ne of the damning nuances of print publications is that in this era of fast-release news on the internet and over social media, by the time someone reads what is written, it will be, as they say, yesterday’s news.

Alas, I am writing yesterday’s news today which is actually tomorrow’s news, because Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney is yet to be summarily ejected from her Republican leadership position in the U.S. House of Representatives. I’m going out on a very strong limb here, but I suspect she will indeed be ousted in favor of someone less courageous and far less honorable come Wednesday.

I would have bet a sizeable amount a couple of weeks ago that Chris Stewart, the U.S. representative for Salt Lake City’s downtown district where City Weekly’s office is located—would be in line to replace Liz. He is famously among the most cowardly and disingenuous of all U.S. representatives, making him the ideal candidate for GOP leadership. Chris is never shy about posting up his Air Force background. I didn’t think our military was comprised of men willing to so quickly sell their souls and ideals. But he has. Can you imagine if real enemies were coming for him (and us) instead of the imaginary ones he keeps yapping about on Twitter?

I would have bet an equal amount that GOP rising star Congressman Burgess Owens, who represents me in my home’s Murray district would also be in line to replace Liz. Since he began his campaign to unseat Democrat Ben McAdams, I’ve not heard a single utterance from him that didn’t demonize Democrats or liberals. His entire campaign was a tirade against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi,

which was just lazy since his Republican majority district has been well trained to believe Pelosi is the devil incarnate. Never mind that he has no original ideas, he’s their mighty gladiator chosen to fight a real warrior who entered Congress about the same time Owens was burnishing his resume as a chimney sweep. So never mind also that nothing good is going to come to Murray or any other city in his widespread district—he doesn’t seem to mind that honor is not among his attributes.

Both Stewart and Owens will not shrug the big lie that the 2020 election was rigged or stolen, and that Donald Trump was shortchanged on earning a second term. Neither is quite yet sure if they can admit that Joe Biden won the election fair and square, because neither is willing to step across their phony line of party unity. Like their party leader, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy—the guy who is behind the ouster of Liz Cheney—Owens and Stewart initially condemned the insurrection and assault on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Since then, McCarthy has done an about-face, and Owens and Stewart are radio silent.

That makes the to-do over Liz Cheney ever more egregious since she’s the last woman standing, so to speak. In a sea of brave NFL defensive backs and former pilots, she stands her ground and speaks against the former president, Donald Trump, his frauds on the republic and his near take-down of an over 200-year-old peaceful transition of power. It’s as if both Stewart and Owens don’t care what team they’re on—they just want to win the game.

Owens and Stewart are party shills who simply cannot be trusted. If this were the epic 1980 Winter Olympics hockey game between the Team USA and the Soviet Union, neither Owens nor Stewart could be counted on as a reliable goalie. They would have been as likely to let the Soviet Union score a win as not depending on what was in it for

them rather than the team. Let’s just say they couldn’t fill the skates of USA goalie Jim Craig who stopped an amazing 36 of 39 goal attempts by the Soviets. Everyone was sure the Soviets would win—and that would have been signal enough for Owens and Stewart to start hedging their talking points.

That’s where we are these days. Americans have chosen teams. It’s no longer us against the world. It’s us against us.

I look to Owens and Stewart with undignified contempt, admitting readily it’s undignified to feel the way I do about them. I don’t care if Owens played in the NFL. I don’t care that Stewart flew a jet. That’s the end of the resume of each.

They’ve done zero for me, my districts or the United States itself other than to stand steadfast with party. Owens never shows up in Murray. Stewart never shows his face in Salt Lake City. At every turn, they tweet all manner of scorn for persons like me. In nearly every tweet or press release is a backhanded swipe at my kind.

Why do they hate me so? They can say they don’t, but their words say otherwise. Their words are meant to inflict damage on me and mine, and reassure “them,” reminding the world that I’m not on their team. Has Donald Trump ever said a nice word to anyone? No. These guys play for him—he’s the coach, they use his playbook. They are him.

They keep the lie alive.

Hopefully, Liz Cheney doesn’t back down. They will torch her with many of those carrying the kindling quietly supporting her, but unwilling to share in her courage.

Yeah. Her dad did terrible things. He bullied us into wars.

But she is standing up to a bully now, and she will pay the price for that. If she were a defensive back, she’d beat out Burgess Owens. If she were a pilot, she’d shoot down Chris Stewart. If they were Americans, they’d be on her side. CW Send comments to john@cityweekly.net.

MISS: Prolific Protests

Let’s start the history lesson over. How do you change government? Well, that’s a tricky question that includes both protests like Black Lives Matter and angry stunts like the anti-masking revolt in Granite School District. Dissenting has become the way of the world, with one-in-five Americans participating in protests over the past three weeks, according to Zeynep Tufekci, associate professor at the University of North Carolina who studies the interaction between digital technology, artificial intelligence and society. Protests, she says, are signals that people want change. “Protests sometimes look like failures in the short term, but much of the power of protests is in their longterm effects, on both the protesters themselves and the rest of society,” she says. The Granite parents, mimicking the Capitol Insurrection, were just wild and unsettled. Movements like BLM and inland port protests are having impacts, although maybe not immediate ones. Ultimately, the lesson for change is through voting. Parents burning a vaccine syringe in effigy is just adolescent, and its impact is up in smoke.

HIT: Reviewing Convictions

Just to bring you up to date, the Utah Supreme Court has ruled in favor of transgender people who want to change their birth certificate “gender markings.” Yes, it was the Utah Supreme Court. The U.S. high court also weighed in on trans rights, leaving intact California’s ban on government-funded travel to states it sees as having anti-LGBTQ policies. The court rejected Texas’s bid to challenge the policy. The battle for equality is far from over, though. Sparked by an unpopular tax bill, this unprecedented movement of Colombian people has gone far beyond what anyone could have imagined, organizers say. “Less than a week after the beginning of the protests, the right-wing government withdrew the bill. This sets a huge precedent as it is the first victory of the Colombian people in decades.” Learn more about it from an eye witness report entitled Colombia in Revolt. The masses have moved to demand the fall of the government altogether. What are the next steps of the movement and what lessons can be drawn? There is reform in the air, especially for the courts and police. Summit County just launched a “conviction integrity unit,” according to the Park Record. It will look at a host of potentially wrongful convictions, some from 30 years ago, “for substantial justice and for factual innocence.” While County Attorney Margaret Olson says there was not one case that sparked the change, it’s clear that miscarriages of justice have long been endemic in the system. “Thousands of people have been wrongly convicted across the country in a system defined by official indifference to innocence and error,” reports the Equal Justice Initiative. The Brookings Institute has studied the so-called war on drugs as a tool to target Americans of color. And while Olson talks about simply creating trust in the legal system, that may be enough.

LQBTQ Inclusion Rally

Utahns are well aware that business always trumps personal well-being in government. If you can frame an argument in budgetary bottom-line terms, you’ll probably win. Kristen Cox, former director of the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget (and no relation to current Gov. Cox), has parlayed that into personal gain, taking more than $350,000 in public funds to launch a new program with a full-time teaching position for herself, according to a well-researched story in The Salt Lake Tribune. Underlying her disdain for the public health, Cox indicated that the medical establishment “put our country in serious and avoidable crisis.” Her bywords are low taxes and efficiencies, sometimes at the public’s expense, but never at hers. And because lawmakers love the idea of a business model for government, expect the business magnates to benefit.

Once upon a time, there was a little foodie magazine in Salt Lake City called Devour Utah.

Created in 2014 as a sister publication to City Weekly, over a period of six years, it grew from a one-off to a quarterly to a monthly magazine, focusing on dining out, eating well and local culinary trends, as well as enjoying the best in wine, beer and spirits in the Beehive.

Then along came a bug called COVID-19 that brought down Utah’s entire hospitality industry for a couple of weeks in March 2020. Following that, the threat of illness had restaurateurs and bar owners cautiously tiptoeing back to life in a hypervigilant, highly regulated environment. Thousands of jobs were at stake, with many of them ultimately lost over the past year. Business owners found themselves wearing multiple hats and inventing new ways to keep their dreams alive.

And Devour Utah? As a publication that relied almost entirely upon the support of independent restaurants and bars, Devour initially was published online and then, last summer, went into hibernation until such time as the industry regains its steam.

Even still, we miss the stories written by our fabulous food writers (those writing jobs also were impacted by COVID), as well as the recipes and stunning photography. And we yearned to know how local food proprietors were doing, especially now that mask mandates have been relaxed and there’s the hope of herd immunity off in the distance.

So, we touched base with a few of our Devour writers. And for the summer months ahead, we decided to start “taking the pulse” of our local eateries and drinkeries in City Weekly—at least once a month. In fact, this first “check-in” will be a two-parter.

These culinary proprietors are nothing if not creative, innovative and survival oriented. We all can take a page from their cookbook and learn what it means to pivot and prevail.

So, how’s business?

It is consistent. There are definitely some hiccups like any typical business would have, but we have been fortunate to not be victims of COVID.

Were you able to take advantage of any of the government pandemic programs?

No, we did not open on the due dates they wanted us to; we opened after, so we didn’t qualify.

What has inspired you over the past year and kept you going?

The acceptance we have gotten from all of our customers about this “new” food. Mac and I have to be at the register most of the time in order to explain the menu, and we sometimes get discouraged by the

amount of energy it takes; however, we know it to be essential to their experience. The biggest motivation has been the cultural re-education that we are doing in regards to what real Mexican food is.

Are your customers coming in numbers you would like to see?

Yes, absolutely. There are a lot of loyal people out there that are huge fans of this place, which makes me happy.

What else do you want the readers to know?

This is a beacon to any refugee or immigrant—or anyone that would be having a tough time—and not be going to bed hungry. They have every right to come here and feel at home here. We will feed any hungry refugee for free. We want people to have an experience here like the one you would have in Mexico City. We want people to have an open mind as to what actual Mexican food is like. (by Aimee L. Cook)

How’s business?

Business is awesome. A year ago, it was devastating; by the end of March last year, we were trying to figure out how to maintain the 100-plus team members that we brought on board with our mission. That was a huge stress to life in general. Myself, personally—I always felt a sense of calmness.

All of our restaurants stayed opened and pivoted into something we already knew how to do well.

Did you create a pandemic menu that you will continue to use?

Yes. You have to protect the integrity of your food.

We all realized when you order takeout, it is not going to be quite the same as what you get in the dining room. However, it has challenged the industry to be that good. One of our biggest pivots was: How do we become an extension of your own dining room; how do we create the Ginger Street experience in your dining room?

What’s your opinion of takeout and delivery?

I saw that DoorDash had an incredible platform and an opportunity to be a great bridge to the consumer, and we needed to embrace DoorDash as a partner and figure out a way to make it work, and we did. Today, it is a big part of our entire fold.

We had to pay attention to the general things like getting the right packaging and the right menu, and identifying menu items that we could not only source consistently but that we could afford (because supply chain disruptions were abundant).

Are your employees returning?

In March [2020], we did furlough, but by mid-April last year, we were ramping back up, and by May, we were hiring. By June, we’d recruited a highly talented director of operations to join The McHenry Group. Although it was hard work, we were motivated to be that cornerstone in the community, but there were a lot of unknowns. We knew we were putting ourselves at risk to be there for the community during these times. We created the option to let team members who weren’t comfortable to opt-out or furlough; others were up for it.

Are customers returning in the numbers you like to see?

Abundantly. Especially in the suburbs. Greater than 30 percent of our revenue is delivery and takeout. It was a necessity and survival, and now it’s absolutely necessary and it’s the place that we thrive in. Everything outside of Salt Lake City proper is exploding. Salt Lake proper is slowly getting back. However, each week, I am seeing an increase in the sidewalks becoming more activated.

Jeff Masten: Left Fork Grill is now open every day except Christmas

CASTING A SPELL Scott Gardner, co-owner of the local watering hole Water Witch, is glad to be lighting drinks on fire again in their small bar that locals are willing to line up for and wait-list to get a spot inside the mixologists’ haven.

So, how’s business these days?

We reopened Aug. 1, 2020, but we had to change our bar significantly—shoulder to shoulder with strangers did not work during a pandemic. Business is great now; the past couple months, we have been as busy as we can be with the seating we can accommodate. Some people have been upset that we have to turn them away. We do what we can, we use a waitlist and take reservations for parties of four or more.

What kept you going over the past year?

Mostly, just having a job was a pretty big motivator.

We put way too much time and energy getting this bar open to just scrap it because of a pandemic.

Did you do any remodeling during the pandemic?

Our bar is so tiny, we could only fit three tables. We configured the space, we lost 100 percent of our standing capacity plus our fourth table. Our patio had to be scrapped as well. We also had to put a menu together and go to table service. Honestly, it felt like we opened a new bar.

Were you able to take advantage of any of the government pandemic programs?

Yes, absolutely, and honestly, it was a lifeline. We put in a lot of time and energy. We invested in new equipment for the bar to make sure what we were doing was different and unique—not things you can do at home. If you are going to get people to leave their homes in a pandemic, our thought process was, you have to give them something they can’t just do at home.

So, you created a pandemic menu?

And it wasn’t a “we feel you, everyone is struggling, so we are going to dumb down our offerings”; instead, we level-upped our offerings and really tried to make them appealing and special.

Are your employees returning to the fold?

Yes, they are all back, 100%. Our goal was to take care of the team. We are a small, tight-knit crew.

Anything else you want your customers to know?

There is a lot of thought going into, “What are we going to be now?” when we can reopen fully. Now that we have been doing table service, it’s really difficult to take it away. Our goal is to be the version of Water Witch that we haven’t been able to provide yet. (by Aimee L. Cook)

What’s been your biggest pandemic challenge?

It was getting the sales in. In the last couple of weeks, we started to get closer to what we used to be. Some days, the sales are just not there. Weekends are going pretty well. This week, we did really good on Monday. We still do quite a few pies. A lot of pies go out.

Throughout this time, we also did a lot of food to go.

How has your business model changed?

Our business model will change because there are new apartments by us that just got finished. When they all get filled, there will be more than 500 apartments there. Right next to us! Those will be good for me. And there aren’t a lot of restaurants around here. Hope-

fully, the business will turn around. Two years ago, we had a fire and had to close for 3 ½ months. We came back then, and we will come back now.

What are your bestsellers?

It depends on the time of day. During the daytime, breakfast is our bestseller. The jam, sausage and our pies are all homemade. My mother taught me how to make the crust, which is key to making pie. Then we fill it with all kinds of fillings. Last week, we had Kentucky Derby pie, which is pecan pie with chocolate. Our raspberry cream pie, banana cream pie and chocolate cream pie are also bestsellers. We can make any pie that’s out there.

What are you looking forward to now that social distancing is ending?

Being busy, with people coming in and life getting back to normal. Customers don’t have to wear the masks when they come in anymore. Our employees will still have them for another week or two. Now, people can sit anywhere that they want to in the restaurant. It’s been a heck of a run. Now, we’re open every day but Christmas.

How did you pass the time during the pandemic?

We just tried to stay busy. Even with the pandemic, we kept all of our employees. We even have one new employee now. We’ve been here a long time. I got COVID in October; I’ve [also] been able to get my shots in now.

I just hope it doesn’t happen again. Just sayin’.

What would you like to let your customers know?

Come in and get a piece of pie! My favorite is apple—when it comes out just right. The key is, I cook it at a low temperature for 70 minutes. In some apple pies, the apples are still firm. I like mine to be cooked. (by Carolyn Campbell)

emperatures are rising, coronavirus vaccinations are proliferating and an entertainment-starved Salt Lake City is beginning to emerge from months of socially distant dormancy. For folks looking for something—anything!—to do outside their homes, organizers with the Downtown Alliance and The Blocks have a suggestion: Head to Main Street.

Beginning May 27—and extending indefinitely through the summer months—Main Street will be closed to vehicle traffic on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. With cars out of the way, pedestrians will be able to safely claim the road, and sidewalk space will be transformed into pop-up bar and restaurant patios or stages for buskers and performing artists.

“There’s nothing quite like being there to understand the concept,” said Dee Brewer, executive director of the Downtown Alliance. “There have been conversations for a very long time about reimagining the public space that is Main Street.”

Conceived in the mold of Denver’s 16th Street Mall or Manhattan’s Broadway pedestrian plazas, SLC’s Open Street program launched in fall 2020 with a four-week test run. Urban design advocates have been pushing a pedestrian-centric Main Street for years, and when the pandemic outbreak turned the city center into a ghost town, organizers saw a chance to make lemonade out of lemons.

“Within every crisis, there is certainly opportunity,” Brewer said. “We saw the opportunity to attract people downtown in a safe way—they could be outdoors, they could easily [social] distance, and they could selfmanage.”

Brewer said the initial response was positive, which encouraged planners to go bigger and bolder for Year 2. More businesses are planning to lean into the pedestrian for-

mat this year, and Brewer said fundraising is ongoing to cover costs—for traffic and transit barricades, security personnel, audiovisual staging, etc.—to keep Open Streets going throughout the summer.

And as more residents participate week to week, the case for permanently transforming Main Street (and other car-dominated spaces) becomes ever-easier to sell to an already-supportive city government.

“Our intention is to do this through Labor Day,” Brewer said. “We’re not out of the woods yet with the pandemic. But we also believe that, long term, this could be part of the downtown experience.”

While individual businesses decide whether and how to extend their services to the curb, organizers with The Blocks are rounding up live entertainment programming for each night outside the Eccles theater and at the entrances to Gallivan Center and Exchange Place. Between those stages and designated busking areas, The Blocks program director Lucas Goodrich said visitors can expect to see anything from bands and street artists to jugglers and unicyclists.

“I jest a little,” he said, “but, truly, our goal is to feature the breadth and depth of our performing community.”

Goodrich said many cities around the world have made “meccas” out of pedestrian promenades. When it’s done right and embraced by the public, an open street can be a draw in and of itself that brings with it economic, social and artistic gains for a community.

“This year, we’re seeing a lot more buyin from community partners,” he said. “It’s not a street party. It’s an invitation to come downtown and enjoy all of these amenities.”

Brewer said Main Street is already an inefficient space for vehicle travel. And with the availability of large parking garages in and around downtown, there remains plenty of space for private vehicles. But whatever way a person chooses to get to Main Street, he said, they can then head out on foot to shop, get a bite to eat, catch a performance or attend the annual festivals that are expected to return this year after being disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Downtown is for everyone, and this is one of the ways that we can make it accessible to everyone,” Brewer said. “There’s no admission. We’re leveraging the existing programming and assets that are already there—great restaurants, bars, buskers, performers—and unlocking all of that for regular use and using the public space in a different way.” CW

It’s been a good couple of years for mural artists and their fans as cities around the country rediscover the bang-for-your-buck benefits of embracing street art. But few municipalities have leaned as heavily into the trend as South Salt Lake, which is celebrating its annual Mural Fest with an artist meet & greet on May 15.

In the Balance: Ballet for a Lost Year Utah’s own Ballet West is the focus of a new, nine-episode documentary series by filmmakers Diana Whitten and Tyler Measom that premiered online on May 7, with new episodes scheduled to be released weekly. To make In the Balance: Ballet for a Lost Year, filmmakers were given unfettered access to the ballet company as it pivoted to the era of Covid-19.

Invention @ the Capitol Theatre What if some of the most notable inventions of human history were accidentally wiped from the timeline? That’s the question explored— playfully—by the latest production from the Children’s Dance Theatre Program, which is set for a five-show run—May 19-22—at the Capitol Theatre.

The two-act, 90-minute Invention follows a young inventor who cracks the code on time travel and sets about visiting the storied creators that inspired her, only to find that her meddling has somehow caused critical technological advancements to have never been achieved. Through a series of dance numbers, audiences are reminded of the various breakthroughs that made house-

hold names out of the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Marie Curie and Alexander Graham Bell, with the connecting thread of a race against time to restore history to its proper order.

Housed at the University of Utah’s Tanner Dance Program, the Children’s Dance Theatre is a 70-plus-years-old institution featuring hundreds of dancers between the ages of 8 and 18. The company showcases new original work each year at the Capitol Theatre, with Invention originally scheduled to bow in 2020 before the global pandemic prompted a postponement and a retooling of the choreography to incorporate masks and other safety measures.

Jim Breuer @ The Depot Saturday Night Live alum Jim Breuer has talked over the years about the stress and pressures of working on the venerable NBC sketch-comedy show—where he left a mark playing “goat boy” and doing impressions of Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro, among other characters. By way of a recent example, Breuer told podcasting titan Joe Rogan in March that his three-year SNL stint made him “such a dark human being.”

Perhaps that’s part of why the veteran comedian has seemingly worked nonstop over the past two decades, from starring

uring the early stages of lockdown, I started to fret about all the great local restaurants I had yet to visit. It seemed like every month claimed a great local place, and I quickly realized how much we take our neighborhood eateries for granted. Now that the vaccine is helping to ease people back into dining out, I’m trying not to waste any time visiting places that are long overdue on my list. At the top of said list was Mint Tapas and Sushi (multiple locations, mintsushiutah.com), one of Holladay’s—and now Sandy’s—hidden gems.

Chef Batsaikhan Ariunbold, or “Soy” to his friends and colleagues, holds a 10-course tasting menu ($60) at both locations, and it’s a perfect way to re-introduce yourself to the wonders of local dining.

Mint offers both patio and indoor seating, both of which are well spread out to ensure social distancing. My corner table kept me at a safe distance from other diners, and this relative seclusion—coupled with a nice view of the sunset—primed my senses for the 10 courses of sushi goodness that were on the way. Chef Soy and the Mint sushi team are all about expanding the average sushi fan’s perspective on what sushi is and can be. Yes, the regular menu includes plenty of options for fans of sashimi, nigiri and specialty rolls, but signing up for the tasting event puts you at the whims of Chef Soy and his team—I highly recommend checking this out.

It wasn’t long into my dusky reverie before the first course came my way. It was three cuts of hamachi, stacked into a cube, topped with two thin slices of jalapeño and drizzled with soy sauce—simple, colorful and sublime. As it’s the first course in a series, this unassuming dish does a lot of heavy lifting to properly wake up the taste buds and prepare them for what’s coming. The second course, lovingly dubbed “noodle tuna” by the staff, ramps up the acidity with rosy ribbons of tuna doused with soy before taking it down a notch with a creamy avocado puree. At this point in the journey, you realize that these

flavors are starting to paint a picture, and you can’t wait to see what comes next.

Dish No. 3 was a sharp diversion from the acidic notes that the first two courses were playing with. It was a plate of crisp tempura shrimp slathered in a custardy pineapple sauce and topped with shredded coconut.

On its own, I think this would be a complete star—that pineapple sauce and coconut ramped up the sweetness of the shrimp and the tempura batter adds a nice crunch to the mix. Showing up right after the first two exercises in acidity and umami, however, this dish packed a bit too much of a saccharine wallop.

The following dish of salmon and caviar brought things back to a more subtle level— the sea breeze flavor of the caviar melted into that fresh salmon quite nicely. After that came a kind of sister salmon dish which was drizzled with slightly sweet sauce that contrasted a bit better with the preceding course. These presented two sides of the salmon sushi coin and highlighted different flavors within the salmon itself. I absolutely loved this back-to-back presentation.

At the halfway mark is where Chef Soy plays a few wildcards. After that killer salmon duo came a white tuna ceviche topped with a mix of garlic, ginger, green onion and finely chopped apple. The tuna itself is stellar but taking a bite with that lovely mix of sweet and piquant is nothing short of a dream. It’s a hard dish to follow, which is where the pork belly comes in. Topped with a bit of shredded radish and a thicker drizzle of soy sauce, it’s a simple testament to the crisp, salty deliciousness of pork belly.

The final three courses of the evening were equally spellbinding. I loved the spicy tuna topped with avocado and served with a fried crisp you could dip into the creamy, heat-filled mixture, and the lamb chop finale was a marvelous showstopper. An adorable bowl of purple-yam ube ice cream topped with sliced apple and a bit of strawberry arrived as dessert, exemplifying the understated sweetness of this popular purple sweet potato.

Those looking for a traditional sushi experience can look forward to having their expectations challenged by Mint’s regularly scheduled menu any day of the week. However, if you’re looking for a way to give you and your pals a culinary indulgent gift, just let Chef Soy and his team take you on this special little journey. CW

seems a more full, almost gooey texture that accompanies the pleasant trace of sweetness. Plus, it drinks so clean! This 5.2 percent beer may not be overly tasty nor anything incredibly showy, but it sure is well-made.

Overall: I like honey and I like lagers.

It can be hard to find a combo that hits all of the notes, but this canned lager benefits from the honey addition to make a betterthan-typical Mexican style lager.

Indeed Flavorwave: When you name your beer “Flavorwave,’’ you’re immediately challenging scoffing beer nerds to prove your assertion. Let’s see if it’s justified.

The pour is slightly hazy and gold in color with a finger of white head and leaves a nice crown of cobweb lacing before settling into a thin sheet. An apocalypse of bubbles permeates to the top of the glass. The aroma is a bit sweeter and more tropical than your typical West Coast IPA style, bringing notes of pineapple and fresh honeydew melon with a splash of mango juice. There’s some citrus here as well; namely grapefruit and tangerines.

The flavor definitely follows the nose— pineapple, melon and mangoes with a touch of apricot followed by a wave of grapefruit, tangerines and lemon. The doughy malt provides a solid backbone before a subtle, piney finish.

So much flavor, yet so drinkable. The feel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation.

It’s very, very creamy and smooth with a touch of hop oiliness and surprisingly soft.

Overall: A technically outstanding IPA that is a refreshing throwback to when IPAs were not as heavy, not as sweet, but still bitter. It does live up to the name and the 6.2 ABV adds to the enjoyability by slightly dialing down the heat.

Indeed’s beers are being picked up by better pubs and restaurants all around the Wasatch Front. ver since Utah allowed beer alcohol content to rise from 4 % to 5 % in 2019, the selection of out-of-state beers has jumped up dramatically. Breweries that many of us have never heard of started popping up with fresh takes on beers Utahns may never have otherwise been able to try.

One of the newer breweries to enter our market is Indeed Brewing Company from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Indeed has been available in SLC for about six months and is offering up interesting beer styles to locals.

Recently, Indeed sent me samples of some of their Minnesota suds to review—here are a couple of their staples.

Indeed Mexican Honey Light Lager: This bright cerveza is brewed with orange blossom honey straight from orange groves south of the border. It looks a lot like honey in the glass, with a pallid orange-ish color that is unfiltered clear but seems as though it’s being viewed through a blurring filter.

The nose has a hint of honey with some citrus peel, along with a similar phenomenon in the taste—a sort of honey-nut breakfast cereal or honey-laced dessert pastry flavor that make the beer untypically quaffable for the style. I’d take this over a run-of-the-mill lager any day. That orange blossom honey must be good stuff!

The honey also seems to add a little body to the beer. A malt bill consisting of (it would seem) only pale and maybe a little biscuit malt would make for a rather thin, lifeless lager. But with the addition of honey there

Time and two new members evolve the post-punk sound of SLC’s Sculpture Club.

Sculpture Club of Life,” as well as the light and dark sides of delicacy on “Twirl for Me” and “Shed to Salt”—that’s because it is.

“I can definitely see the mood from the last album to this one [going from] … a complex emotion like anger and just kind of letting it out, whereas now it feels more purposed and nuanced,” Meisenbach says of the tonal shift, which Costello reiterates.

“I feel like anger is very clear to me. I feel like I had a lot of anger issues after the falling out with my family, and I felt like I really loved it because when I get angry, I get really focused, it’s easy and you feel so right,” Costello explains. “But I always felt like it left me feeling burned out, and then I still had a lot of shit to process after that.”

Costello says he recognizes that he’s now too tired to be angry, at least how he used to be. And that has opened the door to other emotions.

“There’s a couple songs that I wrote from more of a happy place,” he says “[On] ‘Gifts of Light,’ I’m feeling very empowered and proud of myself. ‘Clean It Up’ is from a place

of positivity. There are other songs dealing with grief.”

Jean sums it up well, remarking, “The word I think of for those songs is just kind of ‘hopeful.’ Positive and hopeful.”

On top of finally putting out this patchwork of shimmering new songs, the band is now considering how to navigate playing the album live.

“The first thing I want to do is drum-solo my way out of the house, but maybe the first thing we should do is walk out to the street, then walk back to the house, walk around the park a few times,” Meisenbach says with a laugh, translating the band’s understandable nervousness about starting to tour and play shows again after being accustomed to a year indoors.

Besides some tentative show dates on option in neighboring states, Sculpture Club does intend to have a release show, albeit a secret-ish one on May 14. Details be found on Instagram at @sculptureclub and Worth, of course, hits streamers Friday. Buy it at sculptureclub.bandcamp.com. CW

hile the name of SLC band Sculpture Club’s newest album is Worth, it represents growth—both emotionally, on the part of frontman Chaz Costello, and size-wise with the addition of two new important members to the lineup.

Time and experience make most everything better, or at least richer, and such is the case for Sculpture Club and Worth, out May 14 on Funeral Party Records.

Centered for most of its existence around Chaz Costello and Madison Donnelly, Sculpture Club worked their way from party punk to punchy post punk that was filed to an edge with the later addition of bassist Chris Copelin. As a trio, they released A Place to Stand in 2016. Worth’s opener, “Chains and Faith,” sounds like it could be at home on that last album, kicking off with a siren-like guitar line and urgent drums, but with Costello’s deep vocals markedly softer and now backed up by the soft voice of someone new.

That someone is Halee Jean, who—along with her partner Bret Meisenbach—recently joined the group to affect a complex change.

Their addition comes after a pause of sorts in Sculpture Club’s timeline, during which Co-

pelin had moved, Donnelly was temporarily in Sweden focusing on her sculpture studies and Costello was recording and touring with his other band, Choir Boy. “When I came back with all the new songs, I was like, ‘might as well just pick the good musicians that I like,’” says Costello of approaching Meisenbach and Jean.

Meisenbach and Costello have played together in many bands before, including Choir Boy and Baby Ghosts. For her part, Jean’s time in Jazz Jags and Hoofless—where she drums and plays cello, alongside Meisenbach in the latter band—undoubtedly helps build Worth’s measured and deliberate tone. Even if Copelin had stayed in the band and Donnelly returned for good (which she remains welcome to do), Costello says he still would have asked Meisenbach and Jean to join.

“My dream would be to have, like, two guitars and maybe just have Halee play cello—just have a big Cursive-ass, Ugly Organass band,” he continues with a laugh.

Sculpture Club in its new form, though, is less aligned with bands like Cursive than they are with The Cure, specifically around their Wish era. Inspired by Choir Boy bandmate Adam Klopp’s penchant for romantic string arrangements, Costello decided to make use of strings and acoustic guitars for Worth, softening the edge that was so often the catching point of Sculpture Club’s past work. Songs like “Fluttering”—besides being a cathartic release near the midpoint of the album—is a good example of those acoustics at work.

In the past, ideas came second to what the band could do with what and who they had to work with. But with more multi-instrumentalists, inspiration became less limited for Worth’s songs. That’s good, because Costello’s lyrical inspirations have changed, too. If Worth feels like a less-edgy version of Sculpture Club—filled with sun-dappled tracks like the blissful “Just One More” and “Gifts

After their single “Headrush” found acclaim on SoundCloud, and on the podcast Link & Build, local and new-ish group Dogma Society are leaning heavily into their potential on Dogma World, Vol. 1. The 10-track album kicks off with “Bottom Of The Pit” which tracks along the same lines as “Headrush”—both go hard, produced slickly with urgent yet noir-subtle back beats that Dogma Society go off around in turns between the four members. But they know how to create songs outside this hardhitting style. “Home/Doesn’t Feel Right” is an upbeat, jangly 180 that nonetheless narrates trying to see light in dark times, sun rays vs “doing coke every night to feel right”—a nod to Tyler, The Creator—type pop. The good continues: “Neverending” is a hazier version of that same catchy pop; “Take My Hand” employs bass guitar to a spare and unique punk effect (one of the most surprising and wicked turns on a surprising and wicked album); “Velvet” sounds like it was pulled from 2000s pop ether; and “Same Shit” indicates that Dogma Society is at least aware of the emo rap so popular among others their age, but channels the early millennium iteration instead.

“Interlude” is the only outlier on the album, an honest mile marker of sorts that features clips of praise from presumed fans. It would come off braggy if it didn’t just seem like an honest thank-you to those fans, as Dogma clearly works on doing all they can to blow up with songs like these. I’m inclined to agree with one of the voices: “Legends in the making, hopefully the whole world gets to catch up.” Check out Dogma World, Vol. 1 on Spotify and follow them on Instagram at @dogmasociety9.

Garth Brooks Shakes Things Up at Rice-Eccles

Governor Cox’s inbox must be filled to the brim with all sorts of important emails, but it also must be full of PR messages like the ones I get all the time, because right after I found out Garth Brooks was coming to the Rice-Eccles Stadium, he tweeted about it (he will be going, I gather). Even if he is a fan, there’s more reasons for a governor to go to this momentous event, like how it’s not only one of the first big concerts coming back to

SLC after a year of this aggressive pandemic, but also the first concert at Rice-Eccles in 10 years! For those not savvy with college football, or who didn’t go to The U., or who just live under a rock, that’s because Rice-Eccles is home to U of U football games, primarily.

Don’t Trip Fest Returns to Eagle Point Resort

The Organizers of Don’t Trip don’t want you to trip out any longer over this awful year, but to get out there with them—whether “out there” means visiting Southern Utah’s Tushar Mountains, or getting out of your usual headspace. SLC Arts Council Grants SLAM Sliding Scale Funds

In February 2020, Salt Lake Academy of Music launched their Musical Instrument Exchange program in collaboration with KRCL Radio, and since then have been able to give instruments to students who need ‘em, whether their instrument of choice lies in rock ‘n’ roll guitars and drums or classical instruments like horns, violins and acoustic pianos. These efforts have been compounded by their free-to-fee sliding scale program, funded by grant money from the Salt Lake City Arts Council Arts Learning Grant and other donations. With this funding, SLAM has been able to broaden its reach, expanding the sliding scales that make the highquality classes they offer more accessible to more students. That scale ranges from 1,200 lessons at 25% scholarship, 600 at 50%, 400 at 75% or 300 private lessons at 100% scholarship (free). These classes also apply to SLAM’s Performance, Production and Recording Programs. SLAM has a 100% COVID-free rate among their students, and so they’re carrying on into 2021 with confidence. In addition to encouraging and seeking out a diverse student body, SLAM’s faculty of educated and experienced musicians also consists of a diverse cast of musicians of many genders, races, ages and skill levels.

With ways around financial barriers, the music-loving kid you know has every reason to step into one of these courses after a sleepy school year spent on Zoom. If you’d like to donate to SLAM’s efforts to make

They aptly describe themselves as “‘90s alternative revival,” and while the moments where that is on display are solid, the real interest lies in their equal ability for crafting delicate songs, like the opener of their EP “Green Bean.” It has all the mumbled yearning of influential modern indie acts like Alex G (ditto the instrumental track “Baseball Theme”) which makes the way Koshe hops into the following song “I Was a 13 Yr Old Dinosaur Junior Fan’’ a pretty stark shift. It’s jammier and altogether looser than anything put out recently by the famous band it references, hopping with jumpy drums and charming distortion reminiscent of ‘90s rock, a garage track thru and thru that would really come to life played live. On later track “Marmalade,” singer Parviz Faiz’s voice does transform into a rather gnarly impression of J Mascis’s disgruntled growl, the snarling, snagging guitars and spare-but-heavy basslines also squaring up. But just as quickly, it’s back to the delicate with “Ballad of a Walmart Greeter,” which has all the energy of one of Elliott Smith’s low-down songs, Faiz croaking that his “heart’s got a big old hole.” The final track is a spoken word that sounds like it was recorded on a voice note, while it returns instrumentally to the now-familiar gummy, emotive guitar whose inspiration I can’t pin down—Sebadoh? Jason Molina?

Nothing really fits right. Despite their ‘90s revivalism, more apt modern comparisons might be Fog Lake, Grandaddy or Momma.

While the slightly blue guitar-led tracks feel the most satisfying on repeat listens, the whole album’s got the stuff—and if they stick with it, this would be a sound worth hearing more of in SLC. Stream Koshe when it comes out May 18 on Spotify, and follow the band on instagram at @koshe.slc.

SLC’s newest outdoor film venue rises from the pandemic’s ashes.

A

fter the coronavirus outbreak swept the legs out from under the movie business, many theaters looked to the past as they held out hope for the future.

Planned blockbuster releases were replaced on the marquee with nostalgic favorites, and the near-extinct drive-in format got an unexpected boost as exhibitors erected makeshift outdoor auditoriums to keep socially distanced revenue trickling in.

Ironically—or perhaps fatefully—the folks at the Salt Lake Film Society (SLFS) were already planning the idea to add an outdoor drive-in to their brick-and-mortar operations at the Tower Theatre and Broadway Centre Cinemas. So when the pandemic hit, and those theaters were shuttered, the nascent Studio Backlot Motor Cinema shifted into high gear.

“Everybody was doing popups,” said SLFS President Tori Baker. “Everybody was putting up a blowup screen somewhere.

But at the film society, we take our job as exhibitors very seriously.”

Housed at the Redman Movies & Stories studios—just west of Interstate 15 in Glendale—the motor cinema opened last fall with an initial series of 13 one-nightonly films, all of which played to sold-out crowds. The relatively intimate space boasts a massive screen while maxing out at fewer than 50 vehicles, which Baker said was imperative to maintain the view-toviewer proportions of an arthouse cinema.

“When we talk about a big-screen experience at the film society, we’re not kidding,” Baker said. “If you’ve got a 20-foot blowup screen in a giant park in South Jordan City, that’s not a cinematic experience. That’s

“The rumble of these guys starting their engines between the two buildings was so loud,” Clifton said. “It must have just freaked people out.”

While the Tower and Broadway remain closed, Baker was adamant that they will reopen. Many theaters around the country have gone under during the pandemic, including acclaimed movie houses like the Pacific Theatres and ArcLight Cinemas in Los Angeles, or the Alamo Drafthouse chain, which filed for bankruptcy in March.

By comparison, the Salt Lake Film Society has expanded its footprint through the creation of the Motor Cinema as well as its embrace of virtual screenings through SLFS@Home, a digital platform now used by 35 other cinemas around the country.

“That project has helped other arthouses get through their time of closure,” Baker said. “We created a technology to allow people to visit their actual arthouse and be able to donate to their actual arthouse as opposed to just being able to watch a movie online.”

The Motor Cinema kicked off its sophomore run last week with the first of 24 scheduled screenings, ranging from new, award-winning films like Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland to decades-old classics like Dirty Dancing and Footloose. And Baker said the film society plans to follow the summer slate with a series of more “funky” titles later this year.

“Fall season will look a lot like your Mad Maxes and your Rocky Horrors and all that,” she said.

Beyond the expanded schedule, visitors this year may notice an upgraded space at the Redman facilities. Company president Bryan Clifton described the Motor Cinema as something of a win-win for Redman, as its creation dovetails with the ongoing construction of an outdoor soundstage.

“We’re getting closer to halfway there,” Clifton said. “Each time we add shipping containers to it, it becomes a stronger structure and gives us more ability to do films out there.”

Clifton said the installation of last year’s screen had to be done quickly. And while they pulled it off pretty well, he said, there was room for improvement.

“When the wind blew, [the screen] started moving around. It wasn’t as tight as we would have liked it,” Clifton said. “The screen itself weighs about 10 times as much as it did last year.”

The Motor Cinema is something of a pivot for Redman Movies & Stories, which provides technical resources and crew for productions. But in talking about the drive-in, Clifton shared his vision of the studio backlot as a multi-use entertainment space where a film crew shoots on the greenscreen during the day and audiences watch films or attend live performances at night—perhaps in the future having refreshments delivered to them by servers on roller blades.

“We live with people’s dreams,” Clifton said. “It’s our job to figure out how to make it happen and we relish the opportunity.”

Some of that hybrid potential was on display during last fall’s Motor Cinema run,

Baker said those hybrid digital models are here to stay. And while they were catalyzed by necessity, she said it creates opportunities for independent film to find audiences that were previously out of reach.

“It’s been an interesting journey, and I do think at the heart of it is innovation and creativity,” Baker said. “If you can’t get your ballet back and your arthouse cinema back and your theaters back and everything else, it changes the creative culture.

And that means innovation in the business sector could be harmed because art is what feeds that innovation and creativity.”

In the meantime, big-screen fans with an itch to scratch can look to the Motor Cinema, which is scheduled to churn out a steady stream of indie fare through June.

Tickets are $27 per vehicle, and if last year is any indication, they could go fast.

“Hopefully this lineup feels very summer and very indie and exciting,” Baker said.

As we native New Yorkers like to say: “Fugetaboutit!” Forget about what? Buying a home! The latest stats from utahrealestate. com show that the sold price for all types of housing in April increased 26.9% from April of 2020!

The data shows the following average sales prices of homes by county: Salt Lake: $440,000 (up 20.5%), Davis: $435,500 (up 25.5%), Utah: $438,943 (up 25.4%), Weber: $350,000 (up 27.6%) and Washington: $450,000 (up 36.9%). Interest rates on mortgages remain at all-time lows, so getting a home loan is pretty easy.

The big problemo is that there’s about a two-week supply of homes on the market, meaning there’s virtually nothing to buy. and if you do find something, you’ll most likely be in a bidding war against cash buyers, forcing you to pay 5%, 10% or even 20% over asking price to seal a deal. Is there any hope in the future for buyers?

Lumber prices have jumped almost 250% since the onset of the pandemic last year and are expected to keep rising quickly. Supply is backlogged and can’t keep up with demand.

Lumber mills closed during the quarantines, while people stuck at home started remodeling like never before.

New housing starts nationally hit their highest levels since 2006. Suppliers cannot keep up with demands of builders and developers, and frankly, none of them can keep up with the national labor shortage.

Given these issues, it’s still better to try and buy now because prices will only continue to go up. Buyers have to get in the game and may make many offers before getting one accepted. It’s worth the battle!

Some folks think that there is hope for the 600 acres under the Utah State Prison to offer some affordable-housing options. Many want to see the area, once vacated, developed into a suburb bustling with innovation, economic growth, a mix of retail and rental and for-sale housing of all types and sustainability. This area is now being called The Point, and you can read the draft plan at thepointutah.org, where you can click on the key vision elements for transit, community, collaboration and more.

Five working groups are gathering input from as many folks as possible to plan for the site’s future. They hope The Point will become a new civic locus for Draper, Bluffdale and Riverton with its own unique open spaces and pedestrian-friendly movement linking those communities via a car-free network in and around the land. There is still some hope for housing: Salt Lake City Mayor Mendenhall announced a tiny house project being initiated by The Other Side Academy, an adult training school that serves as an alternative to people facing long-term incarceration. Gaming the System In Taiwan, where companies are required to give newlyweds eight days of paid leave, an unnamed bank employee in Taipei used a loophole in the law to claim 32 days of leave over 37 days last year, reported Agence France-Presse on April 21. The man and his wife got married four times and divorced three times, claiming eight days of leave for each wedding. The bank complained to the city labor department, which sided with the employee and fined the bank about $670 for violating the regulation, sparking public criticism.

The labor department later revoked the fine “to recognize a mistake and improve,” it said.

n An unnamed civil servant in Italy is accused of collecting full pay at his job at Ciaccio hospital in Catanzaro since 2005 even though he never showed up for work. The man is also accused of threatening his supervisor if she filed a report against him; she later retired and none of her successors noticed his absence. The BBC reported authorities discovered the alleged fraud as part of a wider investigation into absenteeism in Italy’s public sector, and six managers at the hospital are also under investigation. The truant worker reportedly collected about $650,000 over the years.

Fine Points of the Law Caron McBride, 52, applied to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles to change her name on her driver’s license after getting married in November, and was told to call the Cleveland County District Attorney’s office in Oklahoma, where she learned she was wanted there on a charge of felony embezzlement for failing to return a VHS tape of Sabrina the Teenage Witch to a Norman video store in 1999. “I thought, ‘This is insane,’” McBride said, but prosecutors accused her of “willfully, unlawfully and feloniously embezzle(ing)” the tape, valued at $58.59, according to court documents. The Washington Post reported McBride had no memory of renting the tape but guessed the man she lived with at the time must have gotten it for his two young daughters. On April 23, prosecutors in Norman said they would drop the charge and expunge McBride’s record.

Jungle Justice A man suspected of poaching rhinos in South Africa’s Kruger National Park was trampled to death by a herd of elephants on April 17, according to park authorities. Managing Executive Gareth Coleman praised the park’s “successful weekend in the fight to keep our rhinos alive” as rangers arrested five suspects, carrying hunting rifles and an ax, in a continuing crackdown on poaching, reported The Washington Post. (Bonus: A skull and a pair of pants were all that remained of a suspected poacher killed by an elephant and eaten by lions in the park in 2019.)

Police in the Hradec Kralove region of the Czech Republic were stunned when a man turned in a Soviet T-34 tank and an SD-100 artillery gun as part of a nationwide weapons amnesty program designed to legalize guns that had not been registered. Prague Morning reported on April 10 that the man was a collector of historic weaponry and has owned the 1950s-era tank, which had been painted pink, since the 1990s. Authorities checked the tank and gun to confirm they have been properly deactivated, and the man was allowed to keep them in his collection. The amnesty campaign continues until July.

Creme de la Weird Anna Marie Choudhary, 33, of Boone, North Carolina, was sentenced March 31 in West Virginia to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to seconddegree murder, ending a case McDowell County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Dennie Morgan called the “craziest” his office has ever seen.

Choudhary had been arrested, along with her father, Larry Paul McClure Sr., 55, of Pendleton, Kentucky, and her sister, Amanda Michelle Naylor McClure, 31, of Chicago City, Minnesota, in connection with the 2019 murder of John Thomas McGuire, 38, boyfriend of Amanda McClure, reported the Watauga Democrat. According to Morgan, McClure and his daughters “tortured” and killed McGuire on Valentine’s Day 2019 and buried his body.

Later, convinced McGuire was still alive, they exhumed the body and drove a stake through it before dismembering and reburying it. Larry and Amanda McClure then went to Virginia, where they were married, Morgan said. Larry McClure confessed to the murder after being arrested in Kentucky on unrelated charges. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life without mercy. Amanda McClure pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 40 years.

Opportunity Knocked Kelyn Spadoni, 33, of Harvey, Louisiana, was fired from her job as a dispatcher for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office after she was arrested on April 7 and accused of refusing to return more than $1.2 million mistakenly deposited in her brokerage account by Charles Schwab & Co., said sheriff’s office spokesman Capt. Jason Rivarde. According to a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in New Orleans, Schwab meant to transfer $82.56 into Spadoni’s account in February, but instead transferred $1,205,619; when Schwab tried to correct the error the next day, it was told the funds were not available. NOLA.com reported Spadoni is suspected of moving the money and using some of it to buy a new house and an SUV, but authorities have been able to recover about 75% of the money, according to Rivarde.
