There's one difference among Porsche and Audi dealerships. It's Fred. It's the difference between involvement and commitment. While other dealers are involved in selling these automobiles, Fred Baker has been fully committed to carefully matching people with Porsche and Audi vehicles for decades. And he uses his experience as a renowned racecar driver to help customers fully appreciate these remarkable, high performance machines. If you're even considering the purchase or lease of a Porsche or Audi, you owe it to yourself to speak with Fred before you make a decision. He and his staff will be happy to introduce you to the enormous selection at Fred Baker Porsche Audi, the dealership's factory-certified service professionals, and a whole new way to experience automotive excellence. In 2007, Fred Baker became the only Cleveland-area car dealer to ever have been honored with a Pillar Award for community service. And he brings that same level of commitment to every customer who visits his dealership. Experience the difference, at Fred Baker Porsche Audi.

The dream of Europa International Salon & Spa became a reality four years ago with the opening of a salon and spa with an environment designed to nourish the whole person and achieve an overall sense of well-being. Europa has assembled a “dream team” of stylists, estheticians, and nail professionals. Not only is this the best team ever, they are a family whose closeness and caring for each other transcends to their clientele. Europa is happy to welcome back Kristy Lucas and Gina Evangelista. Both are team members who returned from out of town and were happy to rejoin the Europa family. Barbara Martorello is a master hair stylist and is both an American and International Board Certified Hair Colorist. She has been helping people perfect their appearance for 54 years. Many have been her clients for 40 years! She has seen the business evolve over the years from using pincurls many years ago to the modern techniques of today’s hair styling and color. When asked, “Why Europa?”, Barbara said, “The answer is simple. Europa’s warm and friendly atmosphere, a great team that functions like a family, a luxurious and inviting decor, and the best product available. She says, “I visualized being at Europa the moment I walked in the door, and felt totally at home.” Many years of experience, plus advanced training in New York, Chicago, and Las Vegas keep Barbara at the top of her game with the latest trends. This busy lady also practices Tai Chi daily, takes ballroom dancing and is an artist...in so many ways! The passion and commitment to personal attention at Europa is what sets them apart from any other spa. A truly unique experience with a distinctive European flavor.

A JEWISH woman who lives in a church? What’s the punch line? For Alyson Winick, who moved into the converted Cleveland Heights 1933 English Lutheran church two years ago, there is no punch line, only a huge payoff. One of the first things a visitor sees upon entering the main floor is a lectern, also original to the church, donated in someone’s memory. Now on wheels (a nice touch she added), Winick spins it around and voilá! The lectern is now a bar. Some of the home’s furnishings, including the sage living room couch, Winick purchased locally. She has owned several other decorative and functional items for years. This, she believed, was the raison d’être for buying the house! Chair on third floor landing offers a cozy reading nook.

Lighting experts soon set her straight. “It will look like a peanut up there,” she was told. “It wasn’t a big fixture, but in my mind’s eye, it was huge!” She also hadn’t considered such logistics as

So much so, in fact, she became involved in the industry several years ago through the indie film “Born into Brothels,” for which she raised $14,000 over the course of two nights in Cleveland. The money went to the children from India whose poignant story was told in the documentary. Her current project about to make the film festival rounds is “The Broken Soul Trilogy,” starring Judith Light and Danny Aiello; she is associate producer. And although she says she has made no money in film, she is amply rewarded by the “fun factor” and raising awareness of important issues. 32

AFTER a Northeast Ohio winter, there’s no more anticipated moment than early spring flowers pushing up through the snow. The best gardeners start as novices. Even the self-professed “black thumbs” who can’t keep a houseplant alive can learn this contagious craft. All it takes to enjoy gardening is a desire to create a personal space, a willingness to experiment and learn through mistakes, and the curiosity to see something you’ve started bloom into something beautiful. Or fragrant. Or delicious. Start by knowing your growing areas, both the established ones and sections you can imagine turning into something wonderful. Maybe you’ve envisioned a vegetable garden behind the garage, a fragrant climbing rose framing your front door, or a row of peonies lining the driveway. Different varieties of flowers and plants have their own needs for sun, soil, moisture and care. Once you know your space, you can choose plants that will thrive there.

SPRING is the perfect time to think about redoing your bedroom. Without spending a fortune redecorating, new linens in a rich palette of colors, patterns and luxurious materials will give your bedroom a burst of energy. “Spring bedding is always more romantic,” says Sharon Bleiweiss, manager of Yves Delorme at LaPláce. Luxury French linens feature soothing pastels and florals as well as leafy motifs in shades of green. If you still want your bedroom Zen-like, outfit a guest room in a zippier bedding ensemble. Start a new look for your bed with the foundation, the sheets. If you’ve shopped for bed linens recently, you’ve heard the great thread-count debate. When it comes to thread count – the amount of threads horizontally and vertically per square inch of fabric – buyer beware. “People are getting confused with the thread count game,” said Carolyne Bloch, owner of Block Bros. at Home. “It’s really become a marketing tool.” Many manufacturers dupe customers into believing they are getting a high thread count, say 600, she explains. But small type on the packaging can refer to “2-ply combed cotton.” That means the manufacturers are twisting fibers together and counting them twice, so the true count is 300. To 42

ENTER Tybee and Sheldon Zuckerman’s Asian-themed home, accessorized with thick Oriental carpets, black, bronze and white zabatons (cushions), a stone figure of Kuanyin (the goddess of fertility), and lots of ceramic and metal statuary, and it is easy to become an Occidental tourist in Beachwood. The furnishings and museum-quality Asian art pieces may be formal, but the Zuckermans are not. “Our home has always been open to gatherings of friends and family, and we enjoy sharing it with others,” insists Tybee, an enthusiastic hostess and a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. The couple has favored Asian art and furnishing since their first Brooklyn, N.Y., apartment in 1961. When they moved to Cleveland 40 years ago, they brought some of their pieces with them. “Shelly once accidentally beheaded a gold Japanese feudal Buddha, and a much-loved shoji screen fell apart,” Tybee says. “But other pieces have withstood the test of time.”

A stone figure of Kuanyin, the fertility goddess, greets guests in the entryway.

As original buyers in their development, the Zuckermans had a hand in designing their condo when it was built 19 years ago, so they were able to add touches that enhanced their Asian décor. “I always wanted a circular doorway leading into a main room,” says Tybee. “But structurally, that could not be done.” Instead, the Zuckermans had the builder carve out a perfect circle in the weight-bearing wall separating the kitchen and the dining room. An added bonus is that the opening allows light to spill into the dining room from the large window in the kitchen. In the dining room an Asian-style burled wood dining room table is complemented by tall chairs upholstered in a white-on-white fabric with an Asian design. Adding to the warmth of the area is an embroidered bell pull and a framed needlepoint Chinese scene, both Tybee’s handiwork. An intricate brass chandelier illuminates the dining room. “We found this, tarnished and dirty, in the basement of an antique shop on Larchmere,” explains Shelly. “It used to hang in a railroad station waiting room and had been disassembled into eight different pieces. We spent many hours assembling it and cleaning it up. This was a labor of love.” The dark, polished wood furnishings in the dining room and the white sofa in the living room create a yin and yang effect. Their first apartment, explains Tybee, was Japaneseinspired and had black wood furniture with purple and blue accents. “Later I began to introduce Chinese pieces, which meant using more color,” she says. 54

Warming drawer and two Shabbat mode ovens in the Weiss kitchen make preparing food for Shabbat easier.

Abrams notes. “They can be stacked or installed on either side of a sink,” he says. “You have completely segregated units.” Once the appliances are chosen, organization is the next key step. “People who have a kosher kitchen have so many utensils and platters,” Chinman said. “You really have to be well organized with lots of drawers, storage, and organizational tools.” Counters also play a role in building a kosher kitchen. Caesar stone or Corian both carry kosher certification because they are highly impermeable. Caesar stone, which is made in Israel, has a quartz base of 85% to 90%, while granite counters have only a 40% quartz base. When building a kosher kitchen, it’s imperative to make sure your designers know ahead of time so they can help you find exactly what you want, Chinman cautioned. “It’s a more complicated undertaking than most kitchens. It’s important that you get someone who really understands the different aspects of the working kitchen. It’s a heavily used kitchen.” For a list of Star-K approved appliances, visit www.star-k.com. “The synergy between Jake and Dan really drove the whole design of the room,” says Cohen. The young men’s common interest in Les Claypool led Dan to create the full-room mural, which, he explains, is evocative of the musician, both his “vibe” and his music. After talking with Jake, Dan came back and drew some rough sketches that were quickly approved by both mother and son. When prices escalate, new accessories give a classic garment (one already in your closet) a fresh look. I saw purses doubling as luggage and also clutches. Shoes are ballet style flat or in unwalkable heights. If the Italian shoe by Scarpe has any influence, think six-inch-high heels. And color is hot – hot – hot. Purses and shoes show up in brilliant fuchsia, hot yellows and bright chartreuse. New trends for spring? Long daytime dresses, high-waisted pants, and colors and prints galore. It will be interesting to see just how many of these looks make it into our Midwest wardrobes. I use couture look-alikes to bolster my own wardrobe. Good, wearable looks never go out of style, and I’ve never varied from that thought. L

His other grandfather, Simon Badinter, whose name he carries, didn’t want to believe the French would give up the Jews to the Nazis. “He said France was a country for human rights; they gave us (the Jews) rights,” recalls Badinter. “Big mistake.” Simon was rounded up by the infamous Klaus Barbie and taken first to a cell in Lyon, where he was horribly beaten, then to Birkenau, where he was mur-

they had captured Klaus Barbie and were taking him to Lyon. Mitterrand phoned his minister of justice, Robert Badinter, and asked him what he wanted to do with the prisoner. “My father told President Mitterrand to put him in the same cell where my grandfather was held,” Badinter notes solemnly. In the ten years he’s been in Northeast Ohio, Badinter has bought a house in Bath and settled in. His English is better, the French accent not as heavy, although still seductive. The eligible bachelor admits it’s not easy to become part of a community. “Even if you’re white, rich and Jewish, it’s a slow process,” he admits. “I’m still an immigrant.” But Cleveland fits his pace. Badinter keeps a hectic travel schedule during the week for work, so he’s happy to get back to his country house on Fridays. He’s made friends and thinks Cleveland really represents America, more than New York or Miami or Los Angeles. Would he want to live in France again? “No, no,” Badinter says adamantly. “Once you taste America, you don’t want to go back.” L 100
