Dear Weinberg Families and Residents, Welcome to our Spring Edition! Hope everyone is starting to enjoy our nicer weather!

We have had many wonderful events over the last few months., and here are a few: Our Gidwitz Songsters recently performed for our entire community and it was fun to see them “on stage” after the hours and hours that went into practicing for this fun event! We also recently had an amazing art show entitled “The Story of My Life” which was comprised of pieces of artwork created by Friend Center and Adult Day Care clients. A special thanks to our Life Enrichment Team for their efforts with this show. If you have not seen this yet, please visit our art gallery! Believe it or not, Passover is over and we are thrilled that we were able to celebrate with so many of our family members who joined us for either one or two nights of the holiday. Thank you to all those who thought of us for catering and ordered some of our Passover specialties for your own seders!

I want to welcome Elyse Schott, who is our new certified personal trainer, replacing Dontrel.

She comes with lots of experience with personal training at her neighborhood gym. She has also worked at a chiropractor’s office in the past. Please welcome her as she transitions to her new role.

Keep your eyes out for our resident/family satisfaction surveys which will be coming out over the next several weeks. I encourage all of you to fill them out and give us your honest feedback. We hope you enjoy all of our programs and services, but are always looking to improve in the areas we need to!

As a reminder, we have our resident referral program. If any resident or family member refers a resident to Gidwitz or Friend Center and the person signs a one-year lease, you will receive a check for $750.00. Our best referrals come from you, so please think of us!

A few reminders: Please sign in at the front desk, and sign out when leaving—-we need to insist on this for the safety of our residents and staff.

Please obtain a form at the front desk when going out of town, and indicate an emergency contact for when you are away. You can alternately call front desk to give the above information, and it will be sent to pertinent staff.

If you have a private caregiver working for you, please make sure we are aware of this.

If your family member is in the hospital and will be going to a rehab facility, please advise us, to guarantee continuity of care.

If you bring your pet to our building, please make sure that he/she is on a leash at all times.

Please help us in congratulating Tawanna Shack who will now be in the position of Business Office Liaison. In her new role, she will be helping the residents and families with any and all of their billing needs. She is transitioning and continuing to learn a lot about our billing process but we are thrilled to have her advance within our community and help to better meet our customers needs!

Cera Gordon Cera was born on April 17th 1915 in Williston, North Dakota in a mud hut. She was the oldest of six children. At the age of 18 she and her brother left Williston to venture out into the world. She ended up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and trained to be a stenographer.

In 1937, Cera opened up the very first social security office in Lafayette, Indiana, serving as its manager. She met her husband Morris Friedman, the owner of the local grocery store. Cera and Morris had four children, all of whom live throughout the United States. She is now a grandmother of seven and a great grandmother of seven. After Morris passed away, Cera got back together with her high school sweetheart, Leonard Gordon, who had asked for her hand in marriage 50 years earlier. They moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. Cera lived there for over 20 years where she remained extremely active in the Jewish community and in aerobics and dance classes.

Cera’s ability to remain happy, healthy, and positive throughout her life can be attributed to her three favorite sayings: 1. Let it go; 2. This too shall pass; and 3. It is what it is. Happy 100th birthday Cera you are an inspiration to us all.

Anita Coleman

Anita moved to the Gidwitz community in August 2014, with her husband Phillip. Phillip has sadly passed away. He’s been described as a gentleman with a good sense of humor. He was very instrumental in developing the community of St Charles, Illinois.

Anita had nine children—with a 19 year age span between the youngest, 39-year-old Lisa, and the oldest, 59-year-old Linda. Lisa resides in Israel, and Linda lives in Northbrook. Anita has 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild—so far! While the children were young, the Coleman home was the gathering place for all of their friends—with swimming, good food and always a warm welcome. And Anita, who a kept a kosher home, did everything with no nanny, no housekeeping help. Shabbat dinners, often with 24 at the table, featured homemade chicken soup, challah and chocolate chip cookies. Quite a lady!

Anita grew up in East Rogers Park, and graduated from Sullivan High School.

She was the middle of a sib ship of three. Anita still has her house in Northbrook, where the out-of-town kids often stay. She continues to drive and sees her family often. Anita has a nurturing personality, and always offers a helping hand. She participates in many activities including art classes, religious services and exercise classes. You’ll also find her in the weekly Women’s Group— just listen for the heartiest laugh! Anita cherishes the many friendships that she has made, and we consider ourselves very fortunate to have Anita as a member of Weinberg Community.

Nina Afremow Nina has been a Social Worker at Gidwitz Place for 16 years and counting and continues to derive great pleasure from relationships with residents, families and co-workers. This is her second career—she was a Special Education teacher in the Chicago Schools, teaching hearing-impaired students. In her early 40’s she attended Jane Addams School of Social Work at UIC, receiving her MSW, and then her LCSW two years later.

Nina has had a variety of social work experiences. Her first position was at a for-profit psychiatric hospital in the Uptown area, working with a diverse population. After 5 years she became a psychotherapist for Humana HMO, in Evanston and Glenview.

When Humana’s Behavioral Health closed, she was offered the position she now has—a beshert occurrence!

Nina was married at age 20, and she has a daughter Arlyn, who resides in a nearby suburb. An attorney by education, Arlyn has been a poetry teacher at various schools, including Solomon Schecter. She is a published poet. Her son in law Mark works as an attorney, and both he and Arlyn are dedicated parents to three children: Madelyn, a Junior at NYU; Susannah, graduating from New Trier this June; and son Jackson, who will enter New Trier in September.

Nina cherishes any opportunity to spend time in Union Pier, MI, and her many travel destinations include London, Paris, Vienna, and Budapest. Sheldon, her partner of 30 years, completes her life. Both are devoted fans of the Bulls— Bears not too much—and Masterpiece Mysteries, Nina hopes to continue at the Weinberg Community for years to come—working here brings her great joy.
