Jon played on the 1992 State Semi-Finalist Bearcat football team that went 13-1-1, the 1993 State Semi-Finalist “Cardiac Cats” team that went 14-1. He caught a key 4th down pass from Tarleton State University HOF QB Chad Cole against the Kerens Bobcats in the 1993 Regional Semifinal.

Ryne is a graduate of the Pilot Point Class of 2010. Ryne was a 3-time letterman in Football with the Bearcats earning AllDistrict honors 2 of those years and was a 2-time letterman in Baseball where he earned 1 All-District honor. Ryne was the starting Right Guard for the ’08 state semifinal team and the ’09 15-0 State Championship team. Since graduating Ryne has worked for Locke Supply Company for over 10 years. Ryne’s married and has 1 son who was born during the inaugural season on the Bearcat Football Webcast.

David praised the play of the Bearcat offensive line, who were sporting three new starters in the contest. “Our offensive line, they did a good job, because Plainview was so much bigger than us,” David said. “Gave us fits. Ish did most of his damage in the second half. I think that’s because we were in better shape. Our linemen had some growing pains. Three new guys there. They did a good job for us.”
Trailing 28-24 in the fourth quarter, the Cats rallied to take the win. Coach Danny David said he was pleased with his team’s ability to claim the victory in hostile territory. “Huge win for us,” David said. “You look at the last two seasons, and we’ve had two really good classes of kids that graduated that we’ve had to replace. Our kids stepped up and beat a really good football team that will win a lot of games. We hope this will be the type of win that will kind of catapult us into a really good season.”
The junior QB found Kirby on a 45-yard gain, which set up a 10-yard TD run from Harris to tie the game at 14-14. Another Kirby forced turnover, this time an interception, set up the third Harris TD of the first half, as the Cats took their first lead of the game at 21-14.
The Bearcats will host Fort Worth All Saints this Friday at Massey Stadium. “It’s another tough challenge,” David said. “They’re a big private school. Last year they had four D One commits. Chris Palfreeman, who transferred from Brock, is out there at wide receiver. He’s fast. They got three good backs and a big fullback. I think they’ll try to smash mouth us a bit. But you get better by playing good people.”
Plainview would find the end zone on a 75-yard kickoff return late in the half to send the teams to halftime tied 21-21. The Bearcats moved the ball down the field to begin the third quarter, with Smith finding Kirby on some big gains. Kicker Elias Alejos booted the Cats back in front 24-21 with a 20-yard field Latergoal.
It wasn’t easy, but the Pilot Point Bearcats hit the road and opened the 2021 season with a 30-28 victory over Plainview, Oklahoma, on Aug. 27. Ish Harris led the Cats with 114 yards and 3 touchdowns on 23 carries. Making his varsity debut, Wyatt Smith passed for 275 yards and a touchdown, completing 13 of 27 throws on the night.
Trailing 28-24 in the fourth quarter, Smith put the Cats ahead for good with a 43-yard TD pass to Aydon Cox. The Bearcat defense held on down the stretch, refusing to let Plainview back in the game. “Aydon did a good job on the catch and Wyatt threw a nice ball,” David said. “What was huge, after we got ahead, was our defense. Our kids had a bend, don’t break mentality. I think our defense grew up as the game went on and I think that bodes well as we go through the season.”
The Cats got on the board following a fumble recovery by Asten Kirby. Harris completed the drive with a 4-yard TD burst to knot the game at 7-7. The game remained tied entering the second period. After Plainview claimed a 14-7 lead on a rushing TD, Smith and the Cats went to work.
