THE COMPLEXITY PARADOX

NYC Aquarium and Public Waterfront In collaboration with: Andre Salazar and Melissa Mata

Based on the coral reef formation process which manifests the dichotomic relationship between a compound process and its simplified outcome, the design of the NYC Aquarium and Public Waterfront represents exactly that. It manifests how complexity and simplicity complement the other by exemplifying subsidence through space, form, and function. Complex paths with organic shapes connect the parks different activities with the site’s major urban nodes.

Inside, network paths connect the expositions giving visitors a dynamic experience, converging through the central space, which exhibits: three major tanks, fossils, and digital-interactive activities. To the side of the building, there is also a community center for the users to enjoy and take advantage of. The shotcrete structure, prominent at its entrance, progressively subsides towards the exit, defining the landscape where it lays upon.

The first objective was to connect all the existing transportation infrastructure to make it a convergent space in wich all networks were linked.

The external fluxes shape the internad promenades in an organic and complex was, shaping the space where the building will reside.

The simplicity and smoothness of the building, contrasts with the complexity of its athways and the landscape where it lays upon.

GEA APARTMENTS

Residential Buildings

The objective of the project from the beginning was to design social living buildings that are economically accesible for the middle to low class sector and still provide comfortable and enjoyable amenities and spaces for the users to enjoy and create memories in.

The towers are strategically located in a land which is close to various services (bus stops, pharmacies, gas stations, grocery shops, etc.) and entertainment (parks, mall centers, movie theaters, etc.)for the users to easily get to, which was essential for the type of sector that was aimed for.

The concept of Gea is to create a community within the proyect, since in most apartment towers, users hardly ever interact with each other.

In Gea this is achieved through common areas and different activities located throughout the project that kind of forces the users to cross paths with each other and gives them an opportunity to interact. A linear park that has a playground, a resting area, an outdoor gym and lots of vegetation, unifies the building of amenities (day care, business center, study room, play

room and 2 social rooms)with the apartment towers and ends with a large green area and courtyard. This helps create new and different ties between users and thus create a sense of security and comfort.

It is important to mention that to reduce costs, a structure of load-bearing walls for the towers was chosen, leaving the linear park permeable and using a frame system only for basements at the ends.

Apartment Type A

There are three types of apartments that vary between 77m2 (C), 88m2 (B) and 93m2 (A). Each

apartment has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 living room, a dining room, a kitchen and a laundry room. Apartment type A and B both have a family room which can turn into an office space. All bathrooms and spaces have natural ventilation.

The towers have 14 levels and each level has 12 apartments, 4 of each type. The floor varies due

to changes in the facade and different configurations on the balconies but the distribution of the apartments is maintained. All apartments are comfortable enough for a family of 4 and up to a family of 6 members. All apartments have 1 to 2 parking spaces.

Because Bosque 9 is located in Parque de la Industria, a proposed convention center with different activities and mixed use buildings, the main goal of the project is to integrate in an effortless way with everything that is going on in its' surroundings. The building seeks to integrate into the public

space through terraces in different levels that offer a diversity of activities and green roofs. The program offers three levels of retail stores with a movie theater and several restaurants, one level of community center, 2 levels of co-working space and 3 levels of private offices.

SOCIAL HOUSING FOR LOW INCOME FAMILIES

In collaboration with Estefania Miralles, Melissa Mata and CRI

The CRI organization is currently building housing for low-income families in different communities of the Municipality of Chimaltenango, Guatemala, based on a typical model which in some cases does not fully respond to the contextual situation. We considered necessary to improve several aspects of the design, to meet the climate needs and construction

with a budget limit of $ 3,000. The new housing proposal focuses in solving user problems. We propose a better spatial distribution and a facade that adapts to the weather throughout the year and thus improve the ventilation and natural lighting. Materiality was based on the combination of different materials that resist rain and cold, that are low cost and easy to get.

FINAL SOLUTION

The house has a total area of 31m2. ​​ It consists of two rooms, a kitchen and a porch. The porch unifies the spaces, works as a lobby for the rooms and it is related directly with the kitchen and with the outer space. It can be used throughout the day and to perform different activities for all members of the family, such as dining, working, playing or studying. It also comes with a set of stairs as the house is elevated.

The main room is 8m2. It has a double bed for parents. The room for the children is 4.90m2. It has a bunk bed with two beds where up to 4 people can sleep. Both rooms have storage shelves. The material used for the beds, shelves and the dividing wall between the rooms is treated cypress and it helps reinforce the main structure.

ITALIAN CULTURE INSTITUTE

Educational Building

For the design of the Institute of Italian Culture it was important to take in consideration the rich culture, traditions and the ways of the italians.

Some important aspects that were taken into account were: comfort, security, privacy, functionality and elegance. Because Italian culture highly values

privacy, the design of the building has some introversion to it. The main idea is that from the outside, there is no great understanding of what's going on inside but from the inside, you can still now what's going on outside and you can still have a connection with the surroundings. This is achieved by small

openings on the north facade and in the main hall. On the east facade, the direction of the windows are not the east but to the north. This not only gives privacy but it also doesn't let the direct sunlight enter the classrooms and offices. The rest of the program opens to the central space, a beautiful courtyard that unifies the project, there students can gather to study or relax.

The rest of the program is an auditorium, an art gallery, a cafeteria, offices, and regular and cooking classes.

Mixed Used Building

After carrying out an urban intervention in zone 9, it was sought to reactivate the zone since it is currently considered a passage zone and not a destiny zone. For this it was concluded that it was necessary to propose several buildings with different uses to reactivate help reactivate the area

and I chose to design a mixed-use building. The project is located in a corner in front of an two proposed linear parks. Using connectivity as a concept, a passage is created taking advantage of the proximity to the parks, so that the building and the various activities carried out within the project integra-

tes with them. The passage divides the site in two, which unifies both linear parks with each other and with the project. This also gives the opportunity to separate the program. The project provides homes between 35mt2 up to 75m2 with private amenities, a cafe, a pharmacy, a grocery store and 2 restaurants at the front. The partition gives place for the apartments to have enough privacy and to not be directly in fron of the streets. To solve the problem of sunning, wood mullions were proposed.
