Thanks to you, April’s Dad isn’t reading bedtime stories to her.

She’s reading them to herself.

Last school year, hundreds of volunteers from all faiths joined together to read, write and build relationships with more than 300 students in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District through the Federation’s Public Education Initiative. Through its annual Campaign for Jewish Needs, the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland helps support and deliver critically important programs like this that create opportunities to address the needs of the City of Cleveland. But it’s your commitment to the annual Campaign that makes what we do possible. Your generosity does a world of good!

JEANS. Wide leg, skinny, boot-cut, distressed, stonewashed or faded, they are a staple of nearly every woman’s wardrobe. Finding the perfect pair can be frustrating. TAKING a dip in the swimming pool. Playing billiards in the walk-out basement. Chatting by the wood-burning fireplace in the great room. Lorie and Randy Hart’s home offers ample opportunity for family and friends to kick back and relax. The couple’s enthusiasm for frequent, casual get-togethers guided design choices for the Solon home they share with their children Nikki, 14, and Dylan, 12. “We entertain all the time,” says Lorie, explaining her desire for a home that’s beautiful, functional and comfortable. “I’m all about low maintenance. Everything in the house from the flooring to the furniture was chosen because of its durability, comfort, ease of clean-up and style.” Completed in December 2005, the 7,000-sq.-ft. contempo-

rary home includes a walk-out lower level and an expansive outdoor entertaining area the Harts use much of the year. Their backyard retreat, accessible from the lower level, master bedroom and kitchen, is truly an oasis tucked away in the suburbs. Natural stone, antiqued brick and faux Shaker styling (actualThe firepit is the perfect place to toast marshmallows and gorge on s’mores.

The rectangular pool is the centerpiece of the Harts’ backyard oasis.

The covered deck is an outdoor room, notes Lorie, a teacher at Kadima Gan preschool. “It serves as our dining room, reading room and gathering spot in the summer.” A beige area rug with a black-vine motif anchors a couch, two chairs, coffee table and side table crafted to mimic brown rattan. Seats are covered in orange-red cushions. “My favorite color is red,” Lorie says.

family to dine al fresco well into the fall. A few steps down from the deck is a natural bluestone patio. “It holds up to the weather,” Lorie points out. “And I like the way the moss grows between the cracks.” The only drawback is that it’s hot on bare feet, she admits. The patio’s outdoor kitchen allows the couple to prepare meals without leaving their guests. The kitchen features a stainless

Lorie Hart can prepare dinner and still interact with family and guests from this centrally located kitchen. Granite topped island, below, provides a place to eat as well as a prep area for cooking.

An Ohio State University garden gnome perched on the counter pays homage to the couple’s shared alma mater. He’s joined by an aluminum frog dressed in chef’s togs. “He rules the grill,” Lorie quips. Fieldstone steps lead to the rectangular pool. “We didn’t want rectangular steps,” Randy explains. “It would take away from the natural look of the area.” A multi-tiered waterfall adjacent to the steps gently cascades over stones, is redirected to the top and recycled. The swimming pool is the centerpiece of the yard. Surrounded by stained concrete and bluestone, the pool features a diving board and basketball hoop. Chaise lounges, a dining table with a gray-and-beige-striped umbrella, and flower-filled planters surround the pool. Lighted trees and a full sound system add to the area’s festive atmosphere. “Our favorite thing to do in the backyard is float in the pool at night, watch the stars, and listen to the night sounds,” Lorie says. “We have a resident owl, and sometimes we hear the coyotes singing.” After a swim, the family likes to “sit around the fire pit and eat s’mores until we get stomach aches,” Lorie admits. A slate path leads from the pool area to a full bath, keeping wet swimmers and towels away from the carpeted section of the 64

The office is located just off the entrance foyer. Slate tiles are a focal point of the fireplace.

The first-floor master suite features a wrought-iron bed covered in beige linens with red flower accents. Custom beige curtains dress bay windows overlooking the pool. White French doors provide access to the backyard. Most notable in the master bath are the Jerusalem limestone counters Lorie selected because of the visible fossils. Slate floors, brown and black granite countertops, and cherry wood cabinets dominate the gourmet kitchen. “This area was designed so I can talk with guests even when I’m doing dishes,” she says. Behind the six-burner gas range, backsplash tiles are reproductions of an 1800s Tiffany-style accented with copper diamond inserts. Crackled subway tiles extend to other areas. A shadowbox cupboard above the counter is fashioned around a window, affording an outdoor view. “The builder hated me for it,” Lorie says, chuckling. “But it lets light in.” A Mission-style dining table and chairs grace the dining room. The tray ceiling adds an elegant touch to the area.

Corner pieces on the shadowbox and kitchen cupboards are made of stained glass.

Kosher gourmet kitchen features separate ovens, dishwashers, microwaves and sinks for meat and dairy. Adjacent dining area lets Debi interact with guests while in the prep area.

The “Blessing for the Home” is colorfully illustrated in this artwork.

But the four-mile trek to Chabad Jewish Center of Solon on Shabbat and Jewish holidays, when driving isn’t permitted, began to take its toll on Debi, her financial-planner husband Howard, and their daughters Danielle, 14, and Rachel, 12. Then, a builder broke ground for an intimate development within walking distance of the shul. “This area fell into our lap,” Debi confirms. Construction began on the Slaters’ 3,800-sq.-foot brick, ranchstyle home in October 2007. The following August, the family settled into the beautifully appointed residence. “I wanted to build a house that was already dressed,” Debi explains, as she points out the architectural arches and curves she favors. The home’s design accommodates study sessions, holiday meals, and other simchahs . “I built this house for others to come and enjoy,” says Debi, who provides overnight lodging to individuals who want to walk to services. “Everything is because of Hashem.”

Accommodating Shabbos guests is no problem with a dining table that easily seats 12. The custom, built-in cabinets display ritual items and provide plenty of storage.

Howard brought this silver Kiddush set home from one of his many trips to Israel.

A visitor feels the spiritual warmth on entering the home, decorated in warm Tuscan hues. No less than 40 mezuzot hang throughout, visible on every exterior and interior door, including those leading to walk-in closets. Debi says it took her rabbi, Zushe Greenberg, two days to mount them. The foyer embodies the home’s heimish (friendly) atmosphere. Painted a gold-brown hue, it features a ceramic-tile floor with glass-tile insets. A painting by an Israeli artist depicts a Jerusalem wedding. Painted on corrugated paper, the colorful piece illustrates a bride and groom, musicians and men dancing with Torah scrolls. A Hebrew psalm on the picture translates, “If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand wither.” To the left of the foyer, French doors lead to the library where expansive built-in shelves are lined with Jewish reference books. A kidney-shaped cherry wood desk stained a wine color anchors the space. Red and gold carpet and chairs covered in brown leather and fabric complete the décor. Across the foyer, an inviting sitting room brims with Judaica.

For his part, Turner, a drummer tied in to the latest in Jewish music, doesn’t have a lot of love for Taub’s much-loved klezmer. He’s dialed into the Jewish music scene that includes bigname musicians such as Srully Williger, Dudu Fisher and Baruch Levine, who have appeared on the show live. Taub is the newsman. He brings news from his weekly e-mail newsletter FrumCleveland (frumcleveland.org) to the show as well as guests like Israeli politician Moshe Arens and Rabbi Susan B. These are the people the school is targeting, Some are looking for jobs as restaurant chefs, while others are considering food production, becoming personal chefs, or just taking the course for personal enrichment. “The school is technique, not recipe-driven,” Blondel says. Over the course of the six weeks, the students learn basic French culinary skills, from making sauces and soup stocks to cooking the perfect omelet. They also learn about applying kosher laws in a commercial kitchen, mainly through lectures by rabbis from the OK. And unlike other cooking schools they might have considered, they are able to taste everything they prepare. You might shell out $40,000 or more to attend The Culinary Institute of America or one of the other prestigious cooking schools, and if you keep kosher, Pinson says, you’d never be able to taste what you’re learning to cook. “Then you go home, buy the ingredients, cook and taste it there, double the work.” Pinson says that’s the experience of many, if not most, of the chefs working in kosher restaurants in this country. DURING a year when the high cost of gas injects itself into everyday conversation, the German automaker Audi has tweaked every detail of its newly released 2009 A4 sedan in pursuit of fuel savings. Among the changes is a new, 6-speed automatic transmission that disengages when the car stops to reduce fuel consumption. Even the air conditioning unit is lighter and more efficient to save a drop or two of fuel each mile. These changes don’t mean Audi has skimped on performance. Audi says its V6 engine supplies more torque (the sensation you feel when you step on the gas pedal) than BMW and Lexus while offering 15% better fuel economy.

EPA fuel economy figures were just announced for all A4 models. These milesper-gallon estimates range from 17city/26-highway on the low end to 23/30 for the 4-cylinder engine. The A4 is Audi’s stock sedan – the 2009 model has been made larger and more fuel efficient to appeal to American tastes. I tested the 3.2-liter V6 engine with six-speed Tiptronic transmission, and the vehicle proves to be a solid addition to the Audi lineup. The A4 has a longer, wider body and more standard content than previous models.

The new A4 (price, as tested, $40,000) has a longer, wider body, a longer wheel-
