IN EVERY issue of JStyle, we strive to introduce you to interesting new people; showcase trends in food, fashion and home décor; and take you on a journey to fun places around the world and in our own backyard. However, we don’t always get to hear feedback from you. So it’s an unexpected pleasure when a JStyle story has a life beyond the page. This happened with “Cleveland Collects!” a piece in our May issue that included 12 local men and women with a passion for collecting. Not only did we hear from other collectors and people who loved the article, but one gentleman went the extra mile by bringing in an obsolete Kodak Disc 4100 camera and asking us to pass it on as a gift to antique camera collector Lynn Katz Danzig. We were all touched by the gesture. What will be the next story to strike a chord? Will it be our look at veganism and the people who choose this way of life for ethical and health reasons? Will you enjoy meeting a couple who “smart-sized” when they moved into their elegant Pepper Pike home or a jewelry designer with a passion for mixing metals? The Gordon Square Arts District, along Detroit between W. 58th and W. 73rd Streets, has become a thriving destination for theater, film, shopping and dining. With its cool, urban vibe, the pedestrian-friendly area quickly became one of our favorite spots in Cleveland. 10

12:15 p.m: Our first stop is the Capitol Theatre, a renovated movie house built in 1921. It’s quiet there in the early afternoon, as matinee moviegoers in 3-D glasses (like the ones we’re sporting here) are enthralled by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” so we explore the Deco lobby, chat about upcoming films, and head on our way.

12:45: Shopping! We wander into TurnStyle Boutique, which just moved to Gordon Square in May, and are immediately smitten with the trendy and playful but sophisticated women’s clothing. As we try on necklaces and headbands, owner Terrilynn Amos praises the district for being so supportive of its merchants and creating a cooperative business community.

Next door to TurnStyle, we discover duoHOME … and what a find! It’s filled with reasonably priced unique home furnishings and eclectic gifts. Margi gravitates toward adorable children’s books and growth charts for her angel, 21-month-old Devin, while Janet gravitates toward pet-themed tchotchkes and picture frames for her angel, Jake the wonder dog. Coowner Tim Kempf gives us tons of recommendations of Gordon Square nighttime hot spots like Luxe Kitchen & Lounge, XYZ the Tavern, and the Battery Park Wine Bar.

1:30: So hungry! Down 65th aways, we find the glorious patio at Stone Mad Pub. In the stone grotto oasis with its sculptural fountain; outdoor fireplace; and cozy, shaded seating nooks, we devour an enormous, juicy burger and a succulent cod sandwich. After lunch we duck inside the wood-paneled pub to play a quick game of bocce on Stone Mad’s court. A bocce court inside a restaurant, you ask? Absolutely, we say. ¢

2:45: An anchor of the district, Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) has long been staging some of the region’s most thoughtprovoking and innovative theater pieces. We are lucky enough to be invited by education director Chris Siebert and associate Faye Hargate to watch a rehearsal of “Imagine Home,” an original play by CPT’s STEP (Student Theatre Enrichment Program). Young actors E’Lyric Christopher, 14, inset, Da’shawn George, 17, and William Stewart, 16, put on quite a show for us.

4:00: By now, JStyle readers have probably figured out we love our sweets, so a visit to old-timey Sweet Moses soda fountain and treat shop is inevitable. We indulge in homemade cookie dough ice cream and hand-spun chocolate shakes (with whipped cream and a cherry on top!), served on doilies, while soda jerks in oldfashioned paper hats ring up customers on oversized, antique metal cash registers. (By the time we’re done, we have no room for more treats from our favorite coffee shop Gypsy Beans & Bakery. Next time.) We are more than happy to follow the instructions on the sign in Sweet Moses’s charming dining room: “Slow down and take a step back in time.” To learn more about the places we visited, see p. 14. L

western edge of the Gordon Square Arts District. 78th Street Studios, in a former warehouse space, takes up two city blocks and contains 12 art galleries plus another 13 artists’ studios and showrooms. The complex also contains smARTspace at 78th, a 6,000-sq.-ft. space that can be rented for meetings, parties and even wedding receptions. Every room and connecting hallway of the space is filled with art, much of it by local artists. As we arrive, the gallery owners and artists of 78th Street Studios are prepping Third Friday, an open house on – you guessed it – the third Friday of every month. If only we could stay for hors d’oeuvres and mingling, but our tired feet and full stomachs remind us that it’s time to head back east. Gordon Square, we’ll be back soon! L

and LaGuardia is so familiar it seems less an interstate flight than a customary commute. And who can blame us for flocking to this magnificent city? With its spectacular cuisine, swank shops and worldclass museums, New York is an ever-evolving metropolis that always has something fresh and fabulous to flaunt. Browse the boutiques of Fifth Avenue and NoLiTa, while the day away in Central Park, stroll along the High Line, and call upon the city’s diverse array of galleries and museums. All this, in the space of just 23 Manhattan square miles. While there, save time to hop on a southbound train to that other must-see borough – Brooklyn, baby. Kick off your New York whirl with these up-to-the-minute experiences.

The urban jungle gym that is New York can compete recreationally with the best of them for outdoor sports, as evidenced by the tremendous variety of activities for sport and nature enthusiasts here. Rent a bike in Central Park from the Loeb Boathouse at 72nd St. for $10/hour, whirl around Rockefeller Center on ice skates in the winter, or hire a kayak and spend a day paddling along the Hudson River with a pal. For kayaking, go to Pier 40, Pier 96 or 72nd St. and rent a boat through the New York City Downtown Boathouse (www.downtown boathouse.org.) or head to Chelsea Piers and check out Manhattan Kayak Company (www.manhattankayak.com). Asia Society at 70th and Park is worth exploring not only for its excellent gift shop and atrium restaurant but for exhibitions such as the “Ai Weiwei: New York Photographs.” This groundbreaking exhibition displays the photographs of recently released Chinese dissident Weiwei’s 1980s East Village days, chronicling events like Wigstock and neighborhood figures such as Allen Ginsburg and a group of today’s Chinese cultural leaders who were at the time struggling in obscurity.

Since June, the long-awaited second section of New York’s High Line – the name for the restored former elevated railroad tracks on the West Side – has been open for the enjoyment of New Yorkers and visitors alike. The walking path is lined with perennials, grasses, shrubs and trees chosen for their hardiness, textural and color variation, and focus on native species. The first portion opened in June 2009 and runs along abandoned train tracks from Gansevoort St. in the Meatpacking District to 20th St., while the new section encompasses a long stretch of prime lounging locales ideal for weekend relaxation. Ending at 30th St., the new section adds 10 blocks and doubles the total length of the High Line to one mile. The now-famous park ambles through some of Manhattan’s most trendy neighborhoods and in just two short years, has drawn more than 4 million visitors, who come to stroll along the expanse and see the great views of the Hudson.

Soak up some culture The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has reopened in a stunning six-floor building, and for $20 ($25 beginning Sept. 1), you’ll see works from every celebrated contemporary artist you can think of. Also check out The Jewish Museum, housed in a French Gothic chateau-style mansion at 109 Fifth Ave. at 92nd St. Since 1904, The Jewish Museum has explored art through the lens of social history, with exhibitions such as current “Maya Zack: Living Room,” in which the artist uses large-scale computer-generated 3D images accompanied by sound to evoke a Jewish family’s apartment from 1930s Berlin. The

Your lifestyle should inform the design of one of the most important rooms in the house by jennifer daddario REMODELING a home is likely to be a time-consuming, stressful process. As a new homeowner, I’ve spent a good amount of time agonizing over just which cabinets would be perfect for my gutted kitchen. And of course, everything else that goes into a remodel: countertops, appliances, paint. Don’t even get me started on how long it took me to decide on paint! I managed to get through the kitchen remodeling process relatively unscathed, as I had my trusty sidekick (Mom) helping me make decisions. But to make their remodel pain-free and easy, many Clevelanders turn to the expertise of interior designers to create a kitchen space that fits their tastes, ideas, and most importantly, lifestyle. Beachwood residents Drs. Carol and Mike Macknin recently worked with Laura Friedman of Interiors by Laura Friedman to update the kitchen in their home, which

was built in 1957. The goal was to create a sleeker, more modern and organized space. Their “dated” kitchen didn’t leave much storage space, a necessity for the two doctors’ hectic lives, so Friedman worked with the Macknins and a custom cabinetmaker to really revamp the cabinets for better organization. “Because it was an older kitchen, it didn’t have the kind of function and organization that they needed,” Friedman explains. “They needed more organization and more light; they wanted a natural look.” To solve the organization issue, Friedman removed an old pantry, which added more width to the kitchen. In the new space, Friedman installed a double oven, a feature Carol had always wanted. A new floor-to-ceiling pantry was built in another part of the kitchen; it is “much more functional,” Friedman explains. “It has narrow shelving so everything is seen. It’s all right there; you don’t have to search.” ¢

In addition, the family removed the wall between the kitchen and den, replacing it with glass doors, which opened up the kitchen and created a better flow between the two rooms. The homeowners are avid collectors of antiques and unique accessories, Friedman notes. “We highlighted the area (above the stove) with beautiful carved wooden moldings that act as a display area for a few pieces,” she says. “We paid a lot of attention to the small details.” To marry function and the couple’s style, Friedman designed a large, French-inspired armoire pantry cupboard, which is a focal point of the room. It holds a TV, food and some kitchen utensils. The layout of the kitchen was also re-worked, removing a peninsula that broke up the room. Instead, Friedman suggested an island, which created more work space and a better flow. During her 28 years as an interior designer in Cleveland, Friedman has developed a tried-and-true method to work with clients to create spaces perfect for their tastes, lifestyles and home. Long discussions with the clients play a large role, but the exterior architectural style of the home also helps Friedman decide what is best suited for the interior designs. “You don’t want to take a home that looks like Versailles and put a Cape Cod kitchen in,” she says. “A good designer can introduce you to many new resources and open your eyes to all the possibilities, using the newest and most interesting products available,” Friedman says. “But I think the best thing a designer can do for you is incorporate a design that fits with the architectural style and integrity of the space and offer you a design that is fresh but will remain timeless.” L

WHEN Linda and Bob Katz moved from their gracious four-bedroom Shaker Heights home into their custom-built house at Sterling Lakes in Pepper Pike four years ago, the couple did not downsize - they “smart-sized,” says Linda Katz. “Our house is 1,000sq.-ft. bigger than our Parnell (Road) home (in Shaker) and is configured to fit our lifestyle now,” she explains. “It is an adult home.” Linda has no regrets about making the move, she says. “We have created something that works for us and a home we enjoy coming back to each day after work.” Abundant wall space and natural light provide a perfect backdrop for the couple’s extensive art collection. “Paintings look different here than in our other home,” Linda says. “And it is a joy to wake up every morning to see sunshine streaming through our large windows in each room.” ¢

LINDA shares many traits with Martha Stewart, a woman she admires. Like Stewart, Linda is an exceptional hostess; sets a gorgeous table; and has a large, impressive collection of Majolica pottery. She began collecting the vibrantly hued tinglazed Italian pottery 30 years ago after reading about it in Stewart’s first book Entertaining. Each piece of Majolica that sits on the tiered breakfront in her dining room has a story. Linda points to an antique pitcher she found in a market in Paris. The woman she bought it from made sure she was Jewish before she sold her the piece. “The handle is shaped like the tree of life, and the design on the pitcher is of a Jewish wedding and includes a Mogan David,” Linda says. 34

ONE of Linda’s favorite rooms in her home is the intimate front “parlor.” The focal point of the room is a painting by artist Janet Hill of the character Nana in a novel by French author Émile Zola. Linda found it eight years ago in Stratford, Ontario. “I created this room around the portrait,” Linda says. She loves the room most, however, because it contains many of her mother Florence Mortiz’s possessions, including a reupholstered loveseat her mother bought the first year she was married and her mother’s Lalique crystal collection. A portrait of Mortiz and her favorite books also grace the redpainted room. “Whenever I come in here, I feel so comfortable, because I am surrounded by memories,”

Linda says. “It’s as though my mother is sitting here with me.”

OFF the Katzes’ bedroom is a small cozy sitting room. The couple whitewashed the solid oak floors, and local artist Tim Hass handpainted laurel leaves along the flooring. Professionally painted watercolor family “photos” fill the walls.

Linda designed the sitting room to be a practical bridge between the bedroom and the bathroom. “When my husband gets up early in the morning and uses the bathroom, he does not wake me.” ¢ CLEVELAND JEWISH NEWS

THE KATZES consider beauty just one attribute of their home. They strove for a home that was functional with easy-to-clean surfaces. All the wood floors in their Pepper Pike home require only a dry mop for easy clean-up; their outdoor siding is made of hardy board, which only has to be painted every 15 years; the windows are double-paned so they are easy to clean and to open; and the kitchen counters are engineered quartz.

BOB, an avid gardener, traded in the pool and wooded backyard he had in his previous home for an outdoor garden oasis. He now spends hours during the growing season tending his dahlias, tomatoes, basil and dill plants and lush grape arbor. He even added a small stocked fishpond – to the delight of his four grandchildren. L

CLEVELAND restaurateur and top chef Sergio Abramof has done Mother Nature one better. By adding a dollop of burrata, a creamy Italian cheese, to a plate of seasoned heirloom tomatoes, he has created a mouth-watering, healthy summer repast that adds elegance and ease to any meal – especially when dining alfresco. “This summer dish is fantastic as an appetizer served with crunchy bread or eaten as a dinner salad mixed with Italian greens like arugula or radicchio,” said Abramof, owner of Sérgio’s in University Circle and Sérgio’s SERAVÁ at Shaker Square. “No matter how it is served, it is absolutely delicious.” Burrata (which means buttered in Italian) is made from mozzarella and cream. The outer shell is solid mozzarella, while the inside contains mozzarella and cream, giving it an unusual, soft texture. It is usually served fresh at room temperature. Abramof buys his burrata from a supplier who specializes in European foods, but it is available at Whole Foods. L

Susan Kleinstub creates one-of-a-kind jewelry

ARMED with a hammer, some drill bits and a soldering torch, Susan Kleinstub is on a mission to tell a story: Your story. The 51-year-old artist behind Susan K. Jewelry creates mixed-metal accessories customized to each client’s personality. “They’re all one-ofa-kind, because each piece tells its own story,” she says. “My clients tend to be people who really seek out handmade, which I love.” Metal head: Kleinstub’s charm necklaces and bracelets, dog tag-style necklaces, rings, and earrings usually include a combination of metals: fine silver, copper, brass, or even occasionally gold. She also uses precious metal clay, a substance that can be molded like clay, but when it’s fired in a kiln or by torch, its impurities burn off, leaving an almost pure silver. Her pieces run from $15 for a single charm to $300 for a more elaborate piece. Mixing metals is just one of Kleinstub’s favorite techniques. She also loves to create texture on metal by handstamping, using smithing tools or any kind of hammer or bit she can find. And then she might just throw in gemstones. “I’m a pearl girl,” she laughs. “I use them a lot.” Despite her metal mania, one of Kleinstub’s most popular items is

That’s personal: “Right now, personalization is really hot,” says Kleinstub, who handstamps charms with everything from her customers’ children’s (or pets’) names; to symbols like a peace sign, lotus or chai; to inspirational words and phrases. Kleinstub enjoys customizing pieces for clients “because each one has a story,” she says. “Some are sad; some are happy. I feel like I touched their lives.” If I had a hammer: Susan’s husband of 25 years, builder Alan Kleinstub, recalls accompanying Susan on a trip to buy a jeweler’s hammer when the couple were dating. strings beads; textures, hammers and stamps metal; and solders using a hand torch. Jeweler’s journey: “Growing up in Cleveland Heights, I was exposed to many different art forms,” Kleinstub says. “There were arts and crafts all over in the parks. I took all kinds of classes.” In her teens, she received a gift of a rock tumbler that came with findings to make jewelry. “That was it,” she says. Kleinstub honed her jewelry-making skills in classes and on her own until she had her sons, Aaron, now 22 and a music producer in New York City, and Matt, now 20 and attending Kent State University. Her creative expression switched to making appliqué children’s clothing she would sell to other parents at the boys’ schools, but as they got older and busier with their own pursuits, she put that aside, too. About 10 years ago, Kleinstub decided to dive back into jewelry. “As (the boys) got even older, I said, I can do something for myself again.” One of the signature pieces Kleinstub uses to advertise her business (and that she wears herself) is a personalized necklace with domed pendants imprinted with her sons’ names. “I feel like I’m holding them close to my heart,” she says. Creative circle: “My whole life, everybody around me is creative,” Kleinstub raves. Beside her family, Kleinstub has found a supportive community by joining Cleveland Handmade, a fraternity of local artists who sell their wares as a “team” on open forum art site Etsy.com and occasionally organize local art shows. “Everything changed for me when I joined the group,” she says. “We have great camaraderie. We do shows together. Everyone supports each other. It’s nice to get that ‘good job,’ and we inspire each other.” Around the world: Kleinstub has sold personalized pieces to clients across the globe, thanks to the reach of Etsy. “I love to think that pieces are walking around in Australia or Canada or the UK,” she says. But selling at local art shows and luncheons and teaching beading classes hold their own appeal. She enjoys becoming friends with repeat clients. “My favorite part is talking with people,” she says. There’s an app for that: “I can be anywhere, and an idea will pop into my head,” Kleinstub says. She used to keep a notepads handy or risk forgetting about the unusual shape or pattern that inspired her. Now, with her iPhone, Kleinstub types notes into her phone, takes pictures, and sends herself emails. “There’s all sorts of inspiration all around, if you take the time to notice,” she says. L

Leslie Davidson began following a mostly vegan diet to be healthier. VegiTerranean in Akron in 2007. Prominent doctors extol the virtues of a vegan diet in books and on television. Jewish actress Alicia Silverstone published her well-received vegan cookbook The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet. No longer thought of as wacky, veganism has gone … well, if not quite mainstream, certainly much more accepted by the meat-eating majority. The reasons for choosing a vegan lifestyle – which means not eating or wearing anything that once had a face (no meat, chicken, fish, dairy, leather) – are varied. Once embraced purely for ethical purposes, many people are now going vegan for their health. Leslie Davidson and her husband Bernie of Bratenahl began following a mostly vegan regimen the day after hearing Dr. Neal Barnard speak about the benefits of a low-fat, vegan diet at John Carroll University in April.

“Eating this way helps to reduce heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and diabetes,” says Davidson. “We were not meant to be dairy or meat eaters.” In fact, some doctors believe a vegan diet can reverse certain diseases. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, the preeminent clinician and researcher at the Cleveland Clinic, published Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure, which is based on the results of his 20-year nutritional study on eating plant-based foods (and includes 150 recipes).
