Do Downtown Greenville is an initiative of several downtown merchants, restaurants, and hotels in partnership with the Greenville Journal. Our goal is to communicate to residents and visitors alike everything our downtown has to offer. Downtown Greenville presents opportunities unlike any other with noteworthy shops, remarkable restaurants, visual and performing arts venues, beautiful green spaces, and more. The redevelopment vision of the City of Greenville is to have “a thriving Downtown which is recognized nationally as an example of a ‘state-ofthe-art’ community in which to live, work, and play… which serves in itself as a national attraction.”

do downtown Take a Free Ride on the Downtown Trolley!

Come downtown and ride the trolley! The free service operates weekly from Thursday through Sunday. On Thursdays and Fridays, it runs from 6 to 11 PM; on Saturday, hop aboard from 10 AM to 11 PM; and on Sunday afternoons, experience it from 1 until 8 PM. Typically, you’ll find the trolleys traversing downtown from West Earle Street on the north end to Fields Street on the south end. The new route now includes Heritage Green. The trolleys stop at any intersection when hailed by a rider. The trolleys will seat 35 passengers and is expected to complete their route in about 45 minutes.

...In The Village Wander west into a funky fusion of art, retail and creative services

It’s First Friday in the Village of West Greenville, and this creative enclave is bursting with energy.

Boutiques and art galleries, even the “working studios,” have flung open their doors, welcoming visitors to not only browse but also chat with the artists who create a delightful array of paintings, pottery, glasswork, woodwork, photography, jewelry, clothing and more.

This particular month the collective event – always on the first Friday from 6-9pm -- includes two grand openings: a shared workspace comprising a florist, two photographers and a painter; and, just down the street, a ceramics studio/school. Clemson’s Center for Visual Arts-Greenville is hosting a book release party for “Sense of Place -First Friday in the Village Picturing Life in West Greenville.” There’s food and drink aplenty and, as usual, things Village of West Greenville are rocking at the Village’s music venues.

Second Chances A short wander west – just a mile beyond Main Street – finds you in the midst of this funky fusion of art, retail and creative services, where independent businesses are intermixed with still-vacant (but optimisticto-be-filled) storefronts.

“There is a LOT going on down here,” says Lily Wikoff, owner of Lily Pottery, pointing to myriad recent additions in the district ranging from a writers salon to a dress designer to an all-natural make-up studio. “The Village family is growing, with so many interesting businesses moving in. It’s an exciting time to be part of this community.”

beset by decades of disrepair, with storefronts shuttered upon the closing of the Brandon and Woodside mills. But blight, with a little luck and a lot of vision, transformed into opportunity – and today the Village is in the midst of an organic revival sparked some ten years ago by high-quality artists in search of low-dollar rents. Pendleton Street’s cheap space has become a magnet, attracting one creative venture after another into what’s turning into a southernized SoHo. “A couple of visionaries … saw an opportunity to create something special, a uniquely different part of the city with its own personality,” explains Charlie Thompson, owner/curator of Midtown Artery, who was drawn not merely by low rent but rather to the Village’s sense of place, where creativity is prized over conformity.

Even as West Greenville revitalizes, some people retain a negative perception of the oncedowntrodden district, Thompson says, but if and when they do venture into the Village “it’s fun to watch them learn that they have discovered a hidden jewel in the city.”

A Vibrant Vibe “The Village is urban and edgy but above all, friendly,” Thompson says, noting that local ownership in this chain-free enclave promises unparalleled customer service. “We constantly collaborate to find ways to improve (the public’s) experience. … Free and plentiful parking doesn’t hurt, either.”

A gritty vibe endures, despite the revival – and though it remains a diamond in the rough “we don’t want to be polished,” Wikoff says. “There’s a unique spirit in the Village. The artists, the boutique owners, the service providers here – we are different. We don’t just want to grow our own business – we want to build up this community.”

Dr. Mac Arnold agrees, and that’s why this month – in addition to live music on Friday and Saturday nights at his eponymous Blues Restaurant – he launched an eight-week music contest series on Thursdays from 7-10pm. Local musicians in a variety of genres are competing for a little money, a lot of bragging rights and, especially, a contract for a three-gig engagement at the Village’s popular music venue. “I want to encourage local musicians to be the best they can be -- I want to provide a place where they can up their game,” the famed bluesman says. “Me, I love jamming in the Village, so tell everyone else to come out here, too!”

...at Oktoberfest Go German with four days of food, spirits, music and fun

‘Tis the season when NOMA Square transforms into a Bavarian biergarten during a four-day celebration of authentic German food, music, games and beer.

As October brings beautiful fall weather downtown, NOMA Square hosts its second annual Oktoberfest Oct. 1-4. The event kicks off Wednesday at 5pm with the official tapping of the

keg and carries on through Saturday with beer provided exclusively by Paulaner HP; a delicious selection of authentic German food, including bratwurst and pretzels; and plenty of Bavarian-flavored entertainment.

The famous Paulaner Brewing Truck is bringing its traveling biergarten to town for this event, transforming North Main into a “little Bavaria” in just a few short hours. The truck is fully equipped with tables, taps and an abundance of Paulaner kegs (choose from Paulaner’s Munich Lager, Hefe-Weizen, or Paulaner’s Oktoberfest). The venue comes complete with a sound system, Bavarian decorations and traditional biergarten benches that can seat up to 350 guests.

Bands from across the Southeast are on tap for lively entertainment throughout the fourday festival, including The Foothills Oompah Band (Spartanburg), Holzhackern Tyrolean Band (Jamestown, NC), the Channellheimmer Oompah Band (Augusta, GA), the Walhalla Bavarian Dancers (Walhalla) and the Steubenville Tootlers (Greenville).

Patrons can play ping-pong and do the Chicken Dance, common activities of Oktoberfest. On Thursday night, contestants can show off their strength in a Beer Stein holding contest or impress the crowd during a Bratwurst eating contest.

At an event that’s gone to the dogs When Louie Sagedy takes to the stage on a second Wednesday at NOMA Square, he remarks that the venue – so recently renovated and re-branded – has totally gone to the dogs.

“I play lots of parties and clubs,” says Sagedy, the lead singer of regional act Vinyl, “but this is very different from my usual gig. Here, it’s all about creating a festive, dog-friendly atmosphere, a place where people can enjoy hanging out with their pets. We always have a blast.”

Here, of course, is Yappy Hour at NOMA Square, a free monthly gathering – a paw-ty, if you will – featuring live music, “yappetizers” and drink specials for the humans along with free treats and “pup-tinis” for the dogs. It’s a barking good time that takes place 6-8pm every second Wednesday during the spring, summer and fall months.

“There are always so many great dogs out here,” Sagedy says, “and what blows my mind is how well they all get along with each other.”

Between musical sets, Sagedy encourages dogs – and their owners – to come onstage to show off any cool tricks they’ve perfected. Some talk, others flip; one dog howls on cue, “and he also seems to howl when I play the Grateful Dead,” laughs Sagedy.

“He must be a former hippie!”

Sniffing Out New Friends A typical Yappy Hour crowd comprises some 50 dogs and nearly double that number of people. “We are a pet-friendly hotel so we also want to be a place where you can feel welcome hanging out with your dog downtown,” says Lauren Justus, special events manager at Hyatt Regency Greenville, who organizes the monthly paw-ty along with Heather Meadors, the hotel’s corporate director of community relations. “Yappy Hour is a great opportunity to get together and meet fellow dog owners and dog lovers in the community.”

That camaraderie is why Linda Schuett and her Catahoula Leopard Dog, Pepper, like to come, sit and stay at NOMA Square.

“When you have a dog you never meet a stranger,” says Schuett, a Yappy Hour regular.

And the pet/people-watching is pretty good, too, what with dogs in all shapes and sizes and owners of every demographic, from students to professionals to retirees.

“It’s always interesting to see all the various breeds, everything from tiny little lap dogs to really big dogs – and it’s quite a varied group of people, too,” Schuett says. “We like to get there early so I can watch everyone come in.”

Do Your Business NOMA Square was designed to draw people to the northern end of Main Street – and events such as Yappy Hour do exactly that.

“Dog-friendly is good for business,” says Tony Mooney, owner of Greenville Dog Wizard, a dog training service. “This event brings dog-lovers downtown, and that creates a spark for the shops and restaurants close to NOMA Square.”

Schuett agrees: “This is a wonderful way to showcase downtown.”

Mooney, like Schuett, is a familiar face at Yappy Hour, either with Ralphie, his own Boykin Spaniel mix, or a dog that he is training for a client.

“Owners enjoy a well-trained dog. It’s fun taking them out in public,” says Mooney, whose Ralphie is the poster pup for canine etiquette. “That’s why dogs like being well-trained – it means they get to go more places.”

And Yappy Hour is the ideal place to practice socialization.

“Ralphie enjoys mixing with the other dogs and there’s great camaraderie between owners, too,” Mooney says. “Everyone loves to talk about their dogs, so there’s always plenty of good conversation out here.”

Park in a deck and stay awhile to enjoy all of the sights and sounds of downtown Greenville during the holiday season. You’ll be glad you did!

Remember that free weekend parking is available in the Richardson Garage, conveniently located behind Piazza Bergamo on the corner of Richardson and W. North streets.

Additionally, the West Washington Deck has monthly and daily parking available. Daily rates are $1 for the first 2 hours, and $1 per hour thereafter, with a daily maximum of $6.

Parking is both affordable and accessible.

It’s only $1.50 for one hour in a garage and only $.50 for each additional 30 minutes. If you decide to stay the whole day, the most it will cost you is $6.00, as that is the maximum daily rate.
