Rise through the ranks

W

hile those reading this issue of Jstyle Weddings undoubtedly already know Northeast Ohio is a great place to get married, it seems outsiders undervalue what our region has to offer brides and grooms. Cleveland ranked as the 53rd best place to get married in the U.S. out of 182 cities examined by WalletHub, a financial services website that in this analysis sought to identify the country’s cheapest and most convenient wedding locales. WalletHub examined each city across 27 key indicators of wedding-friendliness, ranging from average wedding cost to venues and event spaces per capita to hotel availability. It grouped these factors into three main categories: “cost” rank, “facilities and services” rank and “activities and attractions” rank, in which Cleveland ranked 89th, 43rd and 54th, respectively. Also representing Northeast Ohio was Akron, which made the list at No. 130 and ranked 88th, 109th and 143rd in those three main categories, respectively. Rounding out the Ohio cities on

this list were Cincinnati (ranked 18th), Columbus (ranked 39th) and Toledo (ranked 120th). The top 10 cities aren’t too surprising. Orlando ranked first, followed in order by Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami, San Francisco, Chicago, San Diego, New York City and Austin, Texas. Between Austin and Cleveland, though, many debatable selections exist. You can view the entire list at bit.ly/2jWBC22. Perhaps Northeast Ohio’s overall affordability, its breadth of wedding-related offerings and its dynamic array of attractions – not to mention its charm – are all simply too difficult to quantify. But what we know at Jstyle Weddings is that Greater Cleveland is home to some of the most talented wedding professionals in the business and provides some of the best

amenities you can find anywhere. In fact, we showcase those things in every issue, and this fall 2019 edition is no different. On the pages that follow, you’ll find instructive advice from Northeast Ohio wedding planners and photographers, fashion insight from local clothing and jewelry boutiques, and information on the latest trends from area cake decorators, caterers, florists and entertainment companies. And as in every issue of Jstyle Weddings, we shine a spotlight on a few local Jewish weddings to relive those couples’ big days as well as offer inspiration to brides-to-be planning their nuptials. If statistical analysis by national observers undervalue what our region has to offer in terms of weddings, that’s unfortunate – but perhaps OK in the sense that those treasures can remain some of Northeast Ohioans’ best kept secrets.

earning from the mistakes of others can help brides avoid some last-minute stress for themselves and their bridal parties on their wedding day. “Brides will make their bridal party get up at 6 a.m. when a bride starts hair and makeup,” says Whitney Neidus, a full-service wedding planner who is general manager of StoneWater Golf Club in Highland Heights. “It’s just the whole day, and the bridesmaids want to jump off a bridge. “It’s one of those ‘bridezilla’ things,” she says, adding, “You just want it to be relaxed.” Neidus says brides should limit their focus to three main ingredients as they start planning their wedding day: food, bar service and music. “Nobody remembers your beautiful centerpieces,” she says. “Those are the three things I would tend to focus on.” In addition, she recommends contracting for an open bar rather than

PLANNING by consumption of drinks. It leads to less sticker shock among the parents of the bride, or whoever is footing the bill. Planning menus with mass appeal makes things easier for guests. “You can go crazy, but just make sure there’s a wide array of things if you’re going to do that,” Neidus says. Yitty Dessler, owner of Elegance on Loan in Beachwood, says brides need to choose their vendors carefully. “There are, in this city, competent planners who don’t create more hoopla,” she says. “As far as planning out that day to be a relaxed day and getting the right people on board, (there are options) such as having the right hair and makeup people that are not attitude-y and keeping it relaxed, having a director that’s right there to help you, to be your person and keep everybody calm so a lot of the hysteria of the day is taken care of.” Neidus says at the rehearsal, it’s not uncommon for brides to arrive without a plan for the processional. “You need to know who’s walking down the aisle,” she says. “They’re always having to write it out two seconds before.” Neidus advises having a backup plan in case of bad weather, right down to the shoes. She advises in addition to heels, which can get mired in the mud in a rainfall, to bring a pair of flats just in case. Brides need to plan for their own transportation from the event location. As the last to leave, it may be that the hotel limo isn’t prepared for that final late-night or early-morning run. Neidus says she has called an Uber for a bride and groom who were stranded. Blended families can also pose challenges to brides, Neidus says. “The more organized the family dynamics are, the smoother it will be for the bride,” she says, adding that tastings – which are generally designed for four people – can be particularly tricky when there are more than four involved. “Tastings are always interesting with blended families that don’t get along. I find myself being like a psychiatrist. I have to put out fires.” Destination weddings might be something to consider for those whose family dynamics are particularly fraught, Neidus says. “You either have to include all the key planners in the planning or nobody in the planning.” 16

Above: Whitney Neidus of StoneWater Golf Club recommends making provisions for all sorts of weather. Below: Yitty Dessler, of Elegance on Loan, recommends having food – like ice pops – available during the day of the wedding. Genevieve Nisly Photography / Elegance on Loan

She recommends the bride and groom plan their wedding with financial assistance but not personal assistance from family members. “I like meeting the parents, but sometimes when they’re too involved, sometimes the bride and groom get super-stressed.” There are some simple ways to keeping stress to a minimum. “Planning nice little gifts and fun things, and having food around for everybody,” Dessler says. “Those are the little things that just make the day easier. I always make sure that we have nice platters of food and pastries that are not messy and things like that so that everybody’s happy.” Calling a meeting the day of the wedding so that the wedding party is aware of the timing

and plan can help make everything run more smoothly, Dessler says. “I always call a meeting in the afternoon with everybody,” she says. “Getting the different parties together a few hours ahead of the ceremony and … including the entire wedding party in what’s going to happen that night is very, very helpful.” On the week or day of the wedding, sometimes unexpected events occur. “I always say if something’s gotta happen, we pray that it happens two days before the wedding, not the day of the wedding,“ says Dessler, acknowledging the latter does in fact happen. “Being able to deal with them in a calm fashion, that’s really the name of the game.” js jstylemagazine.com

Our wedding was a true fairy tale. We had planned for an outdoor wedding all along, and a couple of days before, when the rain percentage continuously increased, we decided to make the call to move it inside. This was the best decision we could have made. The most amazing moment was our first look, finally seeing each other dressed and ready for our ceremony, and immediately after, we saw the ceremony set-up for the first time. It was a true fairy tale and an absolute work of art! – Amanda

HOTEL HAPPINESS

Hotel happiness

By Jessica Simon Brides and grooms are always looking for the next thing that will set their wedding apart. What if going back to the basics and choosing a hotel with a beautiful ballroom and yummy food is the answer? We talked last year about tradition coming back with the influence of the royal wedding (bit.ly/2NjzJgs), so embrace this trend and find your Cinderella spot. Dress yourself in a ball gown to feel like a princess and add diamond earrings, necklaces and headpieces to enhance the royal effect. Meet your husbandto-be at the end of the aisle as he wears a classic black tux to complete the timeless feel.

BREWERY BLISS

Brewery bliss By Jessica Simon In Northeast Ohio, breweries are popping up everywhere and many have cozy spaces that are perfect for an intimate winter wedding. Plus, they have great beer. Wear a headto-toe lace dress to capture the loving feel your wedding will emanate and add a furry shawl to keep warm and look stylish on your big day. Let your bridesmaids dress in wintry colors in any style to keep with the casual and relaxed feel of the space, and allow your man to dress down in a sport coat and slacks rather than a full suit.

GREENHOUSE GALA

Greenhouse gala By Jessica Simon Winter is coming, which means the end of lush greenery as the backdrop for your wedding. Or does it? Your dreams of a light, summer tulle wedding gown will come to life when you bring the greenery inside to create your own romantic “outdoor” setting. Use the abundance of plants already in a greenhouse or botanical garden and then add your own special touch with the chuppah or table décor. Have your groom in a soft-colored suit so as not to overpower the rich surroundings.

Bountiful beauty By Ally Benjamin

BeautyCounter

A bride wants to feel and look great on her wedding day. Experts from BeautyCounter in Beachwood and Salon Lofts in Mayfield Heights suggest modern brides achieve that goal by going with a natural – but enhanced – look.

You have to start with good skincare to get that flawless look. Number two, practice before the day of (the wedding). The big thing is if you’re going to go with a bold eye, you don’t want a bold lip at the same time. Most people will recommend for the bride to go with a nicer eye and (go) low key on the lips. You need to go a little darker than you normally would because you want it to show up in pictures.

Paul Orlandi

A lot of what I seem to be seeing is textured waves. I’m seeing a lot of more simple, clean styles, like low ponytails – maybe with a bow in the back. Or, the half-up, half-down is always in. ... Brides aren’t going for this ‘whole different woman’ look for this one day. It’s still their look, it’s just maybe a little longer, a little fresher, fuller, more done-looking. It will be timeless because it will look like them 10, 20 (or) 30 years later. They can look at it and say, ‘Yeah, that’s me.’

SWEETS

Sweet slices By Ed Carroll Given its historical context, “Let them eat cake” isn’t a quote that can be applied to weddings. But in a literal sense, the bride and groom often welcome all who witness them join in matrimony to eat their celebratory cake. Modern weddings aren’t required to have a cake – think cupcake towers or doughnut walls – but the cake is still the most common and preferred choice of marrying couples. Experts from Executive Caterers at Landerhaven in Mayfield Heights, Archie’s Hough Bakery in Beachwood and Luna Bakery & Café in Moreland Hills and Cleveland Heights share the scoop on trends they’re seeing relate to wedding sweets.

Executive Caterers at Landerhaven We have gotten a lot of champagne-flavored cakes, which is awesome, either with a strawberry filling or peach. We’ve gotten a lot of champagne and peach. It’s really good and perfect for the summer. ... People are definitely shying away from fondant. Buttercream is king at the moment.

– Sarah Keplinger, pastry chef, Executive Caterers at Landerhaven

Brynn Keefe / Luna Bakery & Café

I think the biggest trend we at Luna see is people want their wedding and their cake to be them. They don’t want their friend’s cake, they don’t want to have their friend’s wedding that they just went to last month. They want everything to be personal to them.

FOOD

SWEETS Our white cake is our traditional. That’s our No. 1 flavor, 85% of customers want white – all white. Sometimes they may change up and do most of it white and then they’ll do (another) flavor, then they may want raspberry or yellow.

FOOD

CATERING

Craveable catering By Becky Raspe After the wedding planning hype has subsided and everyone has returned home after the parties, there are few things that will stick in a wedding attendee’s mind more than the food they ate. With that in mind, professionals from Bon Appetit Catering in Cleveland, Bonnie Davis Catering in Beachwood, and 56 Kitchen & Catering in Solon and Mayfield Heights shared the ways couples should be serving meals and setting their wedding catering apart. This season, small plates are a big hit with couples.

56 Kitchen & Catering Provenance at the Cleveland Museum of Art / Bon Appetit Catering

We’re seeing that people are doing more untraditional styles with their weddings, like heavy hors d’ouerves or small plates. This encourages guests to mix and mingle with each other through the evening. ... I am seeing creativity in the hors d’ouerves, the desserts and the late-night snack. We’re seeing these portable carts, so the guests don’t have to leave the dance floor. We’ll also see more moving away from the traditional three-course dinner to cut dinner service time down to spend more time with guests. – Elizabeth Kaufman, director of catering sales, Bon Appetit Catering Pollack Studios / Bonnie Davis Catering

People like to have a lot of hors d’oeuvres, especially passing ones. ... When I do passing options, I do a lot of things on sticks that are bite-sized, like sushi and desserts. It’s about taking a bite here and another there. ... The focus on hors d’oeuvres is because people are talking and mingling more, instead of just sitting at the table. As for the passing options, people like when food is brought to them instead of getting it themselves. – Bonnie Davis, owner, Bonnie Davis Catering

Above: Buffet set up with penne pasta and marinara and pesto sauces. Below: Local endive, with a red grape, whipped feta and watermelon relish. Right: Dessert display with chocolate-dipped fruit, including strawberries.

Though there is always a need for traditional Jewish catering, we’re getting a lot of requests for off-site catering through our food truck. This is due to the popularity of rustic, offthe-grid wedding venues, like barns. But, we bring the truck and can turn anything into a cool venue. There is a big demand for that experience. ... Overall, the biggest change is the quality of the food. They want something better. Couples want to stay away from that traditional chicken, beef or fish option. They want food that you’d consider more casual, but with upscale ingredients. They want it to be more of an occasion. – Izzy Schachner, co-owner, 56 Kitchen & Catering

Celebration locations By Ed Carroll Even if a couple doesn’t necessarily long for a “storybook wedding,” they assuredly want their ceremony to be memorable – and often, that starts with the setting. Whether the couple prefers a more traditional elegance or to have their reception in an unexpected place, Northeast Ohio has no shortage of unique locations. Experts from The Westin Cleveland Downtown in Cleveland, LaCentre Conference and Banquet Facility in Westlake, ThornCreek Winery in Aurora, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in Cleveland, The Mohicans in Glenmont and the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Cleveland East Beachwood in Beachwood discussed what makes their venues the place to be for wedings.

(What’s popular now is) lighting, different lighting, gobos (stencils that look like an image when light is projected through them), logos on the wall, images being cast and displayed onto wedding cakes. Those kinds of things are starting to become more and more popular, and brides and grooms are asking more about that. ... We can accommodate all of that (at LaCentre).

Not many people can say they’ve been to a wedding inside of a zoo, so the fact that we have Stillwater Place in the heart of the zoo is something we’re very proud of. ... We have the different animal interactions (and) we give our couples a very unique backdrop. We’re able to give their friends and family a really good feeling of nostalgia – a lot of people have nice childhood memories or family memories of the zoo.

VENUES Everybody wants to be unique. You still have the traditional – and actually, that’s becoming unique in some ways because everyone wants something a little bit different, which is great. The nice thing about having the space we have is we can make things different for people. I’ve worked at properties where (the space) is all you have to work with, you don’t have a choice. Here, you have a choice.

What I think is special about ThornCreek is it can be tailored to each bride and groom because the venue is very focused on heavy trees and flowers. … The bride and groom can choose to add to that or let the landscape be the predominant focus. ... It can be as casual as someone wants or as elegant as someone wants.

Bridal suites are frequent requests. A lot of (brides) ask to customize their wedding package to meet their needs. If they are looking to kind of mix and match to create a package that is more tailored to their likes and what they’re looking for, so that it’s not cookie-cutter, with everybody being the same, (there’s a lot of personalization).

PHOTOGRAPHERS

Photo focus By Alyssa Schmitt Finding the right wedding photographer is a unique challenge for a couple. Unlike with the other vendors hired for a wedding, the couple – to a certain extent – won’t know what they’ve invested in until the photos are printed weeks after the ceremony. That means careful research and being selective – both in artistic style and personal demeanor – are important when choosing the photographer. Local photographers from Lindsey Beckwith Photography in Cleveland, Mystic Image Cinema and Photography in Broadview Heights and Imagine It Photography in Cleveland lend some advice for couples searching to capture their big day.

Mystic Image Cinema and Photography

Imagine It Photography

One of the things to consider is the number of hours (a couple) will need a photographer. A lot of photographers are hourly, so they’re like eight or 10 or 12 (hours). But if you want all-day coverage – getting-ready shots all the way until late in the reception, (or) if you’re doing a sparkler send-off or something like that – you may need more than that, so you may want to look for a photographer that includes all-day coverage or that you can add the additional hours. – Stephanie Uptmor, owner, Imagine It Photography

Lindsey Beckwith Photography

When you’re looking for a photographer, basically make sure that you review a lot of their work. ... You want to look at a complete wedding, not just a couple of pictures on their Instagram or on their website because you want to see how they can handle different types of lighting situations. – Lindsey Beckwith, owner, Lindsey Beckwith Photography

Make sure you connect with your photographer in personality and in style. ... If you feel like you can trust this person, more likely than not, you will feel much more comfortable on the day of, so when they ask you to do certain poses or do certain things, there’s not that resistance. With resistance comes odd looks on people’s faces. The more trust, the more confidence, the better photos. – Lana Perhacs, owner, Mystic Image Cinema and Photography

FLORAL

Festive floral By Becky Raspe Even though the entire wedding ceremony and reception can be customized down to the napkin, there are few things that can be as creative and personal as the floral arrangements. From table settings and ceremony adornments to the flowers in a bride’s hair, floral selections can provide a personal touch to just about anything. As the season transitions to fall and winter, professionals at Guilford Floral Artistry in Cleveland Heights, PF Designs in South Euclid and Pieter Bouterse Studio in Warrensville Heights offer a bouquet of advice. Brides always love big focal flowers that are absolutely beautiful and the show-stoppers of an arrangement. But, we are seeing a trend toward more green foliage, as well as more seasonal and locally grown items. This stems from a desire to be more environmentally responsible and the high prices of out-of-season flowers, so we love it when brides are open to seasonal picks. We’re also seeing increased demand for a natural, garden-style aesthetic.

– Tonya Passarelli, partner, Guilford Floral Artistry

Lea Marie Photogtaphy / Guilford Floral Artistry

Aster and Olive Photography / Pieter Bouterse Studio

For the fall and upcoming seasons, I am noticing a trend within our inquiries toward a naturalistic style. I see couples going to colors that live somewhere between the aubergine and the strong contrast that greens and oranges give to that. Brides are also going toward flowers they don’t necessarily know what they are. With that, I’m seeing a lot of textures with different grasses. ... I find that dahlias are hotter than they’ve been in years. Brides are moving away from the regular hybrid roses and are going toward garden roses. They like the fragrance and individuality.

ENTERTAINMENT

Enjoy the entertainment By Ally Benjamin While planning a wedding, the entertainment options can be overwhelming. Entertainment companies such as Cleveland Music Group in Valley View and Rock The House Entertainment Group in Oakwood Village aim to help the bride and groom make their selections, and in the end, leave them and their guests with big smiles and perhaps dancing-induced sore feet.

Making the Moment Photography / CLE Music Group

People understand that when they book a DJ, especially nowadays with iTunes and Spotify and cloud-based software, there shouldn’t be a reason why a DJ should ever not be able to play everything. With a band, I think couples are aware that this band has their routines, they have their favorites, they have the dance floor fillers. Couples who book bands generally are a little bit more open to the idea of saying ‘just do what you do.’ – Scott Jones, president and lead DJ/MC, Cleveland Music Group

We have an in-house band, Rock The House LIVE! We’re excited to see that having a live band and a DJ combo for weddings is trending. That is one of my favorite things because you can create unique sets throughout the night. For instance, you can have the band kick things off with an oldies set, which is a great time to get grandparents and older family members up and dancing. Then, the band can take a break and the DJ can come on with a different style of set, which allows the couple to really customize their wedding and make it memorable. – Stephanie Rose, marketing manager, Rock The House Entertainment Group
