The district launched Hope Squad, a new peer-led initiative focused on mental health and suicide prevention/education, in fall 2021 at all three high schools. Hope Squad student leaders receive training on how to recognize mental health/suicide warning signs and understand procedures to properly report those concerns to an adult in a timely manner.

The district’s pathway programs feature labs that introduce high school students to real-world skills such as a phlebotomy lab that uses the same medical equipment phlebotomists train on — a synthetic arm with veins that contain a solution that simulates blood. it is our goal to help every child gain the knowledge and skills needed for college and career readiness. The district will open a new elementary school in the fall of 2022, followed by a new middle school in the fall of 2023. City Council represent residents as local government’s only elected officials, per the City Charter. As Westerville’s legislative body, City Council sets policy, establishes goals, approves and oversees the City’s annual budget. Formal Council meetings generally occur on the first and third Tuesday of every month, followed by informal work sessions on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. City Council also considers recommendations from eight different city boards and commissions, which evaluate matters of special interest in a number of different areas.
The First Division offers a Citizen’s Fire Academy to all Westerville and Blendon Township residents.
The Citizen Police Academy is a 12-week class designed to increase citizen awareness of the day-to-day operations of the division through instruction on topics relative to the role of law enforcement in the community. Participants will learn topics such as the division’s organizational structure, drug investigations and officer training. They also participate in activities such as mock building searches, officer shadowing and simulated traffic stops.

The popularity of the fire and police academies inspired the city to offer a Westerville Citizen Academy. The eight-week program offers a behind-the-scenes access to known and little-known city programs and services. Classes are interactive and include activities like exploring equipment, facility tours, demonstrations and handson activities. All residents are invited to participate, especially those who have an interest in serving the community on a Board or Commission.
