ife insurance is not typically a parent’s first thought when it comes to insuring their children.

Collin Doyle, an insurance agent with State Farm in Mayfield Village, and Nancy Schoop, claims manager, and Rob Strachan, account manager at StrachanNovak Insurance Services in Twinsburg, all said parents could never be too careful.

“Tragedies can happen anytime,” Schoop said.

“Whether it’s accidental or sickness, you’re still going to have final expenses. You can lock in really low rates that children can carry with them until they are older.

It’s something I did not do for my two sons and I truly wish I had. The sooner you can buy it, you should.”

Schoop said parents don’t like to consider the possibility of something happening to a child, but purchasing life insurance while young has benefits.

She said other family members could purchase life insurance for a child as a gift.

Strachan said life insurance could turn out to be a more meaningful gift than another toy.

“I have young kids and for many other parents, you get so many plastic toys,” he said. “We received a gift from the grandparents and it was a whole life policy.

It’s a lot better than receiving something plastic that they are going to only play with a couple times.”

Schoop said she thinks all parents should at least consider buying child life insurance, although she

knows many families with young children tend to have strapped budgets.

“We as a society have spent a lot of money on what we pay for coffees or cell phones, and with that, you could have a life insurance policy for your child,” she said. “A lot of people in their minds don’t want to think or talk about something happening to their child. (Life insurance) is probably one of the best things you can do for your child.”

Strachan said there are two main reasons parents should consider life insurance for a child: to pay funeral expenses and to have the ability to continually purchase life insurance.

“There are people who say they could save the money and put it into an emergency fund, but you can’t guarantee insurability when (a child) is a young adult,” he said. “You can also bundle these plans with home and auto to save more money.”

Doyle said another benefit of purchasing a policy when a child is younger is its ability to grow in value over a longer period of time.

“Purchasing an individual policy for your kids protects their future insurability and, depending on the type of policy purchased, may build cash value insure the policy,” he said. “There are certain policies that are popular with parents where they can pay for 10, 15 and 20 years and the policy will be fully paid up.

“This is a policy that the child can have and keep forever and has already been paid for. There are also endorsements that can be placed on these policies where the child can add certain amounts of life

insurance as they get in their late teens, twenties and thirties.”

Doyle said when it comes to insuring family members, parents should be considered first priority so the children will be financially prepared if something were to happen. But, if the family budget allows, parents should explore adding life insurance policies for their children.

Doyle, Strachan and Schoop all said parents should consult their insurance agents before committing to anything.

“I recommend talking with an insurance professional to decide which options make the most sense,” Doyle said. “Life insurance is not a one size fits all, it takes a lot of questions and answers to determine what the best solution is for each client and well as determining if it fits within the budget.”

O

ne of the biggest insurers in the Affordable Care Act’s marketplaces is warning the federal government that it must preserve cost-sharing payments for low-income customers to avoid hurting millions of people.

Centene Corp. said July 25 that a better-than-expected performance in those individual insurance markets prompted it to beat Wall Street expectations in the second quarter and raise its forecast for 2017.

But Chairman and CEO Michael Neidorff, like other insurance executives, is worried about the fate of cost-sharing reduction payments that ease expenses like deductibles for people with low incomes. Money for those payments has made it into Congressional bills that aim to dismantle the Obama-era law, but the fate of that legislation is uncertain.

Republicans have challenged those payments in court, and President Donald Trump has offered no guarantees that they will continue beyond this month.

Neidorff said those payments and some other government support will be crucial to stabilize the exchanges, which have been marred by dwindling choices and soaring prices.

“Any intentional act to stop these ... payments does not advance the debate on how to fix our health care delivery system,” he said. “It only hurts the millions of Americans who currently have affordable health care insurance in the marketplace.

“The leadership in Washington bears the responsibility to ensure that is not happening.”

Centene covers more than 1 million people through the law’s state-based health insurance exchanges, which let people shop for coverage and then buy a plan with help from an income-based tax

credit. While big national carriers like UnitedHealth and Aetna have retreated from this market, Centene has switched to growth mode.

The St. Louis-based insurer plans to expand next year into exchanges in Nevada, Kansas and Missouri, with growth in its home state filling a void in 25 counties that had no exchange choices for shoppers.

Analysts have said Centene does well on the exchanges because it sticks with customers it knows. The insurer specializes in managing the state and federally funded Medicaid program for the poor. On the exchanges, it markets to low-income customers in areas where it has a Medicaid presence.

“They came at the exchanges from a core Medicaid business and built (care) networks around largely the same providers,” said Jefferies analyst David Windley.

People with low incomes are eligible for large tax credits that help keep their

premiums affordable and shield them from big tax hikes. That makes it more likely they keep up with their insurance payments and renew their coverage.

Neidorff didn’t spell out on July 25what his company would do if the cost-sharing reduction payments end.

But other insurers have said premiums will soar in many markets.

Leerink analyst Ana Gupte said in a recent note that she expects more insurers to leave the markets if the future of payments isn’t clarified by September, and that could include Centene reducing its presence. But both she and Neidorff think the funding ultimately will be preserved.

Neidorff said that he thinks congressional leaders won’t have the appetite to leave the “most vulnerable populations” without coverage.

“I am personally, and I think corporately we are, convinced that when all the dust settles there will be subsidies in some form,” he said.

W

hen disaster strikes, people rarely seem to be prepared.

Even though they have insurance for their home, auto, motorcycle, property or rental, sometimes those plans aren’t enough.

According to two local insurance agents, Michelle Hirsch, senior vice president at Brunswick Cos. in Fairlawn, and Nicole Ziegler, personal lines team lead at Althans Insurance Agency in South Russell, additional coverage is out there and affordable.

Umbrella insurance is coverage that goes over an underlying coverage, hence the word umbrella.

Hirsch said an example is auto insurance, which covers damages to a certain amount and anything over that amount would come out of pocket.

“An umbrella is that extra level of liability protection, and it goes over and above the auto and home policy limits,” she said. “It’s important because accidents happen, and if someone

sues you (or any member of your household) for a significant amount of money, those dollars have to come from somewhere. For people who want to protect their wealth, an umbrella protects current assets as well as future earning potential.”

Hirsch and Ziegler both said umbrella coverage covers many things, including driving accidents, swimming pool accidents, property damage outside the home or damage to property from rented tools.

Hirsch said even if something

happens to a family member outside the home, umbrella insurance follows that person.

Ziegler and Hirsch both said everyone who is currently insured could benefit from at least looking into an umbrella insurance plan because the price is worth the coverage. Ziegler said most umbrella plans could cost about $200 per year, which figures to be less than $20 per month for an additional $1 million of liability coverage.

Umbrella plans are not widely known, Hirsch said, because it’s not required like other types of policies.

“You have to have home insurance to secure a mortgage or auto insurance to even get the car off of the lot,” she said.

“Umbrella insurance is an important addition to your current insurance portfolio but it’s often a coverage people just aren’t educated about.

“There is a learning gap in terms of what you do have and what you should have (in terms of coverage). No matter

what stage of life, the conscientious approach is to always have an umbrella.

For a couple hundred dollars (a year), you’re adding millions of dollars in liability protection. It’s the economically responsible thing to do.

“I can’t tell you how many clients we have taken on over the years that do not have umbrella insurance at all and once we truly explain what it is and their exposures, they want it as fast as they can get it.

Hirsch said umbrella insurance is not just for the wealthy.

In fact, Ziegler said many people think they won’t be sued because they aren’t millionaires.

“You don’t have to have a lot of money to be sued,” she said. “Many people don’t think they are in the financial situation to be sued for a large sum of money. But umbrella insurance can protect you in those situations.”

ob Strachan, account manager at Strachan-Novak Insurance Services in Twinsburg, said that he thinks his firm can attribute its success to a familyorientated way of working. The firm, which recently was recognized by Grange Insurance as a top-performing independent Strachan insurance agency, is in its third generation of Strachan family leadership, which started with Strachan’s grandfather in 1948.

“We’ve got people within our organization that have been here for more than 45 years and there has always been a sense of pride with what we do here,” he said. “People don’t buy an insurance policy because they have to. They buy one because they want to protect their assets.”

Strachan said the firm focuses mostly on personal insurance like home, auto, motorcycle and recreational vehicle, as well as commercial insurance for manufacturers, restaurants and homebased businesses. The firm also handles benefits, like Medicare, life insurance, health insurance and group insurances, he said.

“Our motto is that ‘we don’t sell insurance, we buy it better,’” he said.

“Our lineage runs deep and wide. And in 2017, we’re still trying to instill that into new people that run through our

organization.”

When considering its generational and family-oriented business, Strachan said it all stems from a sense of pride – pride in the brand, in their customers and in the work the firm performs.

“It’s the sense of pride and the family name that you want to continue to protect and do the right thing,” he said.

“My grandfather and father are both really respected within the insurance industry in Ohio. So, I find that driving me to continue to have that family name and to continue to be stronger than what we were in previous decades.”

Strachan said a lot of the firm’s current and future successes depend on the ability to handle customers with ease. As management is generational, customers grow with them on a generational basis as well.

“We get to know people and that they feel like they aren’t just calling a 1-800 number and that we truly care,” he said. “A little over 60 percent of our new business comes from referrals. If we attribute our good service and the ability to stay on top of the industry, we will continue to get those referrals from our client base.”

Strachan said when he joined Strachan-Novak in 2011 there were eight employees. Now, there are 22 employees.

“We’re looking to grow and acquire more clients organically,” he said.

“We don’t want to lose focus of what we’re doing now either. We’re poised and growing to be one of the last few insurance agencies around.”

Medicare made easy WILLIAM HAAS

M

edicare. It’s a word that causes confusion and even a headache for many people approaching 65. The question is what do I do first, who do I call and where do I go?

Those eligible for Medicare must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident for at least five consecutive years and 65 years Haas old or older, unless there is a qualifying disability. When turning 65, Medicare provides for an initial enrollment period three months before the person’s birthday, the month of the person’s birthday and three months after the person’s birthday. However, before a person can enroll in any Medicare plan, the person must have applied for and obtained a Medicare card with Part A and Part B, also known as Original Medicare. If a person already receives Social Security, the person automatically receives a card when turning 65. If they are not drawing Social Security, the person can go to a Social Security office to apply or visit medicare.gov.

The coverage options take us back to kindergarten, where we learned our ABC’s.

Part A: covers inpatient hospital care plus additional services.

Part B: covers physician services and some preventive services.

Part C: Medicare Advantage. This is where a professional certified for Medicare plans is needed to guide you through the maze of plan options. Be sure to ask about value added benefits such as Silver Sneakers, hearing aids, Dental and Vision.

Part D: Prescription drug coverage.

Medicare prescription drug coverage is received by either joining a Medicare prescription drug plan or through a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes drug coverage. Even if few or no drugs are used, it’s important to purchase a plan because there is a penalty if you do not enroll when eligible. This penalty will last a lifetime and add to monthly costs. It is important to provide your professional a current list of your medications and ask them to determine which plan will include all your current drugs at the best price.

Medicare supplements are letter plans that fill gaps in Original Medicare A and B. The most popular plans are Plan F and G. One of the most frequently asked questions is, “When I choose my initial plan, will I be stuck with that plan forever.” The answer is absolutely not.

During annual open enrollment, which occurs between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7, a different Medicare Advantage Plan or a Part D prescription drug plan can be selected. Since formularies change each year, it is recommended to review options with a professional that is certified for Medicare plans. There is typically no charge for an annual review of your benefits.

There are numerous Medicare plans to choose from, but as you are considering each type of plan, it is important you feel comfortable with the cost of the plan, cost of any co-pays and how you will receive the provided services.

Franklin County spends $200,000 to buy insurance for cyberattacks

COLUMBUS – Franklin County, which includes the capital city of Columbus, is spending $200,000 on an insurance policy to cover cyberattacks.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Franklin County’s $10 million policy will provide protection for the increasing worldwide threat. The Franklin County Data Center spends about $3 million a year on cyber security.

Such attacks are especially worrisome to government entities that keep all kinds of personal information on people, including their names, addresses and Social Security numbers.

The insurance would pay for internal security improvements in the event of a hack and specialists who track cyber invasions and repair and restore computer systems.

The Franklin County administrator calls the insurance a “belt and suspenders” approach to protecting the county.
