About the Audition Process Round One: Video Auditions

Round Three: Semifinals

April–June 2026 The journey to the Shining Star CLE stage begins with a video audition. High school vocalists graduating between 2027 and 2030 from 10 counties of Northeast Ohio: Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, and Wayne were invited to submit a video showcasing their talent and artistry.

July 12, 2026 Twenty-five semifinalists spent the day at the Mandel JCC refining their performances with guidance from the Artistic Director, Music Director, and guest judges. This unique experience provided valuable coaching and mentorship before students took the stage to perform once more. After the Semifinals, the judges selected the Top 10 Finalists who will compete in The Finals.

Students perform one song of their choice, accompanied by piano, a personal instrument, a backing track, or a cappella. A panel of local music professionals carefully reviewed the 166 auditions and selected the top vocalists to advance to the next round.

Round Two: Live Virtual Auditions June 28 & 29, 2026 Ninety-three students performed for a panel of music professionals during individual virtual auditions. Beyond vocal ability, judges evaluated musicality, stage presence, interpretation, and overall performance as they determined which singers would advance to the Semifinals.

Round Four: The Finals August 23, 2026 The Top 10 Finalists take the stage for an unforgettable evening of live music, performing alongside a professional band before a live audience. A distinguished panel of nationally recognized music professionals representing a wide range of musical genres, including pop, R&B, classical, jazz, country, opera, and musical theatre, evaluates each performance. After selecting the Top Four finalists, these vocalists return to the stage for one final performance. Then comes the signature moment of Shining Star CLE: the audience joins the judges in casting the final votes to determine the scholarship winners. Together, they award $19,000 in college scholarships, celebrating the remarkable talent, dedication, and dreams of Northeast Ohio’s brightest young vocalists.

Host and Artistic Director MONICA ROBINS

The Mandel JCC is thrilled to have Monica Robins, an Emmy Award winning reporter, well known as one of Northeast Ohio’s most reliable sources for all health news, as host for the tenth annual Shining Star CLE.

As Senior Health Correspondent, Monica has earned the respect of the region’s medical establishments, including The Academy of Medicine of Cleveland and Northern Ohio, for fair, accurate and unbiased reporting. She has the ability to take even the most complicated medical procedure and make it understandable to viewers. Her stories are often broadcast nationally at other NBC and TEGNA stations and many of her stories have aired internationally. With nearly 40 years of broadcast journalism experience, Monica has won eight Emmy Awards and numerous first place “Excellence in Journalism” awards from the Ohio Press Club, Cleveland Press Club and the Associated Press. She has also been inducted into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Monica is the lead singer for two bands, the classic rock band Monica Robins and the Whiskey Kings and the country band The Ninja Cowboys. Her bands have opened for well known national acts such as The Temptations, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Donnie Iris and the Cruisers, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Hall and Oates, Eddie Money and Michael Stanley and the Resonators.

CONNOR BOGART O’BRIEN

The Mandel JCC is delighted to have Connor Bogart O’Brien return as Artistic Director for his seventh year! A native of Ashtabula, Connor grew up as a classical violinist before ultimately studying vocal performance and opera at the Eastman School of Music in New York. During his time at Eastman, he was accepted into the nationally ranked male a cappella group, The University of Rochester Yellowjackets (as seen on NBC’s “The Sing Off”) as a featured soloist. Connor has been a headliner with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, the National Repertory Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony, the New Haven Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Charlotte Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra. As a songwriter, several of his original songs have been featured on national television including Netflix, The Hallmark Channel, and the 2022 NCAA Finals. “Inside Out,” the lead single from his first album, reached the number one radio position in France. Two fulllength albums followed, which led to performing as the opening act on more than 20 national tours including Jim Brickman, Huey Lewis and the News, Rick Springfield, Hall & Oates and Mariah Carey. Connor can be heard singing and recording jingles for companies such as Hasbro Toys and American Greetings, as well as in more than 60 countries worldwide as a headlining act on Princess, Holland America, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean cruise lines.

A Note from the Artistic Director

Ten years. When I hear those words, I am struck by how those years can feel both incredibly long and impossibly short. While I was not the original director of Shining Star CLE back in 2017, when I took over the reins in the midst of the 2020 pandemic, I was much more focused on our event’s survival in a time of absolute uncertainty than I was on its legacy. Yet here we are, years later, not only standing, but thriving. And what a legacy it has been. From the countless alumni who have graced our stage, many who have gone on to national tours and album releases, to the friendships and connections made among them. And beyond the stage, together we have raised millions of dollars to strengthen and enrich our community for generations to come. I’m so proud of what we have created -- the mentorship, opportunities and scholarships we have given to our young artists, but also the lasting impact we have made supporting multi-generational programming throughout our community. The students you will hear tonight are, as always, breathtaking soloists whose talent will bring you to your feet. But the incredible community we have created over this last decade is truly the award-winning ensemble that I am most proud of. And as a part of that, you should be too. Firestone CLC/Akron School for the Arts

As a senior Vocal Music major at Cleveland School of the Arts, Ka’mari Bearden has recently developed a passion for classical vocal performance, particularly opera. She was drawn to opera because it best showcases her vocal talents. While she has only been studying voice since the ninth grade, Ka’mari continues to grow as a performer with every opportunity she explores. Singing in choir has helped her discover new abilities and deepened her appreciation for music. She enjoys exploring a variety of musical styles and is eager to continue learning, performing, and expanding her artistry.

Hannah Gippin is a senior at Firestone CLC in Akron, Ohio, and plans to pursue a career in musical theater. This fall, she will portray Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors at Firestone CLC. Her favorite roles include Anna of Cleves in SIX: Teen Edition and Glinda in The Wizard of Oz. In 2023, she was recognized as Best Soloist at the 2023 Music in the Parks. Outside of performing, Hannah enjoys studying philosophy, writing, socializing, and listening to her favorite band, Radiohead. Her favorite musical is Sweeney Todd, particularly the song “Green Finch and Linnet Bird.” Hannah is deeply grateful to her parents, Shane Wynn and Josh Gippin, her voice teachers Emily Roh and Helen Welch, Firestone choir director Megan Meyer, and everyone who has supported her artistic journey.

Tatiaunna Hope is a senior at Cleveland School of the Arts with a passion for singing, performing, and storytelling through music. Some of her favorite roles include Roxie Hart in Chicago (2025), Carmen Diaz in Fame (March 2026), and Asaka in Once on This Island (July 2026). Each production has helped Tatiaunna grow as both a performer and a person while deepening her love for musical theatre. She is excited to return to Shining Star CLE and continue learning, growing, and sharing her passion for the arts. Tatiaunna is especially grateful to her mom, her choir director, and everyone who has encouraged her, believed in her, and given her opportunities to shine.

Sofia Krueger is a senior at Brunswick High School. A passionate performer, she has been a member of School of Rock since fifth grade, and her dedication has earned her a place in two of the program’s auditiononly groups: Headliners and All Stars. At school, she also lends her voice to the choir, continually stretching her range and skill. What sets Sofia apart is her versatility. She performs across many genres and refuses to be boxed into just one, embracing everything from her favorites to new styles that challenge her as an artist. As she continues to grow and take the stage, Sofia would like to thank the people who have made her journey possible: her family, her School of Rock teachers, and her friends and bandmates who share the joy of music.

Brendon Neuenschwander is a sophomore at North Canton Hoover High School and is honored to participate in Shining Star CLE this year. He has been singing and performing since the age of seven. His favorite roles include Evan in 13 the Musical (Stage Door Studios), Finch in Newsies (Players Guild Theatre), and Adam in Beetlejuice Jr. (North Canton Playhouse). Brendon also appeared in Weathervane Playhouse’s 2026 production of Shrek and was a member of the Weathervane Musical Theatre Pre-Professional Company from 2025–2026. He recently attended Belmont University’s 2026 Vocal Arts Intensive, where he was selected as one of 12 singers to perform in the camp’s showcase. Brendon wishes to thank his vocal coaches, DeniseMilner Howell, whose vocal coaching over the past year has helped him continue to grow as a performer and Debbie Cardy, who has guided him since the age of seven.

Anna Pastirik is a junior at Magnificat High School and is thrilled to return for her second year as a Shining Star CLE finalist after an amazing experience last year. Anna loves performing; she started when she was four years old and never stopped. Some of her favorite roles include Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Eurydice in Hadestown: Teen Edition, and Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical. Anna would like to thank her family and friends for their constant encouragement, especially her voice teacher, Emily Ortolano, for believing in her and helping her become the most confident version of herself. Finally, Anna would like to thank the Shining Star CLE team for providing this amazing opportunity for her and many other teens in Northeastern Ohio.

ISABEL STROZEWSKI

West Geauga High School

Cleveland School of the Arts

Charlotte Speyer is a senior at West Geauga High School and this is her fourth year with Shining Star CLE. She discovered her passion for performing through elementary school musicals and continued to develop her talents in choir, theater, and vocal training throughout middle and high school. Charlotte is a student in the Academy for Performing Arts through Excel TECC in Chagrin Falls, where she continues to grow as both an actor and vocalist. She is especially grateful to her vocal coach, Caitlin DeFranco, as well as her theater director, Emma Figge, and music director, Samantha Weiskind, whose mentorship has helped shape her as a performer. One of Charlotte’s proudest accomplishments was being nominated as one of ten students for the Best Actress Award at the Dazzle Awards for her performance as Sally Brown in, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Charlotte would like to thank her parents, Jen and Mike Speyer, for their unwavering love, guidance, and encouragement to pursue her dreams. She is also deeply grateful to her siblings and grandfather for their constant support throughout her journey. She carries their love and encouragement with her in every performance.

Isabel Strozewski is a senior at Cleveland School of the Arts (CSA) and is excited to represent both her school and vocal department. She has studied voice since 2024, exploring classical, musical theatre, and rock repertoire. She is also proud to work with Church of the Covenant, where she sings with their Chancel Choir as part of an internship. Isabel hopes to continue singing after she graduates this year and makes her way to college. Outside of music, she enjoys reading, writing, acting, and finding other ways to be creative. She is very grateful for her choir director and accompanist at CSA, her voice teacher at School of Rock Cleveland, and the musicians at Church of the Covenant. Most of all, she is thankful for her family and friends at CSA who have supported her music journey.

Meet the Finalists MYLES TAYLOR

North Olmsted High School

Myles Taylor is a senior at North Olmsted High School. Music has always held a special place in Myles’ heart, he’s been a member of several of his high school choirs and productions, including their a cappella choirs. Some of his favorite roles include Roger in Grease (North Olmsted High School), Warner in Legally Blonde Jr. (Olde Towne Hall Theatre), King Triton in The Little Mermaid (Magnificat High School), and the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz (North Olmsted High School). Myles would like to thank his friends and family for their constant support, as well as his choir director Alex Phan and vocal teacher Henry Foraker!

NATALIE TREDENT

Jefferson Area High School

Natalie Tredent is a junior at Jefferson Area High School who participates in show choir, band, cheerleading, soccer, student council, theater, and track. Natalie has performed regionally with many organizations including Erie Playhouse, Beck Center, Rubber City Theater, the Canton Symphony, Player’s Guild, and more; other credits include Interlochen Summer Arts Camp for their 3-week musical theater program in 2024 and 2025. She recently attended the 1-week Musical Theatre Intensive at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She is grateful to have been in the 2024 Shining Star CLE as an alternate and is excited to be back. She would like to thank the whole team for allowing her this incredible opportunity.

Meet the Alternates EMMY FAIRBANKS

STELLA VODILKO

Highland High School

Emmy Fairbanks is a senior at Highland High School and is honored to participate in Shining Star CLE 2026. Emmy appeared in 12 musicals, studied voice for four years with Kimberly States, and served as “Mother Dazzle” at the 2026 Dazzle Awards. Music has always held a very important place in Emmy’s life, shaping who she is today. Artists like David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Will Wood, and many more have fueled her creativity and inspired her to embrace individuality, believing that staying true to yourself is far more important than changing to fit others’ expectations. Emmy would like to thank everyone who has supported their musical journey, which she plans to continue for years to come. In the words of David Bowie, “I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.”

Stella Vodilko is a sophomore at Highland High School, where she performs with Chorale and Added Attraction, the school’s jazz choir. This fall, she will appear as Chloe/Young Alice in Wonderland. This past summer, Stella performed with the Ohio Light Opera in Damn Yankees and The Yeomen of the Guard. Previous credits include Starkeeper in Carousel (2025) and Brigitta in The Sound of Music (2024). Stella studies voice with Denise Milner Howell and is grateful for her guidance and encouragement. She loves performing and values the friendships she has built through theater across Ohio. Stella extends her heartfelt thanks to her family for their unwavering love and support.

Meet the Judges VICTORIA BUSSERT Victoria Bussert is an award-winning theatre director and educator who serves as Director of Music Theater at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Nationally recognized for her leadership in musical theater training, she has directed acclaimed productions for leading regional theatres and opera companies including Goodspeed Opera House, Great Lakes Theater, Cleveland Play House, Dallas Theater Center, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Portland Stage, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and Idaho Shakespeare Festival. Her New York credits include Manhattan Theatre Club, the York Theatre, and New World Stages. Vicky has directed seven national tours, and her work has been seen internationally in London, Denmark, Russia, Africa, and Brazil. She is known for championing both new works and classic musicals while mentoring the next generation of performers. A recipient of the 2019 Cleveland Arts Prize, she was also named one of Music School Central’s 10 Legendary Music Professors.

SCOTT COULTER Scott Coulter is one of New York’s most honored vocalists, earning five MAC Awards, five Bistro Awards, and two Nightlife Awards for Outstanding Vocalist, along with Emmy and Grammy nominations. He directed and starred in the world premiere of A Christmas Carol: The Symphonic Concert with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, later reprising the role in the Emmy-nominated PBS production. His credits also include an Emmy-nominated performance in American Song and a Grammy nomination as a featured vocalist on Sondheim Unplugged: The NYC Sessions. Scott is creator, arranger and director of several touring shows, including Music of the Knights, The Wonderful Music of OZ, and Blockbuster Broadway. Scott performs internationally as a solo artist and collaborator with renowned performers including Stephen Schwartz and Sheena Easton. He is the founder of Spot-On Entertainment and Spot-On Arts Academy, resident director of programming at 54 Below, artistic director of the Pocono Mountains Music Festival, founder of the Pocono Pops!, and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Meet the Judges CARL TOPILOW Conductor, clarinetist, educator, and author Carl Topilow has influenced generations of musicians through an accomplished career spanning orchestral performance, conducting, and teaching. A frequent guest conductor, he has led 134 orchestras in 37 states and 12 countries. Carl is the founding conductor of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, conductor of the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, and Conductor Laureate of the National Repertory Orchestra after serving as its music director for 42 years. He was named Faculty Emeritus at the Cleveland Institute of Music after 37 years leading its orchestral program and conducting graduate studies. A versatile performer, he continues to appear as a clarinetist in classical, jazz, popular, and Klezmer music. Through his conducting, teaching, and performances, Carl has built a lasting legacy of artistic excellence and mentorship throughout the orchestral world.

MARC WEAGRAFF Dr. Marc Weagraff is Professor of Voice at Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Performing Arts, where he teaches Musical Theater, Voice Performance, and Music Education majors. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan and the Cleveland Institute of Music and is widely respected for his success in training singers. His students have appeared on Broadway, national and international tours, network television, leading opera programs, and prestigious graduate schools including Curtis, Yale, Eastman, and Indiana University. In addition to his teaching, Dr. Weagraff is Artistic Director of Master Singers Chorale and Co-Director of Music at Our Lady of Grace Parish. An accomplished performer and conductor, he has appeared with opera companies and orchestras across the country and continues to serve as a guest conductor, clinician, recitalist, and soloist throughout the region.
