One of the City of Dublin’s top priorities is community engagement. It’s our commitment to keep our residents and corporate community engaged in everything happening around Dublin.

The State of the City address is one of the ways in which we do that. It’s our chance to report back to you about the successes and challenges of the previous year, while looking ahead to progress to come in 2016.

This year’s State of the City will take place Thursday, March 3, at the Wendy’s Company Thomas Conference Center, 1 Dave Thomas Blvd., in Dublin. As in years past, we will host a community reception from 6-7 p.m., with the presentation commencing at 7 p.m.

At this year’s presentation, we’ll be releasing the results of the triennial Community Attitudes Survey. Conducted in January, the survey is designed to gauge residents’ perceptions of local government. The City uses the data in guiding policy decisions to enhance and continue high-quality service delivery.

Not only does the survey allow residents to rate Dublin as a place to live, work and retire, but the information also serves as a barometer for City Council in planning and setting priorities for Dublin.

Sharing information such as this through the State of the City presentation provides a great opportunity to engage your elected officials and the staff leadership team, and to learn more about our priority projects. We look forward to seeing you in attendance.

Speaking of our leadership team, I hope that you will find the story on page 14 valuable in meeting the people who are helping to implement policy set forth by City Council and shaping the future of Dublin. A Team Player Recreation Services director found her calling for municipal service through love of sports

racey Gee has been a fixture at the Dublin Community Recreation Center for 20 years, but the foundation for her interest in the industry goes back even farther.

“There is a strong connection between my experiences as a youth athlete and the work that I do now,” says Gee, recreation director for the City. “Playing team sports, enjoying the outdoors and enjoying learning new things have made me the person I am, and providing those opportunities for others is basically what our division does for a living.”

As a child growing up in Enon in western Ohio, Gee played soccer and softball.

In high school, she played basketball.

“Usually, I was always in some sports season,” she says.

Her love of physical activity led her to choose to major in exercise science at Miami University. After earning her bachelor’s degree, she stayed to obtain a master’s in exercise science and health appraisal and enhancement. Initially thinking she would find herself in a career in athletic training or cardio rehabilitation, Gee entered into municipal recreation by chance.

“I didn’t know that it existed when I was in school,” she says.

After graduating, she served as the corporate fitness services director at YMCA of Central Ohio from 1993-1996. While working with a youth mentorship program called Future of America, she met the then-director of Dublin’s Parks and Recreation department, Janet Jordan, while serving on a committee. The introduction eventually led to her first job with the City in 1996: fitness and wellness program supervisor.

Gee’s time spent at the City has taught her how rewarding public service can be.

While she has heard immediate feedback from appreciative community members, she’s also heard praise over the long term. She recalls members who came back years later, sometimes after college or with their kids, to share what kind of impact the rec center had on their lives. www.dublinlifemagazine.com

As Gee moved up the ladder in recreation services, the City of Dublin grew and changed. Programming expanded along with the city.

“There’s been a sizeable amount of growth,” Gee says.

When the Dublin Community Recreation Center opened in 1996, some residents didn’t even realize that some of its amenities were a possibility, Gee says. She appreciates the City’s willingness to take risks.

“It’s nice to be in a forward-thinking community,” she says.

Gee worked with her department to create policies and procedures for the rec center, and she’s proud of the work it did in assessing community need. Many things they put into place are still in effect now.

Gee became director of recreation services in June, and since then, she and the department have been working to assess the community’s needs.

“We’re always looking for new ways to help residents reap the benefits of parks and recreation,” she says.

While most of the programming so far has been focused in key facilities such as the rec center and community parks such as Coffman, Darree and Scioto, the department is working closely with colleagues in park operations, park development, events and volunteer services to develop programming that reaches even further into the community, including neighborhood parks, Gee says.

“We hope to do the same with outreach to Dublin businesses,” she says. “With so many small businesses in Dublin, we think we can be helpful with bringing some of our knowledge and services to the business community.”

While Gee is a leader at work, she also exhibits some of the same qualities at home, when she plays video games such as World of Warcraft. A self-described video game nut, Gee has been playing games since the early 2000s, favoring massively multiplayer online games. It’s common for her to exchange gamer tags with people she meets.

“It’s becoming a business networking tool,” she says.

A natural introvert, Gee says she has developed extroverted tendencies as a result of her career path. Other hobbies including reading fiction and watching movies help her recharge after time spent at work.

Her husband, Conan, is an application engineer in the IT department for Chipotle Mexican Grill. They have a 2-and-a-halfyear-old daughter, Miranda, and two cats: Mushu, a female Snowshoe, and Zeus, an 18-pound male Maine Coon.

Dublin’s Leadership All in, All the Time!

F

or much of the City of Dublin leadership team, the idea of having a career in public service was a seed planted early in life.

“My mom and dad volunteered a great deal in my hometown,” says City Manager Dana McDaniel, who grew up in Franklin, Ohio. “As a result, I gained an appreciation and a passion for local government. Through military service and internships early in my career, I was hooked on public service and learned that to be a public servant you have to be all in, all the time! I think it’s that challenge that continues to drive my passion for service.”

Assistant City Manager Michelle Crandall relates a similar experience.

“When I was 6 years old, my parents wouldn’t let me walk along a section of our rural roadway in Doylestown, Ohio because part of the blacktop had been washed away, revealing a sharp metal culvert running down to a stream,” she says. “My mom suggested I write a letter to the village mayor asking that the roadway and culvert be repaired, which I did, with a little help from my parents.”

A few days after she mailed the letter, the mayor of Doylestown, a Chippewa Township trustee and engineer knocked on the Crandalls’ door. They were there to take a look at the roadway and discuss the issue. The following week, the repairs were made.

“That experience left an impression on me all the way through college of how effective local government could be and how close it puts you to those you serve,” Crandall says. “I always knew that local government was a place where I could make a difference in people’s lives, and I owe it all to three public servants who took time out of their day to visit a 6-year-old.”

Angel Mumma, the City’s finance director, had been looking for a part-time job while in college and ended up as a clerk for the City of Gahanna’s Mayor’s Court. The job would eventually lead to different opportunities, culminating in Mumma serving as Gahanna’s finance director before obtaining the same position with the City of Dublin in 2011.

“While it wasn’t planned, I quickly realized that public service, especially at the local government level, is where the rubber meets the road,” she says. “It is so rewarding to know that what we, as an organization, do every single day contributes to the health, safety and welfare of each of our residents.”

Parks and Recreation Director Matt Earman was 15 years old when he began working for a regional parks department in northern Virginia. He says the experience gave him many opportunities to serve the public.

“I knew at an early age that this was my calling,” he says. “I chose the path of parks and recreation due to my love for the outdoors and the inherent benefits it has to enhance the public’s quality of life in so many ways.”

For Development Director Donna Goss, the connection was made closer to home.

“I first learned about the power of local government when I was 8 years old,” Goss says. “Our councilwoman, Florence Fitzgerald, lived right around the corner. She was responsible for starting a fund appeal to bring 16 county servicemen home for the holidays from Vietnam. One of them was my brother Phil.”

It’s those kinds of lessons, positive attitudes and commitments that drive the professional staff McDaniel has assembled on his senior leadership team. These are the people who put the policies set forth by Dublin City Council into action. Below are snapshots of the individuals who make up this dynamic team, all empowered by their passion for public service.

Dana was named the fifth city manager for the City of Dublin in December 2014 following a distinguished 27-year career with the City. He earned his bachelor’s degree in public administration from Miami University and his master’s in public administration from The Ohio State University. Terry Foegler has nearly 40 years of experience leading a range of planning, development and urban revitalization initiatives.

From 1990 to 1996, a time of extraordinary growth for the City, Terry served as assistant City manager and director of development. He helped advance many key initiatives during that time that continue to inform Dublin’s policy-making, such as longterm infrastructure planning and funding (including the City’s first sewer and water rate studies, and its first use of tax increment financing); instituting the five-year capital planning process; spearheading the City’s first strategic economic development blueprint (the “Mt. Auburn Study”); and initiating the cost of services study, a tool still used today to help establish a rational framework for various fees and charges.

Terry rejoined the City of Dublin as City manager in 2009, in part due to his growing interest in new challenges facing local communities posed by dramatic changes in development patterns and demographics. In response to these trends, Terry helped the City develop and envision the Bridge Street District initiative. Today, Terry continues to provide leadership in this unique initiative, with his primary focus being on the implementation elements of February/March 2016 • 15

the City’s Vision for the Bridge Street District. Terry also serves as chair of the Urban Land Institute’s Columbus District Council, where he has had an active leadership role in the central Ohio region’s insight2050 initiative.

While working in the commercial banking industry, Donna became interested in real estate management and development. She founded a property management business in Ithaca, N.Y., which she successfully owned and operated for 12 years. During that time, she co-owned and renovated several historic buildings, including four properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Tompkins County, N.Y. Donna joined the City team last July. In her previous role as director of real estate management, community engagement and economic development for Ohio University, she collaborated with the City while planning the Dublin campus of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. She previously held positions in internal communications and facilities services for Cornell University.

She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in higher education public policy at OU and earned her bachelor of science and master’s degrees in business administration from the University of Maryland University College, where she focused on strategic and entrepreneurial management.

In addition to playing the piano, Donna enjoys the creative arts and produces pottery and tile in her home studio.

DOUGLAS MCCOLLOUGH Chief Information Officer “While Dublin is a historic community, it is quite young as a City. Doug began his professional career as a musician after attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied jazz composition. He says music has informed the way he organizes information, and the discipline attained from creating jazz arrangements allows him to use creativity to organize teams. Following a stint in the music industry, Doug returned to school, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in information systems and operations management from the University of Toledo, and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame. He holds certifications in Information Technology Infrastructure Library and as a Project Management Professional.

Prior to joining the Dublin team, Doug held positions within the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Department of Commerce, Industrial Commission and Department of Medicaid. Most recently, he served as director of IT for the city of Richmond, Va., where he 16 • February/March 2016

led the establishment of the IT Governance Model establishing prioritization of enterprise-level IT projects and applying auditable accountability to investment decisions. He also has worked as a project manager for Nationwide Insurance and Alcatel-Lucent.

He and his wife, Angela Abram, have four children. In his spare time, Doug enjoys running. He recently completed his fourth marathon. He describes himself as a great cook and a terrible golfer.

ANGEL MUMMA Director of Finance “My favorite thing about Dublin is its beauty.

She is a member and secretary for the Municipal Finance Officers Association of Ohio, a member of the board of trustees of the Ohio Government Finance Officers Association and a board member of the Central Ohio Risk Management Association. Angel was named CFO of the Year by Business First in 2011.

Angel and her husband, Matt, are the parents of a daughter, Emerson. Angel annually participates in Pelotonia – the bike tour to raise funds for cancer research – and calls it an important and meaningful experience.

The department of public works includes engineering, streets and utilities operations, fleet management and facilities management. Prior to joining the Dublin team, Megan worked for the Ohio Department of Transportation as a deputy director responsible for delivering ODOT’s nearly $2 billion annual construction program. While working at ODOT, she also served as administrator, assistant administrator, project engineer and intern. She previously was employed as the deputy director for the Columbus Department of Public Service, where she managed 700 employees and oversaw the five-year Capital Improvement Plan.

Sandra is the City of Dublin’s first director of community relations, having served since the position was created in 1990. A graduate of OSU, Sandra earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism, specializing in public relations. HOMER C. ROGERS JR. Director of Human Resources “I really love the pride and sense of community in Dublin. Homer comes to the City of Dublin from the Ohio National Guard, where he worked as the director of human resources for the Ohio Adjutant General’s Department. A retired colonel with the Guard, he directed a 38-person staff, which provided administrative support to more than 3,400 federal, state and military employees who in turn supported more than 17,000 part-time soldiers and airmen. He also has served as a deputy Army military personnel officer and a battalion commander.

A native of Dayton, Homer earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Dayton and his master’s in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College. He also has completed the initial coursework to attain a master’s in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University. He was elected to chair the National Guard Bureau’s Human Resources Advisory Council and served as the first chairman of the National Guard Bureau Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Advisory Council.

Homer and his wife, Tammy, have two grown children, Luke and Erin. In his spare time, Homer enjoys studying genealogy and has assembled a family tree of more than 2,600 relatives. He also enjoys riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

HEINZ VON ECKARTSBERG Chief of Police “I chose to make public service my career 33 years ago because I enjoy being part of making our community safe, and a great place to live. I think public service is one of the highest professional callings.”

Heinz has been a member of the Dublin Police Department since February 1983.

He was promoted to chief of police in March 2011, and has served in many areas of the police department during his career. Most recently, prior to his promotion, he served as services bureau commander overseeing the community education unit – including DARE and school resource officers – and the investigative section, and coordinated safety for all of the City’s special events, including the Dublin Irish Festival.

Heinz is a graduate of Franklin University with a degree in organizational leadership, and is also a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command, the University of Virginia’s LEAD program for senior executives and the Ohio Police Executive Leadership College. He serves as a police management consultant for the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police and chairs both the Advisory Services Policy and Legislative Affairs committees for OACP.

Staff well-being is a priority for Dublin schools

“We really led school districts within the state,” says staff wellness coordinator and Treasurer/Chief Financial Officer Stephen Osborne. Osborne has managed the program since it started.

Each school year starts off with a biometric screening process for any staff members who want to participate. About two-thirds – or 1,200 members – of staff sign up for the program each year, Osborne says. This screening looks at cholesterol, weight, body mass and other factors.

Participants can compare their results from year to year, and see where they’ve improved.

“We’ve identified (for) many folks … conditions they weren’t aware of,” Osborne says. “Folks will come up and thank us; they didn’t realize their cholesterol or their blood sugar was high. They start taking medication, and they save money.”

The staff wellness program organizes several activities throughout the school year, including an Amazing Race-inspired challenge around Historic Dublin in October. The district also works with area gyms to offer savings for anyone who participates in the program, and sponsors 5Ks, Zumba and other fitness classes. www.dublinlifemagazine.com

“Personally, it motivates me to work out on a consistent basis. It takes place in the winter months, when we all tend to be more sedentary. It’s a friendly competition that also promotes staff unity.”

The staff wellness program also gives staff the opportunity to participate in something they might not have time to do on their own.

About 1,200 staff members participate in the staff wellness program.

“It builds teamwork and gives them a chance to play and work together,” Osborne says. “There’s also increased awareness – fitness nutrition, stress relief. We’re trying to hit all of those areas that we know are a concern for our staff.”

Not only does the program have positive effects on the staff, but Osborne thinks there’s an impact on the students as well.

“They see their teachers talking about health and fitness, and they see how they’re living it,” Osborne says.

Jacoby agrees.

“Taking care of my personal health increases my physical and mental wellbeing,” she says. “That, in turn, makes me a better, more enthusiastic educator. It’s important for our students to see that wellness is a lifelong process.

In the future, Osborne says he’d like to expand the current programming by building more relationships with Dublin’s corporate community.

“We’re always looking for new ideas,” Osborne says. “We want to keep it fresh.”

Starting Early Physical education has evolved in Dublin City Schools Healthy habits shouldn’t be treated as a fad; any health expert will tell you they should be implemented into your lifestyle. Dublin City Schools work hard to help students adopt this mindset early on through its physical education programs.

“We are always trying to be innovative and create new games,” says Traci Grissom, who teaches physical education at Scottish Corners Elementary School. “We like to use different equipment.”

The days of dodgeball and a mandatory mile are long gone. The goal of physical education classes, Grissom says, is to explore and create body awareness through activities such as gymnastics. Thanks to new state assessments, schools are also touching on healthful eating during physical education classes.

“We’re making them aware of healthy choices versus unhealthy choices and encouraging kids to talk to each other about what they had as a snack that day, things like that,” Grissom says.

The push to lead a healthy lifestyle extends beyond curriculum.

There are two jump rope teams at the elementary and middle schools – one is more activity-based, the other is a competition team, Grissom says. All the schools have running clubs, and students enrolled in the adapted physical education program go on field trips where they can participate in physical activity catered to their needs.

The school district has also partnered with the Dublin Community Recreation Center in order to offer community classes in the schools.

These community classes include hip-hop dance, taekwondo and other popular fitness activities. Some of the high schools have yoga classes and, Grissom says, from time to time a yoga teacher will come in for the elementary school students.

The Bash is Dublin Blarney Bash raises proceeds to benefit local and international charities

A

fter a nine-year absence, the Dublin Blarney Bash returned last year, and it aims to be back once again in 2016.

Last year, the Bash hosted more than 3,000 people and featured live bands, Irish dancing, Irish beer, food vendors, and a Wee Folk area for kids. And while this year is sure to be even bigger – the event is moving to the Metro Center to accommodate more guests – it’s more than a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The Blarney Bash also serves as a major fundraiser for the Dublin AM Rotary Club.

“We resurrected it after nine years. We wanted to replace that revenue,” says club President Wolf Lant.

All proceeds from the Blarney Bash go to the 30-plus charitable foundations supported by Rotary. That includes Dublin Robotics, the Salvation Army, Mobile

Canteen, Strides for Sobriety and the Dublin Food Pantry.

Of special note is the Miracle League baseball park, designed to allow kids with handicaps to play on a baseball team. Rotary donated funds to build the park and also provides volunteers to act as “buddies” and run the park in the summer.

The proceeds from Blarney Bash also have a global impact. One international charity the Rotary supports is the LN-4 project, which provides inexpensive artificial hands for people in third-world countries who don’t have access to prostheses.

“We had one guy come from Rwanda.

With these artificial hands, he was able to start living a normal life,” Lant says. “He was an artist before. He said it was lifechanging to be able to draw and pick up a pencil again.”

Another Rotary member approached the club with an idea for funding water treatment plants in India. Since then, the Dublin Rotary has funded five or six plants and plans to add another each year.

“That generates out of one person’s interest in the club. They see a need and say, ‘How can we help?’” Lant says.

While last year’s Blarney Bash came with a few bumps, Lant is encouraged by the effort displayed by volunteers.

“There were so many things that came together at the last minute to help make the event happen,” he says. “It had rained for 24-36 hours before. Everything was a big soupy mess. We had an access route by the stage that had been a dirt road with big ruts. The Ladies of Longford were an afternoon act, and this poor lady got her car stuck in the mud on the way to the event.

She jumped out of the car, threw us the keys, and said she’d be back after she was done. Six to eight people went back to figure out how to get her car out and fix the road. It really illustrated the camaraderie.”

And, he says, the Blarney Bash is uniquely Dublin.

“It helps the entire community celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and celebrate our heritage,” Lant says. “It’s the perfect way for the community to express that.”

Chef Showcase Students compete in the second Coffman cook-off

fter the success of last year’s inaugural event, local students will again be firing up the grill at the 2016 Coffman Cook-off this upcoming April.

Thanks to the partnership between the Leadership Dublin Executive Program and Dublin Coffman High School’s food provider, Chartwells, the cook-off will take place again this spring, with the winning team earning $1,000 and having its recipe put on the school’s menu.

“It was a great project. Some of us felt really passionate about it, and we felt like it was the right thing to do,” says Brian Hunt, director of dining services for Chartwells and Dublin City Schools. “It was a great community event, and it gave the students the opportunity to have a voice and determine what’s on the menu.”

The Leadership Dublin Executive Board began the cook-off last year through the Simply Good Program. “The students absolutely loved her,” says Rower.

The cook-off is also a great way for students looking to go into the food service industry, says Jenny Amorose, chief operating officer at the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, as they get to meet professionals in the industry.

“It creates some exposure for students who want to be in the food industry in their future,” Amorose says.

The Simply Good Program consists of seven group members from Leadership Dublin, and Rower says the plan with the cook-off is to market and replicate it to promote good nutrition at other schools.

“These are people who did not know each other, and we had to work together to make this project work,” Rower says.

“It brings everyone together to focus on health wellness.”

“You Know When You Leave Dublin” Charles ‘Chi’ Weber on the history of Dublin Dublin Life’s storyteller series focuses on the people who make Dublin great – people who have made improving the community a part of their life, people who have been able to call Dublin home for a long time and people who have watched Dublin evolve over the years. The storyteller series tells the history of Dublin through his or her eyes, and sheds light on what living in Dublin was like decades ago.

With the help of these special people, Dublin has undoubtedly become a better place.

I have lived here all my life. My mother and dad graduated from Dublin in 1907, and both their parents lived in Dublin, too.

My grandfather’s farm was where the Red

Roof Inn is today. There were 10 students in my senior class at Dublin High School.

We could all honestly say we finished in the top 10 in the class. We were good kids; everybody in that school – everybody – knew everybody else. If you got into trouble at school, you’d have to worry about Mom; she knew it before you ever got home.

All my kids went to Dublin High School. I was in the PTA until I was 70 years old. I’ve been a cheerleader for Dublin City Schools all my life; there’s just no question about that. I’ve always felt that this was a great place to raise kids, to raise a family. My wife, Betty, and I really enjoyed that. People used to ask us what we

Born in 1923 on Coffman Road, Chi graduated valedictorian of the Dublin High School class of 1941, when it was still located in the 1919 Building. After graduating, Chi enlisted in the Marine Corps after Pearl Harbor and served in World War II and in the Korean War. He rose to the rank of captain before coming back to Dublin and marrying his wife of nearly 52 years, Betty Walker, another Dublin native who passed in 2003. Chi rose through the ranks here in Dublin, too, having retired as president of Franklin Federal in 1988 after 36 years in the savings and loan business. Chi served on the Dublin Board of Education, was chairman of the Dublin Charter Commission and served as president of the Dublin Community Improvement Corporation.

He was a member of the Dublin Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission and is a part of the Dublin Historical Society. Chi has four children – Scott, Rich, Lynn Dee and Karen – and two grandchildren. www.dublinlifemagazine.com

thought our biggest achievement was, and it’s unquestionably that we got all four of our kids through college.

I had the pleasure of serving on the Board of Education for two terms, and we bought the land on Coffman Road for Dublin Coffman High School, which included part of what had once been my dad’s old farm. We made a very wise decision in buying the land for about $1,500 an acre, but people couldn’t understand why you would need 50 acres for a school.

That combination of events took away the discussion about what do we want to change, and it became how do we change.

We don’t always agree, but even today you can drive from Dublin to go to Hilliard or Westerville, and you know when you leave Dublin. It’s different – the streets, the infrastructure.

In the Marines, we were the first troops in Sasebo, Japan and Kyushu. One of the things I always remember was all the kids shouting, “Ohayou.” Of course, that’s their greeting, but I wrote back that the first thing I heard upon landing in Japan was “Ohio!” It never entered my mind not to come home to Dublin. There are so many opportunities for kids. We get great services, we have excellent schools and there’s no question that affects the value. We’ve been very, very fortunate in having people who dedicated a good part of their lives to this town, people who have in their hearts the best interests of this town.

Sure, the feel of Dublin has changed, and you’ll hear, “It’s not what it used to be.” No, it isn’t. We’ve got libraries, we’ve got doctors’ offices galore, we have a hospital, we have a choice of grocery. We didn’t even have a grocery store – we didn’t!

Has Dublin changed? Of course. Has it changed people-wise? Well, there are more of us, but we have so much talent in this town now, people who are really gifted and highly educated. I think it’s great. It used to be that we’d come into Dublin to see movies. They’d have a screen up on the wall and we enjoyed that, but when it was over, you could’ve shot a cannon down the middle of High Street and you wouldn’t hit anybody. There wasn’t anybody. Not now.

I’m not sure I look at change as unapprovingly as some do. We’re more accepting of things, not that those things are new; www.dublinlifemagazine.com

things have always been this way. I think that’s encouraging, I think that’s healthy.

The biggest thing that I noticed in all the time that my grandkids have been in the Dublin City School District is I haven’t heard them once refer to someone of a different race or color in anything other than a complimentary sense. What I un-

derstand is in the Bible, Jesus said, “Come to me; all people.” I think we need to learn to do that. We can’t isolate ourselves and young people; this is the world now.

T

he heroin epidemic is affecting communities all over the state of Ohio, including our community here in Dublin. On Dec. 9, more than 200 people attended a Community Town Hall meeting at the Dublin Community Recreation Center to discuss this issue.

At the Town Hall, a father spoke of losing his 21-year-old son to a heroin overdose, one day after the young man got out of rehab.

A mother told those gathered about her son, struggling with addiction. And a former addict shared his story of hitting rock bottom before finally starting the long road to recovery.

People who attended the town hall had a long list of questions for Dublin Police and the panel of experts at the meeting. How are police tracking where the drugs are coming from? What can parents do if they suspect drug use? What are we going to do differently to end this epidemic?

Not all of these questions have easy answers, but we do know one thing that we, as a community, can do differently. We are going to talk about the problem.

Because addiction fuels many of the property crimes in our City, heroin is affecting us all. A large number of thefts, thefts from vehicles and burglaries are directly tied to heroin abuse and addiction.

While property crimes are a major focus for the Dublin Police Department, the greater toll on communities is the human one – loved ones lost to overdose, or still alive but struggling with addiction to the point they are nearly unrecognizable to their friends and family.

For all these reasons, the heroin epidemic is a community problem, and it requires a community solution. You are part of that solution. We encourage you to report suspected drug abuse.

For those of you directly affected by this epidemic, know there is help here in Dublin. The A.C.T. Coalition; PERC (Parents Encouraging Responsible Choices) and Syntero, Inc. are all valuable resources for families impacted by addiction. You can also always reach out to the Dublin Police Department for help.

The December town hall meeting was just the beginning of this community’s conversation on heroin abuse. We are going to keep talking about this for as long as it takes, and we encourage you to start talking, too – to your children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors. Chances are someone you know is affected by this epidemic.

Emerald Improveme Remodeling and renovation trends throughout Dublin In 2016, Dublin Life will focus on remodeling projects in the City. Check back each issue to learn more about residents’ renovation preferences and individual projects that stand out from the crowd.

A

s Dublin residents seek to improve their homesteads, they focus on a variety of parts of the house: kitchens, bedrooms, master suites, outdoor living spaces, the usual.

One area stands out from the rest, though, says Jeff Tyler, director of building standards for the City: basements.

Tyler and his department have certainly seen their share of home projects; any time a homeowner needs to get a permit for work on his or her house, it comes across Tyler’s desk for review.

For homeowners contemplating overhauls, basement and lower-level remodels are among the easiest to reconcile with zoning regulations, Tyler says.

“Of course, there’s the traditional den-type setup, but we’ll see home theaters, that next bedroom as long as you have the egress window to get out … (or) exercise rooms,” he says.

Game rooms, wine cellars and sports-themed spaces – frequently, as you might guess, with Buckeye themes – are among the other popular uses.

Tyler doesn’t often see additions, but when he does, they are frequently three- or four-season rooms. Kitchens and bedrooms are also common addition choices.

Kitchens often grow to facilitate the insertion of islands. Kitchen islands are a fairly recent trend, so owners of older homes often seek to add them, Tyler says.

Large commercial appliances are also becoming more popular, he says.

“Opening up space to provide more eatin kitchens, as opposed to really distinct and separate rooms” is another trend, says Tyler, noting that open space is a fairly common theme among City projects.

When a bedroom undergoes changes, it’s usually the master bedroom or, by extension, the master suite. Projects range from minor modifications of existing rooms to ambitious efforts that increase the size of the homeowners’ space.

Bathrooms make up a decent-sized percentage of renovations in Dublin. Some projects follow national trends, but Tyler often sees alterations based on lifestyle changes. For example, homeowners are generally moving away from soaker tubs and toward showers, though the opposite is still the case on occasion.

“As people become empty-nesters, we’re seeing more changes from that soaker-tub type mentality to showers, vanities and that type of thing,” Tyler says.

A master suite addition on Marion Street demonstrated the City’s commit-

ment to quality projects and good customer service, says Susan Dyas, owner of Historic Dublin-based residential and commercial design/build company Epic Group Ohio.

An initial application was rejected due to a mistake in the lot setback information provided to the company, so the City worked to get everything straightened out and ensure the project could be completed for the homeowner, who was out of the country on a mission trip.

“They worked with our homeowner to get their lot re-platted so we could do their addition,” says Dyas.

One area where Tyler isn’t seeing the open-space trend pick up: living rooms, which aren’t often being enlarged and/ or turned into great rooms unless as part of a larger kitchen remodel. Improved kitchens, bathrooms and basements have the most substantial effect on resale value, so that’s where homeowners most often invest, he says.

Because additions are uncommon in the City, efforts to enlarge master suites sometimes take creative approaches to avoid increasing square footage, such as altering the ceiling or rafters.

“I have seen, in the past, where (homeowners) take attic space … to increase space for master bedrooms,” Tyler says.

For improvements outside the home, areas that can become outdoor living spaces are in vogue.

“You see a lot more with outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, pergolas, trellises, those types

of things,” says Tyler. “I’m starting to see a lot of people go from decks to patios because of the maintenance issues.”

When the City does see decks, they are most often made with synthetic wood products to avoid those maintenance struggles, Tyler says.

projects is homeowners uncovering unexpected dimensions to their houses. Tyler gives as an example a house on South High Street whose homeowner took out the existing walls and encountered the original timbers.

“Sometimes, you don’t know what’s behind the walls or the ceiling until you open it up,” Tyler says.

On the whole, historic homes don’t see much alteration, though Tyler has seen major interior remodels from time to time.

It’s less common to see new construction on infill sites, he says, or structures previously used for businesses being gutted and restored for residential use.

“The last three (infill projects) that we saw were large homes on small sites trying to maximize the square footage on those sites,” he says.

Being part of the department that oversees home improvement projects means getting many a look at Dublin residents’ creativity, from exterior living spaces to open floor plans, and that’s experience Tyler and the other members of the department appreciate.

“I get to see a lot of this,” he says. “We do get our fair share of really nice projects.”

y love of travel began when I studied in Dublin, Ireland, during my junior year of college.

On weekends, my friends and I hopped trains or ferry boats to other countries, stayed in youth hostels and lived on $12 a day. After college, I bought a Eurorail pass and flew to Germany to start a two-week escapade and wound up staying almost three months, traveling down through Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal and across the Mediterranean Sea to Morocco.

I still love the adventures of travel, whether it’s a ritzy corporate trip with my husband, a getaway with my girlfriends or a family trip with our children. The most fulfilling part has been instilling the travel bug in our kids and watching them take off in their own directions. Our son, Christopher, recently spent two weeks in Peru and Machu Picchu for his economics degree from Dartmouth College. Meanwhile, our daughter Courtney went to Ireland on her own last summer to pursue Irish dance, and will perform on an Irish Dance tour for three weeks in Japan this coming summer. Our youngest, Catie, will head to Scotland with us soon, but also talks about studying medicine one day and working in Africa.

It’s a big world outside of I-270 with fascinating food, cultures, history, activities and architecture. Many fellow Dubliners are taking the time to pursue their own foreign experiences and are happy to share what they have learned. Maybe one of them will inspire you!

Penny Kyle

Penny Kyle was born and raised in New Zealand. After college she did her “overseas experience,” as the Kiwis call it, in Switzerland as an au pair and then traveled for the next three years in Europe and North America. For nine years, Penny lived in Washington, D.C. with her husband, Blake, before moving to New Zealand for the next nine years and then to Dublin after that.

Every year, when the kids go back to school, Penny and her mom, who still lives in New Zealand, meet in Switzerland at Uncle Simon’s house and spend a few weeks traveling. Flights are very cheap within Europe and Penny suggests checking with EasyJet. Recently, Penny rented a gite, which was a charming 18th-century restored farmhouse in southwestern France. She advises looking up “agritourism” for a worldwide directory of farms, ranches and wineries for overnight stays and to better experience the local foods and customs.

Another favorite spot of Penny’s is Croatia, specifically the walled 7th-century city of Dubrovnik.

“You cross over a moat and go back in time,” says Penny. “Get there early so

you can walk on the wall before the cruise ships show up.”

She also advises watching videos by travel expert Rick Steves and trying not to plan too much into one trip.

“It’s good to have a plan, but also fun just to see where the day takes you,” explains Penny.

Rebecca Hinze

Rebecca Hinze’s goal was to visit 40 countries before turning 40. She and her husband, Todd, visited Peru in November and accomplished that goal.

extracurriculars,” Rebecca says. “Thankfully, my parents were able to help out by watching Parker.”

Rebecca and Todd found it difficult to pick their favorite locations, but their recent trip to Peru and Machu Picchu made the list. They hiked the Inca Trail to 8,000 feet, arriving at Sun Gate at sunset for an incredible view of the mountain village. Then they hiked the treacherous Huayna Picchu.

“The fear was worth the view,” Rebecca says.

Da Nang, Vietnam also ranks high with its beautiful, ancient Buddhist temples.

Rebecca and Todd took a boat tour along the Mekong Delta and walked silently among 10-year-old boys in red and blue robes and mohawks, training to becoming Buddhist monks.

Marrakech, Morocco was fascinating to explore with its twisting medina and maze-like streets, where you can buy everything from gorgeous rugs to camel meat. Rebecca and Todd also spent five days exploring the Atlas Mountains and took a camel ride deep into the desert, where they camped overnight.

“Seeing the way other people live is inspiring and interesting but, on the long flights home, we always feel grateful to return to Dublin, where we have everything we love,” says Rebecca.

The Magans

Dublin residents Marivi and Dave Magan set a goal of seeing all seven continents before their children, Gabe and Sophie, graduated high school. They completed their quest in the fall with a trip to Antarctica, crossing the rough water of the Drake Passage twice.

“The places we have been as a family are no longer just dots on a map, and the individuals we see on the news are people we have sincere compassion for,” explains Marivi. “Whether it’s the people of Nepal during the earthquake, four weeks after we visited there, or Paris after the shooting.”

A favorite memory for the Magans was celebrating Dave’s birthday in Nepal.

Chance timing allowed for a flight over Mt. Everest and the rest of the Himalayas in the morning and a ride with elephants in the Chitwan jungle that same night.

spent time in Quito, Ecuador and in the Amazon rainforest in South America, and cruised in and around Australia and New Zealand. In Africa, they enjoyed safaris, hiking and camping at Mt. Kilimanjaro and ended with time on Zanzibar.

Marivi suggests hiring local guides to learn more about the cultures and trying to travel with only carry-ons. Checked baggage doesn’t always arrive, so it’s best to limit your clothing to necessities and hand-wash items you need to wear again.

Also, photograph and journal as much as possible, but remember to be present in the moment and participate in the experience. Soon enough, you will be on the plane home, ready to appreciate how truly blessed we are in Dublin, but maybe with an improved sensitivity to other cultures and world views.

Station Eleven follows the story of a group of actors and musicians. The timeline spans decades, and switches between the lives of the artists before the spread of a mysterious disease and the aftermath of the infection. Critics described the novel as a great example of human perseverance, with The New York Times writing, “If Station Eleven reveals little insight into the effects of extreme terror and misery on humanity, it offers comfort … that in spite of everything people will remain good at heart, and that when they start building a new world they will want what was best about the old.”
