closely with you to find the right foster pet for your household. 3. Volunteer at your local shelter or rescue organization.

Animal shelters and rescue organizations offer numerous volunteer roles, such as dog walkers, adoption support and training support. Many positions don't require prior experience and can be applied for on your local shelter or rescue organization's website. Volunteer positions vary in expectations and demand, so there is a position for everyone. You can also volunteer to participate in a shelter rebuild project. Hartz Loving Paws renovates shelters twice a year in partnership with GreaterGood.org's Rescue Rebuild program. These teams work with shelters to create playful and welcoming environments for animals. 4. Take photos of adoptable pets. Help animals find homes sooner by taking adoption photos for local shelters. Many people search for adoptable pets online, and with a great profile picture, animals have a greater chance at being adopted. If you're new to photography, there are free training videos available on the One Picture Saves a Life website that show how to take better photos of shelter pets. 5. Become an advocate. Follow animal shelters and rescue organizations on social media and reshare their content. Talk to your family and friends about the importance of caring for shelter pets while they await their forever homes and share how they can help.

THE POWER OF POSITIVITY: SIMPLE TIPS TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE PRESENTED BY BPT

If yWork demands paired with family demands make modern life extremely busy. Meetings, deadlines, housework, kids' homework, practice and much more all vie for your time. "Positive individuals are three times more creative, 31% more productive, and 23% less fatigued," says Amy Blankson, CEO of Fearless Positivity and author of "The Future of Happiness." "No matter where your baseline for happiness is today, you can always increase your overall happiness level." Blankson offers some insight into simple ways you can inject positivity into your day: Set intentions early Take a moment to shift your focus in the morning. What do you want to get out of your day? It's so easy to fall prey to the tyranny of urgency. Hold the emails, texts, calls and messages and spend just 2 minutes grounding yourself in a positive practice like meditating or journaling. You'll set yourself up for greater happiness in the long run. Get creative If you feel like you don't have the time or discipline to keep a gratitude journal, try looking for a "gratitude trigger." For instance, every time you stop at a red light, say one thing you are grateful for. This habit is great to pass time on commutes and is also a good practice to share with your children when they are in the car with you. Think to the future Try saying "future-forward gratitudes" in the morning. These are the things you are excited about for the day ahead, such as a meeting, lunch or special project. This practice helps prime you for positivity during the day and gives you an anchor point for reflection at the end of the day. Connect remotely While more people are working from home, 45% of them consider themselves a positive person versus 75% of people who work in the office, according to the survey. One way to stay connected and spread positivity with coworkers when you're not in the office is by taking a few minutes each day to text, email or call a coworker to thank them for something they did.

Move beyond off days Don't get hung up when you have a negative day. The most important part of creating a new habit is having the courage to restart when you have an off day. Happiness is not a state of mind; it's a mindset that develops over time. The best way to elevate your mindset is by training your brain to look for positive information in the world around you that you might have missed. Pay it forward Individuals who pay it forward through praise and recognition express that they have greater feelings of happiness, satisfaction and relatedness. However, even more importantly, both givers and receivers inspire others to want to give, which creates a powerful network effect. Positivity sweepstakes Nearly seven in 10 people agree they have a co-worker that is very positive and helps them get through the workday, and almost 75% said they often receive appreciation from their coworkers, according to the survey. If you have someone who is always brightening your day, you can show gratitude by nominating them for a chance to win some great prizes. Here's what you need to do: Fans can visit brewpositivity.com between Oct. 28 and Nov. 22 to nominate a colleague for a chance to have their positivity rewarded. Twenty-five individuals will have a chance to win $200 and a one-year supply of The Original Donut Shop Coffee. For the kind nomination, the nominator will also have a chance to receive a one-year supply of The Original Donut Shop Coffee!

WHY BRIGHTER HEADLIGHTS ARE BETTER The end of daylight saving time marks the start of longer, darker nights. That means many of us will spend more time over the next few months driving in the dark, relying on our headlights to light the way. Are your headlights up to the task? If you have older halogen headlight bulbs, they may not be. That's a safety concern. Sylvania Automotive's Headlight Savings Time campaign highlights headlight safety. Halogen headlight bulbs actually dim over time - up to 20-30%. As halogen bulbs age, the glass walls haze, blocking some of the light. Also, the filaments become faceted and thin in some places, leading to irregular light distribution. Unfortunately, most drivers are unaware of this fact, not realizing they need to replace bulbs before they wear out. Or, drivers will only replace one bulb, even though the other bulb is most likely the same age and already worn, creating an uneven field of vision. A good rule of thumb is if you can't remember the last time you replaced your headlights, it's probably time. "As the leading headlight manufacturer in North America, educating drivers about headlight safety is important to us. Tires, brakes, and wipers are synonymous with driver safety, but headlights and headlight replacement need to be part of the safety conversation," said Joe Verbanic, managing director of Sylvania Automotive. "Your headlights are the most important safety device when driving at night. If you can't see what's on the road ahead of you, your tires and brakes can't be used effectively." Verbanic added, "During the day, your vision is limited by just your eyesight. But at night, your headlights define your field of vision. You can't react to what you don't see, which means better headlights lead to safer driving."

A 20-30% dimming of your headlights means less light on the road and makes a huge difference at night, especially when traveling on dark roads with minimal overhead lighting. A recent AAA study found that over 80% of the vehicles on the road have halogen headlights, and that these lights may fail to safely illuminate dark roads at speeds as low as 40 mph. When it comes to replacing your headlight bulbs, you have options. Not all halogen headlight bulbs are created equal. Most halogen headlights that come with new cars are basic level bulbs. They're OK. They meet minimum requirements. Upgraded bulbs go far beyond basic bulbs to offer brighter, whiter light, and farther downroad visibility. So, with the end of daylight saving time, it's time to think about your headlights. Headlights are your first line of defense. To stay safe, make sure yours are providing the best protection. There are many opinions regarding how to improve self image but ultimately confidence is the key to a positive self image. We must discover our worth and it is our individual responsibility as part of the human community to build, encourage, and uplift one another. I have found through my years of experience in the beauty industry, we do not truly transform people externally without impacting them internally.

HOLIDAY HACKS: HOW TO SPEND LESS TIME COOKING AND MORE TIME WITH FAMILY PRESENTED BY BPT The holidays are a time to celebrate and make priceless memories with friends and family. However, when you are the person tasked with preparing and cooking for everyone else, you may often have to miss out on all the family fun and those moments that matter most. Here are several tips to get you motivated to get out of the kitchen and give you more time to enjoy the company of loved ones - without sacrificing any of your delicious holiday traditions. Ask for help When time is not on your side, there's nothing better than a little helping hand - especially when that help could be delivered right to your doorstep. Boston Market, known this time of year as the Holiday Experts, has fully prepared, precooked holiday meal spreads, as well as a la carte sides and desserts that can be preordered and picked up at any Boston Market location nationwide. You can even get a complete holiday dinner and have it shipped directly to your door! In addition, Boston Market restaurants are open on Thanksgiving and Christmas for any lastminute needs. Skip the prep work and time in the kitchen by ordering online at bostonmarket.com. Divide the responsibilities Who says you have to do all the work? Ask friends and family to pitch in - a little help goes a long way. A few weeks before your gathering, send a message to your guests inviting them to help with beverages, picking up ice, or bringing a side dish or dessert. And when the meal is over, have a designated clean-up crew with multiple people to get the job done faster. Leftovers for house guests Even if you have several guests staying in your home, don't feel obligated to cook brand new meals each day. Turn holiday leftovers into tomorrow's breakfast or lunch by adding leftover meat to omelets or putting together a sandwich bar. There are so many delicious ways to plus up Thanksgiving leftovers, like a turkey and Swiss bread pudding or even a turkey shepherd's pie! Use the right tools Save time by getting creative in the kitchen. If you run out of oven space, the slow cooker is a convenient alternative for baking desserts like hot fudge brownies, apple crisp and even pecan pie. You can also find easy no-bake recipes or dishes that can be made quickly in the microwave. Skip extra grocery trips When cooking for a crowd, you're bound to forget an item or two from your grocery list. Avoid unnecessary extra trips to the store by knowing your substitutes. If you run out of butter, you can substitute for olive oil or vegetable oil. Happen to forget the buttermilk? No worries - use watered-down yogurt or sour cream. Create a schedule If you're still worried about spending too much time standing over the stove, create a schedule to guide your celebration. Block time for socializing, cooking and preparing for guests, but don't forget to be flexible. Set out board games, crafts or photo albums - anything to encourage bonding and conversation so you're not tempted to keep working in the kitchen. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

HOME BARTENDING: YOUR GUIDE TO THE PERFECT DRINK

81

BPT

When Stacie Grissom of Garden Cocktails has folks over to her apartment, she makes sure to offer guests something to drink before they can even get through the door. She built her brand on the notion that anyone can make gorgeous and tasty alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks right at home, whether it's while entertaining or just relaxing. Below, you'll find some tips and tricks she has curated to help make anyone's home bartending experience a little more seamless. 1. Educate yourself Consider a beginner's course in bartending, read articles online or even watch some YouTube videos. These materials are intended to give you the basic knowledge of various tools, lingo and more to help you find your way around your home bar, as well as equip you with the confidence to serve! 2. Ice really does make a difference One of the simplest ways to elevate a drink is to use the right ice. Not only do the large, clear ice spheres look beautiful, they melt slowly to help keep drinks chilled longer without diluting - whether it's iced coffee or scotch. LG's InstaView is the only refrigerator that automatically makes large slow-melting spherical Craft Ice, measuring two inches in diameter, and can store 25 at a time in the freezer drawer, helping you eliminate the hassle of manually filling and freezing ice molds. Plus, it still has crushed and cubed ice in the door for the ultimate in convenience. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

3. Garnish your drinks Incorporating herbs, edible flowers and fresh produce into your drinks presents the opportunity to incorporate personality and additional smells into the whole experience. Think about using lavender, basil, colorful flowers and more to top off your drink. 4. Master your syrup game Many classic cocktails and mocktails call for every mixologist's secret weapon, simple syrup. Rather than go down the store-bought route, consider crafting your own! With a simple mix of water, sugar and a little elbow grease on the stove, you can crank out your own syrups with ease. One way to up your game even more is to add seasonal herbs, spices, veggies or fruits to your syrup. To take the guessing out of measuring, LG's InstaView Refrigerator features an automatic water dispenser that serves the exact desired amount (4, 8, 15 or 32 ounces) of fresh, filtered water. 5. Presentation is key Certain types of drinks are meant to be enjoyed from specific forms of glassware. Consider expanding your collection to ensure you're serving in proper form. For example, a Moscow Mule must be served in a copper mug or a spritzer in a Collins glass. "My favorite drinking vessels are the collection of eclectic tiki mugs that I've made in the pottery studio over the years," Grissom said. .What are the benefits of baking from scratch? Mostly, it's fun, and your whole family can join in. On top of that, nothing tastes as good as fresh baked treats right out of the oven. For another bonus, it makes the whole house smell great. But perhaps the most important reason to bake from scratch is that you'll know exactly what's going in everything you make. Even when baking delicious treats, you can savor all the flavor while also looking out for your family's wellbeing. Choosing ingredients carefully makes all the difference. If you want to reduce your family's consumption of artificial ingredients, here are tips for baking more natural treats this holiday season. 1. Choose natural sugar Skip the refined white sugar and substitute the same amount of Sugar In The Raw, made exclusively from natural sugarcane grown in the tropics. The hearty, golden crystals are made from the first pressing of sugarcane and never bleached, so they keep the rich flavor and color of natural molasses. Available in bulk, the 2lb box or 24oz, 4lb or 6lb bags of granulated Sugar In The Raw will keep you prepared for your holiday baking blitz. Take off heat, add white chocolate, cover and let sit 5 minutes. 7. Stir until smooth, then stir in peppermint extract. Let cool 15 minutes. 8. Pour glaze over cake, letting it drip down sides. If desired, sprinkle cake with peppermint candies. 2. Use natural food coloring For recipes needing colored icing or colored batter, you can now find natural food coloring on the market that uses 100% natural vegetable juices, rather than relying on artificial additives. 3. Try butter alternatives While regular dairy butter provides a unique texture that other products can't always duplicate, you can substitute at least part of the standard butter in many recipes with other choices like vegetable oils, cultured organic butter, grass-fed butter, clarified butter (or ghee), or even coconut oil as more healthful alternatives. Experiment with a favorite recipe first to see what ingredients work best. 4. Bake with fresh produce When you're baking pies or making other dessert recipes that contain fruit, opt for the best quality fresh produce you can find in your area. You, your family and guests will all notice the difference in taste. Make your holiday baking tasty and wholesome this year by using the best natural ingredients available. You and your family will love your baked goods as much as you enjoyed making them.

The grill guide: Picking the perfect wine for each meat BPT

Grilling is one of America's greatest pastimes, and if you love grilled meat, chances are you also like hosting meals for family and friends to show off your pit master prowess. Once you've mastered the art of the char, why not take it a step further? Serve wine that blows the lid off the meal, in the best possible way. The right wine pairing makes all the difference. The aroma and flavor of wines can highlight and enhance the taste of grilled food like no other beverage. And the good news is, it's not rocket science. Choosing wine depends mostly on what you're grilling, and how you're dressing it up what kind of sauce or rubs you're using. Here's a handy guide to wine pairings to take your event to theCheaKWoolfolk.com next level.

Mix it up If you're serving a mix of grilled foods, including pork or barbecued chicken or turkey along with burgers and steaks, you'll want to choose a versatile wine that pairs well with a variety of different types of meat and poultry. Since many pork recipes use sweet and tangy sauces, wine with a fruitier flavor may be just the ticket, like red zinfandel or a bourbon barrel aged wine. You may even want to add a little of the wine to the sauce. The Federalist Bourbon Barrel-aged Zinfandel embraces the uniquely American tradition of aging wine in charred bourbon barrels. The result is a fruity, spicy wine with dark cherry and cola notes, making the wine a great choice to pair with chicken or turkey marinated in barbecue sauce or grilled smoked sausages. For a stronger tannin structure and cleansing acidity that pairs exceptionally well with steak, a Lodi sourced zinfandel adds some zing to balance spicy, smoky flavors from your grill or smoker. Lighten it up When you're grilling lighter fare like turkey, fish or chicken, or if you're entertaining vegetarian or vegan friends, choose a white wine to enhance and match those delicate flavors and textures. Heavier barbecued meats and stronger flavors can easily overwhelm a lighter white wine, but a crisp chardonnay pairs very well with these foods. Chardonnay pairs perfectly with veggie burgers and grilled vegetables, turkey, chicken, and several types of fattier fish such as salmon, trout, tuna or rockfish. You can even serve it with Cornish game hen if you're feeling fancy.

Bold barbecue needs bold wine When you're grilling cuts of beef like brisket, tenderloin, a juicy steak or ribs and using potent spices and flavors like classic Kansas City or Memphis-style barbecue sauce, cabernet sauvignon is a great choice to balance those intense flavors. For example, within The Federalist's portfolio of wines celebrating America's heritage, The Federalist Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon is a medium weight red wine with a good grip from tannins, in wine speak - and what does that mean? It means the flavor and body of the wine is strong enough to hold up to the bold, smoky and spicy flavors of your meat. You can also serve it with game like venison or roasted and smoked vegetables. This wine has an aroma of berries, tart cherries, sweet oak and cinnamon, along with a delicious flavor that will wow your meat-loving guests. Another popular choice to serve with grilled meats like a flank steak is The Federalist Honest Red Blend, combining 53% merlot grapes with 30% zinfandel and 15% cabernet sauvignon. It marries the flavor of dark fruits with some spiciness and a rich, round mouthfeel. You can't go wrong serving a bold red wine with grilled red meat, as the high-fat content in the meat is balanced by the strong tannins present in red wine. Tap into these tips to help you select the right flavor balance to show off your grilling skills. Check out @FederalistWines on Instagram to learn more. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

3 INEXPENSIVE HOME MAINTENANCE PROJECTS THAT COULD SAVE YOU THOUSANDS BY: BPT Routine maintenance: two words that likely evoke eye rolls, exasperated sighs and dread for most homeowners who read, hear or even think about them. However, they're also a homeowner's best line of defense when it comes to protecting their most important investment - their home. "Many homeowners insurance policyholders are choosing higher deductibles because it lowers their insurance costs," said Christopher O'Rourke, Mercury Insurance vice president of property claims. "This means, however, that if they need to make a claim then their out-of-pocket costs will be higher. So, the best claim is the one you don't have to make, because you've taken the time to ensure your property is properly maintained. And the good news is that it generally costs much less than paying a deductible." So, with that in mind, here are three inexpensive projects that could save you a lot of money in the long run. 1. Inspect plumbing connections, appliance hoses and pipes for leaks. Refrigerators with icemakers or water dispensers, dishwashers and washing machines all have hoses that connect to your water supply. If these hoses wear out, blister or crack, or the connections loosen, they can cause leaks that can cause a lot of damage to your home and appliances. Replace these hoses with steel-braided hoses because they are less likely to fail and can be purchased at your local hardware store for around $20. Consult your owner's manual for hose specifications and recommended replacement intervals. Periodically inspect the pipes under your kitchen and bathroom sinks for leaks. Also, if there's a bathroom in your home that's seldom used, turn the faucets on and off, and flush the toilet once a week to ensure water continues flowing through the pipes properly.

"Oftentimes, people will notice a brown spot on the ceiling, bulge in the wall or swelling cabinets - all indicators of water build-up or leaks - and most homeowners policies don't cover long-term leaks," said O'Rourke. "It's important to address these things as soon as possible because they can create extensive damage if left untreated." If you suspect you may have a leak, but the source isn't easily accessible, time is of the essence. The average cost to hire a plumber is about $300, which is less than the potential amount of damage an untreated leak might cause. 2. Clean dryer ducts and vents. According to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S. fire departments responded to 15,050 home fires involving clothes dryers and washing machines in 2014, which is the most recent data available. It's important to empty your dryer's lint filter after each use because lint is highly flammable. Combined with the high heat given off during a tumble cycle, this is a recipe for disaster. Lint also accumulates in dryer ducts and vents. While they take a bit more effort and know-how to clean, it's just as important to do this at least once a year. Unfortunately, one Mercury policyholder learned this the hard way. "Our insured's dryer was about 12 years old and its vents had never been cleaned," said O'Rourke. "The resulting fire caused $300,000 in damage to her home, which she was forced to leave for 10 months. Insurance helps cover material losses, but you can't put a price on lost memories or having your life turned upside down." The average cost of a professional dryer vent cleaning is less than $200. 3. Visually inspect your home's exterior. Make a point of walking the perimeter of your home to look for cracks, chips or holes in the faรงade and loose shingles on the roof. Imperfections like these can be access points for unwanted water to enter the home, which can cause rot, mold or structural damage. If your exterior walls are coated with built-up dirt and debris, wash them first to make it easier to detect potential problem areas. You can do this by attaching a cleaning tool to your garden hose or renting a pressure washer. Costs will vary depending on which option you choose, but start as low as $20. Windows are another potential danger zone for leaks, so be sure to check the condition of your weather stripping, as well as look for chips and cracks. Consult a professional to determine next steps if you find damages to your home's exterior. O'Rourke also recommends speaking with your insurance agent to learn more about where to clean, what to replace and when to consult a professional before it's too late. "Another suggestion is to consider hiring an inspector to help identify areas of risk. Most people only do this before buying or selling a home, but you don't want to wait until it's too late," said O'Rourke. Taking care of your property now with these simple maintenance tips could save you time and money in CKW-THE the long CHEA run. K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE CheaKWoolfolk.com

10 ESSENTIAL LAUNDRY ORGANIZATION AND MAINTENANCE TIPS

104

BPT

Professional organizer Lisa Jacobs of Imagine It Done emphasizes the importance of creating strategies in the home for practical, efficient living. The laundry room is one of the easiest places to begin when trying to improve your organization at home. To help keep you on the right track she put together the 10 most important laundry organization and machine maintenance tips to help you care for your clothing, linens and towels beautifully. 1. Jacobs' business motto is: "An organized space is an organized mind is an organized life!" To that end, group your laundry room supplies in uniformed organizational bins with correct labels for visual peace of mind and to keep your items categorized. 2. Invest in the installation of a utility rack to house mops, brooms and bulkier cleaning items. This system is especially great for small spaces and an efficient way to avoid clutter on the floor and in corners where they are typically stored. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

3. Wall racks and brackets with a variety of sized baskets mounted on the wall or inside a door create more storage and organization for laundry and household cleaning supplies. 4. Pesky allergens can linger in your clothing and bedding, aggravating allergy sufferers. Invest in a washing machine that is certified by the experts to nearly eliminate allergens like LG TurboWash 360. For a consistent clean, avoid moisture buildup in the washer by wiping excess water from the rubber gasket. 5. Installing a mounted drying rack on your wall is a perfect system to hang and dry your delicates, keeping them organized in, and contained to, the laundry area. 6. Install a shelf directly over the washer/dryer for your detergents and supplies and never place laundry liquids directly on top of machines. Heat and movement with plastic containers may cause spillage and spoil the liquids. Front-load washers and dryers are best for freeing up space because you can put shelving right over them. 7. Imagine It Done recommends using HE "free and clear" detergents to safely clean clothes and linens. And to clean clothes fast, the new LG TurboWash 360 washer can tackle large loads in less than 30 minutes without sacrificing performance. 8. For the best results in washing clothing, linens and towels, separate whites from colors and run in separate cycles. Follow the same rules for towels and linens; wash separately. 9. If you are in the market for a new appliance, make sure you do your research first. Reputable organizations like Consumer Reports and American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) come out with yearly reports on customer reliability and satisfaction for appliance brands. These reports are based off consumer feedback and experience to help inform buyers on the best brands. LG home appliances took home the highest 2019 rankings in laundry for the second year in a row, according to ACSI's data. 10. In the spirit of living functionally and creating strategies in the home for efficient living, the business recommends investing in appliances like LG's newest line, which features advanced TurboWash technologies. Appliances like these save you time and money in the long run with their shorter wash times and energy-saving capabilities - a true win-win. Be sure to take time and get to know your appliances; read your manual carefully before operating for optimum results.

HOW TO MAKE ANY OCCASION SPARKLE BPT

What if everyone spent a little more time and energy celebrating everyday moments, tiny victories and micro-achievements? Rather than focusing on the negative, directing your attention toward what you are grateful for, and making a special occasion out of those things, is the secret to a happier life - according to many psychologists, writers and self-help experts. So what can you do, right now, to add a little more sparkle to your life, to celebrate those little occasions that actually make the difference between a bad day and a great one? 1. Tune up your tablescape Whether you just made it through a grueling day of meetings at work, you managed to take the car in for an oil change or you got through the holidays unscathed, it's worth celebrating! So roll out a tablecloth and light a few candles for dinner tonight even if it's takeout or delivered. Turn off your phone and relish the moment! CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

2. Dress to impress Going out to dinner with your significant other for the first time in ages? Or maybe you're staying in for a night with friends? What's stopping you from dressing up as if it was your first date or as if you're headed to a cocktail party? Toss on that little black dress or a fun, festive outfit just because. Add some sparkly accessories or makeup and enjoy the reaction when you show up looking like a million bucks! 3. Drink something sparkly For those everyday moments that you want to celebrate, fill a glass with a delicious sparkling wine, like Riondo Prosecco Spago Nero, or use it to create a tasty cocktail. Riondo Prosecco has a light effervescence and fresh notes of apple and pear that make any ordinary occasion seem extra special. Follow the lead of media personality, author, entrepreneur and restaurateur Giuliana Rancic by embracing the authentic flavor of Italy while you enjoy Giuliana Prosecco. Elevate your everyday dinner as you savor the fruity and elegant prosecco - or serve it to guests at your next awards show viewing party! Or for a bigger occasion, make a statement with another great prosecco worthy of New Year's Eve, a wedding or an anniversary. Nino Franco Rustico Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG will impress your guests or fellow revelers with its crisp, bright, refreshing and fruity taste. 4. Celebrate someone you love Stop at a party store and pick up banners, glitter, confetti or other decorations to celebrate someone you care about. Surprise them by decorating their doorway with a sign that says "Congratulations" or "Welcome Home" - even if they've just been at work all day. Bring flowers, cupcakes or other special treats to celebrate being together and whatever miniaccomplishment your loved one may have achieved recently - or simply for being there for you when you needed them. Show that person how much you love that they are a part of your life, and have a mini-party, just the two of you. 5. Crank up the music Instead of the drone of the TV or talk radio, play your favorite upbeat tunes on the way home from a long day at work. Crank up songs you love at home while you do your household chores to put some pep in your step. Make a "victory playlist" to celebrate finishing a tedious appointment or completing a project. Then set your favorite song as your ringtone. Let each day be an opportunity to enjoy everything life has to offer, and to celebrate being a part of it. By adding just a little extra sparkle, everyday moments can become special occasions. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

l.The holiday season is the year's busiest time for retail and ecommerce sales worldwide. Year-end holiday sales surpass one-fourth of all sales for the year, for the majority of businesses around the world. As these businesses gear up for this year's peak selling season, they grapple with more challenges and opportunities - than ever before. According to a new Visa Global Merchant eCommerce Study (GME Study), more than half of the e-commerce executives or business owners surveyed (52%) considered increased competition from other retailers to be their biggest hurdle in achieving their revenue goals during the peak holiday season.

What's the solution? According to the study, a vast majority of ebusiness leaders (87%) believe that expanding their online sales into new revenue streams - such as the global marketplace - is one of their biggest growth opportunities both in the near- and long-term future. Today, two-thirds of online businesses already take advantage of cross-border sales, which make up 31% of their revenue. However, over half of e-business leaders that are already reaping the benefits of international sales doubt their companies' ability to maximize those opportunities, once more proving the space to be a fickle yet fruitful destination.

118

End of year holidays mean sales worldwide The fourth quarter of the year determines whether the year has been a success or not for many businesses. Almost all (99%) of the ecommerce companies surveyed have made sales in Q4 of 2018. The majority of those (86%) made more than a quarter of their annual revenues from Q4 sales, demonstrating that holiday time is critical for e-commerce businesses. And beyond mastering these challenges, making the most of international e-commerce opportunities depends on one primary factor for businesses - keeping their customers happy, no matter where they're located. Consumers today have higher standards. Even if they are ordering products online from across the globe, they expect their experience to be the same. Survey participants reported that consumers demand a seamless experience, which they determined to mean: * Easy online checkout (cited by 41%) * Convenient payment methods (41%) * Quick delivery (44%)

While some retailers are slower to adopt these processes for global market expansion, two out of three businesses that do not currently sell cross-border plan to do so soon (and 90% are considering doing so in the next three years). However as many as 87% of those who haven't expanded into international sales have not yet pursued the opportunity. Similarly, despite cross-border sales' ability to generate significant revenue, more than half (51 percent) of e-business leaders of companies that already sell to international customers need help optimizing their foreign online sales and creating a solution that sticks. What's stopping them? Perhaps they see those hurdles, such as having to process foreign transactions and dealing with international shipping, as barriers that are too difficult to overcome. But more than 85% of executives surveyed said that expanding their business to include global online sales is the top priority for their company in achieving growth in the future. Solutions to expanded cross-border sales So how can businesses increase their capability to expand into the international e-commerce market and find new cross-border customers? Companies within the payments industry can help provide businesses with streamlined, secure and effective payments solutions, giving retailers of all sizes the ability to capitalize on untapped markets. Available programs and services these innovators can provide go way beyond helping companies cope with the perceived barrier of handling foreign transactions, and can include analytics and targeted data tools, comprehensive in-market insights and localized spending behaviors. HOW A SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY PREPS STUDENTS FOR THEIR FUTURE BPT According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2020 there will be 1.4 million computer science-related jobs available, but there will only be 400,000 computer science graduates with the skills needed to apply for those jobs. Furthermore, although computer science is the fastest-growing profession within the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), only 8% of STEM graduates earn a computer science degree in school - with only a small percentage of those students from underserved backgrounds. To discover the untapped talent among today's high school and college students, scholarship opportunities are needed to provide the encouragement and the financial means for more students to pursue careers in computer science. With the goal of inspiring and educating children and young adults to try computer science, especially students from underserved and underrepresented communities, Amazon has founded a program called Amazon Future Engineer, which is part of Amazon's $50 million investment in STEM and computer science over the next five years. Amazon Future Engineer is a four-part, childhood-to-career program that funds programs ranging from after-school coding classes for kids in grades K-8, to robotics programs and Intro and Advanced Placement (AP) computer science courses for high school students. One of the highlights of the program is the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship, which awards 100 high school seniors from underserved communities scholarships of $40,000 over four years to study computer science at a four-year college or university of their choice. The scholarship award also includes an offer for a guaranteed, paid internship with Amazon, after students complete their first year of college, to gain valuable work experience. It is one of the only computer science programs to offer both a scholarship and guaranteed internship placement to students. Previous scholarship winner and current Ohio University student Hannah Nguyen said, "Being selected for the Amazon Future Engineer program is incredibly empowering, especially with women being so underrepresented in the field. I'm so excited for my future in computer science and I'm looking forward to the amazing opportunity to apply my knowledge while gaining realworld experience at this summer internship." What are the scholarship requirements? * Completion of an AP computer science class in high school * Intent to pursue a computer science degree at a four-year college or university * Teacher recommendation Other factors considered include the applicant's academic performance, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community activities, work experience, a statement of career and educational goals, and financial need. Amazon's inaugural class of scholarship winners was announced in April 2019 and includes 100 students from 32 states. All of the recipients demonstrated financial need and more than half of the students awarded the scholarships were from underrepresented groups in the computer science field, such as women, first-generation immigrants and people of color. These 100 students are currently attending some of the top universities and computer science programs in the country. Another scholarship winner from the class of 2019, Jailynn Primus, used her award to enroll at Howard University. "To me the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship means an investment in my future and the opening of doors that I thought were previously closed to me," she explained. "Being a double minority in STEM by being both African American and female, this empowers me to stay focused on the future I would like to create for both myself and society." Applications for this year's Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship will be accepted through January 17, 2020 for current high school seniors. Interested students can apply at AmazonFutureEngineer.com.

VITAL CAREERS IN TODAY'S TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY BPT

If you want to buy anything at all today, you can probably find it online, purchase it, then have it shipped to your home in a matter of days - or even hours. You can track the package as it heads toward you, and you'll probably receive a text or email, and even a picture of the item, just as it's being delivered to your home. What does it take for that item to get all the way to you? Several steps - and a whole host of people who work in transportation careers. The most visible of those jobs are the truck drivers who deliver the goods you ordered to your door. The need for those drivers has become greater than ever, thanks to the booming e-commerce marketplace. The number of current truck drivers is actually at an all-time high, totaling 3.5 million. Shipping all these goods relies on fleets of trucks with qualified drivers nationwide to get things where they need to go. CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

Less visible are the thousands of technicians that keep the trucks up and running, maintaining them so that they're available to run routes around the country to keep those items on the move, day and night. Without the skill and expertise of these technicians, the fleets wouldn't be able to function. And even before the items make it to the trucks, warehouse workers are a vital part of this journey - they organize and keep track of all the goods, select the correct items, package them properly and then make sure that they're all headed out to their correct destinations. Because of this constant demand for home delivery of consumer goods, the need is greater than ever for qualified employees to fill all of these roles. Shipping goods faster than ever means that the need for larger, more efficient trucking fleets, and their supporting employees, is also greater than ever. Penske, for example, runs a fleet of up to 328,000 trucks, employing over 36,000 associates in over 1,100 total locations. The three most crucial positions that transportation relies are in increasing demand - and these jobs do not require a college degree. Truck drivers The job of truck driver has transformed over the years, becoming more reliant on advanced technologies. And newer trucks today are cleaner and more comfortable. Driving large tractor-trailers or delivery trucks is one of the largest occupations in the U.S. To work at a fleet such as Penske's, it is required that you have a commercial driver's license (CDL), and a safe driving record. There are dedicated truck driving schools available, and a number of qualified drivers gain valuable experience on the road while serving in the military. According to the most recent U.S. Census, at least 1 in 10 truck drivers are veterans, which is twice the rate of workers who are veterans overall. Technicians No positions are more important in helping to keep entire fleets up and running than diesel technicians. Diesel and body shop technicians use leading-edge diagnostic and troubleshooting technologies to problem-solve, repair and maintain today's vehicles, which are the backbone of the transportation industry. Vocational schools nationwide offer training programs for those interested in pursuing this essential skilled position in transportation. Warehouse To help run warehousing and distribution systems smoothly, a large number of employees are needed around the country. Warehouse workers may be involved in multiple roles, such as order picking, using a forklift or lift-truck, packaging, taking inventory and expediting shipping and receiving of goods. A third of today's truck drivers work in the transportation industry, an industry that supports over 2 million jobs - occupations that include not just truck drivers, but also technicians, managers and dispatchers. All of these careers are essential to the growing needs of the transportation field, to meet the constantly increasing consumer and business CheaKWoolfolk.com demands of CKW-THE CHEA K.
