REMEMBERING THEIR DRIVE AND PASSION FOR THE AUTOMOBILE

BRUCE A. ELDER 1957–2021

In February of this year, the car community lost a dear friend and advocate for our hobby. Bruce Elder became interested in cars at a very early age when, as he often told the tale, his favorite teacher was whisked away from school one day by a gentleman in an E-Type Jaguar, never to return. By the age of 15, Bruce started pursuing his business formally, establishing his antique car company in New Hampshire, which subsequently brought him in contact with car enthusiasts worldwide. In 1989, Bruce and his family moved to Staunton, VA, and opened Bruce A. Elder Antique and Classic Vehicles. In addition to his vast knowledge of cars, Bruce was always interested in the stories behind the vehicle. Bruce was a great storyteller and always enjoyed sharing these stories with many car enthusiasts. It is this love that we are honoring by creating The Bruce Elder Trophy to be given to the car with the best story. In 2014, Bruce was diagnosed with cancer and spent seven years as a patient with the UVA Cancer Center. This relationship with the Center and extensive knowledge of cars led Bruce to be a speaker at both the 2018 and 2019 VFOTW events. The VFOTW’s stated purpose of raising money for the UVA Cancer Center Patient Care Fund, which assists cancer patients with their bills, was a personal cause for Bruce.

Weldon was the proprietor of G&W Motorwerkes, Ltd and built a successful business from humble beginnings in 1969. He was a Northeast Division SCCA champion race driver and noted worldwide expert in the Porsche brand, winning the Porsche Club of America’s top award for Concours restoration unprecedentedly four times. Weldon served as an honored judge of the Amelia Island and Pebble Beach Concours. He never met a stranger, and his favorite pastime was buying lunch for an unsuspecting patron at one of his favorite lunch spots. Known for his unique hats and easy smiles, Weldon was a friend to many in the area. He truly cared about other people and took time out of his day to help others, even in the last days of his life. He believed you could accomplish anything you set your mind to if you had enough self-discipline and respect for yourself and others. While serving in the US Army Corps of Engineers in Germany in the late 1950s, Weldon saw his first Porsche and asked someone nearby, “What kind of car is that?” They responded “a Porsche,” and he knew he would own one someday. This chance meeting of the little-known German sports car would shape the rest of his life. He bought, restored, and sold countless Porsche cars, specializing for many years in the Porsche Speedster.
