Dear Families and Residents, We have had a fun filled and action packed fall season! From high holidays, to the world series, and to the heated election! Our residents had many stimulating conversations and programs.

We want to thank Solomon Schechter Day School for giving us the opportunity to work with their 6th grade students throughout this entire school year in a variety of capacities– please check out the article written from our first program with them entitled Better Together which you can find on our newly created website WeinbergCommunity.net Abbott came and visited Weinberg a few months ago to film a segment called Dancing with Seniors. Our residents and clients enjoyed a dance/movement therapy class led by Jackie Abramson. Residents, clients and Abbot had a fun filled morning. A few reminders: Please sign in at the front desk, and sign out when leaving—-we need to insist on this for the safety of our residents and staff.

Please obtain a form at the front desk when going out of town, and indicate an emergency contact for when you are away. You can alternately call the front desk to give the above information, and it will be sent to pertinent staff.

If you have a private caregiver working for you, please make sure we are aware of this.

If your family member is in the hospital and will be going to a rehab facility, please advise us, to guarantee continuity of care.

We want to make sure everyone is informed that Nina Afremow has resigned/retired. She had been working in our community for the last 19 years and had decided that it was time she spent time with her family and friends. As soon as we have a replacement for her, we will let everyone know. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to see one of our other social workers at any time should you need anything-Marci Balonick is a licensed clinical social worker and can be reached at 847-236-7864 and Emily Mysel is also a licensed clinical social worker and can be reached at 847236-7863.

We want to congratulate Jaclyn Abramson, Our Friend Center Supervisor on becoming Employee of the Year for CJE! Jackie has been an energetic Weinberg employee since September 2014. She began her journey at CJE in 2013 in the Life Enrichment Department and transitioned to ADS Coordinator. Jackie’s zest for life is contagious. There isn’t a day that goes by where she isn’t dancing down the hallway singing show tunes. She’s effervescent, enthusiastic, compassionate and innovative. Jackie is consistently creating and implementing new programs and events that enhance the lives of her clients and their families. She has established meaningful and supportive relationships with her clients' spouses and/or caregivers to help them manage their loved ones journey with dementia. She provides them with a safe space to discuss their feelings, challenges and helps them better prepare for the future. There is no task that Jackie will not participate in and she is always passionate about promoting an environment where residents/clients and their families are provided opportunities. She brings laughter and joy into the lives of her clients, their families and her colleagues.

Frances Karras—Gidwitz Place Fran Moved to Gidwitz Place a year ago, though it seems she has been a member of our community much longer. She made the decision to move to an Assisted Living Facility because of health issues and has made substantial progress within this year.

Fran graduated from Hyde Park High School, attended the University of Illinois at Navy Pier for 1 ½ years, then to Urbana for one year, graduating from Roosevelt University with a major in History and minor in Education. Her 1st job was as a cashier at the Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park. She later worked as an Administrator at Temple Beth Israel, followed by doing administrative work for the Rabbi and Cantor at Anshe Emet.

Fran was married for 43 years to her husband Ronald, who died in 2000 at age 68. She then moved to condo at Barcelona in Skokie, and was a substitute teacher in that suburb. Her son Alan has a PhD in International Studies, and is currently Dean of that department at Berkley. Her younger son Daniel resides in Western Wisconsin.

Here at Gidwitz, Fran found a productive lifestyle. Along with another resident she organized our Library, which is no small feat. She eats her meals with 3 women who have become confidants and good friends. She enjoys sittersize, Shabbat Services, musical programs, and Women’s Group. Fran’s move to Gidwitz Place is a “win-win”—for her as well as for our community. So glad to have her as part of our Weinberg family.

Charles Coren—Friend Center Chuck was born in Chicago, IL and graduated from Sullivan High School. He studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois in URBANACHAMPAIGN not Champagne. Chuck was married to Arlene for over 50 years and even named his company after her: Arcor Company (Arlene Coren combined) because he loved her so much. Arcor was a wire and cable company. Arlene and Chuck have three children: Jamie, Steve and Jill and10 grandchildren. His daughter, Jamie shared that he used to take them to the hardware store every Saturday. Chuck and Arlene retired in Florida. Chuck’s favorite thing about Florida is that the “sun was always out.” He and his wife traveled regularly and took many cruises to places like the Mediterranean and the Caribbean Islands. Chuck loves to play golf and tennis, take naps, eat Chinese food and drink a scotch during Happy Hour.

Marvin Koffman – Adult Day Service Marvin was born in Chicago, IL. He attended Bryant Elementary and graduated from Marshall High School. He studied at Herschel University in Chicago for 2 years before joining the Army. He served 3 years and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan. After the Army, he graduated from Loyola University with a packaging degree. During his single days, he used to work for Elvis Presley. He was responsible for booking the hotel rooms and selling merchandise. He met his wife, Fran at Farwell Beach when she was 21 years old.

Fran was looking for a swimming cap when Marvin, who was sitting with a bunch of women asked Fran to go swimming. They got married 6 months later at the Blackstone Grand Ballroom. They spent their honeymoon in Acapulco, where they continue to vacation every winter. They have 3 children: twin boys, Mike and Jeff and a daughter, Marcy. They were blessed with 3 grandchildren. Marvin’s favorite restaurant is Ricardo’s. Ricardo’s is where he took his wife on their first date. Marvin enjoys coming to the Adult Day Service program because, “he likes to communicate with other people.”

James Skoufes Weinberg Community is running smoothly, thanks in large part to Jim, who is Director of Facility Management, which is inclusive of engineering maintenance, environmental services, and safety. Seems like Jim has been here forever, though it’s only 1 ½ years. From day one Jim became integrated into the Weinberg Team, always quickly responsive and having as his goal resident satisfaction and safety.

Jim lives locally in Elkgrove Village with his wife Anne who is a Registered Nurse and his dog Jingles. They have 5 grown children-Joe, Steve, Nick, Steven, and Katie. Jim has 3 grandchildren and enjoys time with all of them!

Jim holds numerous professional certifications, among them the following: Certificate of Healthcare Safety, Professional Certified Crisis Intervention Instructor, Certified Member of Community Response Team, and has a Stationary Engineer License. He has been the facility manager at other senior communities for the last 22+ years. His staff echoes their boss’s work ethic. We are in good hands with Jim Skoufes.

GEM Awards The GEM Award is presented to an employee for going the extra mile and embracing Customer Service standards such as Acknowledgement, Communication, Professionalism, and Personal Responsibility. In the front lobby of Gidwitz and Friend Center there is a description of the GEM Award and a nomination form for any employee that you feel is deserving of recognition.
