Skip the champagne toast. Having been an avid champagne connoisseur back in the day, I can assure you almost no one drinks that little toaster that’s poured for everyone. I used to make my way around the table finishing off everyone’s champagne castaways. Have people toast with their drink of choice (after all, it’s their choice for a reason), and have champagne available at the bar for those party-girls who do want a little bubbly. You’d be surprised how much sparkling wine adds to the bill. Use flowers that are in season and readily available. Imagine the cost for shipping a rare orchid halfway around the country. Get my drift? Memorable touches. Save your budget for those little extra touches, the ones that will wow your guests. Don’t spend thousands on programs to describe Jewish wedding traditions and the bridal party. Instead use that money for parting gifts or other things that will get your guests excited. People remember party favors, not hand-calligraphied place cards or programs on killer paper. When it comes to the chupah, there is no need to get married under $12,000 worth of flowers. Create a meaningful space with crystal and candlelight. Go with a non-traditional photographer – meaning a photographer who doesn’t specialize in weddings. You may be happy with her innovative and novel takes on conventional wedding photos. Also, opt out of the expensive book options. You can make fabulous books online now for a fraction of the cost. Just make sure that it states in your contract you get full rights to the original electronic files. Gotta have a designer dress? Buy your dress at a trunk show and snag up to 12% off! Or have a dressmaker copy it. You have to be brave, but I’ve seen it done and no one knew but the bride and her trusted confidant.
don’ts: Don’t have regrets. If ever there is a day to do what you want, it’s this one. Who says you need a five-layer fondant cake covered in crystallized flowers? Go for cupcakes if you want! I’m not a fan of the dummy cake that then gets rushed out of sight and cut in the back, but it does save money and no one will know. Don’t use low-shelf liquor. It’s a red-flag that you’ve gone budget. Heaven forbid you serve Smirnoff at your wedding. Instead, head for a country club where top-shelf is standard and you don’t have to pay extra to upgrade the bar. Don’t over-do. Think beyond traditional massive flower arrangements everywhere. Use creative touches with items that mean something to you. Instead of a table covered with flowers during the cocktail hour, cover a table with antique picture frames filled with wedding photos of grandparents and family. This saves money and is a nice keepsake after the wedding. Keep quiet. The second someone hears it’s for your big day, the price doubles when booking hair and makeup. Ask stylists their prices before you tell them it’s your wedding. Do. Not. Go. Buffet. You do not want a line of people clad in tuxedos and couture to get chicken. Not cool. One last piece of advice comes straight from my grandmother, who was happily married for 56 years, and my fiancé’s grandmother, married for 44. They both always reminded us that it’s what comes after the wedding that counts. So, keep your planning in perspective! n

She now works in alumni relations for Case Western Reserve University, while Jeff is a resident in family medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center. Jeff, who previously worked in software development, decided in his late 30s to fulfill a lifelong dream to become a doctor. Ten days after he and Kim met on JDate, he moved to Maine to start medical school, necessitating a long-distance relationship. While JDate brought all the couples together, Kim notes she had been on a number of dating sites for several years to no avail. Her parents would often tell her about daughters of their friends who met someone on JDate. “I said to my dad: ‘I’ve wasted too much money on JDate,’” says Kim. “I’m not doing it again. He responded, ‘I’ll pay for it.’” Reluctantly, she agreed to try again. He mailed her $150 for “JDate, match.com, desperate.com. As long as you find Mr. Right, I’ll be fine,” Kim recalls her father saying. Within a couple of weeks of returning to JDate, Kim met Jeff. From his photo, she was skeptical. “He looked like an eye doctor, very stuffy. He was wearing a suit in his photo.”

But on their first date on a midweek night at Harvard Square, she waved away the group of friends she had arranged to rescue her if the need arose. On their next date that weekend, she shopped with him for the car he would use at medical school. Jeff decided during the car shopping that he would marry her. Kim was not as sure initially, but after spending her weekends visiting Jeff, she moved to Maine. By the summer of 2007, even before Jeff had proposed, Kim and Kevin had a “very tactical conversation” about who would get married when. Kim picked Maine for her wedding because that’s where she and Jeff were living at the time, she says. “And I wanted to plan the wedding, not my parents.” Jeff actually surprised Kim that September with his proposal on a beach in Maine, on a weekend when her parents and Kevin and Marissa were visiting. Everyone knew the plan but Kim. “They hung back as Jeff and I walked to the beach, beyond a sand dune, where he proposed. We were out of sight. As we walked back, they all had their cameras out, taking pictures.” With the wedding dates only two-and-a-half months apart, Bonnie Cole says planning the guest lists for both of her children’s nuptials “was very delicate. We did not want to obligate friends and family to the expense of coming to two weddings out of town so close together.” Both Kim and Kevin had serious relationships with non-Jews in the past, so Bonnie and Mike, members of The Temple-Tifereth Israel, were thrilled when their children subscribed to JDate, Bonnie says. “The fact that both Kim and Kevin found true love on JDate and met their spouses only nine days apart, and that they were from the same small suburb, went to the same synagogue, same elementary and high school, and that their parents live within a mile of each other was the ultimate in Jewish geography.” Whether it was fate or karma or simply a small world, the three interconnected Sharon-Shaker marriages have given Bonnie Cole pause. “I felt there was something more than ‘coincidence’ at work here, but I don’t know what.” The poets call it love, life’s sweet mystery.n

Bedecked with gold jewelry and fresh flowers, she and her groom Michael Doliveck sat on a throne constructed just for them, as dancers and traditional musicians performed. While every bride feels like a princess at her wedding, Maryam actually is one. She was born and raised a princess in Bali, Indonesia. Her grandmother was the daughter of the island’s king, but the monarchy fell in the early 1900s. Maryam’s grandmother wanted to pass on the family traditions: Maryam was selected to live in the palace and learn the royal dances, songs and rituals. So, when the Balinese princess married Michael, the nice Jewish boy from Cleveland, the day was declared a government holiday. Michael even had to negotiate a sizeable dowry for his bride as part of the ritual. “The wedding in Bali was unbelievable,” says Michael’s mother Michele Doliveck. She and her husband David of Aurora were among the 40-some Western guests present at the royal wedding. Michele arrived with no idea what she was going to wear. “There were dressers, and they did our hair and makeup,” she says. Clothes, jewelry 42

ing in L.A., and working as an art professor, sculptor and photographer. She was 35, living in Cambria, four hours north, and owned her own spa. When Michael and some friends planned a camping trip to Big Sur, they stopped to meet his e-friends. Michael liked Maryam right away, he says. He had traveled widely around Indonesia and was eager to pursue this beautiful and unassuming woman from Bali. The relationship didn’t click for Maryam until later, when she came to L.A. and got to know Michael better. “We just got along so well,” recalls Michael. “She’s so genuine.” He connected to her love of the outdoors, travel and animals, and he was particularly drawn to her interest in spirituality, religion and culture.
sacred changes Maryam grew up with two religions: her grandmother was Balinese Hindu, a religion distinct to the island, and her grandfather was a Muslim. While the Jewish traditions instilled in Michael from his parents and grandparents are his foundation, he also enjoys studying Buddhism and other Indonesian religions. The more Maryam learned about Judaism from Michael and his friends, the more it made sense, she says. She sees many similarities between Islam and Judaism. “I decided to embrace Judaism. A lot of it spoke to me,” she says. Montefiore chaplain Rabbi Joel Chazin has a history with the family since the days when Michele volunteered at the home. He had an easy friendship with Michael. “I was eager to see him get married to a Jewish girl,” says Chazin, “and ultimately, it did happen.” After Chazin met Maryam, he agreed to oversee her conversion to Judaism. As Maryam studied for her conversion, Michael studied along with her. “It was nice to go back and learn things about Judaism,” he says.
In August, Maryam and Michael stood under the chupah for a traditional Jewish ceremony with Cleveland’s Rabbi Joel Chazin.

In Germany, Jews imitated their neighbors’ braided breads, called berches, meaning intertwined arms. Jews worked luscious challah dough into 12 knobs to represent the 12 tribes of Israel. Jewish bakers took their customs with them as they migrated to Poland, Lithuania and, of course, to America.
We still welcome the holidays with challah: round for Rosh
Hashanah and on Yom Kippur, a hand shape to indicate we are in God’s hand or a dove of peace. The measure of a bride was once her ability to bake bread. Today, couples can measure up with the right baking pans and family recipes that exude a heavenly aroma from the kitchen. It’s a wonderful way to start Jewish traditions that the couple can someday share with their children and grandchildren.

Lauren’s father Marvin Sable is a graphic designer, so he created all his daughter’s wedding stationery, from save-the-date cards to programs to hotel bag inserts. Lauren, 33, enjoyed working with her father to perfect the black-and-white themed stationery. The Beachwood resident believes the back-and-forth with her dad gave the materials the personal touch an outside source wouldn’t have been able to produce. Lauren, a freelance writer and marketing

Shelley and Mike Magden walked the aisle with Cody, a 10-year-old yellow lab, during their July nuptials. Along with family and friends, the ceremony had another special guest – the Magdens’ 10-year-old yellow lab Cody. Not only was the dog at the wedding at Thorncreek Winery, he was “walked down the aisle” by the
leash as they walked to the waiting chupah. The furry wedding party member took his place at the front of the crowd to watch the happy event. “People kept asking us if the dog was (going to be) in the wedding,” Shelley says with a laugh. “It was still a surprise for everyone when they

T
he Foglietti Natural Vector Facelift Technigue® is a method of tightening the face in a manner that gives the most natural and relaxed appearance after surgery. This facelift technique tightens the facial tissue under the skin in multiple directions or vectors. The tissue is then returned to its original more youthful position.
