Cleveland’s Future Starts Here T

here’s a tremendous amount of history among us. When you visit the Cleveland Jewish News digital archives at cjn.org/archive, you’ll discover nearly 130 years of Cleveland’s rich Jewish history, as chronicled in the pages of the Cleveland Jewish News and each of its predecessor newspapers. That’s a lot of Jewish history. Speaking of history, thanks to the philanthropic Mandel brothers – through their Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation – the Cleveland History Center of the Western Reserve Historical Society now boasts “Cleveland Starts Here.” As was recently reported in the CJN, this new permanent exhibition is meant to serve as a starting point for people to explore the social, creative, economic, political and cultural history of Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. Stephen H. Hoffman, who serves as the Mandel foundation’s vice president, told the CJN, “Cleveland Starts Here will inspire pride in our community and brings to life the stories of our own town.” He’s right, and part of that pride stems from the region’s entrepreneurial culture. In fact, a thread that ties together “Cleveland Starts Here” and the CJN Archives is one of innovation. Whether you’re reading decades-worth of articles about innovations of and businesses opened by Jewish entrepreneurs or viewing an exhibition item about business titans that once called Cleveland home, such as John D. Rockefeller, it’s easy to see Cleveland’s past is built on hard work, tenacity, persistence and creativity. As for the future? Well, that’s where LaunchHouse comes in. The team at LaunchHouse is playing a vital role in helping entrepreneurs achieve their goals and realize their dreams, which

in turn begins the process of writing the history books of tomorrow. In 2012, LaunchHouse created a nationally recognized technology accelerator program designed to cultivate top entrepreneurial talent through senior-level mentorship, strategic business development resources and seed funding. A year later, LaunchHouse introduced LEAP, a first-of-itskind accelerator program for high school students. Next came a collaboration with OneCommunity to create a “fiberhood” — a neighborhood of ultrafast Internet connections — on Lee Road in Shaker Heights. And In 2014, LaunchHouse partnered with NASA to create another first in Ohio: a hardware accelerator program to invest in 10 hardware companies. That’s just a sample of what LaunchHouse does for Northeast Ohio’s entrepreneurial community, which is why the Cleveland Jewish News is proud to partner with them on Bootstrap Bash. This meaningful showcase highlights entrepreneurs who are building products, businesses, visions and dreams. In the process, they’re also authoring the region’s future in a way that will allow generations to come to read about them in the CJN Archive or experience them at a museum exhibition.

LaunchHouse Bootstrap Bash Guests,

T

hank you for supporting and attending our Seventh Annual Bootstrap Bash! We have enjoyed collaborating with our friends at the Cleveland Jewish News for the second year in a row for this great event. The Bootstrap Bash wouldn’t be possible without the help of Kevin Adelstein, Adam Mandell, Gina Lloyd, Andy Isaacs and many others from the Cleveland Jewish News team. In 2018, LaunchHouse will be celebrating its 10th year in business. LaunchHouse was founded in 2008 by CEO Todd Goldstein and Dar Caldwell. At the time, the two were in their mid-20s and had just moved back to Cleveland after college. They were distraught by the lack of opportunities and resources for aspiring entrepreneurs. At a time when many of their peers were moving out of Cleveland, Todd and Dar focused their energy on making a change in their hometown. The two set up shop in a small room above Geraci’s Restaurant in University Heights. An ad on Craigslist was posted as a call-to-action for anyone aspiring to become an entrepreneur, mentor or adviser to meet up at their office. Word started to spread and entrepreneurs started to gather. They hosted brainstorming sessions and gathered small amounts of investment capital to continue developing promising ideas. A community formed and they quickly outgrew their small office space. In the short period of time, they learned what entrepreneurs valued and how LaunchHouse could best help them succeed. Entrepreneurs valued having a supportive community and building relationships with one another. This led the LaunchHouse team to grow and evolve across Cleveland. Over the years, LaunchHouse has continued to provide support for our community members. From our three accelerator programs to our high school and middle school summer programming and Knowledge Now conferences, LaunchHouse has always been big on giving entrepreneurs the tools they need to have the best shot at success. Since our last Bootstrap Bash, here are a few of our accomplishments, thanks to your support: • 16 Lunch + Learns about topics ranging from protecting your business’ online reputation to lessons from failure • 4 Startup Standup pitch nights, providing a platform for people to share their ideas and get feedback from the community • 17 Happy Hours, connecting entrepreneurs and showcasing local startups like Kelsey Elizabeth Cakes and Dr. Shultz • Brought 1 Million Cups back to Cleveland after being dormant for nearly two years • Hosted a TechStar’s Startup Weekend, the first in Cleveland in three years • Hosted two Get Your Business Online workshops in partnership with Google • Held two Map It Out Business Roadmap workshop series, lead by member Sue Marrone • Hosted three Coworking in CLE Meetups, introducing Clevelanders to coworking

• Hosted more than a dozen brainstorming and feedback sessions over lunch • Worked with student interns at Shaker Heights High School and Hiram College. There are countless other accomplishments that we can’t quantify. We can’t always measure the impact of our community or the new friendships that were formed; the introductions and connections that changed everything for a small business; the ideas and business improvements that come from a brainstorming session among members; the uplifted spirits that come from a casual conversation over coffee and snacks in our coworking space; the increased productivity that a founder experiences when he or she has a creative workspace to show up to each morning. We’re proud of the impact LaunchHouse and our community has, regardless of whether we can quantify it. In 2018, our team will continue its mission to build a community where businesses and people come to grow. LaunchHouse will be offering more practical programming to continue to support idea-stage entrepreneurs, featuring topics like marketing for small businesses and more. However, in 2018, we will also turn our focus to supporting growing companies with two employees or more, providing them with the resources and space to continue growing. We look forward to witnessing individuals engage with and learn from one another while developing their businesses. Finally, we encourage each of you to stay involved with LaunchHouse in 2018. Attend our programming or join us for a drink with entrepreneurs at Happy Hour. Interested in mentoring an entrepreneur? Are you an expert on a topic that you can present on for a Lunch + Learn? Would you like to sponsor a Happy Hour? Can you give your own advice and feedback to an entrepreneur who’s doing customer development? Contact Jaudia Quinn (jaudia@launchhouse.com) to learn more about these opportunities. We want more people than ever to be engaged in our entrepreneurial community in 2018. At LaunchHouse, we believe in the African proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Go far with us. Thank you for your support, and for being here to celebrate with us tonight. Cheers to a wonderful 2018 and 10 years of Launchhouse!

Who are our entrepreneurs?

aunchHouse has been home to entrepreneurs in Cleveland since 2008. Back then, there were very few resources and organizations that supported idea-stage entrepreneurs. Today, we are thrilled that there are dozens of local organizations eager to mentor, fund, educate and support startups of all stages. If there is one thing we have learned over the past

ten years, it is that it takes a community to help an entrepreneur succeed. Thank you for showing your support for Cleveland’s startup community. We invite you to meet each of our showcase companies this evening. Looking to get more involved with LaunchHouse and our entrepreneurs? Please contact us online to learn more at launchhouse.com.

ike most of the country, my husband and I did not think much about our daily food choices. Processed meats here, GMO tortillas there. We were young and healthy, no real need to be concerned with what we ate. However, all that changed after the Gina Jones birth of our beautiful little girl, Gianna. Four months after her birth, I was diagnosed with several autoimmune diseases. Doctors prescribed a very strict diet. I quickly discovered that nearly everything on the market had additives, chemicals, pesticides, dyes, artificial flavorings and a host of ingredients that I can’t even pronounce. (Butylated hydrozyttoluene, anyone?) These exist mostly for the purpose

of preserving shelf life, but I absolutely cannot consume them with my autoimmunity. After existing primarily on lettuce wraps and organic chicken for months, I began to miss chocolate, cheese, bagels, coffee and especially my morning cereal! Seeing my husband bring home pizzas didn’t help. There had to be a way to enjoy food without compromising your health or spending a fortune. I went back to school to become a Registered Dietitian, to help people improve their eating and ultimately their lives. I created a recipe for a bread alternative, granola for my cereal, even ice cream, waffles, sauce and cookies. My products are all top 8 allergen free and non-GMO. Vegan? Paleo? AIP? You can eat them all! And my husband the pizza lover? He can’t get enough. Welcome to the world of delicious bread and grain alternatives, welcome to my Crunchy Kitchen.

Emanate Wireless

manate Wireless is based in Cleveland and works in close partnership with the Cleveland Clinic, which is its largest customer. Emanate builds solutions that continuously monitor the operation and productivity of key clinical assets at health care facilities. Why does that matter? Hospitals are being asked to do more without increasing spending, which means driving efficiency. How does it work? Emanate attaches intelligent, cloudconnected sensors to critical assets. Analytics software then transforms the raw data from these sensors into contextual information and actionable insights. To highlight key use cases: • Emanate has created a unique solution that monitors both the temperature and AC power draw of refrigerators. Realtime analytics software

processes the sensor data and generates alerts for problems before they cause a temperature excursion, such as a laboring compressor or an AC outage. These early alerts enable corrective action before inventory is lost, which can save hundreds of thousands of dollars or eliminate loss of critical medical samples. • Emanate has also created an innovative sensor that monitors the location and AC power draw of plug-in medical assets such as pumps, monitors and specialty beds. Real-time analytics software processes the AC power data and transforms the data into “usage state” (active vs. idle). This usage state information then feeds data-driven analysis of optimal inventory levels — “How much equipment do we really need, and where?” It can also be used to discover under-utilized assets and for lifecycle decisions: refurbish vs. replace. Why now? A perfect storm of technology — low-cost cloud services, mobile apps, integrated sensors, WiFi and BlueTooth ubiquity, learningbased analytics — combined with the need in health care to do more with less. The business model is based on selling the innovative sensors, along with an annual SaaS subscription fee, which includes analytics, data mining and the easy-touse app.

She was one of the very first sellers on Edibly! Anthony later started Pure Foods in an effort to bring wholesome and healthier foods to market across the country. In November 2017, Red Lotus Foods officially joined the Pure Foods family of brands. Before joining Pure Foods, Jeanne was ready to start other adventures and had lined up a potential buyer for her company. Anthony offered to help make sure she was getting a good deal for the amazing line up of products she had produced. The original buyer, however, was not offering the kind of deal Anthony felt Red Lotus Foods deserved, so he thought it made perfect sense for Red Lotus Foods to join Pure Foods. Anthony and his company, Pure Foods, had only one requirement; Jeanne had to stay involved and share in the successes because she is the

We believe that entrepreneurship education and experience can make subjects such as math and writing more relevant to students. We also believe that the intangibles learned through entrepreneurship — perseverance, hard work, managing adversity, overcoming failure, problem solving — directly mirror characteristics necessary for success in life, regardless of whether one is an entrepreneur. YEI was founded in 2006 by it’s current director, Greg Malkin. YEI has grown to impact thousands of students and educators across our region. heart and soul of the company. Anthony and Jeanne are already taking Red Lotus Foods to new markets and developing the next round of innovative dairy-free food products. Pure Frut, a whole fruit puree-based frozen dessert, was a happy accident! Todd Goldstein, co-founder of LaunchHouse and an investor in Pure Frut, was originally trying to purchase a domain name for another business and had a chance conversation with the owner of the domain. Turns out, he was also the owner of a wildly successful school-based food product that had fallen to the wayside as school nutrition requirements changed under the Obama administration. The former owner asked Todd, Anthony and Eric Hurwitz whether they had any interest in bringing the product back to market and re-energizing the brand. After tasting the product, performing a trial production run, and sampling with schools, hospitals, assisted living and senior facilities, they realized that there was an tremendous opportunity in the market for Pure Frut. The products currently on the market were either juice-based and unhealthy or so expensive that it inhibited their ability to purchase them. Anthony knew that Pure Frut could do it cheaper, faster and better, making it possible to bring healthy, wholesome frozen fruit dessert cups to every organization that wants healthy AND delicious in the same products.

The entire program was fabulous and really got my son engaged in taking his ‘tinkering’ to the next level.” A teacher wrote to tell us, “I cannot express in words how much I appreciate you for what your organization is doing for the kids and for my heart!” At tonight’s Bootstrap Bash, you will have the opportunity to meet some of our young entrepreneurs!

t all started when Victor was 17 and studying abroad in Costa Rica. The school he studied at would often receive way more fruit from local farmers than they knew what to do with, so he decided to let it dry in order to avoid throwing it away.

He began sharing it with classmates and other members of the community, and they would save it for treks up the mountains or hikes through the rainforest. When he came back to the states, he was confused why he couldn’t find anything as remotely good. What you’re eating right now tastes just like the good stuff he’d make back at his second home, and it excites him to be able to share those same unbelievable flavors here at his first home with all of you.
