Let’s take a trip down memory lane. What’s the best concert you have attended?

Chelsea Neider Britney Spears’ A Dream Within a Dream tour in 2001 Pete Saltas Co-worker Doug Kruithof and I went to the Claypool Lennon Delirium at the Depot in 2016. Sean Lennon is talented by his own rights, but I originally went because I wanted to see John Lennon’s son on stage. Also, I’ve never seen anybody slap the bass like Les Claypool. After the show I bought my first vinyl record—signed! And since then, I’ve been amassing a solid vinyl collection with recommendations from Sam Stinson at Randy’s Records.

I recall (vaguely, possibly due to mind-altering substances at the time, or just present-day forgetfulness) a “Snack” concert at Kezar outdoor stadium in San Francisco in 1975, which was a fundraiser for local schools. A $5 ticket (can you believe it?!) gave us a day of short sets played by Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Jerry Garcia and Friends, Joan Baez, The Doobie Brothers and a one-time collaboration of Bob Dylan, The Band and Neil Young. Does anyone else recall that amazing gathering? Not exactly Woodstock but a concert to tell the grandkids about.

It’s hard to just blame the DABC, though, it is the machine that moves the booze from barrel to gullet. The DABC is seen to lack heart, but at least it has a brain. It is the fall guy for a state that lets it take the blame for all things liquor, but never the praise. Rather, the blame primarily lies with decades of impotent governmental inertia that demands Utah drinkers overpay their burden to the state and are to be maximized and squeezed for every last profit dollar that will never be returned to them.

Hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in Utah’s liquor industry statewide. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent annually employing persons in that industry. Billions of dollars have poured into Utah as new residents and new industries—especially the banking and the tech sector—have moved here. Does anyone really think they would have come here if Utah was still the parochial backwater it was 25 years ago? Did any business relocate to Utah because it’s a “great place to raise a family?” Ever?

Utah would not be where it is economically if not for the relaxing laws that allowed the hospitality, distillery and brewing industries to thrive. Fight me. And the thanks the industry gets is that after that investment, their product is delisted because a computer said so? During a pandemic, no less! The only way a product becomes known is via advertising and marketing. Utah spends zero dollars promoting liquor or liquor brands. Utah spends zero dollars supporting the industry that puts asses on the bar stools that puts plates of food on school lunch trays that adds up to hundreds of millions in a state “rainy day fund” that won’t be spent, not even now in COVID-19, assisting the industry that got it there.

In a Kathy Stephenson article in The Salt Lake Tribune regarding this recent purge, Rob Southworth of the DABC

said, “low sales mean our customers are not very interested in those products or categories.” Not so. For starters, none of us are “your” customers—we have nowhere else to go! As well, those sales don’t even consider the “customers” Utah loses to Mesquite, Wendover and Evanston. No industry on the planet could sieve out so many dollars as the Utah controlled liquor industry and survive. Can you imagine the dollars that Utah could generate if not overlorded by algorithms and angels?

Fact: Any liquor that moves off the shelves is due to marketing from local liquor makers. Yet at the end of the day, they are measured against national brands with national marketing budgets. I’ve seen the delisting list. It’s just numbers, not names, full of quotas and controls and plusses and minuses. I look at it and shudder, not knowing which of my friends are among the 900 products soon to be taken off the shelf. To the Utah Legislature, a beer is a wine is a shot of hooch.

Utah needs to get out of the liquor business or die. No other Utah industry gives so much and gets back so little as the liquor industry. We all like our boutique spirits and handcrafted beers. Many are nationwide gold standard products, but not even gold can stand up to a clever accountant with a magical algorithm.

Who knows what will happen to Utah in 25 years? I don’t, but I can predict. I predict—for example—if our next governor, be it Cox, Huntsman, Hughes, Wright or that laststanding Democrat, continues to crap on this industry, Utah will empty at the core once again—Salt Lake City, for certain. I’m not a doomsday machine. I’m just old enough to know it’s happened before and will happen again. Utah and the DABC are killing our golden goose, but worse, they arrogantly don’t care, so, die, Utah, die! CW Send comments to john@cityweekly.net

n the late 1980s, a cover story fell through and at the last minute, I needed a filler. So, I went downtown and took some pictures. I’m a horrible reporter, so I just said what I felt needed to be said in as few words as possible. Those words became the giant headline on the front page of that issue: Die, Utah, Die. As best I recall, the content was those pictures and miserly accounts of businesses that were failing on Block 57—a once vital segment of downtown (between State and Main, from 300 South to 400 South) that had totally gone to the pigeons.

My printer came up to me as the issue went to press and said, “You know you’re going to catch hell for this, right?”

Yep, I did. The letters came as quick and furious as snail mail can achieve, including one from Mr. Fred Ball, who was the well-respected president of the Salt Lake Chamber at the time. His note was kind—which we ran in the following issue—but that didn’t matter as much as knowing that a rinky-dink little paper in Midvale was reaching an audience of people who can make a difference.

I hope we still do. Actually, I know we do, but it’s not nice to be mean anymore. So, in the nicest way possible, yeah, Die, Utah, Die. I mean, have you been paying attention to what is happening to our local distilleries and breweries at the hands of the algorithmic operations over at the DABC? They are about to “delist”—meaning remove from their shelves—over 900 items they say are not moving enough product to warrant keeping in stock. Among those 900 items are many spirits and beers produced locally and proudly by the members of Utah’s champion distilleries, microbreweries and beer pubs.

Wielding the ‘S’ Word

Is there anything that Rep. Chris Stewart, R-UT, wouldn’t blame on socialism? He wants everyone and everything to pull themselves up by the proverbial bootstraps. That means you, U.S. Postal Service. And you, populated and hard-hit states. And of course you, the voter, according to a Deseret News report. This is an old and divisive tactic of Republicans, which the Los Angeles Times calls “a purposeful shift in rhetoric and political strategy as President Trump and his party increasingly focus on his reelection and wield the S-word, socialism, as their preferred weapon.” For most of the voting public, the rise in democratic socialism is about social justice and economic inequality, not about taking over the means of production. But Stewart believes that the country should be punishing hard-hit states that have, as he puts it, “mismanaged their finances.” He and his ilk would have you believe vote-by-mail is a federal takeover open to fraud—a claim long-debunked by organizations such as the nonpartisan Brennan Center for Justice. This is about more than the $3 trillion coronavirus relief bill. It’s about misunderstanding the dire threat facing the nation.

Not to laugh in the face of hardship, but the pandemic holds no hostages economically. The landfill bordering the fragile ecosystem of the Great Salt Lake is a good example. Promontory Point Resources is in default on its bond from Box Elder County and hasn’t ever taken a piece of trash, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. The deal has been controversial, partly because the county commission signed off without public notification. There was even a plan to take toxic coal ash, although that died before the public release of a market analysis. Apparently, though, there has been zero market interest, even after Sen. Jacob Anderegg, R-Lehi, introduced a bill that would have done away with the need to prove market demand for out-of-state toxic waste. Hey, maybe COVID-19 will take down the Inland Port, too.

So, let’s talk socialism—specifically the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. This is a state-run, for-profit business, so they get to do what they want to do. According to The Salt Lake Tribune, that calls for the “Walmarting” of the liquor business. The DABC is about to purge some of the slow movers (but muchloved brands) from their shelves, and that means bringing in more mass-produced national brands because it’s all about the bottom line. In 2018, the DABC brought in more than $191 million to the state, and the amount goes up each year. The Pew Trusts notes that only Utah and Pennsylvania are total control states, and of course, we know why—the morality police are in charge. The Trib hinted at a possible compromise by allowing small businesses to carry boutique liquor items. The Legislature, holding tight to the profit-morality motive, probably won’t go for that, even though they have no idea what social drinking is all about.

The shows have been posted free of charge, and Jensen notes that the company was able to refund all tickets purchased for performances that had to be cancelled. While it’s possible to support the company financially via their website (theobt.org), Jensen believes it’s important to share the chance for a smile. “It’s been a lot of fun, remembering our history and what our theaters stand for, and our mission of sharing laughter,” she says, “especially during this harsh time of being apart.” (Scott Renshaw)

Interacting with visual art during a pandemic is a complicated matter.

On the one hand, it would seem to be easier to experience that work in a virtual setting than it would be for, say, performing art, as you can still have an individual experience of looking at a painting or a photograph.

On the other hand, an art installation is a unique chemistry between the artist and the physical space of the gallery, inviting viewers to appreciate the relationship between individual pieces—and that’s a bit harder to duplicate for people at home.

While the physical gallery space of the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art remains closed, that’s not stopping the gallery from presenting a new exhibition. Multimedia artist and BYU graduate Jane Christensen’s exhibition Mapping It Out showcases work inspired by photos the artist took on travels including New York and the Utah desert. According to UMOCA’s artist statement, “These photos then started to shift, breaking the boundary of the frame, and turning into collages, paintings, and in some cases sculptures.”

The exhibition opened with a

virtual Zoom artist reception on May 19, the first ever such opening for UMOCA. Subequent to that, virtual visitors have an opportunity to tour the exhibition in the Air Space gallery via a 360-degree experience on their website (utahmoca.org/portfolio/jane-christensenmapping-it-out/). “When seen as a whole,” the artist statement continues, “the collective body of work is the creation of a literal, psychological, and metaphorical space that is constantly evolving and is an effort to map the unsteady, at times unseen, but deeply felt, continuous shifting territories, self, and place.” (SR)

Like most retail spaces, galleries closed in March as the COVID-19 pandemic hit home. According to Derek Dyer—executive director of Utah Arts Alliance, which operates Urban Arts Gallery—the gallery took its time with putting every recommended safety measure in place before deciding to re-open on May 15.

“We decided to do this about two weeks ago, but also with the idea that we were going to take it day by day,” Dyer says. “I think a lot of people are not going out and resuming normal shopping, so we don’t think there will be a lot of crowds. But … we’re feeling pretty confident. We have three gallons of hand sanitizer.”

Upon reopening May 15, the gallery was still exhibiting work from the March show Flow— which was up at the time of the closure—in addition to new work created by represented artists during the stay-at-home period (“Buffalo Spirit” by Alex Gregory is pictured).

Life Itself Live Q&A As many independent film exhibitors have turned to “virtual cinema” models to stay afloat during the pandemic, the shift has allowed a chance for some creative thinking. Part of that creative thinking has involved providing opportunities for remote audiences to be more interactive—in a way, turning some viewing experiences into mini film festivals.

As part of its ongoing virtual cinema and its collaboration with Magnolia Pictures’ “A Few of Our Favorite Docs” series, Park City Film presents the 2014 documentary Life Itself—about celebrated film critic Roger Ebert—from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Steve James (Hoop Dreams). It plays out in part as traditional bio-doc with archival footage and talking heads, but also follows Ebert and his wife, Chaz, during the final months of his life, as the long struggle with cancer that first took his ability to eat and speak eventually takes his life. That mix of elements creates a uniquely emotional experience, like the material about his prickly relationship with TV partner Gene Siskel informing Ebert’s decision to be open about his own health struggles. Even when the film feels conventional, it captures

For 25 years, the Off Broadway Theater has entertained audiences with improvisational comedy and satirical theater presentations. When it became necessary to close down live performances for the safety of cast members and patrons, the company looked to that history to help keep audiences engaged.

“We have a lot of taped shows we’ve had over 25 years,” says Sandy Jensen, OBT’s cofounder and executive director.

“We thought, ‘Maybe it would be good to walk down Memory Lane.’ … We own those shows, so there was no copyright issue. People can talk about it and reminisce, or maybe people who haven’t seen it can see it for the first time.”

After taking time to digitize some of those past shows—many of which only existed on VHS tapes—the OBT started holding virtual weekend watch parties in April. Shows are posted at 7 p.m. on Fridays on the company’s Facebook page (facebook. com/theobt1994), with live watch party beginning at 7:30 p.m. each Friday and Saturday. “We feel at this point we can safely reopen, so we’re starting to see a little bit of life come back,” Dyer says. “We think art is essential, too, so we want to make that available to people.” (SR)

Some Utah institutions dip their toe into reopening during a challenging time.

While all the venues limited attendance in an effort to maintain social distancing guidelines, they all note that there was no way of knowing whether they’d face more people reluctant to attend for a while until the pandemic seemed more under control, or more people eager to have activities for themselves and their families. Yet despite the uncertainty, the venues say that, at least initially, the response by visitors has been overwhelmingly positive, and full of gratitude.

“It was a lot of pressure for an operations guy on doing this right,” Thanksgiving Point’s Wimmer says. “Honestly I didn’t know what to expect. But an older couple walked up to me, the man had tears in his eyes and thanked me for opening up the gardens. … To put ourselves out there and offer a service, people are grateful.” CW

and train, while the aquarium similarly has limited access to some spaces.

Yet the need to insure safety has also inspired some creative thinking, as Thanksgiving Point’s Wimmer noted about the decision to open the erosion table at the Museum of Ancient Life when that venue reopened May 8. “It is chlorinated water,” Wimmer says, “but one of the issues is crowding. We limited capacity for the exhibit, and color coded it—two kids on green and two kids on yellow and two kids on red. Kids really respond to that.”

Turning new restrictions into a kind of game has been helpful for young visitors to the zoo as well, according to Hansen, as it instituted a one-direction pathway through the exhibits: “The way the zoo is laid out now, one mom said, ‘Thank you for making my kid understand where we can go.’ Looking for the next arrow is kind of a map.”

The venues acknowledge that there is still a learning curve to these new procedures, and some ongoing difference of opinion not just over whether the venues should be open at all, but over what kind of restrictions should be placed on guests.

“We did have staff expressing concern about opening up; why don’t they [guests]

or the many businesses and gathering places that were forced to close as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the process of thinking about how they would re-open again began immediately.

Yet for many of them, the processes took turns that they weren’t expecting. Thanksgiving Point vice-president of operations Kendall Widmer, for instance, probably didn’t think that the road to reopening

would include a field trip to Costco.

“We were seeing how they installed plexiglass, how they moved cars through their gas pumps,” Widmer says. “We were all there with our masks. It was a surreal experience. But it matters. Safety matters.

We’re not taking it lightly. … The downtime we had was spent well, on conference calls with other museums around the country. It’s a whole new business.”

Public spaces like Thanksgiving Point— which, along with Hogle Zoo and The Living Planet Aquarium, reopened to guests during the first weeks of May—have made every effort to make it clear to guests that they’re taking it seriously that this isn’t exactly a return to normalcy. All three locations announced new policies in accordance with Utah state guidelines, including increased sanitation efforts, mandatory face masks for staff members, decreased capacity, timed reservations via online ticketing and designing specific pathways to help facilitate social distancing.

While there is some controversy surrounding the question of whether it’s safe yet for such locations to reopen, facilities like Hogle Zoo and The Dobson Living Planet Aquarium faced additional financial pressures that led them to be ready to go as soon as the state gave the go-ahead. “A lot of businesses when they close, their costs go down,” says Hogle Zoo’s Erica Hansen.

“Our expenses stay the same. We have animals that prefer fine meat and fine fish, and they need health care. … Our goal has always been, the day they say we can open, to be ready to go, and obviously we want to do that with everyone’s health in mind.”

“We’re following the guidelines laid out by federal and state authorities, in fact maybe even being a little more conservative about what we do,” says The Living Planet Aquarium’s marketing and communications director, Layne Pitcher. “And we are very pleased with how it turned out.”

For all of these venues, the opening has been a phased process. Thanksgiving Point opened its outdoor venues first—Ashton Gardens and Farm Country—because of the easier social distancing possibilities and to observe how operations were proceeding. Curry Pizza is the cultural fusion you didn’t know you needed

P

izza has been there for me for most of the major crises in my lifetime. So whenever I consider adding something new to my arsenal of food that will help me forget about the crisis du jour for a few precious moments, I ask myself if I like it as much as I like pizza.

Though the humble pizza pie has been a go-to for most of my life, tikka masala or saag with a few slabs of naan have come very close to dethroning pizza as my comfort food champion over the past few years. That said, when Curry Pizza (multiple locations, currypizzautah.com) opened its West Valley location a few years ago, I felt a mixture of elation and skepticism. How could something this daring possibly exist without tearing

a hole in the fabric of reality?

The concept for Curry Pizza began in the small Southern Utah town of Bicknell with local culinary daredevil Bhinda Singh. While operating Bhinda’s Curry Pizza Palace, Singh developed a recipe for honey curry. In a fever of experimentation, Singh slathered his new creation on a naaninspired pizza crust, dressed it up with mozzarella cheese and popped it in the oven.

Once it arrived in its melty,

spicy-sweet glory, he knew he had something special. Bicknell knew it too—his creation created enough buzz down South for him to move the operation to the Wasatch Front.

Currently, Curry Pizza has three locations; Singh also operates India Palace in Provo, which serves traditional Indian food.

Though I’ve been to Curry Pizza several times since it first opened, I distinctly remember my first visit to the West Valley location. It’s got a fast-casual vibe that you’ve seen before—plexiglass counters protecting vast bins of veggies and other pizza toppings—but the aromas of slow-roasting curry and lamb let you know that this is a place that knows what it’s doing. I also noticed that Curry Pizza is well-stocked with traditional pizza fixings like pepperoni and sausage, which I get. But if you come here and get a goddamn pepperoni pizza, I will find out about it and come after you.

It’s tempting to let the sheer amount of customization options lure you into creating some Frankenstein’s monster of pizza, but your best bet is to take a look at the restaurant’s signature curry pizzas. For your first visit, the obvious choice is to go with the curry pizza ($16.49 for a medium, which is plenty for two people). You get a choice of chicken tikka, lamb,

paneer or tofu, and you can’t really go wrong with any of them. Once you’ve chosen your protein destiny, it gets hit with signature curry sauce, mozzarella cheese, mushrooms, red onions, scallions, cilantro and jalapeños. When it’s done, the veggies, herbs and peppers are nicely caramelized, and that sauce ramps up the natural flavors of each ingredient.

The end result is exactly what you want it to be—the melted cheese and naan crust evoke everything you love about pizza while the curry tickles your taste buds with its dazzling array of spices.

The tikka masala pizza (pictured, $16.49 for a medium) is another great example of this conceptual fusion— it’s just familiar enough to catch a pizza purist’s attention. The tikka masala bridges the gap between Indian and Italian food nicely with its tomato-forward flavor, and its signature smoky flavor adds all kinds of new flavor profiles to the traditional pizza canvas. With its fresh tomatoes, green peppers and jalapeños, it’s awesome for those craving pizza with a lighter feel. It’s usually tough to talk me into putting more veggies than meat on a pizza, but this one balances its ingredients nicely.

I also appreciate the way Curry Pizza has adopted the chicken wings ($9.95) that have become ubiquitous

with today’s pizza places. Not that I’m a huge fan of chicken wings— I can usually take them or leave them—but the idea of mixing the Indian spice blend into traditional chicken wing sauce is extremely clever. They offer more common flavors like garlic parmesan, barbecue and Buffalo, but you’re much better off getting the butter curry or the honey curry. Anyone who considers themselves a chicken wing connoisseur needs to check this place out for some new flavors to add to their repertoire.

I could continue to gush about how much I love the fact that Singh combined two of my all-time favorite comfort foods into one delicious package, but the real revelation here is how well all of it works. Tikka masala works brilliantly on pizza, and butter curry makes a fantastic wing sauce, but the amalgam of cultures and flavors in a fast-casual setting is what I love about American restaurants. Curry Pizza thrives on a spirit that combines innovative ideas with the culinary chops to pull them off, and it will be exciting to see what they come up with next. CW

Food Bank Anticipates Need

While making projections for the next year, the Utah Food Bank (utahfoodbank.org) is anticipating an increase in the number of Utahns in need of assistance due to COVID-19. As the pandemic resulted in record levels of unemployment throughout the state, the Utah Food Bank struggled to feed those in need. Even though we’re de-escalating our risk levels statewide, the economic impact of the pandemic is expected to have long-lasting effects that take us well into next year. In preparation for this anticipated need, the Food Bank is in need of donations, volunteers and other resources.

As restaurants cautiously reopen, they’ve been tasked with additional responsibilities to maintain the safety of their customers and employees. To help, Salt Lake County recently distributed free thermometers that restaurant owners could use to take the temperature of their employees before opening for dine-in service.

This will hopefully allow restaurant owners to better monitor the health of their employees and encourage them to avoid coming to work if they are feeling any flu-like symptoms. While it’s an interesting solution, it’s going to be an awkward-as-hell conversation for any restaurant owner to have. Remember to be nice if you’re dining in.

The taste was very fruity—tropical fruity, like one of those Dole Fruit Cups that mom would always put in my Six Million Dollar Man lunch box. The fruitiness overlays a light mintiness, shored up by a crisp malty backbone. Man, this ale is deelish! The relatively low 5 percent ABV made it just that much more drinkable, and soon I had swilled away half of the crowler. I wanted more from the ale, but the reality of the beer’s style kept it to a low semi-dry roar. I didn’t want it dipping into the realm of sweetness, but maybe just a hint of more hop fruitiness, even though the various malts were doing their job to keep things on an even keel. This was quite enjoyable and it deserves to be tried again and again.

don’t know about you guys, but quarantine is going great! I’ve gained 30 pounds, and my Judge Judy Blu-ray anthology just arrived. If it wasn’t for this week’s Pink Boots beers, I’d still be playing Twister by myself. The Pink Boots Society is an organization that supports women in the brewing industry worldwide. These beers were designed by the women working in the breweries from which they came, and a portion of the profits go to the Pink Boots Society. So, drink up, buttercup.

Saltfire This is Fine: Pours a burnt orange and amber color with a thin layer of

head sitting on top. The nose is surprisingly spicy, I’d have to assume from the rye malt. Underneath the intoxicating rye rests cereal grains, and some herbal and citrus hops, though faint.

Spice from the rye malt and slightly sweet pale malt shines through in the mouth. Some herbal hops—including a grassy flavor, as well as some orange peel citrus—emerges at the end of the tasting.

This one presents a moderate level of bitterness. After letting it sit for a bit and allowing some of the carbonation to die off, I’m left thinking it needs just a little bit more body; it’s sitting on the medium to thin side. Otherwise, it’s a smooth drinker.

Quarantine Desirability Rating: I’d rate this one a solid medium with a cloistering factor not unlike kitten doped up on catnip. That li’l rascal completely tweaked my iPod. Now I have nothing to listen to as I walk around the neighborhood counting the number of ward houses on the same street in any given grid. The maximum is five by the way, with one being a stake center. Anyway, thank Thor I had a can of This is Fine tucked into my Speedo.

Fisher Pink Boots: You get no fancy tricks with this one. I cracked the crowler open and was met with a solidly unfiltered amber clarity and two raised fingers of dense, rocky, foam The nose was a curious mixture of minty pine and sweet tropical fruits. It kind of put me in mind of some New Zealand IPAs that I’ve had.

Music venues are forced to stand together to survive the economic cost of the pandemic

ometimes, having a finger in every pot can actually just mean you have a real stake in something broader. The State Room Presents—the parent company of The State Room and The Commonwealth Room—also produces concerts for the Deer Valley Concert Series, the Maverick Center, Abravanel Hall, Capitol Theatre, Rose Wagner Hall and Kingsbury Hall, making it one of the busiest music-related businesses in the Greater SLC area. With the elimination of live shows due to the pandemic, The State Room is digging in its heels to protect and uplift the industry it holds dear.

“First and foremost we are concert-goers. We often go to shows that are not ours,” The State Room Presents co-owner Darin Piccoli says, highlighting the sense of solidarity evident in the music world right now. This regard for music becomes clear if one takes a gander at The State Room’s Facebook page, which is awash with links to live-streams that technically have nothing to do with the venue itself, but which flag virtual music-watching opportunities for all the fans who follow the page. With the future unclear—and thus likewise the opening dates for their own venues—they’re hoping that investing their time and platforms in any and all music engagement will “kick the can down the road” so they can open in the future.

“I personally love when someone shoots me a link of a cool stream or anything related to music,” Piccoli says, “so why not pay it forward? Live music is the most approachable and shared experience-art out there—we don’t mind reminding people of that! We want people to miss music as much as we do!”

There’s probably not much danger of that; no doubt all of us have swapped laments about missing live events like those hosted by The State Room and its family of venues. That’s been the experience of Piccoli himself, at least. “As you can imagine, the text and email chains going around since the shit hit the fan have been abundant, and I say, let’s keep the dialogue going,” he says.

By dialogue, he probably means things like The State Room’s alliance with the National Independent Venue Association, a new organization founded by venues and promoters in the wake of COVID-19’s paralyzing effect on the nation’s music industries. “First to be closed” and “last to open” are key words in the NIVA mission

The Poster Project statement, where the music world’s uniquely dire situation is laid out—despite being essential peripheral aspects of economic heavy hitters like tourism and the food-and-drinks industry, the entertainment industry will need specialized funding and aid if there’s any chance of bouncing back. According to Piccoli, “NIVA is growing quickly and is taking a very political, legislative approach to make sure we cannot be forgotten. Currently we are working with other local promoters and agents to call attention [from] our Senators and House representatives. We have sent a letter to Senator Lee and are waiting for a reply—I guess it’s time to rattle the cage.”

It might just be time for such measures, as Piccoli emphasizes the particular precariousness of their situation. As of early May, the money from the Paycheck Protection Program would only last another eight weeks, after which Piccoli asserts they’d still need up to six months or more of government assistance before shows are possible again. Anyone who has seen scary projections about big festivals and stadium shows not returning until fall of 2021 can probably understand Piccoli’s timeline concerns.

The State Room has also linked up with another group, The Independent Promoter Alliance, which launched in March. The organization focuses on connecting promoters so they can swap ideas about how to survive beyond government funding—things like streaming past shows, compiling CDs or ideas like one that The State Room is running with, The Poster Project. An old archive of show posters, some signed, has been turned into a money-maker for The State Room. Launched on May 11, the project allows folks to bid on the posters auction-style, supporting The State Room in the process, with new posters and bidding times occurring every Wednesday until every poster is gone.

An idea they’d kicked around before quarantine, The Poster Project was propelled to the top of the priority list once they needed new income. A labor of love for weeks turned into “one of the best days since our last show on March 11,” Piccoli says about the launch day, which—though peppered with hiccups, just like a live show—was a big success.

While they summon more ideas for cool goodies to auction off when the posters run out, Piccoli encourages people to support other local businesses that are allowed to be open right now, demonstrating his—and The State Room’s—true local-loving stripes.

“Visit local artisan shops, donate to other arts, rent movies from local film societies, go buy your beer from local breweries and bars, get your harder stuff from the distilleries, get take-out food and tip like it was the best service you ever got, because it is!” he says. But don’t forget the mask, because following guidelines and staying far away from each other right now is the only way we can eventually cram together at The State Room once more. CW

Insta Stream with Ivouries

Local pop quartet Ivouries are one of many local SLC artists who had big plans that have been altered by the pandemic, including an EP which was almost completed when everything started getting serious in the world. But those events didn’t hamper them as much as spur them to finish it—a good thing, too, since the pop princes have been building a name for themselves off spare singles here and there since 2017. After streamlining the work of completion through Zoom, the only disappointment was not being able to have a release show for the self-titled EP, which came out May 7.

“We feel like we’re a band whose live show is a huge part of our draw, so since that couldn’t be a part of this release, we felt like we had to make it something that was really worth people listening to,” says keyboardist Adam Fuller. And it’s still very much worth listening to—they’ve crafted earwormy, jangly pop-centric sound for years, right down to production, and their progress is evident on the EP. Combining heydey-era 1975, angsty electro-funk, a few jammy guitar moments (“It’s Wearing Me Out”) and an extra shot of dappled sunshine, it quite frankly slaps. With the EP out, they’re focusing even more on production-heavy work, with a single planned for release in June. Other than working on music, they’ve found comfort in interacting with fans via Twitch streams, and hope to organize a live-stream concert soon.

“We’re working with some people to make it something that’s unique to us and represents our vision,” Fuller says. If it’s anything like the energy of a live Ivouries show, it’s worth looking out for. Follow them on Instagram @ivouries to keep up with live-stream dates and times.

Easy Tiger is Far from Easygoing

Local act Easy Tiger has also been hustling during these lockdown days. He specializes in experimentation of all kinds, especially on his recently-released mammoth of an album, the 21-track Jacuzzi Love 2020. The release marked the synthesis of a year’s worth of poetry stowed away by Easy Tiger and a rapid completion with the help of fellow local and production whiz Super Young Adult, with whom Easy Tiger has collaborated before.

Easy Tiger has also made music under monikers like Daisy on Drugs and Gemini Bridges, and with a new country project on the way, Jacuzzi Love 2020 was something of a purge.

“We worked on it a bunch during quarantine just finishing it up. But we kind of just imagined it to be a big dumpster full of glitter, old computer parts, etc.,” he says. “Most of the songs I’ve been writing lately have been country songs, so this was just a project/ mixtape to get rid of all the old ideas and not overthink it too much.” The two capped each song’s production time at an hour max, and it certainly is a big dump of varying influences that reflects Easy Tiger’s apparently wandering mind, inspired initially by a big Playboi Carti phase, and his wanting to mimic the pitched-up voice of Carti. He also cites Doja Cat, Lana Del Rey, Blood Orange, hi chews (yeah, the candy), glitter, Riverdale the TV show and Jackass 3 as influences. Chaotic as that may sound, trust me: It translates. Give it a whirl on all streaming platforms if you need a sugary jolt to your system.

Eccles Seeks SLC’s Talent

While there was certainly a lot of behindthe-scenes work required in figuring out how to deal with show and tour cancellations, Live at the Eccles has been biding its time with how to get involved in the community during the pandemic.

But they’re now out there offering a little morale-booster by way of Salt Lake’s Got Talent. The project is not so much a competition, like America’s Got Talent, but a fun opportunity for anyone with a creative or performative side to flex their muscles and maybe get featured on the Eccles’s Facebook page alongside other talented locals. Not only musicians or soloists are welcome, but dancers, acrobats and comedians. And if you’re wondering if there are enough acrobats in SLC worth mentioning, keep an eye on Facebook.com/liveeccles for updates and posts of the selected contributions. Maybe even take up the challenge yourself, and put what you’ve got out there where everyone can see. Curator and organizer of all things punk, local musician and mainstay Discoid Sam operates the richly-stocked punk label City of Dis (cityofdis666.bandcamp.com), as well as the DIY punk venue Dis House, which I embarrassingly haven’t been to as of yet. Before you call me a fake locallover, know that it’s because every time I see videos from the small venue, I’m freaked by how crazy, wily and packed the little spot can get—not a bad thing if you’re looking for a real punk show. If you don’t believe me, then you’re in luck, because I’ve got evidence, coming your way via the My Bowler Looks Fuck Fest.

The fest takes a different approach from what some other local venues and artists have been attempting lately—instead of operating as a live stream, it will exist on YouTube and consist of compilations of videos from Dis House shows over the years. On May 16, recordings of old Dis House shows and sets were posted on YouTube (mybowerlooksfuck). Included in the video collection are sets by both supersmall punk acts and familiar names in the dark-wave and post punk scenes, like New Cruelster (née Perverts Again), Choir Boy, All Your Sisters, Fearing, Black Marble, Soft Kill, Drab Majesty and The KVB. While it may not usually be kosher to shout out another local publication explicitly, anyone doing work to champion local artists during this difficult time deserves credit.

This much is true for Salt Lily Magazine, a small local publication that does a damn fine job when it comes to churning out coverage of local arts and work from artists themselves—from poetry to frequent profiles on up-and-coming locals or ambitious ex-locals, with a few inspired locals-centric playlists sprinkled in for good measure. I have a distinct memory of meeting the young stewardess of this dedicated mag years and

years ago. Once, perhaps even while she was still in high school, Meira Bashir wandered into the vintage shop where I was working, and fell into conversation with me, saying something sticking about feeling different from those around her. It seems she’s since channeled that outsider energy into this project, which she describes as a “love letter to all the feral outcasts of SLC,” on saltlilymag.com. Available in print and online, Salt Lily is a great resource for those looking for new local musicians, poets and photographers to keep an eye on. In Good Company

The Trip to Greece again celebrates lighthearted time spent with a good friend.

here’s a bittersweet timing to the arrival of The Trip to Greece, the fourth installment in the decade-long series of adventures starring actor/comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. This is, after all, a series based on traveling, eating in restaurants and casual hang-out time between friends—all things that are in fairly short supply at the moment.

The ability to enjoy all of those things by proxy makes The Trip to Greece a particularly welcome arrival, even though they’ve always been enjoyable diversions. Like the three previous films—2010’s The Trip, 2014’s The Trip to Italy and 2017’s The Trip to Spain—it’s an edited-to-feature-length version of a six-episode BBC TV series, with the loose set-up of a journalistic assignment sending Coogan and Brydon (once again playing thinly fictionalized versions of themselves) on a week-long journey to picturesque locales. They scout sights of historical interest; they eat wonderfullooking food; and mostly, they exchange banter over their meals and/or while en route to their next destination.

That banter is the primary reason to chill out with the Trip films, mostly-improvised bits built on the wonderful chemistry between the two. One-upmanship has always been a key part of their dynamic—Coogan attempting to assert his alpha-dog status as multi-award-winning performer, with Brydon puncturing his ego—as they exchange celebrity impressions or nuggets

of trivia. And if those exchanges draw hilariously from their real-life work—like Coogan’s starring role in Stan & Ollie inspiring Brydon to wonder about a story involving Stan Laurel and Tom Hardy, in full The Dark Knight Rises Bane voice—so much the better.

But there’s an interesting way in which that relationship seems to have softened in The Trip to Greece, perhaps partly built on the observation of how long they’ve been doing these travelogues together. Both Coogan and Brydon actually laugh out loud occasionally at one another’s performances, making those moments less about which one of them is “winning” the exchanges. As much as they can lose themselves in their shtick—to the point that they might forget that someone else is on the other end of a phone call while they’re riffing—they genuinely seem to appreciate one another.

As was the case in all of the other Trip features, there are occasional diversions here to see what’s going on in Coogan and Brydon’s personal lives, most specifically here Coogan’s concern about his ailing father. Mostly they’ve felt like awkward attempts to provide a sense of seriousness and consequence to these otherwise thor-

A wise documentarian knows when to let a lively subject take the reins, and director Elizabeth Carroll does just that with

her profile of 95-year-old Diana Kennedy, a British-born, self-taught chef whose multiple cookbooks on regional Mexican cuisine made her the country’s culinary ambassador to the English-speaking world. There’s a bit of biography just to lay the foundation— notably her arrival in Mexico in the 1950s with her journalist husband—but mostly Carroll focuses on Kennedy in the present day, as she cooks, teaches and lectures about the food she loves. What emerges is a delightful portrait of a feisty, tart-tongued, opinionated woman, but not merely one who has grown that way with age. Her perspectives are based on deep principles—to sustainable living, to honoring traditional cooking methods—and an independent streak that has defined her entire life, as Carroll shows in a great sequence crosscutting between Kennedy making the same recipe some 40 years apart, with exactly the same refusal to compromise. If there’s one complaint to be made, it’s that 72 minutes isn’t long enough to spend with someone who has built her own life exactly the way she believes a life should be lived. CW

oughly light-hearted affairs, but for some reason there’s a bit more gravitas to everyone’s appreciation that time is passing, and that it’s important to appreciate what you have when you have it. Sometimes it’s a wonderful meal. Sometimes it’s a visit to a beautiful city. And sometimes it’s time spent laughing with the kind of good friend who, when you note that you want to come back to see something you missed during your trip, assures you, “We will.”

As a native New Yorker, I think I know pizza.

For years, I didn’t order it in Utah because I couldn’t find a thin, crisp slice served on a cheap paper plate. The piece of pie had to be foldable in half with the grease dripping down my arm like it did with a slice from Joe’s or Ray’s in Manhattan or Brooklyn.

When I moved to Utah in the 1970s, there were few choices for pizza other than lame national chains. Even today, if you review my spending, you’d be hard-pressed to find I’d ordered more than two or three pies delivered to our home in any given year, and then only for a last-minute party. Yet, much to my surprise, my Visa bill showed that I bought pizza in Texas and Ohio about a dozen times in one week. Fraud alert! I’d been hacked.

Hackers and fraudsters come in many forms these days. These jerks are selling fake surgical masks, sanitizer that wouldn’t kill a single germ, forging/stealing the $1,200 stimulus checks, etc.

In real estate, there are two common frauds: 1. rental properties too good to be true and 2. fake emails that direct buyers or sellers to change where wired funds should be sent. I often get calls reporting that photos from one of my listings are showing up on a Craigslist-type website for a rental property, stating “This five-bedroom luxury home in the Avenues with a pool and four car garage is leasing for only $800 a month!” The scam is that the non-owner (criminal) will run a fake ad with someone else’s house photos, get calls from eager renters and meet them at the property. The crook has already scoped out the home, sometimes even figured out how to get in (if it’s vacant) and will tell the prospect that they can have the rental if they throw down a cash deposit right then and there! The “landlord” promises a key when they meet up the next day only to never be seen again.

The second fraud has surfaced in the past two years with computer hackers following a real-estate transaction and at the last minute sending out a fake email to a buyer that looks like it’s from their own real estate agent, escrow officer or lender changing the wiring instructions at the last minute for the funds to close. The unsuspecting victim eager to finalize the purchase changes the wire and bam!, all the funds disappear to some mystery country and asshat fraudster.

Salt Lake County now has a service to help stop fraud via the Recorder’s Office. Property Watch is free, and it notifies you if someone puts a lien /mortgage on your property without your permission. It’s like the services some banks and credit card companies offer now to alert you if someone is falsely using your account. Not What It Looks Like On April 22, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Mayor Bruce Wilkerson was hard at work at a house he’d been renovating when he smelled cigarette smoke and “heard a ruckus” outside, so he went to investigate. The former police officer found blood on the cellar door and a bag containing women’s clothing inside, but after determining there were no reports of missing women in the area, he told the Bowling Green Daily News, he went back to his work. Later, the electricity suddenly went out, so he returned to the cellar and this time found a young woman. “She said, ‘I’m hiding from someone,’” Wilkerson told police, then she ran away. Police haven’t identified her, but Wilkerson wanted to set the record straight before “a story would come out that I had a lady locked up in my cellar.”

n ABC News reporter Will Reeve made an internet meme come to life on April 28 when he appeared on Good Morning America to report on pharmacies using drones to deliver prescriptions.

Looking dapper in a sport coat and open-collared shirt, Reeve no doubt thought his home setup would camouflage the fact that he wasn’t wearing pants, CNN reported. Twitter had a field day, and Reeve himself tweeted back, “I have arrived ... in the most hilariously mortifying way possible.”

Irony The National Weather Service issued a dust advisory on April 27 in eastern Washington after wind gusts of more than 40 mph kicked up a wall of sediment. “We have had reports of blowing dust near Dusty (seriously, near the town of Dusty) on SR 26 and SR 127,” the NWS tweeted. According to Fox News, the Washington State Patrol reported that SR 26 was “fully blocked” about 3 miles outside of Dusty after a car and a semitruck crashed. The highway remained closed for about six hours.

Zoom Fatigue A videoconference meeting of the Vallejo, California, planning commission got a little weird on April 20 when commissioner Chris Platzer announced, “I’d like to introduce my cat,” then was seen throwing the cat off-screen. Later Platzer was seen drinking a beer, and after the meeting ended, city staff could still hear him making derogatory remarks about the commission, the Vallejo Times-Herald reported. In an April 25 email to the newspaper, Platzer apologized for his actions and said he has resigned from the commission. “We are all living in uncertain times, and I certainly, like many of you, am adjusting to a new normalcy,” he wrote. Mayor Bob Sampayan said he was bothered by Platzer’s “whole demeanor during the entire meeting.” The commission had scheduled a vote to remove Platzer on April 28.

Entrepreneurial Spirit Brian Wood, owner of All American Gator Products in Dania Beach, Florida, is taking face masks to a whole new level by fashioning coverings made with the skin of Burmese pythons.

“Some people want to make a fashion statement even during this pandemic, so I want to give them options,” Wood told the Miami Herald on April 19. The snakeskin itself doesn’t offer any added protection, but the masks would allow for a filter or lining to be inserted and removed. Wood hopes to add alligator and crocodile skin masks to his offerings, although alligator, “the diamond of leathers,” would be more expensive. Wood said he will be buying animals from local hunters to meet the demand.

Name in the News Police in Gwinnett County, Georgia, finally caught up with 35-year-old Speedy Gonzalez, of Buford, on April 25. Gonzalez had been wanted in connection with a theft in January, when multiple checks were reported stolen from a mailbox in Suwanee, the Associated Press reported. Gonzalez allegedly cashed the checks, used the money to buy more than $3,000 worth of merchandise at Home Depot, then returned the goods for cash. He was charged with forgery, identity theft and theft by deception.

Recurring Theme In the Sydney, Australia, suburb of Marrickville, a family has resorted to erecting a fence and a warning sign to scare away a “mystery human poo-er” who has allegedly been defecating next to their garage, United Press International reported. “We have installed this fence and a camera to hand over to police,” the sign reads. “We understand that COVID-19 is tough on everyone but please stop (expletive) on our garage.” The message also includes directions to a nearby public toilet.

Quick Thinking Eliza Ruth Watson, 37, raises chickens in Gray, Maine, so she’s used to seeing foxes nosing around, but as she worked in her garden on April 23, the fox she spotted didn’t run when she tried to scare it off by hollering and waving her arms. Instead, the animal lunged toward her, ready to attack. “Thinking back on it now, the fox was a mangy, stanky fox,” Watson told the Sun Journal.

She responded by kicking it, but “it kept coming back, and I kept kicking it.” Finally Watson grabbed the fox around the neck, and as it fought back, she shoved it into a large pot used for scalding chickens, sealed the lid and called 911 and her husband. At the hospital, she received five rabies vaccine injections. “People kept asking, ‘Are you the one who wrestled the fox?’” she said. “It’s certainly not how I expected to spend my day.”

Least Competent Criminal North Carolina State Highway Patrol officers stopped Lance Gordon, 32, on April 24, for speeding in a car belonging to Angela Lee, 47, of Holly Springs, whom Gordon said was an acquaintance. WRAL reported authorities grew suspicious after Holly Springs police were unable to contact Lee to confirm the story, and in a subsequent search of her house and car, investigators found Lee’s body in the car’s trunk. Gordon was charged with Lee’s murder, along with stealing her car.

Desperate Times In Logrono, Spain, an unidentified man pushed the envelope on Spain’s stringent lockdown rules, which make an exception for pet owners, who are allowed to go outside briefly with their pets, according to Gray News. The National Police tweeted a photo on April 24 of the man being arrested for sitting on a city bench holding his pet fish a fish bowl.
