Aviation makes a strong appeal to the imagination of the young man. Its fascinating appeal induced my brother Wilbur and myself to take it up in our youth as a sport, without any expectation of financial reward . Aviation is now an industry and has grown marvelously in the last ten years.

"But it does not now, and probably cannot for many years, furnish employment to more than a small per cent of those who would like to engage in it. This, however, should not prevent many from participation in it as a sport.

DEDICATION After spending their spare time experimenting with gliders for about five years, Wilbur and Orville Wright, of Dayton, became interested in the feasibility of a heavier than air machine for flying and, after considerable research on air pressures, propellers, and small engines, they constructed what is now known as the airplane. On December 17, 1903, .Wilbur Wright flew their invention several hundred feet in 12 seconds at an approximate speed of 30 miles per hour, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Thus, the first plane took flight-history had been made by two brothers from Dayton. A new industry was in the making; one that has benefited the world as greatly as any preceding industry or anyone since then.

As usual the world failed to comprehend the magnificent feat which had been accomplished, and was somewhat slow to develop the trem endous possibilities which it offered. Courage and confidence were necessary to pursue further in this new field , but the Wright Brothers had that courage and confidence to continue. Others at home and abroad b egan experimenting, too, and finally the U. S. Government became sufficiently interested and saw the practicability of the airplane.

By the time of the World War the airplane was far enough advanced to prove itself a great asset. The "flying jennies," as the planes of that day were called, were very useful in both offensive and defensive fighting for the Allies as well as the Central Powers. After the War, many more inventions in the field of aeronautics continued to increase the use of planes for several purposes.

In 1923 the Government inaugurated the air mail service, carrying mail from New York to the Pacific Coast in 35 hours, thus making the transcontinental flight in 60 hours less than the fastest train. But this was only the beginning.

Present day air mail service from the Atlantic seaboard to shores of the Pacific requires just 27 hours. This service is wonderfully efficient and has contributed greatly to the advances made in the business world.

During the middle twenties, numerous haphazardly constructed airports sprang up across the country and passengers were taken up one at a time at small cost just for the thrill of flying.

It was not, however, until 1932 that passenger transportation on a large, economic, and efficient basis was begun. During the past four years many reliable air transportation companies have been organized and now carry passengers on r egular scheduled flights. It is possible at present to leave New York in the evening and be in Los Angeles ready for the next business day, 17 hours later. This is truly a remarkable fact.

So, as aviation has progressed throughout the world in the past 33 years, we find the original flight of several hundred feet at 30 miles per hour by the Wright Brothers incomparable with the present record of a 7,707 mile non-stop, nonrefueling flight by Commander Michael Gromoff of Russia and the speed record for land planes which Howard Hughes holds at 353 miles per hour.

Indeed, this is a splendid example of progress originating with Dayton's own Wright Brothers, of whom Orville Wright still survives. It is for this reason that we, the Seniors of 1936, humbly dedicate our Pictorial to Orville Wright.

ATHLETICS Another sport's year is ended and another record posted. Football, basketball, golf, tennis and track-all have and are living up to the standards of Chaminade.

Of the five major sports, football, as usual, dominated the spotlight. On the gridiron, the "Exemplary Eagles" turned in the greatest record in the history of the school-losing but one and tieing another of eight games. Through the combined efforts of Coach Gerard "Fuzzy" Faust and Brother Lawrence Eveslage, Athletic Director, the Eagles came within a touchdown of the City Championship, ending the season in second place, while five of the Eagle Squad made All-City first team.

In our first game, with Cincinnati Xavier, the Green came through with a handy victory. The following game, our only loss of the year, ended with Stivers winning for the sixth consecutive time. On October 5, a mediocre and disheartened

Eagle tied a vastly superior Fairview Bulldog in the last minute of play. After this let-down, an inspired Green-clad fighting machine decisively defeated Steele, Springfield Catholic, Kiser, Hamilton Catholic, and Roosevelt. The grand total gave Chaminade 139 scored points to their opponents' 40.

In basketball, a better-than-average quintet b roke even, winning 7 and losing 7. In the Big Seven, Kiser, Steele, and Co-op fell before the Eagles while Stivers, Roosevelt and Fairview took the nod over our Green and White Warriors.

As the Pictorial goes to press, the track team has shown three wins, against Co -op, Kiser and Stivers, while losing four meets.

Intramural sports have continued to enjoy student popUlarity.

Senior B led the basketball league and won the tournament, the first class to perform this feat.

The soft ball schedule is not yet completed.

C.S.M.C. ACTIVITIES The Spiritual activities for the past year were under the capable direction of Brother Joseph Becker, S.M. Dividing the school into thirteen separate units with individual officers as representatives, Brother Joseph gained the cooperation of the Crusaders and guided them through an active and profitable year. Among the many activities in the school were the collecting of several hundred text books for St. John's Colored Miss'i on, and the presenting of a Christmas program on conditions in Russia.

Under the guidance of Father Gavin, from St. John's, the annual three days' retreat held on October 9, 10, and 11 , was the real opening of our spiritual activities.

Fifty-one baskets of food and more than a hundred toys were collected and distributed among the needy in the week preceding Christmas. In the Annual Magazine and Paper Drive our student , crusaders set a new all- time record by collecting 112 tons. The proceeds of the drive were turned over to the faculty for the benefit of the home and foreign missions.

During the week of February 24 to 28, a display of 100 Catholic magazines and 75 newspapers was held in the reading room of our library. The display was larger than the one held two years ago.

Our Catholic Information Society maintained a regular mailing list of 75 non-Catholics to whom

PRESIDENTS -

JOSEPH A. BECKER, S.M. were mailed periodical pamphlets containing explanations of misunderstood Catholic beliefs.

Other activities included a commemoration of the closing of the Eucharistic Congress, the send ing of 80 pounds of stamps to the Marianist Stamp Center at Cleveland Cathedral Latin School, a school-wide mission exhibit and indi vidual class correspondence with foreign missioners.

Three of our Crusaders went to follow more closely the Lord. Charles Rohrkemper, '35, went to St. Gregory's seminary, while James Hickey and Robert Hoeper went to Mount Saint John Postulate to prepare to enter the Society of Mary.

Under the capable presidency of Mrs. Louis Clarke, the Chaminade Mothers' Club has had a busy season. Much praise must also go to the other officers who worked tirelessly and finally to the Mothers whose cooperation really made the work of the year a decided success.

Sponsored by the Mothers were the Turkey Raffle, the raffle of a hand sewed quilt made by Mrs. Amann, the card parties and dance, and last but not last the covered dish party, one of the most

enjoyable socials ever held at the School.

Through these undertakings enough money was gathered to purchase an entire new set of curtains for the main floor windows, drapes and shades for the library and the linoleum in the main corridor.

... still a Pioneer tn 1936 IT HAS BEEN only a few short years, as time is reckoned, since Frigidaire first came to Dayton. And in those few years, Frigidaire, together with the pioneers in Dayton who are responsible for its growth to world prominence, has led the field in almost every single advancement that has come to the industry. First, it was the wide¡spread education of the public to the necessity for proper refrigeration. Then it was the enlightenment of millions as to the savings made possible by mechanical refrigeration.

Always has Frigidaire led in development of a product that continuously has been the standard by which refrigeration is judged.

Now, in 1936, Frigidaire still is pioneering .. . still is the leader in what we believe will be another great advancement in the industry.

A refrigerator, to be worthy of the money invested in it, must keep safe temperatures for the proper preservation of food. It must operate at the very minimum of cost.
