For years the hope of a new Chaminade spurred on the faculty, students, and friends to wipe out the debt on the school, so that a new addition could be started. Finally, under the guidance of Bro. Matthew, work was at last begun.

That sun ny day in October will long re m ind us of the courageous step the school took when Bro. Ma tthew removed the first spad eful.
As the annual goes to press, fou n dations have been completed, muct first floor work is already finished, and the auditorium and gymnasium are beginning to take shape. The cafeteria should be ready in Se ptember. By January most of the building will be ready for use. A dream come true!

The building of a new Chaminade is a labor of love, a top priority for all of the faculty, students, parents, alumni and friends who make up the Chaminade family . In the pages of the 1951 EAGLE we hope to capture some of the phases of this building project and to pay tribute to all those who are combining their efforts, generosity and enthusiasm to bring the new building to completion.

Build New Chaminade THE MOTHERS' CLUB: A MOTHER'S GUIDANCE ... A STUDENT'S CO-OPERATION Four personable, yet persistent mothers sparked the Mothers' Club during their annual activities, highlighted by the yearly pillow case bingo with proceeds going to our building and the spiritual retreat at Friarhurst in late May. President was Mrs. Freda Meyring, vice-president was Mrs. Paul Thesing, secretary was Mrs. Edwin Doerfler, and treasurer was Mrs. Hugh Fitzpatrick.
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Thomas McLaughlin, '33, served as president of the Alumni during the past year, assisted by Bob Butler, '38, Dick Bucher, '34, and Don Wehner. The grads sponsored the building fund, held the annual Homecoming and Spring Stag celebrations, and provided scholarships for worthy students. Bro. Sheehy acted as moderator.
Band Club Officers THE FATHERS' CLUB: A FATHER'S JOB ... THE STUDENT'S SUCCESS Under President Joe Eilerman 's capable leadersh ip, the Fathers' Club organized two piscatorial picnics (fish frys) to better social relations among the fathers and also to sink some sizeable coinage into the building fund. The Club hit the bull's eye by organizing 98% of eligible fathers into the club . Mr. John Russell was the vice-president, Mr. Elmer Horwath was the secretary, and Mr. Adam Walker was the treasurer.
BAND CLUB One of the powers behind our great band was the Band Club, under the direction of Mr. Carl Heck as President. Assisting officers. were Mrs. Joseph Hollan, Vice-President; Mrs. Lauretta Lynch, Secretary; and Mrs. Kurt Butz, Treasurer. Composed of the parents of the band members, the club stimulated interest in the band by encouraging their sons in their musical pursuits, strove for mutual understanding of the problems of the band, and assisted in a financial way by sponsoring the huge band raffle during spring . Their work was invaluable.

We are building on the old . As we pay tribute to the builders, we cannot forget that there will be persons, activities, and a spirit at Cham inade which will always be the marks of d istinction which make Cham inade what it is. The pages of this yearboo k which follow will bring out these un changing elements which serve a s a firm foundation for the new edifice we are building. 13

Experience in school life activities is a must for Chaminade. These activities will always be there, providing opportunities without number for the EAGLES to round out and complete their education at Chaminade .
Champion sportsmen are characteristic of Chaminade. That characteristic will remain as a firm foundation for the edifice we are building just as long as there are EAGLES to don the green and white and represent Chaminade in all fields of athletic endeavor.

united with your parents, with the friends of the school, with your fellow students in helping to build this monument to God and Our Blessed Bother.
This effort on your part carries a profound significance.
Men and nations made their impress on world history, not by war and conquest, but by their contribution to civilization.
Foremost among
these contributions were those structures of ancient, medieval, and modern times.
From the pyramids and obelisks of the Egyptians, to
Solomon's Temple, to the Age of Pericles and the Rome of Caesar Augustus down through the centuries to the classical courts and towers of the feudal period, the castles and impressive cathedrals of the Middle Ages to our modern skyscrapers, we have the evolution of civilization. And the inspiration for the createst and noblest achievements was a spiritual one, an attempt on the part of humanity to honor and worship the Divinity. There is a parallel in your own spiritual life.

Religious Activities ANNUAL RETREAT There comes a time in every man 's life . .. and e very student's, when he abandons the familiar daily schedule of study . . . work, and play to assume a serious tone of amendment as he objectively "takes stock" of his past and present . .. and more important, of his future . A carefully planned program of Mass, Benediction, conferences, meditation, religious reading, state-of-life sessions . . . all climaxed by Confession and spiritual nourishment in Holy Communion. The seniors have the tradition of conducting their retreat separate from the rest of the school, due to their position in deciding the future . In 1951 we had the privilege of absorbing the substantial philosophy of Father Ferree, S.M., retreat master.

" Here, within the walls of a thoroughly Catholic institution of learning, every effort undertaken by faculty and students alike is intoned with the word of God as a guide for success. A beckoning red light in the chapel . .. a holy water font ... the C.S.M.C. efforts to revitalize paris h activity .. . plus the example of the S.M ... . varied and many are the opportunities offered to mature with our faith . .. as we mature in our education. THE BISHOP THILL CONFERENCE OF THE C.S.M.C. The three Dayton high schools and seven regional Catholic high schools in the Miami Valley area unite their mission aims in a more extensive manner, with the famed Bishop Thill as their patron. Climaxed by the awe-inspiring May Rally at the U.D. fieldhouse on May 20, 1951 ... sectional meetings were held periodically ' in this area at the d ifferent member schools-Hamilton, Notre Dame Academy at Hamilton , Piqua Catholic, Minster Public, Holy Angels at Sidney, St. Mary's at Urbana, and St. Brigid at Xenia . Rev. James M. Darby, our chaplain, was an officer in the religious sector of the organization, while William Doerfler ('51) was corresponding secretary, William Sommer of Piqua recording secretary, Ronnie Nigh of Urbana treasurer, Margaret Wilkins of Sidney Vice President, and Bernadette Heider, St. Joseph Commercial, President.

CONSECRATION Mary, the Mediatrix of All Graces, has been our model and Queen since we first entered Chaminade, and as an exponent of more advanced state of devotion and Catholic Action, the Marianist Sodality was instituted. Four stages preceding the acceptance of the student as a sodalist are self-explanatory in their meaning: The postulancy, aspirant, probationer, and finally, sodalist. Perhaps the wording of the membership pledge can more adequately convey the high esteem rendered the Sodality by Chaminade studeots. " ... I, servant of God and child of the Catholic, Apostolic Roman Church, give and dedicate myself to the honor of the Immaculate Conception of the most Blessed Virgin Mary . I promise to honor her and, as much as depends upon me, to cause her to be honored by others as the Mother of Youth . . . " One of the greatest thrills and achievements of our high school career was the grand finale consecration ceremony on May 1, 1951 in Emanuel Church .

C.S.M.C.: PARISH ACTION KEYNOTES CHAMINADE GROUPS Because it completely unites the student with the lay apostleship he should actively participate in as a young Crusader ... because he is better acquainted with the people, the problems, and the activities of his home parish . .. because it is considerably easier to work with fellow students you have known for years ... Chaminade's e.S.M.e. has been reorganized and focused upon the parish divisional system, which has proved most successful. On a quantitive point-for-point basis, it not only observes and judges, but it ACTS!! Chapel visits, parish communions, spiritual rallies, daily rosary, confession, regional meetings . .. all are activated with utmost planning and efficiency at Chaminade. The pastorfaculty-student all work for Christ's cause in a smoothly functioning organization.

The end of November saw 14 representatives from our parish CSMC groups attend the first annual Sodality Convention in Pittsburgh. These so phs, juniors, and seniors, under the guidance of Brothers Blank and Ruppel, drew much profit from the meetings, in which the role of the modern sodalists was discussed by representatives from different Marianist schools.

SENIORS of 1951! We ' were portraying this exciting role in the lost act of four years of Catholic education . . . studying, working, playing, praying . . . boys who suddenly found themselves becoming men . . . tho' it was the role that demanded more skill, more courage and strength, we hod to combat any opposition with the good old "Chominade spirit" that makes citizens of the future. But as young Christian men, we possessed a weapon more secure and constant and strong than physical strength-prayer! We hod played to a " full house" in the first, second, and third acts of our high school career. Now the lost oct . . . parties, drives, games, dates, chapel services, tests, diplomas! Memory Span SENIOR DIARY
1947-1948 As eager greenhorns, we tackle one of the major projects of our life . We met new friends and experienced teachers, receive our initiation, witness a City Champ gridiron crown . The Holy Nome parade, the Rosary Night , frosh retreat , oratorical contests, bowling teams, and newspaper staffs . .. ou.t of this unsteady, but growing foundation, we pitched into our higher education with vim and vigor so that the " whole man" might evolve out of this embryo of . .. entrance, excitement, energy!
1948-1949 As voice 路changing sophomores we rotated on a variegated carousel with relentless intensity . . . and shored the making of a dreaml We placed in the semester honor ratings , joined the Chi -Rho Lomba which fostered " Christian recreation ," joined in a first _ .. the annual Bond Concert, and applied elbow grease to any drive that challeng e d our initiative . A fighting football eleven found itself on another summit it hod scaled so perseveringly . .. and we suddenly found ourselves in the process of growing up and noticing the fair beauties of the city! Carefree, fun -loving, yet ambitious and hard-working. We were " in " . . . at lost this wonderful thing called Chaminade took anothe r meaning!
1949-1950 The eyes of Dayton . . . students , busin e ssm e n, parents, facult y . . . all focused on the awe inspir ing de cision w hich thou sands of boys hod a wa ited . . . a new Chaminade! Constru ction dance , variety show, drives, contes ts , and paper collections paved the w ay to the actuality we witness at the ground-breaking ce re mony. The CSMC inaugurates a parish divisional set-up . . . the prom committee staged a glittering " ou revoir "
for the seniors . . . tennis and
ukulele fever were the rages. The w inning building fund slogan wrapped up our goal in one neat package : " A Dream Come True .. . If Everyone Comes Through ."
1950-1951 This is it-the senior year we w ill ne ver e xp e ri e nce again . . . those maturing, proud , happy moments gouged by a crystal boll whi ch, though clouded by global confli cts, dISpla yed a ch a llenge for Mary's men to meet. Let 's appreciate th e n all the values and spiritual ideal s that Chaminade has given us . . . and begin life imbue d with more than diplomas and memories! With Bro. William Schmitt as homeroom teacher, Junior B was a credit to Chaminade. The class officers include AI Barlow, Jim Omlor, Bill Sommers, and Don Well meier. 3B has many boys on the football team, in the Glee Club in the band, and on the honor roll. The stamp drive was a forte for these juniors, who gave the frosh a real battle for first place. Living in the highest place in the school , the chem lab, 3B showed that it deserved this exalted position.

Under the guidance of Bro. Albert Kozar, 3<: has enjoyed a happy year. Larry Spatz led the class as president, ably assisted by Jim Lafferty, Pete O ' Bryan, and Ned Ostendorf. The Booster claime d Peter O ' Bryan and Dick Walker as its president and vice-president. Larry Spatz played football, Fred Stephens used his height in basketball, and Bill Schirack played golf. Working as a team, the closs of Junior D managed to do well in all the various student drives. They showed a burst of speed toward the end of the year in the stomp drive. 3D rates high on the honor roll with Tom Dougherty, Bob Harlett, George Heeter, and Bob Kaiser carrying the torch of scholarship. Bro. George Ruppel, the homeroom teacher, ably harnessed the dynamic energy of these juniors. Not a quiet closs, 3D has always showed lots of pep, enthusiasm, and friendliness.

Bro. John Blank was the homeroom teacher of this class of jovial juniors. A happy-go-lucky group of fellows, 3E voted John Spirk as their president, with Sam Ciani as "Veep," Don Zugelder as secretary and Bob Connell on the student council. Gene Hausfeld and Jim Schubert led the way intellectually, making the honor roll often. Bob Weller and Gene Hausfeld won berths on the varsity eleven. Led by Joe Mazzotta, Gale Fella, Ron Kraus, and Dave Suhr as officers, Soph B had many boys in the C.S.M.C. and on the varsity and reserve football teams. Band members included Jerry Reiger, Don Harris, Joe Bakan, and Phil Doolin. The Booster Club claimed Jim O'Neil while the Glee Club saw the services of Jim Mackey and Don Palmer. Burke, Gibbons, Hunter, and Bakan led the way by placing on the honor roll consistently. Second in the Marianist Drive, this class, under the guidance of Bro. Louis Hettich, is best classified as a "trying" class.

Bro. Joe Jrageser's lads were captained by Jim Smith; who also received the Citizenship award given to the outstanding soph . Tom Coleman, Jock Schmitz, and Don Miller rounded out the panel of officers. Coleman and Drescher mode the honor roll regularl y. Bob Blommel showed off his talents on the gridiron and the hardwood court while Schmitz, Eisele, Steger, and Schubert devoted much time to the fine art of music making in our bond . Bob Ulrich reached the amazing total of $508 for the building fund! Reaching at least 100 % in all school drives, these sophs set a new record in the bond drive with the total of 518 % ! Tom Travis led the smallest class in the school, since 2F had only 22 members. Tom Heider, Don Zimmerman, and John Davis were the capable officers who backed Travis in the leading of this class. Heider regularly made the honor roll. Davis and Kreusch employed their talents in the band . Varsity football players included Travis and Heider, while Bice played for the reserves. Although 2F never won any drives, they did very well in the turkey drive and held their own in the Marianist and stamp drives. These jolly sophs look forward to their remaining years with relish . FRESHMAN A Freshman A admirably displayed their capacity for tackling any job and doing it well. An average of fifty dollars per boy was amassed for the Building Fund. In the turkey drive this class copped a second-place berth . Leading in studies were thirteen honor students: Alquist, Amann , Brenner, Caporal, Elworth , Gall, Helmig, Mehall, Ott, Powers, Schoenberger, Wenni ng, and Wenzel. A quintet of gold eagles showed how to back the new building: Hickey, Roderer, Powers, Pytel, and Wenning. Band members included Roderer, Treon, Wenning , and Hickey. One of the school's most vital organisms for concrete support of all C.H .S. activities, the Booster Club, piloted by Bro. "GLEE CLUB" Under the direction of Bro. Joseph Trageser, our Glee Club made appearances at the State Hospital, the N.C.R. Auditorium, and at Wright Field, where they sang the Midnight Mass at Christmas. The climax of the year was the Spring Concert when, among other numbers, special arrangements of "Stout-hearted Men" and "Chaminade Alma Mater" featured their part of the program.

Every Sunday evening found the kegler kings of Chaminade rolling that ebony ball down the polished lanes to tenpin goals. The annual Fathers' and Sons' Tournament united the fathers and their boys in a game they both loved to play. The Doubles Tournament clima xe d the year's rolling . As a finishing touch to a successful season, the cove ted trophies at the Bowling Banquet were awarded to the most consistent scorers. Bro. Nothing need be said about the Chaminade basketball team this year, for the record speaks for itself. Recovering from its initial loss to highpowered Toledo Macomber, Chaminade bounced back to a victory streak of 14 games which sent the statisticians searching through their record books. The team progressed from game to game, and even Toledo Central Catholic, who ranked among the first ten in the state, fell before the highflying Eagles in their prime. Then the walls came tumbling down as happens to many good ball clubs. Roosevelt and Fairview felt the Eagle might, and before the largest crowd ever to witness a high school game in Dayton, defending champ, Dunbar, fell by the wayside. Then the Eagles swooped low. Defeats at the hands of Wilbur Wright and a keyed-up Stivers team took the championship away from the Eagles. Chaminade reo covered slowly, defeating Monroe and Oakwood, only to be taken by a sharp-shooting Roosevelt in tournament play. Chaminade was far from ashamed of its performances and placed Jerry Hagan, Babe Perkins, and Don Shumard on the All-City teams.
