More Than Just A Race!

Wellness Through Ballet

W

hen Tess Wells mentioned ballet in her article, A Universal Language, the neurons in my brain began to fire. Reading her piece caused me to reflect how ballet had a prominence in the lives of many famous athletes.

Did you know that Eddie George, Arnold Schwarzenneger and Michael Jordan, to just name a few, took ballet lessons?

Eddie’s lessons helped prepare him to maneuver on the football field so that he could more easily avoid being tackled. Arnold took ballet to help him sharpen his poses so that he could present himself in the best manner possible during bodybuilding contests. Michael worked with the Joffrey Ballet to improve his balance and rhythm. Ballet helped each of these athletes enhance his athletic prowess.

The many benefits of doing ballet often go unnoticed, especially when exploring its impact on wellness. One need not be a high-profile athlete to appreciate how ballet can influence physical and mental well-being.

Ballet and Physical Well-being Having good balance is vital for everyone regardless of age. But as we grow older, balance becomes an issue for many, and, as a result, the propensity to experience falls increases. One of the best ways to reduce the risk of falling is to build one’s core strength.

Core strength helps with posture control which enables us to become better at balancing. In addition to building core strength, ballet helps the body to achieve better alignment of muscles, the result being improved posture.

In addition to improving balance, ballet impacts the body’s muscular system. Ballet training improves the functioning of many different muscle groups through stretching. When one stretches, the muscles elongate, which reduces the risk of strains and sprains as well as reducing the risk of tearing.

Who does not want strong muscles? Ballet promotes strong muscles through repetitive movements in many ways like weight training will do but sans the barbells and kettlebells.

Ballet and Mental Health Many studies have been conducted to ascertain the relationship between ballet and stress. And to no one’s surprise, doing ballet enables one to better handle stress. A workout, whether in a barre class or through free flow movements on the floor, does enable one to handle stress more easily.

Many studies have been conducted to determine the impact of ballet and other dance activities on cognitive function. There appears to be evidence that doing ballet can delay the onset of age-related mental impairment including dementia.

With all of the benefits ballet provides, it’s not far-fetched to consider incorporating ballet moves as a part of your exercise routine. Tutus are optional.

Comfort in Community Dancer finds strength, support in fellow cancer survivors Inalee Tan is the owner of Thomas General Contracting and a former professional dancer. Over a three-year period, Tan battled back-to-back cancer diagnoses and a pelvis fracture, only to come back stronger and more positive than before. She credits her recovery and support in her journey to physical therapy, Healthy New Albany’s I Am Thriving project and the medically integrated fitness facility at The Ohio State University’s Health and Fitness Center in New Albany.

Her interview with Healthy New Albany magazine is edited for space and clarity.

After a lot of hard work in physical therapy, Tan was strong enough to take a trip out West with her family.

That all changed three years ago when I got diagnosed with cancer, endometrial cancer. I had the surgery, a full hysterectomy, and went back for the one-month checkup. Everything was great, cancer was gone, I was happy. Went back for three-month checkup, only two months later: new cancer.

From that experience I had to go through radiation and brachytherapy (where radioactive material is placed inside the body to fight cancer cells). Then my gynecologist/oncologist asked me to consider a clinical trial with chemo with the radiation, low dose chemo with radiation. Most likely, they said, it probably wouldn’t help me but … other women facing the same thing.

I thought about it and my husband told me it’s totally my decision. I decided it was the right thing to do. So, I went through the clinical trial with the chemo and the radiation and also the brachytherapy at the same time.

It threw my immune system really low, as most cancer survivors go through that. Mine wasn’t as drastic, I didn’t lose all my hair. My hair thinned out and it changed, my body changed and I was very weak. I still had a company that I owned that I www.healthynewalbanymagazine.com

The Beginning Originally, I performed professionally. Then I came back to join the family business, which is poured wall, excavation, and concrete and flatwork. But when I came off tour, originally, I had taken some bad falls during some practices, so my back always hurt me. I always knew I had that and just had to stay active and healthy.

“What are the plans? What are the things you think are standing in your way from achieving your goals?” Very uplifting, very motivating.

There was another coach who did mediation, yoga, oils. We did essential oils – incredible. Another coach was Molly Linek. She’s in nutrition and incredibly knowledge. She helped us know that we could do other things to still keep our body getting healthier and she was very forceful on that. Another, she was environmental, where you’re feeling down with the cancer and cancer treatments, nature is a great remedy. Chelsea Armstrong. She is the fitness coach for I Am Thriving. She’s a physical coach at the gym there at New Albany.

No therapy, couldn’t do any of that. As soon as lockdown was lifted, (my doctor) allowed me to return to therapy. That’s where I met (The Ohio State University physical therapist) Lori DeShetler. Amazing physical therapist, truly amazing. What she’s been able to help me accomplish over these past few months has been nothing but outstanding.

Learning to Thrive The real key when we talk about New Albany and that whole New Albany health organization was a project that they call I Am Thriving. Lori DeShetler is one of the coaches; she does the wellness aspect, not just your health but your whole being. She’s like a life coach in it and she did group sessions.

What’s really great about I Am Thriving, it’s not just the coaches and the teachers that we had there – it was the other women in this group. It’s cancer survivors, women of different backgrounds and cultures – the one thing we all have in common is that we’ve all had some kind of cancer. Either we’ve recovered from it or it’s still ongoing.

Teachers are musicians in and out of the classroom

Luckily, Donahoe soon found a pathway that better suited her passion for music. After a few years with the Air Force, she returned to school to pursue a music education degree from The Ohio State University. She now works as a middle school orchestra director for New Albany-Plain Local Schools.

“I just thought, ‘Gosh, I don’t know

if this is what I want to do for the rest of my life, I really miss music,’” she says. “I need to go back and start again.”

When Donahoe isn’t teaching at New Albany Middle School, the violinist keeps the music going as a member of the New Albany Symphony Orchestra.

“Most music teachers really love to play,” Donahoe says. “We all love mu-

“I actually would sneak out of the Air Force Academy against the rules to play in an orchestra,” she says.

sic. We all want to be a part of it in as many ways as possible and share that with the kids.”

Donahoe says that many music educators find opportunities to perform outside of school. Aaron Wilburn, the director of orchestras for New AlbanyPlain Local Schools, also performs with the New Albany Symphony.

Wilburn, a cellist in his first year with the symphony, says he spent years feeling too busy to make time for performing as he worked to grow the music program and strengthen its impact on students.

He credits Donahoe as helping him to recognize the importance of making time for his own musical endeavors.

Now, Wilburn compares the value of those extracurricular activities to putting on your own oxygen mask before assisting others. Finding time to stretch his musical muscles in turn makes Wilburn a better educator.

“It really is a great way to reenergize and rekindle your musical spirit, your creative spirit,” he says. “It’s made me a more energetic and passionate teacher.”

Seeing a teacher truly excited about a subject can help many students engage with the content. That’s true for music too.

She’s published a number of pieces targeting school-age musicians and says her students can serve as a “test audience” to determine if the music is interesting and appropriately challenging.

For these music educators, New Albany has fostered a dream environment where they can give back to students, perform and pursue additional projects.

“Lou Gehrig mentioned in his farewell speech that he was the luckiest man on earth,” Wilburn says. “If I could meet Lou, I think I would argue with him.

Our community is just such an amazing community for the arts.”

ew Albany is home to many prominent figures and organizations in the world of dance, including an executive director of a worldfamous professional dance company and a school that teaches dancers as young as 2 years old.

It hasn’t always been this way.

Broadway Bound Dance Centre became the first official dance studio in New Albany when it opened in 1994.

Nikki McKenzie says she and her sister, Chrissy Danflous, who co-own the center together, rented a space for $300 when Broadway Bound first began.

“In our first year, we had about 50 dancers, which we thought that was great,” McKenzie says. “Now we have 800 dancers, but at the time, we thought 50 was a wonderful start.”

Before studios like Broadway Bound, residents of New Albany had to find options outside of the community if they or their children wished to participate in dance. McKenzie and her sister grew up dancing in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s and had to find a studio in Gahanna.

Prospective dance students sometimes had to drive more than 10 miles to the nearest studio just decades ago, but

like there wasn’t a lot out here at that time,” Miller says. “Obviously, we have grown as the community has grown.”

At Broadway Bound, roughly 10 percent of students are enrolled on the competitive team. Unlike other studios and dance-related establishments, the New Albany Ballet Company does not have a competitive division. Miller says she wants her students to have just one competitor: themselves.

“They are taught to train to be better than they were yesterday, but not necessarily better than the child across the room,” she says.

Children aren’t the only ones benefiting from the flourishing New Albany dance scene. New Vision Dance Company, founded in Seattle in 2006 by Melissa Gould, artistic director for the company, has established a firm presence since settling in New Albany in 2013.

A nonprofit since 2017, New Vision has over 30 members, Gould says, all participating in the company on a volunteer basis. Gould says her goal has always been to serve adults who have dance in their hearts but who may not have pursued it professionally.

“Once they go to college,” she says, “they decide, ‘OK, well, you know, a dance career is hard, and it’s not the most secure thing in the world. So I’m going to become a nurse, or I’m going to become a school teacher, or I’m going to be a hairstylist,’ and they’re still amazing dancers. It’s just they don’t have that outlet anymore to do what they love.”

However, the environment Gould has built through New Vision is not the same as the dance environment she had growing up. An inescapable combination of ballet and jazz coupled with a less-than-ideal studio culture got in the way of the love Gould would eventually find for dance.

“I did my first recital, and what my mother tells me is that I told her, ‘I hate dance, dancing is stupid, I don’t ever want to dance again,’” she says.

She eventually grew fond of the art form and would major in it in college before pursuing other professional goals in dance. Still, Gould says her true love lies in choreography. Getting to watch other people live out the unique visions she has for their movements – hence,

the name of the nonprofit – is something that has always interested her.

“I coached my first cheerleading squad when I was 15. … I started teaching dance at, like, 18 years old,” Gould says. “Choreography was the No. 1 thing I was always concerned with in college as a dance major, … so even loving dance, I love choreography even more.”

Sue Porter, executive director of BalletMet, shares Gould’s love of choreography. Porter got involved with BalletMet in the late ’90s after she was invited to be on the board of trustees. She has remained involved with the organization since then and says spreading the beauty of dance throughout central Ohio alongside artistic director Edwaard Liang has been wonderful.

Despite having a downtown workplace, Porter has been a resident of New Albany for over 20 years and says the dance scene in the community has clearly expanded over the years.

“Certainly, I think that that dance has increased,” Porter says. “We are so lucky to have organizations … and other groups that are doing more work www.healthynewalbanymagazine.com

in this area, and I think it’s a credit to our whole community because it really takes a community’s support to support dance.”

Dance has found strong roots in New Albany in part because of new studios and companies and also, in part, because dance is inherently something anyone can find value in, Porter says.

“The wonderful thing about dance is it is movement, it is a wonderful form of expression, and quite honestly, anybody can do it,” Porter says. “I think that it’s a universal language.”

Parks for Everyone City of New Albany’s parks system to see major growth

F

rom 55-plus miles of leisure trails to more than 2,000 acres of parks and green space, the City of New Albany offers plenty of recreational opportunities. If that’s not enough, even more recreational offerings are on the horizon! Some exciting plans are in the works, including upgrades to neighborhood parks and the creation of brandnew destination parks.

Once these projects are complete, all City-owned neighborhood pocket parks will have been updated, with all remaining pocket parks still being maintained by their respective subdivision’s homeowner association.

Certainly, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the local economy

is something staff members are actively monitoring as it could impact the City’s ability to upgrade the parks within this timeframe. However, City Council has prioritized these efforts as they recognize how important these spaces are to residents and their overall quality of life.

It first became apparent in 2019 that upgrading the City of New Albany’s parks network was important to the community. City staff received many park-related comments from residents while conducting outreach for Engage New Albany, the City’s five-year strategic plan. That feedback highlighted the need for New Albany’s existing public parks to be examined and studied for potential improvements. Throughout 2020, staff worked with residents and community groups, such as the New Albany Joint Parks District, to create a Parks Framework Plan.

The Parks Framework Plan includes an assessment of the City’s current parks and equipment, analysis of the accessibility of the City’s parks and trail network, and recommendations for improvements for each neighborhood park. The recommended improvements include updating playground equipment, building accessible features so people of all abilities can use the playgrounds, and improving amenities such as seating and landscaping.

These improvements began in 2021 with Sumption Park in The Links neighborhood. The City of New Albany partnered with The Links HOA to install new equipment, a shade structure, seating benches and a new accessible play surface. Five more neighborhood park upgrades are planned in 2022, including Byington, James River, North of

Framework Plan also addresses the creation of three new destination parks to be built in New Albany in the coming years.

Taylor Farm Park

The Taylor Farm site, which had been a farm dating back to the 1800s, is

a nearly 100-acre tract of land bounded by the Rocky Fork Creek, DublinGranville Road, Harlem Road and state Route 161.

City Council approved funding in early January 2021 for design work and improvements. The first phase of the

project, scheduled to be completed later in 2022, includes three miles of leisure trails, seating in the park, landscaping around designated wetland areas and parking for visitors.

City staff members have not yet determined how many phases there will be in the project overall. Taylor Farm Park will be a work in progress, with new facilities being added as capital funds allow.

Rose Run Park Phase II

The City of New Albany just celebrated the dedication of Rose Run Park on Founders Day last year, but we are already in the planning stages for the park’s second phase to be built across Main Street close to Village Hall.

Rose Run Phase II will include a beautiful new Veterans Memorial with a hero’s walk, plaza and water feature that will be a wonderful new public space for reflection. This Veterans Memorial will be right next to Founders Field, the community’s first cemetery, to further honor our history, and the park

will be supported by up to 50,000 additional square feet of commercial space around what was the Duke & Duchess station on the corner of U.S. 62 and Dublin-Granville Road.

There is currently no timeline for construction, but the City of New Albany is excited to see this project take the next steps towards reality.

Kitzmiller Wetland Park

Kitzmiller Wetland Park is the third destination park in our long-term plans. This park, which will be built on land that was acquired more than a decade ago between Kitzmiller Road Veterans Memorial at Rose Run Park Phase II and U.S. 62, will include active and passive areas with walking trails, lots of play spaces and climbing structures for kids, sports courts, and possibly even a place for skateboarders.

This park will remain in the planning stages for at least another couple of years, giving us an opportunity to plan the park in a way that best fits New Albany’s long-term needs.

Counting the Rocky Fork Metro Park to our northwest, in which we’ve invested more than $4 million, nearly one out of every five acres of our land is devoted to parks and green space.

That’s more than 2,000 acres, and that number will only continue to grow.

A Lifetime of Curiosity NPR host to interview H.R. McMaster for NA Lecture Series

ary Louise Kelly has done her fair share of traveling and inperson engagements as an NPR correspondent but not lately, due to the pandemic. So, traveling to New Albany for a March 10 interview with H.R. McMaster for the New Albany Lecture Series is something she’s looking forward to.

“Just the ability to see someone’s face and their reaction in real time and read the body language,” Kelly says. “Even bigger than that is having a live audience who becomes kind of a third participant in the conversation as you’re gauging the energy of the room, what they’re responding to, and that informs how I choose to pace my questions.”

Live, in-person events have a different energy than the interviews she facilitates as a co-host of NPR’s All Things Considered, Kelly says.

Kelly started on NPR’s national security beat in 2004 and worked as a national security correspondent for 10 years before anchoring All Things Considered. She’s reported on the CIA, terrorism, wars and foreign policy.

In addition to her work at NPR, Kelly has lectured at both Stanford University and Harvard University, her alma mater, and is a contributing editor at The Atlantic. She has moderated interviews at a variety of forums around the world.

led her to realize the power she had as a reporter as she asked the questions her classmates wanted answers to – and the vice principal answered.

Kelly says she’s kept that same curiosity today.

“I feel that the ability to ask a genuine question about something you’re curious about and you want to understand: Why do we do it this way?

Could we do it better? Why does this work this way? And having them take my questions, not because they owe me anything, because there’s a huge audience of NPR listeners and reader who are invested in that question and they deserve that answer, pushing for that answer has always been really fascinating to me and really feels like a privilege,” she says.

That curiosity can be seen in Kelly’s educational path. She earned degrees in government, French language and literature from Harvard in 1993 and, later, a master’s degree in European studies from the University of Cambridge before embarking on her career.

“I’m still trying to figure out what 26

I want to do when I grow up. I keep exploring and writing books and writing other things and there’s a million things I want to do, but I keep coming back to journalism,” Kelly says. “I love asking questions. I love getting to see the world. I love getting to write about it and then engage in a conversation with our audience. All of that brings me joy. But I’ve seen a lot of things around

the world along the way and I think that hopefully has helped me become a better journalist.”

Year-round Abundance Farmers Market a community gem

he New Albany Farmers Market will return to Market Square this summer for its 12th season. The summer market season begins June 23 and runs through Sept. 15.

For 13 weeks, the outdoor market brings a variety of vendors each Thursday from 4-7 p.m. The Healthy New Albany connection makes the market unique as the organization is able to offer additional programming during market hours, says market manager Emily Snyder.

“Last summer we offered on-site produce pickling classes and a nature class for kids,” she says. “We hope to offer new and exciting programs this summer.”

According to Snyder, a typical market has around 45 vendors, plus a few

we’ve lived in the same house and I’ve gone to New Albany schools my entire life. It’s cool I got to stay in the same community growing up.”

Being a part of that community has helped Sellars to make close friends and find ways to give back. She kept in contact with her Girl Scouts troop throughout school, and the group worked together on projects such as packing food up for people without housing and making blankets to give to the Nationwide Children’s Hospital at Christmastime.

The group’s biggest project, she says, was helping clean the wetlands around New Albany.

“We just started by picking up the trash around the wetlands,” Sellars says.

“As we entered high school, we started helping build paths so that the wetlands were easier for people to walk on and there are more trails as well as more area www.healthynewalbanymagazine.com

hen the New Albany Women’s Network (NAWN) considers which graduating high schoolers to award its annual scholarship to, it looks not only for academic excellence but for candidates who exemplify student citizenship.

“We look for students who are making a difference inside and outside of the community,” says Terri Erlenbach, the president of NAWN. “We’re looking for ways to help them and reward them for what they’ve done so far. To help them continue their dreams and education at a higher level.”

These qualities certainly apply to the recent scholarship recipients Jadyn Sellars and Meghana Karthic. The two graduated from New Albany High School in the class of 2021.

“I love New Albany – I feel that it gave me a lot of opportunities,” Sellars says. “I have grown up in New Albany my entire life. My whole family is there,

Like Sellars, Karthic was also born and raised in New Albany and says that her admiration for NAWN and its impact makes the award more meaningful.

“It’s cool to be a part of that community of women and recognized by a program I really respect in New Albany,” she says.

After graduation, Karthic enrolled at John Hopkins University where she is studying computer science. Her interest in the subject first began during her freshman year at New Albany High School through her involvement with Technovation, a nonprofit that supports girls as they code apps to address realworld problems.

“I would do community service but I wanted to take an extra step to figure out how I could make more of an impact on my community,” Karthic says.

“When I participated in Technovation, it really opened my eyes as to how much computer science and coding and technology can improve society. It’s why I’m sticking with it in college and beyond.”

With Technovation, Karthic helped develop an app called Novo, which consolidates resources to aid those affected by the opioid epidemic. Karthic now works as a lead student ambassador for Technovation. Her roles have inwww.healthynewalbanymagazine.com

I began playing the violin in first grade. I saw it on Sesame Street.

cluded teaching girls in inner city Columbus how to code. Karthic used her own STEM knowledge during her senior seminar project, which involved modeling hypersonic aircraft for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Karthic’s involvements show a dedication to raising awareness for issues specific to Ohio. As president of NAHS’ Girl Up Club, which raises awareness of human trafficking, she organized a concert called Break the Chains to educate others about the topic.

Sellars has also continued her charitable work in college at the University of South Carolina where she is studying international business and marketing.

“I got involved in a sorority and I’ve been able to do some of the stuff like I did with Girl Scouts.”

Sellars says, “I’m glad I’m able to still be philanthropic in my new community.”

Sellars still looks back fondly on he time in New Albany and remembers it as a community ready to support and encourage students.

“People want to help you, especially in a community like New Albany,” she says. “Get involved, but don’t just get involved with things to put them on your resume or because it looks good. Get involved because it’s something you’re passionate about and can put your time and energy into for the betterment of yourself and the future.”

Caribbean Cuisine Food is medicine in chicken curry recipe

fter experiencing migraines, New Albany resident and mother Raushanah Clarke took to homeopathic treatments in search of natural remedies. After seeing and experiencing the benefits of using natural resources to mitigate symptoms, Clarke developed healthful lifestyle habits for herself and her family.

Homeopathy is based on the idea that a body can cure itself and natural ingredients can enhance the body’s normal healing and self-regulation processes.

“A lot of people don’t want to be on medications for the rest of their lives,” Clarke says. “That’s where homeopathy comes in: there’s never any side effects, you can use it with regular pharmaceuticals, babies can use it, the elderly can use it.”

Clarke also values natural ingredient-based cooking. She makes healthful meals every day with organic vegetables and lean meat, and tries to stay away from white products such as white flour and white bread, which are often lacking

Healthy New Albany’s Empty Bowls event returns this year, allowing guests to paint and decorate their own ceramic bowls. The bowls are then fired in a kiln and available for pick-up in approximately a week.

All profits made from purchases will support foodrelated charitable organizations. The event will run during summer movie nights June 25, July 22 and August 12.

Clarke’s husband, Sheldon, was born in Jamaica and the cuisine associated with his Caribbean heritage has proven to be a great fit for this healthful approach. Caribbean food often emphasizes natural ingredients and incorporates significant amounts of plants and fish.

Also featured in her Jamaican chicken curry recipe is turmeric, a spice which may have health benefits such as combating inflammation and even killing toxic cells.

“Food is going to be your ultimate medicine,” Clarke says. “The way you feed yourself is going to determine your health every day.”

With a colorful assortment of protein, vegetables and natural ingredients, Clarke’s recipe is a great dish to fill up on while boosting your body’s health.

Jamaican Curry Chicken Ingredients • 2-3 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts • ½ cup Jamaican curry powder (can be purchased at an international grocery store or online) • 1⁄3 cup coconut aminos • 1 tsp. garlic powder • 1 tsp. onion powder • ½ tsp. sea salt (or to taste) • ¼ tsp. black pepper • 1⁄3 tsp. thyme (roughly 3 sprigs) • 1-2 scotch bonnet (habanero)

peppers, depending on your spice preference 1 red or yellow bell pepper, chopped 1 onion, chopped 1-2 tsp. avocado oil ½-1 cup water

Directions • Marinate the chicken in the above ingredients for no less than two hours.

Can be left to marinate overnight.

• Scrape marinade ingredients off chicken as much as possible but set

aside and save.

• Put 1-2 tsp. avocado oil in a pan, heat until the oil is hot, and add the chicken. Cook the chicken until brown on one side then flip and brown the other side.

• Add ½ cup-1 cup water and bring to a boil.

• Add the rest of the marinated ingredients.

• Turn the heat down and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked all the way through.

Pandemic Pushes Technology Ohio State research provides test results in seconds

“When we first started the trial, there was a lot of concern about COVID research since this was before the vaccine,” says Dr. Matthew Exline, the lead researcher and a professor of internal medicine at OSU. “So we needed a situation that was controlled so that our research workers weren’t putting themselves in jeopardy.”

The ICU gave researchers an ideal test subject population.

“Obviously, by the time someone gets into the ICU, we already kind of know they have COVID,” says Exline.

“The ultimate use of this technology would have broader applications.”

The research team found a distinguishable pattern detected in test results from 16 of the 18 COVID-19 patients and in only a handful of the non-COVID-19 patients. That pattern disappeared as patients cleared the virus. www.healthynewalbanymagazine.com

fter two years of nasal swab and spit tests, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has developed a unique technology to rapidly identify COVID-19: a breath test.

Not only is the test less invasive than swabs, but potentially more accurate than PCR or rapid tests. This unprecedented method of identifying COVID-19 provides results in seconds by using nanosensors to identify and measure specific biomarkers found in the breath.

Dr. Pelagia-Irene Gouma had been developing a breathalyzer technology to detect influenza in patients, but with the onset of the pandemic, she recognized the impact her research could have for identifying the COVID-19 virus, too.

The first step was to conduct research affirming the technology’s effectiveness in detecting COVID-19. Though initially difficult to study due to concerns of spreading the virus, researchers were

As we run it on the machine, the signal comes to a point, and then drops, and then comes to a second point, and drops, so it looks like a W.” Paying homage to her Greek heritage, Gouma named this the omega pattern.

The breathalyzer test hinges upon nanotechnology chips that are specific for different gases passing over them.

The COVID-19 test uses a chip to detect nitric oxide and its interaction with other chemicals found in the breath. That interaction is what creates the omega pattern unique to COVID-19.

Those results come in as little as 15 seconds.

What makes this breathalyzer in particular unique and exciting, Exline says, is that simply swapping out one chip for another enables the device to detect different diseases.

With the ICU trial providing evidence that this technology can be used to detect positive cases of COVID-19, the team is now developing methods to allow widespread use of it.

To get there, the team must research what the breathalyzer results look like for people who are healthy and for people who are at home with a likely milder case of COVID-19 compared to those seen in the ICU. Exline’s team is also working to refine the technology to make it smaller and more accessible.

“What excites us is that we can develop a technology where you can get an answer very quickly. It can give you a primary answer like, ‘Hey you look good,’ or, ‘This is a little abnormal, you should go and see a doctor.’” Exline says. “That’s what we’re trying to work towards. We don’t have it yet, but this work in the ICU is an important first step.”

The researchers have applied for emergency use approval of the technology from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

New Albany Food Pantry Navigates “the New Normal” W

e continue to see the impact that the last 18 months have had on struggling families in our community.

Forty-two percent of the households we served in 2021 were visiting the pantry for the first time.

The economy continues to be a contributing factor to pantry operations. We are facing increased prices and decreased

inventory at Mid-Ohio Food Collective. Community support remains critical to provide necessary pantry provisions to many New Albany-Plain Local Schools families.

Wellness Innovation Dr. Selena Budge is on the cutting edge of injury prevention

I

t’s inspiring to see someone aligned in their purpose, committed to what they know is right and determined to put their unique talents to work helping others. Budge is raising the bar on injury prevention, and her expertise is matched only by the love for her work and genuine desire to help others.

Budge became interested in injury risk analysis and injury prevention programming after suffering an ACL injury as a collegiate basketball athlete. She became dedicated to investigating the causes of athletic injuries and strategies to minimize their likelihood. She received her doctorate degree in physical therapy from The Ohio State University with a research emphasis on the biomechanics of ACL and lower extremity athletic injury and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. Budge is a sports injury prevention specialist with extensive expertise in non-contact sports injuries. She has evaluated and created programming for thousands of athletes at the high school, collegiate, professional and Olympic levels.

Budge has received national grant funding for her work in ACL injury-related research. Her specific research focus includes clinical and biomechanical risk factors for athletic injuries, prediction and prevention of ACL injury, and movement analysis methods. She has presented her work on athlete injury risk profiling and reduction nationally and continues to lecture on these techniques at the undergraduate and graduate school level.
