Open events Held throughout the academic year

Our open events are the perfect opportunity for year 10 and year 11 pupils to visit our campuses, find out more about our courses, see our amazing facilities, meet our expert teaching staff and get a feel for the college atmosphere.

During the events, which are usually held on an evening or weekend, our Information, Advice and Guidance teams are also available to answer any questions you may have about finance, welfare or learning support.

These exclusive events are the second step of your application journey and tailored to school leavers who have applied for one of our courses starting in September.

These interactive sessions give you a flavour of your chosen course and help you get to know our teaching staff and your classmates.

The final step of your application journey before you start, our step-up events give you the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a Sunderland College student.

You will take part in interactive lessons following an example timetable, have lunch in our campus cafés and be given information about how to enrol on your course once you have received your GCSE results.

Bede Campus Bede Campus is our largest Sunderland College campus and home to some fantastic facilities including state-of-the-art science labs, a health simulation ward, a digital hub, a dedicated sixth form and our impressive Sports and Arts Academies.

Our investment project at Bede, supported by the Department for Education, has created a world-class technical skills and awardwinning Innovation Space. It includes a vibrant business hub and an Immersive Space – a fully integrated 360-degree environment with wall and floor projection to create shared VR environments.

The campus also boasts new industry standard media, broadcast, TV and radio production studios.

City Campus In the heart of Sunderland is our City Campus.

We have a range of industry standard equipment for everything from engineering and construction to professional cookery and hospitality. We even have a hair, barbering and beauty salon and a critically acclaimed restaurant, City Bistro.

Our engineering, manufacturing and automotive facilities at our City Campus offer some of the best training facilities in the region, including a 360-degree Immersive Suite, battery power training facility plus an automation and robotics hub with a hybrid automotive technical skills workshop.

Some of our latest developments include a business management suite and a boardroom space featuring interactive digital walls.

The Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy (HICSA) From 2025, our groundbreaking facility based in Sunderland will be home to our construction courses and the Gentoo Trades Academy.

Providing local people with the skills to build, retrofit and create homes for the future using modern methods of construction, HICSA boasts expansive open plan workshops, a show home for immersive learning and collaboration, classrooms and a ‘social hub’ including a cafe, a living staircase and exhibition space.

The Place A cutting-edge, dynamic hub for students, innovators and esports enthusiasts, The Place is home to the British Esports Federation, the UK’s national esports body, and our esports courses.

There are many opportunities for you to thrive, explore, develop, and learn at Sunderland College, but some days you may just want to enjoy campus life between your classes, meet your friends and relax in one of our cafés and outdoor areas, or take part in one of our youth activities and clubs.

Food & drink Grab a bite to eat and catch up with your friends. We have several eating areas around our campuses offering a wide variety of healthy and nutritional meals, sandwiches, drinks and snacks. All students, regardless of income, will have access to a free breakfast if needed.

Throughout 2024-25 we will be opening additional catering facilities at Bede campus including a new café, providing more options for our students to choose from.

Details of opening times are published on the Student Life intranet with weekly menus and any new offers. The College currently operates a cash and contactless payment system.

Enrichment We are committed to providing an environment where students can grow and develop by offering a wide range of wellbeing activities across our campuses. Join in volunteering and social action projects with the Duke of Edinburgh Award, National Citizenship Service and Good for Me, Good for FE, one of our college clubs and societies or take part in weekly themed events.

IT support We have many computers with an extensive range of software, available for students to use on a drop-in basis. Students are expected to improve their awareness of, and skills in, information technology (IT). There are many staff who can support you in your use of IT. The College has campus-wide Wi-Fi, which enables students to access the internet and complete their college work using their own, or college, devices.

All resources are free to borrow, we just ask that they are returned in good condition by their due date.

Careers Guidance Service We provide a free, accessible, impartial, and confidential Careers, Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) service to help current and potential students make well-informed choices about their course, progression, future learning opportunities and career goals.

Some of the services on offer include oneto-one appointments, career and CV writing workshops, and mock job interviews. Our CEIAG team is available at open events, by emailing guidance@educationpartnershipne. ac.uk or by calling 0300 770 8000.

Financial support Students aged 16-18 years old are not required to pay course fees on most of our full-time study programmes. You could be eligible for financial assistance while at college including help with course-related, transport and kit costs, childcare, free meals, or bursaries, depending on your circumstances.

Our Sports Academies give students the opportunity to combine their studies with an elite training programme with professional coaching in state-of-the art facilities, competitive matches, performance analysis and exclusive links with professional and semi-professional sports clubs.

Our Sports Academies are open to all Sunderland College students, so you don’t have to be studying a sports qualification to be involved! For example, you could be studying A-Levels, a T Level or a technical course such as Construction, Engineering or Health & Social Care while competing for your Sports Academy.

At City Campus you will have access to specialist welding and fabrication workshops and equipment, a machine shop and electrical engineering facilities with the latest CAD software, 3D printers, robot programming, CNC vertical machine centre to develop programming and operating skills.

OUR FACILITIES You will study this subject full time at our City Campus and will have access to all of the facilities at all of our campuses.

In addition, you will also have access to all of the facilities available to students, such as Area 51 student common room, on site cafeteria, Inner City Garden and much more.

APPRENTICESHIPS

An apprenticeship can help you get real work experience, gain ‘hands on’ skills and knowledge and study towards a qualification.

You can have a previous qualification like a degree and still start an apprenticeship. An apprenticeship is a real job where you learn, gain experience, and get paid.

At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have the qualifications, skills, and knowledge you need to progress in your chosen career.

To become an apprentice, you must be 16 or over, not be in full-time education and live in England.

Accept your offer: After you’ve applied, you will receive a conditional offer which will be subject to you achieving the entry requirements of your course. When you receive your offer, please accept this as soon as possible. You may also need to complete an audition, trial or assessment depending on the course you’ve applied for.

Financial support Did you know that we can help you with the cost of college?

Students aged 16-18 years old are not required to pay course fees on most of our full-time study programmes. If your household income is less than £30,000, we can support eligible students with transport to college as well as course-related costs such as uniform, kit, equipment, books, trips and UCAS fees.

If you are in receipt of Universal Credit or Child Tax Credit, and your income does not exceed the thresholds, your child could be eligible for free college meals.
