I wonder if [Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall] has walked a mile in their shoes. It would be nice if we saw more stories where cops did good, rather than hyping up the rare tragedies.

Half the battle is getting people to stop fearing and hating police and teaching people how to act in a way that puts them at ease.

Citizens have an obligation to de-escalate as well.

It boggles my mind that in a “free” society, where the police exist to protect the rights and the safety of the people, that “try to de-escalate a situation first before shooting someone” even needs to be said. After Utah’s new record daily COVID case count of 1,960, it’s clear what the State of Utah has been doing for the past eight months: implementing a plan to squirm out from under criticism if and when things get out of control. That day has come.

The governor and his politicized health department have refused to use the powers of government to bear down on the virus, instead cheerleading the people to take individual responsibility for solving the ugly China ball of wax.

flourished in the clubs of New York City. That’s the world in which Donald Trump thrived first. It’s where he learned to attract the willing and how to take advantage of his creepy attributes. It takes more than just being handed a bunch of money. Anybody can be an awful landlord, and anybody can get lucky at both craps and real estate. It takes a special persuasion to morph from creepy to evil, though. Trump learned to enjoy being a creep, he learned to like belittling and hurting people. (See Little Marco Rubio and COVID-19) Yes, I think he’s evil. Not because I’m susceptible to conspiracies or that I’m a Trump hater. Nope. I have always hated all men like Donald Trump. He had every advantage I didn’t—other than looks, of course. My reckoning came in a very basic way. A couple of girls I’d taken a fancy to were not swayed by my golf swing. However, they were swayed by golf trips to Mexico. I had male friends that got those same golf trips. They were the caddie, the gofers.

Put faces on all of that. Melania, Ivana and Marla are easy. I met them all with different names decades ago.

Pompeo pulled up the Vette. Mike Lee is a caddie, lower tier. Lee would be nothing without a Trump to pecker him along. He spent his life and the first of his Senate years looking for the ride that would get someone to pay attention to him. Now he’s aboard, and he can’t let go. He’s sunk every bit of morality he ever claimed to have into the waste bucket of Trumpism. Like any good caddie, all he has to do is please the boss. When the remaining 48 of you decide to vote, think of that. Trump has converted and trained the next level of creeps to do what he does.

When this newspaper hits the street on Wednesday, there will be only six days remaining to cast your ballot for the Nov. 3, 2020, elections. If you are one of the 48 remaining undecided voters, continue reading. I figure at this point, it’s not up to me to tell you what to do, and I’m just going to tell a story. If you fall into the “everyone else” category, turn the pages, pick a favorite place to grab a beer and some nachos from one of the advertisers in the dining and nightlife sections of this paper, and drink till the cows come home.

It’s all you can do. I’ve already done all I can do. I’ve voted. I hit the boxes of every Democrat on the card except for two, and I’ll leave those two to your imagination. You aren’t the Amazing Kweskin if you think one of those was Donald J. Trump. I didn’t vote for him and, for the record, I won’t vote for Don Jr. come 2024. He’s a bad apple, that kid. Not everyone agrees with me that the Trump family is the worst group of hucksters to ever benefit from America’s private education system, but I will not be shaken from that tree. Some people like to be suckered, I guess.

I’m always amazed at the attraction some men and women have for creepy guys. It’s a real phenomenon. When I was in junior high and high school, there were three types of guys who got nowhere with the girls or were bullied by the guys. They were the smart guys, the shy guys and the creepy guys. I was shy and smart (so was the claim, although my report cards invalidated that), meaning it would not be until my senior year that I went on an official date.

By that senior year, I finally noticed that while the shy and smart guys—me being an exception—were still hanging out at the punch and cookie table at school dances, some of the creepy guys were gathering packs of new friends.

They were early adopters of guitars, motorcycles, fast cars, forbidden music, cigarettes, sluffing school, Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill (which is still only $3.56 online; we used to pay 2 bucks, I think. Amazing!) and, of course, the new kid on the block: marijuana. Not everyone partook of all the above, and I profess guilt to all of them except fast cars and motorcycles. It’s just that the creeps were the pioneers and even the goody two-shoe types slid along. Keeping secrets begins at a young age in Utah.

I was 21 when I began tending bar at one of the hottest clubs in the city, Club 39. One of the first things I noticed was that there were lots of pretty girls hanging out and nearly all of them had older boyfriends who flashed lots of money. A subset were the guys who spilled out lots of cocaine, and they, too, attracted lots of pretty girls. Nearly a decade after becoming a teenager, it became crystal clear to me what some men and women used to attract friends: money or drugs. Sex, too, but even shy guys get lucky.

It also became obvious that wherever there were guys, girls, money and drugs, a whole new species of persons could be found—the groupies and the hangers-on. Those guys were easily swayed and impressed by power—“Hey, grab my Vette and pull it out front”—and once hooked into that orbit are forever owned. Just as easily owned were the girls who knew the correct answer to “wanna go for a ride in my Vette?”

Vexing Texts

It’s kind of like watching a family fight play out on reality TV. This, however, is anything but entertaining. The Salt Lake City School District is enmeshed in a bitter internal battle gone public, Fox13 News reports. Board members sent emails and texts that disparaged another board member, staff and some parents. It was a stunning reminder that everyone has opinions, and no one seems to have the ability—or good sense—to keep them private anymore. Whether this was just a really poor communication choice or a policy violation is yet to be determined.

But it is a stark reminder that Utah has rules surrounding meeting protocol and access to government records. And for the sake of the community, discussions about how to open schools in a pandemic need to be public. And, surprise, surprise, they were.

Well, hooray—we think—for Utah’s two gubernatorial candidates standing up for civility.

You know, civility—that thing Utahns keep calling for but just can’t bring themselves to practice. In this campaign-ish ad, the two stand 6 feet apart and proclaim that they can disagree without being hateful. There are a couple of issues at play here, one being that neither candidate has anything to lose by being civil to the other. Spencer Cox has all but been anointed the next governor.

CNN’s Chris Cillizza noted that: “Short but cynical bit of context: Cox is heavily favored to win this race. Would the candidates do this sort of ad if the race were really close? I doubt it!” Then of course, there’s the irony in Cox’s unabashed support of Mr. Anti-civility himself, Donald Trump. And yet it’s nice to see this ad go viral, and not in a virulent way.

Who will you vote for in your state school board race?

Which judges are running?

Do you even know who they are? “A Johns Hopkins University survey reveals that one-third of Americans can’t name their governor and 80 percent can’t name their state legislator,” Governing.com reports.

This doesn’t bode well for down-ballot races, does it? The year 2020 will be the first when voters choose state school board members in partisan races. We’re guessing that in red Utah, Republicans will have a leg up. Some organizations such as the Hinckley Institute of Politics have been trying to help. In early October, The Salt Lake Tribune ran an op-ed pointing voters to video debates. Nine people responded.

The Trib noted that the GOP candidate for District 3 is the director of a charter school being investigated for not tracking $4 million in special ed funding. He may end up winning and administering $5.6 billion for state schools. District 11 has a right-winger who decries anti-racist training and anything but the “natural family.”

The two concepts that have dominated American news in 2020—the political discord inspired by the Donald Trump presidency, and the COVID19 pandemic—collide in an unexpected way in Pygmalion Theatre Co.’s season-opener, White Savior. While the production of Catherine Filloux’s world premiere—about family members clashing over their disparate political philosophies— was originally planned as a conventional theater show, before it became clear that it would have to become Pygmalion’s firstever recorded live performance.

The production will be available free of charge (with donations welcome) at pygmalionproductions.org, Nov. 1-30.

According to the show’s director and Pygmalion artistic director Fran Pruyn, there were plenty of unique complications involved in staging a show about family members that also took into account COVID-necessitated safety guidelines. “Getting the proximity was the biggest thing,” she says. “It is a natural thing for human beings to have close relationships; you’re not 10 feet away. And [the actors] have to be 10 feet away to be

What’s funny during this weird, crazy year? That’s a tricky question, and one every professional comedian has had to face as they consider working current events into their comedy. For Pete Jr.—a regular at Wiseguys comedy venues and KBER radio, coming to the West Jordan Wiseguys (3763 W. Center Park Dr., wiseguyscomedycom) on Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m., $15—the key to turning something like, say, a pandemic into comedy is all in the approach.

“You just want to ensure you’re doing it in a way that’s not minimizing pain people have felt, but rather one that acknowledges we’re all going through a hardship together,” Pete says via email. “That’s one of the beautiful things about comedy—a good joke allows a room full of strangers to share a moment of pure joy.”

Pete Jr. has been sharing that joy for a decade now, and finds that the COVID-19 closures of live performance venues led to a new appreciation for his job. “I didn’t realize how much I needed comedy prior

unmasked. … Every natural instinct was sort of thwarted.”

While the political burnout of this year is real for so many people, Pruyn emphasizes that she believes White Savior is a human tale. “The real story is about two sisters, and the polarization between their political viewpoints, and how they can even begin to have a natural, familial conversation and relationship,” Pruyn says. “That’s the story I think many of us, I know I have, had to dance around since 2016. It is in a sense a piece of political theater, but it’s more about people from disparate viewpoints who do love each other.” (Scott Renshaw)

History is full of little-known tales of how people from underrepresented groups changed the world. Among those is the story of the Soviet Union’s World War II-era 588th Night Bomber Regiment—an all-women group of pilots who flew under the cover of darkness, dropping bombs on the German forces every 15 minutes to keep them awake throughout the night, all while flying wood-and-canvas biplanes.

Their ability to glide in with engines off and attack undetected led the Germans to think of them as riding on broomsticks, referring to the pilots as nachthexen, or “night witches.”

Salt Lake City-based playwright Rachel Bublitz chronicled this fascinating historical footnote in her play The Night Witches, which debuted at the 2019 Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival directed by Alexandra Harbold, who returns to oversee this first-ever live virtual production for the University of Utah Department of Theatre. The narrative follows two rookie flyers, Nina and Vera, who have just completed their training and are about to undertake their first combat

Harris acknowledges that there are unique limitations and challenges for a writer from a creativity standpoint when working with a licensed property. “It’s a really tough balancing act,” she says. “You want to write a book that you can personally be proud of as a writer, but also one that the license-holder will be proud to include in their line. What makes it easier is if you love that licensed property in the first place, because than what you do will be true to that world. Approaching a licensed property that you don’t know as well is super hard.

I’ve done it, and I wouldn’t recommend it.”

For writers who might want to follow in her footsteps, Harris offers a familiar piece of writerly advice: “Don’t give up. For a while, I was doing talks in schools because

or any aspiring writer, getting a chance to write for a living at all can feel like winning the lottery. Now imagine getting a chance to write some of the most popular and beloved characters in pop culture—characters that you grew up reading and loving yourself.

Nearly a decade into a professional career that has seen her publish more than a dozen books for adults and youth, Holladay author Carrie Harris got a shot at Marvel’s X-Men in a prose tie-in novel, Liberty and Justice For All (releasing Nov. 3). Set during a time period when the X-Men had fragmented into two groups, it focuses on two young mutants, Triage and Tempus, who are students at the New Xavier Institute led

by Cyclops, Magneto and Emma Frost.

Harris’s journey toward writing for the X-Men includes her own long-time familiarity with the comics and the 1990s animated TV series. “The cartoons were my first exposure,” she says. “I lived in a tiny town that didn’t have a comic-book shop.

There was a store that had one rack, and I’d read whatever X-Men issues they stocked, but it was never sequential. … But the thing I liked most about X-Men was that some of these characters felt like me: normal suburban girls, who were also superheroes.”

Later, as a college student, Harris’s inter-

est in fantastical worlds led her to writing for tabletop role-playing games. After several years of having children, working a regular day job and finally attempting to write full-time in 2011, Harris notes that it was a bit of a challenge unlearning certain writing tendencies that make sense in the gaming world. “Games are very much a balance between character and plot,” she says. “You want to have enough plot for players to feel entertained, but not so much that they feel railroaded. … When you’re writing games, you really want to leave space for creativity. I had to learn how much to include in books.”

It was her background in gaming that ultimately led to her opportunity to write for X-Men. Aconyte Books was creating tie-in books for role-playing games, and Harris threw her hat in the ring for those assignments initially. Shortly thereafter, Aconyte signed a licensing deal with Marvel, and asked Harris if she had any interest. “It took me less than 24 hours to send in my pitch, because I was afraid someone else might beat me to it,” she says.

Harris picked a time period in the X-Men chronology that’s less familiar to many fans who know the characters mostly from either the animated series or the movie franchise, yet one that also can be welcoming to those fans. “Part of the reason I picked that time period was because [Marvel] wanted to give some of the characters who haven’t really had a chance in the spotlight a chance to shine,” she says.

“This was a group of mutants that a lot of people haven’t heard of, but the fan favorites are still there, and are their teachers.”

Not surprisingly when working with a valuable, established franchise property, there was an editorial process that involved a lot of input from Marvel. Yet according to Harris, “That process was a lot smoother than I imagined. Part of it comes down to the fact that they’ve done this before. They’ve got it down to a science. They asked a couple of questions, ‘What about this?,’ probably six or seven go-rounds of making the outline longer and figuring out

she says, from “experts to man- or woman-on-the-street, and the list goes on.”

She asked for lists of women from all walks of life and drew from databases such as Better Days 2020, which has maintained close connections to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In the final stages, the pandemic prevented face-to-face workshop interactions. So, she sent out an email to an expansive list of individuals requesting advice, input and participation from those willing to contribute at a distance with no workshop, encouraging them to cite someone from their community. Haworth herself probably cut only three images of the more than 250.

“It is a tribute to women’s endurance, whether Mormon pioneer or Native American,” she says. Haworth also wanted women who were less well known. “We know we failed because there are 1.5 million women who are not on that mural,” she says.

To deflect the criticism of the process, Haworth and Anderson agreed to run a workshop with those upset by the omissions. Ultimately, 30 faces have been added to bring more balance to the piece.

Haworth says none of those missing images were intentional.

Lt. Gov. candidate Deidre Henderson exploded over what she called “the exclusion and marginalization of Republican women’s voices.” And no, she, too, is too “humble” to put her own likeness up.

“I didn’t look at whether a person was a Republican or Democrat,” says Haworth. “It’s like religious affiliation—you don’t mark a person as they belong to this or that,” she said. “… it’s evolving and that’s what we want.”

But Lonsberry sees only the missing. “You’d be hard-pressed to find a conservative, a Republican, or anyone involved in the Relief Society—the largest and oldest organization on this planet,” he said. “… and somehow these women don’t deserve to be commemorated?” Lonsberry seemed upset that Zions had “surrendered” to Haworth all the artistic license to make “those choices.”

In truth, that’s not exactly how it works, according to Haworth. The process for inclusion was part outreach, part Q&A with artists wanting to cut stencils, part surveying local news reports and books and films, and then recalling the conversations, Haworth says. Her team reached out in several ways including a call-in radio show, a high school survey, an arts festival survey and a call for names at The Leonardo. Plus, she asked for help from the mayor’s office, the U of U’s science colleges and medical school— basically “anyone who would listen,”

Haworth is often noted as the artist who, with her husband, created the 2004 Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Band Beatles album cover. But her enduring legacy may be “A Work in Progress— the Women’s History Mural,” which she constructed with her daughter, Liberty Blake. It was, in effect, a feminist counterpoint to the Beatles’ album cover, which included only 12 women of the 65 people featured.

Some copies of panels from the “Work” mural were carried in the 2017 Women’s March on Washington. In 2018, this collaborative project traveled to Milan, Italy, for exhibit and, having now grown to 14 panels, is being shown at the Southern Utah Museum of Art in Cedar City until Dec. 23.

Haworth calls her works organic; it has certainly grown tendrils beyond the seeds she planted.

Yet, conservative feminists in Utah felt unseen in this project. KSL NewsRadio’s Lee Lonsberry devoted a broadcast to the aggrieved Republicans who wondered out loud about the “motivation” behind the art.

Mia Love, whom Lonsberry called “too humble” to ask for her own likeness on the mural, complained vociferously about the absence of former U.S. representative and weeping sensation Enid Greene Mickelsen. Love, Utah’s first Black Republican congresswoman, and the Eagle Forum’s Gayle Ruzicka both bemoaned the omission of the late House Speaker Becky Lockhart. Certainly, Lockhart is seen as an iconic breaker of glass ceilings, but

Enter Mia Love and Gayle Ruzicka and the snowflakes of conservative Utah who have turned a celebratory rendering into political dodgeball.

Not even Zions Bank could escape their righteous indignation.

Zions CEO Scott Anderson commissioned artist Jann Haworth and muralist Alex Johnstone to create a large-scale work that marks a century since the 19th Amendment was ratified granting women the right to vote.

The five-story tall “Utah Women 2020” mural is displayed on the downtown Dinwoodey Building in Salt Lake City featured stenciled portraits of 250 women from across the state.

The project, however, was immediately besieged by waves of criticism from Utah conservatives. “What was to be inclusive devolved to be divisive and politicized,” says Haworth.

“The mural is a ‘workshop and email friendship quilt.’ Reducing the mural to a political football or numbers game is disrespectful to the 175 artists and community members that gave collectively thousands of hours to bring this mural into being.”

That politicizing and the collateral criticisms haven’t deterred either Haworth or Anderson, who Haworth says has been encouraged by the open dialogue. And in the spirit of dialogue, they invited the artistic pundits to a DIY mural “add on.”

“Utah is very good about community inclusion,” says Haworth, “If inclusion can work, this is a good place to test it.”

Ballots Gone Postal

Whether mailed in, dropped off or cast by machine on Election Day, voting in Utah remains safe and easy.

his election year, voting by mail— how to do it, why do it and its security—has come up again and again. The president has many times, and falsely, criticized the practice, suggesting it leads to fraud. But in deep-red Utah, which is sending a record 1.6 million ballots to registered voters, this is something election officials have been working toward for years. For Utah voters, voting by mail is now the norm, not the exception.

Why that’s the case might puzzle some in this heavily partisan era. Utah bleeds red and other states that mail ballots to all voters—Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii—lean Democrat. The goal, however, according to election officials and voter advocates interviewed by City Weekly, all comes back to increasing voter turnout, something that, on the surface, doesn’t seem very Republican.

Catherine Weller, co-president of the League of Women Voters of Utah, finds it interesting how vote-by-mail has become a partisan issue recently. “It’s all a little bit puzzling,” she said, since Utah’s vote-by-mail laws were passed by a Republican-led Legislature and signed by a Republican governor.

Utah could be considered the outlier when it comes to mail-in voting.

According to a Brookings Institute report, “Republicans fear mail balloting will increase votes for Democrats. They worry that individuals who are part of groups that typically vote in lower numbers will cast absentee ballots because of the ease of doing so. This includes young people, lowincome people, minorities and those without access to transportation.”

But that doesn’t really jibe with Utah’s Republican majority get-out-the-vote mantra. Additionally, Republicans, by

and large, continue to win elections across the state (Salt Lake and Wasatch counties being the exceptions).

Utah’s lieutenant governor and Republican gubernatorial candidate Spencer Cox spent a lot of his time in his position working to increase voter turnout. His Twitter feed during the 2018 election was almost a daily update on the state’s voting numbers.

“One of my goals when I became lieutenant governor was to increase voter turnout,” he wrote on Twitter last year. “I’m so grateful to legislators and county clerks that helped to make this happen. But mostly I’m grateful to all voters—new and old. The world is run by those who show up!”

And show up they did. According to a report from Pew Charitable Trusts, Utah’s voter turnout went from 45th in the country in 2014 to 13th in 2018, equivalent to about 58% of the voting age population. This year, it’s expected to be even higher. For example, in 2018, Salt Lake County had 517,000 registered voters. As of Oct. 12, when the county sent out vote-by-mail ballots, there were 596,000.

“Utah has a real sense of civic responsibility,” Weller says, noting that politicians and community leaders want people to vote and are committed to making it easier to vote. “Voteby-mail is a way to do that,” she says.

Utah Director of Elections Justin Lee notes that each registered active voter will receive a ballot via the mail this election season. Even before COVID-19 caused people to stay at home and avoid crowds, the state had been pre-

paring for widespread voting by mail.

“We’ve been transitioning to vote-bymail ever since 2012,” Lee says, “and this year, every county was going to run their elections by mail even before there was a pandemic … for us, we haven’t had to make too many changes, particularly for November.”

Election officials across the state have been encouraging voters to use their mail-in ballots instead of waiting to vote in person at “vote centers” and polling places on Election Day. “It’s more important than it’s ever been that we do not have people show up at vote centers when they have received a by-mail ballot,” Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen tells City Weekly.

“The vote centers are for people who did not receive a ballot in the mail— those could be people who didn’t update their address or people who didn’t register to vote,” Swensen says. If there are too many people at vote centers, especially in socially distanced lines, the line could extend outside the doors and could be very long.

Voters can drop off their mail-in ballots at official drop boxes up to and including Election Day. Mailed-in ballots need to be postmarked by Monday, Nov. 2. Given the increase in mail-in ballots this year, county election officials such as Swensen hope voters will submit ballots as early as possible.

That way, come election night on Nov. 3, counties can release early results.

“As soon as we get a ballot back, it’s scanned in and the signature is verified,” Swensen says. “We will release on election night ballots that have

come in up and to Election Day. But on Election Day in 2018, we received over 90,000 ballots the very day of—that’s between people in the mail, mailing them by the deadline, dropping them in drop boxes and even depositing them at the vote centers and obviously we can’t get those in on election night.”

The state also doesn’t make any races official on election night. That doesn’t happen until the canvas that concludes two weeks after Election Day. Despite what the president says about wanting to know results the night of, that’s never officially the case.

Utah election director Lee says it’s important for voters to keep expectations realistic on Election Day. While initial election night results might signal how a race will turn out, districts such as Utah’s 4th Congressional District (where Democratic incumbent Rep. Ben McAdams and former NFL player Burgess Owens are facing off) are notorious for having close races, so voters might have to be patient.

“For most races, we still know fairly well what’s going to happen on election night,” Lee says. But, he stresses, “Election officials don’t call races. We certify election results two weeks after the election. It’s the media that likes to call races. For us, election night results are always preliminary—nothing’s official.”

If election results are still being tabulated after Nov. 3, Weller adds, there’s no cause for alarm. “It’s an indication of counties taking the time to properly count and process ballots,” she says.

What poll watchers can and can’t do in Utah.

W

hile most Utah voters will keep their distances and vote by mail this election year, there are still thousands who will vote in person at a vote center on Election Day. Whether they see any red MAGA-hat-wearing President Donald Trump supporters, though, remains to be seen.

“I’m urging my supporters to go into the polls and watch very carefully because that’s what has to happen,” the president said during the first presidential debate. That comment stirred up concerns on poll watching and voter intimidation. So, what does that mean for Utah voters?

Utah has laws outlining electioneering, the activity of trying to persuade people to vote a certain way. Anybody holding up signs and cheering, for example—has to be 150 feet away from a voting location. But there is a way for political parties and candidates to have observers at the polls overseeing the vote process, and they’re known as poll watchers.

“We’ve always had poll watchers,” Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen says. “It isn’t anything new,” she says, noting they haven’t had problems with it or had people acting out of order.

Utah Director of Elections Justin Lee says people are allowed to go to the polls and watch, and most observe ballot processing. “They just need to contact the county clerk in advance,” he says.

“Their job is to watch,” Lee says. “If they see something, they can take memos. They’re allowed to record so long as they’re not revealing how people vote. But they can’t interfere in any way. If they see something, they can reach

after Election Day, that’s not necessarily a problem, and we shouldn’t believe that it is. We should believe people are doing their jobs unless we’ve seen otherwise.”

Unfortunately, in this election cycle, the vote-by-mail process has been plagued by misinformation. The president, for example, has insinuated it could lead to forgery or stolen ballots, but the numbers don’t back that up.

According to a study from the Brennan Center for Justice, there is no evidence that suggests mail-in ballots increase fraud. The threat is “infinitesimally small,” the report states.

In Utah, election officials match a signature to one that’s on file. Swensen stresses that it’s a handwriting comparison.

Voters don’t need to worry about whether their signature on file with the clerk contains their middle initial or not, for example. The voter “would always be notified if there’s an issue,” she says. Even if a ballot goes to an address where the voter no longer resides, Swensen says, for someone else to use that ballot to vote, that person would need to forge the voter’s signature.

“We’re trying to reassure voters,” Lee says. “There’s really not any indication that there’s any kind of widespread fraud or ballot tampering or any of those issues being floated out there happening in Utah. We’ve been doing this for a while, and it’s safe and secure.”

Not only that but you can track your ballot on the state’s website at vote.utah.gov to make sure it was received and counted.

If someone is worried about using a mail-in ballot and decides instead to go to a vote center on Election Day, Lee says, some county clerks will give them a paper ballot and have them complete the same process they would have done by mail. Thus, the mail-in option remains the best in most cases.

Still, the misinformation campaign might be taking a toll, Weller says. More people than usual are telling her they’re going to vote in person because they don’t trust their ballot to make it to the clerk in time.

“That’s one of the things I’m profoundly saddened by,” she says. “Both because I think the postal service by and large is a very capable and good organization that’s handled the ballots very well from year to year and because I’m concerned about the disinformation that makes people question their democracy when they shouldn’t need to.”

With Election Day just days away, Utah might still be the red state outlier when it comes to voter participation. But that’s a good thing in the eyes of many.

“It’s a very efficient way for people to vote,” Swensen concludes. “Voters have time to get their ballot, review the candidates and the issues and make their choices—informed choices.” CW

Things poll watchers observe: • Setup or take down of a polling location • Voter check-in at a polling location • Ballot collection, receipt and processing • Transmission or transport of ballots in an election official’s custody • Opening and inspection of a manual ballot • Ballot duplication • Voting machine logic and accuracy testing • Ballot tabulation • Storing and securing a ballot • Post-election audits • A canvassing board meeting • A recount • Certification of election results A poll watcher is not allowed to electronically record any activity that would violate a voter’s privacy or interfere with voting center processes nor can they divulge information related to votes cast for a candidate or proposition until results are made public.

If any form of voter intimidation does occur, voting staff knows to alert law enforcement. Swensen says they’ve also let local law enforcement know of the voting locations “just as a precaution,” so, if the need arises, “they’ll be there to help us.”

“We have not experienced that,” Swensen says about any voter intimidation. “I’m hoping we won’t because I know we’ve heard a lot about it on the news.” (Ray Howze) CW

Sabor to Adore

C

onsidering the wide variety of areperias, pupuserias and empanaderias that I have visited and subsequently fallen in love with, I’m amazed that I didn’t discover Sabor Latino (multiple locations, saborlatinoutah.com) earlier. It was only when I got wind that this local Latino restaurant opened a second location on North Temple (2080 W. North Temple, 801-3640885) that I realized there was a place—two places, if you count their original South Salt Lake location (3053 S. State Street, Ste. 1, 801-487-2009)—where all of my Central American favorites can be found under one roof.

As I perused their menu that features traditional favorites from Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico and Guatemala, I was hit with an initial wave of skepticism. I’ve been to a few alleged one-stop shops that try to cast a wide net and yank in dishes from multiple culinary biomes. Usually this strategy creates a diverse menu, but one filled with mediocrity—which is always a shame when so many niche restaurants that only make four things are absolutely killing it right now.

To test Sabor Latino’s resolve, I decided to try out a few things from each section of its sprawling menu. I ended up coming home with enough food to share with

my neighbors, who were also grateful for a deep dive into what makes this all-star lineup of Latino flavors tick.

I kicked this experiment off with an arepa mixta ($7.99), out of respect to my most beloved of Central American sandwiches.

It definitely looked the part of a traditional arepa—a grilled cornmeal exterior stuffed beyond all reason with shredded beef, ham, chicken and avocado—which is almost as important as the taste itself. After hefting the unwieldy monster, my first bite was filled with the flavors of tender, marinated meat and creamy avocado. While I can’t say it’s the best arepa I’ve ever had, it was far from mediocre. All of its primary flavors landed at precisely the right time, and it left my hands a gloppy mess, which is the trademark of a decent arepa. At this point, it was safe to say that I was intrigued.

From here, I endeavored to explore Sabor Latino’s take on some of the cheeseand-meat-stuffed sideliners from the world of Central American cuisine. The pupusas revueltas ($2.59) and loroco ($2.59) are solid representations of this classic; I was particularly fond of how much buttery Oaxacan cheese was stuffed inside. Their tamales de elote ($4.99), which share their name with the grilled corn cobs famous in the Central American street food scene, were a variation on tamales that I had yet to try. Where most tamales are filled with shredded meat, these plump, steamed-toperfection tamales let the sweet corn masa occupy the spotlight, and it’s a lovely dining experience. The soft texture and subtle sweetness are staunch reminders of what makes tamales special.

For the ultimate exploration of deepfried dough stuffed with meats and cheeses, the pasaplos mixtos ($10.99) is all one really needs. It’s a basket filled with chicken pastelitos, beef empanaditas and cheese tequeños, and it just might be the all-time best appetizer ever created. Each item brings its own flourish to the basket, and there’s not a sour note to be found. Even

the shredded chicken inside the raviolishaped pastelitos, which can usually be a bit of a throwaway, brings some smoky marinated flavors to the party. Pairing this with some of Sabor Latino’s salsa varieties or their avocado crema was the unexpected hero of my visit.

To round out the grand experiment, it was time to try something that was both unfamiliar to me and touted by the restaurant to be a fan favorite. By this, I of course mean the bandeja paisa ($19.99), a fascinating arrangement of meats like carne asada, Colombian sausage and a crisp chicharron pork rind with rice, beans, plantains, avocado and a goddamn fried egg to top it all off. Hefting it into my car, I swore the thing weighed about twelve pounds. I have seen some insane food piles in my day, dear reader, but attacking this cyclopean mélange solo is an exercise in futility—unless you’re planning on living off of leftovers for the next few days. The impact of this dish lies in its sheer volume, but the method to this madness is clear once you attempt to make a dent in it. Slicing the fried egg open adds that silky yolk texture to the beans, creating a divine gravy with which to slather all those proteins, while the plantain hangs out to provide a shot of starchy sweetness to even out the palate.

After a tasty meditation upon the different cultures and cuisines that I had just experienced thanks to Sabor Latino, it’s clear that there is no wide net of mediocrity cast here. It’s impressive to see how well this restaurant embodies its mission to serve up traditional favorites from all over Latin America, and even more so once you taste how delicious everything is. CW

new craft beer pub came to Salt Lake City as COVID began to shut down the world. Founded in 2013, Beer Zombies—a Las Vegas-based Craft Beer lifestyle brand—zeroed in on Salt Lake to extend their brewing project and become an all-around craft beer ambassador in our capital city. The Beer Zombies gang recently collaborated with two California breweries—Bujos Brewing and Mason Beerworks—on two special IPAs that you can only purchase in Vegas and SLC. Brujos Brewing/Beer Zombies - Wizards & Zombies: Completely turbid, glowing yellowish-orange appearance. The hazy body was topped by a frothy, half-inch tall bright white crown that fell to a thick, lasting collar. The aroma was super hoppy and fruity, with loads of citrus—a big freshlysqueezed orange juice presence. Mango was also quite noticeable, along with a touch of honeydew melon and a bit of dank cannabis.

As the beer warmed, the cannabis notes really intensified; skunky weed came to mind.

Overall, really punchy and super smooth.

The flavor profile was also very hoppy and fruit-forward, but lightly bitter and with little astringency. Grapefruit dominated, white grapefruit specifically. The hop salad definitely makes its presence known here, while tangy clementine and kumquat notes were also apparent, with a subtle honeydew melon-like quality in the center. More grapefruit and grapefruit rind emerged on the back end and in the finish, super pithy and dry, while big grapefruit rind notes lingered after the swallow. With time, a hint of bitterness develops on the back of

the tongue. It offers a medium-light bodied mouthfeel, creamy, slick and smooth. The liquid contained a fine, moderate effervescence that frothed up nicely on the palate.

Overall: Wizards & Zombies is a punchy, fruit-forward and overall really interesting take on a New England-style IPA. This beer turned excessively pithy and bitter on the finish; with a bit more balance, this 10.5 percent beast could be a classic.

Mason Aleworks/BeerZombies - Galaxy Revenge: Pours completely opaque light gold topped with a slight, rocky head of creamy white foam; good retention leaves huge amounts of lacing relentlessly painting the walls of the glass, as well as a minor collar of bubbly foam. This one is about as comprehensively appealing a NEIPA I’ve come across. Aromas of huge dank, herbal citrus burst from the glass, giving backing impressions of light white wine grape alongside a tropical medley that’s so varied, it becomes hard to define. I’m getting guava, papaya, orange and pineapple rind, with lighter tones of passionfruit and peach skins that give way to the faintest creaminess at times. Intense, diverse and balanced.

The taste profile is dank, with herbal pine and earthiness dominating a more nuanced citrus profile similar to the aroma. Plenty of orange, passionfruit, grapefruit pith, guava and pineapple rind can be pulled from the mix. An outstanding union of dank hops and citrus bursts on the finish. The mouthfeel brings a beautifully balanced medium body, slightly juicy and amazingly clean for the level of flavor it carries. Ghostly hop fruits build toward a tightly-composed symphony from the midpalate through the finish.

Overall: Not much of the 8.0 percent alcohol appears in the lingering finish. Intense in its myriad of subtle flavors and so casually balanced, this one is almost too easy to drink. It doesn’t falter much in any area, and has great consistency from start to finish.

These beers may seem Halloweenthemed, but the branding is quite typical for the Beer Zombie pubs year-round.

Ogden Restaurant Week

This year’s installment of Ogden Restaurant Week, our annual opportunity to explore Ogden’s food scene, is going to be slightly adifferent. Instead of enjoying a week-long restaurant crawl up north, participating restaurants are offering $20 gift cards for $10. This will let those eager to explore some of Ogden’s finest restaurants do so at their own pace—or when a basic sense of normalcy is restored to going out and being social.

Pumpkin Spice By the Numbers

Our friends at MagnifyMoney (magnifymoney.com) had some interesting statistics about the pumpkin spice flavor phenomenon—especially as it relates to Utahns. The first and most shocking revelation from their study on pumpkin spice trends is that several vendors have been jacking up the prices of pumpkin spice products—that pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks, for example, is going to cost you over 15% more than their other items of the same size to enjoy. According to this year’s study, Utah found itself in the demographic of shoppers who search most for pumpkin spice items online, along with Montana, Washington, Idaho and Wyoming. We’re so basic.

Doc Brundy’s Reopens

After a temporary closure due to COVID-19, the Spanish Fork restaurant and boutique bowling known as Doc Brundy’s (260 N. Main Street, 801-804-3029, docbrundys.com) will be reopening. In recent social media post, the Doc Brundy’s team announced their reopening in November, though they didn’t specify an exact day. With so many restaurant closures happening across the state, it’s nice to see a place regroup and reopen.

Hopefully we’ll start to see even more restaurants follow suit as they struggle to do business with the pandemic reaching new heights. As Doc Brundy’s also functions as a retro arcade, it will be interesting to see how social distancing guidelines factor into their plans—we’ll see come November.

or anyone who loves to get into the spirit of the holidays, particularly one as delightful as Halloween, it can be a challenge to find music that goes beyond “Monster Mash” or the extra long version of “Thriller.” Below are a few unconventionally creepy music picks for your every Halloween need, be it dancing in your kitchen in your wildest Halloween costume on a Halloween night in or soundtracking your friend group’s spooky Zoom party.

For the Pop Lovers: Kim Petras, Turn Off the Light (2019) – First on this list is a delightful, thriller-themed album by pop princess Kim Petras, an expansion on her shorter 2018 release Turn Off the Light Vol. 1. Though she’s known for sugary-sweet, angst-ridden love and lust-filled material girl ballads, on this album she applies her knack for melodrama to riffs on horror tropes, and references to films like Final Destination (“Wrong Turn”), as well as the occult and its ghastly creatures (“Close Your Eyes”). A base of creepy synths nod to horror movie scores, while shadowy disco beats vampirize the early millennium disco of Justice (“Bloody Valentine”). The pun of “Massacre” scoops the melody right up from “Carol of the Bells,” and it’s still Petras all over. There’s even a feature from Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, providing a Haunted House-esque voiceover on the title track. Instrumentals like “Purgatory,” “o m e n,” “TRANSylvania” and “Boo! Bitch!” help keep the 2010s cinematic feel, while Petras delivers Jennifer’s Body-level sexiness in lyrical tracks like “Death By Sex”—a song which actually lines up well with Petras’ previous work, including the amazingly explicit track “Do Me” from her other full-length, Clarity. Besides standing well on its own outside Halloween, the way that Petras finds a home within the sexy, bloody, romanticized, sacrificial atmosphere of horror cinema on this album is interestingly not that different from the way she writes pop songs about love. For the Goths: Cocteau Twins, Garlands (1982) – Fans of classic goth might think they know all the best dark post-punk that was coming out of the ‘80s and early ‘90s from bands like The Cure, Siouxie Sioux and the Banshees and Bauahus, but one of their contemporaries is often overlooked. Cocteau Twins, though most famous for their seminal 1990 dream pop album Heaven Or Las Vegas, actually debuted as more of a post-punk act. While they’d later apply their sweeping, melodramatic style to more heavenly themes, earlier work was rooted in gothic themes, particularly on 1983’s Head Over Heels (also worth checking out) and on their debut, Garlands. Sometimes bemoaned by fans of their later work for its relative simplicity, Garlands is actually excellently cohesive, comparable to the likes of The Cure’s Pornography. Garlands sounds like it was made by goblins well-acquainted with guitars and reverb pedals, but not with drums; the shivering, glinting guitars that are introduced first on opener “Blood Bitch” are punctuated by the stark beats of a drum machine. This is also Fraser at her creepiest, her undulating, fae-like vocals trembling with bizarre throat warbles that are leagues away from her blitzed-out angel voice on later

Kim Petras albums. It’s hard to pick highlights on an album where each song is a darkly groovy post-punk treat, but the wild “But I’m Not” and the bass-driven “Shallow Then Halo” are favorites. Though not the first pick of most Cocteau Twins fans, this deliciously creepy album is worth visiting if you haven’t, and especially around a time like Halloween. Find it on Spotify.

For the Spookiest Atmosphere: Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks, Halloween is Here (2013) and Ghost Ballads (2013) – The Southern Gothic and folk meanderings of Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks are an easy go-to pick for any on-theme music, because their name doesn’t lie. The group specializes in a gentler version on murder balladry, telling bumpity tales of woe with a patina of phantasma. That’s true for most of their music, but particularly for their 2013 releases, the separate albums Ghost Ballads and Halloween is Here. If you had to guess which one was genuinely scarier, you’d probably gravitate towards the latter’s tone of delightful doom, but you’d be wrong. Ghost Ballads is the more serious storytelling effort, rife with spindly songs referencing graves ‘n’ bodies, a “Haunted Jamboree,” poltergeists and even ghost ships. It almost feels like their other 2013 album, Halloween is Here, is an out-take album, considering that it came out a few months after Ghost Ballads in October of that year. It’s a grab bag of Halloween fun, or rather maybe one of those Halloween carnival jack-o-lanterns you blindly reach into to guess what “body part” is inside. Stylistically, it lives in the whimsical realm where steampunk and gothic country have laughs together, or tell goofy, spoken word ghost stories (“Ghost Thief”) besides absolutely kooky tracks featuring tinkling xylophone, ghoulish singing and wailing creatures (“S-K-E-L-E-T-O-N”). It’s Nightmare Before Christmas with no stops, and while perfect for basic mood-setting, has enough humorous meat to sub in for your usual podcast while you go about your chores—dishes, laundry, carving your pumpkins.

A while back, City Weekly reported on the return of shows to the iconically drafty stage of Kilby Court—and that draft just might make for one of the safer options for spending Halloween night out and about. Though tricks are not guaranteed, there will be the treat of three nights leading up to Halloween full of local talent, all for the benefit of the beloved all-ages venue. A pair of very adult acts will join forces on Thursday, Oct. 29, by way of the band Adult Prom and the solo act Super Young Adult. The former has been busy releasing low and easy singles like “Baby, You’re a Star!” and the especially sultry “We” throughout this summer; those tunes will find a foil in the zanier offerings of Super Young Adult, who’s also been dabbling in chill wave with his side project Cop Kid. Following that on Friday, Oct. 30 will be a psychedelic set by three-piece The Fervors, with support from the soloist stylings of Elowyn (formerly of Martian Cult). While October is a month usually all about Halloween, it’s also become quite closely associated with the Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday that honors the dead. And with as much strife as there is at the border and among undocumented individuals who do reside the States, Xicanx Creative will be putting the spotlight on both the healing and celebration that are warranted for those communities. Alongside other local organizations, Xicanx is hosting a whole Day of the Dead event on Saturday, Oct. 31, starting with a Healing Walk at 6 p.m., which will begin in the Granary district at 278 W. 900 South and end at The Murals (of fallen victims of police violence on 300 W. and 800 South). As more grim news comes from the border and from ICE facilities, and immigrant communities feel the losses of loved ones, this already-significant holiday is more important than ever, not just for learning more about immigration and state violence, but for fostering community in the face of a world that keeps getting scarier. They’ll work alongside several other local community organizations to foster this night of peace, and once the group reaches The Murals there will be food and entertainment in abundance—by way of poetry, music, storytelling and other performances. After the party concludes at 10 p.m., the space will open up to a DJ and dancing—yeah, that thing we used to do before the pandemic. Super Secret, Super Spreading, Suicide Prevention Co-opters Throw a “Protest Party”

About a month ago, Provo made a big splash in the news for being the site of one of the youngest and dumbest parties since the pandemic started— an alcohol-free, anti-COVID-conscious, un-social distanced free-for-all of a dance party of idiotic proportions that could only be conceived of by sober Mormon kids. Now, there’s a group trying to one-up the organizers of the Young/Dumb party company (yes that’s their real name) with their attempt to host “Utah’s largest Halloween party this year,” featuring the artists Jared Woodlief, Branden Estrada, Oorb and Justin Reid. Put on by the mysteriously new Utah Tonight, they are “the silent majority, bringing people together for a good time because it’s the healthy thing to do,” rationalizing the event in Instagram posts as a mental health-focused affair with suicide prevention at its center—though why these party-throwers feel so concerned about suicide prevention conveniently in time for one of the wildest holidays of the year feels suspect. If one hasn’t found ways to connect with the mentally ill people in one’s life outside of partying over the past eight months of the pandemic, why does their mental health now hinge on a Halloween party? Although they’ve also published messages encouraging their attendees to wear masks, their self-identification as the “silent majority” doesn’t grant much faith that anyone will actually be doing that.

There’s also the fact that they’ve kept the location secret until Halloween day—probably to avoid being shut down—though it’s rumored that the spot will be between SLC and Provo. While there are many reasons to be wary of events like this, it’s probably not worth arguing with those still determined to deny the pandemic and its dangers in favor of keeping their social lives young, dumb and boring. So rather, if you know anyone going to this supersecret super-spreader event, here’s your reminder to stay away from them for two weeks afterwards—and wear a mask if you end up leaving your house for a hopefully smaller event.

Hip Hop Education and Resource Center has one more resource for DJs in particular to tuck into their tool belt with their Turntablism classes. The DJ-centric series of classes start on Tuesday, Nov. 3 and run through Nov. 25 as a four week program offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with a limit of four people per class. The turntable series joins a wide variety of classes on all things hip hop, including break dancing and choreography and basic intro to Hip Hop classes. Turntablism, though (which is priced at $75 for the four week period) caters specifically to the DJ set, aimed at those ages 12 and up, though anyone with a basic familiarity with turntable equipment and DJ software is welcome, as long as they want to learn more about the craft that gives music to the whole culture around hip hop. The class will be taught by a pair of local DJs—DJ Lamp Shady and DJ Skratchmo to be specific. Throughout its run, the course will go through the basic and advanced techniques behind scratching, looping and juggling tracks. And while of course the DJ scene is a bit quiet due to the pandemic, that doesn’t mean it’s still not worthwhile to invest in the craft and get better while there’s time to practice—after all, once folks can go out and safely dance again, the market will be ripe for those who can provide the tunes. Alongside its sister venue Kilby Court, Urban Lounge will be hosting a number of shows in the days leading up to All Hallow’s Eve. In what may be one of the last seasonally possible outdoor gigs of the year, Urban hosts a few of their summer staple bands, a few local classics and even a tribute to the Punk Rock Halloween spirit. That last theme is first up, on Thursday, Oct. 29, by way of Grunge Fest, featuring the talents of local bands EchoField and Holy Revolver at 7 p.m. EchoField, who deal in Swervedriverish hard shoegaze, will be bending their guitars towards a different kind of ‘90s rock, specifically that of Nirvana.

They’ll find support in Holy Revolver, who, though their cover theme is TBA, certainly already deal in a ‘90s alt rock style perfect for the night. Following that, Friday, Oct. 30 will find both late and early showtimes to catch Pixie & The Party Grass Boys, at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Their late set will then shift tone entirely at 9 p.m., with performances

by Major Tom & The Moon Boys alongside Cera Gibson.

If you haven’t caught one of the many times Major Tom and his loony boys have played this summer—often at S&S’s Concert Cruises—then you won’t know that they’re the cover band to end all cover bands Bowie-wise, making them perfect for the season of costumes and mirth.

Finally, on Halloween itself, long-time SLC band Starmy plays starting at 6 p.m. with added support from one particular one-man-band-to-watch, Jacob T. Skeen and another TBA artist. A home film festival of movies where politicians don’t suck.

H

ere we are, in that fragile liminal space between the end of Halloween season and the end of election season. You’ve watched every possible horror movie on your list, and you’ve reached the end of your rope waiting for the end of the chaos when the votes are finally all counted. Maybe what you really need is a sense of optimism—movies not about how scarily broken American politics can be, but what it looks like when decent people have a chance to turn the wheels of power. Here’s a list of options you can program for your own home film festival about politicians doing a little bit of good in the world.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington: It’s almost a cliché, even for those who have never seen it, to talk about Frank Capra’s 1939 tale of idealistic Senate appointee Jefferson Smith (Jimmy Stewart) as a sentimental fantasy.

But like many other Capra films, it’s got more of an edge than its reputation suggests, up to and including the famous filibuster scene in which Smith seems on the verge of working himself to death to do the right thing.

Additionally, it ends on a note that we’d all like to see: a corrupt Senator finally realizing the terrible things he’s been doing, and having enough shame and decency to admit that he’s been doing wrong.

the place when Trump was hospitalized for COVID-19. Much like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, it’s a story about someone placed in a position of consequence because others, specifically in this case the White House chief of staff (a wonderfully villainous Frank Langella), think he’s a patsy who can be manipulated easily to do the bidding of power brokers. Instead, we get a look at what it looks like when someone pretending to be the president behaves like the kind of President we all wish we had.

The American President: Before he created The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin took his first visit to a principle-driven administration with this Rob Reiner-directed romantic comedy, with Michael Douglas as a widowed Commander-in-Chief whose relationship with a lobbyist (Annette Bening). Not surprisingly, since this is a script by Aaron Sorkin, there are plenty of speeches espousing the Way Things Ought to Be, as Douglas’s president discovers a backbone it seems he had lost.

Fortunately, the satisfying romantic chemistry at the center of the story gives it a sparkle beyond the writer’s didactic tendencies.

The Contender: It might not seem at first that this one belongs with the others, but bear with me. Sure, on some level there’s a slimy politics-as-usual film over this fictional narrative about a female U.S. Senator named Laine Hanson (Joan Allen) nominated to replace a deceased Vice-President, who then has to deal with a scandal connected to possible activities when she was in college. Anchored by great performances—particularly Jeff Bridges as the President—it’s ultimately built around Sen. Hanson’s refusal to even answer the allegations against her, since they’re built around sexual Puritanism. Wishful thinking though it may be, it’s wonderful to see a female politician whose response to pearlclutching moralism by the opposition party is essentially, “Go fuck yourselves.”

sio-Cortez publicly tried to deflect the idea that this 2019 documentary was all about her, but let’s be real here: It kind of is. Nominally, Rachel Lears follows four progressive women presenting primary challenges to establishment Democrats in Congress during the 2018 election cycle. All three of the others get time to explain why they’re mounting seemingly quixotic campaigns, but the lion’s share of the screen time is devoted to AOC. And it’s easy to understand why, given her natural charisma and the fact that we all know she ultimately won her race. The film could have spent more time on what went right for Ocasio-Cortez that didn’t go right for the others, but it’s still a reminder that, even in the 21st century, idealism isn’t always doomed to lose in American politics. If you don’t know by now, I’m a bona fide history geek. When I’m getting ready to list a really old home, I love to research tidbits about the original owners that might bring a smile to potential buyers or even imply there might be ghosts in the closets. Maybe this was the house of the shoemaker of Brigham Young’s third wife or the location of the stable where Mormondom’s “destroying angel,” Porter Rockwell, kept his horses.

I’ve listed the home of Earl Glade, Salt Lake’s longest serving mayor (in office from 1944 to 1956) who helped turn KSL into a commercial enterprise of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by broadcasting from his home on Highland Drive. I represented the Avenues estate of the late painter, Edie Roberson, where she created her fanciful art, and I was happy to point out hidden permanent art she’d made part of the home.

Recently , I was appointed to serve on Salt Lake City’s Historic Landmarks Commission, where I will volunteer with fellow commissioners to help determine if a property is worth saving or should be demolished. I served eight years on the city’s Planning and Zoning commission and now look forward to helping sort out property issues again.

Old buildings, no matter what their condition, have been a witness to history, and they connect us to the past. A sense of place has been etched into them that cannot be replaced by stucco boxes. When we save historic properties, we save a piece of our culture, our city’s soul.

I picked up clients the other day to see condos downtown, and they commented upon what they thought was the ugliest skyscraper in Salt Lake: the vacant Public Safety Building on the corner of 200 South and 300 East. It sits tagged and run down with several unsheltered people sleeping in the alcove of the front entry. Built in 1958 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, it is considered as one of the finest examples of “corporate international style’ buildings west of the Mississippi. Originally erected by Northwest Pipeline and built by contractors Del Webb, using steel from Lehi’s Geneva Steel, the building featured new (at the time) heatresistant glass and aluminum louvers to shade windows on the south and west sides.

It will take millions to remove the asbestos inside plus millions more to remodel and update it for commercial use or possibly low-income housing. The owner, Salt Lake City Corp., has announced no plans since it was presented to the public in 2015. Should this building be preserved? A building on Main and 400 South from the same era (1955) was saved from the wrecking ball in 2007, rehabilitated and updated and now is owned by the Ken Garff Group.

Inexplicable Customs officials at the Jacksonville (Florida) International Mail Facility came across a package from Hungary on Oct. 14 that contained more than 200 equine bones—a complete horse skeleton, United Press International reported. Daniel Alonso, acting director of field operations for Customs and Border Protection in Miami, tweeted a photo of the skeleton with the caption: “No horsing around this Halloween.” Because the package did not have a required veterinary services permit, he said it would not be sent to its destination.
