Dear Bro. Lamb, I juet wanted to tell you a few of my feelings about Chaminade now that Irve graduated and spent a year at college. The comments I at Chaminade cannot that year cannot be it may have made in

make now concerning my 1969-70 school year be complete at this pOint. The impact of judged honestly at any point but changes my life can at least be guessed at.

First, I feel the freedom I had during my senior year at Chaminade left me in some ways unprepared for college. Most of this was my own fault for not taking advantage of my opportunities. The biggest change was ba~k to a system lined with structure grade. and pressures. Although there is a greater ~reedom in course selections and scheduling free time, the ~act is that a certain amount of work must be done ~d tests must be passed. MY adjustment did not hurt me that badly but I continually ~elt eramped by the regimentation. You might say I was spoiled by my freedom at Chaminade. !ho~h there were problems I also feel that possibly my senior year served to interest me in learning. I have become .nch more interested in reading in a wide variety of areas. This of course may be a result of my first year at college or a combination of the last two years.

BY senior year at Chaminade was a positive experience. Whether the school system as it was had that much an effect cannot be told. But I would have to say that it served as some sort o~ turning point for me. My confidence, interest and all around attitude Yere changed in that year so I naturally feel strongly about it. Colleges must change for the Chaminade system to be revolutionary. But I feel that the one year I had 1ms important and could be for anyone. Thanks,

Dear Bro. Jerry, I thought I'd I've been thinking University. I feel was the background

write a short note and comment on some things about during my first year at Creighton that I did fairly well and the biggest reason I received at Chaminade.

The first year that I attended Chaminade I was frightened because of the tradition of sports-coattie- wearing-iron-handeducation you received. It was a good system but I didn't stick with it very long because the system started to change. As the sports coats started to come off, the desire to learn started to increase. Maybe it wasn't the sports coats at all, maybe it was just the people. The grades, the discipline, the attendance, all seemed not to be placed above what you learned. This system became more radical as time progressed, until my senior year. My senior year the system changed very rapidly. I feel that the responsibility that was given to me during this time has been the greatest single factor to help me in college. At school there is no one there to tell me to study, read my notes or get up for my eight o'clock class . The fact that Chaminade taught me how to study and learn, and how to deal with people was really great. However, I do feel that cOming out of my eighth grade year the only thing that saved me was the sports- coattie-wearing-iron-hand-education I received . Hope you had as good a yea r as I had. A. The Triangle, the combined newspaper of Chaminade, Julienne, and St. Joe's, ceased publishing with its second issue . What actually happened was that the Triangle spent 86% of its budget from Student Council on the first and second issues . So, Student Council gave them an ultimatum: find a cheaper printer or el se no more money . A cheaper printer was not found, and the editors were out of a job. Q. Is it true that Wayne Klenotic, former Chaminade Executive Director, is working for a trucking firm?-J.F., Belmont

A. Yes, but it is only temporary. Mr. Klenotic, after leaving the Society of Mary, has taken up a job as a biller with Commercial Trucking Lines .

A. Although Irish to the core, Bro. Bob has been known to frequent every pizza house in the area. He says, "Make mine wi th sausage ."

Q. Was the phantom fire bell ringer ever caught?-E.R. , Wayne Township

A. No. But the frequent fire drills which occurred during mid-year were put to a stop by Mr. George Early, with the help of the Dayton Fire Department. According to Mr. Early, the firemen went around to the fire bel ls and pa in ted the poles with a substance that would stain the hands of the "phantom" for several days. After this was known, for some strange reason , the bells quit tolling.

Q. I understand that there was a group of parents who wanted to close down Chaminade. Is there any truth in this?-E.L., Dayton View

A. Somewhat. A group of parents, largely from Our Lady of Mercy Parish, organized with the purpose of examining Chaminade's innovations in education. They were dissatisfied with the changes at Chaminade. We can say with more certitude that the group was eager to encourage a more conservative ph i I osopy at the schoo l . Like any pressure group, this loosely knit organization had a point of view and voiced it vociferously. The result: the tempo of change at CHS slowed down a bit and "parents" became a concern for any future change at Chaminade.

Yet you sti ll keep attacking that work, which has lost all its original intent. You keep fighting it because it has become a part of you, and you must complete it for yourse lf, not for the satisfaction of others, but for youtself.

You can create; seeing your vISions or dream form in front of your eyes . And when it is complete you can just sit back and smile.

You can participate in those day to day things, eating your brown bag lunch, looking at beautiful chicks, or cat<!hing up on some needed sleep.

And finally you can get down, because at times Chaminade can be the most depressing place in the world. When such times arise you look for an isolated spot and attempt to regain your sanity amidst all the confusion.

Schools have a very particular problem, and, in this respect, Chaminade is no exception . Educational institutions tend to be pictures of society in mini ature. Many of the attitudes, feelings, and prejudices, which are present in our nation at this time can also be found in our educational environment. In particular, racism is rampant.

The most disturbing fact about the whole situation is that schools have also been charged with the task of eliminating this problem through education. The structure and means are definitely present, but the problem is that too few of the students have really taken the time to utilize it. The structure allows students to work in the area of race relations for academic credit and has brought in speakers for the benefit of both students and facu Ity .

Alas, it still appears to have very little affect. People still refer to each other by race in derogatory terms and the restroom walls are still full of racial slurs . The patience exhibited by the two races for each other appears to be less and less as the blacks become more proud of their blackness and the whites more â&#x20AC;˘ afraid .

The picture is not hopeless, though, because as long as a structure .t o change ideas is still present, some students will work to take advantage of the opportunity . These students are the ones who will work to make Chaminade a picture of what society should be, ra1her than is. The responsibility now lies upon the shoulders of the student and faculty member to make best use of this opportunity to fulfill that goal.

Democracy. Before we say we have it, we should examine ourselves and our country. The key to democracy is understanding: understanding of the black man's fight in America, understanding of what we are doing and will be responsible for in Vietnam, understanding of the despair and hopelessness of millions of Americans today. Through our understanding of our problems, we will finally be able to live up to the responsibilities which our democratic system puts upon us: the responsibility of knowing what's going on and doing something about it. This is the only way our system will succeed. Every American must make a personal commitment to bec o me aware. This awareness starts through kn owledge, which extends fa r bey o nd a ny formal education we will ever get. If we really love America, if we are r eally p atrio t ic, this is the course we m u s t f o ll ow.
