EXPLORE

Gahanna

Gahanna is centrally located just east of downtown Columbus, five minutes from John Glenn Columbus International Airport and easily accessible from I-70, I-71 and I-77.

There’s no place like Gahanna, the Herb Capital of Ohio. Gahanna has been named an Ohio Magazine BEST Hometown, one of the best places to retire by Black Enterprise Magazine AND was listed among the top places to live by Money Magazine. In addition, Realtor.com named Gahanna the “hottest zip code” two years in a row!

The name Gahanna is derived from an Indigenous word for “three creeks joining into one” and is the former name of the Big Walnut Creek. The City of Gahanna’s Official Seal refers to this confluence of three creeks with the inscription “Three In One.”

Give your child the world. We can help.

Gahanna History

Growing Gahanna

Founded in 1849 by John Clark, Gahanna has grown steadily through thoughtful development by honoring its history while building for the future. Gahanna’s Creekside area is an example of this continued growth as it is home to parks, restaurants, professional services, salons, home decor stores, and events such as the Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival® and the Mill Street Market.

In the mid-1800s Gahanna had a dry goods store, blacksmith, wagon shop, and a local saloon, making it a very popular stop for the weary traveler. It was a main throughway for farmers traveling to Columbus seeking goods, farm animals, and other necessities. The Mifflin Inn was the place for them to stop and get a good meal and sleep before getting back on the road. The original wooden trestle bridge crossing the Big Walnut River was a busy area for those traveling to and from New Albany, Pataskala, Zanesville, Blacklick, and cities beyond.

In the 1920s, the Big Walnut Country Club was formed by Urban League founder Nimrod Allen and several other prominent Black businessmen from Columbus. The club hosted golfing, dining, dancing, and outdoor activities to encourage good health and leisure.

Other areas of interest include Columbus Academy. Gahanna resident and president of Buckeye Steel, Samual Prescott Bush, would take part in the founding of the school. His future lineage would include George H. Bush and George W. Bush, the 41st and 43rd presidents of the United States.

The Lily Stone Bed & Breakfast
John Clark

The Rocky Fork Hunt and Country Club was founded off of Clark State Road in 1925. It now hosts a variety of athletic activities, including horse riding, swimming, baseball, skeet shooting, and ice skating. It is also a popular venue for weddings and corporate events.

Just South of Granville Street on High Street is the Gahanna Historical Society. The Society was created in 1965 by women in the community with the goal of preserving and telling the stories of Gahanna history. Three historical houses are on the property, including the John Clark House, the Log House, and the Lily Stone Bed & Breakfast.

The Lily Stone Bed & Breakfast was recently upgraded, and guests can choose to rent a room or the entire home. Along with its cozy, quaint feel, the Lily Stone features a full kitchen with a breakfast table, dining room, screened-in porch, and a large outdoor area with picnic tables. The location can’t be beat with easy walking access to parks, nearby restaurants, shopping, and local attractions.

Annual traditions are very important to the Gahanna community. In the Spring, third grade GahannaJefferson Public Schools students visit this Society’s historic site and hear stories of the “old days” while participating in activities reminiscent of chores children did in the early 1900s. In the fall, the annual Mill Street Market (formerly the Gahanna Flea Market) hosts more than 100 vendors, highlighting Gahanna’s small business community.

The CreeksideBlues & Jazz Festival

Local, fun, inclusive

For more than 25 years, music lovers have been flocking to Gahanna on Father’s Day weekend for the highly anticipated Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival®

Starting in 1999 as a small half-day event commemorating the opening of Gahanna’s Creekside Park, the festival now draws more than 20,000 visitors to the Creekside District and Park each year, thanks to sponsors like The Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center.

Festival-goers from more than 20 states traveled to the heart of Gahanna in 2024 for the locally, regionally, and nationally renowned entertainment that has become synonymous with this signature event.

The festival offers a wide range of music, including its namesake blues

and jazz, as well as soul, bluegrass, funk, rock, and more. The featured performers play on one of three different stages: Jazz Stage, Blues Stage, and Creekside Stage.

In 2025, visitors will hear from awardwinning artists, including Funk Music Hall of Fame and Exhibition inductee, Thumpdaddy, and a quartet led by Chase Porter who has previously performed on The Tonight Show

While enjoying the music, guests can dive into dishes from a variety of unique vendors, from savory options like Louisiana Grill Home of Bourbon Chicken and Medallens Gyros, to sweet treats such as The Peach Cobbler Factory

There will also be local retail vendors for artisan goods as well as locally brewed drinks. All alcoholic drinks are provided by Gahanna-based breweries and distilleries and will include cocktail mixers from Gahanna’s own Simple Times Mixers

Artists create murals on-site during the festival each year to fill the space with new visual art to admire. All the work is done in partnership with the Gahanna Area Arts Council and is showcased in the Open Air Art Studio, a staple of the festival since 2022.

The Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival® is made possible by the support of hundreds of volunteers, nonprofit organizations, sponsors, local business, and the City of Gahanna.

Musical Matriarchs

The 2025 Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival® features a lineup stacked with talented female musicians.

Saxophonist Jessy J headlines the Jazz Stage on Friday night and powerful vocalist Rachel Sepulvada, supported by The Lucas Holmes Quartet featuring Bryan Olsheski, takes the Jazz Stage Saturday night. Vanessa Collier, a returning blues artist, will also perform Saturday night on the Blues Stage.

On Sunday, Americana artist Angela Perley headlines the Creekside Stage, while the female-led gospel group, Nikki D & The Browns, takes the Blues Stage to close out the festival.

The HERB CAPITAL

Experience

The Herb Capital of Ohio celebrates its namesake throughout the year with special events and resources.

In 1972, the Ohio General Assembly passed a resolution to make Gahanna the “Herb Capital of Ohio.” The effort to define Gahanna as such was spearheaded by Jane “Bunnie” Geroux, a prominent historical society member and avid gardener. Gahanna quickly embraced the declaration by creating the Herb Education Center, now known as the Ohio Herb Center.

Ohio Herb Center

Located in the heart of Gahanna, Ohio – just minutes from the hustle and bustle of downtown Columbus – the Ohio Herb Center celebrates all things herbal year-round. Its mission is to offer a space where people can learn to incorporate herbs into their daily lives to enhance well-being.

The Ohio Herb Center showcases the city’s status as the Herb Capital of Ohio, with classes, hands-on workshops, and a gift shop filled with herb-inspired treasures including teas, bath and grooming products, books, dried herbs, and more.

The Ohio Herb Center is located in the historic Nafzger-Miller house, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and dates back to 1855. The center is also available to rent spaces for small meetings, baby or wedding showers, or group events.

The Herb Center offers classes and workshops on a variety of subjects; Tea Blending, Herbal Crafts, and Landscaping with Herbs are just a few of which to note.

Visit ohioherbcenter.org to learn more about classes, to schedule a group workshop, or to inquire about a rental space.

Herbal Cocktail Trail

Come one, come all, but most importantly, come thirsty. The Herbal Cocktail Trail takes visitors on a journey through a selection of Gahanna’s signature restaurants, breweries, distilleries, and pubs to enjoy herb-infused cocktails that live up to the city’s Herb Capital title. For the next girl’s night out, date night, or post-work happy hour, pick

a spot along the trail for a unique Gahanna experience.

Passports to mark your progress along the Herbal Cocktail Trail may be picked up at any of the participating locations or downloaded at visitgahanna.com Whether your goal is to get all the stamps or simply enjoy the flavors of the Herb Capital of Ohio, your experience will be unforgettable. And you won’t leave empty handed – to make sure it’s truly memorable, participants who receive six stamps win a one-of-a-kind Herbal Cocktail Trail branded gift.

At the end of the day, the Herbal Cocktail Trail is about making memories with friends and family in a way that only Gahanna can offer.

For more information, go to visitgahanna.com/herbal-cocktail-trail.

Herb’n Restaurant Week

Herb’n Restaurant Week brings the fresh flavors of the Herbal Cocktail Trail to a whole new level with herb inspired and infused meals made by Gahanna’s signature restaurants.

Kicking off on Herb Day, Herb’n Restaurant Week celebrates Gahanna’s heritage as Herb Capital of Ohio.

Sage, rosemary, thyme, and other herbs serve as inspiration for the unique, creative, and – of course – delicious dishes that grace the menus of participating restaurants. Local chefs have been called to incorporate herbal flavors into their dishes; but that doesn’t stop at just the entrees. Beverages, desserts, and appetizers are all fair game for herbinspired concoctions.
