We are delighted to present the Cass Business School Careers Events programme 2018/19. It has been designed to give you an insight into a range of careers options and the skills you will need to successfully apply for work experience, training schemes and graduate jobs within the business, finance, actuarial and risk management sectors. This guide contains an overview of the central business careers events at City, University of London in the autumn term and a snapshot of what is coming up in the spring term. The programme has been designed in collaboration with the Cass Business School for both undergraduate and postgraduate Cass students as well as students from other disciplines who are interested in pursuing a career within these sectors.

Help with your careers The Cass Undergraduate Placement Office A placement year is a great opportunity for you to develop workplace skills and graduate with one year’s professional work experience helping you to stand out from the crowd. The dedicated Placements team are here to support second year Cass undergraduate students who are interested in a work placement and/or summer internship. They can help with: • A lerting you of placement and summer internship opportunities directly through email or via our online resources and keep you updated on upcoming deadlines • Offering one-to-one advice and support, including help with your CV, cover letters and applications • Delivering placement or internship preparation briefing sessions • Matching you with previous placement students for advice and to help you prepare for an interview • Monitoring you throughout your time on placement.

Careers Consultant Services All City students and recent graduates can book an appointment with one of our career consultants. There are three that work specifically with Cass students – Amy Lourenco, Neela Nawathe and Emma O’Brien. They offer three main types of appointment to suit different requirements: quick query appointments, career guidance appointments and mock interview appointments. Appointments are bookable through www.careershub.city.ac.uk/students. The team will be delivering Cass-specific careers workshops throughout the year and will also be tutors on the first-year undergraduate module Business Skills and Management Lab and Business Skills. You can also meet them in one-to-one appointments at the Careers Service. These are bookable via City CareersHub on careershub.city.ac.uk/students. The careers consultants deliver Cass-specific careers workshops throughout the year.

Fair preparation session – Making the most of the Banking, Finance and Consultancy Fair Monday 1st October 2018, 13:00 – 14:00 Join the Careers Service and Fair sponsor Aviva to get top tips on networking and discuss best practice for making the most of the Banking, Finance and Consultancy Fair. These sessions will cover: • Researching exhibiting organisations and employers prior to the Fair • Learning the art of successful networking • How to make a good first impression on the day • The Fair from an employer perspective - what are they really looking for • How attending the Fair can help you make your application stand out if you apply to one of the exhibiting organisations • W hat you can expect from the Fair depending on your year and level of study. Students who register and attend one of these sessions will be given a fast-track pass which will allow priority entry to the Fair during the first hour (14:00 – 15:00). The City Banking, Finance and Consultancy Fair Wednesday 3rd October 2018, 14:00 – 16:30 (14:00 – 15:00: priority entry with fast-track pass) Sponsored by Aviva, this is a unique opportunity for you to meet various employers and organisations in just a couple of hours. Jump-start your career in banking and finance

How to sell yourself at application and interview

In this event the Cass alumnus Charles Oseni will discuss how he secured work experience during his undergraduate degree and the intuition behind his approach. He will advise you on how an intern can best utilise their time during an internship or placement and how to stay motivated in the face of tough competition. In this event you will discover techniques used to network on and offline, what it is really like to work in a financial house as well as how to improve your technical knowledge in banking. From this session you can expect to: • Get practical tips on how to gain the right sort of work experience • Get help deciding on two to three areas of finance to focus on for your career path • Gain confidence in your ability to build a network on and offline • Learn how to discover and utilise opportunities outside of the big four or a bulge bracket firm.

Investment banking financial modelling course Monday 15th October 2018, 18:30 – 21:00 This event is an interactive introduction to financial modelling bought to you by Sultan LeMarc, formerly with M&A and currently with Deutsche Bank. In this event you will be provided with an introductory tutorial on modelling used in investment banking, followed a live interactive modelling session using Microsoft Excel to determine the valuation of a company. The course does not assume prerequisite knowledge and is suitable for all including those from a non-finance background. A career in securities lending Monday 29th October 2018, 18:00 – 20:00 This event is a three part interactive introduction to securities lending bought to you by Natalia Lopez. The event will: • Introduce the securities lending industry enabling attendees to gain an understanding of a securities lending transaction and the market participants involved. You will also discern the difference between investment and custodian banking services as well as the meaning of financial vocabulary often found in job descriptions such as collateral, margin, rebate, triparty etc. • Cover the different careers options available within the sector and the skills and experience required for securing each role. This event is designed to give you a platform to direct any questions and thoughts you have to a number of industry professionals and employers from across the marketing sector. The aim of the event is to help you understand the number of career options that are available to you upon graduating and to also help you make an informed career choice when you start exploring your options. Sector professionals from top organisations will cover: • How they got to where they are today • A typical day in their role • Soft skills, academic qualifications and work experience that students need in order to secure a placement or graduate position • Top tips for applications, interviews and assessment centres.

This session gives you an insight into chartered accountancy and is designed to highlight that as a chartered accountant you are a business adviser and do not just deal with money matters. The format of each business game differs, but a typical challenge involves looking at the financial overview of a company, carrying out a SWOT analysis and making key strategic business decisions and recommendations. You will then present your findings and recommendations back to the ‘board of directors’ of the company in the case study. You will work in a team and develop your business knowledge and commercial awareness. The format of the business challenge is also a great preparation for assessment centres as you will need to use and develop time management, team working, communication and presentation skills.

Employability Skills Programme The Employability Skills Programme, sponsored by KPMG, will prepare you to make the transition from education to work, exploring all aspects of the selection and recruitment process.
