On behalf of the Cronulla Sutherland District Junior Rugby Football League Board, I would like to thank all of the clubs, players, volunteers and referees for making season 2024 a huge success.
Despite the rain we still managed to complete 11 competition rounds in addition to hosting eight huge Gala Days for all of the non-competitive age groups. The weather was kind in the final weeks of the season with the sun shining to create spectacular spring conditions for our two weeks of finals. In the final weeks we hosted 125 finals matches over four days and crowned 43 premiers as part of huge Grand Final weekend, including Joeys becoming back-to-back A-Grade champions at Shark Park to officially close out the season.
We would also like to thank our sponsors, clubs, coaching staff, players and spectators for their continued support during the season. In addition, we want to give a huge shout out to the Referees Association and all of the referees without whom we wouldn’t have a game.
The Cronulla JRL has grown once outpaced most of the other Junior Rugby League associations in the state with our player participation growing by 8.6% year on year. We had 6108 registered players this season. We continue to see growth in our female registrations and this year we saw Leaguetag numbers growing by over 20% and female tackle growing by 12.5%. But the growth was not just confined to female participation, with our senior men’s tackle age groups growing by a whopping 31% resulting in a strong competition across three senior divisions.
The board has endorsed and supported several initiatives this season to make it the successful season that it was.
• In conjunction with our NRL team we initiated our annual ‘Tag to Tackle’ transition program which encouraged and supported female participants to give Tackle Rugby League a go! It was another successful year where we saw a number of girls who were interested in trying Rugby League give it a go. We ran a modified development competition for these girls who will hopefully transition to play Rugby League for their clubs in 2025 and we thank Huw Ellis and his team for their support in this program.
• The season launch event at Wanda Surf Club which included a live cross to the Today Show This great exposure for the CJRL and affiliated clubs was the icing on a wonderful launch event that provided memorable moments for “Tiny Tots” participants across our clubs and some great footage, as well as the opportunity for our senior club captains and teams to be recognised when the launch event moved to the surf club balcony
• the implementation of the Super Saturday concept which was a celebration of community Rugby League in the Shire, featuring five A grade games back-to-back as well as participation from all clubs in junior games, relays and a club mascot race.
• reimbursing costs for all Level 1 trainer courses for volunteers in order to ease this financial burden on clubs and volunteers
• the return of representative open age Rugby League with the Luke Lewis Cup contest against Penrith Juniors. Hosted by CJRL, the game was transferred to Corea Oval due to wet weather and drew a big crowd who provided a great atmosphere which the players responded to.
• live streaming of all senior competition games via BarTV in addition to a Saturday schedule of junior games. These drew strong viewership across the 2024 season (senior games 55,041 views, junior games 71,101 views).
• free access live streaming of all grand finals held at CJRL venues,
• engaging professional photographers at all grand finals to provide photos for free to clubs and participants. This is something that we don’t believe any other association is providing for its members and the thousands of high resolution photos that have been shared have provided players, clubs and their families priceless memories that they can keep forever.
• conducting gala days for all non-competitive age groups u6 – u10 for both tackle and leaguetag competitions, with participants all taking home a participation medallion and goodie bag.
• supporting the development of representative opportunities for our open age leaguetag participants by again nominating a squad to participate at the NSWRL Representative Gala Day event in October
• we acknowledged and thanked some of our clubs' female volunteers by inviting them to the Cronulla Sharks NRLW 'Bubbles and Brunch' event which was held at Shark Park.
Concluding with our Grand Final weekend, where after two great days of Rugby League, we have crowned our 2024 premiers in all competitions.
Congratulations to all those who triumphed on grand final day. To those who tasted defeat, remember to qualify for a grand final is an achievement and a valuable experience, which in many cases makes a team better equipped to try again the following season
Apart from all our 6018 registered players, a big thanks to club committee members, trainers, coaches, team managers, and all those who ensure the sausages get cooked and the canteen trades at all our venues. Community driven sports like Rugby League don’t happen without good people like yourselves.
Our final edition of Shark Attack for 2024 recognises all our premiers and major award winners which is something we haven’t been able to do previously in this format.
We hope to see you all again in 2025 as we continue to grow junior and senior rugby league in the Shire.

Grand finals in the Southern Corridor competitions unfortunately didn’t bring any joy for CJRL teams.
In the u18 girls tier 1 grand final on Saturday 31 August, Engadine’s great run of form came to an end when they went down 20-6 to Campbelltown City.
In the u18 girls tier 2 grand final on Saturday 7 September, Como-Jannali went down to Corrimal 36-0.
In the u18 gold competition, Aquinas headed to WIN Stadium to take on Thirroul but the Butchers were too good winning 28-8.
Despite the results, all teams should be proud of their efforts in 2024 – particularly the last few weeks when they chalked up some of their best wins of the year.
Bring on 2025!
