Message from Our Board Chair

Dear Friends,

Over the past year, I have seen our community come together and show resilience, determination and a shared sense of purpose, working effectively to make sure older adults can age with dignity and respect. While the external environment for nonprofit organizations remains very challenging, your devotion to CJE has helped us serve over 20,000 older adults and their family members. I am honored to be among all of you here tonight who are committed to helping CJE provide programming that can enhance the quality of their lives. I am also delighted to introduce Dan Fagin, CJE’s President and CEO, who will be leading the charge to advance our enduring mission.

Because of your generosity, nearly 1400 seniors had a safe place to call home; 1000 clients received mental and emotional support through counseling; and over 75,000 home-delivered meals were provided to those who otherwise would go hungry… and so much more. I offer tremendous kudos to our staff who work tirelessly— in our buildings, in our neighborhoods, and behind the scenes—to respond to the voices of seniors in the Jewish and larger community.

I hope that by attending Celebrate CJE, you gain an even deeper understanding of our comprehensive continuum of care and how we are preparing to help meet the evolving needs of our aging population. It is our responsibility, as an organization founded on Jewish principles and values, to ensure that CJE have the resources to address the financial, emotional, physical and spiritual requirements of future generations.

I thank our Celebrate CJE’s Co-Chairs Terri Freeman and Vicki Pines, the entire Event Committee, our Board of Directors, Sponsors, Ad Book contributors and all our guests for your special contributions to making this evening a huge success. As we move toward 2019, I am not only proud of what CJE has accomplished, but excited about the future.

Message from Our President & CEO

Dear Friends,

Though I have only been at CJE since mid-August, I have already witnessed—and have heard many personal stories— how our community benefits from CJE’s incredible continuum of care. I am truly honored to lead this special organization which has an enduring mission to enhance the lives of older adults and their families.

Over the years, CJE has made substantial organizational, operational and strategic progress in spite of a healthcare climate that is undergoing tremendous change. But there is more work to do to ensure that CJE has the resources to provide the highest level of care to all who come through our doors. My goal, over the next few months, is to learn and listen to you, our staff, lay leaders, clients, and residents—in fact, all our stakeholders—in order to chart a path that builds on our past successes and prepares us for future challenges.

I am thankful to be surrounded by a dedicated Board of Directors and an outstanding staff who are united by a deep sense of commitment to envision a CJE that is prepared to meet the evolving needs of seniors—from Boomers to Holocaust survivors—as well as their adult children. I am especially grateful for the Jewish United Fund and all our donors who believe in our work and say “yes” when we request support for programs that have a positive impact on our Jewish and larger community.

It may take some time, but I hope to personally meet with many of you in the coming months. My door is always open and I look forward to developing a lasting relationship with this gracious and welcoming community.

About CJE SeniorLife …helping older adults pursue lives of meaning, independence and good health through Life Enrichment, Supportive Resources, Healthcare, Research and Education.

Life Enrichment

CJE’s programs and services in our residences and the community provide an enriched mind, body, spirit and cultural experience for older adults. Our philosophy: staying active and “engaged with life” is an important component of healthy aging.

CENTER FOR HEALTHY LIVING (CHL)

CHL helps older adults link to community resources, make informed choices about aging issues and maintain their physical, mental and social well-being. Lifelong learning, health screenings and cultural/social events help them lead healthy, independent lives.

RELIGIOUS LIFE SERVICES

Recognizing that a healthy spiritual life is the foundation for the health and wellness of older adults, CJE SeniorLife offers a wide range of spiritual, religious and cultural programs in our residential settings. Pastoral Care is provided by our full-time certified chaplain. Shabbat and holiday services are conducted at a number of CJE locations. CJE works closely with many community clergy and places of worship to reach out to their congregants in need of eldercare services. We also partner in NorthShore University HealthSystem’s Jewish Hospice Program.

VOLUNTEERING

More than 2,000 volunteers provide vital services to clients including participating in activities, delivering meals and visiting at-risk seniors.

Supportive Resources

A wide range of programming and services provides support and direct services to family members, caregivers and older adults to promote aging in place at home and in the community.

ADULT DAY SERVICES (ADS)

ADS offers supervised, structured programs for people with Alzheimer’s or related disorders, as well as those who are frail or socially isolated. A group setting maximizes each participant’s potential by promoting autonomy, creativity and self-esteem.

CJE’s ADS programs are offered in downtown Chicago, Evanston and Deerfield.

WEINBERG COMMUNITY FOR SENIOR LIVING

A state-licensed campus in Deerfield that offers several levels of care while embracing Jewish culture.

Assisted Living

Gidwitz Place features one- and two-bedroom apartments for older adults who require a supportive environment yet still wish to live as independently as possible. Amenities include personal care services, housekeeping, kosher restaurant-style dining, a full schedule of activities, respite care and registered nurse on site 24/7.

Memory Care

The Friend Center for Memory Care is a home-like residence for people with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders.

Residents enjoy spacious private rooms, assistance with bathing and grooming, stimulating activities and kosher meals. The Bernard Heerey Annex has five elegant suites and an expanded area for Adult Day Services programming.

Respite care is also available.

CJE CARE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

A program that coordinates and links care across communitybased health and social services organizations and provides advocacy and support. The goal of the Care Management program is to promote the safety and well-being of older adults in the community so that they can remain independent for as long as possible. Participants need to meet certain age, income and geographic location for eligibility.

CONSUMER ASSISTANCE (CA)

CA staff in Chicago and the northwest suburbs provide free information, resources and advocacy on issues that impact older adults, including consumer benefits, community services, public assistance, Medicare, Social Security, housing referrals, and transportation. Russian-speaking staff available.

FOOD SERVICES

Food Services delivers kosher meals through Home-Delivered Meals to older adults. CJE also offers weekly delivery of freshfrozen meals via our Kosher to Go® program, as well as kosher catering. All is cRc approved, except catering from Weinberg Community, which is rabbinically-supervised kosher.

HOLOCAUST COMMUNITY SERVICES (HCS)

HCS provides support and services to Holocaust survivors and their family members.

INDEPENDENT LIVING

CJE SeniorLife owns and operates subsidized and affordable apartment buildings for older adults who qualify for government-subsidized housing. Robineau Residence is a groupliving residence for 24 older adults, with supportive services available as needed.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation on a CJE Shalom Bus offers limited service based on availability.

YOUR ELDERCARE CONSULTANTS (YEC)

YEC is a team of geriatric care management professionals who assess and consult with older adults and their families as they experience the transitions of aging. Acting as liaisons to family caregivers, Your Eldercare Consultants coordinate service delivery, guide decision-making and monitor care. Household Clutter & Downsizing Service and Bill Paying Services available.

Healthcare

CJE provides programming and facility settings that address both post-acute and chronic medical and psycho-social needs in coordination with the larger healthcare system.

CJE COUNSELING SERVICES

Counseling from CJE’s licensed clinical social workers is available to older adults and their families, along with a variety of support groups. The Linkages Program assists seniors who are primary caregivers of adult children with disabilities.

LIEBERMAN CENTER FOR HEALTH AND REHABILITATION

Conveniently located near Old Orchard in Skokie with 240 private rooms, Lieberman provides residential long-term care, short-term rehabilitation and a dementia special care unit. Hospice and respite care are also available. Services available to all residents include peritoneal dialysis, infusion, pain management and wound care, as well as creative arts, therapeutic, recreational and spiritual programs. Kosher dining is approved by the Chicago Rabbinical Council (cRc).

Short-Term Rehabilitation

An in-patient unit that serves patients after hospitalization, providing physical, occupational and speech therapy primarily to Medicare-certified patients. A newly-renovated Rehab & Fitness Center offers the latest in equipment. Special programs include: Orthopedic Recovery, Stroke Recovery, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Hematology and Oncology, Medically and Surgically Complex Care. Free Lieberman +30 program helps to ease transition back home. Hemodialysis is available.

Long-Term Skilled Nursing

We provide a high level of medical care over the long term for patients who need frequent care for chronic conditions.

Our long term care features specialty care for Parkinson’s and Dementia care. Palliative and Hospice care are also available.

Research and Education

CJE enables the study and assessment of new methods and models of care and the training of professionals to advance the delivery of high quality services and programming.

APPLIED RESEARCH

The Leonard Schanfield Research Institute (LSRI) conducts social and applied research in the field of aging that provides the catalyst for new and innovative program development.
