While being “presented,” each girl walks out with a big grin on her face. The families of each girl are given tables right next to the dance floor, and the girls’ (biological) mothers are given front row seats. After the final Queen Esther debuts, the entire group begins the traditional dances, gliding through the intricate steps with the ease of professionals. Nerves melt away into pure enjoyment as the group links hands to dance in a circle, raising their arms and yelling, “Opa!” At the conclusion of the traditional portion of the evening, the girls dance in a circle with roses. They approach their mothers, give each a rose and head back to the front of the room. With everyone in position, the band strikes up “Signed,

ISRAEL will mark its 60th birthday with a mixture of solemnity and festivity, notes Gilon Levert, a 30-year-old Israeli. “Obviously, there’s a lot of tension in Israel right now,” he says. “We have the constant threat with Iran and of course, the Hamas guys and Hezbollah guys. At 60, we’re thinking, ‘Okay, how long can we go on this way? What will things be like for our children? Our grandchildren?’ “On the other hand,” Levert continues, “Israel’s 60th birthday is a time when Israelis will say, ‘You know what? We live one day at a time, and we’ve made it another year!’ It’s kind of a curse being Jewish, but you get on with it, and you celebrate, and you have barbecues.”

1 C dried chickpeas 1 C tahina 1/2 C lemon juice, or to taste 2 cloves garlic, or to taste 1 t salt freshly ground pepper, to taste 1/2 t ground cumin, or to taste 3 T extra virgin olive oil 2 T pine nuts dash of paprika or sumac 2 T chopped fresh parsley or cilantro Put raw chickpeas in bowl with cold water to cover and soak overnight. Drain and rinse chickpeas; then place them in a heavy pot with enough cold water to cover. Bring to a boil, then simmer, partially covered, for about an hour or until chickpeas are soft and the skin begins to separate. Add water as needed. Drain chickpeas, reserving about 1-1/2 cups of cooking liquid.

The elegant dining room is bathed in light .
THE three-story, center-hall Queen Ann Victorian stands proudly amidst mature trees on a wide Cleveland Heights street, an impressive monument of a bygone era. With its brown wood siding, cream-colored gingerbread trim, and expansive front porch, the house has a lot of “curb appeal.” The striking house came on the market in 2001, soon after Doug Katz opened his Shaker Square bistro, fire food & drink. He and his wife Karen were living nearby, and out of curiosity, they went to the realtor’s open house. Impressed with the home’s rich detailing, the couple made an offer, which the owner rejected. But after the house sat unsold for six more months, he was ready to negotiate. In the fall of 2002, the Katzes moved in. Doug says he always liked the history and craftsmanship of historic homes, but Karen calls herself a “closet” old-house lover, admitting she “never pictured myself living in one.” For Doug, part of the delight of owning the home has been researching its history: It was built on a double lot in 1904 by architect Rollin Hubby for Rufas P. Ranney, who was involved in real estate and shipbuilding. He lived in the eight-bedroom home with his wife Cornelia and their four children. After Rufas ran off to California, Cornelia was forced to sell off the extra lot and, in 1915, to move to a smaller house. A previous owner had destroyed the porch’s original herringbone brick floor and replaced its brick and stone half-wall with wrought iron railing, but the Katzes recently restored this area to its former grandeur. INSPIRATION struck Ferne and Norm Barr during a trip to Israel in April 2000. “We found this Agam,” says Ferne, pointing to an eye-catching piece of artwork by Israeli artist Yaacov Agam that greets visitors to the 3,200-square-foot Orange Village condominium. “It’s like molecules. We knew we wanted something that grabs you, so we shipped it home, framed. When you walk back and forth, it (the image) changes.” Captivated by the piece, the couple asked Nancy Benjamin, ASID, to design their condo’s décor around it. In response, Benjamin created green glass shelves and triangular lights that frame the Agam, which appears to float on the soft beige wall. Art collected during their travels, contemporary lighting, oneof-a-kind furnishings, and angular patterns create a certain ambience in the Barrs’ inviting home. Three-dimensional layered acrylic was the first work by Murf that the Barrs added to their collection. 80

AHHH, the joys of air travel. Flying can be a time to catch up on work or sleep, begin the party, read, or watch some movies. But what about for those traveling with kids? Before I had kids, I admit I would often see a parent with kids and pray they weren’t going to sit near me. Most parents know many air travelers feel a sense of dread when they see infants and young children board a plane. So, par-

When the pitas have blossomed into a meal-and-a-half, he wraps them in tissue paper and presents his creations to his hungry fans. “Beware,” he quips, “they’re addictive.” And indeed, each mouthful offers surprises, a kaleidoscope of flavors. Igal’s customers, a colorful mix of students, locals, truck drivers, soldiers, and lucky passersby, drift in and out all hours of the day. Some strike up conversations. Some savor sabichs while engrossed in front-page news or sports results. Others, barely pausing as they pass through, dig in as they take their leave. Many are return customers. A well-dressed woman, after ordering her portion, leans forward with a smile. “Remember me? I ate here twice but never paid.” She pays up, then drops a few shekels tip into the jelly jar glass on the countertop. In a brief moment when the kiosk has emptied out, Igal rushes out to round up change. Good thing. On his return, flocks of hungry people are waiting in line. When asked how many sabichs he serves a day, Igal, in typical Middle Eastern fashion, is evasive. “As many as I can,” he demurs, unwilling to press his luck.

THE Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan (MSRP: $31,600 - $36,900) has been completely redesigned for 2008. The German car manufacturer aimed to improve the vehicle’s handling, ride comfort and interior size. As a whole, the newly crafted C-Class hits most of its marks. The C300 Sport boasts responsive steering, stable handling, and a smooth ride quality during residential and freeway driving. Basic suspension design is the same as the previous model, but the components are lighter, allowing the vehicle to maintain its stability at higher speeds. Mercedes-Benz carried over last year’s V6 engine and again offers all-wheel drive. All 2008 C300 models are powered by a 3.0liter V6 that produces 228 hp and 221 lb.-ft. of torque. A sevenspeed automatic is standard on the C300 Luxury and optional on the C300 Sport, which comes with a six-speed manual. Mercedes estimates a 0-60-mph time of around seven seconds. All C-Class models come standard with rear-wheel drive except for the C300 4Matics, which are all-wheel-drive. The sedan’s carryover engine is not quite up to the power levels of its competitors.
