Summer may be hot and humid but we still welcome its arrival.And when it becomes too much to tolerate we know that it’s a relatively short escape to the mountains or the shore for some relief.We really have the best of both worlds living in the Upstate of South Carolina. Lucky us! Whether you’re at home this Summer or headed elsewhere on some adventure, I hope you’ll take along this copy of our magazine to while away the Summer days. There are some intriguing articles for your perusal. One couple whose home is featured can retreat to their gorgeous getaway, with its neutral palette décor, on the banks of Lake Keowee. here are a multitude of reasons to add container plantings to your porch, garden or patio: added color; added fragrance; added veggies (think tomatoes), herbs or citrus; and added space for the chipmunks or squirrels to hide their nuts for later. Okay, maybe that last one is not really valid although it oftentimes seems that my backyard critters think that’s why the pots are there! We recently attended a containerplanting seminar at Martin Nursery in Greenville and they graciously allowed us to photograph the staff and attendees in action. Hopefully you’ll gain some inspiration for your own pots while viewing the beautiful combos in this feature. Of course we could provide you with the names of the plants in each of the featured containers. But that would take away the fun. Visit your local plant nursery and indulge your own unique creative abilities.

BETH FORTUNE OF MARTIN NURSERY RECOMMENDS THREE MAIN INGREDIENTS TO CREATE AN APPEALING CONTAINER: Thrillers, Spillers and Fillers. 1. Thrillers. A thriller is a plant used in the middle or the back of the container to give the arrangement height and drama. Examples of thriller plants: grasses, rosemary, spikes, angelonia, caladiums, coreopsis and yarrow. 2. Fillers. Filler plants are used in the middle of the container to intermingle and fill the gap between the thrillers and spillers. By using different colors and textures, you’re creating a container that’s full as well as colorful. Examples of filler plants: autumn ferns, coral bells, lantana, Diamond Frost euphorbia, pentas, begonias, New Guinea impatiens and coleus. 3. Spillers. A spiller is selected to spill over the container, softening the edges. This can be as simple as ivy or a plant that flowers as well. Examples of spiller plants: ivy, bacopa, creeping jenny, petunias, million bells, sweet potato vine, thyme and wire vine. When planting a container, consider the location and amount of light. Using plants with similar growing conditions will help guarantee success. Be creative with your container selection as well as plant selection. Don’t be afraid to mix perennials with annuals or use small shrubs for your thriller. ah SU MME R 2012 I 21

ers: Design with a Feminine Touch” by Jacqueline deMontravel is a delightful design idea book for establishing a feminine space in any style home. Ms. deMontravel believes that all women need a space for their own use, whether it’s a place to be creative, to relax or to work – or a spot to share with family and friends. Jacqueline deMontravel certainly has the background to author this book. She is the editor of Romantic Homes magazine and oversees such publications as Cottages & Bungalows and Victorian Homes. In “Hers,” she features style ideas garnered from some of her very creative friends. She shows, for example, how a home with three young boys can still have a feminine side and a retreat for the woman of the house. While the title may invoke thoughts of pink lace and large cabbage roses on wallpaper, the book covers much more than the traditional. Ms. deMontravel shows how any style, be it Coastal, French, Ethnic, Gustavian or Romantic, can be adapted to a special feminine interpretation. She even goes past interior design to suggest ideas for outside space as well as hostess tips. The amazing rooms pictured in this book are inspiring, but not so overwhelming that they require a professional to implement them. Ms. deMontravel explains how to work in any space – small, large, multifunctional, etc. – and use any of the styles you have decided are “you.” “Hers” would be a wonderful gift for

hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than a dip in a nicely chilled swimming pool. Hopefully, you are fortunate enough to have fond memories of lazy afternoons spent around the nearest community pool or in your own backyard pool. Our son and his friends were mostly waterlogged by the end of summer vacation.
Whereas the basic backyard pool of yesteryear was most likely a rectangle with perhaps a diving board and the occasional slide, today there are a lot more options available. If you have a killer view you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go wrong with an infinity edge on your backyard pool. This type of pool edge is thought to have first appeared in the 1600s at the Palace of Versailles. Although this is the most difficult type of pool to construct, it is well worth the effort. The slope of this property allows for a captivating waterfall view too. The pool has a finish on the deck that comes in different colors and textures and stays cool in hot weather. That makes it easier on the tootsies.

pstate designer Nicole Belue – the daughter of a builder and land developer – has seemingly spent her life with a paintbrush in one hand and a copy of Architectural Digest in the other. So when the mother of two boys discovered eco-friendly paint that flawlessly covered a room and did so without the powerful fumes and toxic ingredients to which she’d become accustomed, she breathed a sigh of relief. The CEO of that paint company? Well, he just happened to be a friend, so Belue promptly created a color palette for his line of environmentally friendly baby nursery paints – one that blended the organic with the evocative. The result is the newly released Lullaby Paints, made by Upstate-based Imperial Paints and now being marketed coast to coast. At a time in the design world when paint can have a cult following (think Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint™ line) and when decorator “pinboards” are the new paint chip (thanks to addictive Web sites like Pinterest), Lullaby Paints is perfectly positioned to reach the nurseries of eco-minded parents everywhere – all from a small factory in Spartanburg County. Lullaby Paints is appealing and unique in all the right ways, from its chic packaging in metallic, resealablespouted plastic pouches to the noticeable lack of smell when it is rolled on the wall. Best of all, perhaps, despite being new to the marketplace, the paint has the benefit of more than two decades of experience. The parent company of Lullaby is Imperial Paints, and it was formerly the U.S. subsidiary of a British paint company that has been making nontoxic paints for 20-plus years, having garnered numerous awards including the UK Seal of Approval, the Daily Telegraph/ NatWest Bank Clean Technology Award, and the Glaxo Welcome Responsible Business Award. company’s Spartanburg facility, and although a handful of components are imported, most are domestic and include benign ingredients like chalk, wood products and resins. So what looks like a new product to expectant parents shopping color swatches is actually a proven, premium paint, explains Julian Crawford, CEO of Imperial Paints. It applies evenly, dries quickly, has rich color and good sheen, and it does not peel or flake. Its flexible, trendy packaging fits nicely on a store shelf, or even in a gift box. And while a regular gallon of paint might cover 350-400 square feet, Lullaby Paints, which cost about $68 a gallon, covers about 560. “When parents go to a retail nursery store they can find organic cribs, bedding, clothing, toys – they sell everything except paint,” Crawford explains in an English accent that belies his Upstate residency. “The whole focus of that industry is on quality and safety. Our product places perfectly in that environment. I have yet to meet someone who learns about this and doesn’t say, ‘You know what? That makes sense.’” No wonder the line is already being picked up by more than 100 retailers from coast to coast – largely children’s boutique nursery stores – all in a matter of months. Regionally, shops in Charlotte, Atlanta, Boca Raton and New Orleans have signed on to sell it. The packaging requires minimal space on store shelves, which makes it easier to sell in small retail settings, and its package design prevents wasted product and preserves leftover paint longer. Belue’s involvement with Imperial Paints came last year, as the company prepared to market the Lullaby Paints line to the baby retail marketplace. Longtime friends, Crawford was familiar with Belue’s knack for chic,

Children spend more hours in their rooms than

hen Tom Ervin and Kathryn Williams bought a lot at the Cliffs at Keowee Springs in 2008, the busy Greenville lawyers wanted a serene lakeside home that took them worlds away from work – but wasn’t worlds away. “They wanted a place to forget the to-do list while enjoying a sunset cruise, but where, if needed, they could spend a Friday working just as efficiently as they do at their office. And to top it all off, they wanted a home that was designed to USGBC LEED for Home standards, so the architectural and interior design had to meet rigorous criteria for efficiency and sustainability. It was a tall order, but after working with architects at Johnston Design Group, interior designers at Linda McDougald Design, landscape designers J. Dabney Peeples Design and Seamon Whiteside, and builder Jeff Tutman – and incorporating their own personalities, hobbies and interests – they got everything they wanted and more. “The home is inspired by the English Country tradition with an emphasis on the use of natural, authentic materials and architectural antiques – it is all about connection to nature,” notes Scott Johnston of Johnston Design Group. “We further tie in sustainability elements through the broad reliance on renewable energy and rain water collection. The home seamlessly incorporates geothermal, solar thermal and solar photovoltaic technologies, which reduces the energy demand of the home by half, and we collect rain water for irrigation of the extensive gardens.” The three-level home features the lakeside views Kathryn loves as well as the view of the mountains Tom wanted. The large windows and neutral color palette allow the stunning scenery to remain the focus in as many rooms as possible. “We wanted to allow the Lake Keowee views to become part of the interior,” Williams says. Williams is a woman who knows what she wants. During an almost 30-year legal career, she has tenaciously represented injured workers, among other clients, and has been named in Best Lawyers in America by her peers. She was also the first – and still the only – woman elected president of the S.C. Trial Lawyers’ Association. INSIDE AND OUT In a nod to Old English Country architecture, the home uses the same materials on the exterior and interior. For example, the limestone and iron accents outside are repeated inside on the stairs, which features iron rails and limestone treads.

Tom Ervin has practiced law since 1977, and at age 32, he was the youngest circuit judge ever elected to the S.C. Judiciary. Kathryn tried her very first jury trial in front of him as a rookie lawyer. They met again 17 years later at a judicial reception, “and we’ve been together ever since,” Williams says. When they married in 2003, Ervin retired from the bench and joined her law practice. Their busy schedules inspired them to find a second home that was close to home. “We built it as a getaway, but we knew if we had a place too far from home, we wouldn’t use it,” Williams says. “This is just 30 miles from Greenville and we’re in a different world.” This innovative couple wasn’t interested in the typical lake house look, instead creating a style Williams calls “English Country with an edge.” The materials – limestone, slate, iron – are traditional English Country, but the interiors are a comfortable mix of new and old, and full of clean, simple lines. The entrance to the home evokes the English Country feel, with an arched doorway and three rectangular openings that bring in natural light. The wrought iron door is an antique salvaged from Argentina, which holds special meaning for Williams since she spent her early childhood living there. The door is just a hint of the ironwork that punctuates the home. “I just think there is nothing any prettier than ironwork,” Williams says. “It’s pretty without being fussy or too feminine, because I’m not about frills and ruffles.” The entryway and dining area feature vaulted brick ceilings and dramatic beams that were faux finished to achieve an aged appearance. “The stairway of our home, located in the entry, is itself a stunning work of art. Patterned after the design of the antique balcony found for the master bedroom, the railings are custom-crafted from iron and the treads are limestone,” notes Williams. The dining room opens to the main living area, where a 19th century iron door from Italy – this one hung over the coursed limestone fireplace – offers a focal point in the neutral-toned room. “It takes some courage to do a no-color house, but we’ve just loved it,” Williams adds. A refurbished satin ebony 1913 Steinway piano holds court in one corner, and while Williams enjoys playing, “my husband says we should sue my piano teacher for malpractice,” she says with a laugh. She calls her peaceful master suite “the prettiest bedroom I’ve ever seen,” and credits Linda McDougald with designing an entire room around a French blue antique mirror the couple had previously purchased. Tom likes paneled walls, so McDougald designed panels painted with an aged finish and had the antique mirror integrated into the paneling. The antique French Empire chandelier builds on the peaceful feel of the room, while the balcony beckons with more antique Argentinean ironwork.
One of the guest bedrooms, used by visiting friends or the couple’s grown children, features an antique Louis Philippe armoire with cabinetry built around it, adding both storage and visual interest. Antique botanical prints and artwork continue the neutral theme, and a copy of Glimpses, a book of poetry Tom published in college, is on display. Kathryn was impressed with Tom’s poetry when they began dating, “but like my piano playing, it’s gotten a little rusty,” she jokes.

PERSONAL GLIMPSES Prominently showcased is Glimpses, a book of poetry Tom Ervin had published while a college student. The guest room is dominated by an antique Louis Philippe armoire, which is surrounded by custom cabinetry. The home theater, a favorite spot for Tom during college football season, has a refined Art Deco design.
Tom loves college football, so a home theater with a big screen was a must. “He parks there from August until when the Super Bowl comes on,” Williams says. The media room, with a nod to refined Art Deco design, includes a huge screen and plenty of comfy seating – which caused the couple’s only design argument. Ever practical, Tom wanted armchairs with built-in cup holders, but Kathryn deemed them “tacky.” She agreed to the armchairs, but stood firm on nixing the cup holders in favor of sleek polished nickel tables.

On the home’s top level is the dining porch, which, except for the limestone fireplace, is wrapped in windows, affording unbelievable views of the lake and mountains. With linen-slipcovered chairs, a table designed by McDougald and custom-made by Trey Sherman, and Apache bluestone floors, this is where the couple dines most often. An exterior spiral staircase allows quick access to the outdoors and the dock. Out on their pontoon boat or curling up on the porch with their two miniature Schnauzers, Ervin and Williams
are reaping the rewards of their three-year adventure creating this nearby getaway. Williams – who has no desire to retire in the near future – loves her job, but also loves having a place to unwind. “When I walk in after a stressful week,” she says, “the house almost seems to wrap its arms around me and practically demands that I take a seat and soak in every moment.” ah

Interior designer Lindsay Carmody knew having a child would change her life, but she didn’t realize how much it would transform her style – for the better. Carmody, whose daughter Ila is 2 and a half, says her style has gotten bolder and more whimsical, and she’s become much more confident with color. “I used to be so fearful of color, and now I can’t get enough,” she says. “I love colors and patterns I can mix together.” Though children do add challenges to decorating – “I understand messes, spills and the day-to-day craziness,” she says with a laugh – she enjoys factoring kids into her plans “because it makes me not so serious when it comes to design.” As an example in her own home, she cites the chalkboard paint that covers the front of a low cabinet in the kitchen. It’s great for jotting notes or messages, and Ila enjoys doodling while mom and dad cook meals. While sophistication and elegance always have their place, Carmody likes the “lively, personable” feel that kid-friendly designs bring to a home. Carmody grew up in New Jersey and then attended the Art Institute of Colorado in Boulder, where she met her husband Joe, a project manager for a metal fabrication company. While earning a bachelor of arts degree in interior design, she worked as a design assistant in Denver. SU MME R 2012 I 73

After three years, she was offered a job in Greenville as an in-house designer for a company building homes in the Cliffs communities. A few years later, she went into business with a partner, but for the past four years, she’s been working on her own. “I always dreamed of working from home, starting a family and doing my own thing out of my own house,” she says. The house has become not just her home and her office, but an ever-evolving project that reflects her style, which she defines as “not truly traditional or truly modern,” but a mixture of the things that draw her in. She fell in love with her home in the Augusta Road area in part because of its history. “I have always had a love for older houses,” she says. “They are not perfect, but they are perfect in my eyes. That’s what makes them charming.” The inside has a bright, modern feel, but the outside has classic appeal, with a gas lamp, towering trees, and creeping fig climbing the walls. “I’m obsessed with it,” she says of the rapidly growing plant, and she looks forward to when it clambers up the steps and reaches the chimney. The living room greets guests with a soothing color palette that gets plenty of sunlight thanks to windows large and small. She loves the seagrass rug, which she says goes Pale blue walls lighten up the living room, while neutral and botanical accessories add personality. Removing plantation shutters brought in light and showcases the room’s unique small windows. Though Carmody loves color, she did not like the jumble created by her book collection â&#x20AC;&#x201C; so she covered every one with brown kraft paper. Among the monochromatic collection, she mixed blackand-white photos with white and silver accessories picked up on her travels. Carmodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s husband Joe spent an entire summer refinishing all of the cabinets and adding beadboard accents in the kitchen. Going with inexpensive beadboard and keeping the existing countertops kept costs to a minimum. An added touch is wallpaper on the inside of cabinet doors.

with anything and resists wear and tear. “We have a twoyear-old and a dog, and stains do not show,” she says. Two bright green leather ottomans on casters can be rolled to serve as a footrest or extra seating, and an antique cabinet makes a chic spot for the television. The bookshelves showcase Carmody’s attention to detail. Though she loves color, the clashing shades of her book collection were not appealing, so she covered each one with brown paper, even buying additional books from thrift stores to cover and add to her collection. That led the pared-down palette of the built-ins: black-and-white photos, brown-covered books and white accessories, many picked up on travels. The dining room boasts soft purple paint below the chair rail, with colorful wallpaper above. Her round table was purchased at Pottery Barn and then refinished, while the Curry and Co. chandelier is a personal favorite thanks to its unique lines, aged finish and reasonable price. A zebra rug underneath the table was a gift from her motherin-law and adds a touch of “cool.” Distressed chests are topped with massive black lamps that offer a lesson in interior design. While many would say that the lamps are too large for the room, “that’s what’s so great about them,” Carmody says. If she loves something, she is happy to break the “rules.” The adjacent sunroom is a colorful nook, with cozy chairs and boldly patterned drapes. Painted tonal stripes add inexpensive interest to the walls and bring in a favorite color combination. “Lavender, or any purple, with chartreuse and light blue,” she says. “I could go on and on. Light blue to me is like a neutral.” The kitchen is a reflection of Lindsay’s style and husband Joe’s handiwork, with a newly squared entryway (formerly arched). Joe did the casing and the crown molding and even spent a summer in the garage with a

sprayer, taking the cabinets from stained to white. Always aware of budgets for herself and her clients, Carmody considered new countertops but decided to stick with the old granite to cut costs. Other inexpensive touches include the beadboard backsplash and a vivid wallpaper pattern – installed on the inside of the cabinets. “It’s a fun little ‘oh wow’ when you open the door,” she says. The same wallpaper is also tucked inside the large storage chest in the kitchen, which she had refinished by Barb Blair at Knack. Down the hall is Ila’s room, where Carmody’s whimsical style and passion for color is used to great effect. “The idea was, if we were going to spend money on her room, we needed to make it something she could grow into,” Carmody says. “I wanted her to have a fun room, but without a baby feel. We wanted her to be able to enjoy this room at least until she’s 8 or 10.” Her husband added floating shelves – home to the collection of Blabla dolls – while the papier-mâché antelope head and bird-accented stool are from Stray Dog Designs. The attention-grabbing drapes include banded shades that let her darken the room at nap time and bring in her favorite blue, chartreuse and purple color scheme. The room exemplifies her belief that interior design is not about filling spaces or following rules, but about incorporating the things that speak to you and draw you in – something she brings to her work for clients as well as projects in her own home. “It’s bright, it’s a lot of color, and it might not be the exact choice some would say goes together,” she says. “But we just love it.” ah
A child’s room is the perfect place to indulge a love of color, and Carmody does so with flair in Ila’s room. ur cabin was designed for my active family of four and specifically for how we intended to use the space. Located in Western North Carolina near Waynesville, this is our base camp for ski trips to Cataloochee and day trips to nearby destinations. It is a wonderful place for our kids to play. The program was simple: design a home that lives much larger than its footprint and purposefully eliminates waste, both spatial and environmental. Small, economical, unique and comfortable are the goals that I set out to achieve. While the cabin needed to be sufficient to accommodate our family and friends, I also wanted it to be small in scale. Large sliding doors between the indoor and covered outdoor spaces allow for an uninterrupted transition, resulting in a seemingly larger gathering area. Why else come to the mountains if you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t live outside? We have spent so many hours on the covered porch listening to the rain and letting our kids color with chalk on the deck floor. The 1,100-squarefoot cabin actually houses three floors; taking (BELOW) - Large sliding doors provide for a seamless flow from interior to exterior. (OPPOSITE) - The third story is a ladder-accessible loft that has become the perfect play spot for the Tindall's son and his friends.

Our family getaway was an opportunity to take advantage of ideas and principles that I pursue in my own practice. I wanted to design a space that was sustainable, open, efficient and unique to the mountain context. It was important that the home become a reflection of the sustainable initiatives that I find important in residential design. I specifically wanted to minimize energy consumption and waste. Salvaged materials were used throughout the home to demonstrate environmental responsibility and to help keep costs within reason. Discounted, reclaimed and industrial materials were used throughout.

The interior wood paneling, antique column, exterior cedar columns, water heater and pedestal sink are all examples of reclaimed items. Many of these items were gathered and stored prior to the start of construction. This allowed for the design to evolve around these found materials, creating a very rich and unique assemblage of design elements. As a foundation for the overall concept, the house was designed on a 4â&#x20AC;&#x2122;x4â&#x20AC;&#x2122; grid to eliminate as much construction waste as possible. Much of the leftover construction materials have since been used for other projects, including a unique tree house at our Greenville home for our children. The cabin is oriented on the site to take advantage of passive solar energy. Its orientation and design also consider the natural breezes to aid in passive cooling during the summer months. On a summer day, you can feel a gentle breeze in the house with the doors to the porch wide open. While local codes require a thermostatically controlled
heating system, the wood-burning stove was selected as the primary heat source for the home in the winter. As supplement heat on really cold nights, electric radiant heating is used. This type of system allowed us to eliminate any unsightly ductwork and vents and helps to reduce allergens in the home. Our cabin became a unique opportunity to design solutions that everyday practice might not afford. This was a design-build effort and allowed me to conceive and fabricate much of the cabinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interior myself. I fabricated the stair railing, milled the interior paneling from reclaimed exterior siding, cast the concrete tiles, and built the sliding barn door and ladder to the play fort. The design and construction of these elements helped to achieve an overall design statement that complemented all of the found items and materials throughout the home. We love this place. This is our little cabin in the woods and a great experience for our family. There are no rules in the house. One of the design concepts was for this to be an easy place to live, and it lives up to our expectations. ah

B Falling in Love with an Orange
eyond those flawless, redyellow globes perfectly placed on grocery store shelves, my first real vision of citrus on trees happened from the window of a 1968 aqua blue Winnebago Camper. I was listening to an 8-track of the Monkees, singing “Daydream Believer.” My dad at the wheel, we were on our way to Florida – Vacation Land in the Sunshine State. Then the orange groves caught my attention. Standing on point like dancers draped in glossy green leaf and orange polka-dotted tutus, the trees in mass seemed like the corps de ballet in wait for the prima donna on opening night. Although they stood still, the magical trees, adorned with flowers in their branches, twirled oranges from under their skirts to the flat sandy soil splashing color and fragrance into the warm salty air. fall in love with an orange and – as I later learned – I was not the only one to have fallen under the intoxicating spell from the fragrance of orange blossoms and the tasty fruits. Long in history, the orange blossom was the symbol of love, and was a constant at weddings from the Greeks to the Romans to the ancients in China. According to Greek mythology, when the goddess Hera married Zeus, the king of heaven, she was given orange blossoms by Gaea, the goddess of earth and fertility.
The origins of the orange are traced to ancient China, and brides there adorned themselves in the orange blossom – the symbol of purity, chastity and innocence – for their weddings. As this tradition spread to India and Persia, the Europeans who battled the “Crusades” brought the tradition to Europe, and then the custom broadened to the colonies in America. Even Queen Victoria wore a wreath of orange blossoms when she married Prince Albert, as did Jacqueline Kennedy when she wed Aristotle Onassis. These aromatic flowers have been used to create perfumes, incense and orange blossom water, and citrus fragrances are used by elegant perfume makers like Calvin Klein, Chloé and Ralph Lauren to arouse the love of men and women. As for lemons, it is widely presumed they originated in southern India and
China, and were used as an antiseptic and antidote for various poisons. Although scurvy was known even in the days of Hippocrates (400 BC), it was not until 1932 that the disease was connected to the lack of vitamin C. Lemons arrived in Europe, near southern Italy around the 1st century AD, during the times of ancient Rome, and later traveled to Persia and Egypt around 700 AD during the Muslim conquests. Although life in the countryside was deteriorating, cities like Constantinople flourished, and courtyard gardens, Orangeries and Limonaias became a focal point of the home and statement of wealth by the 1500s. In India, the lemon was used for many purposes, such as traditional medicines and Ayurveda, and is still one of the main ingredients in Indian cuisine. In the south of India, pickled spiced whole lemons are eaten daily for lunch. As with many foods that exchanged between Europe and the Americas, Christopher Columbus brought lemon seeds to Hispaniola on one of his voyages and the French brought them to New Orleans. I like to think that some of the trees I adored from the window of the Winnebago were their distant relatives. One of the rare fruit trees which bloom and bear at the same time, this lovely creature in a beautiful container creates a theatrical aspect to any garden. At the front entrance to a gate, or by the front door, or in a space where you relax after work, a citrus plant in a summer garden provides a unique splash of color and fragrance. The sweet-smelling blossoms will not all produce fruit, and although many will fall from the tree like young love, they can be used in cooking as an aromatic spice. Obviously some will eventually become fruit, pollinated by bees or other insects, thus a summer outdoors is necessary.

GardentoTable A few orange trees like Clementine mandarins need to be cross-pollinated, and require another tree nearby. The fruits can be left on the trees for long periods without danger of over-ripening. Ideally planted in terra-cotta, a material that breathes, citrus loves bright light and an airy space, with soil that drains well. The plants can remain outside until the temperatures drop into the upper 30s and then winter in the house by a bright window facing south or west and away from heating vents. The breeze of a ceiling fan in the room helps reinvent outdoor conditions where you keep the citrus indoors only through the coldest of months. If it is small enough to move easily, a gentle cool shower every few weeks over leaves and branches limits the chances of a houseplant pest invasion. All citrus are frost-sensitive to some degree and although the leaves and stems can tolerate temperatures into the high 20s, the fruits will be damaged by freezing. Some varieties, like Kumquats, are more “cold hardy” than others. Citrus trees do require high amounts of nitrogen as a soil amendment, which can be as simple as applying composted grass clippings (no fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides added to the lawn of course). For good flower and fruit production, the trees also need phosphorus. Organic bone meal tends to be the best source; another recommended source is phosphate rock. It will also add calcium to the soil, and you don't have to worry about it burning the roots of your citrus tree. Beyond this love affair with the perfume and look of a citrus tree, there are some very practical reasons to grow your own. In our kitchen, orange and lemon zests are used on a weekly if not daily basis. If you purchase fruit from the store, eliminate the worry of pesticides and dyes on the peel by purchasing only organically grown fruits for your kitchen. Commercially grown grocery store citrus are typically sprayed with an artificial dye called Citrus Red No.
2, which is permitted by the FDA since 1956 only to color the skin of oranges. (California and Arizona have banned its use; however, Florida has not.) According to Michael F. Jacobson, Ph.D., executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, and Sarah Kobylewski, Ph.D. Candidate for Molecular Toxicology Program, University of California, Los Angeles: “Citrus Red 2, which is permitted only for coloring the skins of oranges not used for processing, is toxic to rodents at modest levels and caused tumors of the urinary bladder and possibly other organs. The dye poses minimal human risk, because it is only used at minuscule levels and only on orange peels, but it still has no place in the food supply.” Growing your own citrus eliminates any risk to using the peel in your food, and gives great satisfaction to any recipe you create. In fact, there are more health-promoting phytonutrients in the peel and white pulp than in the center; these help lower high blood pressure and cholesterol, and have shown antiinflammatory properties as well. As we returned many times to
Florida on our family vacations, I eagerly awaited that big giant sunshine at the state border where you could stop and have a taste of fresh-squeezed orange juice. Yet, the thought of visiting the far-away citrus only every now and then did not satisfy the need for love of an orange. An evergreen tree that has the ability to bloom in all seasons, and bear fruit at the same time, speaks volumes on love: from the delicate young blossoms to the delicious fruits full of promise for the future, to the tough green undying leaves, perpetual and enduring. The pleasure of potted citrus in my garden is exotically locally grown, and offers freshly picked tropical gratification within a few steps of my kitchen. I sit on my outdoor sofa in the evening after a long day of work, and the intense fragrance of the flowers takes my mind away to another world, a true aroma therapy for a Daydream Believer.

STUFFED ORANGES 2 oranges 4.4 oz. or 125 grams best fresh ricotta (possibly from sheep or goat) 1 spoonful sugar 1 oz. or 30 grams candied orange Cut the oranges in half and squeeze their juice without ruining the peel. Scrape all white parts from the peel and put the halved oranges in the freezer for at least 30 minutes. Work the ricotta with the orange juice, the sugar and the chopped candied orange. Add, if wanted, some chocolate nibs. Take the orange halves from the freezer and fill them with the ricotta preparation. Keep refrigerated till it is time to serve.
SPICY LIME SORBET ½ to 1 cup sugar or 113-226 grams (to taste) 1Ÿ cups or 295 ml. water 1-3 slivers habanero pepper, very finely cut without seeds (substitute with chilies if you prefer) 6-8 limes 1 egg white Serves 4-6 Put the sugar, water and hot pepper in a saucepan over low-medium. Heat, and stir occasionally until the sugar has dissolved and the water comes to a boil. Grate the zest from 3 limes into the mixture; cool, then chill. Squeeze the limes and add the juice without seeds to the cooled syrup, and then put in an ice cream mixer and follow the directions of the mixer.Beat the egg white and add it to the mixture while churning, until thick enough to scoop. Great alongside shrimp on the grill or other shellfish.

MACKEREL WITH ORANGES AND RED ONION SALAD 4 small fresh whole mackerels 1 onion 1 carrot 1 spoonful chopped parsley 1 bay laurel leaf 1 small hot pepper (habanero) 2 cloves 1.75 oz. or 50 grams white wine vinegar 1.75 oz. or 50 grams white wine salt 2 peeled and sectioned oranges 5.3 oz. or 150 grams Tropea type red onion extra virgin olive oil Clean the mackerels and dry them. Sprinkle some salt on both sides and put aside for 1 hour. In a thick bottom pot (better if earthenware) make a bed of carrots and onion, then add the chopped parsley, the bay leaf in pieces, the chopped hot pepper and the cloves. Put the mackerels on this bed, after you slice them, and cover with the white wine and vinegar. Put the pot on the stove and bring to a boil, then lower the heat and cook till the mackerel is done. Let cool and take the mackerel out. Strain the sauce and eventually reduce it further by boiling. Slice the Tropea onions very thinly, add the orange pieces, season with olive oil. Arrange the mackerel slices on a plate, cover with the reduced sauce and the side of orange and onion salad.

classic Southern-style home provided the perfect backdrop for Hunter Todd and Justin Lovvorn’s wedding and reception. The best part was that the home belongs to Hunter’s paternal grandparents, Elton and Doris Todd, who graciously welcomed family and friends for the stellar evening. As if that weren’t special enough, the marriage ceremony was performed by Hunter’s maternal grandfather, Reverend Kenneth Rhoden. This was truly a family affair. They are grateful to everyone who was involved in helping them prior to and the day of the wedding and for all the love and support they received throughout the process. We thank you Hunter and Justin for sharing this special time in your lives with us.
The reception was held in a beautifully decorated tent that had been erected on the lush grounds of the home. Credit goes to Wilrich Bridal (event planning), Dave McMillan (Memories by McMillan-florals) and Good Life Catering for their superb work. Uniquely personal were the wedding dresses displayed on the lower porch of the home. They belonged to Hunter’s mother, her maternal grandmother, her paternal grandmother and Justin’s mother.

Justin knew just the right time to propose to Hunter. He chose a stressful time during her college studies to tell her he knew how to relieve the stress. When she asked how, he got down on one knee and proposed. She said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;He knew that if he did anything out of the ordinary, I would suspect it, so he did it when I would least suspect it.â&#x20AC;? It worked!
Project Host, a local non-profit that is doing an incredible amount of social good through its culinary school and job-training program, catered the scrumptious food.
A unity candle lighting was part of the wedding ceremony. The smaller candles represent the bride and groom as individuals and were lit by their mothers. To symbolize their uniting as one, the larger candle was lit by the bride and groom. The smaller candles were then extinguished.
