Retro fun at the spring photo shoot

Another successful Jstyle photo shoot is now recorded here in our spring 2024 issue.

This time, we headed west to Mahall’s in Lakewood – the live music venue, bowling alley, restaurant, bar and overall cool place for Clevelanders. And the timing was perfect: this year, Mahall’s is celebrating its 100th birthday.

I’ve written many times here about how much fun our Jstyle photo shoots are, and this was no exception. I was excited to capture everything Mahall’s has to o er, as well as show o seasonal fashion (with a hint of a trip back to the 70s). I loved the nostalgic vibe, and especially the record wall in the Pins & Needles bar seen in the background of our magazine cover (it also shows one of my all-time favorite albums, “Let It Bleed” by The Rolling Stones).

Much planning and foresight go into each photo shoot – from our fashion coordinator, design manager, digital content producers, models, venue, photographer, makeup artist, fashion boutique partners, myself and several others on our team who make sure everything comes together smoothly. And new for this issue, Megan Piccione of her namesake jewelry boutique, Megan Piccione High Jewelry in Beachwood, and her father and colleague, Dave Piccione, joined us to show some of their stunning and unique jewelry which they selected perfectly to match our models’ styles.

I especially want to shout out the four models who participated in the photo shoot – Anne, Jacob, Stacey and Zack. As you may know, Jstyle selects our models from community nominations, and each of them volunteers their time to take part in the experience. They all did an awesome job capturing the vision we sought for the magazine.

Also in this issue, we check in with the SLFMKR clean beauty boutique in Shaker Heights for advice for anyone dealing with acne. We also visit the Winds of Change boutique in Chagrin Falls for spring fashion recommendations.

And for our food feature, we take a peek inside Heritage Steak & Whiskey, a new Woodmere steakhouse and whiskey haven from Doug Petkovic. Adding home and decor into the mix, we also visit The Hiatus, a new

resort-inspired Beachwood apartment complex, and Sheraton Furniture in Willoughby for updating furniture to t with current trends.

Going back to the photo shoot, I encourage anyone interested in modeling for future issues of Jstyle to nominate yourself at cjn.org/ jstylemodels. You simply have to be Jewish, be over 18 years old, live in Northeast Ohio and be available for a weekday photo shoot.

Also, important: our summer issue will be our annual Singles Issue, for which we are looking to feature single Jewish Clevelanders in our photo shoot and celebrate them with a magazine release party. There are still a few days to nominate anyone you may be thinking of – yourself, a family member, coworker or friend – so be sure to let us know about them at cjn.org/jstylesingles by April 21 (late nominations may be considered as well). ‘SEE ME’ at Roe Green Gallery

The photography exhibition “SEE ME,” on view in the Roe Green Gallery at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland in Beachwood, explores artist Michal Chelbin’s play on one’s identity. Chelbin’s photography attempts to capture human stories in everyday life – the identities of people not in the mainstream, many belonging to the edge of society and existing between the odd and the ordinary. In this exhibit, on view through August, her main themes are not social or topical, but collective and mythical; she searches for people who have a legendary quality in them.

A look inside Mahall’s

Celebrating its 100th anniversary later this year, Mahall’s continues to be timelessly popular whether for concertgoers, casual or serious bowlers, or those simply wanting to go out for cocktails and company.

Co-owner Sue Shestina says it’s “unbelievable” to be with Mahall’s during the centennial year, for which a birthday party will be in the works. She is a 20-year employee of the Lakewood venue and became coowner with Cory Hajde and Joseph Pavlick about three years ago, noting other employees have worked there far longer. Shestina promised the late former owner Arthur Mahall – whose father John Mahall founded the venue in 1924 – when he retired that she would stay until it hit 100 years, she adds.

In addition to its concert and event spaces, vintage clothing and record shop at the front, and top- oor restaurant and bar, Mahall’s contains the groovy Pins & Needles cocktail lounge in the basement next to the bowling alley. Pins & Needles specializes in “70s classic cocktails, highballs and your dad’s favorite beer,” according to the website, and features a vintage record wall and a wealth of far-out decor.

And, the venue’s most recent modernization involved renovating to create The Roxy – a funky new auditorium-sized space, named for the ballroom previously in the space in the 1920s and 30s. The Roxy, which opened in September 2023, can t more than 800 people standing. Meanwhile, the longtime concert space ts 350 people standing, meaning The Roxy changes the game in terms of the live music

acts and size of events Mahall’s can attract (it also can host weddings and large parties). As a decor theme, The Roxy’s lights and other accents incorporate old bowling machine parts, and the bar and walls are made of “kickback wood” from the bowling alley, Shestina says.

“That’s probably the best thing we have right now is The Roxy,” she adds.

“You no longer have to go to New York, Miami or Beverly Hills to get your hands on haute couture. It’s now right here in Beachwood and open to my customers in a private, uninterrupted and tasteful experience,” says Piccione, a congregant of The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood. Her father, Dave, also assists her with the boutique’s operations.

And for the Jstyle photo shoot, Piccione selected jewelry to t the models’ out ts from local fashion boutiques, also with which Jstyle partners. Her favorite piece from the photo shoot was a blue sapphire and diamond ring, which she notes is naturally mined, unheated and untreated – making it fully natural – and deep in color yet with “a beautiful sheen to it when it hits the lighting.”

“The design around it really accentuates that color, so the diamonds in that shape and in the design that they’re in really bring that piece to a higher level,” she adds. “Rather than just everyday, where it’s more of a statement piece.”

SAFE SOLUTIONS

Tips for non-toxic skin care to fight acne

With a surplus of skin care brands and products to choose from, nding the right regimen may be intimidating –especially if you are seeking out brands that do not contain harmful or potentially harmful ingredients.

As a place to start, Kait Turshen, founder and owner of SLFMKR at the Van Aken District in Shaker Heights, which specializes in non-toxic or “clean” skin care and beauty products, recommends tips and products to help manage and minimize acne breakouts.

“At SLFMKR, we believe in bio-individual recommendations based on the likely cause of acne and/or breakouts, as well as a person’s skin type and current product regimen,” Turshen says. “In general, there are two key factors that cause acne and breakouts.”

The rst factor is acne caused by hormonal shifts, she notes. And while these kinds of breakouts are caused internally, there are many products and approaches to managing hormonal acne from a topical standpoint.

The second factor that typically causes breakouts is when a clogged pore is in ltrated by bacteria, as pimples are essentially mini infections on the skin. Pores can be clogged by oil, dead skin or dirt and debris, she adds.

Despite the di erent root causes, Turshen suggests ve tips to reduce the opportunity for bacteria to “meet a clogged pore and turn into acne.”

Step 1: A basic four-step regimen consisting of cleanser, toner, serum and moisturizer.

For acne- ghting cleansers, Turshen suggests the Herbivore Aquarius BHA + Blue Tansy Clarity Cleanser. BHA is a beta hydroxy acid that helps dissolve

clogged pores while blue tansy is antiin ammatory. She also suggests the OSEA Ocean Cleansing Mudd, which helps draw impurities out from pores.

For toner, the Ursa Major 4-in-1 Essential Face Tonic is “a great multitasker with a dose of witch hazel and BHA, both of which are great acne ghting ingredients,” Turshen says.

For a serum, she suggests using the Odacité Clarifying Serum: Salicylic + Hyaluronic Acid two to three times a week as a chemical exfoliant. It is “not over drying because it is formulated with hyaluronic acid,” Turshen notes.

For moisturizer, the OSEA Blemish Balm with Plant Based Salicylic Acid can be “great” for acne-prone skin. “Its formulation of ve di erent types of seaweed paired with salicylic acid helps to both prevent and clear acne,” she says.

Step 2: Double cleansing in the evening if wearing SPF and/or makeup.

“(It) is exactly how it sounds – cleansing your face twice,” Turshen says. “The rst cleanse helps to remove the layer of makeup and/or SPF while the second cleanse is able to focus on actually cleansing your skin and helping to remove any impurities from your pores.”

Just this step can make a huge di erence in reducing breakouts, she says.

“I have worked with so many clients to implement this simple practice and seen incredible improvement as this small, extra step of an additional cleanse truly helps to further cleanse and therefore reduce the opportunities for clogged pores to develop,” Turshen says.

Step 3: Exfoliate two to three times per week.

Exfoliation can be done with a physical or chemical exfoliant. A physical exfoliant, such as a face scrub, helps to “physically slough o any dead skin cell buildup, which can clog pores if not addressed,” she notes. Alternatively, a chemical exfoliant, typically an acid or enzyme applied topically, helps to gently dissolve any buildup.

Step 4: Avoid over treating your skin.

“More is not more when it comes to skin care,” Turshen warns.

Over treating the skin through too much physical exfoliation or a high frequency of active, potent ingredients can cause a deterioration of the skin’s microbiome and barrier – the layer of skin that keeps the good stu in and the bad stu out, she explains.

“If this layer is compromised, you will be more prone to acne and breakouts as you will not have the level of protection you should have if it were intact and healthy,” she says.

One Love Organics

Botanical A Facial Cleanser and Botanical B Enzyme Cleansing Oil are a “great duo” for double cleansing, says Kait Turshen, founder and owner of SLFMKR.

Step 5: Avoid touching your skin with unclean hands.

“Most people do not realize they are even doing this, but if you are touching your face with hands that have been touching door handles, cellphones, etc., and there is a clogged pore, any bacteria on your ngertips puts you at risk for developing acne when you are touching your face,” Turshen says.

SLFMKR o ers more than 60 non-toxic products, meaning they do not contain harmful or potentially harmful ingredient, but can include synthetic ingredients.

“It is important to note that many synthetic ingredients are completely nontoxic and help improve things such as the e cacy, shelf life and more for a product,” Turshen says. “As long as they are clean synthetics, they are not bad.”

With an emphasis on “bio-individual recommendations,” SLFMKR accounts for a customer’s budget, skin type,

current product regimen and skin care concerns and goals when recommending products, she adds.

“Skin care is not a ‘cut and paste’ approach at SLFMKR as skin type does play a notable role in products we would recommend,” Turshen says. “For example, we would recommend a gel-based cleanser for more oily-prone skin, and an oil or milky cleanser for those with dry skin.”

And, if you are not sure where to start, she suggests trying the OSEA Blemish Solutions set to test several acne- ghting products.

Always see a dermatologist if acne is cystic, painful or not helped with overthe-counter-treatment, if you suspect your acne is fungal in nature, or if a medical professional or esthetician has classi ed your acne as Grade 3 or Grade 4, she says.

“Or, if you have any doubt and feel helpless, never hesitate to call a dermatologist,” Turshen says. sj

Sleek for Spring

No longer needing bulky winter coats that hide the rest of your out t, spring is the time to start showing o your best fashion looks.

Anna Gorjanc, manager and stylist at Winds of Change in Chagrin Falls, shares with Jstyle how you can stay on top of seasonal trends by incorporating cool jeans, metallics and pastels into your out ts. And, no out t is complete without accessories, and Gorjanc’s choices for elevating any look are necklaces by local artist Gena Page Designs.

Trendy Jeans

While denim is always in style, the style of jeans often changes from season to season. For spring 2024, Gorjanc says barrel-leg jeans are all the rage. She styles Free People’s barrel jeans in the color milk with Another Love’s Mona top in the color vintage cream for a light, monochromatic trendy look.

“(Barrel jeans) come in so many colors, but for spring we thought this light-wash, creamy color would be so cute paired with a ru e-sleeve little sweater – perfect for transitioning into spring,” she says.

But if the wider pant leg of barrel jeans isn’t for you, you can still feel fashionable in a light-wash jean – like Mother’s The Runaway Step Fray in the color California cruiser, or gray-wash

jeans like Mother’s The Hustler Ankle Fray jeans in the color “barely there.”

“(The Hustler Ankle Fray jeans) hit her right at her ankle bone, and it looks great with sneakers,” Gorjanc says.

Metallics

Take a monochromatic look like the cream-color barrel jeans and short-sleeve sweater, and bring it to the next level with a bright, metallic belt, such as the Free People We The Free Metallic Jona Belt in the color gumdrop metallic.

“That also goes with the little crossbody (Free People Plus One Embellish crossbody bag in color weathered brass) that’s great for going out for date night, going out with the girls,” Gorjanc says. “It ties the metallics together and it just has that pop of color.”

Layering is also a fun way to incorporate trends during the spring. For example, the Free People Margot Jacket in the color golden wheat combo has that metallic shimmer and can take a look from day to night.

Pastels

Light fabrics and light colors are great for spring, and that’s why Gorjanc pairs the Free People Spring Fling mini dress in the color tea combo with the Free People Flying High bomber jacket in the color denim gray.

“We have this super cute and casual, little owy dress here in a oral pattern layered with a little jacket on top,” she says. “I love the pop of blue with the pinks, it’s really cute together. And when it’s cold in the beginning of the day, throughout the day it gets a little warmer, you can take the jacket o .”

She pairs this pastel ensemble with brown shoes and accessories, like the A.S. 98 Labo sandal in the color Calvados and the Latico Leathers Sigourney crossbody bag in the color Cognac.

Gorjanc also recommends buttondown shirts to have as staples in your closet for spring and summer. She picked out two Bella Dahl button-downs, the Shirt Tail button-down in the color oasis green and the full button-down Hipster shirt with lilac oret print, paired with light-wash jeans. sj

Appetizing bites about Jewish chefs, restaurateurs and community staples

Kiln to open at Van Aken

A new European bistro-inspired restaurant from Cleveland chef Douglas Katz is slated to open in early September. Kiln will take over the space previously occupied by Shake-It at 3396 Tuttle Road at the Van Aken District in Shaker Heights.

The restaurant will highlight the “modern American bistro,” often inspired by classic European bistro experiences, Katz tells the Cleveland Jewish News. The menu, developed by chef Cameron Pishnery in collaboration with the rest of the Kiln team, will o er a mix of classic options with a modernized twist. It will take a “modern approach to eating” with gluten-free, low-sugar and plant-based options, along with classics such as braised short ribs, sh and fresh vegetables, he says.

Sharable dishes are also important, Katz says, and will be

Nubeigel recognized as ‘Best Bagel Shop’ in Ohio

Nubeigel in Cleveland Heights is ranked the best bagel shop in Ohio by the Tasting Table media company. “The Best Bagel Shops In Every State” list was calculated using online reviews “triangulated with our own experiences and other professional reviews,” according to Tasting Table’s Feb. 29 article.

“It is nice to have that recognition, but I think more than anything, it gives you a good opportunity to force you to do a lot of self-re ection and appreciate what you’ve done,” owner Josh Admon, a Zichron Chaim congregant and University Heights resident, tells the Cleveland Jewish News.

The bagel shop, under kosher supervision by Rabbi Mordechai Kaplovitz, o ers “handrolled artisan beigels” in multiple avors, including everything, onion, cinnamon

plated on their own and come in sizes that can be enjoyed among the whole table.

The atmosphere of the new restaurant will be laid back, fun and exciting – not stu y or formal, says Todd Thompson, Katz’s business partner of 12 years. Katz also owns Zhug, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant in Cleveland Heights, and Amba, an Indian-inspired restaurant in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood.

“With Kiln, we’re going to create a dining experience that, when the (COVID-19) pandemic happened, I think we sort of lost a little bit,” Katz says. “Our goal is to create this new, amazing dining experience that has great service, food and beverage, and a fun, exciting space.”

sugar and za’atar, its website reads. Schmears and other add-ons like smoked salmon, cucumber, tomato, onion and kimchi are available for an additional price. The shop also sells Peristyle Co ee – a brand created by Cleveland co ee connoisseur Charlie Eisenstat.

Nubeigel opened in July 2022 at 2254 Lee Road. Admon grew up in Los Angeles, lived and worked throughout Europe and settled in Israel for 15 years before moving to the Cleveland area, Jstyle previously reported.

“The idea is that I am building a business and opening my doors to as many people as I can,” he told Jstyle in 2022. “I really respect and gain a lot of diversity from di erent people. Nubeigel is a bagel shop that happens to be kosher, not a kosher bagel shop.”

Antica Italian Kitchen + Bar now open in Beachwood

Taking over the space at 3355 Richmond Road in Beachwood, Antica Italian Kitchen + Bar opened its second location on March 20. The restaurant is owned by Fadi Daoud, who also owns its sister and neighbor restaurant, Heck’s Cafe.

Antica, which lls the space that was previously Red, the Steakhouse, serves handmade pasta, pizza, vegetable dishes and additional main courses authentic to di erent regions of Italy, using imported and locally sourced ingredients, according to a news release.

“(We o er) a full bar and scratch-made food,” Antica manager Zach Frye tells the Cleveland Jewish News.

Heritage Steak & Whiskey sets expectations high

There’s no signage, let alone neon. To identify the building housing Heritage Steak & Whiskey, walk to the front door and read what awaits you inside this swanky restaurant at Eton Chagrin Boulevard in Woodmere.

Beneath the eatery’s heraldic, elegant logo at 28869 Chagrin Boulevard is a framed box listing specialty cocktails, salads, appetizers, side dishes and entrées. One cocktail likely to catch your eye is the Bank Statement, a $17 vodka-based concoction also featuring fetching aperitifs. The establishment carries more than 400 whiskies, its most expensive a $350 shot of Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 20 Year.

The steaks – if Doug Petkovic’s restaurant has a theme, it’s steaks – include a 40-ounce Porterhouse for two, served tableside, for $165. And while steak predominates, there are other o erings including salmon, duck and vegan options. This is not a destination for the faint of appetite, taste or pocketbook.

Long-time restaurateur Petkovic has partnered with celebrity chef Michael Symon for 40 years and works out of Mabel’s BBQ, a Symon-identi ed restaurant on East 4th Street in downtown Cleveland. Heritage Steak & Whiskey is a Petkovic solo venture. It’s also a point of pride.

Petkovic and his landlords, Bob and Ezra Stark, consider Heritage Steak & Whiskey a perfect t for Eton Chagrin Boulevard – a “lifestyle destination” owned by Stark Enterprises in Cleveland.

“Heritage Steak & Whiskey has thrived since its opening, showcasing the power of exceptional food, service and a prime

location,” says Ezra Stark, CEO at Stark Enterprises. “Eton Chagrin Boulevard is known for its upscale retailers and exclusive dining, allowing Heritage to blend seamlessly into the unique charm of the area.

“Securing a reservation at Heritage Steak & Whiskey isn’t just about securing a table – it’s about securing a moment of exclusivity and indulgence that enhances the sense of belonging within the community,” adds Stark, who is a congregant at Green Road Synagogue in Beachwood. “It’s about the anticipation of savoring expertly crafted dishes in an ambiance that resonates with the heritage and character of the locale. From the moment you secure your reservation to the moment you step through the door, every detail is meticulously curated to make you feel not just welcome, but truly special.”

AN INSIDE LOOK

Enter Heritage to nd yourself in the lounge area, facing a long, rectangular bar. Small, curvy chairs near the entrance, upholstered in red velvet, ank nooks, encouraging intimate conversation. overhead fixtures. While the basic colors are black and brown, accents of red and white and the occasional deep-blue wall provide variety and warmth.

While there are other steakhouses in the Cleveland area including RED the Steakhouse in Cleveland and Orange, The Capital Grille at Legacy Village in Lyndhurst and Hyde Park Prime Steakhouses in Beachwood and Westlake, Petkovic says he doesn’t view them as competition.

“We just try and control everything that happens in our four walls,” he says. “All I can control is everything that happens here, and we’re just trying to be the best we can be because all those restaurants are very fine.”

Petkovic has long wanted to have a restaurant on Chagrin Boulevard, so in November 2019, when Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar closed at Eton, he turned his attention to that site, he says.

“There are some wonderful restaurants up and down Chagrin Boulevard,” he says. “We just felt there was room for another great restaurant in this area.

“When I saw the opportunity to take over what I call a second-generation space, where there’s infrastructure already inside the restaurant that I wouldn’t have had to pay for, I saw that as a benefit and a bonus,” says Petkovic, who grew up in a hospitality-oriented household as his parents owned the now-closed Fountaine Bleau Party Center in Avon Lake.

Heritage Steak & Whiskey, which Petkovic says ran over time and budget, finally opened in November 2023. Not only did Petkovic relocate the bar, he had new flooring laid down, installed French doors that open to a patio in warmer weather, commissioned local art and subdivided the space into areas geared to a variety of groups. The vibe is contemporary and luxurious but not ostentatious.

“We gutted the bar in the dining room and all the aesthetics of the whole restaurant have been changed. Nothing was here,” he says, pointing to different spots. “If you’re looking at it, it wasn’t here – not the floor, not that wall, not the wall coverings. Not those French doors there. Not this bar. Nothing was here like that. Everything has been replaced, redecorated, re-imagined.” The process wasn’t easy, as Petkovic took over the building and began its transformation at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when he and Symon had to close restaurants, he recalls.

GETTING HERITAGE TOGETHER

Creating Heritage Steak & Whiskey took two years.

“If I could have done it over, I would’ve opened it sooner and made a few other choices,” Petkovic says. “But that’s all hindsight.”

Besides, he had a vision to execute. “Time is money and all of this real estate costs money,” he says. “But I couldn’t get out of my own way. The blue walls are 12 different coats of blue because I wasn’t comfortable or happy with the blue that was going on.”

For its part, Stark Enterprises is delighted, Ezra Stark suggests.

“From the moment you step through the door, you’re enveloped in an atmosphere of luxury and hospitality, where every detail is designed to pamper and delight,” Stark says. “The attentive staff anticipates your every need, guiding you through the menu, which extends beyond steaks to include chicken, salmon, duck ... and more. Every visit promises to be a must-dine experience, perfect for special occasions. The impeccable service, delicious food and inviting ambiance ensure Heritage remains a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike.”

Petkovic and his management team hired and trained each employee, aiming to make sure their guests savor “as high a hospitality experience as you were going to feel anywhere in Northeast Ohio,” says Petkovic, who takes his inspiration from Thomas Keller, owner and chef at The French Laundry, a storied restaurant in California’s Napa Valley. “My motto is, why be good when we can be great?” sj

The design elements they saw on that vacation drove their mission to infuse the essence of the tropical resort, reminiscent of a destination more than a thousand miles away, into Beachwood. Their vision begins to unfold in The Hiatus lobby, where residents are welcomed by a striking two-story living wall, complemented by coastalinspired accents and chic, neutral-toned furnishings.

“(You) walk in and have it feel like you’re at a resort or you’re on vacation –but (you) live here,” Svetlana Kertesz says.

BUILDING AN OASIS

Living at The Hiatus, few apartment oor plans match one another. The reason is the building used to be occupied by Park East Center, a nursing home that closed in 2019.

Kertesz says while a few modi cations have been made to the complex – like walls taken down or added in some areas – they have kept the original con gurations of the rooms. This allows the complex to o er 43 oor plans, ranging from 400 to over 1,200 square feet. Due to those limited alterations, distinctive features such as vaulted ceilings in ground- oor units and ADAcompliant apartments have been made available to tenants.

The complex encourages tenants to nd their oasis in a studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartment with monthly rates ranging from $1,299 to $2,800. It also includes a penthouse apartment measuring around 1,200 square feet and costing about $4,500 and includes a personal patio that leads to the building’s rooftop deck.

The complex’s concrete frame, preserved during renovations, also plays a key role in fostering a sense of tranquility throughout the premises. As Kertesz explains, the complex was constructed during a time when concrete was the preferred material for four-story buildings. That practice shifted over time and modern constructions of similar sizes typically use wooden frames. However, the enduring concrete frame of The Hiatus contributes to enhanced soundproo ng, ensuring a

quieter and more peaceful environment for residents to enjoy.

When designing the apartment units and selecting materials to use, the Kerteszes take a hands-on approach. For The Hiatus, this led them to continue looking for coastal-inspired ambiance through their curated design elements – with carpets evoking soft, beachy vibes and large windows ltering in sunlight. Embracing a palette of soothing neutral tones, each residence invites a sense of relaxation, allowing the serene atmosphere of coastal living to ow throughout the complex.

Further enhancing the units are new appliances, and adding a touch of visual interest are the two-toned cabinetry displayed in some units. Together, these

elements create a harmonious and inviting environment that re ects the timelessness of beachside living.

TRANQUILITY IN A BUSY WORLD

Nestled within Beachwood’s Chagrin Highlands area, the apartment complex is surrounded by some of the city’s most prominent businesses like Eaton Corporation and University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center, making it a compelling location to live for those working nearby. It is also a short drive to the Pinecrest mixed-use development in Orange, downtown Cleveland and Chagrin Falls, in addition to all the o erings on Chagrin Boulevard as well as nearby grocery stores.

The complex was originally set to open

Spring 2024 Jstyle 51 jstylemagazine.com
Below: The Hiatus at 3800 Park East Drive in Beachwood. JstylePhoto / Amanda Koehn

in spring 2023, but because of COVID-19related challenges, construction nished that summer, and residents were able to start moving in during the fall.

Kertesz explains many Hiatus residents are former residents of downtown Cleveland who had been wanting to move to the east side.

“Say they have family that lives on the east side and they live downtown, and they chose downtown because there is something nice and new and exciting, but there was never an option for resort living or luxury apartments on this side of town,” she says. “So now that we have The Hiatus and it’s available, it’s like, ‘well, I want something nice that I can have downtown but without all the hassle that is involved with downtown.’”

At the time of Jstyle’s interview with Kertesz in March, The Hiatus was sitting at about 80% occupancy. Kertesz says she expected that number to reach 100% within the next 30 to 60 days, especially as Match Day recently took place – the annual nationwide event where medical students learned which residency program they will attend.

This is the rst project My Place Group has embarked on outside of Cleveland, says Kertesz, who is Jewish. Yet, this is only the beginning of its expansion endeavors, as evidenced by its recent purchase of the former DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Cleveland East, also on Park East Drive in Beachwood. That location is set to transform into Park Place – a fusion of luxury apartments, a boutique hotel and restaurant, o ce and retail space.

ALL-INCLUSIVE RESORT

From its inception, The Hiatus was conceived as more than just a collection of apartments – it was envisioned as an all-inclusive resort where residents could feel like they’re always on vacation, Kertesz says.

“I think coming out of COVID too – but even without COVID being in place – it’s like, what can we do in terms of helping provide an environment for our residents where they feel like they’re on vacation?” she says. “(And to feel that), all they have to do is just go upstairs or go back inside to their apartment.”

As one navigates through The Hiatus, the breadth of amenities unfolds, adding to the idea of an all-inclusive resort.

“None of the buildings around here have all of the amenities that we o er,” Kertesz says. “They may have some of them, but they won’t have all of the amenities that we o er.”

Included in those amenities is a state-of-the-art media room, along with the conference rooms, which provide professional spaces for residents to conduct business meetings within the complex seamlessly.

Highlighting its resort features are the complex’s outdoor pool area with cabanas, re pits and a grill; a tness center with a Peloton bike; and saunas. If residents venture to the roof, they’ll be able to relax in the top- oor lounge and

rooftop observation deck, taking in the views of Beachwood surrounding it.

For those seeking more entertainment, a fully equipped game room promises fun with vintage-looking arcade games and a billiards table. Pet-friendly features include an o -leash dog park and grooming station. Cyclists might also nd convenience in the bike storage room, which includes a bike repair station.

“There are other luxury-type communities that are in Beachwood or in the neighboring suburbs, and we sat down (and) we brainstormed,” Kertesz adds. “We have the space for it, let’s try to make this as amenity-packed and as much fun as possible. If I were to move here, I want to stay here. We’re not leaving the resort.” sj

Professionals give advice for replacing, updating windows in style

Most homeowners want to have their own air displayed in their homes, whether in terms of design, functionality or decorations. Windows are a large part of a home that can be overlooked, but they can change the layout, design and mood dramatically.

Mike Kovach, president and co-owner of Crooked River Building Supply in Warrensville Heights, says when it comes to updating windows it’s better to replace them entirely rather than refurbishing or xing up.

WONDERING ABOUT WINDOWS?

“We sell Marvin (brand) here, we’re the leading Marvin dealer in Northeast Ohio,” Kovach says. “Marvin is a topof-the-line window. I feel it’s the best window out there, but it depends if somebody’s looking for (a) wood-clad window (or) if someone’s looking for berglass.”

Depending on location, some residents have to get approval from their city ahead of window updates, depending on whether their home is deemed historical or not, and then choose windows accordingly. And, some windows are built to last more so than others, he explains.

“You either keep them or replace them, or you have to replace them because they’re bad,” Kovach says. “Vinyl windows are not made to last, you’d be lucky to get 10 years out of them. That’s not to

say people won’t keep them longer than that.”

Speci cally, sunshine is a large issue for maintaining windows, Kovach says, because sun damage can diminish the quality. However, wood-clad or berglass windows can eliminate these problems.

As far as what’s fashionable, Anne-Marie Colant, digital marketing manager at Universal Windows Direct in Bedford Heights, says the “classic” style is popular in a majority of homes.

“People also tend to love casement-style windows to preserve that mid-century

modern look and feel,” Colant says. “White windows (are) a timeless classic and it goes well with any interior or exterior. (It’s) really fresh and really clean.”

Grid patterns are also a popular new trend, Colant says, for an extra “pizzazz.”

Windows that allow more light in are also popular, she adds, and can increase the property value.

Both Colant and Kovach say it’s better to replace entire windows than doing individual repairs because that’s only a temporary x.

“There’s no sense in putting a Band-Aid on something

just to put o the inevitable,” Colant says. “It’s better to just do the replacement up front and ensure that you’re going to make an improvement to your home that’s going to make lasting improvements.”

Even though it’s better to replace damaged or old windows, Kovach says there are ways to keep windows in good condition to make them last longer.

“Caulking, because every window has caulk on the outside,” Kovach says of the sealing process. “A lot of people think when they caulked 20 years ago, (windows) never need to

be caulked again, but that’s not true. If you start seeing any type of moisture, those are things that need to be addressed right away.”

And, when selecting windows, both Kovach and Colant say the customer’s wishes are a top priority.

“(Universal Direct) is fully customizable,” Colant says. “We want to make your dreams come true (and) we want to give you that dream home. Typically, we do everything we can to try and get that project done and make it work for that homeowner.” sj
