D
id you know every cooperative is required to conduct an annual meeting of the membership? The purpose is to share important financial information, occasionally vote on other matters such as by-law changes and of course––the great door prizes!
While rural Americans probably do a better job of staying connected to our neighbors (in part because we need to), it is not something we should take for granted. The simple act of smiling, saying hello and shaking someone’s hand truly lifts both parties.
CKenergy Electric Cooperative’s annual meeting is a community gathering where neighbors can meet new neighbors––or catch up with old acquaintances. As our lives get busier with the “errands of life” and more of our interactions with others are online (via social media), we must renew the value of face-to-face human connections. Very few organizations are uniquely positioned like CKenergy to bring together all members of our local communities.
Our country and community face many challenges. Our economy feels like it has been stagnant for years. Overcoming these challenges will only happen if we come together. CKenergy’s annual meeting is designed to take care of the important business of your co-op and the equally important business of building a real sense of community. All cooperatives serve both an economic and social purpose. While safe, reliable and affordable electric power
is crucial to our mission, improving the quality of life for all members is at the core of what we do every day. If you have not attended the annual meeting in the past or if it has been a few years, we urge you to take the time to be with your fellow co-op members. We get out of life what we put into it. CKenergy is connected to you by more than just powerlines. We are your neighbors, and we look forward to seeing you at your annual meeting. This year’s annual meeting will be held August 9th, 2019, in Weatherford, OK at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center. Registration and the meal begin at 5:00 p.m. and the business meeting begins at 7:00 p.m.

Transparency As an owner of the co-op, you have a right to know how it operates and how decisions are made that directly impact you. If the co-op is transparent and combines this trait with integrity and fairness, it will build trust with the members. Cognition

any businesses use the word “member” to describe their customers. Places like Sam’s Club or Costco and even American Express like to refer to their customers as members. You pay a fee to buy their goods and services, but that is really all you get for the “membership.” No right to vote for the Board of Directors or to participate in any meaningful way in the organization. In cooperatives like CKenergy, membership really does mean something more than just the right to buy electricity. Co-ops of all types are founded on seven cooperative principles that give us guidance and strategic direction.
Membership also gives you rights as an owner of this co-op. Brett Fairbairn is the director of the Center for the Study of Cooperatives at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. He makes the case that member relations is not just part of what co-ops should be doing, but in fact is the fundamental core business of the cooperative. He further lays out the three strategic concepts that any co-op must get right in order to survive and thrive: Economic linkage CKenergy is connected to you. There is a business relationship that serves you (the

Co-ops Work for MEMBERS Not for Profit$ Every penny you pay into the Co-op is invested into the Co-op. Every penny that’s not used comes back to you as capital credits. Here’s a look at what you see on your monthly bill and whether it is used to determine your capital credit allocation or not each year.

t’s time for you to get the credit — capital credits, that is— for helping build, sustain, and grow your local electric cooperative. At the end of June, CKenergy retired – or paid by cash or bill credit – $5,670,293.64 to 11,873 members like you across portions of 10 counties served by the co-op.

When you signed up to receive electric service from CKenergy you became a member of an electric cooperative utility. While investor-owned utilities return a portion of any profits back to their shareholders, electric co-ops operate on an at-cost basis.
If you were a member between the years of 1976-1991 and your capital credits total $20 or more, you should expect a check in the mail. Members whose capital credits total less than $20 will receive credit on their electric bill for the amount.

If the cooperative is in a good financial standing, CKenergy may retire capital credits for a period determined by the Board of Directors.

he 2019 “YouthPower” Energy Camp was held May 28 through May 31. Eighty outstanding eighth graders attended camp and were chosen from across the state by their local rural electric cooperatives. This year, CKEC sponsored five students to attend Energy Camp. J.B. Miles, Denver Bradford, Adrian Leal, James Coombes, & Braden Hill. The campers represented their coops at Canyon Camp, just east of Hinton, OK. “We had a terrific time at the 2019 camp,” said Stacy Howeth, OAEC Member Services Director and camp director. “The kids were very respectful and seemed to really appreciate the opportunity to attend this year’s camp.” While at camp, the delegates attended sessions on leadership, electric safety and potential careers available at rural electric cooperatives. The campers elected
directors to represent their districts during camp. The elected Board of Directors interviewed and ‘hired’ Adrian Leal as their manager. J.B. Miles had a successful campaign and was selected to serve on this year's Board of Directors at camp. Other special activities of the four-day program included hands-on electric safety demonstrations, including a poleclimbing demonstration and bucket truck rides from the linemen, they took turns riding an electric bicycles and learning about EV’s, hiking, an energy battle tournament and they got to spend some time with Pepper the Robot. Campers were also able to enjoy a dance that Thursday evening that included not just dancing but karaoke as well. The “YouthPower Energy Camp” is coordinated by the OAEC and sponsored by the rural electric cooperatives.

n Tuesday, May 21st, 2019, the CKenergy Electric Foundation Board approved a total of $53,237.61 for grants this quarter. Those funds will be used to improve the livelihood of individuals, fund school programs, they will help local law enforcement better protect citizens, and so much more! Giving to those in need is a great way to tap into the Oklahoma spirit and thousands of Oklahoma’s electric co-op members do just that by donating funds year-round through Operation Round Up. As a member of CKenergy Electric Cooperative, you have the opportunity to participate in the Operation Round Up program. The program works by allowing co-op members to round up their monthly electric bills to the nearest dollar amount. The spare change is transferred to CKenergy’s Operation Round Up fund and dispersed to local charitable causes. For example, let’s say you have a monthly electric bill of $84.62. The bill is rounded up to a flat $85, with the additional 38 cents going into the Operation Round Up Fund. On average, a co-op member donates roughly $6 each year. Seems like a small amount, right? It is, but when multiplied by thousands of other CKenergy members, Operation Round Up raises thousands of dollars for local causes. Operation Round Up funds are used to address important local needs. Local charities, youth groups, schools, fire departments, senior citizen’s centers and food banks are just a few of the beneficiaries of Round Up funds. Funds are also used to help needy individuals and families pay for medical equipment and other needs. CKenergy Electric Cooperative is passionate about the communities we serve. Together, electric co-ops with Operation Round Up programs in place have raised more than $100 million since 1989. Grants are decided by a twelve-member board of cooperative members who volunteer their time to oversee the program. CKenergy Electric co-coordinators are Boyd Lee and Devin Whittington. Requests for assistance are reviewed and evaluated quarterly throughout the year. We hope you will continue to participate in CKenergy’s Operation Round Up. Your small change will change lives, and together we will make a big difference right here in Oklahoma. Next quarter grant applications must be submitted no later than August 7th, 2019. Cheesy Meatball Cups from Cacique
Ingredients:
2 (8 ounce) cans crescent dough flour for dusting 5 ounces Cacique® Queso Quesadilla Jalapeño, shredded 16 frozen meatballs 1/2 cup garlic spaghetti sauce 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
Directions: Preheat oven to 350° F. Prepare two muffin tins with (16 molds total) with non-stick cooking spray.Extend dough on a lightly floured surface. Pull apart dough triangles and press each inside a muffin mold. Covering the bottom of mold and pressing up the sides. Sprinkle each dough cup with 1 teaspoon shredded cheese. Place a meatball on top of cheese, lightly pressing into the dough. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and top with 1 teaspoon of sauce and 1 teaspoon shredded cheese. Place back in the oven and bake for 10 minutes more or until dough is golden brown and the cheese bubbles. Serve with a sprinkle of fresh parsley.
