Outbreaks Create Isolation

When living in Chicago years ago, I was involved on a philanthropic mission with the historical leper colony at Kalaupapa on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. What started out to be a single mission to support the final 90 leprosy patients in a community that for 150 years had been home to thousands of patients became a 15-year endeavor.

The community is still occupied by a final few residents, even though now there

is a cure for the disease and the mandatory quarantine at the isolated location at Kalaupapa was lifted in 1969.

The extensive publicity and exposure of our efforts brought alarming phone calls—even death threats. At the time, there was an awful leprosy racism, and after our visits, we were targeted by individuals and groups. Some made a point to avoid me in stores and gatherings because, to them, I was “a heathen spreading a disease.”

As Jenny Poplar mentioned in her “Only the Lonely” Feb. 25 opinion column, when the AIDS virus arrived in the late ’70s, the media made frequent references to leprosy—Hansen’s Disease—and made generalizations about both viruses with no basis or medical documentation.

For a while, AIDS was regarded in much the same way as people thought about leprosy: Both were considered highly infec-

tious, creating a need for those with the illnesses to stay away socially and avoid contact with society. The ignorance of leprosy and AIDS for years created stereotype situations. The result was lonely, unknown individuals who said nothing and avoided exposure of their condition until medical research provided a cure or a way to manage the disease.

And now with COVID-19, a disease that is indeed highly contagious even without physical contact with someone who has it, a similar plight has been created for patients, putting the at-risk and the infected in isolation, giving rise to the “unknown patient” that Poplar mentions in her article.

And all three diseases have in so many ways delivered millions of lonely, unknown patients.

My Girded Loins T

here are many things special about being a native Utahn. We were not only born here, but we stay here despite all the reasons a good number of other Utahns give us to leave. Many of us, myself included, have Utah roots that date to the earliest pioneers. Despite the fact that too many of those, myself excluded, have forgotten that they were not the first inhabitants here, nor the first to settle, we remain. And why not? We are surrounded by beauty, albeit the villages in which we mostly live are not so beautiful. The weather is nearly perfect a third of the time, but never on four consecutive days. While our neighbors can be hit or miss, they are, by and large, friendly during zucchini-share season and especially so during fruit cake-share season. Utahns have a pretty decent life expectancy, even though we consume grand amounts of beef fat and sweet sodas.

On the other hand, we are also—I’m looking for the right word here—“blessed,” say some, to be represented by six members of Congress who vote in unison on nearly all matters that affect our state. That they each share the same religion furthers the belief of some Utahns that Utah is even more special than, say, either of the Dakotas. It’s a Utah thing to hang a hat upon even the smallest matter of prideful arrogance. Being better than a Dakota is an example of a prideful thing. Who doesn’t punch down on North and South Dakota? Even West Virginia punches down on the Dakotas.

Both Dakotas combined have six members of Congress, same as Utah. Unlike Utah, two of those six are Catholic and two are evangelical Christians. One is a Lutheran

and the final one just goes to church somewhere. Outside of them all being Christian, that seems pretty diverse to me. Is that any way to represent a body of people, by not spawning from a single religion font? That sure flies in the face of the Utah way, where electing a non-LDS person to the U.S. Congress is as rare as an authentic Mark Hofmann signature.

But, we don’t move. We stay. I guess that’s due to those of us who are not LDS, thinking it’s some kind of honor badge to hold out for better things. Maybe we think things will change, and in some ways, life in Utah is changing. On the surface, Utah looks more diverse than when I was young, and I can attest that there are more drinkers in Utah than there used to be. That’s a good thing. The trouble is, no matter how diverse Utah becomes, our zany gerrymandered districts promise landslide elections to dumb grifters like Rep. Chris Stewart. Did you see what he had to say about the passage of the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package?

He called it the “Pelosi Payoff,” saying, it was her “paying her friends, paying her voters.” Don’t tell Chris, but Speaker Pelosi represents the same number of voters—approximately 341,000—as he. He’s never figured out that it’s possible to rise in political power without shining shoes.

Indeed, all of Utah’s representatives voted against the coronavirus package. Rep. John Curtis called it the “largest government redistribution of wealth in history.” History covers a lot of ground, so let’s assume Curtis meant in U.S. history. He might recall then a greater wealth redistribution occurred with the Reagan tax cuts. Sen. Romney voted against the bill saying, “states that don’t need [corona funding], shouldn’t get it.” Even Utah, he said. Never mind that frugal Utah underspends in nearly all categories. Yeah, we need the funds, Mitt!

The prize goes to Sen. Mike Lee, though. He is against debt, except when he isn’t. While he’s been a senator, our national debt has doubled, with most of that—$7 trillion— occurring during the past four years of Trump. It was OK in those times to give money via tax breaks and benefits to the upper echelons of U.S. citizenry, but passing funds to all Americans is a bridge too far for spoiled kids like Mike Lee. He’s also a religious phony. Anyone who so carelessly casts out his religious oyster shells, and embarrasses his own faith, is probably a fake. He did it in the election run-up comparing Donald Trump to Captain Moroni of the Book of Mormon, and he did it again this week in explaining his vote against the relief package. Here’s what he said: “Gird up your loins, fresh courage take. Our God will never us forsake. And soon we’ll have this tale to tell. All is well! All is well!” Huh??

That’s a verse from a particular LDS hymn I’ve never sung. But why? Is that a coded message? If so, he needs to go to his secret place and talk in code because that makes no sense at all. It may to some Mormons. It may in the context of the entire hymn. But as a reason to vote against people who need financial relief? Lee is crazy, and he needs to open up his music catalog. Knowing he won’t, I will.

Here, try this one, Mike—taken from the No. 1 hit on the day you were born in 1971: “Gold Coast slave ship bound for the cotton fields. Sold in a market down in New Orleans. Scared old slaver knows he’s doing alright. Hear him whip the woman just around midnight. Brown sugar, how come you taste so good.

Brown sugar, just like a good girl should.”

MISS: In Lawmakers We Trust

If you read The Salt Lake Tribune’s Sunday editorial, you’ll understand why Utah remains grounded in a withering past. It has to do with secrecy and entitlement. Legislators subscribe to the playbook that says you—the huddled masses—are smart enough to have elected them to office but too stupid to know what you want or need—or how to get it. This is why they are shutting you out. They have just approved the Colorado River Authority because “it’s our water,” whines Sen. Don Ipson, R-St. George. But you shouldn’t worry your little head about what the authority is really up to—just like you shouldn’t worry about water conservation, that “fake” climate change, or whether any insider will be getting paid off under the table. Just trust them. And remember, that coal in your stocking this year is from Utah.

It’s Women’s History Month, a time filled with historical examples of how women have been hurt or killed when they spoke up against authority. Times have changed, although women still face major obstacles.

There is no better example from the women’s movement than the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. There’s a tiny glimmer of hope for equality, and it came in the form on a rainbow-lighted “Y” at BYU. Of course, the school quickly denounced it as unapproved. And yet, the governor halted moves to ban transgender girls from women’s sports and another to restrict young people from gender-affirming health care, KUER 90.1 FM reported.

These are small steps in an otherwise homophobic state where a county councilman claimed the “left” wants everyone to be bisexual and promiscuous. Our beloved U.S. Sen. Mike Lee, in trying to cloak his anti-LGBTQ bias, is proposing a “First Amendment” bill to exempt religious organizations from same-sex adoptions, CNN reports.

“What an individual or organization believes about the traditional definition of marriage is not—and should never be—a part of the government’s decision-making process when distributing licenses, accreditations or grants,” Lee said in a statement. Did he even hear what he said?

Voters being too dumb was kind of a theme in this year’s Legislature. Lawmakers made it harder to get an initiative on the ballot and easier to keep the GOP insider-game locked. Heck, they don’t even want the governor to exercise emergency powers. They’re just way pissed that citizens passed medical marijuana, a redistricting commission and Medicaid expansion—oh, and then there’s the governor’s mask mandate. But they showed their true colors when they killed a bill to give 16and 17-year-old students a vote in local school board elections. It’s because they’re not ready for the “heavy lift” of voting, Rep. Steve Christiansen, RWest Jordan, told The Salt Lake Tribune.

He points to 70 percent of adults passing the citizenship test. Maybe that’s a reason to require real civics education for adults and to allow students to get started on their civic duty now.

While many cities’ comedy venues remained closed, plenty of comedians turned to virtual shows or other online ways of staying connected with their audiences. Shuler King put his phone’s camera on his dashboard and became a prolific creator of YouTube video updates, commenting on ridiculous things he discovered on the Internet. And it’s impossible to keep from laughing out loud when King lays into a guy using a self-serve car wash’s powersprayers to levitate himself into the air—not necessarily because it was dumb, but because “now I got to do it, because it looks fun as hell.”

It’s not surprising to find that King has an oddball sense of humor, since the South Carolina native proudly touts that when he’s not on the road, he works as a licensed funeral director and embalmer at his family funeral business. “My family does not respect my achievements,” King said recently while promoting a gig. “I just came back from Japan, I was feeling on top of the world. My dad said, ‘You did Japan, huh? … That’s good … go take the trash out.’” Maybe they

did appreciate the viral fame King achieved in 2016, when he responded to the controversy over Melania Trump stealing a speech from Michelle Obama by taking it upon himself to craft a “new” speech for the soon-to-be First Lady.

Southern Utah University virtual theater: The Matchmaker

Director Pedro Kos explores the fascinating story of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Roman Catholic nuns in a Los Angeles-based convent who challenged Church authorities in the 1960s in the wake of the revolutionary Vatican II council. The screening takes place March 23, 7 p.m., and also features a post-film Q&A with the director. March 24 brings Picture a Scientist, from directors Ian Cheney and Sharon Shattuck, exploring the long history of under-representation of women—and particularly women of color—in STEM occupations.

As Plan-B Theatre Company is already showing with its current season (see City Weekly, Feb. 25), there are creative ways for theater artists to use a strictly auditory approach to storytelling while in-person performances remain limited by the pandemic.

The theater department at Southern Utah University takes a page from Plan-B’s long history of radio drama by presenting Thornton Wilder’s 1954 play The Matchmaker on March 13, 16 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. virtually at go.suu.edu/virtualtheater, with the March 13 performance airing live on SUU’s Thunder 91.1 FM. Pre-registration at least 15 minutes before showtimes is recommended.

The narrative follows Dolly Levi, a widow who brokers marriages in turn-of-the-20thcentury Yonkers, New York. Among her clients is local merchant Horace Vandergelder, who has contracted Dolly to find him a wife, except that Dolly has the idea that she herself would make the perfect match for him.

Utah Film Center Women’s History Month Programming Throughout March, many organizations will be recognizing remarkable women as part of Women’s History Month programming. Utah Film Center offers its contribution to this rich offering of opportunities with several documentary films celebrating pioneers and risktakers, along with a chance to talk with the filmmakers.

The next selection in the month-long series is Ruth – Justice Ginsberg In Her Own Words, profiling the life and work of the groundbreaking attorney, civil-rights advocate and Supreme Court justice. Academy Awardwinning director Freida Lee Mock focuses, as the title might suggest, on the public words of Justice Ginsberg, including lectures, interviews, visits with schoolchildren and her brilliant SCOTUS decisions. The live-stream screening takes place Tuesday, March 16 at 7 p.m., followed by a live Q&A with Mock, and a short on-demand viewing window through March 17.

But they also worked in conjunction with Granary Art Center on the in-real-life art experience of Lawn Gnomes, inviting people to drive around to various locations where local artists had created installations for their front yards. As “screen fatigue” set in, it was wonderful to have an opportunity to be out in the world connecting directly with art. utahmoca.org Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company and Repertory Dance Theatre’s Double Take: Despite respectively being vital parts of the Utah arts scene for decades, Ririe-Woodbury and RDT had never worked together. SONDERimmersive’s 2020 drive-in production of Through Yonder Window pandemic provided the nudge that turned into a joint season-premiere back in September, as the companies drew on the experience of recording their work for the Rose Exposed showcase. e all remember where we were, and how it felt, when the COVID-19 pandemic truly hit home a year ago this week. Businesses and schools shut down, toilet paper became more precious than gold and we became very aware of how much we did or didn’t like the people we were stuck in our homes with.

Arts organizations in particular were forced to scramble in a world where isolation was the norm; how could you adjust a paradigm built on shared experiences of creative work? But as hard as the past 12 months have been on so many such organizations, they’ve also shown remarkable resilience and creativity in figuring out how to continue their missions and connect with their communities. Hitting the High Notes

Salt Lake’s First Unitarian Church prepares to say farewell to its jazz-loving minister. f, during the past 34 years, you’ve attended a rally for a liberal or environmental cause or publicly protested the more egregious policies of local and national conservative politicians ranging from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump, you’ve probably seen his face in the crowd. More likely you saw it out front reasoning and pleading for a humanistic approach to public life. The visage belongs to Tom Goldsmith, senior minister of the First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City. But you won’t be seeing it as much after May 16.

UU Utah’s Roots

After shorter ministerial gigs in Boston, Reverend Tom arrived in Salt Lake in 1987 to take the helm of Salt Lake’s First Unitarian church when it was still four years shy of its centennial celebration. A Unitarian congregation had been founded 96 years earlier when a minister from Colorado, Thomas Eliot, responded to the call of Salt Lake’s aspiring Unitarians to come and kick things off here in the heart of Zion.

Judy Miller, whose deceased mother, Lorille, wrote a history of SLCUU (aka First Unitarian), summarizes the congregation’s initial interaction with other churches.

UU. Unitarianism and Universalism have traditionally been considered “Christian” to some degree, but UU’s current iteration is now less focused on mystical teachings, dogma or an afterlife reward.

Instead, the church sees its main sacrament as creating a more just and compassionate world. Along the way, Unitarian philosophy has attracted such forward thinkers as Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Charles Dickens, Clara Barton, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Susan B. Anthony, Herman Melville, Buckminster Fuller, Beatrix Potter, Kurt Vonnegut, Ray Bradbury, Pete Seeger, and five U.S. presidents including Thomas Jefferson.

Unitarianism also attracted Goldsmith’s German-born, immigrant, Jewish parents who lost their families in the Holocaust.

Growing up in New York City, young Tom rubbed shoulders with UU-members who were comedy writers in early TV (possibly the source of his gift for ironic humor) or were music industry figures, which is how

After a succession of 12 ministers and the whole church taking several of what historical accounts described as ‘sabbaticals or meeting in many different places, the current building was constructed in 1927. There, it finally started to flourish.’”

Miller went on to quote from the church’s history, describing the initial skeptical response by local faith leaders: “Being the center for liberal, non-doctrinal thought and a forum for unpopular ideas, in 1890, an LDS apostle described the Unitarian minister as ‘a smooth and dangerous opponent of our church.’ In 1902, a Catholic writer wrote in The Intermountain Catholic, ‘Unitarian views are the foulest blasphemy.’ But since the 1920s, there have mostly been good, working, ecumenical relationships with most churches, mosques and synagogues.”

Goldsmith offers specifics about the early bones of contention. “The church’s first minister, Harvard-educated David Utter, introduced the hot theological topic of biblical criticism,” he says. “It caused quite a stir all over town but was never perceived as a real threat to the predominant religion. There was not much social justice work at the beginning—mostly an oppor-

At 72, Goldsmith is surrendering the pulpit and moving into active retirement. He leaves behind a legacy that’s affected not only his congregants but the community at large. For example, with his congregation’s financial and moral support, Reverend Tom launched the Jazz Vespers series of Sunday-evening free concerts at the church located at 1300 East at 600 South, gatherings which he personally emceed with timely humor, social commentary and musical insight. For more than 30 years, these always-packed events featured the area’s top jazz musicians and up-and-comers. Some might argue they were among the most highly regarded jazz performances in the Mountain West (they can still be viewed on YouTube).

The Unitarian faith began in 16th-century Transylvania, spread during the Age of Enlightenment to Western Europe and then arrived in the U.S.—first in New England. After merging with Universalism in 1961, it commonly became abbreviated as

Given Unitarianism’s open acceptance of people of all orientations and its lack of puritanical mores around private, personal behaviors (i.e., sex and the like), Goldsmith discloses that one of his mentors was, he says, “the famous porn writer, Ted Mark.

Ted was my high school Sunday school teacher for four years and took credit for my eventual enrollment at Harvard Divinity School.” Goldsmith reveals that Mark was one of several unusual UU characters who shaped his life but quips, “I try not to think about it.”

tunity for liberal thinkers to discuss the issues of the day often wrapped around theology.

Evolution was still an urgent matter to be discussed, and liberals felt uplifted in having a place to gather freely.”

The congregation’s SLC home featuring Georgian classical architectural lines has expanded to more than twice its original size with additions in 1983 and 2010. Thirteen years ago, 125 solar panels were installed on the roof.

Today’s Utah UU members remain politically liberal, but despite their strong backing of progressive causes and minority rights, the local, regular attendees skew older and white, tending toward the professional and college educated—myself included. The Salt Lake congregation serves around 600 people and consists primarily of transplants to Utah and disaffected, former Mormons.

The Tom and David Show

Since there’s no requirement for adherence to a strict canon of theological beliefs, congregants range from atheists and agnostics to fans of Jesus, pantheists and a few believers in other deities. Working to make society function better through individual or collective positive action is how UUs “get the spirit.”

First Unitarian’s assistant minister, Monica Dobbins, relocated with her husband and daughter from Birmingham, Alabama, with a master’s in divinity studies from Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago. She hails from a Christian background and incorporates the best of what she found there into her sermons, homilies and pastoral work.

She observes that the six UU congregations in this state vary to some degree, but this is how she sees them generally in comparison to Mormonism: “Unitarian Universalism provides a counterpoint to the dominant religious culture. ‘Covenant,’ for UUs, represents not a binding set of beliefs or a commitment to God, but rather a set of promises made among human beings on how they will treat one another in community.”

She says that UUs “consider science and reason to be equal in religious value to the inspiration of the world’s religions.” The church congregations cultivate a “pluralism of belief,” she says, that lends itself to “a free and responsible search for truth and meaning.”

As such, Dobbins notes, “Exploration and curiosity are prized in this faith, and a deep commitment to justice, carried out by humans who are not content to wait on God’s timing.”

Darlene Thayne of Bountiful is representative of UUs who were raised Mormon but sought a more liberal approach to religion. After having checked all the right LDS boxes including temple marriage, Thayne’s sense of belonging started to become unsettled with the purge of Mormon intellectuals in 1993. She says she found herself “drowning in a sea of consensus” as she attempted to deal with anti-science, racist and sexist attitudes. She reports, “I found a website where I could answer questions about my beliefs. It said that I was more than 90% Unitarian, so I checked out the church and was blown away by the inclusivity, dynamic sermons and conversations, service to others, open-mindedness and allegiance to a ‘free and responsible search for truth and meaning’—which was and is exactly what I needed in life.”

Dylan Zwick completed a Ph.D. in math at the University of Utah in 2014 and later was off to Seattle to launch a high-tech start up. When his company’s employees started working from home during COVID, he seized the opportunity to return to the Wasatch Front where his wife, María del Mar González, had been able to secure an art history faculty position at Weber State. He reflects on why UU is a good fit for his progressive social and political views: “I’m something of an abnormality in that I’m a third-generation member of the church. When I was a kid, it was my grandparents’ church, and then my mother’s church, and now it’s mine. What has kept me in is that it’s a place where I can be involved in my community with my family, and it’s a home base for my activism. My church is an expression of my values, both in what we do at church and in what my church does in the world—and I love the people there.”

John Rasmuson, an occasional City Weekly contributor, has also found a home at SLCUU, reflects on his journey into liberal religion, “My wife and I moved to Utah after 20 years in Massachusetts. With our New England credentials, the Unitarian Church on 1300 East had curb appeal, so we showed up one Sunday morning and found ourselves in a sunny space, plied with beautiful music and a sermon channeling Ralph Waldo Emerson.

We were soon fans of what was known as ‘The Tom and David Show.’ Like David Letterman and Paul Shaffer, minister Tom Goldsmith sermonized and music director David Owens played complementary interludes on a grand piano.”

Acts of Activism

Contemplating the approaching close of his tenure and asked to list his accomplishments, Reverend Tom responds, “It’s impossible to distinguish between my accomplishments and the progressive mindset of the congregation. They were proud of new projects I brought to the table, and I was proud of their support and follow-through.”

Those projects include teaming with the ACLU which represented the church as chief plaintiff in the Main Street lawsuit during which Goldsmith worked with civic and college groups to publicly articulate that the suit was not about religion but rested on constitutional grounds. He sarcastically observes, “That’s before we had Mike Lee to explain to us what the Constitution really means.”

Goldsmith has also led his congregation’s activism on several environmental fronts such as defending church member Tim DeChristopher after the then-student’s attempt to monkey-wrench the G.W. Bush administration’s granting of oil and gas leases in environmentally sensitive areas. The church supported DeChristopher throughout his trial and two years’ imprisonment.

The congregation’s 2017 vote to become one of the 50 or so immigrant sanctuaries in the nation makes Goldsmith extremely proud. He considers sheltering from deportation Honduran asylum-seekers Vicky Chavez and her two daughters for three years and counting one of its proudest achievements.

Joan Gregory is a University of Utah librarian who leads the church’s Social Justice Ministry—one of more than 20 ministries and committees functioning within the congregation. Gregory reports that of all the volunteers who run errands for Chavez, stand

24/7 watch at the church for security and support, tutor her older daughter, or provide on-site dental and doctor visits, about 70% are UU members with the rest of a corps of 150 coming from the community at large.

While Chavez is profoundly grateful for the shelter and support she receives, COVID has compounded her feelings of isolation that one would normally experience from being confined to a single building for several years—even if it is a large one. In conformity with the Unitarian Universalist Association’s national guidelines, all SLCUU in-building meetings have been suspended since March 2020, meaning that the broader network Chavez interacted with through the daily comings and goings of church members has largely ceased. While she continues to see a handful of core volunteers, contracting COVID and being hospitalized would mean leaving the safety of sanctuary, so she no longer receives visits from anyone else. Facebook and interacting electronically with others in church sanctuaries across the country are her connections with the outside world. Besides raising her daughters, she also maintains sanity through hobbies such as artistic crocheting. She’s producing Bernie Sanders Inauguration Mittens and Mask Dolls and donates them to the church for fundraising. It also helps take her mind off waiting for the Biden administration and Congress to enact immigration reform that will hopefully be more friendly to her appeal for permanent immigration status.

The church’s shutdown has also meant that a private preschool that used the church for more than 50 years no longer operates there. Alcoholic Anonymous and other organizations including dance and musical groups that had enjoyed church space are also on hiatus.

SLCUU has continued its own operations with online sermons that are posted to the church’s website each Saturday afternoon.

Those are followed on Sunday by an 11 a.m. Zoom “coffee hour” in which congregants and visitors are able to interact together before breaking out into smaller chat groups.

Hope Springs Eternal

As he considers what’s going on in the world, Goldsmith’s views alternate between idealistic and realistic. On one hand, he says “Every person deserves the dignity of health care, education and opportunities to fulfill their potential. The sanctity of the natural world is being trampled to satisfy immediate greed.”

But then he notes, “Old Testaments prophets railed against the glaring inequities in society. Jesus, too, had a few things to say about the need for greater compassion to make the world more just. Religion, if it will take itself seriously, must open the human heart beyond its own desires.”

When asked how optimistic he is for such shifts to be fully realized, Goldsmith says, “We’ve not gotten it quite right yet, but one of the roles of a minister is to discard his or her own cynicism and lead a congregation with hope. There are enough silver linings in our many disasters for me to hold onto with all my might.”

Citing an example, this minister recollects, “When same-sex marriages became legal, I wound up officiating a great many. About 20 homophobes appeared outside one morning carrying signs that described me in terrible ways. They made a lot of noise hoping to upset our worship service, but I realized halfway through that it had become completely quiet and thought they must have gone home. Instead, our high school-age Sunday School class prepared hot chocolate for them, sat down with them outside, and had a civilized conversation. It did the heart good.”

As Salt Lake’s UU community says goodbye to its minister for over a third of a century and searches for his replacement, Goldsmith and his abstract landscape artist wife, Mary Tull, plan post-COVID travel to see their five children and five granddaughters in Portland, Oregon; Marin County, California; and Phoenix, attending Zen retreats along the way. Creative writing is also a deferred interest as are adding to his vintage Blue Note collection of jazz vinyl records and helping to recruit donors for a scholarship being created in his name for refugees students at Salt Lake Community College facilitated by the International Rescue Committee.

Old habits die hard, however, and after his last official climb into the pulpit on May 16, Reverend Tom worries he’ll get up on Sunday mornings and try to preach a sermon to Mary. If so, it will be for a much smaller but still a very politically and socially engaged congregation—one very much in the UU spirit. UU rallies in support of Vicky Chavez and her children Unlike many religions, the Unitarian Universalist church is directed from the bottom up. Decisions such as calling a new minister or committing to major projects require a two-thirds majority vote by its members; full consensus is always the goal.

In 2008, the Salt Lake City UU congregation contemplated becoming a short-term sanctuary for asylum seekers but needed more information to proceed. After a lengthy study of a church’s role in providing sanctuary in this country, in January 2018, SLCUU learned of the plight of Vicky Chavez and her daughters who were facing deportation after being denied permanent immigration status by the Trump administration.

The congregation voted to convert classroom space into a living area for as long as the family needed it and bear the expense of installing a high-tech security system. The U.S. government, like others in the Western world, has historically not raided churches that provide sanctuary.

On Sunday, March 7, SLCUU voted over Zoom to further support Chavez in her challenge of the constitutionality of the large fines that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has subsequently levied against her for ignoring self-deportation orders.

The initial fine was $435,832 but was lowered to just under $60,000 due to ICE’s failure to follow proper procedures. Chavez continues her appeals in hopes that deportation orders will be lifted and her asylum granted and then wants to be able to start life afresh without the onerous burden of a large fine.

The church voted overwhelmingly to support her in that quest.

hough Utah was a bit late in the game regarding sushi burritos, we were quick to adopt them once the trend made its way to our boundaries. Now that this hybridization of two unlikely takeout superstars has been fully incorporated into our local dining scene, I think it’s time to recognize the sushi burrito as one of the greatest achievements in the last decade of American culinary history. I remember seeing the promotional signs for this restaurant going up after Guzzi’s Burgers closed, and marveling at the idea’s audacity. It’s one of those notions that is so good yet so simple, you wonder why no one had thought of it before—what is sushi, if not a burrito sliced into smaller pieces?

waiian snack lends itself nicely to a sushi roll—but this one stands out because of Nagoya’s spicy mayo. With the option to get most sushi burritos in their stellar selection deep fried and a vast menu of additional entrees at their disposal, Nagoya is one of the more versatile sushi burrito joints in town.

SM Sushi ( 3949 S. Highland Drive, 801849-0647, smsushi.com): A bit of an upstart in the Utah sushi burrito scene, SM Sushi balances its menu with traditional and burrito-style rolls. It’s got one of the best fishless sushi burritos around with the New York Burrito ($11.99), which combines fried chicken and grilled beef with mayo, avocado, cucumber and asparagus. It’s a satisfying combination of Latin American flavors; the chicken and beef combined with mayo and avocado veer close to arepa territory.

It’s a leap from the sushi burrito formula, but delicious nonetheless.

If you’re a fan of spicy sushi, the Kabuki ($11.99) has your number. Not only does it combine the holy trinity of sushi proteins— tuna, salmon and yellowtail—it’s rolled up with jalapeño peppers, sriracha and spicy mayo. The avocado and mayo cool things off a bit once you’re halfway through, but this one is designed to set fire to your mouth.

For me, SM Sushi’s mainstay will forever remain the Rock ‘N Roll ($11.99), which is a combo of eel, tuna and tempura shrimp with tobiko and cucumber. It’s a classic arrangement of traditional sushi flavors, and SM Sushi preps it just right every time.

All three of these restaurants exemplify the cultural significance of the sushi burrito along the Wasatch Front, and I’m grateful for places that let me satisfy my sushi cravings with a takeout mindset. If you’ve never experienced the fresh-tasting joy that comes from pounding a gigantic sushi burrito, it’s time to roll out to one of these local favorites. CW

Sushi Burrito’s menu includes combinations that any sushi fan will want to dig into, but my personal favorite is the citrus ($9.49). It’s a massive roll filled with salmon and crab meat along with avocado, cucumber, eel sauce, ponzu sauce and sliced lemon. I’ve always been enamored with the vibrant flavor that thin slices of lemon bring to a sushi roll, and this one doubles down on those flavors with the ponzu sauce. Every bite of this beast offers the acidity of fresh lemon and vinegary ponzu, which enhances the flavors of the salmon and crab therein.

When I’m after something a bit less subtle, the Salmon Bomb ($9.49) is usually where I land. It swaps out raw salmon for grilled, and adds crispy bacon to the mix.

Cabbage, lettuce and carrots add to the crunchy texture, and the eel sauce spikes the whole affair with a nice, unctuous dose of concentrated sweet and salty flavor.

Nagoya Hibachi and Sushi Burrito (9105 S. Redwood Road, 801-565-0909, nagoyautah.com): Sushi burritos only occupy one section of this West Jordan restaurant’s menu—a stacked selection of traditional sushi rolls, poke bowls and Chinese American favorites is also available—but they’re by no means a second thought.

The monarch of Nagoya’s sushi burrito kingdom is simply known as the Monster ($12.99), a name that gives you a sense of what you’re getting into once you’ve placed your order. It’s stuffed with lobster, crab, tobiko, cucumber, lettuce, sliced lemon— yass queen—eel sauce and spicy mayo. It’s got a decent amount of lobster inside, and the spicy mayo adds just the right amount of kick. If you haven’t tried this one already, make sure it’s on your list.

While more akin to Spam musubi than sushi, Nagoya’s Maui burrito ($9.79) is another excellent entry on the menu. It’s something most sushi burrito places offer—perhaps because the traditional Ha-

tation on the style—an ale that is smooth, does not foam upon the palate, and flows nicely along the tongue. This is a Belgianstyle that few brewers in our market have attempted, and this one fits the bill nicely.

SaltFire - Serafina: Spontaneously fermented beers aren’t exclusive to Belgium, but those clever monks and nuns pretty much perfected the techniques over the centuries. Now, we reap the benefits of their devotion. Saltfire’s head brewer Mike Dymowski went with a hybrid interpretation on the wild ale, adding Syrah grapes to the mix creating a half-beer/half-wine, all fermented with Utah air. The glass is as clear as a Coke bottle, allowing the deep purple beer to entice you before it’s even poured.

There’s not much in the way of foam once in the glass. You will get loads of funky brett character, though, with balsamic fruits and juicy citrus (not sure if these are from hops or yeast). Some jammy dark fruits from the Syrah emerge, plus hints of light oak (probably from some blended foeder beer), a touch of vanilla, leather and musty attic.

The taste has spicier oak, peppery farmhouse yeast, and dirty balsamic vinegar flavors present, particularly in the finish. It’s sweeter than the aroma, with more earth and bitter citrus peel present. I don’t think I would have guessed this was a beer from the start; the 51/49 ratio of beer to wine is style-bending. The finish has some light lemony sourness, musty brett, and wet oak, which makes things a tad overwhelming.

Still, the result is quite complex and rich.

Medium body, with plenty of tannins present, and the warming quality of the 8.0 percent alcohol suggests that this picked up some heat from the foeder. There’s some light residual stickiness that suggests the funky yeast didn’t manage to scrub all the sugars.

Overall: This is an exciting and complex beer. Mark my words, you’ll soon start to see more brews like this, as local brewers yearn to push the boundaries of what beer can be. Until the other hybrids arrive, you’ll just have to enjoy this one.

Serafina is a pretty small-batch offering, but the market isn’t huge for funky sour beers, so you may still be in luck. Eternal Pursuit has a much larger batch size, and will find its way into your fridge easily. As always, cheers! CW

dare say that Belgian-style ales are the most difficult beers for people to get to know. There’s something primal yet refined in these beers that breaks all of the molds. Two local breweries have crafted two very different examples that show how interpretation and inspiration can go hand in hand.

Level Crossing - Eternal Pursuit: This beer pays tribute to the Belgian strong styles, and features Level Crossing head brewer Chris Detrick on the label, striking his best New Testament monk pose.

The Belgian-style ale Detrick decided to emulate is Dark Strong Ale—and the name pretty much says it all. It pours a medium to dark mahogany brown with red highlights. Thin off-white foam dissipates slowly to patches and a ring around the glass.

The aroma features that distinctive sweet, bubblegum and clove aroma, with notes of cocoa and brown sugar sweetness. Notable bitterness from European hops rounds out the nose.

The beginning of this interesting-tasting beer features a good dose of caramel that possesses some nice vine qualities. These flavors transition into a more bready malt flavor. Mid-palate is yeast driven, driving the clove and coriander spices that can only come in Belgian yeast strains. Back of palate notes an assertive European hop bitterness as the yeast spices dwindle. Aftertaste is of sweet brown sugar, affixed to a fairly strong European hop bitterness with a slight herbal character. This 8.0 percent beer is medium to medium-heavy in body, with carbonation of medium-low intensity.

A quick shift to virtual kept students connected to musical mentors.

chools of all kinds have struggled with the many “hows” of this past pandemic year, and that doesn’t exclude organizations like SpyHop, Salt Lake City’s longtime music, film, audio and design center for youth. Director of Marketing and Community Relations Larissa Trout says, though, that the local non-profit quickly developed a beneficial system of response—one that hinges on simply showing up for their students, and building an environment in which students can show up, too.

“Not speaking for all of them, but I think our students across the board, they need us,” says Trout, just shy of the March 13 anniversary that she recalls as being the last day at SpyHop-as-it-was. “The message has always been there that young people need a positive adult role model. They need mentors, they need somebody in their corner who they can be their true selves with, and a pandemic doesn’t change that. … They continue to show up with us.”

One thing the students expressed to their SpyHop mentors was their gratitude that SpyHop, too, had shown up in the immediate aftermath of last year’s initial shut-downs. Part of their speedy response was owed to a January 2020 warning from a Singaporebased health worker friend of Executive Director Kasandra VerBrugghen.

“She had let Kasandra know, ‘You need to be paying attention, this is coming,’” Trout says. “It gave us enough of a heads-up that, mentally at least, we had kind of shifted to a place where we were like, ‘Does everybody have a computer they can take home? Can we let all of our kids have all the gear that we’d normally let them use?’” Come March, SpyHop was able to transition all in-person programming to online formats, swiftly re-connecting students with their mentors via Zoom—but more importantly, giving them a place to talk to their friends, to “just deal.”

Within a week, they launched several new program models with online formatting in mind, including their Rewired Workshop and its virtual programming, Art Shop’s on-demand tutorials and Beat Challenge. “There was no question, we just did it,” says Trout. Planned events, like the capstone showcase for their Woodshedding class (which teaches songwriting skills) had to be reworked to digital, which was what led to their first Twitch stream. A pieced-together collection of video performances filmed by the students, often on their own smartphones, Trout says with a chuckle that it was “very endearing because it was very authentic.”

It was also such a success that they turned to it again for the album release of their Musicology students. Led by local musician Cathy Foy, the class was one of the hardest to adopt to the pandemic, since it relies on bringing students together to learn to be in a band. However, last year’s band, The Blue Collar Lovers, were eventually able to resume work once summer 2020 came around,

SpyHop’s New Kahlert Youth Media Arts Center releasing their album Mean Machine and celebrating it on a Twitch stream that was viewed by more than 100 people. “We did a really great video piece introducing the students and Cathy, we played their music. We have all kinds of music come out of our programs … and this one was so authentic [because of] these students and their voices and what they had to say. And it wasn’t as ‘Debbie Downer’ as what I thought it could have been.”

All of this access—to classes, to gear and to community—has been, Trout thinks, a boon to the kids who are still with SpyHop. “Kids are resilient, but they’ve been impacted deeply. We see that, we see it in their attitudes, the work they’re creating,” she says.

“I’m glad they’re with us, because I’m less worried about them. I worry more about kids who don’t have access to what we’re doing, all those students we know are falling through the cracks.”

SpyHop has been trying to fill those cracks by loaning gear and tech to students for free, as well as making their brand-new building at 900 S. 200 West a donation center for their Tech Liberation project, in which they take used laptops and computers and refurbish them for students to keep. The stunning new SpyHop building has also been used for student spotlights. Making use of windows that face out onto the sidewalk on 900 South, this winter they began projecting students’ visual work out onto the glass from inside, accompanied by audio installed on the second floor.

The programming returns on March 15, screening weeknights at dusk to 8 p.m. until March 26. And excitingly, the building will open for real people soon—their rooftop venue will soon become active as a new event space, and they’re opening up to in-person classes thanks to the space’s handy HVAC system.

“June 7 will be the first day that we have students in our building,” says Trout. “We are more than ready to overcome the next hurtles with COVID, and recognize that we need to be open, it is time, we can do it safely and we can invite students into our space and utilize our incredible resources.”

It seems these days that artists rarely choose a name that reflects the kind of music they make; too many ironic names abound. But the name Pitcher Plant—the title of the solo project by local Ysa Pitman—is perfect for this surrealist autoharpist. Her recent burst of three singles, released as Ghost of the Weed Garden, is a lovely little preview of what this artist has in store, hopefully by way of a full EP release later this year. Fans of Joanna Newsom or early St. Vincent will find some similarities here, in part due to the fanciful and beguiling sounds built by the autoharp that Pitman plays, but also by way of whimsical appearances by violin, horn and cornet. However, Pitman veers away from any of the tepid strangeness of the two aforementioned artists, and into a more brash, plain-delivered poetry—such as when on “Pit,” she shrieks “going into the pit / spit it out, let it in!” With some parts arranged by Provo producer and multi-instrumentalist Bly Wallentine, the songs smack of a certain kind of Utah weirdo folk pop, likely in part thanks to Wallentine’s Studio Studio Dada fingerprints.

But it’s also due in part to a small legacy of classically-inspired experimental artists here who all seem to collaborate and inform each other. Fans of locals like Sen Wisher or Little Moon will hear what I’m referring to. It also might just be because the autoharp sounds warm and familiar, modest and approachable, as much as it also sounds futuristic-medieval.

These fantastically woven tones and forms perfectly match the low and even voice of Pitman on the third and final single, “Well Wisher.” On that song, it really does help evoke the imagery of the self-aware lyrics “I’ll be your well-wisher from afar / too much pressure for you to be what I want for me / I was aware of the score from the start / you got a castle round your head, round your heart / it’s who you are.” On the title-track, Pitman plays with language, singing “tailored maid, tailor-made / a tolled bell, a told belle,” and evokes the project’s name in lyrics like “here comes the ghost of the weed garden / pitcher’s broken and the well is dry.”

Nicky V A releases Slow Death! In the Desert

This here is the first of two Old West albums up for review this week, but the two couldn’t be more different. Local Nick Anderson, who runs the local experimental and found cassette label, Far Out Cassette Club—and who we profiled last year in association with his distinct tape-obsessed efforts—also makes music of his own as Nicky V A. His previous release available on faroutcassetteclub.bandcamp.com is from 2019, a lo-fi recording that leans into minimal, slowly-delivered synth parts that evoke images of lonely, distant parts of space. Meditative, maybe crafted with tripping in mind, it couldn’t be farther flung from this new release, Slow Death! In the Desert. The title is a delight—it seems to be a reference to the meme that was long ago generated from the absurdist band Panic! At the Disco—and also immediately marks it as an addition to the slightly ironic genre that I’m going to call here, for fun, nü-cowboy.

Local examples of this millennial obsession with all things shoot-’em-up include artists like Pony Logan, who last year released an album that combined hyperpop glitchiness with Y2K country music themes. One could argue that the country hubbub took off with queer indie artist Orville Peck, who has a song about men in Salt Lake City calling him “pretty.” Peck is present here in Slow Death! In the Desert, if only because, like him, Anderson really sticks to all the sonic traditions of “spaghetti Westerns,” with an opening track that’s all windchimes and the dry, arid whistling sound that calls up yellow imagery of a cracked landscape dotted with spent shotgun shells, the silhouette of a noble lone gunslinger in the distance. On the title track, Anderson sings lowly that slow death in the desert is all he knows: “out on the horizon, just a distance away / a pale horse is waiting / for when it’s my turn to pay.” Native American flute turns up, a cliché to impart the vastness of Anderson’s cowboy’s killing desert. Plaintive guitars amble throughout, though on closer “done failin,” they waver with a just-out-of-tune warping likely an intentional choice by the tape-glitch obsessed Anderson. On “2 buck chuck,” heartbreak is dealt with by getting “fucked up” on the cheap Trader Joe’s brand of wine, to deal with having put his foot in his mouth. While there are probably many reasons that the winking camp of nü-cowboy has taken off in the last year, albums like Slow Death!

In the Desert make one think that maybe we’re all just lonely cowboys wandering through this deathly desert of a pandemic—and that there’s a happy ending sunset waiting for us.

King Thurber Releases While Thinking of You

Live at the Eccles Presents RAIN! at Maverick Center

Folks, coming up this weekend is my second pandemic birthday, so I’m treating myself to talking about my very favorite song. It is a thorny song by a thorny band, the best example of seminal bad-boy rockers The Replacements, at their most poetic: “Can’t Hardly Wait.” Written by the grimy frontman Paul Westerburg, it’s my favorite for many reasons, but mostly because it shimmers with an eternal edginess, the kind you get from a nervous, forward-looking hope and the trembling uncertainty of youth. It’s also because the song has about a half dozen different versions, since Westerburg, though a talented songwriter, was a famous lyric-forgetter. Yet all of the different sets of lyrics (the original 1985 Tim recording, featuring Alex Chilton on backing vocals; the soul-torn acoustic on the deluxe version of Tim; the official, horns-assisted release from ‘87’s Pleased to Meet Me; and on and on) do find union. On the first version—alongside triumphant electric guitar that makes it my favorite interpretation—Westerburg raggedly promises to write someone a letter, and not to “blow the address again.” On the acoustic, he sings mysteriously instead that he’ll “be there in an hour / it’ll take at least two weeks there on foot.” On all versions, Jesus rides beside Westerburg, a disapproving shoulder angel in a drugs ‘n’ booze-filled tour van full of “ashtray floors, dirty clothes and filthy jokes.” And while sometimes it’s Jesus yelling “hurry up!” and asking if they haven’t had enough of “that stuff,” elsewhere, it’s Westerburg making the demand, howling that he has. At the time of the song’s writing, in 1985, the band was on the cusp of making it big, but kept violently, drunkenly, goofily self-sabotaging important gigs due to growing insecurities and fear of responsibility.

Here, the high highs and hungover lows of one of rock’s wiliest bands sound out as both a celebration and a lament. Whether it’s from the top of a “scummy water tower” or “home when I’m sleeping,” Westerburg’s climactic sentiment is always that he “can’t hardly wait”—to, I think, put the restlessness to rest, to pin down fulfilment. Westerburg sees it in “lights that flash through a crack in the drapes,” chases it “through a hole in the gate,” and with each lyrical shift, it’s clear that fulfilment and the pursuit of it are always changing. That such a truth gets carried along by a song catchily delivering a sound as daring, earnest, worried and changeable as The Replacements always were, is just a bonus.

The Eccles Theater and the Maverick Center are making a comeback together this spring, signaling the kind of optimistic move shared by many folks in the entertainment industry these days. While COVID is nowhere near gone, cases are down and many Utahns have since been vaccinated—though far from all, of course. And cover shows seem to be the order du jour, or more like the order of the past year. Smaller venue and booking company S&S this past year put on a series of cover shows with Beatles and Bowie focuses, to much success. For their part, the Maverick Center date will feature the touring tribute show Rain, featuring a band made up of mostly self-taught musicians, and two Beatles superfans who grew up on the stuff, a former ukulele luthier and a classically-trained jazz artist. All four of them dress the part in Sgt. Pepper-era garb, and have toured their show all over the world—one member, Steve Landes, was even part of the famed Beatles Broadway cover show Beatlemania.

The group had tour dates all over the country before the pandemic, all of which were canceled or postponed. Now, some of their 2021 postponed dates remain so, but not this upcoming local date at the Maverick Center. It’s a lucky break for fans of the Beatles, or just of spectacle, for this is sure to be an exciting show after a year of canceled opportunities to catch such arena acts. It is curious, though—of all the kinds of shows that seem to have popped back up or persisted in the last year, I’ve found myself writing about a lot of cover sets. What is it about the cover show that appeals to so many? The dependably familiar hits? Or the novelty of rock ‘n’ roll soft-drag? I don’t know the answer, but it’s a fascinating phenomenon, and one that maybe proves the persistent popularity of these classic acts even after their own prime, even during a pandemic. Song of the Week: “Can’t Hardly Wait,” by The Replacements

Our second country album this week is a touch more traditional.

Local Utah folk artist King Thurber defines his recently-released While Thinking of You as a “quiet album of mandolin and guitar,” and it certainly is that. But with its lineup of original songs and covers of well-known songs, it’s lively, too. The March 1 release is the kind of humble folk that sounds like the West, or some version of it you can often find tinkling from an open door or three on some thin street of one of the West’s many old, preserved boom towns.

“The Wildest Horse” is a lonesome cowboy ballad about love’s wandering ways, delivered by Thurber in a modest, earnest and only slightly weary voice. At the end of the album, the song is revisited in a Nashville-ified reprise assisted by local Jesse Thurgood—and that time around, Thurber’s voice soars a little stronger, while mandolin warbles distinctly behind him like a friendly bird. Thurber’s true-blue Western Man troubadour-isms continue on songs like the romantic title track, which gathers into sweeping roses-for-the ears, thanks to a violin assist from Utah-associated contemporary folk legend Kate MacLeod. She also features on some of the other instrumental tracks on the album, including “Roses for Annie” and the opening track “Merridy’s Ayre.” With Thurber’s quick-strummed cover of the Beatles classic “Blackbird,” he manages to make the song sound like it always should have been played thus, on humble, folky strings with the wry voice of Thurber delivering the famous lyrics in a low, but bright voice. He also folkifies another American rock song, with a cover of The Youngbloods’ “Darkness, Darkness”—a purely and heartily strummed instrumental take. But Thurber’s takes on classics don’t just stop at rock ‘n’ roll; they proceed onto, well, classical, with his rendition of Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.” Thurber turns the song—which at this point feels deeply associated with all things fancy and fine—into an expertly plucked acoustic lullaby of sorts, as the familiarity of the song rouses and the soft guitars lull.

Altogether, King Thurber’s While Thinking of You adds to the nostalgic tradition of dusty Americana music that still gleams with a patina of tradition and well-worn care. Stream it wherever you stream, or visit kingthurber.com to buy.

Change of Direction

The Russo brothers turn Cherry into their tries-toohard attempt to be taken seriously.

F

or six years, Joe and Anthony Russo were immersed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. As wildly successful as those movies were—collectively grossing more than six-and-a-half billion dollars worldwide—they’re not exactly the kind of movies that get people to take you seriously as filmmakers. So after a 20-year career spent almost exclusively on superheroes, episodic television and high-concept comedies, you could understand how the Russos might want to do something Serious.

Something about Issues. Something that makes people think, “Hey, these guys are more than caretakers of intellectual property; they’re directors.”

It’s awfully hard to watch Cherry—the Russos’ adaptation of Nico Walker’s 2018 novel—without feeling like you’re getting sprayed by the sweat coming off of these guys as they direct themselves into a frenzy. Here is a two-and-a-half hour epic of war and love and addiction in which by God and sonny Jesus these guys are going to direct so that you know you’ve seen some directing.

From a prologue that shows our unnamed protagonist (Tom Holland) as a bank-robbing junkie circa 2007, the narrative circles back to show us how he got there. We see him as a college student from Cleveland, meeting the love of his life, Emily (Ciara Bravo); we see her dump him, inspiring his impulsive decision to sign up for the Army; we see them get back together, and make yet another impulsive decision to get married before he leaves for basic training. And, of course, we then see his experience as a medic in Iraq, leading to posttraumatic stress that ultimately leads him into opioid addition.

That’s a shit-ton of narrative to pack into one movie, and Cherry does so with clearly delineated chapters for each phase of “Cherry’s” experience. It leaves plenty of time for the ugly details of being in combat, like trying to stuff a soldier’s intestines back into his body, or finding the corpse of a buddy burnt to a crisp. And it leaves plenty of time for the ugly details of living as an addict, making terrible choices and living on the verge of death.

In theory, there’s certainly nothing wrong with a movie covering either of these subjects in an unvarnished manner, nor even with covering both of those subjects in that manner. The problems come when you get a whiff of the way the Russos quickly show themselves interested in giving all of that to you with style. When Cherry takes Ecstasy, the experience gets its own special filter to show you his point of view; ditto for when the characters dip their toes into OxyContin. Maybe one scene will abruptly become a frozen tableau; maybe another scene will trot out the old “sustained single take” to give you that real taste of the battlefield. Any individual one of these things can work, but the accumulation of them is positively exhausting. By the time one point-of-view shot literally takes us up Holland’s ass, it becomes hard to tune into anything resonant this story might be saying about the struggles of being a veteran, or trying to kick drugs.

Just as frustrating is the sense that Cherry is meant to be not just a gritty commentary on American Middle East veterans trying to return to stateside life, but a satirical commentary on … I don’t know, everything.

As useful as it might be to leaven such a heavy tale with a little comic relief, the alarm bells go off when the places Cherry robs to fund his and Emily’s drug habit are cleverly named ShittyBank, and CapitalistOne, and Bank Fucks America. There’s not a solitary thing about Cherry that benefits from subtlety and restraint, including Holland’s performance, which feels exactly like something pitched between broad satire and serious drama. I don’t begrudge the Russos for wanting to steer their filmmaking careers in a new direction; Cherry simply suggests that they were trying to go in all the directions—and do all the kinds of direction—at once.

So, his sense of being a mess of unassembled puzzle parts gave way to a deeper contentment—an understanding that the jumble was just fine the way it was. Any Utahn who hasn’t heard of Ivory Homes would have to be living on the dark side of the moon. For more than 30 years, this Utah developer has built and sold more than 20,000 homes and established 70-plus communities.

They offer more than a hundred home designs and 45-plus model homes to choose from.

The CEO, Clark Ivory, is obsessed with getting affordable housing into the mix of options for Utah homebuyers. He’s certainly not alone because politicians, bankers, business leaders and developers statewide are working on this damnable housing problem.

As we know, Utah is undergoing unprecedented growth with more people moving in than out, and all need a place to live in that they can afford. Sadly, Ivory and his minions have come head-to-head with local communities in their attempts to increase density where traditional zoning laws make it challenging to build anything other than single family homes on large lots.

We aren’t building any more land, and the future will be grim for homebuyers if we don’t start revamping how many dwellings can go on one lot. Ivory visualizes bringing more housing options into our future, with plans for homes with accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and homes on smaller lots in subdivisions where they are allowed.

Ivory Homes is offering “workforce housing” for owner-occupied homes (not rentals) to first-time homebuyers, first responders, teachers, veterans and military, nurses, construction workers, police officers and public employees. Rules to qualify for Ivory’s special affordable housing are simple: Use their preferred lender. (You can’t use your own Realtor because they don’t offer any commission to your agent. But you, of course, can pay for your own representation.)

The Salt Lake Board of Realtors is currently offering a limited number of $5,000 grants to single parents who are first-time homebuyers.

Other housing assistance can be found through the Utah Housing Corp., which offers statewide mortgage loans to qualified firsttime homebuyers as well as homebuyers who previously have owned a home. Also, more than 50 banks and lenders can help navigate the loan process for a Utah Housing loan.

It may be hard as hell to find a property to buy these days, but with perseverance—and maybe five or ten tries at offers—you can put a home, condo or town home under contract.

Sellers these days are getting multiple offers and are not inclined to pay the 2-3% of the purchase price toward your closing costs, so, if you haven’t saved enough, you’ll need help.

But there is help: Do your research and talk to a good lender who can lay out all the data about loan options and programs offering help with down payments and closing costs.

Community Development Corp of Utah is another place to look for assistance for firsttime homebuyers, too.

Police Report Brandon Soules, 19, was arrested by police in Coolidge, Arizona, on Feb. 17, for falsely reporting to police that he had been kidnapped in an apparent scheme to get out of work. On Feb. 10, police found Soules lying near a water tower with his hands bound behind his back and a bandana in his mouth, the Associated Press reported. Soules told officers two men had kidnapped him from his home, knocked him unconscious and driven him around in his car looking for money his father had hidden around town, but detectives could find no evidence of a kidnapping or assault, and when pressed, Soules confessed he made the story up to avoid work at The Tire Factory, which subsequently fired him.

The Passing Parade Mr. Friendly Auto Service in Warren, Michigan, is one of two auto repair businesses in the area targeted by a serial pooper, police say. The man, seen on surveillance video, entered parked, unlocked vehicles to do his business, leaving his deposit behind for workers to find the next day, Fox 2 reported. The man first struck in November and returned in January, said Chris Phillips, manager of Mr. Friendly. In February, police said, the man struck at nearby Twin Tire, going from car to car until he found one left unlocked because of an electrical problem. “Now we’ve got double padlocks on the gate,” said Phillips. “The guy needs to be caught. There is something wrong with him.”

Smooth Reaction Vidam Perevertilov, 52, chief engineer on a supply ship sailing in the South Pacific from New Zealand to Pitcairn Island, fell overboard after finishing his shift at 4 a.m. on Feb. 16. Alone in the dark and without a life jacket, Perevertilov nevertheless started swimming toward a spot that appeared on the horizon at dawn, The Guardian reported. The spot turned out to be an abandoned fishing buoy and Perevertilov spent the next 14 hours clinging to it before being rescued by his crew, who noticed his absence six hours after he fell and were able to determine where he left the ship. Perevertilov’s son, Marat, said his father was unhurt, but exhausted, and he left the buoy in the ocean “so it could save another person’s life.”

On Feb. 26 and through the weekend following, Mad Men’s suave Don Draper could be seen relaxing at the bar with a cocktail, joined by others, including Jimmy Fallon, Al Roker and Audrey Hepburn’s Holly Golightly, the Associated Press reported. Restaurant vice president Daniel Turtel said it was a “fun, safe way to fill some of the seats that need to remain empty as we continue to fight the pandemic.”

Recent Alarming Headlines Shannon Stevens, along with her brother Erik and his girlfriend, snowmobiled to Erik’s yurt in the backcountry near Haines, Alaska, on Feb. 13 and got the scare of a lifetime when she was attacked from below by a bear in an outhouse, the Associated Press reported. Erik heard his sister’s screams and went out to investigate, opening the toilet seat to find “a bear face ... just looking right back up through the hole, right at me,” he said. He shut the lid and ran back to the yurt, where they treated Shannon’s wound with a first aid kit and determined is wasn’t serious. Alaska Department of Fish and Game Wildlife Management biologist Carl Koch said the bear probably swiped at her with its paw, rather than biting her. “She could be the only person on Earth that this has ever happened to,” Koch speculated.

Awwwwww Reuters reported on Feb. 24 that a wayward sheep found in a forest in Australia, has been shorn of the more than 77 pounds of fleece he was carrying and is now recovering at Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary near Lancefield, Victoria. Named Baarack by his rescuers, the sheep was “in a bit of a bad way,” said the sanctuary’s Kyle Behrend. “Sheep need to be shorn at least annually, otherwise the fleece continues to grow and grow ... He was underweight and due to all the wool around his face he could barely see.”

Family Values On Feb. 10, prosecutors in Indianapolis charged Jeremy Farmer, 36, with murdering his father, Fred Farmer, 58, who disappeared in November of 2019. Without a body, a weapon or a murder scene, detectives based their case instead on evidence that Jeremy cleaned out his dad’s bank account, used his truck and credit cards, and likely sent fake texts full of emojis that Fred never used from his father’s cellphone to family and friends for two months after the disappearance, WXIN-TV reported. Police hope someone will come forward with information about the fate of Fred Farmer.

Government in Action Leslie Pilgrim of Huntington Beach, California, waited more than two hours at the DMV in Laguna Hills in early February to get a REAL ID, an upgraded driver’s license that will be required for airline travel starting in October. Staying compliant with COVID-19 safety rules, Pilgrim left her mask on throughout the process and was startled when officials took her photo while still wearing her mask, she told Fox 11. The clerk realized the error and took another photo, but when the new ID arrived in the mail, Pilgrim’s masked-up face was on the license. The DMV advised her the license is valid, even with the mask, but Pilgrim is not taking any chances: She’s getting a new one made. “(A)t the end of the day, this is funny,” she said. “With all the things happening in the world right now, this is an incredibly minor inconvenience,” she said.

Lost and Found Phoenix police were called to a home on Feb. 21 by homeowners who unearthed a duffel bag filled with rusted handguns and assault rifles while digging a hole in their backyard to plant a tree, Fox News reported. Officers said the guns will be examined to determine if they were used in any crimes. The residents have lived in the house for four years; before that, it was a rental property.
