Uptown has retained its beauty and historic charm while gaining a vibrant mix of unique shops, restaurants, coffee houses, art galleries and convenient service businesses, all within an

easy stroll from nearby off-street parking. Uptown is home to the 72,000-square-foot Westerville Public Library, Otterbein University, the Hanby House Museum and the Temperance Row Historic District. Recognized by the National Park Service as a significant Underground Railroad site, the Hanby House was home to Bishop William Hanby, co-founder of Otterbein University, an abolitionist and a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad. His son, Benjamin, was the composer of more than 80 folk songs and

hymns, including “Darling Nelly Gray,” a popular song of the Civil War era, and “Up on the Housetop,” still sung by children worldwide. The house is also recognized by the United Methodist Church as one of three United Methodist Heritage Landmarks in Ohio. A video presentation, “From Servitude to Service,” tells the compelling story of the family. Costumed guides lead visitors through five rooms of antiques from the mid- to late 1800s, including Ben’s original flute, musical scores and artifacts. The kitchen garden, maintained by the Westerville Garden Club, features plants that were used for household purposes between 1850 and 1890. You can enjoy refreshments, historic decorations and special music during the Christmas Open House on the first Tuesday in December and the following weekend. Anti-Saloon League Museum 126 S. State St. 614-882-7277 x2160 www.wpl.lib.oh.us/ AntiSaloon Prohibition in the U.S. gave rise to gangsters, bootlegging and jazz. The Anti-Saloon League of America, headquartered in Westerville, was the group most responsible for the passage of the 18th amendment. The Westerville Public Library’s Anti-Saloon League Museum is housed in the League’s old headquarters building and contains artifacts and temperance materials printed by the ASL. Westerville was once known as The Dry Capital of the World and had one of the earliest prohibition ordinances in Ohio banning “spirituous liquors.” In the 1870s, this law was challenged by a series of events known as the Westerville Whiskey Wars. The building also houses the Westerville Local History Center with displays, photographs and materials on Westerville, including assistance with Westerville genealogy research. The second floor is home to the John R. Kasich Congressional Collection, consisting of documents, photographs and memorabilia donated by Gov. Kasich. The Anti-Saloon League Museum and the Local History Center are open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Saturdays closed for lunch 1 to 2). The Kasich collection is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Guided, self-guided and group tours are available and researchers are welcome. Temperance Row Historic District Vicinity of Park, Grove, Walnut and University Streets 614-794-0401 The homes on Temperance Row were built in the early 1900s by the leaders of the Anti-Saloon League of America, who brought their headquarters to Westerville, known for years thereafter as The Dry Capital of the World. national Prohibition, but also in constructing some of the most architecturally interesting homes of their day and our own. The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its significance in local, state, national and architectural history.

First Responders Park 374 W. Main St. 614-794-0401 Westerville’s history of community service dates back to 1860, when the city’s first fire department was formed. The dedication of fire, police and dispatch personnel, past and present, is celebrated in the inspirational setting of First Responders Park. In addition to a sculpture known as The Crossing by Steve Geddes and Bob Moore, the park includes a piece of World Trade Center Steel measuring 18 feet tall and 4 feet wide, and weighing 2.3 tons. This piece was part of the federal investigation into the collapse of the towers. It once spanned the 98th-101st floors on the north face of WTC 1, which was struck by a 767 aircraft at 8:46 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001.

Thomas State Nature Preserve or loop around the 13-acre Schrock Lake on nearly 3 miles of streambed and wetland nature trails. Numerous seasonal pools associated with the swamp forest communities are present and provide critical spring breeding habitat for amphibians and other wildlife.

The Arts in Westerville Hoover Reservoir and Nature Preserve 7600 and 3715 Sunbury Rd. Operated by Columbus Recreation and Parks 614-645-3300 recparks.columbus.gov Hoover Reservoir is owned and operated by the City of Columbus and features wetlands, walking trails, woods, wildlife areas and picnic facilities, as well as the Brent Hambrick Memorial Disk Golf Course. If fishing, pontoon boating or sailing is your interest, then you’ll enjoy the more than 3,000 acres of open water at Hoover. Located along the Hoover Reservoir and Little Walnut Creek, Hoover Nature Preserve is a vital resting spot for several species. The preserve is a great place for birding enthusiasts, with more than 33 different shorebirds that use the preserve during migration. The preserve also has a large 1,500-foot boardwalk so that guests can view the wildlife without causing harm to the environment and an observation blind for bird viewing at Mud Hen Marsh. Today, Inniswood is a 121acre scenic garden and nature preserve that is a continual source of inspiration for central Ohioans of all ages. Streams and woodlands filled with wildflowers and wildlife provide a majestic backdrop to the beautifully landscaped flowerbeds, rock garden and lawns. Inniswood Metro Gardens is free and open daily throughout the year from 7 a.m. to dusk. Visitors will enjoy the seasonal beauty of the gardens and natural areas as they stroll along 2 miles of trails and paved pathways. Otterbein Lake Along Alum Creek leisure path near Main Street and Collegeview Road 614-794-0401 The lake is a former dirt quarry that is being restored to a more wildlife-friendly state by a group of volunteers who started in 2003. An overlook allows safe fishing and lake observation.
