A Message from the Director Dear Weinberg Families and Residents, Welcome to the Summer edition of our newsletter! Hopefully, we will have some sun in the next couple of days! As always, we have been busy in our community hosting some wonderful events! To name a few: Our first annual Dog Show was a huge success! Over 30 dogs participated in an array of categories and we gave away many prizes to the dogs and owners!

Thanks to those families who helped support this event. Most importantly, thanks to our resident judges who did a great job!

Our July 3rd BBQ was another fun event. The kids enjoyed our face painting and balloon artists while residents and their families enjoyed a beautiful day together. July 12th is our annual volunteer luncheon. I want to personally thank all of those volunteers who dedicate so much of their free time to our residents and staff at both Gidwitz and the Friend Center. Volunteers help in a wide variety of programs, make one-to-one visits with the residents and at times even put on performances for our residents. Our community would not be the same without all of those special individuals and groups that help out. Thank you on behalf of our Weinberg family.

If you know of anyone in the community who would benefit from our day program, please contact Emily Mysel at 847.236.7863. We have a beautifully renovated space and have plenty of space for new clients to participate in various life enriching programs daily in a safe and secure environment.

As a reminder, we have our resident referral program. If any resident or family member refers a resident to either Gidwitz or Friend Center and the person signs a 1 year lease, you will receive a check for $750.00. Our best referrals come from you, so please think of us!

REMINDERS A few reminders: Please sign in at the front desk, and sign out when leaving—-we need to insist on this for the safety of our residents and staff.

Please obtain a form at the front desk when going out of town, and indicate an emergency contact for when you are away. You can alternately call front desk to give the above information, and it will be sent to pertinent staff.

If you have a private caregiver working for you, please make sure we are aware of this.

If your family member is in the hospital and will be going to a rehab facility, please advise us, to guarantee continuity of care.

If you bring your pet to our building, please make sure that he/she is on a leash at all times.

DEPARTMENT UPDATE As a reminder– If we do not have your current email address, please leave at the front desk with the receptionist or email Tawanna.Shack@cje.net so that we can keep current information on file.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU Monroe Glazer Monroe became a strong presence on the Gidwitz scene in the short time he has been with us. His white shock of hair and mustache, sparkling sense of humor and his singing greeting energizes us all. Here’s the scoop on how he became Monroe: Several boys in his family were named Alvin and Melvin, including him. This was too confusing, so he had his name legally changed to Monroe.

Monroe was born in Chicago’s Kelvyn Park, the youngest of 3 boys. At age 21 he enlisted in the Navy during WWII, just months after Pearl Harbor. As a member of the new recruits called “Ninety Day Wonders”, off he went to active duty for the next four years. Monroe returned and attended Wright Junior College and Northwestern University, and then began his career in advertising and marketing.

Monroemarried Maryanne, who sadly died at age 43, leaving Monroe as the sole parent of three children, the youngest only 9 years of age. He later married Shirley, and his family added her 2 sons and the daughter they had together.

He is active with Jewish War Veterans, Temple Solel in Highland Park and Northbrook Community Synagogue, which he attends on Saturdays. He enjoys painting very much, and has taken art lessons, and even has an easel in his apartment. A most welcome tablemate and conversationalist, we are fortunate to have Monroe as a member of Weinberg Community.

“The War Years” as told by Zelda Bachrach In honor of all the veterans who have served this country Zelda Bachrach has kindly shared her own experience during “The War Years” Zelda was born and raised in the city of Chicago by her parents Dora and Herman. She had one “brilliant” brother named Bernard. During the war, Bernard was recruited to Camp Grant, IL to be inducted into the army.

Zelda shared the story of watching her brother getting ready to be inducted, when all of a sudden the FBI came and grabbed him and took him away. Her family did not know where he went. However, they found out years later he was taken to work on the A- bomb.

When Zelda was 14 years old, she started to work at Goldblatt Brothers on State and Van Buren. She mentioned that this was one of the only places that was hiring Jewish people. During the war time, she was very active. She would go to the Veterans hospital and visit the soldiers. Additionally, her friends at Goldblatts started what they called the “Fratoraty”. When the boys that belonged to this club got sent to the service the ladies would write them letters on toilet paper.

Employee Spotlight Tawanna Shack Tawanna has been an indispensable member of the Weinberg Community team since 1998, working as an Administrative Assistant, specifically to the Leasing Office. However, in reality, she assists many of the management team, especially with technology. Never does she refuse a request, whether from staff, residents or families. She exhibits understanding, patience and compassion to all of our residents. Recently Tawanna has been promoted to Business Office Liaison and continues to function with efficiency, compassion and generosity.

Tawanna resides in Calumet City with her son Kalen (who recently bestowed the title of Grandma on his mother with the birth of his son Kendal). She also has a daughter Keianna, who just completed two years at Le Cordon Bleu in Atlanta and will go on to obtain a Business Degree here in Chicago.

Traveling three hours each way to work, five days a week (taking two trains and three buses) ”because I love the environment at Weinberg”, Tawanna used the time to do her homework required for her coursework toward her Associate Degree from The University of Phoenix, and will continue on toward earning her Bachelor’s Degree. We cannot imagine our workplace without Tawanna—-she is a gem.
