When I tell my nieces and nephews about this special Chanukah present, they just roll their eyes. But I will never forget how my parents brilliantly illustrated the old adage, ‘Good things come to those who wait.’” The only daughter in a family of three sons, Evy Davis received Ruth Elliott rides a 10-speed now, but still keeps the three-speed English racer she got when she was 12. 32

past five years, they’ve been traveling to competitions. So far, they’ve gone to Pittsburgh and New Jersey and journeyed twice to Canada. After their Pittsburgh trip, Feinberg decided to capture memories of the event in a scrapbook that she gave her mom for Chanukah. The scrapbook features the tags the pair wore to get into the competition, photographs with skaters, and other mementos. After several weeks of cutting, pasting and finding the perfect captions for the pictures, the scrapbook was ready. “She loved it. She cried,” says Feinberg. “We have a very close relationship – we’re best friends – so it is really special for her.”

brainstorming ideas for his milestone birthday, and then Fisher stepped in with a solution. “There was a baseball and football player (1958-1967 and 1955 respectively) named Carroll Hardy who had been Howard’s childhood hero and who shared the same birthday as his, and he wanted Hardy to autograph a ball,” explains Mindlin.

a sister act TWINS Amy and Audrey Kekst have always had similar interests. When Amy started spending her evenings creating jewelry with beads and sterling silver, it was only a matter of time before Audrey joined her. “I kept saying, come on, work with me,” Amy laughs. “Little by little I pulled Audrey in. Then she got hooked to the point where she was more addicted than I was.” Soon after, the sisters, both Beachwood residents, formed a company and began selling their designs together. Amy and Audrey have been creating gold and silver necklaces and earrings for four years. “We’re young at this,” Amy laughs. “I’m still learning.” She took a few classes and suffered through “a lot of trial and error. I had some train wrecks. People would buy things, and then they’d fall apart.” When Audrey became interested, Amy taught her what she had learned. Today, their creations are sold at local boutiques. “Like anything else, the more you do it, the better you get,” Amy says. Their pieces range in price from $35 to $2,000. Amy spends anywhere from three to six hours a day working in

The designs sold so well, Skirball admits, she soon began focusing on designing and making one-ofa-kind pieces. Thomas Riley is now her biggest vendor. The young artist sells her jewelry in galleries and boutiques across the country in addition to two local locations and on her website. Designs range in price from $75 to $12,000, depending upon which stones are used. The more gems used in a piece, the higher the cost. “I have pieces with diamonds, and those are obviously going to be on the high end,” Skirball says. The gemstone bead necklaces, which are her most popular creations, are strung on a nylon-based thread that resembles silk. The string is knotted between the stones for extra strength and security. The necklaces range from one single strand of beads to as many as nine or ten strands of colorful, brilliant stones, often flanking larger gems of similar color. Skirball’s long drop earrings feature colored stones at the end of silver or gold strands. “Jewelry is about having fun and showing people who you are,” Skirball notes on her website. Color is her biggest inspiration, she

have had artists repeat them in other commissioned pieces, like the tall ceramic candlesticks they ordered in 1994 from an artist at the Cain Park Art Show. Years ago, when Linda’s mother Harriet died, her father, Judge Manny Rocker, had a stonemason carve 1-4-3 on her tombstone. He refused to tell Linda what the numbers signified, challenging her to figure it out. About a year later, she solved the puzzle. The numerals correspond to the number of letters in each word of the phrase “I love you,” she told her father. “What took you so long?” he replied. After her father died, Linda found her mother’s dance card from “Primary Color Persians With Contrasting Lip Wraps” by Dale Chihuly hangs on the wall above the living room sofa. and fruit decorating the structure’s roof. Toso, an Orthodox Jew, was born a Catholic, Dan explains. He was working in the Jewish section in Venice, which was also an artists’ quarter. During the 1967 war in Israel, Toso became so passionate about the Jewish state that he converted to Judaism. His wife had their marriage annulled, took their two children, and left. The artist moved to Israel, married a woman he met there, and the couple settled in Baltimore. Since Toso is shomer Shabbos (Sabbath observant), he doesn’t attend weekend art shows. Unlike many of

gallery. He was told that several people had already expressed interest in the artwork. Dan made the gallery owner an offer. After the other potential buyers balked at the asking price and following some further negotiation, the succah was his. In the couple’s living room, two cut and polished lead crystal pieces by Michael Pavlik feature geometric motifs. In one, blue circles surround three triangles, containing what appear to be red panes of glass. In reality, the red is a reflection from skinny lines of red glue holding the shapes together. In the second Pavlik work, “Kunsterstruction,” a birthday gift for Linda, cobalt blue posts surround a cube and a circle. Across the room, in front of large windows framing views of
the treetops, is a whimsical glass chair by Therman Statom. Crafted from sheet glass painted on the back surface, the chair incorporates the artist’s impressions of a cruise, such as dice for the casino, a rowboat and blue waves. The most dramatic art in the living room, suspended above a high-backed beige sofa, are three large blown-glass sculptures in blue, yellow and red by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. The Terra cotta Peruvian church is displayed in the sunroom. 90

Seattle glass studio. The artist blows the glass, cuts the molten stream at the bottom and then turns the pipe upside down, while the glass is still fluid, Dan says. Gravity pulls the glass downward, creating the free-form flower-like shape. In the adjacent media room, two orange triangles of cast glass, one large, one small, stand in front of expansive windows. The Silverbergs are donating the work, created by a husband-and-wife team of Czech artists, Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtova, to the new Ireland Cancer Center at University Hospitals. It’s intended for the atrium lobby. Also on display in the media room is a blue and white sculpture by French artist Antoine Leperlier. It is composed of a blown-
glass book on top of a sealed cube with a cast-glass book inside. A piece by William Morris, a former master glassblower in Chihuly’s studio, demonstrates the artist’s interest in archaeology and tribal art. Intricate images of stags and animals reminiscent of the cave paintings in France cover the work’s surface. The artist lays the molten glass on top of images fashioned in colored sand, which fuses to the hot surface, Dan says. The Silverbergs also own a number of prized pieces by female artists. German artist Ann Wolff created a face with multiple layers of red and yellow glass surrounded by a frame of blue glass. Twin marble-topped chests flank black pedestal sink in the powder room.

room. Grebe typically puts herself in her pieces, which are usually blue, notes Dan. African themes are a favorite of two women from Seattle, Sabrina Knowles and Jenny Pohlman. A glass spear and mask are displayed in a hallway, and three strings of blown-glass gourds decorated with African beads hang above the fireplace in the library. An exquisite blown-glass vase by Lino Tagliapietra of Italy, a renowned Murano glass master, graces a shelf in the master bedroom. While the piece looks painted, Dan points out that Tagliapietra uses thin rods of glass, an ancient technique called millefiori, not paint, to create the nuanced colors. Also in the bedroom is “Chitamarra 2,” an astonishing glass lute made by Italian artist Davide Salvadore, part of his Africa collection. The artist mixes lampwork and furnace techniques in innovative ways, Dan notes. Although glass gets top billing in their home, the Silverbergs
own a number of beautiful works on paper and canvas. A dramatic abstract painting by Raimonds Staprans, who fled Latvia in 1947 after the Soviet invasion, hangs over a black granite-topped bar in the living room. Flanking a graceful, arched rosewood-colored mirror, inlaid with silver, are two striking lithographs of women by Cleveland artist Phyllis Sloane. They echo an evocative Alex Katz print across the room, reflected in the mirror. A large, textured, luminous oil painting by Marsha Meyers of Santa Fe in the media room complements the sparkling glass dis-

From the shimmering metallic gold ceiling in the living room to the polished marble foyer floor, the Silverbergs’ spacious light-filled condominium is the perfect foil for their gorgeous collection.

“I HAVE a deep, spiritual relationship with glass,” says Jeremy Langford, adjusting his black kipah before leaning forward onto one of his own creations — a finely wrought, all-glass conference table. Langford, an innovative glass artist whose work is displayed in locations across the globe, fell in love with glass on a trip to Israel when he was 18. “I was already dabbling in glass at the time, but I found a sandstone coated in iridescent glass, probably dating back to Roman times, at the edge of the sea in Caesaria,” he recalls. “It was one of the most beautiful pieces I had ever seen, and it had a profound effect on me.” Although the sandstone was far too heavy for Langford to lift, he was unwilling to return to England without it. In order to get it home, he spent about a week dragging it a few feet every day, burying it in the sand at nightfall, then returning the next day to repeat the process. As soon as Langford returned to London, he headed straight to a renowned glass artisan with a few of his own handmade pieces and asked to study with the artist. Following this classical education in glasswork, Langford made his way to South America with a backpack and a bag of tools for what he calls “an extended period of time.” Langford funded his travels by creating sculptures and glass art pieces commissioned by wealthy ranch owners.

The exhibit, which opened in the fall of 2006 at the visitor’s center at Jerusalem’s Western Wall, required three years of manufacturing, eight months of on-site work, and 150 tons of glass. The central sculpture, “Yearning to Zion,” represents a symbolic return to the Promised Land. Weighing 15 tons and standing 30 feet tall, it is constructed of thin pieces of stacked, luminous glass. According to Langford, glass was the medium chosen to symbolize the history of the Jewish people because of its aesthetic qualities and versatility. The seemingly hard and brittle surface of glass appeals to Langford because it can be transformed into something soft, sensuous and expressive through light. This signature leitmotif of opposing forces underlies all of Langford’s artistic creations — from gigantic sculptures and fountains to small creations for private collectors. “Life is all about bringing opposites together,” says Langford, a philosophical glint in his bright blue eyes. In the coming months, he will be creating a glass channukiah (Chanukah menorah) for a synagogue in Switzerland, three 20foot-tall glass sculptures for Trump Towers in Sunny Isles, Fla., and a large glass and stone Holocaust memorial for a synagogue in North Beverly Hills.

THREE months ago Adam Fleeman, executive chef of Brio at Legacy Village, spent his day off buying a house in Lyndhurst for himself and his new bride, Brittany. Since then, he’s spent time adding the “Fleeman touch” to the couple’s Richmond Road home. “I’ve called him from work, and he’s shopping at Bed Bath & Beyond,” Brittany laughs. “He likes doing decorating and has a knack for it, so I just let him do it.” The Fleemans were married in August, the same month they purchased and moved into their 2,475-square-foot home. “It was a hectic and stressful month,” admits Brittany, general manager of Bravo in Canton. But, Adam adds, “it kept things exciting!” The young couple are no strangers to doing things quickly. Two years ago, when Brittany’s job brought them to Cleveland, they found their Streetsboro apartment in two days. They got engaged while they were living in the apartment, and Adam did most of the house-hunting for five months, while Brittany did most of the wedding planning. When Adam found pictures of their future home online, he called their realtor immediately. “I couldn’t believe no one had bought it yet,” he says. He

toured the home the next morning, and “the second I walked in the door, I knew I wanted it. I called Brittany and said, ‘I’m putting a bid on it.’” Brittany didn’t set foot inside the house until a week after they finalized the paperwork but says she trusted Adam’s judgment. “I really liked it when we drove by,” she says, “and he liked it inside, so I said, ‘If you like it, let’s go for it.’” When Brittany finally walked through the two-story colonial house with open stairway and cathedral ceilings, she wasn’t disappointed. “I really loved it,” she says. Her favorite part of the home is the screened porch the previous owner added on. “I like the open spaces and the bright light.” The porch is also one of Adam’s favorite areas, although he admits, “There isn’t a part of the house that I don’t like.” The previous owner left it in great condition for the young couple. She had completed nearly $60,000 in renovations that included tearing down the walls between the dining room and foyer, Rich dark wood furniture provides a contrast to the light floors in the dining room. installing hardwood floors, adding the screened-in porch, and painting the entire structure. “I didn’t have to do a single thing,” Adam says. “I just turned the key and walked in. I didn’t even have to clean anything.” The home inspector couldn’t find anything major that needed fixing, he notes. “The list was mostly little things, like re-caulking the bathtub.” Most of the furniture, which Adam describes as “contemporary,” the couple brought with them from their previous apartment. Now that the Fleemans have gotten through the move and their wedding, they are working to add more of their own touches throughout the house, starting with the walls in the great room. “We have such tall ceilings and nothing on the walls,” Adam says. “We’re going to get some more artwork.” Area rugs in the great room will accent the hardware floors. The couple’s own personalities are reflected — especially in the kitchen. Their love of gadgets is evident in the well-equipped, off-white kitchen. The cabinets are formal-looking, bleached traditional cabinets with molding accented by dark laminate counters. “We have a KitchenAid mixer with all the attachments, a little fryer, a panini press, and much more,” Brittany says. Adam plans to replace the electric stove with a high-end commercial model, like a Viking. He notes the new appliances and décor accents will be just the finishing touches that will make the kitchen and their home “right where it needs to be.”
