If only they’d take the advice of the wizened Donald Trump and quit looking under rocks, they’d uncover fewer conspiracies, but no such luck. The crowd was also fed right-wing red meat by gubernatorial candidate Greg “original Trumper” Hughes and Attorney General Sean Reyes who looked ridiculous under his fresh out-of-the-box cowboy hat and who performed a sick (sick as in shitty, not sick as in great) rap. It’s a safe bet that Cedar City residents still have no idea what rap is. Fieri then introduced Raye who most likely figured that after the Reyes dud, he’d have the crowd locked up tighter than a heifer on the wrong end of a Honda knot lariat.

Did you know Fieri once officiated at a wedding for 101 gay couples? He’s also been strong for the hospitality industry during the coronavirus spread, so it’s especially striking that he would lend his Triple D hairdo to the effort that was conceived and constructed by Eric Moutsos—the former Salt Lake City police officer who left the force after refusing to ride his motorcycle with other parading motorcycle cops at the start of Salt Lake’s 2014 Pride parade.

Five years prior, Moutsos was an arresting officer of two gay men who were walking through LDS Church-owned Main Street Plaza. One of those men was City Weekly employee, Derek Jones. The claim was Jones and his partner, Matt Aune, were showing too much affection. Yep, they kissed on what was formerly a public thoroughfare. Crazy, huh? Especially since it was only yesterday that the Supreme Court tightened the definitions of the Civil Rights Act and ruled that LGBTQ+ persons cannot be fired on the basis of sex or sexual orientation. So, for anyone thinking 2020 is the year to end all years, just be reminded that ignorance, arrogance, racism, discrimination, bigotry, opportunity and greed adhere to no boundary, social strata or timeline. Much like coronavirus.

That virus crossed my computer screen this way today: As we look at America, we see cities enveloped in smoke and flame.

We hear sirens in the night.

We see Americans hating each other; fighting each other; killing each other at home.

And as we see and hear these things, millions of Americans cry out in anguish.

Did we come all this way for this?

Did American boys die in Normandy, and Korea and in Valley Forge for this?

You can add to that last line, Vietnam, Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan—because those words were delivered by presidential candidate Richard Nixon at the 1968 Republican National Convention. We’ve lost thousands of American men and woman to wars all over the world these past 52 years. At that time Nixon, as Donald Trump is doing today, proclaimed in a time-honored American code to be the “law and order” candidate. Being tough on crime really means to be tough on the disenfranchised and powerless. It’s such a powerful message that even the disenfranchised and powerless buy into the ruse.

When Nixon linked his intent—looking strong to middle-America moms and pops—to the notion that we can’t have let our soldiers die for nothing, he was talking about our boys dying in Vietnam. That effectively bifurcated American hearts and minds. Although it’s been 52 years and not much seems to have changed, much has. The year 1968 was a far worse year for America—look it up—but it was just one leg of a long relay race.

In 1968, America sang, screamed and burned, too. From those hurts and scars, from those blessings and opened minds, teachers were born. The year 2020 belongs to them, the doers— not the talkers—the new generation. Pass the baton.CW Send comments to john @cityweekly.net

or nearly a full six months now, Americans have proclaimed the year 2020 to be the worst year ever.

We’ve read all the memes and tweets about this agonizing year, like “May has been the longest year” or “Is it tomorrow yet?” and so on. No doubt, 2020 has been a bad one, already completing a devastating trifecta of deadly virus, historic unemployment levels and racial, civic and social unrest that teeters on the high wire between getting better and getting worse. The year isn’t even half over.

The above doesn’t even count an amazing array of sundry third-tier maladies. For the record, there is only one secondtier malady—the stoppage of Major League Baseball, our great American measuring stick. Our third-tier maladies include mad rushes on toilet paper, not wearing face masks as a political statement, the bold emergence from the shadows of armed white supremacists (and the even bolder acceptance of white supremacist mouthpieces like Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson), skateboard park and fishing hole closures, and the discovery that the Food Network’s everyman, Guy Fieri, is possibly a member of the Flat Earth Society.

That’s right. Guy Fieri introduced country singer Collin Raye at last weekend’s controversial and thrice moved concert in Cedar City, which gladly took the event after calmer heads in Kaysville and Grantsville booted the show down the road. I saw Collin Raye back in the 1990s at the Zephyr Club, and the man has (or had) a beautiful voice, a real love-song balladeer. But I had no idea either he or Fieri were willing proponents of a movement that adheres to the notion that wearing masks, avoiding mass gatherings and following science as does the rest of the world are really just pieces of a giant, freedom-restricting government plot.

Nuke Testing Again?

You may think that it’s only the “lefties” who oppose a reboot of nuclear-weapons testing. In this Trumpian era, there seems to be a renewed appetite for war and arms competition. And while Utah Downwinders might seem like ghosts of the past, longtime Downwinder advocate Mary Dickson told The Salt Lake Tribune she “burst into tears” upon learning the Trump administration is considering nuclear arms tests. Downwinders leader Preston J. Truman is undergoing cancer treatments from the effects of 1950s nuke tests. Deseret News photographer Jeff Allred lost two young sisters to cancer from the tests. Nuclear may be part of the energy future, but testing—even underground—should be outlawed. Between 1950 and 1960, the Smithsonian YouTube Channel notes Las Vegas’ population grew by 161% due in part to the casino industry but also because people wanted to glimpse nuclear tests in person. Do you trust the government on nukes?

March with protesters from Washington Square to the Capitol and then to the Salt Lake City Police Department where there will be a moment of silence for the nation.

Once back at Washington Square, the Juneteeth Utah-Block Party/Protest will highlight the plight of black LGBTQ+ people. While Juneteeth commemorates the emancipation in the United States, you will note that the president is holding a tone-deaf rally in Tulsa, known for one of the most horrific attacks on the black community. “We will be there to protest injustice and celebrate our people. Our spirits may be hurt, but they will never be stolen. Let’s come together, make our voices heard, and build a community!” protest organizers say. The event recognizes the ongoing threat of COVID-19 and encourage masks, hand sanitizer and social distancing. Washington Square Park, 451 S. Bust the Inland Port Plan

Most of us get it: The Inland Port business plan is “deeply flawed and openly acknowledges that the proposed giant warehouse and freight transfer facility will damage our air, water, wildlife habitat and communities, but offers no legitimate remedies,” say organizers from Stop the Polluting Port. “The technology just doesn’t exist yet for a port to be emissions free, no matter how many words they use like ‘advanced new technologies.’” Now the public has a chance to submit comments about the plan, for which consultants were paid $850,000. VP Mike Pence was all about Utah in a good way—certain that local tech companies could save the day for COVID-19 testing.

Maybe they didn’t have the “know” how to do it, but they just needed to be the “disruptive innovators” that conservatives so love. Even Ashton Kutcher (a celebrity, not a medical professional) tweeted about it.

Then along came a Salt Lake Tribune investigation that brought to light not only the state’s no-bid $5 million contract, but also TestUtah’s low positive rates. The Trib’s investigation caught the interest of The New Yorker, which did an in-depth piece on Utah firms Nomi Health and CoDiagnostics and their subsequent expansion into Nebraska and Iowa. Their online symptom screener initially had questions about the use of hydroxychloroquine, the president’s drug of choice. Now, Gov. Herbert says Utah now will be a lot more careful in its bidding. Ya think?

Maybe it was a fluke or just because the Black Lives Matter protests took precedence, but for whatever reason, the Deseret News deserves a thumbs up. The paper didn’t give credence to Collin Raye’s F-common-sense rally in Cedar City. The Salt Lake Tribune did. “This is a celebration of our freedom and not living in fear, and for moving forward,” Raye said. Attendee Attorney General Sean Reyes “rapped about how he chases ‘criminals down like a bloodhound,’” the admonished mayor of Kaysville said she was “jealous” Cedar City got to host the event and Trump’s gubernatorial candidate Greg Hughes took selfies with “patriots.” The takeaway is that the rule of law is a choice—if you don’t like it, move your event elsewhere. You can argue whether the law should prevent people from gathering, but how about good sense?, The governor was only too happy to allow gatherings of 6,000 people because, as right-wing darling Eric Moutsos says, he wants to save businesses while those Black Lives Matter protests apparently want to “tear down America.”

It sometimes seems that kids get to have all the fun. This spring, plenty of parents faced the challenges of facilitating their kids’ remotely-instructed schoolwork—and as challenging as it was for many, they also got a reminder of the interesting things that can be part of learning. For any adult who has an urge to re-create that sense of scientific exploration, S.T.E.A.M.punk Academy invites you to join in a summer-long Adult Science Fair. Instead of building a volcano, maybe you want to find out if there’s a perfect hangover remedy. Spend time formulating a plan, then spend your free time this summer getting your project ready for a showcase of all the completed projects—complete with the classic trifold display—in September.

Those who have taken seriously the call to avoid other people as much as possible during this pandemic haven’t had a lot of options available for avoiding stir-craziness. The timing of the crisis allowed people the chance to get out and take walks, but Utah’s great outdoors call to folks as summer rolls around, and there are indeed ways to get out into the world that both allow for much-needed physical activity and maintain safety.

On June 14, Woodward Park City opened the state’s newest lift-served mountain biking trails, with three trails currently open and BMX dirt jumps available for later opening as conditions allow. “Lift-served mountain biking plays a big role in how Utah families recreate,” says Shaydar Edelmann, general manager of Woodward Park City in a press releases.

“Operating our chairlift for summer mountain biking is our next step in empowering and inspiring the next generation of action sports athletes through intuitive programming and innovative environments.”

It’s likely that during this pandemic mayhem, different priorities have been set. Hopefully, mental and physical health have risen to a top spot. This year, the Huntsman Cancer Foundation has created a way for those priorities to become centered and community-based.

This virtual fest raises funds for cancer research—and this year, you can participate from wherever you are. You can run, walk, cycle, or even participate in a Netflix marathon to help this community effort June 19-20, with a $12-$25 registration at huntsmansportsfestival.com. “Participants can expect a fun, inspiring day of completing their virtual activity while spreading the word and raising funds for research at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI). Tune into the opening ceremonies [June 19], and watch throughout the day on Saturday as we do live virtual check-ins, hear from doctors and patients at HCI, and cheer each other on as we cross the virtual finish line!,” says Raegan Erickson, HCI’s event coordinator, via email.

The “get outdoors and do stuff” spirit of much of this week’s Essentials column continues, as Salt Lake Citybased outdoor gear company Cotopaxi presents the latest installment of its annual Questival event. Not surprisingly, given current events and the need for safety, the 2020 “Seize the Día” event will be entirely virtual, allowing teams of one-to-six participants a chance to participate in a grand scavenger hunt-style competition while maintaining social distance.

In the spirit of the summer solstice, Seize the Día will allow participants to seize a whole lot of daylight, as the event runs from 3 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, June 20.

oger Ebert once called movies machines for generating empathy, but I think books, comic books, television and other media do the same thing. One of the places to find the most empathic stories, though, is the world of geekdom. For as long as the genres have existed, they have been “woke” in exploring complex themes through allegory.

Here are some great installments to check out during these troubled times.

Star Trek, “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield” (1969): This third season episode of the original series tackles the absurdity of racism head-on. Sure, it’s a bit heavy-handed, but with Frank Gorshin and Lou Antonio as a pair of aliens who destroy each other to extinction because of their differences, it’s a cogent reminder that we can, and should, do better.

The Star Wars saga (1977-2019): It’s never the wrong time to revisit Star Wars, but all of them have potent messages about the time we’re living in. The original trilogy shows

creating the socialist paradise that the universe became in Star Trek.

Justice League Unlimited, “Epilogue” (2005): Written by the legendary Dwayne McDuffie, this episode of the animated Justice League Unlimited series brings together all of the threads over generations of storytelling in the world of the animated Batman series. But it also features some powerful moments reminding authorities to respond with compassion and human emotion rather than the instinct to kill or brutalize. Using Batman as that avatar for turning to compassion, it’s definitely a surprising tear-jerker.

Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet (2016): This comic run by Ta-Nehisi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze imagines a time of unrest in Wakanda that forces the most prominent Black superhero to come to terms with what it means to be a leader and a hero. If you enjoyed the Black Panther film, you owe it to yourself to check out this run of the comics.

HBO’s Watchmen (2019): Last year’s miniseries reimagined the ideas behind the original, acclaimed 1986-1987 graphic novel series as a modern television show tackling modern problems. It starts at the real-life Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, an event many watching the show hadn’t even been aware of. It gets into issues of race and policing that seem prescient if you haven’t been watching the news.

They merely bottled the reality of our world and showed us what has been in the ether for a long time.

Thanks to Governor’s Herbert’s bizarre desire to open the economy despite the ever-increasing threat of coronavirus, you’ll continue to have more time than ever to enjoy these stories. Get to it. Stay home. Read and watch this stuff. And stay safe. CW

Stories to remind you that fantastical fictions can explore our real, messed-up world.

us the importance of finding the strength to stand up to oppression and against fascism. The prequel trilogy offers a warning of how democracy decays and how to stay on the light side. The sequel trilogy might offer one of the most striking images that we need today: A stormtrooper refusing to follow orders to kill and brutalize civilians. We need more examples of that in the world.

Kindred, by Octavia Butler (1979): This classic sciencefiction novel follows a Black woman in the 1970s who finds herself traveling in time between the then-present day and a pre-Civil War plantation. Written by a Black woman, this is a fascinating take on what it is like to reckon with the past of slavery in modern times and offers a lens through which we may generate empathy.

Green Lantern/Green Arrow, Hard Travelin’ Heroes (1983-1984): After being called out for his racism by a Black man, Green Lantern has to come to terms with what life is really like in America. Green Arrow subsequently takes him around the country to open his eyes to how people actually live. The stories by writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Neal Adams from almost 40 years ago remain a guidepost in the social responsibility of comic books.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, “Far Beyond the Stars” (1998) and “Past Tense” Parts I and II (1995): In what might arguably the best Star Trek series of them all, Deep Space Nine offered two stories of racism and justice that are worth revisiting. The first, “Far Beyond the Stars,” is a fevered dream of Captain Sisko’s in which he imagines himself as a science-fiction writer coping with racism and police violence. The second two-parter sends Sisko and some of his crew to the year 2024, where they take part in an event from their past called the Bell Riots—a turning point in

Beach Bites

The Salty Pineapple offers a twist on classic Hawaiian grills

W

ith the proliferation of Hawaiian grills that have popped up all over the state, you may have missed the arrival of The Salty Pineapple (13262 S. 5600 West, 801-890-0532, the-saltypineapple.com). Or maybe you’ve missed it because it’s clear in the hell out in Herriman. Either way, this is a place that needs to be on the radar for fans of the Hawaiian trend that is sweeping the state—or for vegans and vegetarians who have yet to sample this flavorful cuisine.

The Salty Pineapple’s recently-opened storefront is built upon a foundation of hard work, opportunity and one really big cash tip. Owner Daysha Filipe started The Salty Pineapple as a food truck in 2016, where she spent three years putting to good use the techniques she learned while helping her grandparents at South Jordan’s Lanikai Grill. In 2019, The Salty Pineapple was featured on Food Network’s Big

Food Truck Tip, where host Andrew Zimmern awarded them with a $10,000 tip for their inventive Hawaiian menu. It was a huge boost to Filipe’s operation, and she used the money to expand her food truck fleet and secure a spot for a brick-andmortar location complete with a drive-through window.

When I tried the food truck for the first time, I kept it simple by ordering the double protein bowl ($10.95) with

kalua pork and katsu chicken. Even when cooking on wheels, The Salty Pineapple’s take on this traditional Hawaiian fare was above the bar— ender, slow-roasted kalua pork that melts in your mouth and katsu chicken that remains juicy and succulent within its crisp exterior. It’s all served with rice and macaroni salad, garnished with an iconic slice of pineapple that makes sure you remember where your food is from.

Upon hearing that The Salty Pineapple had officially opened its storefront, I was eager to take a deeper dive into its menu. The restaurant offers nine different protein options, so getting two of the triple protein plates ($12.95) seemed like a good way to try most of the menu—six different proteins for around $25 is a hell of a deal. It also speaks to the creativity of Filipe and her team, who have ambitiously built several creative variations on top of the mainstays of kalua pork and katsu chicken. With two triple protein plates at my disposal, I decided to check out the coconut shrimp, teriyaki beef, pineapple jalapeño tofu and Pop’s Sweet Garlic Chicken along with the pork and katsu chicken.

The surprise star of this meaty lineup was the teriyaki beef. It’s easy for places that grill up their beef quickly to overcook the meat

until it’s on the leathery side, but that’s not how Salty Pineapple rolls.

These thin slices of marinated beef were just right—tender as first love, and seasoned to perfection. The sweet garlic chicken is a welcome variation on katsu chicken, which can tend to be one-note. Both the sweet garlic and pineapple jalapeño sauces lend tricked-out flavor profiles to Salty Pineapple’s fried chicken, catering to those who like heat and those who don’t equally. Adding some surf to the existing turf, the coconut shrimp are big, beautiful and liberally doused in a coconut breading before getting deep fried.

The shrimp is tasty on its own, and dipping it into some of the pineapple jalapeño sauce is a wonderland of sweet heat.

Vegetarians and vegans interested in the Hawaiian experience can get fried tofu cubes tossed in sweet garlic or pineapple jalapeño sauces, which is a perfect meatless alternative. The beauty of the chicken dishes comes from the sauce, so dousing crispy tofu with either one of these sauces is enough to capture Salty Pineapple’s flair for combining complementary flavors.

Each plate comes with the macaroni salad that is a Hawaiian staple, and I’m always a little upset at myself for how much I enjoy that mayo-

heavy goodness. It evokes the picnic side “salads” that I grew up on, and it will always have a special place in my heart. Those familiar with the delights of Spam musubi ($3) can also get their fix at Salty Pineapple, and those who have yet to sample this bomb of a side dish need to shape the hell up. Spam musubi is a traditional Hawaiian snack that consists of grilled Spam ensconced within a cloud of sushi rice and wrapped with nori. It’s a salty palate nuke that primes the taste buds for the incoming onslaught of grilled meat and rice. In sharp contrast, the guava cake ($3) is a screaming pink confection blanketed in whipped topping and guava jelly. It’s a lovely way to end a meal that puts savory flavors on overdrive.

Food trucks are always hit and miss with me, but Salty Pineapple stood out by being consistently tasty and inventive. My inaugural visit to their storefront revealed that none of that has changed, and it’s hard not to feel a little romantic about their success story. CW

Finca Returns

Restaurateur Scott Evans recently announced that Trestle Tavern (1513 S. 1500 East) would be permanently closing to make way for the grand reopening of Finca (801-532-3372, fincaslc.com), which closed two years ago. Evans will be teaming up with executive chef Mike Richey to reinvigorate the Spanish-inspired flair that Finca was known for. Though Trestle Tavern was a local favorite to the 15th and 15th neighborhood, the response to Finca’s reopening has been overwhelmingly positive. In light of COVID-19, Finca will be offering takeout only with plans to open for dine-in service in the near future. The updated patio space and hip neighborhood will undoubtedly be a good fit for Finca’s return.

Downtown Farmers Market

As one of summer’s premier weekly gatherings, I was curious to see how the Downtown Farmers Market (slcfarmersmarket.org) would handle things during COVID-19. As it turns out, the organizers are stripping the event down to accommodate for social distancing.

For example, the event won’t dedicate any space to performers or arts & crafts, instead using that extra space to keep vendors 10 feet apart. Additionally, organizers are asking that only one person per household attend, purchase their produce quickly and head out in order to keep traffic down. The Downtown Farmers Market is in full swing, taking place on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. from now until Oct. 24 at Pioneer Park (300 S. 300 West).

Enchanted Solstice Masquerade

Since we’re all wearing masks to socialize right now anyway, why not find an excuse to spruce them up a bit? The goodly nerds at Evermore Park (382 S. This heavily-fruited IPA completely eliminates the conflicts between my wife and I, in regards to how much liquor to add to our smoothies and milkshakes. pours a bright purple color that is dense and opaque in the glass—and it actually looks like a smoothie through and through.

The aroma is moderately strong, highlighted by a medley of berries and a hint of hops.

A touch of citrus kicks in and transitions the scent over to the tangy side.

Vague berries wash across the tongue first, slightly tart and mostly sweet. Lactose sweetness comes in next, taking the edgeoff of some of the tartness for just a bit.

The hops kick in next and start to ramp up the classic, resinous bitterness. The back half of the drink is a combination of the biting hops, fruit and the lactose sweetness, in that order of prominence. As the flavor fades, the hops lingers most on the tongue, continuing to grow in strength after the

think one of the reasons that craft beer is so hot right now is that it can become much more than just another alcoholic beverage. Sure, you can have all kinds of flavored spirits, but those are generally used as flavoring for other beverages, and it’s inconceivable to find a wine that can come close to the unique flavor combos you’ll find in a basic craft beer. I found a couple more flavor-explosion beers that you will either love or hate.

Shades Pleasantly Pickled: People tend to like love pickles, right? But will that love translate into a pickle-flavored beer? The kids over Shades Brewing think so, as they’ve taken their hugely successful kveik beer and given it the dill pickle treatment. It pours a hazy pickle-brine-looking golden color, with little in the way of head or foam. As the scent greets the nose, mod-

erately strong dill week jumps out, plus just a touch of jalapeño pepper tickling the sniffer.

Dill washes across the tongue first; it’s slightly tart and with a hint of sweet. The dill quickly transitions into some light pineapple notes for just a bit. From there the chili kicks in. There is some heat, but it’s mostly in the form of a scratchy feeling in the back of the throat. As the drink fades away, the dill and the jalapeño are the only lingering flavors left on the tongue, and continue to grow in strength after the drink ends. I wouldn’t exactly call this a quencher. The tartness of the base beer combined with the dill and peppers make this more of a complementary beverage to a cold-cut sandwich or a sushi roll. I’d also recommend this as a cocktail mixer: Look at adding this into a chelada, Bloody Mary or margarita for some interesting flavor combinations.

Quarantine Desirability Rating: Given the multiple uses of this 6.5 percent beer, the cloistering factor of this beer is high.

Once you’ve exhausted all of the cocktail combinations of Pleasantly Pickled, and can pluck the pebble from Master Po’s hand, you will be ready to leave the temple … er, your house.

Templin Family Who’s Barry: Still reeling from the pickle beer, I looked towards something on the opposite side of the flavor spectrum and found it with Who’s Barry, a smoothie IPA. This beer

MATTER Get to know local activists bringing the sound and fury of black liberation

T

he murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police is a watershed moment, even Salt Lake City, where our streets are filled with ongoing protests and rallies. Mayors, police chiefs, city and county councils, lawmakers and even the governor have been on listening campaigns, many giving in to emotions of anguish and outrage upon hearing stories of ongoing systemic racism faced by our residents.

Young black activists are stepping up, finding and using their voices, leading protests made up of massive, racially diverse crowds. Pressure from a younger generation is moving things forward, demanding an end to systemic racism and police violence and charting new territory in political activism.

The protests already are sparking changes in policy and public opinion as cities consider redirecting funding for police departments to social programs.

In cities across the nation, monuments honoring racist leaders of the past have been toppled. The message is: Become an anti-racist. Stand against racism.

In this issue, we’ve asked local activists and volunteers to speak on the current moment and share their thoughts on police brutality, black liberation and upcoming events. It’s an honor to amplify their voices and bring their stories to you. Read and learn. (Look for more voices next week.)

Your organization?

I’m a community organizer here in Utah, and I’m also a youth board member at March for Our Lives, which oversees the vision, direction and perception of the organization as a whole.

March for Our Lives is one of the largest unity organizations in the country for gun violence prevention, working toward ending gun violence in America but also looking at social problems that have contributed to gun violence. This is because gun violence is a symptom of larger structural issues such as lack of education and health care, inner-city gun violence, urban planning and more. We work toward creating solutions to those problems and advocating for grassroots work.

March for Our Lives began in 2018, after the shooting [at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people] happened on Feb. 14, starting a national conversation about gun violence in America. On March 2018, Utah had one of largest student-led protests since the Vietnam War on gun violence demanding justice not only for the 17 students killed but also everyone across the country who faces gun violence.

I’ve been with them about two years now, and I just recently became the youngest board member on the national organization.

It’s an amazing chapter.

Describe your road to activism I started organizing and becoming active when I was 13—I just turned 19 years old. When I started, it was about getting awareness, putting myself in places of power. How do I attend City Hall meetings, discussions, community conversations? How do I put myself in situations to raise my awareness?

When I was 14, I actually lost a dear friend to gun violence, and that, for me, started the conversation about what systems are in place that cause violence, how is violence being carried out systematically.

That’s when I started learning about the world around us and, as my mom puts it, that was when I lost my innocence—in 2015. For a lot of people that in the fight, there’s a personal stake. For some, it’s just because they care enough. But for others, there’s a vengeance; they are on a mission and fighting for someone’s life and making sure it did not go to waste.

When I was 15, I began organizing with Black Lives Matter. From the time I experienced that trauma (with my friend’s

death) to entering Black Lives Matter work, I felt hopeless, I felt like the world was just a place where I had to exist, and when I died, I died. That was the end of the conversation. I didn’t feel like I could change—or that I could make change.

When I started organizing BLM, I began to realize the power is within the people; it belongs to the people. For me, it was a space where I felt heard, I felt understood. I didn’t feel alone. I organized with BLM for two years and, when I was 17, I also started organizing with March for Our Lives. To this day, I still organize with them. I ally myself with a lot of community organizations in Utah.

My journey is about being black in America; being Muslim in America; being first generation in America; being low income in America. Those identities alone bring a great deal of consciousness-raising about the world that we live in.

Innocence is broken at a very young age for a lot of black kids in America when they realize the injustice in the classroom, at the day care and on the street is reflective of the system itself that they operate and live in.

Growing up in a predominantly white community or non-black communities, I often felt misunderstood, like I didn’t belong. I wasn’t heard, I wasn’t seen. No one cared to understand or fight for me. It felt like a constant burden to explain myself.

Being Muslim is another identity. For my sister, being visibly Muslim wearing a hijab, it was another complexity for her having to explain her Muslim-hood, her blackness, her womanhood, and that intersectionality and identity created a unique struggle, especially here in Utah.

It is an uphill battle to be understood.

What are you feeling right now?

It’s a question of what am I not feeling? For me, I am running off the energy of hope.

It is so important to realize that this is the life of a black organizer in America: to be constantly tired, to be constantly hurt because that’s the system that we live in.

But in the past two weeks, I feel honored and grateful that my community has uplifted me as an organizer and spokesperson for the movement. It’s not about one person. It’s about who are all the leaders we can bring together to organize the goals of the movement itself. It’s an honor to be one of those but it’s also tiring to be one of those.

I just started summer school (as a double major in justice studies and communications and double minor in gender studies and French) and started a new full-time job in the communications field.

I’m also organizing a Juneteenth celebration/rally at Washington Square on June 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. a celebration of black excellence and culture, and understanding of the history of Juneteenth, and understanding that how our physical chains have been taken off, we have been placed in systemic ones. How we can create new understanding of what it means to be black in America and continue the conversation around black liberation.

Come out and support. There will be black performances, food, art and music.

On his short stint of childhood lived in Cairo I was born at the University of Utah in 1981. When I was 4, my family and I moved 9,000 miles away to Cairo, Egypt, for five years. We came back to Salt Lake when I was 9. My parents moved us to Cairo at the height of the “war on terror.” My family being Muslim and first-generation, we felt like we were under constant attack and persecution. My mom and dad moved us to a country where we could grow up with our religion, knowing we are human and not doing anything wrong. So, we went to Egypt with that goal in mind.

We were accepted. It was interesting to be black in a non-black Muslim country where we were accepted religiously, but not necessarily racially. In 2010, there was a lot of unrest that began in Egypt, so we moved back to Utah, and I graduated from Copper Hills High School.

Growing up in Salt Lake: Was it good or bad for you?

Utah being homogenous not only in religious but political beliefs and with its demographics, it’s been an interesting process. You will have good and bad experiences living anywhere. For our family, it was about finding a community of people where we could feel safe around, feel loved around and that we could be ourselves around. It was how could we create a safe haven for ourselves and make the best out of the situation we’re in.

Having a Somali-Muslim population here in Utah allowed us to stay connected to our people, language, roots and religion. That’s what made living in Utah for the most part a good experience.

Utah has one of the largest per capita refugee populations. Refugee populations here are strong, as is the undocumented population. It’s nice having a community

of people that have that same migrational story as yourself and as my family. We came together with that bond, that story.

Not only just Somali but refuges in general—we have a strong population.

My parents came in 1996, and they were among the first Somali in Utah. My dad started working with the IRC to bring more Somali families to Utah because he wanted a community here, and he wanted to help those who wanted to come.

Where do you find “community”?

It comes through community conversations and events. It’s also about supporting and uplifting community initiatives—such as black restaurants, Muslim restaurants, Somali restaurants. How do we use religion and holidays as a way to come together? How do we create a safe haven for ourselves as a place to go to and feel comfortable and to embrace our identity?

What must change to enable people of color to feel safe, valued and equal?

That’s an important goal. How do we ensure that people in our community feel as if they are respected but also heard?

It’s not about understanding people, it’s about what is it that you won’t understand. We need to foster an environment not only for education but to continue the education. It’s OK to make mistakes, it’s OK to sit in your uncomfortability and think through how you are complacent, how you are benefiting from or how you are a vehicle that drives oppression and violence against communities of color and vulnerable.

We need to foster an environment that is continually educational so we can learn what the next step is. The next demand.

Protesting is just the beginning. Let’s learn and take better action. We need to constantly reflect on how we’re serving the vulnerable and disenfranchised communities and make sure they are enfranchised.

We need to always have that mentality of learning. Ask the never-ending questions to challenge what we know and believe to be inherent. We need to question why things are the way they are, how things operate the way they do.

How have exclusion and bias shown up in your life?

Utah is the king of microaggression. That’s how unconscious or subconscious racism happens.

Sometimes it’s very backhanded compliments. For me, it can be people commenting on the eloquence of a black person.

Someone might say to me, “Oh, you’re so well-spoken.” Is it a genuine compliment or did they expect otherwise?

What can allies do to show support?

1. Allies need to put their money where their mouth is and help redistribute wealth and resources that are given to privileged communities.

2. They need to show up, not just once but answer every call to action.

3. They need to educate themselves politically—how do we think through what is next?

4. They need to make answering and sitting in their discomfort a lifelong journey and not a one-stop shop. How do we make sure we have built a habit to think of justice as a story—one that has a beginning, a middle and an end—one with many moving parts and characters.

A few specific ways people can help.

Give money to organizations like Salt Lake Valley COVID-19 Mutual Aid Group— that’s an example of how community can serve one another. There are a lot of political organizations in Utah to join—Black Lives Matter Utah, PSL (Party for Socialism and Liberation), Black Hammer—that will give us the political and intellectual opportunities to grow, serve and organize.

You could just help individuals, undocumented youth—a lot of people that need rent aid. Just think and open your purse.

Where can people learn more about systemic racism?

So many rely on the same few civil rights leaders to educate them, and we need to blow that scope up. We need to read things by Assata Shakur, Ida B. Wells and Angela Davis. Just read black literature.

When I tell people that black liberation is the liberation for every group, people think it’s an exaggeration, but it’s not.

Black people are at the epicenter of violence, patriarchy, whiteness, masculinity, capitalism and colonialism.

How can we look at liberation through the lens of black people? Let’s learn from it. The answers need to be looked at. What I’m telling you is not some new philosophy I invented. I have read from those who have come before and served. Now, it’s my time to rethink, reimagine and re-create what they’ve done and bring that into a better and more just world.

Final thoughts?

My overall message of today is to remain hopeful. The youth and marginalized communities are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Let’s put that energy somewhere. Let’s take action, let’s show up, let’s make sure that the people in power know that the power actually belongs to us. We don’t need a seat at their table because the table is ours.

Remember that justice is depending on our education but also upon us resting. Take care of your mental health, your physical health, your emotional health.

Do what you need to do to not let oppression take your joy away, which is the goal of our Juneteeth event.

Although our spirits may be hurt, they will never be stolen, they’ll be taken away.

Stay in the fight. Stay excited. Stay hopeful for a better world.

but I also have people who don’t look like me and who feel the need to persuade me away from Black Lives Matter and police reform. (That isn’t happening, though.)

Volunteer with Black Lives Matter Utah Her road to activism I’m a single mother, full-time parent to a daughter, a full-time student preparing for nursing school.

My cousin Bobby Duckworth Jr. was shot and killed by a responding officer.

The police were called out for a mentalhealth crisis, which they are not trained properly for. The officer shot my cousin, who was crying and frustrated with life.

He shot a crying, grown man who probably just needed a hug.

So, I march, because his life matters.

what I can to be heard and follow a positive leader from my community.

What are you seeing out there?

People are talking about racial injustice and questioning it. People are recognizing privilege and the unfairness of the justice system and police forces in local and outside communities. Keep talking about it. Keep educating others. Don’t stop. And vote local!

On growing up in Salt Lake Valley I moved a lot but grew up all over in Salt Lake Valley. It was definitely a mix of good and bad—I couldn’t breathe sometimes. I felt pressure to be someone I wasn’t, and I felt pressure to be things I wasn’t, too. Even now, I have family who don’t look like me, and they support me,

What are examples of systemic racism readers might not be aware of ?

Know that it is real, because I have experienced it every day. Sometimes, it is really hard to talk about it, coming from a multi-ethnic home. My white family members don’t always agree with systemic racism, but they also don’t experience it.

I’ve had my few run-ins with the police where they treated me unfairly. I used to try and think away from “because I am black,” but looking back, I was a fool. It was exactly because I am black.

What must change now to enable people of color to feel safe, valued and equal?

Everything must change. The system must change. The system was designed to value the white man, and it only considered a black person to be 3/5ths a man! If I am supposed to believe the system values me, the system has to change.

Otherwise, I am just 3/5ths.

On how to improve the criminal justice system Equal punishment across the board, and in my opinion, every case needs to be reviewed. Accountability needs to be recognized in every case.

What do you want people to know?

I need you to see and hear my color. I need you to acknowledge my color. I need you to acknowledge my color and everything it carries—from pain to joy. I need you to tell your local leaders I am one whole human—not 3/5ths. I need you to support my brothers and sisters of color by recognizing the trials they endure. I need you to shout “Black Lives Matter” every time an ignorant human tries to silence my voice or forget Breonna Taylor. Tamir Rice.

Bobby Duckworth. Darrien Hunt. George Floyd. The list goes on. People need to be active and check their own privileges.

How people can help?

Shop and support local shops owned and operated by people of color. Educate your friends and family of the ignorance of “all lives,” because that is the goal. Support your local Black Lives Matter chapter (blacklivesmatterutah.com). And mostly, speak up against systemic and racial injustice, every single time.

What needs to change?

In order for black people to feel safe, valued and equal, we must ensure that all organizations offer anti-racism training, and institute policies that eradicate racism across all fields. My priority is that we do this work across the board, not just any particular vertical. We need representation in leadership, and we need to make sure that institutions prioritize, humanize and validate the experiences of black people to ensure they feel heard and welcomed in our communities.

How can we make the criminal justice system more humane?

Though there are many actionable steps we can take to reform the criminal justice system, including amending the 13th amendment so that it is no longer used as a resort to end any possibility of life after parole for those who serve unjust sentences, we’re asking for justice in the policing act through the following steps: 1. Institute policies that end racial profiling and promote anti-racism training across all justice departments 2. Make lynching a federal crime 3. End no-knock warrants 4. Ban chokeholds and other forms of excessive force.

On growing up in New York City I’m originally from New York City and have worked on statewide and national anti-poverty, healthcare and immigration policies. My life story is recapped in Netflix’s The Kindness Diaries.

The Bronx, where I grew up, is not only one of the most diverse cities in the U.S. but also one with among the worst education systems due to systemic social injustices that plague the workforce and education system. Growing up in my favorite town in this country fortified in me the need to work in the advocacy space to reform this space and ensure equity for those in my community.

One of the things I’ve become an expert at is helping organizations improve their company cultures and create more equitable opportunities for diverse employees.

How she connects with community I am very fortunate to have access to the community I engage with. I connected with folks via work and my advocacy work.

What do you need us to hear?

At this moment, we are urging allies to join anti-blackness discussions to engage in the work. We are also encouraging folks to do more independent research and be mindful of the experiences and exhaustion that black people are experiencing at this time. We are trying to heal our communities, survive a pandemic and fight for racial justice and our right to live. It can be quite challenging to couple that with the increasing inbound outreach. The support we are receiving is phenomenal, and we are incredibly grateful, but I think people oughtta be mindful of our current experiences and use this time to do some investigative work on their own. Then, come to the table ready to engage in the work fully.

Also, let’s be kind to one another. Now more than ever, we need kindness in our allyship.

What’s she seeing out there: The events we’ve rallied behind the last two weeks have definitely invited more individuals to contribute to racial justice and the efforts of black leaders, entrepreneurs and black-owned businesses across the state. We’ve seen increased engagement across our social channels and a desire to learn from new allies, which we are so incredibly grateful for.

We have two upcoming events that will be impactful: A virtual Benefit Concert on June 20 hosted by Social Antidote at 5 p.m. We will have more details on our social channels, as well as our website.

How does Utah compare with NYC? When I moved to Utah, the community was starkly different from my own. Not only was it not as diverse, but I moved to Orem, and I felt like an outcast among the majority groups in the school. Though I was heavily involved in my school and community, I noticed that I was treated differently because of the color of my skin and the fact that I wasn’t a part of the religious community.

As an example, the dad of one of my friends did not allow him to go to a dance with me because I was black and not LDS. During my class picture senior year, my assistant principal had me stand up in front of 347 students and said “Class of 2011, please say hello to the only black person in your class” which was incredibly uncomfortable and uncalled for. Again, because it wasn’t a diverse community, one of my closest friends was outed as a gay man against his will and was a victim of verbal abuse for the rest of the year.

Moving to Utah was certainly a culture shock, and in an effort to minimize the number of microaggressions I encountered, I moved to Salt Lake City in 2013.

Since, though those interactions continue to happen, I’ve been lucky to not have as much discomfort in my life.

Organizer and leader of the Northern Utah Black Lives Matter chapter Her road to activism My activist background started when I was very young because my grandparents owned and operated an allblack American Legion, the only one in the state of Utah for over 40 years. They were also members of the NA ACP and held various positions in that organization, along with Ogden Community Action.

Fast forward to three years ago: I started again as an adult by going to Ogden’s first Black Lives Matter meeting held by Lex Scott and then inherited the chapter.

Since then, I’ve been a part of various organizations including Utah Black Round Table, Project Success and Ogden NA ACP and the United Way of Northern Utah.

In August 2019, I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer and had to go on hiatus for about nine months.

I currently work as a medical assistant for a local specialty clinic in the area. I absolutely love both of my jobs as mother activist and medical professional.

To learn more and to join her group’s efforts We currently have a Facebook group under Northern Utah Black Lives Matter, which is also the same for our Instagram account. We have a website and are in the process of building another one. Our current website is nublacklivesmatter.wixsite.com/northernutah What are you noticing right now?

Under this current climate, due to the recent protests, it has brought back the need for black community engagement and an uplifting and endearment type of feeling.

It’s realizing that we do have a lot of support.

The untimely murder of George Floyd was the straw that broke the camel’s back, and people are tired of hatred. And they are tired of hearing the same excuses over and over again. We are putting our foot down.

On the upcoming primaries Because everyone is condemning racism, we also need to hold the people in office accountable. They should all be condemning racism and, if they are not, they really need to be kicked out of office. The primary elections are going to be June 30. We need to know who these candidates are and who we have in these positions of power making these decisions for our lives.

How she connected with her community Growing up in Roy, I wound up in the same circles with people who think like me, whether it was church, family, school or activism.

How has systemic racism shown up in your life?

The most recent incident I have endured was through my 9-year-old son when he was at a local Boys & Girls Club. There were some kids calling him bad names and instead of my son being praised for doing the right thing, he was literally expelled. He didn’t yell at the kid calling him bad names; he actually went and told the teacher.

Instead of the administration stepping up and defending my son, they brought up past incidences that my son never got written up for, and for which I was never told about, and they used that as a reason to kick my son out of the program.

What must change for people of color to feel safe, valued and equal?

Honestly, black people have centuries of PTSD! I don’t know if we will ever feel safe along with many marginalized communities, but the first step is acknowledging what the problem is—racism and hatred—and condemning it out loud and in the law.

—Jakai Kelley The very first priority is the restructure of police forces with Black Lives Matter Utah’s Lex Scott’s police reform bill—or really, any police reform bill that tackles all the issues of racial bias.

In every Black Lives Matter chapter, there are people with expertise in each area that affect marginalized communities. Of course, my passion will be health care once I’m able to get there. The only way we are going to be on the same platform is by voting.

Voter registration and getting people to the polls will be another top priority for the next year.

this point, and we’re still dying for the color of our skin, but we’re done dying. I need people to acknowledge the past, present and future of the black community in the United States. We need to get our reparations so we can have the American life like everybody else wants.

We just want to feed our children, go to work and have fun without thinking there’s a target constantly on our backs. If you want to know how the black community feels, stop breathing for eight minutes and then tell me what you value most. It’s life! God-given life, and no one has the right to take that away.

How can the criminal justice system be made more humane?

By holding people accountable. There’s no reason for a judge to sentence two people—one black, the other white—and the black one gets 10 times more time than his Caucasian counterpart for the exact same crime.

So, you really need to start from the ground up and go through each person to make sure they had the right to a fair trial. If they didn’t, their cases need to be dismissed.

How people can help Of course, I’m always going to say “voting.” Getting out and volunteering in your local communities and getting to know your neighbors. Holding each other accountable for racist practices, and help marginalized communities, whether it’s donating to charities that benefit those communities by lifting people up or really engaging in police reform by requiring nonlethal force, banishing choke holds, requiring the escalation and implicit-bias training and, of course, having every police department abide by the same rules. And actually punishing officers—not putting them on administrative paid leave. ◆

n case a global pandemic wasn’t enough to rock the music industry, it’s now part of a global conversation about racism—and fittingly, too, since most music we all love and enjoy today came from generations of Black creativity. On June 2, the Instagram bandwagon movement #TheShowMustBePaused made waves within and outside of the industry. Launched by two Black Atlantic Records execs (Brianna Agyemang and Jamila Thomas) and their desire to pressure industry peers to think meaningfully about tackling racism in their respective companies, it quickly took on a life of its own. Companies, bookers, labels and venues from the large to the small all took it upon themselves to make statements on Instagram—with messages that were at best giant, transparent monetary contributions to Black causes, and at worst lip service.

Many members of SLC’s own music community also participated, posting their own black squares (which were not part of Agyemang and Thomas’s original direction for expressing solidarity) with text expressing their sentiments. The Depot and its parent Live Nation, for example, also made a donation to the Equal Rights Initiative. Even I posted a black square, before doing more reading and finding out that the squares—whether they contained hashtags like #blackouttuesday or #blacklivesmatter or not—were algorithmically beginning to block pertinent information for protesters using Instagram on the ground for valuable updates. I deleted my post promptly, but there was still plenty to see and read.

On Soundwell’s Instagram (@soundwellslc), the venue stated that they’d “stand in solidarity” with the many industry people they work with in observance of “Blackout Tuesday.” After what they (and many others) called “a day of reflection,” publicist Adam St. Simons said, “Soundwell, Live Nite Events and Reggae Rise Up all acknowledge that the music industry at-large is profoundly influenced by Black culture. We don’t think there’s anyone out there who shouldn’t agree or already be aware of [that].”

Still, St. Simons expressed the need to think about how they could keep up doing the work to make space for people of color on their stage. “The work of a music venue is inherently about providing a platform for different voices and creating a safe space for audiences to come together,” he says. “It’s within these settings that a lot of progressive ideas and messages take root. Owning a music venue naturally puts you into a space of community leadership, and we take our job seriously.”

Though these words are reassuring, clearly the music industry as a whole wouldn’t feel compelled to make statements like these if there weren’t a problem. Something in our music realm is touching racism. Many local artists of color have expressed a jadedness about SLC and its arts scene. How do venues come up with truly new ways to bring more people of color, and particularly Black

people, into the fold?

It may be harder now than it would otherwise to address these issues, as venues are also currently preoccupied with the work of surviving COVID-19. This is the case for S&S Presents. Owner Will Sartain says, though, that S&S is unique in its anti-curatorial and open format approach to booking, which allows for a more diverse range of artists on stage. While he maintains that S&S has long strived to “provide equitable conditions for all artists,” he admits that the Black Lives Matter movement makes it apparent that venues need to be communicating more with artists about their needs. “We look forward to resuming daily concerts and having those conversations. Specifically to Black artists and POC, we look forward to continuing to offer a platform,” he says.

Matthew Windsor, owner of local DIY venue Gold Blood Collective, says that he and his fellow owners Jack Harnick and Adrian Evans saw their initial black box post as a way to “give space for black voices and causes that are more important than the usual IG feed type post … but the more we looked around social media and actually read about it, we understood that all that was doing was clogging up the feed even without the #blacklivesmatter hashtag attached to it.” After deleting it, they reposted a new black box post with a message explaining why, along with helpful links to organizations in need.

“Obviously Utah is not the most diverse place, but if we’re purely booking local bands made up of white dudes and/or white suburban rappers, we are by default ignoring entire groups of people and artists that do exist in Utah and are making incredible art,” says Windsor. “Rather than say ‘Well, we just haven’t had any booking requests from Black artists this month so here’s another show full of white guys,’ I think it will be important for us to really show that we are here for everyone and make sure that Black [and] POC artists feel comfortable reaching out to us to book shows even more than they have already.”

And that’s the thing: No matter what claims of diversity exist, SLC’s rep for whiteness is something we’re constantly dancing around, whether we want to admit it or not. If we were diverse enough, would we need all those black boxes posted up on the ‘gram? CW

Every industry has been churning out responses to the current turmoil in our country surrounding racism and police brutality, and the music industry is no different. And while here in the music section at City Weekly I’ve taken efforts to make sure our Live Music Picks are never only full of white faces—or particularly white male faces—I think in order to avoid the lip service that’s been going around in music circles, it’s worth devoting this Juneteenth-adjacent issue to some of the Black artists that fill SLC with their sounds.

Not just that, but I want to encourage readers who already know and love these artists to seek out their music to buy, and for everyone else to check them out for the first time. SLC is often accused of being too white, but paring this short list down the four folks highlighted here was actually pretty hard. Like other members of the SLC music scene, I’m still figuring out how to do more for Black artists and other artists of color in our city. This list is just one small part of that.

Perhaps one of SLC’s most recognizable names in general, Joshy Soul is always where the party is—in fact, he brings it.

And he’s been bringing it for the past several years, fine-tuning his funk- and soulinfused pop sound into what it is today. The result is that he’s now one of the best locals spinning out that kind of sound, and all of the bright and dreamy attitude that comes with it, which is unsurprising for someone with as much natural charisma—and snappy dressing—as Joshy Soul. If, before the grim days of COVID-19 gripped us tight, you went dancing around any of the trendy downtown SLC venues (like Alibi), you were probably at one point in the grip of Concise Kilgore and his delicious tunes.

Concise has been a consistent name on the rosters of venues and clubs all around town for years, and he’s cemented his place as a crown jewel of underground hip hop over those years with releases like 2006’s Digitalis, 2016’s Kil Joy Division and 2019’s Prom Ride. That latest work shows a far more experimental side to Concise, utilizing samples and fine-tuned production to turn out chill yet compelling tracks, glimmering with freaky synth work and slithering, glitched-out references to jazz instrumentals. Pho3nix Child

This local jack of all trades makes her own music, but also makes space for other locals to celebrate theirs. In addition to her rapping, local mover and shaker Pho3nix Child is a hoop flow enthusiast—and, from the looks of it, an expert in the twirly, precise art. If you’re unfamiliar with hoops, I am indeed referencing the neon-glowing ones made famous by rave culture, but which for Pho3nix Child, compliment her otherwise colorful existence; one glance at her Instagram shows her lowkey rap style is offset by a bedazzled and tiedyed aesthetic. Besides making appearances alongside fellow hip hop enthusiasts at Hip Hop Organics shows, Pho3nix Child is the steward of the local music collective Zodiac Entertainment. The collective host events, and also features short interviews with local artists called A.rtists B.reakdown C.lub, and though Pho3nix Child seems to have been keeping it quiet during the pandemic, Zodiac Entertainment is now moving to celebrate local visual artists and is accepting submissions for the first edition of their new summer zine. Though she has no music for sale currently, this media master is the bright spirit many of us need right now to remind us despite it all, life is still ultimately good.

Hailing from the West Side, local rapper Izzy Davis has apparently been busy since the release of his 2019 album X-Communicated.

Filled with somber vibes, Davis’ wry and serious rap style tells tales of a turbulent childhood, making for an album that’s stoic and jaded, yet still affected. On it he shows good range, from the dark and grim sensibility of the title track to the sunshiney “I’m Sorry,” which is lifted up by plucky piano and accompanying vocals by Jae Lynn. While young rappers abound in SLC, not many seem to have access to the level of clean production apparent on this album, making the prospect of his upcoming June 19 release, Undiagnosed, very promising indeed. Available for pre-order, the album is a collaboration with local independent label LSTBYZ (pronounced Lost Boys, for those unfamiliar). A recent teaser video features LSTBYZ humorously dogging Davis and his “anti-Mormon hate speech” and his “trying too hard to be funny,” before letting slip a few seconds of music—crisp, koto-soundalike beats are a departure from the chill-as-hell single “Vibe,” but that’s not a bad thing. Epic Catch-Up

A long pandemic offers a chance to finally watch some of cinema’s great longer films.

hree months into the pandemic and three-and-a-half years into the end of the world, I have more time to myself than I used to. Aside from trips to the grocer or hiking trails, my life is lived indoors. Real life being too real, I’d rather indulge in fictional narratives—and the longer the narrative, the longer it drowns out Armageddon. So these days, I busy myself watching all the long movies I haven’t seen since college, or never got around to in the first place. Kill time with some of these grand titles.

Once Upon a Time in America: Director Sergio Leone’s preferred version runs about four-and-a-half hours, and features 50 years in the lives of Robert De Niro and James Woods (before we knew he was a creep) as hard-ass Jewish gangsters taking over New York and falling out over Elizabeth McGovern. If you can handle the casually cruel violence, copious narcotic use and horrific rape (ugh), you can soak up the stunning performances and rich period detail.

Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles: Chantal Akerman’s masterpiece follows Jeanne over three days as she goes about her daily routine in an effort to control, control, CONTROL. Watch her make a meatloaf, prepare wiener schniztel, tend to her doofus teenager, do quiet sex work.

Tedious? Maybe. But this low-key threehour and 20-minute saga rewards patience.

Fanny and Alexander: The title siblings in Ingmar Bergman’s tour de force are living an idyllic childhood until their father dies unexpectedly and their mother marries a cruel bishop. Only in Sweden, right? The

three-hour U.S. release version won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film; the five-hour version is richer, even more beautifully realized. Come for the Jewish mysticism, stay for Sven Nykvist’s camera work.

Until the End of the World: That U2 song from Achtung Baby? That’s from this movie.

Now that I’ve watched Wim Wenders’ feature again, I’m not sure what I liked about it in the first place. It’s not the story, which follows globetrotter William Hurt as he tries to record images he can project into his blind wife’s mind. Maybe it’s so I can say I sat through a four-hour and 47-minute movie.

Lawrence of Arabia: Peter O’Toole plays the title T.E. Lawrence, who, on behalf of Her Majesty’s government, goes to the Middle East in WWI to aid Prince Faisal (Alec Guinness) in a revolt against the Turks. Of course, Lawrence gets a taste of power and it slowly rots his brain. Try to see it on the big screen, when that’s a thing again. Pack a lunch.

Apocalypse Now Redux­ —Depending on whom you ask, this is Francis Ford Coppola’s last great film or his best near-miss.

I choose the latter, if only because it’s the best Vietnam War movie ever … until Marlon Brando shows up, and then it goes to shit. Redux has more good stuff, because it’s longer, and also more bad stuff, because it’s longer. A third version, The Final Cut, is shorter than Redux, and STOP MAKING DIFFERENT VERSIONS ALREADY. Sátántangó—I couldn’t get to this one.

Will you? Seven hours and 19 minutes of director Béla Tarr’s signature sustained takes will make it more compelling than Andy Warhol’s Empire, but how much is a matter of opinion. For shorter Tarr, go for The Turin Horse, a movie about the end of the world—just right as the world seems to be ending. CW

Samurai is longer, and better. The title samurai are hired to defend a rural farming village against bandits. Takashi Shimura is the quiet but strong leader, Toshiro Mifune the resident nutjob. Stark, sublime, super long at nearly four hours and worth every minute.

Spartacus—The “I’m Spartacus!” scene still produces goosebumps, and Kirk Douglas’s chin could still cut a bitch, but you know what really stands out? The NooYawk accent on Antoninus (Tony Curtis).

These guys are supposed to be Roman, right? Director Stanley Kubrick got out of the epic market for his next two films, Lolita and Dr. Strangelove, then singlehandedly kick-started the LSD biz with the gargantuan 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The Deer Hunter—If you can get through the wedding sequence, you’ll be rewarded with an on-the-nose-but-still-perfect ending that will make you weep in the strangest Vietnam film outside of Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. With racism in the news these past few weeks, I paused when I read that Salt Lake Mayor Mendenhall reportedly keeps an old map of “red lining” at her desk. I’ve not thought about that topic since I’d been in real estate school 36 years ago, as the topic is covered thoroughly in licensing classes and discussed regularly in continuing ed.

In the U.S., housing discrimination against African Americans was so intense that, in the 1930s, the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation created color-coded maps of neighborhoods said to be high risk for loan defaults. Why would a bank grant a home loan to someone who wanted to live in a “red” area if the odds were (according the HOLC) that the buyer would default?

The maps weren’t just unique to Salt Lake—there were 238 cities that used these maps as a guide to where home loans should not be granted because of high risk.

Here in Utah, the maps specifically noted where “Negroes” lived, which were areas that were coincidentally red-lined. The “best” neighborhoods where lenders easily gave out loans were upper Sugar House, property around the University of Utah, the Avenues and Sugar House itself. The main “red” areas where lenders were advised against granting mortgages were Rose Park, the west side (i.e., Poplar Grove) and Liberty Wells. Each block of the map had related information as to the education, average income, percent of vacant homes/ owner occupied homes and, yes, the racial makeup of each and every street.

President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 as a follow-up to the same act of 1964. It added language that prohibited discrimination concerning the sale, rental and financing of housing based on race, religion, national, origin, sex (which was later amended), handicap and family status. It had one hell of a time getting passed through Congress and was carefully watched by civil rights activists.

In 1968, after Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered, and riots erupted, the bill ended up flying through Congress. Red-line maps were banned, and any lender caught using anything like them would face federal charges. These rules still apply today, and Realtors continue to watch for overt discrimination in housing.

We still have problems with affordable home ownership in our capitol city and in Utah. Economic segregation is obvious if you drive around the city. You’ll find neighborhoods full of blight and areas of obvious wealth, and everything in between. We can’t control housing prices, but we can make sure our buyer’s lender is not steering them away from where they want to live by denying a loan because of their race. n Content is prepared expressly for Community and is not endorsed by City Weekly staff.

Cheeky Alex Masmej of Paris, France, is a 23-year-old with a strong sense of self-worth. So strong, in fact, that he sold shares of himself via an initial coin offering, or ICO, in April. Masmej sold tokens, called $ALEX, to 30 investors, raising more than $20,000, which he plans to use to move to San Francisco. Investors in $ALEX reportedly receive a share of any money he makes over the next three years, up to $100,000; a vote on some of his life decisions; and promotion from Masmej on his social media channels, Decrypt reported. (He has a whopping 3,200 followers on Twitter and 517 on Instagram.) “Since there are no legal contracts,” Masmej said, “I can technically run away with the money.” But he won’t because “it will hurt my reputation amongst those very people I need help from. It’s more likely that I just don’t make money and pay back very little.” Mmm hmmm.

I Am Not Dead Yet The BBC reported that on June 2, railroad workers became alarmed after spotting a pair of human feet and “no signs of life” near the Chafford Hundred station in Essex, England. The British Transport Police reported that officers who rushed to the scene “found a man in his late 30s enjoying some nude sunbathing.” A spokeswoman for Network Rail punned: “Let me lay it bare, the railway is not a place to sunbathe. Please keep away from the tracks.” Another spokesperson said the episode was “not as uncommon as you might think.” The sunbather received “words of advice” but no citation.

The Foreign Press Police in Madrid, Spain, caught up with a wanted criminal in late May, AFP reported. Nacho Vidal, a porn star, was charged with manslaughter relating to the death of fashion photographer Jose Luis Abad last year at Vidal’s country residence. According to authorities, Abad died after inhaling “venom of the bufo alvarius toad” during the “celebration of a mystic ritual.” The toad, which is native to Mexico and the southwestern U.S., secretes venom containing a powerful psychedelic substance. Police said Vidal and his cohorts have lured people who are “easily influenced, vulnerable or who were seeking help for illnesses or addictions” to the rituals on a regular basis. One of Vidal’s relatives and an employee were also arrested.

n Car buffs who were able to snag a 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 were lucky: Coronavirus shut down production before too many of them could be built. So imagine how angry the owner of one of the prized autos was when he took his car to a Chevy dealership in Jacksonville, Florida, for service on June 1—and the car was dropped off the lift. According to CarBuzz, the new ‘Vette has a different weight distribution than its predecessors, and service techs didn’t know the right way to position it on the lift. Car owner Jake Anthony posted a photo of the wrecked hot rod on his Instagram account, where he noted that “I’ve spoken with (GM) executives, I’m not interested in a new base model.”

Unclear on the Concept Julie Wheeler of Beaver, West Virginia, pleaded guilty in February to health care fraud and faced up to 10 years in prison.

So she and her husband, Rodney Wheeler, apparently cooked up a plan to keep her out of jail: On May 31, Rodney and the couple’s 17-year-old son reported that Julie had fallen from the Grandview overlook at the New River Gorge National River.

Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and rescue crews began a search for her, including use of a helicopter and rappelling into a jagged canyon, to no avail. After three days of searching, however, Julie turned up—hiding in a closet in her home, WVNS reported. Now, in addition to the fraud conviction, Julie and Rodney will face multiple charges of conspiracy and giving false information to West Virginia State Police. “It is hard to hide at home,” remarked U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart.

The Entrepreneurial Spirit Cobbler Grigore Lup of Cluj, Romania, was disturbed to see people ignoring social distancing guidelines put in place for the COVID-19 pandemic. So he created a pair of size-75 (European) men’s shoes, each of which is about 2 1/2 feet long. The shoes have a regular space for the foot but then a long bill-like section that extends from the toe. Lup told United Press International that the shoes are designed so that two people facing each other (and wearing his shoes) have to keep a distance of about 5 feet.

The Way the World Works Lowering the Bar reported on June 3 that the divorce rate in Saudi Arabia has climbed by as much as 30% during the COVID19 pandemic. According to a referenced report, at least some of those divorces are the result of women finding out that their husbands are secretly also married to another woman, an apparently not uncommon practice in that country. “The pandemic, domestic isolation and curfew contributed to uncovering the hidden (marriage),” the report noted, citing specific cases.

Double Trouble Some folks never learn. On May 9, a New Hampshire State Police trooper pulled over Nicole George, 31, in Newington.

George was driving 90 mph in a 50 mph zone; after the traffic stop, she went on. But only 13 minutes later, a second trooper clocked her doing 111 mph in a 65 mph zone in Rochester. The first trooper responded to assist at the second traffic stop, NECN reported, and she was arrested for reckless operation.

However, after her arrest, authorities found about 40 grams of fentanyl and some methamphetamine in George’s possession; they seized her Honda Pilot, and they suspect criminal activity was the reason for her big hurry.

Priorities As rioters looted and vandalized stores and other businesses in Seattle on May 30, one woman, wearing a cloth mask and a backpack, was caught on news cameras calmly walking out of the Cheesecake Factory with a whole cheesecake, adorned with undisturbed strawberries on top. A KIRO news crew captured the footage as others threw bottles of liquor and broke windows.

“With everything going on, sometimes you just have to take a moment to treat yourself,” one Twitter user commented.

I realized my error.” She went on: “I am a woman who has fought for the left for almost 40 years and who has occupied various public roles in my fervent commitment for the defense of human rights, I am a woman who is not ashamed of her body.” According to the Daily Mail, she blamed the mistake on her lack of technological savvy.
