THE DAY I REALIZED “SAFE” AND “SOLD” AREN’T ALWAYS THE SAME THING
There was a time when I assumed that if a personal care product was sitting on a store shelf, it had to be one of the healthiest choices available.
As a registered nurse for 13 years, I trusted the systems designed to protect consumers. Then I spent the next 25 years raising our four children as a stay-at-home mom.
When my children were grown, I wanted to return to work in a way that still reflected who I was. I wanted to educate, serve others, and continue making a difference.
That’s when clean beauty unexpectedly entered my life.
What began as curiosity quickly became a passion.
As I learned more about ingredients commonly found in personal care products, I began reading scientific literature about endocrine-disrupting chemicals— ingredients researchers have identified as having the potential to interfere with our hormone system. Since hormones influence metabolism, reproduction, mood, sleep, and development, I couldn’t help but wonder why more people weren’t know about this.
Then I learned something that stopped me in my tracks.
The European Union has restricted or banned well
over 1,400 chemicals for use in cosmetics, while the United States had prohibited only 11 just a decade ago.
That doesn’t automatically mean every ingredient allowed in the United States is unsafe.
But it did make me realize something important:
Just because something is legally sold doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the healthiest option for me or my family.
That realization changed everything.
As a nurse married to a vascular surgeon, prevention has always been a guiding principle in our home. We have long believed that prevention is one of the most powerful forms of healthcare. While we can’t eliminate every environmental exposure, we can make betterinformed choices when opportunities exist.
One of those opportunities is skincare.
Most traditional skincare products are made with 70% to 95% water. Water itself isn’t harmful, but once it’s added to a formula, preservatives become necessary to help prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast. Many products also contain fillers that dilute the concentration of beneficial ingredients.
Then I discovered something different.
I learned about a European company that spent more than two decades developing waterless skincare by replacing water with hydroxytyrosol-rich olive leaf cell elixir. Hydroxytyrosol is one of nature’s most powerful plant antioxidants, found naturally in olive leaves.
Growing Artists with Confidence Camaraderie and Dedication
Because these formulations don’t rely on added water, they don’t require the same preservative systems as conventional water-based skincare. Instead, the focus is on maximizing bioactive plant ingredients.
Then I learned about their mission.
Since 2013, the water not used in manufacturing has helped fund clean water wells in Africa, providing communities with access to one of life’s most basic necessities. I love knowing that choosing products designed differently can also help create meaningful change around the world.
That company is Olive Tree People. Although it has been trusted throughout Europe for more than 23 years, it has only been available in the United States for the past three years. I feel privileged to introduce people to an option they may never have known existed.
Today, I don’t see myself as simply recommending skincare.
I see myself as helping people become more conscious consumers.
