The time I have spent with this program has probably been the most beneficial time of my life. I have learned to take control of my eating habits and experience the feeling of peace on a daily basis. Ellen W. -Beachwood, OH

I was on of the biggest junk food eaters, but after 8 sessions I have learned to eat well and have lost 20 pounds. Gloria S. -Solon, OH

Iʼm so excited to share that I have lost 35 pounds and am still going strong. I have told all my fellow nurses about your great program. Carol A. -Stow, OH

Lou’s Story: It all started when I was 6 years old – no really – it did. I was put on my first diet at age 6, thus began my 40-year history of yo-yo dieting, binging and starving and – even when on a diet – some very inadvisable food choices. I tried the good, the bad and the UGLY. Of course, everything worked. I did lose weight each time – then promptly regained it and added some. Once I figured out that the dieting wasn’t working (by that time I had a list of 15 different ones I could remember being on), I had to begin the process of finding out why. I finally got the help I needed. I only wish I had known about The Hungry Heart program and could have used it. Things would have gone much smoother and better if I had all the Beachwood Counselor tools and resources of the Hungry Heart program where clients systematically become successful and make lifestyle changes in the first few sessions because they learn more in those few sessions than I was able to in years – no – decades. I did lose 92 pounds and have now kept it off for more than 5 years. In all those 40 years of dieting, that never happened. I not only lost weight, but also vastly improved my overall health and specifically lowered my blood pressure, my bad cholesterol and my lipids. I no longer need medication of any sort for my arthritis and have no more migraine headaches or sleep apnea. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with clients to enable them to achieve a healthy, happy lifestyle. We can do this together. I’ll be with you every step of the way on the road to a happier, healthier you.

In November, I became engaged to my boyfriend of nearly three years. The planning of jstyle WEDDINGS coincided with the planning of my own wedding, making the issue especially meaningful for me. Each gown we selected for inclusion in the magazine was a dress I was seeing through the eyes of a bride, every Jewish tradition was something I wanted to know more about, each “love story” echoed my excitement for my own big day this spring. I hope you will be as thrilled with the issue as I was putting it together. You’ll find ideas you may not have thought of for planning a wedding, from buying special bridal party gifts to writing the perfect thank-you note to serving tasty, healthy fare at the reception. But most important, you’ll find the magazine is filled with heartwarming local stories of reunions, romance, adventure, second chances and above all else, love. – Janet Dery

are included.

Feb. 20:

Meet with florist Steven Tokar. He works with our budget, understands what I want, and suggests using gardenias as my bouquet. I’m so excited!

March 7:

Both moms and I visit the jewelry maker Mira to look at earrings for the wedding. Find beautiful teardrop Swarovski crystal earrings, which Mira adjusts to make longer.

Andy and I leave for our vacation in Puerto Rico. Once there, Andy takes me to a beachfront restaurant. Bugs start eating me alive. Luckily, it starts to rain, so we go inside and enjoy a great dinner. But Andy really wants to watch the sunset, so I reluctantly go outside after we eat. We walk toward the water as the bugs swarm me. I say, “Here’s your moment. We’re outside. Can we please go back in?” But when I turn to face him, he’s holding a ring and says, “No. It’s actually your moment.” It’s so sweet. We hug and kiss, and then I say, “Please get me off this beach! I’m not sure if I’ll have any legs left!” I end up with 36 bug bites on one leg and 25 on the other. But it’s the best day of my life, bug bites and all.

March 12:

Find beautiful, black lace cocktail dresses at White House | Black Market for the bridesmaids. They’re affordable and can be worn multiple times.

March 15:

Select inexpensive invitations from a member of the B’nai Jeshurun Sisterhood.

Sept. 25:

The Marriott, our first-choice, is booked Labor Day weekend.

March 21:

Oct. 17: Choose Red Line to be our band.

My gown is in! I try it on, and it’s two inches short! Clara, the salesperson, feels bad and says she’ll send it back to the dressmaker. It wasn’t her fault; she wrote the correct length on the tag. Glad I ordered early!

My mom hosts a shower at her house for my friends and family that’s fun and relaxing. Andy and I decide on a Godfather-themed rehearsal dinner at Nido Italia in Little Italy. Iron out details with the InterContinental’s wedding planner. Need to determine where we’re going to take pictures, what recessional music we want, and other details with the band. Aargh! So many decisions.

The bridal party goes to Anthony Vince for manicures and champagne. Marla and I return to the hotel to get ready for the rehearsal dinner. The speeches at our dinner are hilarious, and Andy and I have a great time. We take a limo bus with everyone to La Strada and continue the night. Marla and I leave early to get some beauty sleep.

Sept. 6, 2009:

Wedding day! When we go downstairs to meet Andy, I’m shaking. Once I see him, everything is fine. We take pictures and then head to the bar at Table 45 for a drink. Then off to the ketubah-signing with Rabbi Muller. The wedding ceremony is so personal. The rabbi reads our e-mails about why Andy and I love each other. Mine is funny. Andy’s is surprisingly sweet. I cry. Then Andy and I go to a separate room, relax, drink champagne and tequila (our favorite), eat some food and talk before the reception begins. Later, the hora is crazy! My bustle breaks, so we rig the dress to stay up. My dad actually gets up in the chair. The cake topper and cupcakes are perfect, and the room is amazing! It’s a night I will never forget.

Sept. 7:

Brunch. I’m depressed that the wedding weekend is over. After brunch we return to our apartment. Everything seems surreal. But by the next day, Andy and I are just happy to be married. We look forward to our honeymoon.

Heidi Baumgart of Heidzillas is a bride’s best friend on her big day.

the wedding planner helping hands with all the plans

THE outdoor ceremony was just minutes away from getting underway. The bride and her maids were completing their lastminute primping before walking down the long aisle surrounded by birch trees. Because of a snafu by the groom, Heidi Baumgart was flying through the parking lot in a golf cart to get the wedding programs from her hands to the guests before the ceremony began. As the bride made her way down the aisle and noticed the guests all had programs, she glanced at Baumgart, her wedding planner, and gave her a quick grin. “Guests had no idea it wasn’t going to be that way,” says Baumgart, founder of Heidzillas, a wedding planning company. “It was actually just hilarious and one of those things that if I hadn’t been there, it wouldn’t have gotten done.” Wedding planners are there for brides, grooms and their fami22

lies to ensure that their special day goes exactly as envisioned and most importantly, that the celebrants have fun, says Lynn Audino, a local party and wedding planner. Most wedding planners offer a variety of services, explains Baumgart, ranging from assisting with every planning detail to consulting or coordinating the special day only. Pricing for a wedding planner depends upon which services the bride and groom decide to use. Some planners charge a fee based on the time they spend working on the event, which can range from $25 to $150 an hour. Audino, who charges an hourly or weekly fee depending on the client’s preference, says hiring her to plan an entire wedding costs about $3,600. Using a wedding planner can sometimes save clients up to 10% on goods and services. “You are paying money for a planner but also saving because of his or her experience and relationships with vendors,” Baumgart says.

Baumgart, a newlywed herself, specializes in day-of coordinating. She’ll touch base with vendors usually a week before the wedding to create a schedule for the day and make sure “everyone knows where to be and when.” The big day is often a marathon, involving checking on the florist, pinning boutonnieres, fixing veils and poufing trains, lining up the wedding party and cuing them when to walk, assisting with pictures, and handing out bubbles or rice. And that’s all before the reception even begins. To prepare for the party, Baumgart will set up the site completely, coordinate with the DJ or band, and handle anything else that comes up. Jen Wilen is looking forward to having Baumgart’s help for her upcoming nuptials to Michael Rosenstein on June 13. Wilen hired Baumgart a few months ago to be the day-of coordinator. “I am looking at having the ceremony at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park,” Wilen explains. “They don’t have a staff that will help me set up and clean, so rather than having my mom do that, I wanted to hire somebody who is prepared and knows what to do.” Audino typically works with brides and grooms to plan the details early on. “I start at the beginning to help them select vendors, set up contracts, help word invitations,” she says. In addition, she can do a breakdown of expenses to assist the bride and groom with determining their budget. Months, or even a year later, during the week of the wedding, Audino is “running my butt off to make sure everyone in the fam-

ily is calm so they can have fun. I’m basically their slave for a week,” she says with a laugh. For Shirah and Michael Gottfried’s June 2008 wedding, hiring Audino saved Shirah hours and hours in planning, she says. But it was what Audino did behind the scenes that impressed Gottfried the most. The plan was to have an outdoor ceremony at Quail Hollow, but on the day of the wedding, the weather looked ominous. A lastminute decision to move the ceremony was made by Audino, who spent hours moving chairs and speakers, creating an aisle, and setting up the chupah. Minutes after the ceremony began, it began to pour. “It was the best call I have ever made,” Audino says. “I was so nervous, I didn’t want anyone to be mad, but it all worked out perfectly.” Moving the entire ceremony could have been stressful for the bride and groom, but thanks to Audino, Gottfried wasn’t fazed. “We didn’t have to worry about anything on the day of the wedding,” she says. The best part of having a wedding planner, Gottfried adds, was in the small details, from looking under her chair at the reception to find the comfortable flats she wanted to wear to knowing Audino would arrive that morning with dresses in hand and breakfast for the bridal party. “She organized everything,” Gottfried says. “It was a stress-free day for me and my mom.” n

Carrie and Aaron Saks says pre-wedding discussions with their rabbi were helpful.

CARRIE and Aaron Saks of Twinsburg headed into their premarital sessions with Rabbi Rosette Barron Haim expecting to learn about the wedding ceremony and rituals. Not only were their expectations met, they also appreciated the opportunity to become better acquainted with the rabbi. The Sakses, who wed in July 2008, also learned “things about each other that we normally wouldn’t ask each other or talk about, like who we thought would be responsible for different household chores,” Carrie says. “It was a valuable and interesting experience for us,” Carrie affirms. “It’s a good way as a couple to explore your strengths and potential weaknesses. We would recommend other couples participate in premarital counseling.” So do local wedding officiants. When couples are in the euphoric wedding-planning stage, they often can’t acknowledge that challenges may arise later, says Rabbi Eddie Sukol of The Shul. So in addition to discussing the ceremony, the couple’s family and religious backgrounds, interests and other topics, Sukol points out “red flags” that could indicate a need for counseling down the road. “A number of couples have come back and said it’s been helpful,” the rabbi says. “They got to the point where they knew they were stuck and realized it quicker because they remembered our (premarital) conversations.” Red flags include having the same argument repeatedly without reaching a resolution, financial problems, pressure from in24

laws, infertility challenges that can pull a couple apart, major illness, or if one partner “changes the rules of the marriage.” Although it’s important to acknowledge the possibility of marital strife and to equip couples with tools to fix it, the primary focus is on building a successful marriage from the start. “A successful marriage isn’t the one that lasts a long time,” Sukol says. “We all know people who have been married a long time and are miserable – and that’s no way to live.” Instead, Sukol defines a successful marriage as one in which the husband and wife continue to grow as individuals and as a couple while supporting each other and keeping their love alive. Sukol bases some of his discussion topics on Prepare-Enrich, a comprehensive couples’ inventory that many clergy use in premarital counseling sessions. The written survey focuses on communication, conflict resolution and other issues. Because many couples “find paper and pencils off-putting,” Sukol addresses some of the ideas without using the actual survey. Among the topics Sukol discusses with couples are how they met, how long they dated, whether either partner had been married before, their family backgrounds, whether they want children, their intended level of religious observance and communication. “Everything comes down to all the different ways that couples communicate – reaching out to each other verbally or nonverbally, intimately,” he says. “It could be a look across the room that says, ‘I can’t take this party anymore.’” Haim covers the same relationship topics. She asks couples to complete a premarital inventory individually and to discuss it

together before sending it to her. Among other things, the survey asks the couple about themselves, their religious observance, their parents’ marriages and their childhoods. “It tells us if they have good models or if we need to change the tape,” Haim says. Sections require attaching adjectives to themselves, parents and significant others. “It’s an opportunity to know qualities that are important to them,” she says. The rabbi discusses how the couple will handle the responsibilities of children, finances, jobs and maintaining a home. She also encourages the couple to embrace their religion. “Judaism has such beautiful rituals to enhance the relationship, and this is their opportunity to create the vision of how they want Judaism to be perpetuated in their home.” Haim’s pre-wedding meetings also encourage the couple to have an active role in making their ceremony meaningful. The rabbi and couple discuss every ritual and object – including wedding bands, chupah, ketubah, kipot, two Kiddush cups, or wrapping the couple in a tallit for sheva brachot. Carrie and Aaron Saks say their sessions with Haim confirmed that marriage was the right choice. “We learned that we communicate well and our individual strengths complement our weaknesses,” Carrie says.n

THERE was nothing ordinary about Nicole and Bobby Weiss’s wedding last December. The Cleveland couple traveled to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, where they exchanged vows with sand under their feet and the Pacific Ocean waving in the background. The bride’s gorgeous bodyhugging jersey knit wedding gown was not purchased at a local bridal shop, but was ordered online. “When you plan a beach wedding, you want an elegant, simple dress that is easy to move in, rather than a fussy, beaded, silk gown with a long train,” says Weiss, who joined her groom under the chupah barefoot. “I visited all the local bridal shops but did not even come close to finding the gown I had in mind.” At her mother’s suggestion, Weiss turned to the Internet. She typed “white wedding dress” into the search engine and was overwhelmed with the number of selections that appeared on the screen. “There were so many options, that I had to narrow my search,” she Wearing a gown she purchased online, Nicole Weiss and her father Richard says. Weiss then Googled “white formal gown” and, within minutes had found “her dress” on the Neiman Marcus website. However, the Kay Unger dress was no longer available at that store, so Weiss Googled the manufacturer. “I was able to locate the gown at a Nordstrom in Madison, Wisc., in a size 6, but I’m a size 2,” she says. Weiss checked the manufacturer’s Web reviews and read that Kay Unger gowns run small. “I crossed my fingers and ordered the dress, and it fit me perfectly,” she says. “All I needed to do was hem it, and I was ready for my wedding.” Weiss was not looking for a bargain, but she got one. The total cost of the dress, including shipping and tax, was $375. “I learned not to limit my search to ‘bridal dress’; the cost drops about $1,000 because the user market is so different,” she says. Although Weiss got lucky with her online purchase, she advises ordering several gowns at one time and then choosing the best one. The color on screen can be different from the color of the

gazpacho or guacamole, a goat cheese and beet appetizer, miniature Caesar salad in a Parmesan crisp cup, and rice paper rolls filled with Asian veggies or mango. “These sensational crowdpleasers are so satisfying and eye-appealing, no one misses the greasy fried egg rolls or baked salami,” says Goldberg. Caterer Marlene Leitson, owner of Café 56, also has been asked to lighten her appetizer fare. “I don’t mind serving less during the reception so guests will have more room for dinner,” she says. Among the healthier appetizer selections offered at Café 56 are Israeli salad, stuffed grape leaves, fruit kabobs, and boiled red skin potatoes wrapped with a thin slice of smoked salmon. “My vegetarian chopped liver and mock crab cakes are a safe bet for everyone, no matter their waistline,” adds Leitson. “When I have a pasta bar, I feature whole-wheat pasta as an alternative.”

Leitson also likes to stick with skewers for heart-healthy appetizers. “Instead of frying pieces of chicken, meat or fish, I can bake them in a light sauce and put them on a stick,” she says. “They are fun to eat and won’t add the pounds.” Although the calorie count for healthier appetizers might be lower, the cost isn’t. “Often preparing vegetable and lo-cal appetizers is more time-consuming for our kitchen help,” says Ferrara. “We work on presentation so that the table looks like a showpiece.” Being on a strict diet when you attend a festive occasion can be very hard, admits Leitson. “It’s all about portion control,” she says. “Limit yourself to a few delicious items, and know that a great dinner is waiting for you after the cocktail hour. And if all else fails, you can face the spandex and treadmill tomorrow.”n

“TRADITION, Tradition,” sings Tevye the milkman in “Fiddler on the Roof.” And nowhere is Jewish tradition more lovingly followed than during the marriage ceremony. The following traditions and customs are practiced by Jews around the world. Whether a Jewish couple is getting married at the seashore, in a synagogue or in a hotel, there will be a ketubah signing, chupah, circling of the bride and groom, tallit wrapping, and the breaking of the glass. After the hoopla under the chupah, the celebration begins. Knishes anyone?

The signing of the ketubah occurs just prior to the marriage ceremony. Below, chupahs represent the couple’s first “home.” This one was designed by Cleveland-based L.A. Design Florist. PHOTO / KURT SHAFFER

The drawing up of a ketubah (wedding contract) goes back 2,000 years. The “pre-nup” was designed to protect the bride’s interest. It stipulated the specific terms of the marriage union, including the groom’s pledge to his beloved’s family that he would support and protect her during all their days. Nowadays, ketubot no longer pledge goats, cows, chickens, or a sturdy tent as part of a dowry; the document has evolved into an artful and spiritual symbol connecting two partners to one another and to their rich Jewish heritage. Along with traditional ketubot written in English or Hebrew, some couples write their own to creatively formalize their partnership. Some ketubot feature ornate customized designs so beautiful that they are framed and put on display. The signing of the ketubah occurs right before the wedding ceremony. The rabbi reads the document aloud to a

WEDDI NGS 2010

The bridal couple’s first “home” is the chupah (canopy) they stand under during the wedding ceremony. The chupah is open on all sides, as was Abraham and Sarah’s tent. This allows the couple to face the world together, surrounded by loved ones. The chupah can be as simple as a draped tallit resting on four poles, or an elaborate flower-laden canopy perched on a leafy vine-covered trellis. “Fancy or plain, the chupah represents the bride leaving her father’s home and entering her husband’s domain,” says Rabbi Sharon Marcus of Park Synagogue (Conservative). “It symbolizes the home the couple will build together, supporting each other through good and bad times.” It also provides the wedding photographer with great photo ops!

The circling of the groom It’s not enough that the bride and groom feel as though they have been running in circles before the wedding; they have to actually do it during their wedding ceremony – seven times! A bride circling the groom is an Orthodox wedding tradition that is now incorporated into Reform, Reconstructionist and Conservative weddings. With a nod to modernity and egalitarianism, men and woman can take turns circling their partner if they choose.

The seven circles reminds the couple that the world was built in seven days, so they are figuratively building the walls of their new world together. Circling also signifies the groom or the bride is the center of each other’s world. After the wedding, the couple will participate in another circle when they join hands with family and friends and dance a joyous hora. L’Chayim!

strength of Judaism.

Breaking of the glass (Hakafot)

Nothing signifies a Jewish wedding more than the breaking of the glass at the conclusion of the wedding ceremony. There are as many interpretations of why the glass is broken as there are shards of glass in the napkin after the groom “puts his foot down.” Depending on whom you ask, the breaking of the glass is symbolic of the destrucWrapping the tallit tion of the Temple in Jerusalem, a represenThe groom’s or a close family member’s tation of the fragility of human relationships, tallit (prayer shawl) can play a role at the or a reminder that marriage changes the lives wedding ceremony. by roberta b. sears ou’ve said yes to the dress. And to the rabbi, flowers, music, menu, color scheme, invitations, and 1,001 other details. The wedding and reception were everything you dreamed they’d be. And now, finally, all the work related to it is over, right? No. You absolutely must thank everyone who helped you or gave you a gift to start your new life as a married couple. It’s a big task. How do you begin? STATIONERY. To thank people for gifts received before your wedding (shower gifts, early wedding gifts), use stationery with the bride’s name or initials only. After the wedding, informals (small, folded note cards) can have the bride’s new name or initials or the name of the bride and groom. You might want to order them to match your invitations, but it’s not necessary. You will be using notes like this for years, so consider choosing a more neutral version and order extra. A groom may choose to use flat correspondence cards with his name on it to write a note. Yes, men write thank-you notes, too. Peter Post, Emily’s great-grandson, says not sending notes is “egregious.” Ink should always be black or blue; such notes are never typed. And forget about e-mailing, Twittering or posting a thank-you on someone’s Facebook page! This is absolutely unacceptable. RECORD-KEEPING. Keep a list of who gave you what. (You’ll be amazed how much you’ll appreciate that list 12 years from now, when you wonder who gave you the crystal bowl you use every Rosh Hashanah.) The easiest way is to write the gift next to the name on your invitation list; that way, you have the address handy, too. List the gift immediately so you

don’t misplace a card and get confused, and check off each gift after you’ve written the thank-you note. TIMING. Even if you thanked someone in person, you still must send a hand-written note. Most experts agree that a thank-you note should be written the day the gift is received or at least that week. If that’s not possible, two to three months later is the absolute maximum deadline you have. The notion that brides have a year to write thank-you notes is a fallacy. People want to know their gift arrived safely. Need incentive to write those notes in a timely fashion? Remember that you are not supposed to use a wedding gift until after the wedding. Set a schedule (seven notes every night, for example) to force yourself to complete the task. WORDING. Address the gift-giver the way you do in person (“Aunt Susie”) or the way names were listed on the gift card. The note will be short – maybe four sentences long, but it should show enthusiasm for their choice of gift or their efforts. The closer to the time you received the gift, the easier it will be to convey your delight in words. If the gift was cash or a check, do not state the amount, but use an expression like “generous” or “thoughtful” and mention how you plan to spend the money. Be sure to identify what the gift was. Try to personalize the note to that particular person or gift. Even if you don’t like the gift or you got three coffee makers, remember that it took thought and effort and money to choose that for you; the giftgiver wants to hear you are happy with it. If you received a shower gift and a wedding gift from the same person, you must write a different thank-you note for each. You also need to write separate notes even if six couples went in together to buy you a TV. Also remember to thank people who were generous in ways other than actual gifts – wedding attendants, hostesses for show-

ers, the man who volunteered to make a video, the lady who made your veil for free. Each of them added to your special occasion and went out of his or her way for you. These are not your bar or bat mitzvah gifts, so not only must the thank-you notes be legible and neat, recipients expect your grammar and spelling to be perfect. You’re a married person at a new stage of your life, and you represent yourself and your spouse now. You want both families and your friends to be impressed by how graciously and how well you communicated with them. And your mother (or his) will kvell when her friends tell her what a charming, warm note they received. Traditionally a bride wrote all thank-you notes, included the groom’s name in the note (“Jonathan and I are so excited”), and signed her own name. But with more working wives and greater equality, more and more couples are splitting the thank-you note task (maybe the bride sends notes to her family and friends, and the groom, to his). If you choose, both the bride and the groom can each sign the bottom of a thank-you note. FAILURE. If you should not get a thank-you note out in a timely manner, which The Knot says would be “mortifying,” it is acceptable for the gift-giver to write the bride to ask if the gift arrived. Don’t put anyone into that position. ENJOY. You will feel such a sense of accomplishment when the last note has been sent, and then you can bask in all the generosity your friends and family showered upon you for your special day.n

SOME things are just meant to be. Many brides and grooms marvel over coincidences, but none more than Mariana and Alexis Edelman. Alexis left his native Buenos Aires, Argentina, to finish his undergraduate degree in international business at The University of Akron. Life was falling into place in Cleveland, and he landed a marketing job at Project Love. The only thing missing, he believed, was the right woman. On a lark, he logged onto delacole.com, the Argentinean version of JDate. Soon he began “chatting” online with one girl – he in Cleveland, she in Buenos Aires. The real-time conversation was electric, but nothing compared to when they Mariana and Alexis Edelman exchanged pictures. have the Internet to thank They recognized each for reuniting them. other immediately. “We were high-school sweethearts,” explains Alexis, now 33. On his next trip home, he made a date with Mariana. “We picked up where we left off,” Mariana says. “We already knew each other, and we just connected.” In some ways, she muses, they are more compatible now than they were as teenagers. Alexis proposed in Spanish with rose petals; Mariana insisted he ask her again in English. The two novios (fiancés) planned a simple civil ceremony with a celebration later. “When our parents found out we were going to have a small ceremony, they said, ‘We have to be there. Get ready; we’re coming,’” says Alexis. Mariana’s parents were also able to fly in for the March 8 ceremony. On Feb. 27, the couple realized their simple ceremony was now a wedding for 50 people. To change from a civil ceremony to a religious one required arranging several important details. Alexis’s boss at Project Love,

Stuart Muszynski, belongs to Congregation Shaarey Tikvah, and Rabbi Ed Bernstein of that temple could perform the ceremony in English, with a guest translating. Alexis’s parents revealed they had bought a tallis in Israel 20 years ago, dreaming it would be be part of his chupah someday. Many of the details were falling into place, but they still worried about planning a wedding in just nine days. “There wasn’t time to obsess,” says Susan Muszynski. She took Mariana, a graphic designer, shopping for a dress and found one within about half an hour. No alterations were needed except the hem. “The thing is, I did 800 wedding albums for other brides so I know what I like,” says the bride. A friend offered to sponsor the wedding at Oakwood Country Club, and they made other decisions quickly. The musician, however, they wanted to meet. “We’ve never been to an American wedding before,” says Alexis. When Mark Feiman played “Erev Shel Shoshanim” (Night of Roses), the couple recognized the song. Feiman knew some of the traditional Jewish music they requested, too. Later that week, Mariana and Alexis were picking up aunts, uncles and cousins at the airport. Everyone made it except Mariana’s siblings and the grandmothers who are too old to travel. Echoing Alexis’s proposal, red roses were everywhere at the ceremony and reception. Every detail of the elegant wedding looked professional, down to the flower girls in red and white from a previous family wedding. Call it destiny or call it coincidence, Mariana wouldn’t change a thing. “It was perfect,” she says.n

All signs pointed to “yes” when Amy Ludwig Shuman’s husband Ken wooed her in lights.

Gayle’s first surprised thought was, “How did this get here,” she says with a laugh. Bafflement was quickly followed by joy. The Rubins now live in South Euclid with their three children. The famous cookie (with fortune) is shellacked and sits in a box in the couple’s bedroom. And Ho Wah’s, of course, is still one of their favorite places to eat.

Name in lights Amy Ludwig Shuman remembers the phone call well. Her boyfriend Ken rang her from a booth outside the now defunct Centrum Theater on Coventry Road in Cleveland Heights. “He said he was ‘in a bind’ and needed me to come. It was strange,” recalls Amy, a former Beachwood resident now living in Buffalo. Amy wasn’t worried that Ken was in any trouble, although she did have her suspicions. The call came during Thanksgiving week of 1994, right around the time of her 30th birthday. Amy thought Ken was trying to set her up for a surprise party. The couple had talked at length about getting married, notes 58

Ken, a Buffalo native, but Amy wanted the engagement to be a surprise. Since the pair attended movies at the Centrum, Ken thought putting Amy’s name in bright lights would “pass the test,” he says. Walking up Coventry, Amy saw Ken standing underneath the marquee. After saying hello, she asked him what was going on. He simply pointed up at the brightly lit sign. A short poem glowed in place of the movie selections. “Amy Sue, I love you,” it read. “Will you marry me? Say I do.” “I couldn’t believe it,” says Amy, 45, a clinical psychologist and mother of two. “Ken’s a quiet, humble guy. This was so out of character for him.” The pair had a small audience watching, including several employees from a nearby condom store. “What did she say?” one asked eagerly. Amy said “yes.” After all, as Harry famously told Sally, “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”n

She happily played the dutiful daughter, allowing her parents, Lois an Norman Press, to plan the wedding of their dreams. “I really didn’t have to get involved,” she says. After 30 years of marriage ended in divorce, she found herself on the dating scene. She was just about to give up when she reluctantly agreed to meet Akron native Bill Enders, whom she had corresponded with on match.com. “I showed up with no makeup on and my hair in a ponytail,” she says. The coffee date was the Marcy and Bill Enders found a role for children and start of an instant rapport. “We just grandchildren, top, in their ceremony.

Between the two of them, they have 13 children (including spouses) and 10 grandchildren. This time, Marcy planned every detail of the Nov. 12, 2007, ceremony from the white cupcakes topped with pearls and arranged like a tiered wedding cake, to the song list for the DJ. Marcy even planned the ceremony, including an original ritual Darci came up with to show the blending of their two lives. “I wanted to show that when Bill and I got married, we all got married,” says Marcy. “We got these big Gerbera Daisies,” one color for her side, another color for his, she continues. Each child and grandchild walked down the aisle and placed them in a vase, representing the blending of the families. Later at the party, Marcy and

Bill planned a “campy” first dance to Anne Murray’s song “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do.” “I didn’t want a mushy song for our first dance at our age,” she quips. Marcy had a traditional dance with her father … until her son Mitch cut in. A special dance for her mother invited four generations of women onto the dance floor. The dancing continued with circles of twirling grandchildren. As the years go on, Marcy feels even more encircled by the love of her family members. Judith and Howard Siegel wed in a backyard garden after meeting at Montefiore, where Judith worked and Howard volunteered. The couple, shown ballroom dancing last year, is approaching 25 years of marriage.

Scott Newman had almost given up on love when he decided to volunteer at Mt. Sinai, where Donell Miller served as child-life specialist. The Pepper Pike couple married on the golden anniversary of Scott’s parents.

his life, he decided to volunteer at Mt. Sinai, where he was born and where his parents had received medical treatment. While cleaning toys and visiting with young patients once a week in the pediatrics unit, he met Donell Miller, a child-life specialist almost nine years his junior. For about six months, Scott and Donell frequently chatted after his shift. At one point, she even attempted to fix him up with a co-worker. One evening in 1994, Scott recalls, “She was going out with some of her friends and said, ‘Would you like to join us?’ And we clicked.” Scott admired Donell because she was different from other women he had dated. “She’s a strong woman with lots of opinions, and I had a lot of respect for her,” Scott says. “I got to know her for her values – living a quality life, going out of her way for other people before herself, making a difference.”

After a year of courtship, Scott was ready for marriage. “But we say Donell had her midlife crisis,” he quips. She had decided to follow in the footsteps of many relatives who worked as teachers, returning to school to earn a master’s in education. In December 1996, Donell surprised Scott by announcing, “Okay, I’m ready.” Scott formally proposed on Feb. 9, 1997, after receiving the blessing of Donell’s father. The Newmans chose July 4, 1997, for their wedding because it was the 50th anniversary of Scott’s parents. “We didn’t have a wedding cake, but a 50th anniversary cake for them.” The ceremony took place at Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple with Rabbi Sharon Marcus officiating. Three kids and more than 11 years later, the Pepper Pike couple continues to give of their time and themselves. “We make sure our children know how important our values are,” Scott says.n

“Big Sis” Lola Farron, left, visits the Metroparks with “Little Sis” Jenny Dvorkin shortly after the youngster emigrated.

Sixteen years later, the former Jewish Big Brother Big Sister Association “match” reconnect at Jenny’s bridal shower.

more than a marriage wedding unites couple and reunites bride with former ‘big sis’ by nina polien light

LOLA Farron isn’t the mother of the bride, but she tears up thinking about Jenny Dvorkin’s Dec. 27 marriage to Gadi Wininger. “The thank-you note for the shower gift says, ‘It was truly special to have you there,’” reads an emotional Farron. “‘You were my first American friend, and I’m so happy that 16 years later, you are still in my life.’” The women’s friendship dates back to 1993, shortly after the Dvorkins move to Cleveland from the former Soviet Union. As Jenny’s Big Sister through the Jewish Big Brother Big Sister Association, Farron helped the shy 9-year-old adapt to American life by speaking to her in English, taking her to the mall, touring museums, visiting an animal rescue shelter, and hosting Jenny’s family for holiday dinners. But when Jenny started high school, the two saw each other less frequently, and eventually the outings stopped. Fast forward to Dec. 28, 2008. Jenny, now a medical student at Case Western Reserve University, is introducing her family to that of her Israeli-born boyfriend Gadi Wininger, a student in a doctoral program for physical therapy at Cleveland State University. Suddenly, in front of the stunned gathering, Gadi proposes to the young woman he met at Case Hillel several years earlier.

“It was pretty crazy, Jenny recalls. “We had been talking about it, but I didn’t think he would do it that evening. As the families shifted into planning mode, Jenny’s friend requested snapshots so she could make a video montage for the reception. “Jenny’s first photos in America were all with Lola, says Jenny’s mother Emma. “So we started thinking about whom she will invite to the bridal shower and wedding – and the first name was Lola. But Jenny realized she didn’t have a current phone number for her former “Big; Lola had moved since their last conversation. Fortuitously, Jenny’s parents bumped into Lola at an outdoor concert at Legacy Village and shared their daughter’s good news. The friendship was renewed. At the shower, Lola resumed her mentor role by introducing Jenny to the American custom of fashioning a bouquet out of gift bows and ribbons, a practice not done in Russia or Israel. “It was nice to have Lola there with all the other significant women in my life, Jenny says. “Both sides of the family did not have much of an idea about this tradition. When Jenny, 25, and Gadi, 30, married at Sherwin-Gilmour Party Center, the celebration reflected Jewish, Russian, Israeli and

American customs. Russian-born Cantor Misha Pisman of Park Synagogue officiated at the traditional ceremony that included a bedeken (veiling of the bride) and the Sephardi practice of wrapping the couple in a tallit. The latter honors the Moroccan heritage of the groom’s mother. The band played a variety of Russian, Israeli and American music. Multiple courses of hot and cold Russian dishes were served along with festive kosher fare for Gadi’s family. Specially ordered from a Russian bakery in New York, each of the wedding cake’s three tiers featured a different flavor. Unlike American versions – which are frequently white, yellow or chocolate – Russian wedding cakes “often have nuts, cream and multiple layers within the wedding cake, Jenny explains. And when guests wanted the happy couple to kiss, they didn’t clink their drinking glasses. Instead, they yelled, “Gorka! “It basically means ‘bitter’ in Russian, Jenny says, laughing. “I’m not sure of the significance, but it’s equivalent to hitting the glass. The couple and new machetunim (in-laws) enjoyed the celebration. So did Lola Farron. She chokes up once more with happiness. “I feel God brought us back together.n

THE sun was not yet up on Dec. 12, 2008, when I locked the door to my Beachwood apartment for the last time. As I returned the keys to the leasing office, I contemplated how I would manage to live out of a backpack for nine months. Although my husband Eric Roush and I are both traditionalists, we decided to begin our lives in a nontraditional way: atop a mountain in the middle of nowhere, surrounded only by family and close friends. As it is written, “The soul of man is a lamp of G-d” (Proverbs 20:27). While I stood with my beshert (soul mate) surrounded by family and cherished friends under the chupah in rainy Pala, Calif., I knew that Eric was my lamplighter and that I was his. Jan. 1, 2009, marked the first day of our honeymoon around the world, in what we hoped would be a spiritually uplifting journey. two of us slept in tents, completely exposed to the wilderness. Lions, hyenas, elephants and wildebeests freely passed through our campsite, simultaneously terrifying us with their growls and lulling us to sleep with their synchronized stomps. From the expansive grassy plains of Serengeti, we headed to the pristine island of Zanzibar, where we explored the labyrinth, cobblestone streets of Stone Town, the enchanting capital, lounged on beaches, and toured the exotic spice plantations. In what seemed to be the blink of an eye, Eric and I were seated on an aircraft once again, this time heading to Israel. The two of us were thrilled to revisit Israel and celebrate Pesach with my extended family and with Eric’s parents. My husband, who had never experienced a Persian Passover seder, did not know what to expect when my uncle began reading from the Haggadah and was shocked when all 30 guests burst out of their seats like a fire had just been lit under their chairs. He sat paralyzed during the first round of “Dayenu” as my cousins attacked him like Egyptian slave-drivers armed with green onions. By the second round, Eric caught on to the custom and made his way around the table along with the rest of the family, shrieking and whipping anyone who got in his way. Following the lively, traditional seder, I led my parents-in-law 72

Not only did we explore archaeological ruins in Beit She’an, climb Masada’s snake-path at 4 a.m., hike through Ein Gedi, float in the Dead Sea, and put notes in the Kotel, we also traveled from north to south, visiting family in nearly every city along the way. Hoi An, Vietnam: Following an overnight train ride from Ho Chi Minh City to Hoi An, Eric lugs our bags to the bus.

before we knew it, Eric and I were on our way to Nepal. The two of us arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, on Friday morning. After dropping our bags off in our hotel, we set out to find the local Chabad House. Two hours after heading out onto the nameless, narrow, overwhelmingly crowded streets, we started noticing Hebrew signs beckoning Israeli backpackers to hike, bike or white-water raft with one of a number of Israeli-run businesses. When I finally saw a Bruchim Ha’Baim (welcome) sign, I knew that we had reached our first stop in Asia. Upon entering the oasis and seeing at least 30 Israelis sitting on café chairs in the courtyard, chatting, playing Shesh-Besh (backgammon), and eating falafel, I immediately felt at home. Not only were we guaranteed kosher food and a festive Shabbat surrounded Marpha, Nepal: Eric and I spent a night in the small by hundreds of Israelis at the Chabad mountain village of Marpha on our trek through the Annapurna Mountain Range. House, we were also granted the 74

opportunity to become part of a community, exchanging stories, tips and travel books with fellow backpackers. We spent the next month trekking from one teahouse to another along the Annapurna Circuit in the Himalayas and discovering the sights of New Delhi and Agra in India before heading to Thailand. Upon our arrival in Bangkok, Eric and I were impressed by the intermingling of skyscrapers, 7-Elevens, and English-language billboards with ornate Buddhist temples, lavish Thai palaces, and massive local markets. After a weeklong self-tour of Bangkok, Thailand’s national treasure house, we began a monthlong group tour through Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos. Along the way, we visited Angkor Wat, Security Prison 21, the extensive Cuchi Tunnels, and the Saigon Chabad House. One rainy

morning, Eric and I woke up before dawn to observe the saffronrobed monks of Luang Prabang making their way through the city, collecting their daily alms. Throughout the tour, Eric and I were approached by locals in awe of our American heritage – some were jealous of the opportunities afforded us based on our birthplace, and others were quick to refer to us as “the enemy.” We took each comment with a grain of salt and challenged ourselves to learn about the everpresent issues regarding the Khmer Rouge, the Vietnam War, the growth of capitalism, and the sad reality of drug and child trafficking. Before leaving Southeast Asia for Australia and New Zealand, Eric and I opted to relax on the infamous, gorgeous Thai islands for three weeks. We spent those last two months of our honeymoon enjoying G-d’s miraculous playground – scuba diving in Koh Phi Phi and on the Great Barrier Reef, boating through the Whitsunday Islands, trekking across Fox Glacier, and kayaking with seals and dolphins in Kaikoura. When Eric and I finally landed back at home in Cleveland, we were greeted by a herd of family members screaming and waving “Welcome Home” signs. It’s been a few months since our return to the real world, but the memories of our trip glimmer in our minds as if we were trudging through the rainstorm in Barcelona just yesterday. n
