Opinion, May 7, “You’re Fired”

I’m a longtime reader, going back to when I moved to Park City in 2004.

Having started my own underground newspaper in high school in 1968, at age

15, I’ve followed the evolution from underground to alternative press over the years.

My younger brother edited the Vermont Vanguard Press in Burlington for many years in the ’80s and then edited and later was publisher of Connecticut’s New Haven/Hartford Advocate papers until Tribune bought them and ruined the business plan.

players who’ve done a lot of good and didn’t seen either arrogant or selfish to me. And I don’t even care for tennis.

But I do love baseball, and the Texas Rangers had a shortstop by the name of Toby Harrah. Those few of us named Toby tend to remember things like that.

As for hockey, the strategies are not that different from basketball or, for that matter, soccer.

when on defense. And, of course, scoring. They play as a true team unit, with set plays and the ability to jump up and improvise to take advantage of defensive lapses by the other team. And, yes, hockey fans are by far the most passionate and vocal.

Baseball is more individual in a lot of ways, like the batter/pitcher matchup, but there’s definitely a team aspect to it, as fielders adjust their positioning from batter to batter and even pitch to pitch, as the situation evolves.

And if you can watch from high above, every time a ball is hit into play,

watching how all nine defensive players move according to the situation, it is a thing of beauty.

And golf ? The participants are more likeable? Than who?

So, we went. Outside the bar, we huddled and cautioned each other not to ogle because whoever came in would certainly be a big star and just like us, they needed their private time. Once inside, it was clear that if privacy were sought, privacy was gotten because no one was there except us and some guy playing pinball. The guy playing pinball was either Jim Belushi or Brian-Doyle Murray. I only remember it was the brother of someone famous, and I chose them. And it doesn’t matter at all because this is all just a long introduction as to who it wasn’t: It wasn’t Bill Murray.

At the same time, I was in the secret club—and Bill Murray wasn’t—he was starring in the movie Stripes. I’ll always recall the motivational speech given by Murray to his fellow sloppy band of recruits before their graduation march, where he said, “We’re all very different people. We’re not Watusi. We’re not Spartans. We’re Americans with a capital A, huh! You know what that means, don’t you? That means our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We’re the wretched refuse. We’re the underdogs. We’re mutts!”

Few truer words were ever spoken. I’m just now watching the U.S. Senate taking testimony from an underdog, Dr. Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force—a man loved or reviled predicated upon whichever you trust more with your life, medical science or the contents of a common bleach bottle. Fauci’s credentials include being the leader of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Moments ago, Fauci was questioned by a mutt, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, himself a dubiously certified doctor. If you’re a member of the political left, you witnessed Fauci patiently dissect Paul with calm fact, reason and science. If you’re an adherent of the

political right, you saw Paul stand up to the Man, speak for all Americans who think surviving coronavirus is not worth the hassle and who just want to enter Costco without a facemask.

If he had starred in the movie Stripes, Rand Paul would’ve been cast as the unlikeable, smarmy, military officer who refuses to believe he is not better than everyone else. Unlike the troopers surrounding Murray during his movie speech, Paul is impervious to the truth that he, too, derives of bloodlines that couldn’t cut it in Europe. Paul is afraid of that truth and refuses to embrace it lest he have to admit he is also a common man, though he can’t ever be one. Paul is nothing without his ever-present arrogance, for it is downright arrogant for a failed eye doctor like himself to say to Fauci, “I don’t think you’re the end all. I don’t think you’re the one person who gets to make a decision” Fauci responded that he is a medical scientist and doesn’t make economic decisions. Fauci also reminded Paul that it was too early to tell if persons in meat-packing plants who have recovered from COVID-19 can safely return to work and that no one is certain if children are immune from contracting the virus—especially given the alarming news from New York City pointing exactly opposite.

Between those two we all have to decide if it’s safe to go back to “normal.” I’ve spent the past two months in Salt Lake City, and nothing is normal. Nor will it be until it’s 1981 again. Americans don’t want stats. Americans want their health, freedom, truth and safety. Other countries have that during this crisis. We are failing. We need Bill Murray to remind us that although we are all wretched refuse, we are all Americans with a capital A, and it’s time to pull together because sure as hell, our dear leader in the White House is fully incapable of doing that. n 1981, during my all-too-brief time as a Chicago resident, I was introduced to many things: Blues music.

Steve Goodman. The word “yuppie.” Chicago dogs.

Deep dish pizza. A new disease called “Gay cancer,” later to be known as AIDS. I saw my first alternative newspaper, Chicago Reader. I could easily walk to Wrigley Field, so I did, to see the Cubs. I learned about public housing. I ate my first chocolate-dipped strawberry.

I worked for a country music magazine called CountryStyle, so I’d flit all over town in my Levi’s 501s, a denim shirt and a really pretty Charlie One Horse cowboy hat. I was considered a fine country swing dancer in a couple of the trendy country bars that had sprung up through the city on the heels of the Urban Cowboy movie craze, on the simple predication that I didn’t need dance lessons. My job even led me to have a couple VO and waters with Mickey Gilley, whose legendary Texas nightclub helped launch Chicago’s fondness for all things John Travolta and Debra Winger. It was a fun time to be in Chicago.

Among the places I never entered, though, was Second City, the famous improv comedy club on Wells Street that launched the careers of John Candy, Eugene Levy, Chris Farley, Gilda Radner and two sets of brothers: John and Jim Belushi and Bill and Brian-Doyle Murray. I must have walked by Second City a dozen times and never entered.

However, one night, some new friends—most certainly introduced to me at a brie and white wine tasting somewhere in Old Town or Lincoln Park—announced they were given the password to enter a secret little bar across the street from Second City, supposedly owned and frequented by

Keeping Track

We’re not sure of the connection between sports reporting and virus tracking, but The Salt Lake Tribune picked the right person for the job. Andy Larsen, who covered the Utah Jazz before there was nothing to cover, has been digging deep on the COVID-19 issue since Utah began seeing infections rise. And if you don’t read his reports, you should. He uses charts and graphs (created by Christopher Cherrington) but manages to put the confusing array of information in a context that fifth graders can understand. Larsen hasn’t been particularly glowing about the state’s role in virus protection, but he does give props to the state epidemiologist, Angela Dunn. “Her regular news conferences have been straightforward and informative,” he says. This week, he ran through preexisting conditions among COVID-19 patients. While no one knows what the “other” category means, diabetes beat everything, with cardiovascular and chronic pulmonary diseases close behind. Strikingly, (current) smokers didn’t make the cut, and Larsen wonders why obesity wasn’t tracked.

In the hard-copy newspaper, he refers to an online map where you can find your neighborhood rate, but these interactive maps are hard to control.

The Inclusion Center, known for its experiential learning and intentional dialogue, has cooked up a version of the Jeopardy game in this Community Gathering on Zoom. The game will be focused on the center and Camp Anytown, with breakout sessions on a key topic. “All you need to bring is yourself and a playful spirit,” organizers say.

“Whether it’s intentional or not, most of us have felt the impact of discrimination in our lives and are aware of the effects it has on our community. Moreover, each of us harbors individual biases. If we allow them to go unchecked, it’s easy to create systems that grant access to select members of our community and deny it to others.” Join them for this recurring event to foster relationships and cultivate tomorrow’s leaders during this isolating time of the pandemic.

Danger! That was the message from U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop following a report by the International Energy Agency which the Congressional Western Caucus believes points to a need for more domestic mining and processing. “The global pandemic has demonstrated significant supply chain weaknesses across all sectors of our economy, including energy security and innovation,” Bishop told the Deseret News. Cleverly, Bishop noted that clean energy often requires minerals that are becoming scarce, and gee, we need to open a lot of new mines. But think about it. Creating a country that goes it alone for minerals will take a long time, fraught with resource and political potholes. Perhaps this report really calls for a fresh diplomatic eye on global cooperation. Just sayin’.

Gov. Gary Herbert is conducting interviews now for a key position on the Utah Public Service Commission. The PSC regulates utilities, like Rocky Mountain Power, and sets Utah’s energy goals, and this open seat could affect you as a consumer. The Utah Sierra Club is endorsing Sophie Hayes, an energy expert and staff attorney at Western Resource Advocates who “understands the West’s complex energy landscape and the importance of justly transitioning to clean energy to save our climate and environment,” the Sierra Club says. On the front page of the physical Deseret News, we learned that “legislators” are trying to raise awareness of virus testing in underserved communities. That’s technically true, but substantially misleading. The legislators being hailed are all Democrats and mostly women of color. It’s all about health disparities and the sad fact that the COVID-19 virus is affecting minority communities—and particularly Latinos—particularly hard. Rep. Angela Romero, D-Salt Lake City, and her five colleagues partnered with health organizations to organize “the first in a series of testings events” in these communities. Not to disparage the D-News, but that headline was a bit misleading until you visited the online edition, which specified “racial minority” legislators. And online, the story was anything but the lead article. According to American Public Media Research Lab, COVID-19 mortality rates for black Americans are currently 2.3 times higher than for Latinos and Asians, and 2.6 times higher than for whites.

Pardew says that the virtual adventures have been a great success, including drawing business from Europe, where “we had done nothing prior to coronavirus.” But one key element for Pardew is that these games provide an opportunity to connect people who might not have been able to share a fun experience even before the pandemic.

“We had a grandma and grandpa from Salt Lake City able to play with their daughter and grandchildren in Boston,” he says. “The grandparents weren’t the most astute at technology, but we did it, and it was heartwarming to bring them together. Even past coronoavirus, this offers some great opportunities to bring people separated by distance together.” (Scott Renshaw)

Nearly two months after live theater was forced to shut down for the pandemic, most companies are still determining what comes next.

For James Parker—executive director of The Parker Theatre (parkertheatre.org), formerly Children’s Theatre of Utah—the announcement that some businesses could reopen in early May sparked a rapid response. “When we heard that things could open up,” Parker says, “we looked at it and thought, ‘Theaters are trying to figure out how to do what they do normally.

And that’s very difficult.’”

Instead, Parker Theatre quickly developed an alternative. The result is Corona Conundrum, a 40-minute showcase of short, family-friendly skits and sketches opening May 15, focused around the unique challenges of this time, from online dating in a time of social distancing to the perils of toilet paper shortages—all written, rehearsed and produced in approximately 13 days. “We understand that it’s a serious thing, and we don’t want to be overly irreverent,” Parker says. “But there’s this funny human behavior going on, and we’re feeling bizarre and out of sorts.”

The short running time was designed

to help people feel better getting back out into a theater, and that’s one of many protocols put in place to facilitate a safe production, from the set design for the actors—often placing them on separate platforms—to reduced seating capacity and lack of physical tickets changing hands. Nevertheless, Parker acknowledges feeling nervous about being the first local theater to test the waters, and whether people will come. “Somebody has to break the ice, right?,” he says. “We don’t know if people feel comfortable yet, but it’s like, let’s break the ice now.” (SR)

Sherman Oaks, Calif., with his puppy, Bub, creating episodes for his podcast and watching “A LOT of TV and movies.” He acknowledges being nervous getting back on stage after a long layoff, “but anything is better than telling jokes via Skype.”

As for whether he will incorporate new material about the pandemic into his act, Dye says, “I think it’s always good to address something of this magnitude. You almost have to. I wouldn’t ever joke about the deaths, but I think there’s a lot of room to joke about the things we are all going through.” (SR)

A mostly-outdoor venue like Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter in Park City might be a prime candidate to re-launch as Utah re-opens parts of the state economy.

Indeed, more than 10 miles of trails on the north side of the preserve are open to the public, keeping in mind social distancing guidelines. For now, however, most of the preserve’s other programs and facilities remain closed until around June 1, according to Hunter Klingensmith, visitor experience coordinator for Swaner.

That doesn’t mean that you can’t still take advantage of the knowledge and experience provided by Swaner Preserve’s programming.

“One of the first things that we did [during the pandemic] was, we sent out a community needs assessment survey,” says Klingensmith. “We found out that most people who responded were interested in online programming, things that people could be doing while they’re home.”

The resulting virtual workshops have been quite successful, according to Klingensmith, with as many as 75-170 people registering either to watch live or at a later time.

Swaner Preserve Virtual Classes

Jeff Dye @ Wiseguys For most of the past two months, live-and-in-person entertainment has been pretty hard to come by.

But with the early May relaxation of some statewide restrictions, people will gradually have chances to enjoy live performances again—with Wiseguys Comedy among the first venues to invite guests back.

Wiseguys locations at The Gateway and in Ogden re-opened during the first week of May, welcoming local, regional and touring comedians back at a time when we all need laughs. According to a Facebook post by Wiseguys owners Keith and Noelle Stubbs, the clubs are instituting a variety of precautionary guidelines to increase the safety of guests, including limited seating capacity, allowing 6 feet of room between seated tables, checking temperatures of all guests, increasing disinfecting and using only disposable menus and plates.

A return to the stage is a welcome change for comedians like Last Comic Standing alum Jeff Dye, who headlines at Wiseguys Gateway May 15-16, 7 p.m. & 9:30 p.m. (wiseguyscomedy.com). According to Dye, he’s been spending his quarantine in

Plenty of businesses involved in live entertainment were forced to start from scratch when rethinking how to create a business model that would work during a pandemic. Fortunately for Mystery Escape Room, according to owner Les Pardew, their business already had an infrastructure in place. “We developed our first virtual Escape Room three years ago,” Pardew says.

lent being meeting your needs,” she says.

“Then you eat of the Tree of Knowledge and it’s like, ‘Oh my God.’ … That’s a problem we have not just in adolescence, but into adulthood. That’s always what the arc is: moving from some sort of innocence to some sort of knowledge, and what do you do then. How do you go forward with your new knowledge?”

The new knowledge of this moment is that few of the old models apply, especially when it comes to something like promoting a new book. Zarr notes that she had done a book-release event at The King’s English Bookshop for all of her previous novels, but it soon became clear that such an event wouldn’t be possible. “I initially felt a lot of personal energy around, ‘I’ll do some Facebook Live and live Twitter chats,’” she says, “then quickly all the other authors started doing the same thing. I’d go to other people’s chats and see seven or eight people there. It felt like grasping at something to make you feel in control, but in reality, it wasn’t going to save your book’s sales figures.”

That world has changed, but Zarr acknowledges that for a full-time writer, the world has changed a bit less than it has for most. “Personally, I like a lot of time alone,” she says. “I am an introvert, I’ve been working at home for 10 or 12 years. So I haven’t been dealing with any extra ‘how do I structure my time?’ problems. I’ve actually had those problems the whole time.

“What I feel is missing is going to coffee shops and libraries, and writing there, or just getting out of the house. I miss being alone in a public place.” CW

their grandma’s farm. But because I’m me, I then though, what if it’s teens, and one of their parents is going through a divorce.

She said, ‘Wow, that escalated quickly.’”

After the relatively intimate setting of her previous novel, Gem & Dixie, Zarr adds, “I was really wanting to stretch my arms a little bit and imagine a big cast of characters, a big family. I’ve always loved those kinds of multigenerational big family stories. Initially, my first draft was basically from all nine cousins’ points of view. And you could just never get anywhere, because it was just … a lot.”

With help from her editor, she came to focus on Kyle—which provided the unique challenge to Zarr of writing her first male main character. Goodbye from Nowhere also features an asexual/aromantic character— Kyle’s cousin Emily, who is also his closest friend—which offered another challenge of crafting a character with an identity not typically represented in young-adult literature. “I get why it can be problematic, especially for authors with white privilege to feel like they can coopt every single narrative that exists,” she says. “I think I would have felt [pressure] if it was [Emily’s] point of view, or primarily inside her head. Kyle is perceiving everything only insomuch as it relates to his needs and his experience. … That’s the arc of this story: Kyle moving from centering his life on his own direct experiences to realizing there’s a lot of context to other people’s lives.”

That emotional awakening is central to most of Zarr’s work, and the key to what attracts her to young-adult fiction as a genre.

“Coming-of-age stories are so much like the Adam and Eve story: You’re sort of innocent in this world, where everything is given to you, and there’s this benevo-

here’s a bit of an irony to releasing a novel centered around big, rambunctious family gatherings in a time of social distancing. Then again, there’s virtually nothing about this time that feels normal, including for authors trying to get their books out into the world.

Goodbye from Nowhere—the new novel from Utah author and National Book Award finalist Sara Zarr (The Story of a Girl)—centers on Kyle Baker, a California teenager whose life and relationships are thrown into chaos when he learns that his mother has been having an affair with a married man. The events play out over the course of a year, with several key sequences involving holiday and summer family reunions at the Northern California farm owned by Kyle’s grandparents.

Zarr traces the origins of the story back to a writer’s retreat several years ago, and a conversation with another writer about that writer’s family history. “She’s like a younger, cool grandma … and she said something about ‘cousin camp’ with the grandkids every summer,” Zarr says. “I just thought, that would be a fun setting for a kids’ book, about cousins get together on

Get out of your head and into a meat pie from Sagato’s Bakery

R

ight about now, we’re all aching for a taste of something that has the power to whisk us away to a sun-drenched island or vibrant beach community on the other side of the world. This is where the coconut-dusted lamingtons and golden brown meat pies of Sagato Bakery (44 W. 7200 South, 385-557-1728, sagatofoods.com) come in. This Midvale bakery has a menu that pulls liberally from the island cultures around Australia, New Zealand and Samoa, making it perfect graband-go summer soul food for times when a little bit of sociallyresponsible escape becomes a high priority—or when you just need to consume a huge pile of kalua pork.

We have Loi and Tualagi Sagato to thank for bringing these delicious flavors together under one roof. Along with their five children, the Sagatos made a name for themselves selling steamed buns and shortbread from a table in Kearns Park and setting up vendor stands at various festivals and markets around Salt Lake. Over the years, the family saved enough

money to open the warm and welcoming storefront that has been serving the Midvale community for the past few years.

I had Instagram-stalked Sagato for a few months before they opened—images of gravy-filled meat pies and caramelized pani popo (a Samoan sweet roll made from coconut custard) lured me right in. Something about a lightly-

browned pastry crust that gives way to a medley of meat and veggies has been integral to my happy place, so I was thrilled to give them a try once they opened.

Their selection of meat pies ($5.45$5.78) is deliciously ample, from ground beef—or mincemeat, as New Zealanders would say—and cheddar cheese to chicken with potatoes, carrots and peas. You can’t really go wrong with anything from this part of the menu, but if you’re after true “grandma’s buttery home cooking” bliss, the steak and mushroom pie is perfection. It throws the crowdpleasing combo of steak and mushrooms in with a thick brown gravy, all of which melts in your mouth in a pleasant, Sunday dinner kind of way.

The sausage roll ($4.35) and the kekepua’a ($3.25) are variations on the theme of meat-stuffed pastry. Despite their unassuming appearances, these two pack a lot of filling flavor for under five bucks—consume with caution. Anyone familiar with pigs in a blanket will recognize the sausage roll’s basic structure, but I’d be willing to bet you’ve never had a sausage quite like this one. It’s a mixture of ground beef and pork, seasoned and linked in-house. Familiar notes of black pepper and garlic welcome your tongue to the party, but the more you

eat, the more unique these sausages get. The kekepua’a is a steamed bun as big as your head, stuffed with marinated pork. This is the ultimate hike or picnic tagalong, since they come pre-packaged in plastic wrap and offer energy for days. Don’t be surprised when you get full after getting halfway through one, however.

For those looking for something more akin to a feast than a quick lunch, Sagato is cooking up multimeat combo platters ($9.35-$15.35) with rice and macaroni salad. These platters can be tuned up with kalua pork, teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef or all three if you’re starving. All of the proteins are prepared and slowroasted onsite, so the flavors are incredibly fresh—and they absolutely do not skimp on the portions. I’ve noticed a lot of Hawaiian grills popping up in the wake of Mo’ Bettahs, but if that type of meat-and-macaroni cuisine is your jam, Sagato is definitely worth checking out.

Where Sagato’s savory options are designed to deliver gut punches of buttery, slow-roasted goodness, their desserts are as light and fluffy as a tropical cloudbank. For a prime example of what I mean, try a slice of their haupia ($4.35), a coconut custard cake piled high with peaks of coconut cream. Each slice is gigan-

tic, but once all those luscious layers convalesce into a feathery, slightly sweet embrace of coconut, it becomes frightfully evident that you could eat a whole cake without thinking twice.

A worthy compatriot to the haupia is Sagato’s pineapple pie ($3.85), a hand pie stuffed with a sweet and tart pineapple custard. It’s filled with summery flavor, and its convenient shape makes it another grab-and-go favorite. Finally, the Hostess Sno Ball fan in me would be heartbroken if I didn’t mention Sagato’s famous lamington ($3.85), a sponge cake dipped in chocolate, topped with chocolate ganache and dusted with coconut flakes before getting overstuffed with cream filling. It’s the rock star, and Sno Balls merely the cover band.

With a plethora of ways to place orders in our risk-level-orange pandemic climate, Sagato’s food makes an ideal dining companion for this moment in history. Whether you need to mentally project yourself beachside with some tropical desserts, or you’re longing for the comforting tastes of a simpler time, Sagato Bakery has you covered. CW

Since 1997, SAGE Utah has worked with the Utah Pride Center to build a strong support system for elderly members of the LGBTQ community that includes healthcare, housing and support groups. During the COVID-19 pandemic, SAGE Utah has moved its monthly supper club online. can pull off the flavor, this will be a winner.

It’s tart, but not overwhelmingly so; you get some lemon-lime twang with just a touch of sweetness from the malt. There’s a nice balance, and it ends dry but not too acidic, as just a touch of residual sweet malt lingers. What’s missing, however, is the tequila. There’s a touch, mainly showing up in the aftertaste, but not nearly as much as you might expect given the aroma. Still, I can live with that given the overall flavor.

The one thing that this beer isn’t lacking is the oak from said tequila barrel. It adds a nice vanilla character that changes the character entirely. In the mouth it’s acidic, light-medium in body and gently crisp. The

lingering lime note is very nice. Had the tequila come through more in the flavor, it actually might not have worked as well for me as it ended up. I’m finding the woody vanilla flavors to be very complementary to the salt and lime.

Quarantine Desirability Rating: When this beer was born, it was 4 percent, but its time in the barrel has boosted up to 5.1 percent. Thus, its cloistering factor is also in the medium-to-low territory. However, it did give me a head-swirling dream of being locked up in a Mexican jail with Carl Sagan. I still find myself talking like him when I order Taco Bell: “Star Stuff.”

’m a social drinker, always have been.

I love to be with friends or strangers in neutral territory to simply decompress together. Cloisterfuck 2020 has robbed me of this somewhat, but it’s also given me a better appreciation of the homefront side of things. This week’s selections turned out to be excellent confinement aids to help take your mind off of that ass groove you’ve created on the couch.

RoHa High on the Hop: At first, I thought this beer was a bit of a fail when I was taking photos of it. For a “hazy” IPA, this wasn’t very cloudy. Then I took another look, and found that it’s a “lazy” IPA— which has “me” written all over it. The nose is somewhat tropical—there’s some

pineapple and mango—before it slides into melon with some vague berry notes. It’s not pungent, but fruity and herbaceous comes to mind.

As I swig away, everything the nose hints at becomes fulfilled. I get the pineapple and mango briefly, then the melon kicks in—something like a green cantaloupe— before some yellow grapefruit. Those vague berries again begin to make themselves known; I wish I could nail them down, but the citrus peel bitterness keeps them out of reach. This is indicative of very little late hopping, a practice geared more towards the west IPA style or even the emerging mountain style IPAs. There is a lot of flavor here, and I am very surprised that this was achieved in a 5% ABV session IPA. Quarantine Desirability Rating: Unless you prefer your beer to taste like more of a breakfast drink, this one may not be your thing. I enjoyed this while quarantined with a pot of boiled crawdads. High on the Hop took me from down in the dumps to having a cool time. Its cloistering factor is medium to low, and it took me on an adventure with one of my new boiled crawdad buddies. I subsequently made friends with said crawdad and hung out with him. Man, I miss Crawford.

We were ending, and in some ways beginning, a stressful part of our lives just before COVID-19 and the quarantine hit. For us, the quarantine has helped strip away some of the superficial parts of our lives, allowing us to grow closer as a couple and a family—we wouldn’t want to quarantine with anyone else. Together, we’ve found a way to continue our commitment to the community by organizing the assembly and distribution of thousands of face masks for those who are homeless. We do this work because it’s important for all of us to remember that we are in this together.

I miss having peace of mind. Trying to find a safe balance between my personal and professional self haunts me.

I was prepared in every way except emotionally. I had food, gas, alternate power and finances—but at the end of the third week of quarantine and self isolation, I felt I was losing it. Found myself with tears sobbing for no apparent reason.

In the end, I guess I would point to this T-shirt in 10 years time and explain that we went into 2020 with wide-eyed rainbow optimism and excitement, but it becamed a year that opened our eyes and ripped off our rainbow-colored glasses.

COVID-19, and the events surrounding it, stomped all over the dreams, hopes and lives of so many people—and that deserves a little rage and fury.

And yet, even in that feeling of anger, I will be reminded of the people, neighbors and friends who through chalk drawings on the sidewalk, teddy bears in windows, food drives for those in need and conversations shouted at a good 6-foot distance and through masks refused to let go of our collective humanity and used their proverbial middle finger to say, “Get off our rainbow, COVID-19!”

In 10 years, I suspect I am going to look back on this period with a great sense of loss, pain and confusion. I wonder if I will still have this Tshirt and whether I can pull it out of a cupboard to reflect on the experience. In 10 years’ time, if we get back to something “normal,” it will be difficult to describe how quickly life changed and how that sense of uncertainty prevailed over every decision you made or over every social interaction that you had.

I will try to describe how the simple acts of shaking hands, going in for a hug or just sharing time and space with friends and colleagues were suddenly frowned upon and discouraged. How walking through a supermarket went from mundane everyday behavior to one where people’s eyes didn’t meet and there was a palpable sense of disconnect between shoppers themselves and those people expected to work through the pandemic. I would have to describe how COVID-19 exposed the lie of “trickle-down economics” and

laid bare the visible inequality between people, groups and marginalized demographics.

In 10 years, I would have to describe how COVID-19 affected the place I worked and loved being in with my community. The Utah Pride Center had to move its largest and most significant fundraising event—the Utah Pride Festival— which provides the funding for our life-saving work. We had to close our doors to communities who came in always knowing that there was a safe space and a friendly face and ear for them. I will speak with great admiration about the staff of people who, seemingly overnight, moved our resources, programs and services online and kept connecting with our community members and kept being a resource for those in need. I would have to describe some of the worst days of my career as I had to lay off friends, admired colleagues and longtime staff in order to best preserve our financial resources and plan for our center’s future in this time of uncertainty.

I am normally a warrior for my business. I can take on any scary thing. Honestly, I feel like I have taken on many scary things, but this threw me so far into outer space, I had no way to plan or navigate a plan.

The last eight weeks have been constant plan re-evaluation. I couldn’t guess how this would or will end, if my business would be able to reopen, if I could keep my people paid, etc. What the hell do we do?

That’s the challenge.

COVID 19 is a powerful teacher. Mother Nature’s pedagogy of melancholy and hope.

I’ve spent my quarantine settling into this discomfort. I’m learning how to better cook, where I source food, how animals are treated in factory farms and what I place into my body. I’m expressing more gratitude for the people I love and the art humans create. I’m driving less.

CAMILA afraid of running out of food for my boys

This experience was eye-opening in how much our society normalizes a busy lifestyle. We were all so used to constantly going that at the end of the day, things that truly matter were under-prioritized. We failed to see the impact that small gestures, conversations and interactions with others make in our daily lives. I know I am not the only one coming out of this with a better understanding and gratitude for humanity.

There’s a feeling of loneliness and fear of what’s to come, especially when everyone was panic buying.

Also, the fear of running out of food for my boys—going to the stores seeing all the shelves empty, and everyone in a sense of panic—was terrifying.

I miss music, dancing and feeling free with everyone just vibing to the music.

I learned how resilient I am and how much love I have for my boys! I have many great people in my corner! Being a single mom can feel very isolating regardless of a pandemic. This time has really made it apparent we are not alone—we are loved by many.

Alicia is an ICU nurse in Ogden who’s thus far worked with eight COVID-19 patients on ventilators. She doesn’t consider herself any sort of hero, but we beg to differ. Sure, she chose this career, but she also chose not to quit. She wears a mask and a shield all day, but here’s the face patients don’t get to see: I chose a career in health care, and I’ve been dedicated to it for 28-plus years. I’m not afraid or concerned to go to work at the hospital. My employer has provided me with all the necessary education and personal protection equipment (PPE) to keep me safe while I provide care to the sick and injured.

What’s been the most emotionally exhausting question has been how do I keep my loved ones safe?

Does my choice to continue to work put my husband and my 2 1/2-year-old daughter at risk? I can isolate from everyone else, but what about them?

My husband and I had to create a plan based on the unknown and the ‘what ifs.’ Even though I take all necessary precautions, is it enough? Do I move out? Self isolate? How do I protect my family and at what cost?

What I have missed the most during the pandemic is not being able to give love and affection to my husband and daughter. It is heartbreaking to have my toddler reaching and crying for me to pick her up for hugs and kisses but being unable to because I have been at work. She is too young to understand and hopefully, to young to remember.

Camping Virtually

Salt Lake City’s Rock Camp takes its mission to support the creativity of marginalized youth online.

he bustling noise of nightlife and live music has been replaced by an eerie silence that now fills the many venues and bars of Salt Lake. Not only are there no concerts to attend, but many non-profit music camps serving kids have shut their doors for safety as well. While the physical venues and buildings may be vacant, live music and its inviting spaces are very much alive—if you know where to look. Local musicians have gotten creative about how to connect with others musically, and have a message to share: The space is still there, and we are here to stay.

This June would have marked the fifth year for Rock Camp SLC running its week-long music camp for marginalized and underrepresented youth. The camp, like many other events and festivals, has been canceled this year in a conscious effort to keep people safe. This is particularly tragic, because Rock Camp SLC is much more than just a music camp; it is a safe space for marginalized youth to be encouraged, to be heard, and to gain positive mentorship in music-making. Many of the non-profit program’s volunteers are women, transgender and gender-expansive—just like the campers themselves—contributing to an environment that fosters creativity, self-confidence and empowerment.

While the physical camp itself will not be running, however, the program isn’t totally canceled. Talia Keys—Rock Camp’s music director and a local musical powerhouse—has gotten creative about how to run elements of the program virtually. “Camp is not over,” Keys says. “Camp is happening, and we want to make sure kids know they have the space still.”

Normally, the camp would run for one week every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the kids would be forming their own bands. This

Rock Camp year, Rock Camp has created two days of programming planned every week via their Facebook page for the foreseeable future.

Tuesdays are “wellness” hangouts (yoga, dance, etc.); Thursdays involve a music class conducted by Keys and co-music director Hillary McDaniel. Keys has even collaborated with some kids virtually to co-write a song. “We wrote a beautiful song together called ‘What Really Matters,’” she says. “These kids are smarter than we give them credit for.”

The empowerment and connection that flows in and out of Rock Camp feels incredibly altruistic. Volunteers have said that they often come away feeling that they have learned more from the kids than the other way around. Kenzie Waldon, guitarist and frontperson for the band Slick Velveteens, says that the camp “is truly a haven for not only the campers, but the volunteers too. … I’ve never felt more empowered as a musician and a female than when the week is over and you get to watch the campers rock out on stage with full confidence.”

The camp has proven so successful and popular that campers of years past have graduated and later signed up to mentor younger attendees themselves. The kids who populate the classes of Rock Camp are “the next generation of teachers,” according to Waldron, and keeping it running is critical for them. “I truly believe Rock Camp saves lives.” says Waldon.

Keys, McDaniel and the other Rock Camp volunteers have given space to kids who need it now more than ever, and are an inspiration to fellow creatives who might be struggling, especially at this time. “What I want to express to everyone who feels down right now, is to get creative [about performing],” Keys says. “I have connected with more people across the states in the last month than I ever have on tour.”

Rock Camp will also be hosting a “virtual music festival” on May 22 - 23 to raise funds for the program to keep running. Youth bands from previous camp years will perform, along with camp volunteers and, of course, Keys herself. There are also opportunities for kids to submit a virtual performance of an original song to be showcased as part of the festival. When one hears the word “masks” these days, it probably evokes the facial apparatuses we’re all being encouraged to wear out in public. But Utah County musician Emily Merrell’s new release, Masks, is about a more metaphorical understanding of the word, and about the “masks” we wear in our lives. The idea for the album was born five years ago, when Merrell was confronting some childhood trauma, a faith crisis and issues with gender roles. “It seemed like everything in my life was turning out to be different than I had thought,” Merrell says. “I felt like ‘masks’ was an absolutely necessary topic for me to tackle with my next project.” What started out as a musical meditation on the “masks we wear” became, she says, “a whole interactive performance-art series using email and web design as a medium, itself,” which found its final release on May 8 under the title The Masks Experience. “I wanted to think of ways to invite the listener/ viewer to participate creatively directly in the project,” says Merrell, and that goal resulted in not just music, but a website full of colorful, “secret” Easter-egg-like pages, creative activities like coloring books or her “Mask of the Day” feature. HUM’s New Archive Supports Artists

At the beginning of the pandemic, we wrote about how HUM—Hearing Utah Music, the archival local music program at the SLC Public

Emily Merrell Library—was working to make music more accessible to locals stuck at home. Now, the archive—which accepts local music submissions twice a year, before selecting and purchasing both physical and digital copies for their collection—has a new batch of selected local music to share with the public. Published to the HUM site at the beginning of May, this newest batch features a few more selections than normal. That’s because the library generously made room in its budget to purchase more albums and EPs from local artists than they usually would, in an attempt to support more local artists left struggling during this crisis. Among the newcomers to the collection are the sweet solo wanderings of Peachy Fingernail, Indie-rock from a Utah County staple Whisperhawk, ripping metal riffs from Provo’s Moray, traditional folk goodness from Ogden’s Branson Anderson, one of the many collected recordings from ever-active SLC pillars The 8eat1ful5s, experimentations in electronic orchestration from Salt Lake Electric Ensemble, post-punk emo goodness from St. George’s NVM and many more. Not only are all these artists valuable contributions to an archive of what Utah’s musical scene sounds like throughout the state, but are valuable members of the community in need of support. While the library has shown its belief in the value of this work through its purchases for the archive, it wouldn’t hurt to check out the links to their Bandcamp pages (on the HUM site) and buy some downloads of your own.

Ben Swisher of Sen Wisher, Ahead of His Time

While many of us are just now grappling with the strange distance of this time, and what it means to connect with the people in our lives while they’re physically unavailable to us, local musician Ben Swisher—who usually performs under the name Sen Wisher—has already had a little experience in that arena. Two summers ago, while spending a lonely stretch of time studying music in Eugene, Ore., Swisher met now-friend and ethnomusicologist Elise Cavicchi online. That meeting launched a friendship that resulted in their collaborating on an album, despite their physical distance (she lived in Pennsylvania at the time). What resulted was The June of Two Place, a 20-minute stretch of a song-slash-album, made up of scraps of found sounds and ambient meanderings stitched together by the two musicians.

The project fell by the wayside, however, as Swisher released more intensive projects. “I think when we finished this album,” Swisher says, “we weren’t sure if we should share it or not. In part because it was an experiment to see how making something with someone you don’t know well, or in real life, could furnish connection, like sharing letters.” But, two years on, as life locked down due to pandemic, The June came to mind, as even Swisher’s nearby friends felt impossibly far. “Everything is a long-distance relationship to me right now,” he says. “It’s surreal. The relativity of both distance and time is just temporarily—hopefully!— different. So I guess this album is like a letter to my future self that you can close the gap a little with collaborative music and art.” Stream

Raunch Staunchly Open

While some record stores have closed entirely to the public, Raunch Records in Sugar House is still open, albeit operating under extremely limited hours and self-regulations. With only four people allowed in at once, most sales are quickies by way of Raunch’s colorful skateboard decks, magazines or anything in the case owner Brad Collins can grab for you. Collins is prepared to stick with limited hours—Monday - Wednesday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday - Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.—despite loosened state restrictions on how businesses can operate during what Gary Herbert recently deemed a “moderate” risk status. But it’s worth the effort to stop in, if not for Raunch’s usual charmingly punk-as-hell wares, but for the face masks Collins is making available. They’re adorned with the now-iconic insignia of “RAUNCH” with what I’ve heard is “fuck you” spelled out in ASL above the lettering. There’s no better way to stroll around this apocalyptic setting than by wearing that, I’ll say. Head into Raunch via the back door, where the parking is (even during the slower times of the pandemic, trying to park out on 21st is probably still a fruitless task), head in, squirt your hands with sanitizer provided by the door and take some time to buy some goods and support this longtime SLC staple.

What got me considering the girth of local music that is Chthonic Records was strolling its rows and rows of music on Bandcamp during the last Bandcamp waived-fees day (something they’ve been dong lately in an attempt to support the small-time artists who use their sites for income, and now might exclusively rely on it for income in light of cancelled shows and tours), where I saw a very recent track (“Long Way Round”) from an ex-Utahn by the name of Sam Burton. Decamping to Los Angeles a few years ago after heading popular SLC bands like The Circulars, Burton is now on the tipping point of making it bonafide-big. His two singles on Spotify are leagues away from past DIY work, and yet refined versions of it, too, showing maturity and smacking of the same kind of folkie indie stuff that’s booming right now. My

mind wandered to the near future of Burton’s certain national acclaim, where his newfound fans won’t know his old work is peppered all over Chthonic Records’ Bandcamp—alongside tons of other SLC artists that played alongside Burton or around the same stomping grounds for years, many of whom are still creating and playing frequently. Names like Baby Pink / Katie Van Sleen, Tiffany Boulanger, Hoops, Jesus Christ and the Goddamns and the Circulars will be familiar to anyone active in the scene over the last decade. Not only are there albums by all these folks up on Chthonic, but special, warm bootleg recordings from shows at Kilby Court, DIY spot Barn Deluxxe and the Twilite Lounge live on Chthonic’s sister site, chthonicdeadhouseband.bandcamp.com. Both spots are perfect snapshots of a corner of the SLC DIY scene as it has quietly and persistently existed, and continues to. Ghosts of Relationships Past A marriage in crisis gets an overly fanciful treatment in On a Magical Night

F

antasy needs rules. That might seem counterintuitive, but creating a world where anything can happen doesn’t mean just anything can happen. A certain internal logic is needed to tamp down the chaos, to allow for the development of dramatic stakes and thematic resonance. That crazy dream you had last night might be interesting to you, but it’s rarely interesting to anyone else, because the story doesn’t stick.

Writer/director Christophe Honoré’s On a Magical Night applies a fanciful framework to the potentially heartbreaking story of a marriage in crisis. Longtime married couple Maria (Chiara Mastroianni) and Richard (Benjamin Bolay) face their turning point when Richard learns that Maria has been having an affair—and furthermore, that this was just the latest in a long string of affairs, and that she doesn’t feel particularly guilty about it. Needing time to clear her head, Maria heads out to stay at the hotel across the street from their Paris apartment, beginning a night of strange and unexpected visitations.

As those visitations begin—with the 23-year-old version of Richard (Vincent Lacoste) appearing in Maria’s room—the initial vibe of On a Magical Night is something akin to A Christmas Carol. Maria gets

a chance to consider the person she was when she first met her husband 25 years earlier, and how she became the person she is now. Mastroianni has fun with her performance—it’s not often that a woman gets to play the inveterate philanderer, let alone one who doesn’t understand what the big deal is about marital fidelity—while Honoré crafts memorable moments like Maria and Richard addressing each other from opposite sides of a snowy miniaturized version of their street.

The Dickens parallel quickly breaks down, however, as more apparitions join the party. Along comes Irène (Camille Cottin), Richard’s long-ago first love, to share the story of what Richard gave up to marry Maria. But instead of simply becoming a figure to serve Maria’s moral self-inquiry, this Irène soon shows a will of her own, heading across the street to see if it’s not too late to have a life with Richard. Then Richard himself gets to ponder whether he believes his marriage can, or even should, be salvaged. The serious meditations in the scenes between Irène and the older Richard bump oddly against sequences that feel more like farce, including the abrupt arrival of every one of Maria’s previous lovers

at the same time.

It’s not that On a Magical Night doesn’t have some wise things to say about the evolution of a romantic relationship over the years, including the role of nostalgia and the challenge of getting past an infidelity when someone wonders, “How can we talk about anything else now?” Honoré simply sacrifices focus to let his imagination run wild. As charming as his story is in individual moments, the lessons of a dream don’t matter without a sense of who needs to learn them in the real world.

that ends up feeling overstuffed, and director Michael Murphy manages just to stay on the positive side of that line. Jazz trumpeter and Spike Lee film composer Terence Blanchard narrates an overview of The Big Easy’s musical legacy that begins with the city’s unique status as a mixing place for French, Spanish, African, Native American and Caribbean cultures, and how the mixture of those cultures’ musical traditions gave birth to a peculiarly American art form. Most of what follows involves taking a few minutes each to pay respects to multiple influential figures from New Orleans— Louis Armstrong, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Earl King, Allen Toussaint—with commentary by contemporary musicians like Keith Richards, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Connick, Jr. There’s not much chance to get into depth about any of them, but when lined up end to end—accompanied by plenty of performances of the amazing songs they left behind—you get a solid lesson in what makes this one place so significant in the history of American music. Around the Wasatch Front, finding raw land to build on is about as rare as a victory for common sense! I receive frequent calls from old and young hippies who want to “find a lot in the city so we can build a tiny house, have chickens and farm.” Again, offers of buildable residentially zoned land in the tri-city area are scarce and generally swooped up by full-time investors and builders who can squeeze in highdensity townhomes (where allowed).

Two big landholders in our area are The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and mining multinational Rio Tinto. As a former planning and zoning commissioner for Salt Lake City, I recall when Rio Tinto came to present their vision for the far west side of the Salt Lake Valley. They own the land from the smelter smokestack on the north end of the Oquirrh Mountains south beyond Daybreak. As the mine ore taps out, Rio Tinto plans to build communities. Most importantly, they own the water rights to support communities like Daybreak. One employee pointed out, “By the time we’re done building, we’ll need 90 schools to support the families that will live there.”

Rio Tinto is not building the 900-acre Olympia project just west of Herriman, but their land abuts that project. Just south of Daybreak and Olympia is Camp Williams Army Base, a training site for active and reservist Utah National Guard as well as all sorts of covert and overt military specialists. The military, with cooperation of private and public landowners, is planning to put an open-space plan around certain parts of the 24,000-acre base, which is smart because again, vacant land is being bought up to build housing projects. If you drew a circle with Camp Williams in the center, the Sentinel Landscape project would have Lehi and Draper on the north, Herriman on the east, Eagle Mountain and Saratoga Springs on the west and Utah Lake to the south.

As a homeowner, you don’t want errant bullets and shells ending up in your bedroom, so it’s good to have a buffer zone such as this that will also help protect wildlife and our unique ecosystem.

If you flew northwest over the Oquirrh Range, you’d see a new Latter-day Saints temple being constructed. The church’s real-estate arm (Suburban Land Reserve), which built the City Creek project, has announced that they will now build a massive housing project of homes to surround that edifice. Why not add green space, rec areas and walking paths and housing that looks good with the temple as a focus. As I’ve also told clients over the years: If the church announces they are going to build a temple, buy any land you can around it because the value is going to skyrocket. Questionable Judgment On May 1, officials in San Diego County ordered residents to start wearing face coverings while in public to prevent the spread of COVID-19. On May 2, an unnamed man went grocery shopping at Vons in Santee, California, where a number of shoppers took photos of the man, wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood. Staff members repeatedly asked him to remove the hood, according to a company spokeswoman, but he refused until he reached the checkout area, where a supervisor caught up to him. The man removed the hood, paid for his groceries and left. Santee Mayor John Minto told the Los Angeles Times, “Santee, its leaders and I will not tolerate such behavior.”

Precocious A Utah Highway Patrol officer pulled over a car in Weber County on May 4 for “what he thought was an impaired driver,” the highway patrol said on Twitter, but instead he was shocked to find a 5-year-old in the driver’s seat. The boy told the trooper he took off in his parents’ car after arguing with his mother because she wouldn’t buy him a Lamborghini, according to United Press International. He planned to drive to California to get one for himself, but alas, “he only had $3 his wallet,” the highway patrol noted.

The Passing Parade Virginia Hamilton, 69, was charged with felonious assault in Youngstown, Ohio, on May 3 after an altercation with her live-in boyfriend. According to WKBN, the boyfriend told police she became upset about his dirty underwear in the “laundry bucket” and grabbed a butcher knife; he tried to fight back with a pocket knife he had on hand. When officers arrived, Hamilton was on the front porch, washing blood off her hands, and the boyfriend was lying on a bed inside, covered in blood, with cuts on his arms and hands. The police report also noted that alcohol was involved. Ya think?

Florida Two landscapers were charged with DUIs for driving the same vehicle at the same time in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, after police pulled over an SUV that had been reported to be driving recklessly on April 15. According to police reports, the officers spotted Alfredo Lopez Chaj, 24, behind the wheel, but by the time an officer approached the car, Chaj was standing outside it, and Martin Lopez Chaj, 20, was in the driver’s seat. The younger man, apparently a brother, had slid over from the passenger seat, put the car in gear and tried to escape, but the officer pulled him out of the car, The Palm Beach Post reported. Both men, police noted, smelled of alcohol, and both had wet their pants; neither had a valid driver’s license.

Creative Quarantine Discovery Island at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, has been closed to the public since 1999, and, of course, the park itself has been closed since mid-March because of coronavirus concerns. Once called Treasure Island, the 11-acre property sits in the park’s Bay Lake and was a pure “tropical paradise” for an unnamed interloper from Alabama, who was found camping on the island on April 30 by park security.
