ith this issue of Jstyle Weddings, we’re excited to mark the 15th anniversary of the Cleveland Jewish News’ weddings magazine. That makes this our crystal anniversary, a milestone for which it’s said a watch – signifying time spent together – is a suitable gift. That sounds appropriate to us considering the great degree to which we’re appreciative for the years readers have spent following and supporting this magazine.

Longtime readers know, however, that though this is the 15th year of the magazine, the CJN weddings publication has been around much longer. In fact, when that first magazine published in 2005, Jennifer Slate Grischkan wrote in her editor’s note that it was the 28th annual issue. That makes this the 42nd year for our weddings publication.

For those not in the know, Jstyle Weddings started as an annual pull-out section in the weekly newspaper. Also, for the first two magazines, it was known simply as “Weddings.” It didn’t become Jstyle Weddings until 2007.

Our ceremony was outside on the terrace of the club. As the procession started and the bridal party started walking down the aisle, rain started to fall on our guests, and it started to get heavier and heavier. Everyone was looking around like ‘Uh oh, what do we do?’ Unbeknownst to me, as I walked out with my father and started down the aisle, the clouds parted and the sun came out. The weather suddenly turned from scary to perfect blue skies. I can only credit this moment, this miracle, to my mother, who was watching down on us from heaven. And from that moment on, we had the most beautiful night we could have ever imagined!

Proper wedding planning lays the foundation for a smooth ceremony

T

he question was popped, the ring is on and every necessary social media post was made — now the wedding planning process can commence.

Though poring over stockpiled issues of Jstyle Weddings to learn of recent trends is a worthwhile – and commendable – next step, there are a few key elements to determine before a single flip-through can begin.

To help brides-to-be from getting lost in the boundless maze of planning, Gina Jokilehto-Schigel of Shi Shi Events in Cleveland and Somer Khouri-Bedran of A Charming Fête in North Olmsted offer advice for the various stages of planning to ensure the big day goes off without a hitch.

First steps Before a recently engaged couple scrolls through images of picture-perfect weddings and visits one fairytale-looking venue after

another, they need to set a budget – and that doesn’t mean throwing out a random figure.

It means sitting down and asking whether an open bar is more important than two swans (pillows, holders or real-live swans) serving as ring bearers.

“Set a realistic budget,” Khouri-Bedran says.

“Some brides come to us with pictures of these weddings that are multi-million dollar weddings and they’re on a $50,000 budget.”

Jokilehto-Schigel recommends getting all parties involved with the wedding together to determine what kind of event they want to produce.

“Really, it depends on what type of wedding you’re looking to have,” JokilehtoSchigel says. “You need to sit down with

your families and decide if this is going to be a more intimate affair or if it’s going to be something where the guest list is extensive. ...

Basically, you need to have a sit-down with both sides of the family and decide who’s comfortable contributing what to the budget.”

At the same time a budget is determined, the length of the guest list can start to take shape. Chances are a bride can’t invite everyone her mother wants to the wedding.

As a general rule, JokilehtoSchigel says clients in the Cleveland market should have a minimum budget for food and beverage of $100 per person.

Then multiplying that amount by the number of guests should indicate about half of one’s budget, she says. Once these are set, the couple can go on to the next step of planning, including visiting venues, though JokilehtoSchigel warns a couple must stay mindful of costs.

“You want to keep food and beverage and site rental fee within 50 percent of your total budget,” Jokilehto-Schigel says. “Once you go over that 50 percent there, it’s really hard to make it back with décor, photography, et cetera.”

Half way there Once couples select the venue and all of their vendors, they might think they can coast through to the big event.

Jokilehto-Schigel says be wary of this feeling because there’s still a lot of work to do.

“In the middle of the process, we’re formulating their design plan, we’re curating rentals, we’re going over floral proposals and really shaping and formulating their design,” she says.

In addition, the rehearsal dinner needs to be planned and stationery needs to be designed and proofed. But as soon as everyone’s name is spelled correctly on the invitations and they’re in the hands of the United States Postal Service, then there is time to sit back and enjoy the blissful moments of engagement.

Even if a couple is toward the middle of the planning process, Khouri-Bedran says don’t forget about the budget. Oftentimes, a couple can spend too much at the beginning, maybe even 22

booking a venue cost a little more than originally planned. As the excitement of the engagement settles down, checking the budget is always a safe bet.

“I think, with us, the budget falls in the most important part of the category,” she says. “The budget and the checklist are truly the most important.”

The big day As the big day approaches, both professional planners recommend having a set timeline to keep from going astray. KhouriBedran says to make sure items that were to be done six months before the wedding are done.

“Make sure all your ducks are in a row,” Khouri-Bedran says. “Our biggest thing is not procrastinating, because when you procrastinate, that’s what creates stress. ... The timeline is there for a reason and it’s truly to help plan the things in advance that you can. There are going to be things that will come up – guests that want to come last minute or guests that don’t want to come anymore, whatever it may be – but those last two weeks are to be stress-free from the items that should have been completed.”

Jokilehto-Schigel says to look at the timeline of the day of the event. If a couple can build more time in the day, she says it’ll add more calmness to the experience.

For example, if the photographer says it’ll take two hours for photos, listen to the professional and put that into the timeline. Adding a half hour on top of it wouldn’t hurt either.

If a wedding planner wasn’t hired for the event, JokilehtoSchigel says to make sure tasks have been assigned to trusted bridal party members or family members and know what duties the vendors will carry out before the event begins.

“Who’s going to set up, for example, the kiddush cup, the kipahs, the ketubah — who’s setting up those pieces for the ceremony?” she says.

But even as the stresses of planning a wedding may seem

monumental, both professionals remind us to also enjoy the process.

Spring and summer are great times for outdoor weddings, but with the stress of weather – especially in Northeast Ohio – it might be best to stay inside and bring trees, flowers and greenery with you. Start with a space surrounded by the elements so everything you bring indoors will feed off that environment. Next is your dress. An A-line silhouette with floral embellishments or lace detailing will do the trick. Add a lace veil and drop earring to complete the look. Then, choose a light color – like sky blue or lavender – for your bridesmaids so you really capture that the feel of spring or summer.

The best moment of our wedding was during the ceremony, walking down the grand marble staircase to see my husband waiting for me with tears in his eyes. My mom even had to run up and give him a tissue! We had a really intimate ceremony ‘in the round’ with our guests seated on all sides of the massive chuppah. It was gorgeous and so romantic. Immediately following the ceremony, we enjoyed some quiet time alone before joining our guests for the reception. It was so special to be alone with my husband so we could reflect on the amazing day.

Whether it’s gold leafing that’s actually pressed onto the cake or a painted detail, a swirl or a painted lace applique, I’ve seen a whole lot of metallics coming my way – which is great. It makes a beautiful detail and (is) wonderful in pictures, so I like that idea. The other one I would say is florals. I’ve seen a lot recently where just a really simple cake – you know, a simple all white cake but then a floral arrangement on it that ... really makes a statement in a room.

Plus, it’s rich. It makes it seem luxurious. It could be even a simple detail – a gold-painted border – but because it’s gold, it makes it seem like, ‘wow they really went above and beyond, not only detailwise but costwise.’

I do a lot with the semi-dressed or half-dressed and naked cakes.

Those are still quite popular. I’ve also done quite a bit that are very simple, elegant designs, whether it’s a dotted pattern or just simple string work, to all the way to the elaborate large cakes with all the bling to it, whether it has the rhinestones and silver gold colors to it. (Also), lots of fresh flowers still are very popular with me.

While ceremonies and receptions are joyous occasions, lackluster food can leave a sour taste in guests’ mouths. Fortunately for Northeast Ohio couples, experts from The Cleveland Field Kitchen, based in Novelty, Marigold Catering in Cleveland and Kantina in Cleveland offer advice and share trends they’re noticing at weddings throughout the area.

Things are becoming more and more nontraditional. I think couples want to do things that keep the parents happy but also have things that are really special to them and their friends, like everything from board games to, you know, there’s Harry Potter weddings. And there’s video games in weddings now. ... We’ve actually done weddings where they wanted a karaoke component, so we have a game called Rock Band that was really popular like 10 years ago and has all this popular music in it – but multiple people can sing. Someone can play drums on it. Someone can be playing video game guitar on it, too. It’s a group activity while still fulfilling that we want people (to) sing.

We kind of help facilitate. They want to appeal to all the ages that are at a wedding. We’ll play some Frank Sinatra right next to Bruno Mars. Because at most weddings, there’s people of a lot of ages, we try to appeal to everyone. This year, I don’t think I’ve had a wedding where people have said, ‘We just want ’80s music,’ or ‘We just want the newest music.’

Instead of deciding that sort of eternal debate of do I want a band or a DJ, a big thing for this year is doing both. ... The way we present it when we’re talking with clients is that you really have two options, and when we send our band, you get a DJ and emcee with our band, so it’s included. But you can do two things: You can either have it where the DJ plays to keep the music flowing between sets, so when the band is taking a break, the DJ just keeps it going so there’s constantly music the whole night. Or you set it up so the band kicks it off, they play for a while, and then you switch to a late-night after-party vibe and have a DJ come in and do something that’s maybe a little more club style.
