KMK celebrates 20 years of marketing success

Chagrin Falls resident Barry Jacobson is marking a major milestone this year as his company, Kreative Marketing Kompany, celebrates 20 years of helping businesses grow through original branding and long-standing client relationships.

Located at 31313 Aurora Road in Solon, Jacobson launched Kreative Marketing Kompany in 2006 after previous business endeavors that were centered on building and maintaining client relations.

“I had a prior company in the janitorial supply eld, and after I sold that, I was looking for something to do that was similar in that it was repeat relationship sales,” Jacobson said.

Hoping to get involved with repeat customer sales, rather than selling big-ticket items once and not retaining a relationship with the customer, Jacobson decided to follow the lead of his father and get involved in the marketing sector.

Kreative Marketing Kompany originally opened in Chagrin Falls in September 2006 with a mission of helping clients increase their brand awareness and revenues through branded products that are designed and manufactured in-house at KMK.

“At our core, we’re focused on products,” Jacobson said. “ at’s how we started, by just basically selling promotional products and apparel.”

According to Jacobson, the company will design and manufacture anything from branded cups, hats, shirts, pens and more. All of this work is done in their warehouse and o ce in Solon, where the company has been housed for three years this May.

“Over the years, we’ve grown and evolved, and we do a lot more,” Jacobson said. “We have full graphic design capabilities, full warehousing ful llment and kitting. We do company web stores and incentive programs –

a little bit of everything that’s encompassed in promotional marketing.”

Over 20 years of leading the company, Jacobson re ected on one of his proudest accomplishments – the decision to pivot to manufacturing personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed his company to thrive during a di cult time.

“In 2020, it was obviously tough for everybody,” he said. “ ere was a lot of unknown, and when the world shut down, we were fortunate enough that we stayed together. We kept working. Actually, we probably worked longer days and harder days than we normally do, but it was very successful.”

Jacobson added that he is proud to have a consistent, excellent and hardworking team made up of 18 colleagues, many of whom are family outside of the workplace.

“I’ve got a mother and daughter, a mother and son, and that son that I just mentioned married another employee,” he said. “It’s a pretty tight-knit group, so it’s really nice. It’s nice to have consistency and people that are all rowing the boat in the same direction.”

Putting clients at the forefront of their priorities and maintaining personal relationships is a skill that has been instilled in his team members, Jacobson said, adding that this has contributed to the success of their long-term clients.

“We’re in sales, so that’s what we have to do at the end of the day, but it’s more about building and maintaining our relationships,” Jacobson said. “We have a lot of clients, some who have been with us for 10 to 15 years, and some who have been with us our full 20 years. at, to me, speaks volumes as to the job we do for people.”

Looking forward, Jacobson said he and his team hope to use their annual fall open house as an opportunity to celebrate their 20th anniversary with both clients and community members. Further details on that event are to come.

“We’re in sales, so that’s what we have to do at the end of the day, but it’s more about building and maintaining our relationships. We have a lot of clients, some who have been with us for 10 to 15 years, and some who have been with us our full 20 years. That, to me, speaks volumes as to the job we do for people.”

KMK employees attend trade shows each year to discover the latest promotional and other products for their nationwide customer network. | Facebook photo

Cleveland Heights’ Grocery Outlet not among stores closing

San Francisco-based retailer Grocery Outlet is closing 36 locations across six states, including six in Ohio, but the store in Cleveland Heights is not among those shutting down.

Grocery Outlet, a discount supermarket chain that o ers slashed prices on products from name-brand and private-label suppliers, announced the closure in an earnings call on March 4 and said it came because the business grew too quickly.

During the call, President and CEO Jason Potter said that its results for the fourth-quarter of 2025 were “unacceptable” and that there was “more work to do than we expected.”

In 2025, Grocery Outlet opened 42 stores and ve closed

its doors, bringing its reach to 570 locations in 16 states. Ohio, California, Idaho, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey are the states seeing closures with locations in Parma, Lorain, Canton, Youngstown, Ontario and Cincinnati among the shops shuttering. Shops in Columbus, Englewood, Canton and Boardman are among the locations staying open, as well.

e Grocery Outlet at 12438 Cedar Road in Cleveland Heights, which opened on July 10, 2025, and at 4766 Ridge Road in Brooklyn, which opened on Jan. 23, 2025, will both continue operations as normal.

During the earnings call, Potter said that 24 of the closures are in the eastern United States and represent around 30% of

the region’s stores.

“We are not fully exiting any state, and we believe we have a meaningful opportunity to grow in the east over the long term,” Potter said. “However, it is clear now that we expanded too quickly and these closures are a direct correction.”

Sales declined due to marketing issues and electronic bene t transfer distributions that had a negative e ect on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program business and a ordability, Potter said.

While Grocery Outlet plans to open around 30 more stores in 2026, Potter said it will take a disciplined approach to improve the supply chain e ciency.

Generator Pros

A POWERFUL, AFFORDABLE SOLUTION FOR HOMES AND BUSINESSES – AUTOMATIC STANDBY GENERATORS

Recent developments surrounding weather patterns and old electrical grid have created a renewed awareness that our electrical service is very fragile. It will continue to be a way of life.

What is your back-up plan? When electricity is down, it can take hours or days for it to be restored –in spite of the diligent efforts of utility workers. We cannot tame the weather, but the GeneratorPros at Shepp Electric Co. can help to ensure that you are safe, warm and still in business no matter what unlikely disasters will occur.

There is never a lack of demand for the sorts of GENERAC generators that Shepp Electric provides –a fact that has helped the company thrive for over 30 years now. “We are a family business with

family values! In fact, we are the only family-owned and -operated generator company on the North Coast. We cover all of Northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania,” Craig said, and this is one Geauga County businessman who racks up the mileage to show it. “We literally install two systems every day.”

Unlike any other company around, this is all they do. They are totally devoted to standby power, and this is why they are the area’s leading GENERAC “Premier” warranty dealer and installer. With over 6,000 systems installed and serviced, hundreds have benefited from the GeneratorPros for quality service and standby power expertise.

“We are very pleased to say that we have the highest and most reviews of any company on the eastern seaboard. We just focus on honesty, kindness and advertising integrity, and unlike others, we have never paid for our reviews” says owner Craig Shepp. Besides homes, the company has installed back-

up generators at countless area fire departments, police stations, nursing facilities, businesses where electrical service is not just a convenience – but a necessity. Systems are now seeing lifespans of around 20 years. Today’s systems can now be monitored anywhere in the world right from your cellphone. Thus, a very wise investment for anyone. To assist you with making the right standby power investment, we strongly advise you to consult with the GeneratorPros at Shepp Electric Company, Inc., who will conduct a free site survey and electrical load analysis in order to recommend the best size and placement of the system, whether home or business. Contact them before the next disaster Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 877-423-9010, or visit its website atGeneratorPros. com to view information about all of their services and GENERAC Generator Systems.

Business owners especially are very concerned

about loss. Craig notes: “Compared to the expense of lost revenue and inventory spoilage, an automatic standby genset is a bargain that will provide years of reliable service. It is truly a smart investment for home or business. You don’t have to live without power. While power storage cell technology is the next frontier of which we are now pioneering, standby generators are not going away.”

Over more than five decades, the business has remained committed to quality, service, and thoughtful curation of well-made

Carolyne and Paul first met while working at Higbee’s, where Carolyne worked in women’s apparel and Paul focused on home goods. They completed executive training while building their expertise that would later shape their own venture.

After a brief period in New York, the couple returned to Cleveland – now with two sons in tow – to open their own store, originally located in Bedford Heights. The store benefited from its proximity to large department stores, and drew in customers from all over Northeast Ohio who were seeking deeper product knowledge and a more personalized shopping experience. As an inspiring business leader, Carolyne continues to push the store forward, honoring its legacy while adapting to modern retail demands, ensuring that Block Bros. At Home remains a Cleveland institution for years to come.

NOPEC

NOPEC: COMPETITIVE ENERGY RATES ARE JUST THE BEGINNING

NOPEC is an electricity and natural gas aggregator chosen by over 250 Ohio communities to negotiate competitive energy rates for nearly 1 million Ohio residents and small businesses. As Ohio’s largest public retail energy aggregator, NOPEC buys natural gas and electricity in bulk then passes the benefits on to our customers. In fact, over the past 25 years, NOPEC has saved our customers hundreds of millions of dollars on their energy costs.

But NOPEC goes beyond simply being an energy aggregator. NOPEC also provides educational opportunities for Ohio students and residents, advocates for consumer-friendly energy policies, protects Ohio ratepayers by challenging utility rate increases, and provides an online energy savings center with tips and resources to help customers save even more.

ELECTRIC ENROLLMENT MAILING

Starting in April, all eligible residents and small businesses will begin receiving enrollment letters for NOPEC’s electric aggregation program for the term beginning with their June 2026 meter read date.

NOPEC is required by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to send enrollment letters to all current and newly eligible electric customers every three years. The enrollment letter also provides

details on how to opt out of the program if you choose to do so. Eligible residents and small businesses that want to join or remain with NOPEC do not need to take any action. They will automatically be enrolled in NOPEC’s Standard Program Price option. This makes it easy to take advantage of being a member of your community’s electric aggregation program. NOPEC also offers customers the flexibility to choose from other rate options including a Monthly Variable Rate program, 12- or 24-month fixed term programs, and 100% renewable content options.
