Community Chamber hosts community events for every season Chamber Community Expo & Job Fair

We welcome over 400 visitors to the event each year and host the Expo with numerous partners to ensure the local residents get to see all that this community has to offer!

Community Organizations help and entertain residents and visitors alike Big Walnut Civic Association

It is best known for hosting Sunbury Sizzle & Sounds Food & Music Festival, which is held the first weekend after school begins in August, with an all-day lineup of local music, kid’s zone and beer garden on the Sunbury Square. To see this year’s musical lineup visit www.sunburysizzleandsounds.com.

During the summer the BWCA also hosts Movies on the Square. Local businesses sponsor a Saturday night movie for free family fun. For this year’s movie schedule, check out www.sunburyohio.org.

The Big Walnut Civic Association also hosts the July 4th Parade and amazing fireworks display in the evening to cap off Independence Day!

Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial www.OhioFallenHeroes.org

A fitting tribute to our loved ones who have lost their lives to the war on terrorism, the Fallen Heroes Memorial brings many visitors to Sunbury year-round. Dedicated in 2007, a memorial service is held in July each year so we never forget.

This memorial was established in 2005 by several local Veterans who wanted to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice by defending our freedom. It is the only recognized memorial in Ohio that is dedicated to all who died in the line of duty. The memorial is centered in the heart of Sunbury.

Greater Galena Civic Association

www.galenasummerfest.com The Greater Galena Civic Association is a not-for-profit organization whose primary goal is to promote our community and help local government plan for growth in the greater Galena area.

GGCA hosts the annual Galena SummerFest each August. Come out for great food, music and fun for the entire family.

Big Walnut Friends Who Share

www.BigWalnutFriends WhoShare.org Focused on improving the living conditions of residents in the Big Walnut School District, Friends Who Share accepts donations of non-perishable food items and gently used clothing, furniture and household items to give back to those in need, free of charge. A host of volunteers spend countless hours caring for our community, one jar of peanut butter at a time. Their new location is 100 West Cherry Street in the lower level of the Sunbury United Methodist Church.

4-H Clubs

www.4-H.org Just one of the many commitments this community makes to our youth is through

leadership and participation in our local 4-H clubs and our local fairs. Crafts, livestock and horticultural projects are just a few examples of what you will see from the Big Walnut youth at the Delaware County and Hartford fairs.

Delaware County Fair

www.delawarecountyfair.com This annual event takes place in September with many featured events. From rides, fair food, concerts and 4-H competitions, this fair is known for the historic Little Brown Jug. The Jug race first took place back in 1937 and is a showcase for harness racing. With an estimated 27,000 spectators, it’s an event you won’t want to miss!

The Hartford Fair

www.hartfordfair.com Located in the northwest corner of Licking County, the Hartford Fair is unique in comparison to other Ohio fairs, being the only independent fair in the state. Because Licking County does not have a county fair, the junior Fair includes exhibits from Licking, Delaware and Knox counties. Be sure to plan a visit to the “Biggest Little Fair in the World” in early August each year.

Sunbury Lions Club

www.sunburylionsclubofohio.org Labor Day belongs to the Sunbury Lions Club. They present the Annual Ox Roast.

They serve delicious sandwiches all day and offer fun for the entire family. The funds they raise from this great event help them to continue to do the work of their organization throughout the year.

Big Walnut Area Historical Society www.BigWalnutHistory.org

Big Walnut Area Historical Society was founded in 1993 to preserve the Myers Inn and to operate it as a museum. We collect local history of the towns and townships which make up the Big Walnut Local Schools and make local history available to the public.

Myers Inn Museum for a step back in time to visit the one room home of a founder of Sunbury, to visit a stage coach inn, and other parts of our local history which implements their school curriculum.

Special programs are provided for clubs, groups and others interested in our local history. We mark veteran graves at Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. Annually we honor those who have contributed to our mission. BWAHS provides local history on their website. From time to time we publish news articles or books on local history, assist others in pursuit of their genealogy or their house genealogy. We have no paid employees. All is done by volunteers. Join us!

We provide monthly meetings based on historical themes for our members and the public. Annually all third graders in the Big Walnut School see a 45-minute program in their school on the changes around the Sunbury Village Square, and then go to the www.SunburyBigWalnutChamber.com

Preservation Parks is committed to preserving Delaware County’s natural areas, which are home to thousands of native plant and animal species and are special places for people. We do this through extensive conservation efforts and through educational programs that extend beyond the parks and take us into classrooms in every school system – public and private – in Delaware County, with engaging programs that excite young people.

With nine parks that feature walking trails, diverse habitats, wildlife blinds and nature displays, Preservation Parks is your place to experience intimacy with nature and insert harmony and quietude into a busy world. The park district also offers a wide range of free nature programs for a variety of ages that aim to inspire understanding and appreciation of the natural world that surrounds us.

Area Attractions Get outside and get moving!

With our many growing community attractions it’s getting easier to get in some exercise and quality outdoor time at our public parks and trails!

Parks and Recreation

J.R. Smith Park in Sunbury acts as host to many little league activities and features a baseball diamond, picnic area, updated playground equipment and football and soccer fields. The Big Walnut Conservation Club also hosts little league activities.

Harlem Bicentennial Park, near Center Village, has a picnic area with a shelter house and baseball diamonds.

Ruffner Park in Galena has baseball diamonds, a picnic area with a shelter house and a nice playground.

McNamara Park, located in Genoa Township, boasts a playground, shelter house, soccer fields; and a direct connection to the Ohio to Erie Trail, a bike and walking path that runs through Genoa Township to the southern part of Galena.

The village of Galena is proud of their boardwalk on Hoover Reservoir, where you can enjoy the flora and fauna.

Kinslow Park Disc Golf Course was established in 2005 and recently underwent rehabilitation thanks to the generous support of both the Columbus Flyers Disc Golf Club and Village of Sunbury’s Parks Committee.

Check the Chamber’s website for local tournaments to enter the family in or just stop by for a relaxing hike through the woods while trying to come in under par. This course continues to be free to the public.

Walking distance from the disc golf course is Freedom Park on Ohio 61 in Sunbury behind Sunbury Church of the Nazarene. This park is a new undertaking by the volunteers at the church, and the initial phase of construction is complete with plans in place to expand the park over the next several years. Feel free to make use of the facility while taking children to team practices or just stop by on a sunny day for a picnic and some playground fun.

Walking Paths

Working with the Village of Sunbury, Genoa Township, the Village of Galena and Preservation Parks of Delaware County, the Delaware County Friends of the Trail (DCFT) is actively working to complete the Ohio to Erie Trail in our commu8 2019-2020 Sunbury Community Directory

nity. Below are several completed sections of the trail in Delaware County.

• The Meredith State Trail is a scenic 1.6mile paved trail northeast of Sunbury.

It runs from Meredith State Road to County Line Road. There’s currently no trailhead at this site so plan on biking to the trail.

• The Sandel Legacy Trail is a 0.6-mile paved trail in Sunbury that follows an old railroad bed from a trestle across Old 3C Highway to Big Walnut Elementary School. The trailhead is located just above Columbus St. just south of S. Vernon St. New segments of the trail are planned in the Village of Sunbury. www.SunburyBigWalnutChamber.com

Other recreational opportunities in the area include Alum Creek State Park 3615 N. Old State Rd., Delaware • The Galena Brick Trail is a 0.8-mile trail that follows a former rail bed from the Blackhawk Golf Course on Dustin Road to Miller Park extending north of Holmes St. • The Hoover Scenic Trail is a 0.6-mile paved multiuse trail that starts just south of Galena along Weiss Road and runs through the Hoover Nature Preserve south to Plumb Road. The nature preserve features a pedestrian bridge overlooking Hoover Reservoir, with incredible bird-watching opportunities.

• The Genoa Township Trail runs from Plumb Road south to Mt. Royal Avenue parallel to State Route 3. This paved 4-mile trail traverses the west side of Char-Mar Ridge Park and connects to the Westerville Trail system to the south.

Athletic Associations

Athletic associations in the Big Walnut community consist of the Girls Softball Association, Junior Baseball Association, Soccer Association, Youth Athletic Association, Youth Basketball Association and the Big Walnut Athletic Boosters.

A stagecoach town in the 1800s, the population was 4,400 at the 2010 census and is now over 5,000.

It is at the epicenter of new business and residential growth in eastern Delaware

County. The village is centered around a New England-esque traditional town square with the historic town hall located in the center of a village green. Myers Inn, one of the oldest structures in Sunbury, faces Sunbury Square and is home to the Big Walnut Area Historical Society. Many community events and festivals take place at the square year-round. Sunbury is located just north of Galena, within 10 miles of the cities of Lewis Center and Delaware.

Originally settled by American Revolution soldiers in 1809 as a milling center, the Village is best known for the Galena Shale Tile and Brick Company which operated from the 1890s until 1983. Galena’s historic New England-style downtown still boasts structures built in the 1820s and

Galena’s quaint, small-town feel with ample natural resources and amenities is particularly popular with cyclists, fishermen, kayakers, boaters and birders. As the north end of Hoover dries up in the fall and winter, mudflats are exposed that are a critical stopover for migrating birds on the North American Flyway.

Within the next few years it is estimated they will reach 3,000 residents. They enjoy rural living and are only 25 minutes from downtown Columbus. The Big Walnut School System, Olentangy School System, BST&G Fire Company and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department support their families. Berkshire Township is the home of Tanger Outlets Columbus and NorthStar community and country clubs. Close proximity to I-71 offers many opportunities for economic growth.

Trenton Township is located next to Sunbury Village in the eastern-most part of Delaware County. It has a population of approximately 2,500 residents. It is noteworthy as being the home of Sunbury’s crystalline erratic, a large rock deposited when the glaciers melted out of Ohio during the last ice age.
