Year 1: Chalet garden extension:

• Address the issue of waste in Kochi, India as an aspect of liveability by developing an upcycling plant.

• Redesigning the garden and extending the living space for a French chalet using Sketchup and Lumion. It involved adding a conservatory, swimming pool, decking and a range of plants as per the client’s wishes.

• Transform the organic waste from nearby markets into useful products based on cottage industry. • Waste recycling awareness is raised by making the process visible to visitors and to help develop a circular economy.

Year 2: Public project • Design a new church space for 200 worshippers and community centre in Cardiff.

Year 2: Retrofit • Renovating a 1960’s bungalow near Mumbai to provide an efficient layout with modern amenities. • Maintaining the overall structure and surrounding garden. It is tailored with specific needs for a family of five.

canal elevation West elevation from Market canal

The west canal elevation has extensive glazing along the canal front to allow natural light into the factory floor and make the manufacturing process more visible to pedestrians. This will increase awareness of upcycling and help to invite people inside. Opening the canal front road was integral to the scheme with users of the building having direct views of the canal not blocked by overgrowth and fencing. The street trees and canal in fact help reduce the ambient street temperature.

project 02

community church BRIEF

To design a new church space for up to 200 worshippers and community centre in Cardiff. It includes a range of facilities including counselling spaces and a day-care centre to replace the ageing and undersized church currently on site.

7

site context

Church in context from above Bute park

The site is in Cardiff. It is situated between a busy junction on North Road to the East, Bute canal and park to the West, a pub to the North and mature trees to the South. Hence the overall strategy involved opening to the quitter green spaces on the South and West while providing shelter against traffic and noise on the North and East.

design evolution

first proposal

The design originally considered the most efficient arrangement based on services but evolved based on improving the circulation with the successive design being more flexible. The scheme switched the arrangement from East-West to North South better take advantage of the length of the site.

third proposal

Deep recesses were added on the East façade based on the idea of a bay and headland to provide shelter against the traffic noise. An atrium was added to improve natural ventilation and make the space feel larger.

site strategic response 1. Mature trees to the Southeast are preserved 2. Public area with benches to the south provides spaces for outdoor circulation and social interactions. 3. The street façade implements the ‘bay and headland’ form to offer greater depth as well as openings that are sheltered from noise and traffic. 4. The northern boundary of the church runs parallel with the pub, so it integrates better with the context. 5. The worship space is set back from the pub boundary and has partly sloped front faces. This minimises obstruction to the view of the canal from the pub garden.

project 03

retrofit project BRIEF

Renovating a 1960’s bungalow on the outskirts of Mumbai to provide a more efficient layout with modern amenities while maintaining the overall structure and surrounding garden. It is tailored with specific needs for a family of five

13

site context

client profile Father is 53 and is a structural engineer who works on public infrastructure projects. He works mainly at home on his PC, analysing drawings or taking calls. His main requirement is to have a dedicated work space without noise and distraction with plenty of storage.

The Son is 23 and studies economics. His lectures currently are mostly online hence he requires a good internet connection and a large study desk in his bedroom. He also wants a social space when inviting his friends.

The Mother is 52 and works part time for a local charity. She is a passionate gardener and wants to preserve the mature garden as much as possible in the renovated house. She also wants a separate dining room.

The Styrofoam base represents the concrete plinth the house rests on. Due to the flooding risk and soil conditions the house is kept a 1.2 meters above the ground level.

White foam: 230mm thick brick walls

The Grandparents are 75 and 72. They visit the family over weekends. They both enjoy reading and gardening. They are relatively fit for their age, though the grandfather has arthritis in his knees making it difficult to for him to climb long flights of stairs or stand up for a while. Hence, they would prefer a bedroom on the ground floor. The grandmother being devout would like to have a small pooja (prayer) room towards the North of the house.

14

retrofit plans The project extended the kitchen into the vacant veranda and added a lightwell with greenery and a pond in the centre of the house. The previous bedrooms were merged alongside a new staircase to create an open plan dining room with a mezzanine . An extra floor was added with the bedrooms and study. The roof was a giant terrace space with solar panels to provide electricity and a green roof to reduce the urban heat island effect.

New key materials brief 1.

Corner pillars: 300x300mm ‘Ferrock’ in situ cast concrete+ plastering

2.

Load bearing walls (230mm): 210mm solid brick wall+ 15mm acoustic plasterboard+ plastering.

3. Non-structural walls (150mm): 120mm solid brick+2x15mm plasterboard 4. Roof: 150mm precast RCC roof slabs+ plastering/20mm sandstone tiles. 5. Windows: Aluminum framed with double glazed low-E glass. 6.

Ground floor flooring: 15mm grey granite tiles

7. First floor flooring: 11mm OSB boards+ 10mm teak laminate.
