throat,” says Testen. “(My voice) just wouldn’t come out any more, so I just stopped trying.” After a year of grieving, Testen knew she needed to find a creative outlet. A visit to a local art show near her mother Jeanne’s winter home in Sarasota, Fla., introduced her to dazzling dichroic glass. Her artistic spark was renewed. Testen, who credits her father for her artistic sensibility, strives for innovation in the one-of-a-kind pieces she makes. She peruses Vogue and Bazaar for the latest colors and styles. “I’ve done jewelry like that,” says Testen, pointing to a model donning a silver necklace with thin spikes lying across her collarbone. “They copied me!” she adds with a laugh. Testen’s

Her prices range from pendants and earrings starting at $19.95 to upwards of $180 for more elaborate pieces. She does a great deal of her work in the middle of the night, with favorite television shows or classic movies, especially those
starring Audrey Hepburn, playing in the background. “At night no one’s interrupting you; the phone isn’t ringing,” Testen explains. Testen draws inspiration from her favorite artists – especially Impressionists Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas and Vincent van Gogh. “A lot of the colors that Monet used, wow!” she exclaims. “The lavenders and the subtle turquoise, and the way he would mix his colors so exquisitely. That’s a lot of what I saw in the dichroic glass: the way the light would hit the glass and the different reflective colors that would come out.” Testen’s sparkle rivals her jewelry as she bustles around a room filled with carefully displayed pieces. Her conversation jumps from art to classic movies to the music that inspires her, like Rachmaninoff, Frank Sinatra and Michael Bublé. Her breast cancer bracelets are crafted with pink glass beads, the breast cancer ribbon, and a sterling bead reading either “hope” or “survivor.” All profits go to The Gathering Place. She

The curtain has just come down on Chagrin Valley Little Theatre’s (CVLT) anniversary concert of “Guys & Dolls.” After the hugs and congratulations and post-show reception and prop cleanup, Paula Pike and her two grown children, Greta and Andrew Rothman, escort this reporter into the men’s dressing room. “We shouldn’t be bothered in here,” Paula says confidently. But within moments, several actors and stagehands start poking their heads in, looking for missing items or misplaced friends. “These guys are like my uncles,” Greta says with a wry grin once the dressing room clears out again. “I’ve known them since I was a kid.” Greta and Drew grew up in theater, accompanying mother Paula to her various community theater rehearsals and eventually joining her on stage. Now in their 30s, the Rothmans are still coming with mom to rehearsals, but as her co-stars, her publicity director, or in CVLT’s upcoming production of “The Wizard of Oz,” her director and designer. 72

Expect quick, smooth acceleration even when just tapping on the gas pedal. The amount of giddy-up is surprising for a vehicle that weights upwards of 5,000 pounds. Fuel economy with the V-6 is an EPA-estimated 14-miles-per-gallon city and 20 highway. Superb handling is thanks to the Q7’s standard electronic stability control (ESC), which lightly applies the brakes to individual wheels even when the vehicle’s path does not match the driver’s intentions. Indeed, the brakes are almost too sensitive: Drivers will find that there is no need to give the brakes anything more than a light tap at red lights or when navigating turns. Power steering is speed-sensitive and takes some getting used to when rounding tight corners. Put simply, this vehicle drives lighter than it looks, so just nudging the wheel is enough to make a smooth turn. Inside, the Q7 will seat five. The driver’s seat is comfortable, and interior surfaces are nicely padded. Gauges are clear and bright, with an information display between the speedometer and tachometer, which cycles through menus via buttons on the steering wheel. The centerpiece of the interior is the Multi-Media Interface (MMI), a feature common across Audi’s model line. The system includes a central control dial and a dozen buttons to control climate, stereo, navigation systems and more. MMI takes some time to learn, and it may be smart to practice using the controls in your driveway before taking the car on the road. The position of the interface, next to the gearshift, may require drivers to look away from the road. However, stereo volume and seek functions can be accessed on the steering sheel. Most conveniently, the system also responds to voice commands. Those searching for a luxury SUV will not be disappointed by the Q7’s winning combination of comfort, style and space. L
